DUALLY ™

Hair Shedding Comb Now, truly a hair shedding comb designed for all show cattle hair coats ... thick or thin! Removing dead hair has never been so simple and effective, EVER ... Saves Days! The extra-large 5” wide head covers 25% more area with each stroke than any previous shedding comb. This double-sided hair shedding comb features rounded stainless steel teeth with extra-wide spacing on one side that gently penetrate deep into the thickest, “wooly” hair coats removing old dead hair, yet leaving the healthy hair unharmed. Flip the comb over to the other side with narrow spaced teeth to remove dead hair from medium coats. Always remember ... the faster the dead hair is shed out, the faster new healthy hair will grow.

Patent pending.

The #1 daily hair care brush just got a big brother! the SMART SENSATION XL ™ In June, the SMART SENSATION became the craze of the show cattle world. To complement the Original, we are pleased to introduce the XL. The XL is a wider version with 10 rows containing 199 uniquely placed ball-tipped teeth. These extra rows containing a total of 54% more teeth creates more gentle, stimulating contact to the skin and hair with each stroke to stimulate the natural oils from the skin to coat the hair and promote healthy hair growth. The XL creates increased hair separation of the hide to amplify hair volume. Sensations are available in two sizes: Original 7 row and now the NEW 10 row XL.

Patent pending.

SULLIVAN’S – The Innovative Leader!

Get more hair perfection with Sullivan’s new Teflon Combs. Teflon is a solid polymer that is considered to be one of the world’s most slippery and water resistant substances. It has one of the lowest measured coefficients of friction of any compound. For our application, it creates a baked-on surface to the comb teeth for reduced friction and a non-stick lubricant that allows the comb to glide through the hair easier, especially with a sticky substance like adhesives. Although not full-proof, especially since adhesive is still a very sticky substance, you will however be glad to see a 40 to 50% improvement of less matting, less hair drag, less static and less stick to the comb when fitting a leg. It is definitely easier to clean adhesives from the comb and saves time while fitting. Another industry first from Sullivan’s ... the Innovative Leader! Available as Sullivan Combs, Fluffer Combs, and Double-Stuff Comb.

Sullivan’s

Staggered Bristle Roto Brush™ The New Staggered Bristle Roto Brush has rows with staggered lengths of bristles, one row with long, the next row being 1/4” shorter. The short-cut rows allow the long bristles to work deeper into the hair. This creates more lift and volume to the hair, prevents the matted look and invigorates gentle stimulation to the hair base for new hair growth and faster hair training. The short rows are cut to a length 1/4” shorter. Lock nut keeps the brush securely tight and free from spinning loose. Flat side of bolt allows it to lock tight in the drill and keep from spinning loose. A common problem with other roto brushes. Lime green color allows for easy visual while working with all hair colors. The soft, gentle grade of synthetic bristles prevents the brush from being too harsh as compared to stiffer roto brushes that can scratch and irritate the hide.

From The Editor

The Final Issue of 2012 We take a look back at all of the events

I

of 2012 and plan for an exciting 2013! t has been a very busy year for us at The Showtimes. We have personally traveled to thirteen states attending numerous national, regional and state livestock shows, sales, fundraisers, and events. Our magazine has reached a record number of 46 states; as well as Canada, where our subscriptions have over tripled, and our new found friends down under. It has been a privilege to be able to work with and meet individuals from across our great country and within our industry worldwide. As you read this issue, take note to where you are, what you are doing, and who you are with. Growing up, many of the people I went to school with, including my teachers, never ventured out farther than the radius of our town limits. My involvement in the livestock industry has provided me with the opportunity to travel thousands of miles, spend quality time with my family, make friends from coast to coast, learn how to lose, be humbled by success, and ultimately make the world a whole lot smaller. While hard work is the backbone of what we do, each

and every one of us have been extremely blessed to have been literally raised in a barn. I love the way this issue reflects on this past year. Not only is it filled with show results from top shows and advertisements, it brings together many of the champions, events, and features from 2012. My family always enjoys providing our readers with backstories on individuals from within our industry and recognizing others that have made a positive impact through their involvement and time. Don’t put this issue down until you read articles about the Kempker brothers from Missouri, our newest Hall of Fame inductee, and from a very special “Show Mom.” I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making 2012 a truly great year. We look forward to sharing with you for many more years to come! Sincerely, Laurie Reid Owner

Leading a Legacy Shorthorn Sale Raises over $56,000

JR. BREEDING HEIFERS

More than $56,000 was raised for the National Junior Shorthorn Show during the inaugural Leading a Legacy Fundraiser held at Sullivan Farms near Dunlap, Iowa on October 6. The evening festivities began with a prime rib dinner, followed by the item auction that started with a bidoff of the first Shorthorn Foundation Female, TSF Mona Lisa, donated by Terry Stade Farms, Inc. of Shakopee, Minn. A group of avid youth supporters purchased the female for $26,550, which they donated back for the auction and was purchased again by Steve Oler of Economy, Ind., for $7,000.

ANGUS Paul Hill, OH

Lots following the Foundation Female continued to receive active bids. Other popular items from the sale included the Sullivan Supply/ Stock Show University package offered by Sullivan Supply and purchased by Fred Ripberger, Sidell, Ill., for $2,100. The Great Shorthorn Revival Consignors, Beaverton, Mich., purchased a Live Auctions stream offered by Brad Fahrmeier also for $2,100. Sale lots offering

packages to sporting events and even a free Full Page Color Ad and Design by The Showtimes created a lot of interest for those in attendance as well. Immediately following the auction, a "Casino Night" began that consisted of four blackjack tables along with tables for craps, roulette and Texas Hold'em. Juniors and adults could participate by purchasing a bag of chips from an AJSA Board Member to get started. After a couple hours of play, those who had earned chips could put those toward purchasing prizes at the conclusion of the evening. Fundraising Chairman for the AJSA Board of Directors, Joseph O'Sullivan, is very appreciative of all the support the event received in its first year. For more information on AJSA activities, visit www.juniorshorthorn. com or contact Gwen Crawford, at 402-393-7200.

Keys to Reaching the Winner’s Circle Brought to You by Weaver Leather Livestock The Key to

The Right Look: Products with Style and Substance

Signature Series Products “There’s an advantage in the ring to having a clean, professional appearance. That’s why I’m so adamant about using only the highest quality products that not only look great and make cattle look great, but also function properly and stand up to the rigors of life in the show industry.” Kirk Stierwalt, Professional Cattle Expert

Carbon Fiber Show Stick Known for its strength, lightweight properties and sleek appearance, carbon fiber makes this the luxury car of show sticks. Test results show that this stick is, on average, 41% stronger and 25% lighter than typical aluminum sticks on the market, so leave your scratched, dinged and dented one at the gate and make this your go-to choice for the ring.

