Vita Hair Volumizer
™
Foaming Shampoo
The first livestock shampoo to scientifically produce hair volume! Vita Hair Volumizer™ Foaming Shampoo is formulated with a natural plantbased proprietary surfactant technology which creates an opposite acting polar electrical charge within each hair strand that actually pushes every hair follicle apart. This prevents the hair from sticking together, and actually springs it loose, making each hair follicle stand on end for a noticeable difference in hair volume and body. Fortified with Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ a nourishing vitamin package to boost hair and skin health without added weight to hair. Designed to be used in a foamer. A true “game changer” in hair performance!
Sullivan’s
Hair Savior
™
Adhesive Breakdown
Hair Savior™ is just that! Finally, a liquid adhesive breakdown that is healthy for your leg hair. Hair Savior™ adhesive breakdown features a proprietary blend of the purest, mild cosmetic grade plant-based ester technologies to naturally attack and gently remove adhesives and touch-ups away from the hair. These specific plant based surfactants have been specially identified for their unique ability to naturally counter-act the tackiness of adhesives, changing their rubberized molecular resin structure to gently dissolve the bond from the hair without any harsh stripping action. This properly balanced pH formula prevents heavy, oily residues and will not create heat. Contains the Sullivan’s VITA HAIR™ nourishing vitamin package. Hair Savior™ is the first liquid adhesive breakdown product with added hair vitamins to hydrate and regenerate the hair. Mild and gentle, no harsh chemicals like other removers. Hair Savior™ ... the showman’s choice for repetitive show schedules and leg hair health!

NO REGRETS
T
Reflecting on 2013 and the journey there. his edition of THE SHOWTIMES not only reflects the end of 2013, but it also coincides with the end of my family’s junior show career. Over the past twenty years, Brian, Lisa and I have traveled the country exhibiting cattle, hogs, goats, and lambs. In doing so, we have made lifelong friendships, gained irreplaceable knowledge, and built a career with the magazine that will allow us to stay involved in the livestock industry for many years to come. When Lisa was walking her steer across the scale in our barn for the very last time, she broke down. It was an emotional moment for our family as that not only symbolized the closure of this year’s project, but the closure of our family’s entire junior show career. Our family has been blessed with thousands of hours together in the barn, truck, office, or at a show. Although we were working towards the goal of being successful in the show ring, the
time we spent together is what made it all worthwhile. Showing gets in your blood. It is an expensive addiction that is worth every penny. Kid Rock summed it up perfectly, “If it looks good, you’ll see it. If it sounds good, you’ll hear it. If it’s marketed right, you’ll buy it. But if it’s real…you’ll feel it.” God has been instrumental all throughout my family’s show career and life; and I can proudly say we are going out with absolutely no regrets. As one door closes, another one opens. Louisville marks the end of one era for the Reid family; but the livestock industry runs in our veins. We may not be back in another junior show ring, but we will definitely be back. Sincerely,
Laurie Reid Owner

Scholarships Granted By Livestock Auction Sales at Ak-Sar-Ben Thirty-two scholarships were provided at the Ak-SarBen 4-H Stock Show’s Purple Ribbon Auction Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at CenturyLink Center Omaha. The auction, which culminates the largest 4-H Stock Show in the nation, showcased champions from across a 10-state region, bringing the best to the stage for the auction supporters and buying groups. “Exhibitors in the auction represent the best of nearly 1,500 animals shown at the Stock Show. All of the participating 4-H youths deserve credit for the long path and dedicated hard work it has taken to get their show animals to a point of competition,” said Stephanie Harlan, Ak-Sar-Ben Buyers Club Committee Chairperson. She spoke clearly of the Ak-Sar-Ben Buyers Club mission to ensure the continuation of the AkSar-Ben 4-H Stock Show and encourage the education of youth in agriculture while acquainting the business community with tomorrow’s leaders. The evening began with a meet and greet with the champion 4-H youths and their families, a cocktail
hour followed as buyers had the opportunity to peruse the livestock in the exhibit hall. The dinner and auction followed in the junior ballroom, beginning with the Grand Champion Market Steer and ending with renowned “back of the barn” donation lots. More than 300 guests bid on 52 lots totaling $259,225. That total will support the 32 livestock exhibitors’ scholarships; six Ak-Sar-Ben Agricultural Art Contest prizes and awards, prizes and ribbons for the 1,200 4-H exhibitors in the 2013 Stock Show. Ak-Sar-Ben’s River City Rodeo & Stock Show is an annual celebration of the region’s heritage that benefits and educates families and youth. With an economic impact of more than $23 million, it includes three core events: the Justin Boots Championships Rodeo, the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show and the Douglas County Fair. Visit the rivercityrodeo.com for a complete list of activities, opportunities for volunteerism or ticket information.