Black Magic Show Halter Distractions don’t win banners. With quality black bridle leather, matching hardware and low profile styling, this trend-setting halter practically disappears on your black steer or heifer so the judge gets a true, unhindered look at its features.

The classy, refined look of carbon fiber will give any professional showman an edge in the show ring

Kirk Stierwalt Neck Sweat System A clean, attractive neckline makes a difference in the ring and achieving it is made easy with this neck sweat unlike any other on the market. The black Flex Foam liner retains heat for the perfect sweat while the easy-to-clean channels trap dirt and grime to eliminate buildup on your cattle’s skin.

Big Tex Goes Up In Flames On Friday, October 19, 2012 the State Fair of Texas lost their 52 foot icon. The giant metal cowboy would greet fairgoers with the words "Howdy, folks" for 60 years! Anyone who has ever been to the State Fair of Texas knows Big Tex. There were no injuries in the fire. According to kirotv.com, "Big Tex was actually built in 1949 as a giant Santa Claus for a Christmas Celebration in Kerens, 60 miles south of Dallas. Intrigued by the idea of a towering cowboy, the State Fair paid $750 for the structure, which debuted as Big Tex in 1952." The figure’s hands and cage-like skeleton, which consists of 4,200 feet of steel rods weighing three tons, remain from the fire. At this point, investigators believe the fire was caused from an electrical short that started in his right boot. They plan on replacing him for the 2013 fair.

Scott Kinzer, Director of New Product Development for Sullivan Supply

NEW SULLIVAN'S TEFLON COATED COMBS

The new show day comb for leg grooming!

BY SCOTT KINZER & JOHN SULLIVAN

The original theory of Teflon Combs dates back to 2001 when Scott Kinzer, Director of New Product Development for Sullivan Supply and John Sullivan, New Product Development and Founder of Sullivan Supply became frustrated with sticky, clogged up combs. It was thought "why can't we have something like a non-stick cooking pan surface? Lord knows that Teflon pans have saved many futile attempts at cooking". Unfortunately, at the time, the technology of Teflon was not suited for this application and the idea failed after many attempts. Fast forward to 2012 and the innovations of Teflon have changed dramatically. Through the guidance of Wayne Ringer of Ringer Bros. of Indiana we were able to find the correct coating to use on combs. Wayne, an industry specialist with extensive technical backing in Teflon technologies along with being a show cattle enthusiast, understood our exact needs. Not all types of Teflon will work, in fact there are many different strains of Teflon. Through extensive trial and error we have found the one that works the best for adhesive application on show cattle. The original substance, Teflon was actually invented in 1938 by accident in a botched laboratory experiment. Teflon is a solid polymer that is considered to be one of the world's most slippery and water resistant substances. It has one of the lowest measured coefficients of friction of any compound. Before it was ever used on non-stick cooking pans, it was used as a solid lubricant on industrial machinery. For our application, it creates a baked-on surface to the comb teeth for reduced friction and a non-stick lubricant that allows the comb to glide through the hair easier, especially with a sticky substance like adhesives. Although not full-proof, especially since adhesive is still a very sticky substance, you will however be glad to see a 40 to 50% improvement of less matting, less hair drag, less static, and less stick to the comb. It is definitely easier to clean adhesives from this comb and saves time while fitting. ...and you thought Teflon was only for Cooking Pans! Available as Sullivan Combs, Fluffer Combs, and the Doublestuff Comb. Another industry first from Sullivan's... the Innovative Leader!

The North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) is the world's largest all-breed, purebred livestock exposition. Ten different species of livestock compete in the exposition, and the purebred beef and sheep events are the largest in the world. Throughout the show, visitors will also enjoy the Giant Country Store with its nearly 200 commercial vendors. The NAILE is produced by the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the Kentucky Exposition Center, Louisville, KY, under the direction of the Kentucky State Fair Board. During the Expo’s two-week run, the facility’s entire 1,200,000 square feet of climate-controlled exhibit space is used. More than 200,000 visitors and exhibitors attend the event annually.

CITY STATS

Purebred livestock from across the United States compete at the NAILE for top breed association honors and national recognition. Last year there were more than 24,500 entries, a new show record. This year’s crop of contestants will compete for nearly $750,000 in premiums and awards.

A father who took on the responsibility of a “Show Mom” when life threw him a curve. BY MICHAEL LOBATO, COLORADO

42 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

Show Mom

I

’m sitting here tonight thinking about Michael Lobato as Show Mom. I am honored I was even asked to submit this article about my kids and me. But I also know that I am a Show Mom, a dad, a friend and mentor to a couple of great kids. This all started back in the early nineties when I was working in La Grange, WY and I came across a true beauty by the name of Renee Oaks. We fell in love and I soon married my dream girl. But only 6 short months after we married we were told that Renee had breast cancer. Twenty-six years old and such devastating news. What do we all do in this industry? We pull up our boots, tighten our belts, and move forward. After 3 years of treatment and a clean bill of health we were blessed with Nicholas Christopher Lobato. That was the day I started to tell Renee that he and I were going to show cattle. Three short years later we got the news that another Lobato would soon be joining the crew at the WindowSash Ranch. During this pregnancy Renee started to have some difficulties. We learned early in spring the cancer had returned and both Renee and our child were in danger. We knew what was right and held onto that child, and on August 24, 1998 Jordan Lynn Lobato entered the world. Renee was only with us for two more years. On December 20, 2000 we lost my best friend and Nicholas and Jordan’s mom.