RECIPE FROM STACY KERSTEN'S MOM, THE LATE JUDY NICOLAISEN FROM STACY KERSTEN, NE SHOWTIMES TIP>>>ADD BERRIES & POWDERED SUGAR FOR A SPECIAL TOUCH!
Kersten Cattle Co is based at Gretna, NE right off I-80 between Omaha & Lincoln. It began as a "hobby" giving Kevin, a truck driver, and Stacy, a physical therapist, an opportunity to "get back to their roots". Kevin grew up in NE raising Simmental and commercial cattle, while Stacy was raised in SD primarily in the Hereford and commercial breeds. Today, with Kevin's parents, Larry & Judy, and daughters, Stephanie & Korie, Kersten Cattle has grown to approximately 200 head of Maine Anjou, Chi, Red Angus, Simmental, and commercial cattle. The Kersten family can be found traveling many weekends with their "show family" to shows across the states. In addition to the Maine Anjou & Chianina Junior National show, one of the family favorites is the American Royal in Kansas City. Hopefully, the family Christmas picture can be taken at the backdrop! We wish to welcome anyone interested in discussing and looking at cattle to visit us in Gretna. See our website www.kerstencattleco.com for directions. Know that the goal of Kersten Cattle continues to be breeding and raising cattle that do well producing high quality offspring, as well as, cattle that do well in the feedlot and sale ring. 38 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013

Bob May and Kirk Stierwalt are both well known in the show cattle industry. Each of their sons, Brock and Ky have been successful in the ring winning major shows such as Kansas City, Louisville and Denver. We recently visited with them about working together and hosting fitting clinics across the country.
BOB MAY Bob's view on Brock's coming up through the junior ranks; Brock and Ky are close in age, so they competed head to head on numerous occasions. They became good friends early on and have remained that way, only on that given show day, they were competitors, they both had a goal in mind! It is fun to watch those two working together passing on the things they have learned coming up through this sport we call cattle showing! It has allowed Brock to give back to an industry that has given him so much. I got to go watch Brock judge his first cattle show this summer. Frankly, that was emotional
for me, I was proud watching him work the cattle and the time he took with the kids! If I could pass along some advice to parents who are young in your kids show careers, soak it all in, the time flies by way to fast! I vividly remember Brock's first show heifer, when he was 8 years old and having her at the Jr. Nationals. Even more vivid, I remember that August day last summer when he pulled out of our driveway to head to college, it didn't seem possible! Kirk and I competed head to head as fitters when we got started, and have been great friends the whole way. It's great to see our sons carry on.
44 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
BROCK MAY During a nice conversation with Brock May about life and catching up, I asked him about his take in his and Ky Stierwalt's breakthrough into the cattle fitting clinic world. He replied, "It is a true honor. I find it cool how dad [Bob May] and Kirk grew up competing against each other. It was friendly competition; they were fiends outside of the show ring, but, of course wanted to beat the other on show day. Throughout their show careers they exchanged tips and information that led them to gain both respect and success. I grew up seeing and learning about their relationship and involvement,
as did Ky. In regards to fitting clinics, there is nobody better than Kirk Stierwalt. After watching and being a part of many of his and my dad's clinics, I feel it is an incredible opportunity to continue on with what two of the best are doing. It was really cool. Last year when Weaver Leather asked Ky and I to put on a clinic for the Texas Jr. Livestock Association in College Station, TX. One of my favorite things was getting to spend one-on-one time with the kids following the clinic and helping them learn. Ky and I are scheduled to do more clinics and I hope the trend continues.
TOP PHOTO AND BOTTOM MIDDLE PHOTO LEGACY LIVESTOCK IMAGING
KIRK STIERWALT Ky and Brock doing these clinics is truly what our industry is all about. We raise our kids around livestock, give them direction in the show ring, and provide them with a sense of commitment and responsibility. Any time you have a family member, as I do with Ky, participate in something you both have a passion for, is an irreplaceable family
affair. In fact, working as a family is what 4-H and FFA is built on. While not always possible, living everyday generational - working together on something and enjoying what you are doing as a team is a great experience. Being able to pass on what I know to Ky and help him get to where he wants to be, all while sharing that same passion, is pretty awesome!
KY STIERWALT A lot of the reason I have been successful is due to the fact that I had the best teachers - and I'm sure Brock feels the same way. I am so glad I have been given the opportunity to help kids interested in the industry and teach them things about cattle that I have accumulated over the years. It is my way of returning the favor. I still have a long ways
to go to fill dad's [Kirk Stierwalt's] shoes, but I want to do more clinics and continue to stay involved in the show cattle industry. Both families sincerely appreciate Purina and Weaver for the oppotunity to continue doing what they love.