43

So here I was, a young cowman with two young kids ready to face the world, and I wanted them to show cattle. Nick got started when he was 7 with Rose, a light red Balancer heifer that we raised on the ranch. First show: Champion Heifer! Off to a good start right? Nick was; I still had the whole mom/dad thing going on. Who was I? We dragged Jordan along and we showed Rose at a few more shows and had more success. After a couple of years on the road with Nick I found a great Alias/ Sugar Ray daughter from my best friend Tim Burke. Jordan was set to have great success with “Brown Sugar” who won many shows. About the same time Nicholas raised a Mossy Oak daughter. She won 9 championships that year; we showed at some Junior National shows and many jackpot shows. While I kept being mom, dad and best friend, I never once thought it was about the win or the banner. I always thought, “What would Renee want for her kids?” It was through our experiences raising, caring for and showing cattle I found a love for my kids that few know. As we have gone on with our life on the road I have instilled in my kids the importance of education. I never once let them slack in their

studies. Nick struggled as a youngster. Losing his Mom was tough on a young child, but that Mossy Oak heifer he named Rachael taught him things no one could teach a kid in a classroom. She was one tough girl to love, but he worked hard all spring and summer. Those 9 wins came with a lot of bruises, sore muscles, and discouragement. Even Jordan received the wrath of Rachael. When that summer was done Nicholas went on to be highly successful in school. That one heifer taught Nicholas things that cannot be taught in any classroom in this country. Rachael taught Nick and Jordan how dedication, hard work, and persistence reward us not only with championships but with the ability to succeed in everything they may try in future. What makes me a Show Mom? I was the person who did the hair, the clothes, the meals. I made sure Nick and Jordan’s back tags were on right, they had their boots on and, most important, they smiled and had fun. So as the Show Mom, I raised the bar. Better calves, more work, and more time as a family. We also fell into some good fate. I happened to raise a cherry red young calf we saved

44 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

for the Denver Stock Show. Nick showed Stephen early and then we headed to Denver; my two kids in an old beat up truck and a steer we thought was great. Well guess what? We made the champion drive with Stephen and my son was introduced by the late Larry Handy as a contender at the NWSS Market steer show. I have always taught my kids to strive for victory but also taught them the times you get beat are the real lessons to remember. The failures along the way are the only things that allow them to truly appreciate a huge win. Those hours of windshield time after a good old fashioned butt kicking reminded us we were still small fish in a big pond. After each one of those shows I noticed Nick and Jordan alwasy seemed to work a bit harder. They took to heart what I tried to teach them about the pride of winning and the humility of losing. I know my kids are prepared to enter an adult life that is hard, challenging but full of rewards for those who work hard; this is the best gift a Show Mom can give. All this time I went on as Show Mom, dad, and best friend, never once ignoring my kids’ education, ability to show or the fact that life is one fun ride. We have laughed, cried, fought, bickered and en-

joyed every second of this ride so far. I have looked into my kids’ eyes and told them how proud I was. I have looked in their eyes and told them that they needed to raise their bar. But most importantly I have looked into their eyes and told them not only I was proud of them but that their mom would have been too. Fast-forward to 2011. I had two kids willing to work hard and we had the best steer we had ever owned, and a great Maine heifer. Because of them, this was the year I shone as a Show Mom. We won the county fair breeding show and we made the sale at state fair. Jordan had champion Maine heifer in Pueblo, and Nick’s focused commitment brought us the reserve champion carcass in Pueblo. I was proud of what my kids had done. The 2012 NWSS also proved rewarding for my kids. Jordan’s steer MJ was selected the division 2 champion steer in the open prospect show. Then the shovel hit me in the face. Jordan: “I want to show lambs, Dad!” What? Where did I go wrong? So what does the Show Mom do? This is how I shone: we went out and found the best of the best. Four months with animals that I didn’t even understand we go to

our first jackpot. Oh let me tell you, the ribbing was tough. Lobatos with lambs? Well yeah, we had a couple. But we started the day with a champion prospect calf: a market heifer of Nick’s that beat a few steers. Then on to the lamb show. Jordan’s first lamb show and just like Nick when he was 7 . . . champion! And, Jordan went on to win the San Luis Valley Fair with her market lamb last fall. Dad, or as you all know me now ”Show Mom,” was right there. Not doing the hair like I did when Jordan was young, but still making sure that the buckle was right, the boots were on, and the back tag corresponded with the calf/lamb that was going into the ring. I was there. I want this story to be about what junior livestock shows do for kids. About how a single parent can take two young lives and make them better. My story is not about wins or losses; it’s about life. I have been afforded a blessing from God. I was given a gift that very few people know. Renee Lynne Oaks gave her life to her kids and I am honored to have carried it for-

ward. The fact that so many of you I call friends have been a huge part of this story makes me smile. My mother Eva Lobato, has honestly made this possible. She has given me strength to go forward and make this dream come true. Show Mom? Not sure; the verdict might still be out on that. A guy who has done and will continue to do everything for my kids? Yeah! I love that I get to stand by the ring, shout, throw my comb down, help them find the lesson when they lose, and jump with joy when they win. I am truly blessed to have raised my kids in this arena with the best people in the world: people I call friends and who pat my kids on the back even when they come in last. I count my blessings at every show knowing you are there, my friends. When I look back on this part of my life I will know two things. First, I was a good Show Mom, dad, best friend; those kids did get their hair combed, boots on, buckles intact and a smile put on their faces. The second thing is I will always know that that I kept their mom alive in their hearts. She should have been the Show Mom this month, but I am honored to have carried this on in her name. May God bless you Renee Lynn Lobato.▪

Market Goats | Market Lambs

My family has a long tradition of participating at the AK-SAR-BEN Livestock Show in Omaha, Nebraska. Both my parents showed cattle at AkSar-Ben during the early 70’s and each one of my four siblings have exhibited sheep numerous times since 2001. I have shown sheep at Ak-Sar-Ben since 2007, and it was always a dream of mine to in the “Winners Circle.” God blessed my efforts and dreams by having my sheep named Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2012 Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Show. This was a double sweet win, as I also exhibited the Grand Champion Lamb Challenge, so I was fortunate enough to have two lambs in the Purple Ribbon Livestock Auction. It was an unbelievable Saturday for me at Ak-Sar-Ben. Behind every livestock show is a group of people who have helped me

along the way. My older sister and my grandparents were there to cheer me on. My brothers, John and Jared fed my animals when I was gone. A big thanks to my brother Jake, who has an eye for champions, and helped me pick out the lambs when they were “green.” A very special thanks to Robby and Jamie Geodken at Geodken Livestock. Jamie has coached me through the years and I can always count on getting my many questions answered by him. The biggest thank you goes out to my parents for giving me various opportunities to exhibit purple ribbon lambs and cattle! I feel humbly blessed by God for giving me a circle of family and friends that support me. God placed me at this time and position with opportunities to go to shows, participate in 4-H, meet great people and live and work on a farm.

“Stock Show U is a great organization to help kids learn how to take care of their animal before and during the show. I have been to many fitting clinics and Stock Show U is easily the best I've attended. They did a great job of teaching you how to fit your animal for show day. I also want to thank Stock Show U for sponsoring our Shorthorn Junior National fitting contest.