R A young lady who has captured her passion for the livestock industry with a camera and shared it with others. BY: CHLOE GEYE, TX
ising Star, Texas, is the place that I call home. My family has deep roots in the area that date back to the forties. One thing stayed consistent throughout the generations and that is a love for the agricultural lifestyle. I was no exception. My parents raised me to love the land, cattle, and farm life. Like many others I grew up showing cattle, hogs, and just a few sheep and goats. I was consumed with the stock show life. If I wasn’t in an FFA meeting or on the volleyball court then I was in the barn working with my steers and heifers. When it came time to further my education there was no question where I was going to attend. I now attend Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and am a senior Animal Science and Agriculture Communications and Journalism double degree student. Even when I was young I knew that I wanted to be a connection between cattle and people.
I found what I was looking for through photography and video. I currently freelance picture and video livestock when my busy school schedule allow. It’s always fun getting to go to help producers advertise and sell their cattle through my lens. You may have seen me this summer at some of the junior national shows at the Sure Champ booth. I had the pleasure of being a part of the Sure Champ team as the public relations intern. If you liked many of their photos from this summer’s junior national shows I might have taken them. I am very proud to say that I now have the opportunity to be one of the three Vita Charge Mini Interns for the next year. I really love working with the great people at BioZyme, Inc. and promoting their great products. I really have had the chance to learn so much from all of my experiences thus far. The further I go in life the deeper my conviction grows that those of us in the agriculture industry are truly the best. Now in this day and age it is more important than ever to show the world what agriculture is all about. I try and be a good advocate for our industry wherever I go and I would like to challenge you to do the same. ▪

TRENT RAY Advice, insight, and motivation from a young man that has grown up, seen success, and been influenced by the livestock industry. BY: TRENT RAY, IL
H
i, I’m Trent Ray. I am currently studying at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma where I am a Sophomore and a member of the Livestock judging team. After completing my undergraduate degree, I would like to study to be a large animal veterinarian. Naturally, I would like to run cows and be involved with youth events to keep the future of our industry alive. When I was contacted to share a story about myself for THE SHOWTIMES MAGAZINE, I really wasn’t sure where to begin. I have read the articles about all of the people that I have looked up to for so many years and wondered what I could possibly say that could stack up to their successes. I thought about
meet the exhibitor
some of the things I wanted to share not only about me, but also about what I have learned through my experiences in barn and on the shavings. I came to realize just exactly how many things I have learned from the agricultural industry and the great people that I have gotten to know along the way. Growing up in Abingdon, Illinois, small town living was the only way of life. I was active in sports from an early age playing baseball, basketball and football throughout junior high and high school. My past teammates, coaches, and family have all had a huge impact on my sports career. If I had to pick just one person that had the biggest impact on my career; it would be my older brother Nathan. He has constantly pushed me to do my very best in every aspect of life, not just sports. After having four very successful years in high school sports, I was fortunate enough to have had a chance to be a part of a program that prides themselves on hard work and dedication at the University of Western Illinois (WIU). Since I had been red-shirted that year, I was still allowed to show. Unfortunately, several injuries had occurred in the short period of time that I was there. When thinking it over and talking
with my parents, I realized that I couldn’t keep playing football and that I should fall back into what I knew how to do best, working and showing livestock. Shortly after the first semester of school at Western Illinois University, I was packed up and headed down to the great state of Oklahoma. I would soon be enrolled at Redlands Junior College in El Reno, Oklahoma and taking part on their livestock judging team. I have had the opportunity to compete at several junior nationals across three breeds – Angus, Hereford and MaineAnjou. Naturally, like all of the other exhibitors across the nation, I went to show, compete in the contests, and of course, catch up with friends that I hadn’t had the opportunity to see since the last stock show. While we were there, we took part in the contests that each breed’s junior coordinator and junior boards had planned out for us. Some of my favorites were the judging contest, team fitting, quiz bowl, salesmanship and of course showmanship and the famous 3-on-3’s they put together. As the end of my junior career is rapidly approaching, this past summer I was graced with success that I had only dreamed about in the past. In July, we were selected
as the Reserve Grand Champion Polled Female at the 2013 Hereford Junior Nationals. It definitely took awhile for that one to sink in. It was such a huge accomplishment for not only myself, but my family and everyone involved. Shortly after Junior Nationals, at my last Illinois State Fair Junior Show, the same heifer was name the Grand Champion Female. It was certainly an emotional win as it was the closing of a chapter of my junior show career. Along the way, I have several who have helped me with my success with livestock. I would be wrong just to say one person in particular. I had several role models growing up, but most importantly my family. They were always there to help and teach me. Dad always had good people around to help teach me the ropes and Mom was always there for support and pointing out the lessons to be learned from every situation. My oldest brother, Tyler, is undoubtedly the hardest worker that I know. My other brother, Nathan, led by great example in every aspect of life, as he made me realize that hard work and dedication would pay dividends in the long run. Last, but definitely not least, my sister Aaren… without her “bossiness”, Lord only knows
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 55
where I could’ve landed along the way, but she most definitely was always looking out for her “little brother”. In the moment, it’s easy to lose sight of these things and just exactly why we do what we do and who can accredit our success to, but I do know that if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I am so thankful to be surrounded and loved by such great teachers. I have so many who have made an impact on me from the time I was very young and I think that it is so important to make a positive impact on those who are younger than you because they all need to have someone to look up to. I would like to share a few things that I have learned along the way with younger cattle enthusiasts. There will never be a loss to be described as the “worst”. Now, I realize that everyone gets upset and doesn’t agree with that one man’s opinion on that certain day, but you still have to value his opinion and way of sorting the cattle. Now, for the people that have helped me along the way, I certainly owe a lot to all of you, for not only helping get the
"It's a marathon, not a race...the hard work, dedication and discipline must begin in the barn."
cattle ready, but for teaching me a lot along the way. If I haven’t said it enough, I want to say it again – Brandon Jones, Bobby Maddox, Cory Thomson, Dan Kelley, Luke Doris, Todd Caldwell and all of their crews. A few of the other special supporters through the years have are Ben Martin, Bart Herndon, Brad Onion, Donny Robertson, Jason Roeder, Mark Squires, Michael Stultz, Miles Shout, Reva Stachniw, Roye Stephens, Shane Vanzant, Shannon Cook, Bob Funk and Tom Lincoln. Thank you! When thinking of true cattlemen, three well respected men in the industry come to mind: Jim Bloomberg, Jirl Buck, and John Griswold. When seeing these three names, the first thing that comes to mind is honesty. I have always gone to these men when seeking guidance or advice. There isn’t a thing that they wouldn’t do to help anyone out, at any point in time. Growing up around these men has truly been an honor. My admiration for hardworking, honest people has driven me to want to earn the same respect that they have acquired through their years. Through college and my time spent in the ring under numerous judges has also prompted me to appreciate those who can apply practical knowledge with their production experience that they can utilize in their evaluation. Some of my favorites are Dan Hoge, Dave Allen, Dave Duello and Kevin Jensen. Just watching them sort livestock and seeing how dedicated guys are to the cattle business and its’ next generation is astounding. No matter the outcome, I can learn something from them every time they pick up a mic. Lastly, one individual that I can truly depend on to understand all facets from both a production and business side of the industry, is Jarold Callahan. His respect has been earned through the respect given to him by all aspects of the cattle world. He’s truly an aspiring role model and one of the most knowledgeable people that I have had the opportunity to be associated with. As my junior national career is within two years of coming to a close, I experience more and more professional opportunities. I am able to put the lessons that I learned from each of these contests into real-life application. Looking back, these are the biggest shows to compete in across the country and even though not everyone will have a “barn burner,” there’s no doubt that the leaders of the industry walk out of the show ring and contest rooms with their heads held high as these lessons will stick with them as they become career professionals for the agricultural industry.▪