- Riley Ruble

Riley attended the 2012 Minnesota Grad Program; the skills he acquired helped his team win the Intermediate Team Fitting Contest at the 2012 Shorthorn Junior Nationals.

“Stock Show University taught me different clipping and fitting styles that are being used today that I did not know about. I considered myself to be an alright clipper and fitter before I went to a clinic, but coming out of the clinic I learned more than I ever thought I would, and I would say that the clinic helped me a lot.” - Trevor Moore Trevor acheived his goal of winning the Grand Champion Steer at the Iowa State fair, but more importantly he clipped his steer himself. Trevor gained confidence from the new skills he learned from the 2011 Winter Clipping Clinic in Muscatine Iowa .

“Stock Show U was so much fun. The things I learned from the grad program will help me be successful in the show ring for the duration of my show career. I had never used things like paints and leg builders so it was really fun to learn about them and get to use them. I also really enjoyed learning to clip. The professors showed me a lot of good tips and gave me a strong base to start learning to clip. It’s a work in progress but I’m slowly trying to learn to clip my own calves. Thank you so much Sullivan Supply for running such a great program!” - Logan Vail Logan was awarded best senior fitter at the 2012 Ohio Grad Program in Lima, OH.

SHOW.RITE TIP

Winter is Coming

BY DAVE GUYER, IL

108 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

This time of year when winter is coming on, one can ease up or give yourself a break because of the cooler weather. This is true to an extent… but we have to treat mom’s like mom’s, kid’s sometimes like kid’s and show cattle like show cattle. Chad Day, when he was full time with me, said it hundreds of times that a show calf needed to be treated like a show calf and you know he’s right. When the weather is nice like it will be coming up it is real easy to just let your calf go. I feel that if that happens you are missing the real learning stages in that calfs life. Think of it this way, could you have skipped 1st through 4th grade and just started in 5th? No, and neither can your calf. Get on ‘em early and teach ‘em what the halter is and how to respect that halter just like we talked about in last month’s issue. Then teach ‘em to be show cattle every day. When the weather is good at least get them in and rinse and blow out. Tie them up in a stall and teach ‘em to stand straight and stand still. I know some of you are saying “Well it’s too cold to rinse” and if it is at least get ‘em in, blow ‘em out, and work some Kleen Sheen into their hair. Keep them clean and if your one that has a muddy lot like most of us at some point do, do not let them get mud balls. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. If they are getting mud balls then it is just plain neglect. Show cattle should not be getting mud balls. It pulls hair out, it’s hard on their skin, and then when you go to wash those mud patches out it teaches them that when they get a bath it’s going to hurt because you are going to be pulling hair and they don’t forget. It has to be pretty dang cool for me not to rinse my calf and keep them clean. The whole lesson to be learned from all this rambling on is this… Don’t be lazy and use the weather as your excuse to not work your calf. If the weather is bad as least bring ‘em in and keep ‘em clean. Start teaching them as soon as you put them in the barn. And if you’re going to have show cattle then treat them like show cattle. If you use and keep that motto, I promise your calf will act like a show calf. Good luck in this calf hunting season and for those of you that have filled your tag… Get to work, the shows are just around the corner!

AUCTIONEERS

MINNESOTA

Frank Sullivan

I guess you would have to call us professional auctioneers, businessmen, salesman, actors, mathematicians, comedians, singers and possibly a few other descriptive terms from time to time all rolled into one person. And it certainly is a conversation piece when someone inquires to your profession. My decision to be an auctioneer happened when I was only 7 years old. My older brother Ed acquired the “Auctioneer Song” sung by Leroy Van Dyke, from Pat Mahony, of the Ericson Spalding Livestock Market in NE. They were college buddies. Well I took that old 45 LP record (I’m sure most livestock enthusiasts under the age of 20 are wondering what a 45LP is) and put it on the record player, reduced the speed to 33 1/3 and figured out the lyrics. Remember there weren’t computers, much less the internet, Google, You Tube or Lyrics.com in 1967. Then to the dismay of my 15 siblings I started practicing day and night. I sang that song while doing chores, while driving the tractor, while in the shower, I mean everywhere. My friend Craig Weise and I would skip school on Tuesday and go to the sale barn in Dunlap, IA and just hang out. I wanted to be on that auction block and was determined to do so. I was the youngest person at Reisch Worldwide College of Auctioneering in the spring of 1979. I was only 18, but had been practicing my chant for years. I worked at the Dunlap Livestock Auction during high school and remember the day Jim Schaben told

120 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

me, “anyone can sound pretty on a microphone, but it takes a whole lot more than sounding pretty to be an auctioneer.” I have gratitude to both him and Erv Pauley who were my first teachers and mentors. They taught me things I still use to this day. Off to college in Maryville, MO and the Grant City, Mo sale barn weekly. I remember working the livestock sales for $15, $20, $25 a day. And they were 12 to 14 hour days sometimes. I would go to the horse sale in Bethany. MO and work for free just to practice. I also worked club calf sales and purebred cattle sales. From college to MN and I was introduced to the auto auction industry. I was in heaven. It was commerce conducted at 90 miles an hour. There are dealer lanes that would run about 60 to 75 cars an hour, but the factory and lease lanes were upwards of 200 cars an hour. My record to date for cars is 356 cars in 52 minutes. With the onset of simulcasting the auctions, the speed has drastically been reduced. You could call me old school as in I still wear a tie most of the time when I conduct an auction. I remember one of my early mentors saying if you want to be a professional auctioneer you should certainly look like a professional. I started traveling the country, doing in excess of 200 auctions a year and flying in excess of 125,000 miles a year. In addition to auto auctions, I was selling real estate around the U.S. as well. A highlight was auctioning Southfork Ranch from the TV series Dallas. Then Joseph was born and 3 years later

Frank being interviewed by Chris Terembes of Livestock World TV during the Leading A Legacy Shorthorn Fundraiser in Dunlap, IA. Photo courtesy of Livestock World TV.