the interview...
FAVORITE QUOTE? “It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.” -Vince Lombardi
WHAT AGE DO YOU FIRST REMEMBER BEING AROUND LIVESTOCK? There isn’t a specific age that I actually remember being around livestock. Since I couldn’t remember exactly what my first experience was at a livestock show, I consulted my mom, who would surely remember. “We took you everywhere with us, even before you could walk. You have always being around livestock.” –Carol Ray. WHAT ARE SOME STOCK SHOW MEMORIES FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD? Most might say it was running around on the wash racks, having water fights or playing in the dirt with their friends that kept them going back weekend after weekend. I always found that the “cool” thing to do was to hang around my older brothers while they were working on their livestock - both cattle and pigs. I learned a lot from those two and still do to this day. They both taught me what hard work and dedication really is and what it stands for. There are five of us in my family, with me being the youngest. My older brothers, Tyler and Nathan played a huge role in getting me involved and
my older sister, Aaren was always there to encourage me in her own sisterly way, which usually ended with her telling me that I should’ve just listened to her from the get go! Needless to say, my brothers and sister played an instrumental role in my desire to spend time with the cattle and hogs because it was something that we could all take a part in as a family. WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST MEMORABLE WIN IN THE RING? The show ring memories began at the bottom of the ramp, on the green shavings in Louisville’s Freedom Hall. As a 10 year old, I dragged one very special Hereford heifer around that year. I could not have asked for a better companion. Her personality was second-to-none. As we all know, we can become very attached to our livestock. She and I were inseparable! From then on, I knew I was hooked! IF YOU COULD PASS A FEW WORDS ONTO YOUNGER SHOW ENTHUSIASTS, WHAT WOULD IT BE? If there is one thing that I can pass along to young showmen, just remember - it’s a marathon, not a race. I know everyone wants to win, but winning isn’t everything. People you see will always value your hard work and dedication, win or lose.
Work toward the future to better yourself. Hard work and dedication are musts. If you take the shortcut, you may end up not liking your results come show day. Set goals – it gives you something to work toward and achieve. It’s all about the work, day in and day out. Show day preparation is only a minor factor of what it takes to win. The hard work, dedication and discipline must begin in the barn. Always remember what Thomas Jefferson said, “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” Sportsmanship; whether you win or lose, you should do it in a respectful and humble manner. Treat others as you would want to be treated. IF YOU COULD PASS A FEW WORDS ONTO OLDER SHOW ENTHUSIASTS, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I think some need to be reminded of why we do what we do in this industry. People often lose sight of why we really travel all of the miles to show and compete against one another. That being said, I realize that the industry is a business and a lifestyle for some. I know we all like to make money, but it is about the youth and teaching them values and morals that will stay with them for a lifetime. After all, they are the future of this industry.

EUGENE RITCHEY
Ritchey Manufacturing Company
V
BY LISA REID (INTERVIEW WITH EUGENE RITCHEY)
irtually every individual involved in the livestock industry has used, or is familiar with, Ritchey Ear Tags. What the majority of these individuals do not recognize, is the story behind their livestock identification system. Ritchey Manufacturing Company, based out of Brighton, Colorado, has been improving livestock identification since Eugene Ritchey and his wife, Jo, started it in 1963 with the invention of the one piece, flexible tag with a permanent paint application. The Showtimes Magazine got the inside scoop from Gene and his son Craig Ritchey at the family owned and operated business, located just south of Brighton, Colorado. According to Gene’s mother, he began inventing things before he could even crawl. In fact, he patented his first invention, hydraulics and welding loaders, at the young age of seventeen. Seeing how the use of the well-established hot brand was painful on livestock, Gene invented a less painful form of identification, freeze branding. The invention that has made him the best known throughout the livestock industry, however, is his new and improved ear tags. He
64 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
created his first ear tags with the use of an old press and a mechanism that is comparable to a cookie cutter. Over forty long years later, Ritchey Manufacturing is still up and running with the help of Gene, and his children Grant, Craig, and Becci. Jo, who passed away in 2001, was very instrumental in the company's success. As Gene puts it, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without her.” Ritchey achieved his success and outstanding reputation with his wife, Jo, by his side. Jo Ritchey was not only the vice president and owner of Ritchey Manufacturing, but she was also extremely active in the community. She was a member of the District 27J Board of Education, the community Drug and Alcohol Task Force, and the Brighton Chamber of Commerce board of directors. In 1987, Jo was named the Woman of the Year by the Brighton Business and Professional Women’s Association. Jo’s memory will always be a part of Ritchey Manufacturing. The dual color engravable tag (a three layer tag allowing for the top layer to be engraved off to expose the idle layer as a permanent number) now has a selection of four styles and twelve tag/core color combinations.