Paddy showed up. It is hard on a family to travel extensively. But when 4 more children became part of our family in 2000 and with Mary Grace joining us in Jan 2001, the traveling stopped and I concentrated more locally. Family is a priority for me and my wife Mary and I didn’t want my children to grow up without me being present. The years go by in a flash when you are around, I can’t imagine how fast if I wasn’t. The impetus for showing cattle was also that it is something we can do as a family. There isn’t a need to preach the positive impact this industry has on family life and the natural built in tendency for children and young adults to learn a plethora of life’s lessons caring for and showing animals. I know I’m singing to the choir on this issue. As Joseph, then Paddy, and now will grow up, they started assisting me with auctions. Now to be able to conduct various auctions with the “crew”, Roger included, is truly a blessing. An example is the Leading a Legacy auction we just conducted to raise funds for the Shorthorn Jr Nationals. Joseph as the “Auction Chair” for the AJSA was very instrumental in the success of the event. I conduct approximately 30 benefit auctions, added to the livestock and auto auctions that totals in excess of over 175 auctions a year. Now it has come full circle for me, and back to cattle, as we are building our purebred and show

cattle auction business. There isn’t a greater group of people to be associated with and to conduct business with. One of the great pleasures is seeing Jr members acquire their show prospects at auction. Watching them view and assess the livestock with their parents and then see the excitement on the faces as the winning bid is announced in their name. I see a place for both online and live auctions as our part (auctions) of the show and purebred industry evolves with technology. The fact that more and more of the live auctions are simulcast offers wonderful opportunity to everyone as well. I thank God for the opportunity to be involved in such a great profession. It has afforded me the opportunity to meet and conduct commerce with people from all over the world. It has been and continues to be a blessing to me and my family.

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” This quote from the great Ralph Waldo Emerson applies to our next featured auctioneer. Steve Bonham is recognized as an industry leader when it comes to marketing livestock—whether in the pasture or on the auction block. His passion for the club calf industry, specifically, is infectious and has inspired thousands of young people across the country for over 25 years. If you buy show steers or heifers, chances are you have been to Newcastle, Oklahoma, where Steve has resided since 1986. Having one of the quickest eyes for livestock of anyone you will meet, Steve has selected and marketed hundreds of show ring champions and sale ring elites. His customers have won steer shows in virtually all 48 contiguous states. Steve felt at an early age that he had a gift for auctioneering and attended Gregg’s School of Auctioneering

following his freshman year in high school, where he received the “Outstanding Auctioneer” Award among other attendees two to three times his age. Today, his voice can be heard at many of the leading cattle auctions across the United States. Steve and his wife, Stacey, have two sons, Logan, 16, and Baylor, 9. Steve’s foresight and his uncanny knack for making others want to be a part of what he is doing leave a lasting impression. He feels very blessed to be able to earn a living doing what he loves while helping others achieve their dreams and hopefully having a positive influence on young people involved in the livestock industry.

Roger M. Hunker grew up in northern Ohio on his family’s 1,000-acre diversified livestock and crop operation near Tiffin, Ohio, that included dairy cattle, sheep, hogs and beef cattle. Roger has been married to his wife, Laurie, for 22 years and they have three children. Megan currently attends The Ohio State University majoring in Animal Sciences and Agricultural Communications. Sarah is a sophomore at Bellevue High School and Austin is in the 4th grade. Roger and his family reside just outside of Bellevue, Ohio, where they enjoy raising, feeding and showing lambs, cattle and pigs at all levels! Roger graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Animal Science/Ag-Education. While attending OSU he was involved in a variety of ag clubs and activities. Following OSU, he and college friend Kevin Wendt, founded Prime TIME Agri-Marketing Network. Roger taught high school agriculture for three years along with working in the animal agriculture industry for 15 years. Roger attended Reppert’s School of Auctioneering in 1988. Since beginning in the auction business, Roger has auctioned and managed hundreds of livestock sales. Roger’s focus has always been on livestock sales although; he does do some real estate and household sales throughout the year. In 2005 with the encouragement of Kevin Wendt, Roger began his first online sheep sale. It was a slow but steady growth process as the livestock industry gained acceptance of the “NEW”

way to buy and sell their livestock. In the winter of 2008, Janet Childs made the decision to sell www.breedersworld.com due to her time commitment with other enterprises. Seeing Breeders’ World as a valuable site, Roger made a call to price the site. In March of 2008, Breeders’ World’s headquarters moved to Bellevue, Ohio. By the end of 2008, the online auctions Roger was already conducting were moved under the name Breeders’ World Online Sales. In the spring of 2009, Breeders’ World Online Sales conducted a cattle equipment dispersal for a young fellow in South Dakota. He liked the process of the online sale so much he asked for a job! In June of 2009 Travis Stenberg was brought to the team to be a representative for the cattle division. The growth of the online sales has been mind boggling to say the least. In 2009 Breeders’ World conducted 38 online sales. Roger is currently projecting to have over 400 sales in 2012. Roger attributes much of the growth of the current business to the tremendous team that has been assembled along with a great group of sellers and buyers. Roger and the entire team at Breeders World look forward to serving the livestock industry for many years to come.

NEW MEMBER

Bo Sanders

D DUNCAN, OKLAHOMA

etermination… Maybe that should have been this salesman’s middle name, but everyone knows him by Bo… Bo Sanders the scale man. But determination is a big part of his profession, and if you know him at all you will say that he is full of determination, along with several other admirable and sought after qualities by the people who work with him and have loved him for years. He belongs where he is because determination pushes him to be the man, husband, father, grandfather, and employee that he is every day. He is a strong Christian, with an unusual story that makes his abilities extremely unique, and his beliefs and constitution are a testimony to the people who don’t really see the whole picture or know the real story of his life. James D. Sanders “Bo” was born in Oxnard, California, and came to Oklahoma when his parents moved to Central High, between Lawton and Duncan when he was 7 years old. He grew up close to the plant where he would put his sweat, and hard work into all of his adult life, and even as a child he was dedicated to his work. He built bicycles, and roofed houses in high school, and started working for Paul Scales in April of 1989. He started working in the shop at the bottom of the totem pole. His friend and co-worker Billy Qualls would work hard right beside 126 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

him in the shop, and then after work they would cut firewood, and haul hay for extra spending money. He worked his way through the shop and quickly learned the intricate details of every station that is necessary to put the equipment together. Because of his attention to detail, and determination to be the best at everything he set his hand to, he rapidly moved through the business and caught the attention of the owner of the company at that time Mr. Adrian J. Paul. Adrian was the founder, and he had built the company from the ground up. Adrian, had built the business , and was travelling around the country to many of the shows, that Bo currently works with, and Adrian started sending him to do deliveries, and work in the barns setting up the scales for them to weigh the animals. Adrian was proud of his company and instilled a hard-working innovative spirit in the many who worked for them over the years, and he encouraged Bo to strive for his goals. Bo would jokingly tell him often... “One of these days, I’ll be doing your job,” and little did he know he would eventually travel more and touch more lives than Adrian could have ever imagined, and Bo was taking the scales that Adrian had patented to all the corners of the nation and farther. In 1991, Bo met and married his wife of 21 years, Jojeanna. She was a nurse and worked at the local hospital in Duncan. She had 2 little girls, Jessy Dee and Alexis, and Bo stepped into the role of father

loving the girls just as if they were his biological children. To this day, if you ask Jojeanna to tell her story she will say he rescued her and put her life back together at a time when she felt so alone and hopeless, and her eyes light up as she speaks of Bo, the love of her life. In 1993, they had another beautiful baby daughter, Jaden Danay, and to this day Alexis and Jaden constantly challenge each other trying to make Bo pick, “Which on is Truly… Daddy’s Girl?” He smiles and reminds them that he has several baby girls, and they all have a special place in his heart. And in 1995, they were blessed with a little baby boy, Jerron Edward. With 4 kids, and the demands of family Bo pushed himself and branched out looking for new horizons to help his company grow, and to maintain the image of a hard-working diligent father that he wanted his children to admire. He reached out to more of the larger livestock shows and began to broaden his horizons. And by the way, Bo is also the proud Papaw of 4 handsome grandsons who think he walks on water. Jaxon (8), Jake (5), Jasper (2) and Kaleb (1), are his greatest pride and joys, and each one of them know the show routine, and love to be on a forklift or in a booth somewhere spending time with their Papaw Bo. In 2000, the company was bought by W-W LiveNOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 127

stock Systems, and Bo became the salesman for the scale side quickly learning the livestock equipment/ rodeo side of the business and branching out to new horizons. The company was growing, and so were the demands on the sales and production, and the vision of a larger market. Bo has been travelling since long before that year, but the sales side of the company just seemed to mesh with his work weighing the livestock. He started in Houston, and San Antonio, and Denver’s National Western Stock Show and Rodeo, and rapidly branched out to Colorado State Fair, Aksarban River City Round-up in Omaha, Nebraska, American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri, Arkansas State Fair, in Little Rock, Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix, The Star of Texas in Austin, The World Pork Expo in Iowa, National FFA Conventions, and many local and distant stock shows, and fairs across the nation. With the help of many of the icons of the company Kirby Kelly, Ted Webster, Pat Carhart, and others that were fans and mentors for Bo he grew in the sales division, and continues to travel all over the United States, taking the products that he believes will help today’s ranchers, cowboys, and farmers raising their animals and training their children the art of showing animals and working with their projects on a day to day basis. Drive is definitely a huge part of Bo’s day to day existence putting hundreds of thousands of miles on his vehicle every single year. In the past 7 years besides his travels across the US selling equipment and working in the barns, Bo has taken the determination in his spirit spending vacation time working on a church in the Dominican Republic. He had taken his younger 2 children to Mexico with his wife on mission trips a couple of times and when God opened doors to work with Servants’ Heart Ministries in San Juan de la Manguna he felt the tugs on his heart, and with the help of many of his sponsors and friends he went with 2 different groups to help minister to some destitute villages, and help the people there build a church. Bo has always been known for his abilities to work things out, and to fix things. His work on the church along with the team of missionaries was very valuable and appreciated by the people in the Dominican, just as his work is valued and appreciated by the people he works with, in the many shows where he travels and works. Bo knows that Faith and Dedication to his Lord, 128 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

and his family are cornerstones in his life as he continues daily to fulfill his purpose. His relationship with God, builds his relationship with his family and his customers. He has a servants’ heart and believes in what he does on a daily basis, and though adversity is a part of life, with reliability and value for others, he carries his determination to work and places value in every part of his daily routine. Whether it is weighing the pigs in Arizona, or working with a rancher in Texas to build an arena to work his stock horses, Bo looks for ways to make people happy, and make their daily work easier. This is truly his calling, and the blessings he has received and passed on to others speak for themselves. ▪ The Showtimes is proud to induct Bo Sanders into the Hall of Fame. There are numerous components of the livestock industry: the producers and breeders, exhibitors, farmers, show supply companies, photographers, marketers, auctioneers... the list can go on an on. This month's Hall of Fame inductee is among one of the most valuable participants of our industry. We all know the importance of managing our project's weights. Bo is there at many of the nation's top livestock shows to ensure that everyone's livestock is weighed in accurately. The Reid family would like to personally thank Bo. He has weighed in literally hundreds of our cattle, hogs, sheep and goats over the years. We were always confident when we took an animal across the scale, because Bo was always honest, accurate, and reliable. Ultimately, the right weight can affect the outcome of a show and one's hard work just as much as the judge's opinion.

SCHOLARSHIP QUILT PROGRAM This is a Scholarship Program that was started in 2012 where a proceeds from selling a quilt are given away as scholarships. The 2012 Scholarship Recipients are: $1000 - Tyler Donnelly $500 - Melissa Grimmel $500 - Zach Bartenslager

HISTORY In the Spring of 2005, a group of approximately thirty like-minded cattleman who were interested in show cattle, met in a hotel conference room in Woodstock, Virginia. Out of that group, there were eighteen original members of the group that would become the Virginia Club Calf Producers Group. Originally, the main goal was to find a way to market our show calves and to hold a sale, where we could share our resources and abilities for the good of the group. As indicated in the decline of the number of people who attended the original meeting and those who actually jumped on board with the idea, we knew it was going to be a challenge, because we weren’t located in the Midwest where sales, shows, and show cattle interest is more mainstream. In a few months’ time, we organized the first Best of the Valley Sale in September of 2005, where we sold 32 steer and heifer prospects. We were fortunate to have a successful first sale and our collective success created the discussion that our group should tackle another challenge of having a quality prospect show , which didn’t exist east of Ohio and Louisville. We wanted to have the show at a time of year, when no other shows were being held, but still classify as a prospect or jackpot show. It was decided that the show would be held the last weekend of January. Due to the short time frame, the members put in a lot of time planning the new show, getting a quality judge, and finding as many sponsors as we could so that we could put on a first class event. Due to the hard work of the members, the supreme generosity of local, state, and national businesses

rooted in agriculture and non-agricultural fields, the VCCP Winter Classic was born. We held our first show in Fishersville, va in January of 2006 and were fortunate to have spring like conditions, which helped us have a great turnout. Harlan Yochum, from Oklahoma, sorted through 260 head of prospects and award the grand champion steer prize to Cory Krietz, of Maryland. The next year, the event was moved to Harrisonburg, VA and the event has grown every year and we have had cattle attend from thirteen different states. At our 2012 show, we had over 520 entries, our largest show to date. We have focused on making the show better every year and try to give as much back to the exhibitors as we can. With the help of our Major headline sponsors Purina and Farm Credit, who have both been with us from day one, we are able to give the exhibitors Prize money, hats, gloves, food vouchers, free bags of Purina feed, show halters, Clippers, garment bags, directors chairs in addition to $1000 to the Grand Champion Steer, $750 to the Reserve Grand Champion Steer, $750 to the grand champion heifer, and $500 to the reserve Grand Champion Heifer. These shows take a great deal of time and financial backing and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors. We wanted to make sure that everything exhibitor went home with something to show for their effort and hard work. We have had some challenges along the way, such as the snow storm that dropped about 11” of snow in Virginia on Friday night of our 2010 Show, where the temperature was in single digits at times during the show, but have continued to NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 THE SHOWTIMES 131

grow and been humbled by the support. In an effort to tie our sale and show together, the members of the group decided that we would hold a special futurity type class for those exhibitors who purchased animals out of our Best of Valley sale to Show in, free of charge. The winners of these classes receive the same prizes as the overall Champion and Reserve Champions of the show. These classes are sponsored by the VCCP, Begoon farms, and East Belmonte Farm. This was our way of giving back to those exhibitors who purchased calves out of our sale in the fall. We have also been very fortunate that some of the most well-known and respected people in the show cattle business have traveled to Virginia to judge our show. (List of judges below). One thing that we also wanted to focus on was to provide information and instruction to those exhibitors that were trying to learn, but didn’t necessarily know where to go to ask questions. Show Cattle pioneers such as Bob May, Kirk Stierwalt, and Dave Guyer have all given presentations on fitting, showing, and daily care. This year, John Sullivan, and Stock Show University attended our show and put on an excellent clinic to whoever wanted to attend. All of these demonstrations are free of charge and open to all of the exhibitors. Having these type of people that are accessible to our exhibitors and young people is a tremendous opportunity to gain knowledge for those who want to learn. At

our 2009 show, I remember a particular class of steers where there were some young exhibitors, where Judge Bob May addressed the class by saying the following “ When I first started showing, I was at that end of the ring (referring to the bottom end of the class) a lot more than I was at that end of the ring (referring to the top placing animals in the Class). He said “I listened to what people told me and tried to learn and went home and worked my rear end off to get better”. We have also had our show sponsor, Purina, give a short presentation each year on how to properly feed show animals to keep them looking and feeling their best. Due to the generosity of our sponsors and one particular family, we were able to start a scholarship program last year. At our 2011 show, The Comer Family, from Page County, Virginia donated a hand stitched quilt in honor of their grandfather, that read VCCP Winter Classic and bared the emblem of a show calf. We auctioned this quilt off to the audience, and from those funds, we presented (1) $1000 scholarship and (2) $500 scholarships at the 2012 Winter Classic

132 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

Show. The Comer family donated a quilt again this year, and we plan to use those proceeds along with the donations of many other people to continue that program this year. It was decided that the VCCP would contribute additional funds to this year’s program. In 2011, the VCCP decided to undertake a new endeavor, which was the idea of having a Consignment type Production sale during the weekend of our show in January. We wanted to hold a sale that would have something for everyone, open heifers, cows, bulls, embryo lots, all from several different breeds. This was extremely challenging because of time and effort that was required to run the show and we knew it would be difficult to prepare for a sale immediately after the heifer show on Saturday evening. In our first sale, we had 74 lots from 45 consignors, which ranged from members to people across the country. The sale was held at a local ball room, in a video style auction, where folks could come in a warm building, eat, and attend a cattle sale. All of the cattle were housed at the fairgrounds, where the show was held. The sale was a success and we plan to continue this event in 2013, which will be managed by Stock Options Marketing – Kevin Mears. Overall, we have been blessed to have members who are willing to work hard, volunteers who have contributed a lot of time and expect nothing in return, in addition to the hundreds of sponsors who have contributed to our show and sale’s success. ▪

Message

Where is Your Hope?

Fellowship of Christian Cowboys is now Save the Cowboy.

Titus 2:11-13 “For the grace of God, that bringeth salvation, hath appeared to all men. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Crhist.” Psalm 42:5 “Why art thou cast down, O my soul: and why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.”

BY BRAD HENDERSON, CO

“But I will HOPE continually, and will yet praise thee more and more. My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof. I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only. O God, thou hast taught me from my youth; and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to everyone that is to come. Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee! Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.” Psalm 71:14-20

This world is filled with storms. I’ve lived through some dark ones. So dark I thought I’d never get out of the pit I’d dug for myself. These pages of my Bible are almost worn through from all the times I’ve clung to every word to keep going. As I read it again, I felt each instance I was on my knees, crying out to my Heavenly Father, to save me from the train wreck my pride and arrogance had caused. I am living breathing proof there is a Living God and He is in total control of everything that happens in the universe He created. He is there. He’s always been there. And He will always be there. Even when we turn our back to Him. As I’ve said before, I fear the urbanization of America, has made it easier for people to believe the lie that everything you see happened by the god of chance. Folks in the city are surrounded by the works of man’s hands… (I have to note here - God blessed me with being one of those men that builds those buildings, and that’s how we keep the lights on and the kids, horses and cattle fed on the Henderson homestead). But there’s a poison that comes with depending on man, and believing any group of men can or will, provide all your needs… and provide meaning to your life. You don’t get very far in this life without learning the hard way that most human beings 136 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012

care about only one thing - themselves. If they can make you dependent on them then they have power over you. Folks say there’s “strings attached” to anything you get “for free”, but that’s not correct- there are ropes attached. Ropes that will bind you in servitude to your masters. This country was founded on Independence… NOT dependence on man. Our founding fathers made it very clear- our rights come from our Creator - therefore no king and no government could ever take them away. That knowledge made them unconquerable and uncontrollable by a tyrant. The more our ruling political class, and lap dog media, can tear us from our faith in the Truth of our Creator, the easier it is for them to rule over us. There is no hope and no meaning to life in the godless gospel preached in the public square today. Believe me, I turned my back on God and tried to find it there when I was in college. I tried to find hope in being the biggest and the best at whatever I set my mind to. Every time I’ve relied on me, or man, I ended up at the bottom of hole or at the center of a huge train wreck. True hope; true joy; true peace; true happiness can only be found in one place— our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I can’t explain the peace of knowing He is there and relying on Him every moment. He has written a message to you and all you have to do is read it and truly seek to understand who He is and who He made you to be and the awesome plan He has for your life. I beg you - don’t let this world keep you from being all He has made you to be and doing all the things He has planned for you. There is no feeling on earth like following and serving Him and no longer being bound by the gods worshipped by the world. ■ Save the Cowboy is located in Kiowa, Colorado. Meet the Exhibitor

Kempker Bros.

I

Evan and Trent

BY TRENT KEMPKER, MO

f you didn’t already know this…. Evan and I are brothers. I’m sure anyone who knows us has heard us bickering back and forth at shows or at home in the barn. It’s just a natural brotherly thing to argue. Our stubborn and competitive nature all stems from our love of raising and showing topnotch livestock. It’s why we get up before the crack of dawn, why we spend countless hours in the barn or the field and why we are constantly arguing over what’s right and what’s wrong. We love it and it’s what we share as brothers. Showing livestock wasn’t an instant passion, like some people may have had. My grandpa owned a farm and my dad helped out every day while we grew up. We learned the ins and outs of the commercial cattle business, but we didn’t begin showing competitively until we were a little older. We started off small showing bucket calves in 4-H and steers at the local level. After a few years of this and witnessing our cousin, Darren Binkley, win the Missouri State Fair Steer Show, Evan was hooked. He dove right into the larger shows with a steer named Elvis and some much needed help from Darren. He always had great animals

and helped to launch Evan into his showing career. I was around 8 when Evan started to get more involved in the industry and there was no way my mom was going to let me show a steer just yet, so I settled for hogs and progressed into the cattle shows later on. We both had a great deal of success at the local level, winning many titles at the surrounding local fairs. This wasn’t enough for us, we both had much tougher and prestigious goals in mind. Evan wanted to someday make the Sale of Champions at the Missouri State Fair, just like our cousin had done before and I wanted to win a grand champion title at a national show. Evan took a break from showing steers for a couple of years and moved his focus on exhibiting heifers and starting a quality herd of his own. His first heifer he bought was a solid white Shorthorn he called Delilah. They formed such a tight bond that it was nearly impossible to see them separated. They won numerous shows and she has since gone on to be the lead donor in his herd. Evan continued to show heifers for a couple more years, and honestly we all thought he’d never show another steer again. Our grandma, however, had other plans for Evan. During 2011, Evan’s last year to show our grandma told him, “Evan I want you to make the sale so go find you an amazing steer and let's see what happens.” Evan and Darren searched long and hard, but they finally found what they'd been looking for. Evan called his new steer, Nose. Yes it’s a weird name but if you had saw this steer’s nose when he got off the trailer

you’d understand. Nose didn’t make an appearance until the state fair and boy did he cause an up roar from those who didn’t know we had him. We all sat on the edge of our seats every time they graced the area with their presence. They won their class, they won their division and then they went on to win the Reserve Grand Champion steer at the Missouri State Fair. It was such an emotional and fulfilling moment to watch the man I look up to achieve his dreams and end his showing career with a bang. Evan ended his speech at the Sale of Champions by saying, “My goal was to make the Sale of Champions and I’ve now accomplished that, however I have a new goal now. My goal is to once again make the sale, not as an exhibitor but as a breeder of the Grand Champion steer at the Missouri State Fair.” As his brother and his business partner I can’t wait to see how Evan’s goal unfolds. Evan's accomplishments only motivated me toward reaching my dreams. During that same year, I attempted to convince Evan to help me show goats. We’d owned

sheep before but never a goat. He laughed at first, but he can’t say no to a good challenge. We took a stab at it and went looking for a nice goat to start out my goat showing career. We found a nice little guy. During his first days at home, Evan walked into the barn and said, “What’s up Willis?” The goat baa'd at him and from that day on his name was Willis. Willis turned out to be more than just a show goat, he was also turning into a family favorite. We loved him, not only because he was extremely good, but because he had the best personality of all the animals. (I think he was better than Delilah but Evan will beg to differ.) Willis and I reserved our division at the Missouri State Fair but didn’t make the sale. I was proud of what we’d accomplished and decided to try our luck at one more show, the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Livestock Exposition Show. We went there expecting to do well, but not to win the entire show. We ended up winning the Grand Champion title. I was so excited, but it honestly broke my heart to let such a special goat go. He took me to a new level and helped me discover my true

passion. The barn at home is now filled with many goats, but none will ever compare to Willis. Luckily I have many years to show left and I plan on showing every one of them. Evan however has turned his focus to developing his herd. The heifers he showed while in 4-H and FFA are now the foundation cows in his operation. We started out breeding and selling a few club calves, however we are now incorporating embryo transfer in our livestock program. In the upcoming years, we expect

to have some of the top prospects being exhibited at state and national shows. We could not be more excited to see where our new adventure takes us! We can’t continue to write this article without giving praise to our friends and family who have helped us get where we are today. Our parents, Dan and Diana, and our grandparents have kept us going when we wanted to give up and continued supporting us every step of the way. Our sister, Brooke, has been the middleman and mediator

when we had our disagreements. We’ve been lucky and have had many mentors during our showing careers such as Darren Binkley, Dave Guyer, Justin Morgan, Chastin Leggett and Kedrick Miller. We owe you big time for all your help and advice! We know we didn’t thank everyone but just know if you ever helped us out, we are very grateful for anything and everything you’ve done. Evan and I both still have big dreams and plans for the future. It’s going to take a lot of hard work

and dedication to get to where we’d like to end up someday but I know we can do it. I’m sure along the way, we will have our disagreements and scuffles like brothers do, but deep down we both know how proud we are of each other and how grateful we are for all the people who have helped us make it this far. We are brothers, best friends and business partners and I couldn’t have asked for a better person to share these life experiences with. ▪

After a special trip to Nashville, TN to work with our website company on developing a special iPhone App, we introduced it in Denver! The new Showtimes App offers many cool features including Twitter, Facebook, Blog, our Website, Biography, Show Videos, and News! We decided to offer this new iPhone App for free! Our favorite part of the new app is the ability for anyone with the app to access show videos we filmed! Now you can watch videos from shows like Ak-SarBen, the American Royal, NAILE, Badger, Colorado State Fair or Maine-Anjou Junior Nationals! It is updated daily, so there is always something new to check out! Wether it is our cool new website we introduced in 2011 or our new iPhone App, we are always looking for new ways to stay on top of the industry with technology!