Eugene Ritchey November 2013
The most popular is the universal two-piece tag, using a male button. The expanding manufacturing business also produces identification products for electrical companies, nurseries, vineyards, wildlife organizations and sports camps. In 1989, Beef Magazine honored Gene as one of the twenty-five people who had made a difference in the cattle business and whose contributions during the last quarter-century made a lasting impact. In 1996, the Colorado FFA Foundation inducted Gene into the Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame. Animal ID goes back to Biblical times, where people used colored yarn to identify and separate their animals. As times progressed, and technology advanced, so did the methods of identifying livestock, by way of the Ritchey’s creative ear tags. They have had to make changes over the years with what customers wanted. What makes Ritchey Manufacturing unique is the fact that the Ritchey family not only creates different forms of identification and tools for the livestock industry, but the fact that they are involved in agriculture every day. They understand what the industry needs, because its bottom line is their bottom line. Being raised on a dairy farm and being associated with the farming and ranching industry all his life, Gene Ritchey’s goal was to make the best products possible.
In addition to livestock, nontraditional animals as well wear Ritchey’s ear tags. Ritchey’s tags have been used on everything imaginable all across the globe. When a letter arrived at Ritchey Manufacturing from a fishery in Australia, Gene was shocked to learn that they wanted to use a Ritchey tag to identify a shark that was caught in the Great Barrier Reef. Therefore, Gene did research on marine life, and accommodated the fishery’s needs. Many Ritchey ear tags are used in Africa. The tags made in Brighton, Colorado, stand up to Africa’s harsh conditions. The world’s largest lion, which is said to be eleven feet long, is tagged with the same Ritchey ear tag that those of us in the livestock industry use on our animals. The Ritchey family takes pride in being an American based company, and will continue to be an important asset to the livestock industry for years to come. Although there has been a lot of competition and obstacles to overcome, Gene Ritchey summed up Ritchey Manufacturing Company’s success, “Prayer, Patience, and Perseverance Produce Prosperity!” ▪
Congratulations Eugene! Thanks for all that you have done for our industry! - The Showtimes Magazine

prices they brought, it was an interesting year to say the least. We looked at cattle in over 100 degree heat and that wasn’t fair to the breeder, to the cattle, or to us, but we did the best we could to work through it. In some cases we looked at cattle in tall grass, in the pond, on the side of what seemed to be a 45 degree hill, and sometimes at a flat run; and if you think I’m kidding, trust me, these all happened.
O
h boy!... Steve and I just got home from our long club calf buying trip that stretched from Pennsylvania to Colorado and what a trip it was. We saw things we have never seen before on this one. Whether it was the weather, the conditions we looked at cattle in, or the

The weather we can’t control, so you, me and everybody in between just did the best we could. As far as conditions we looked at some calves in are concerned, they are human controlled. If you’re presenting your cattle for sale I will let you in on a little secret: tall grass keeps people from buying; they can’t see the calf and especially their feet. Buyers think you are trying to hide something. No matter how much of a veteran cattle evaluator you might think you are, people will not buy a calf that just came from the pond. They all look slick legged, wiener bodied and fine boned. Next, when you put your cattle in a pasture where the hills are so steep that you don’t need a ball retriever to get your golf balls, I am pretty doggone sure those calves aren’t going to walk well for prospective buyers. Now to explain the golf ball retriever thing for those of you that are thinking, “What the heck is he talking about?” It’s when you can stand on one side of your pasture, pull any club out of your bag, tee off, and no matter how far you
hit it, the hill’s so steep that the ball will roll back. Now, in this breeder’s defense they don’t always have them in this pasture; we just got there a little early one morning and they hadn’t got them out and to the “show pasture”. Just for the record, Tim, this was all in good fun and made for a good story. LOL! Last, but not least, and the older I get, people and myself will not buy something that you can’t get close enough to look at due to the speed of the fastest cow in the pasture. Now Leroy doesn’t raise club calves anymore but when he did, I’m not sure we ever got under 30 MPH. Those of you that know him know what I’m talking about. Hope he reads this because I know it’ll give him a good laugh. If you’re going to sell cattle out of the pasture then take the time to mow the grass, hot wire the pond off, give them a shade tree, put them in a place as level as possible, and for goodness sake get that wild cow out of the pasture. The last obstacle to overcome was the prices, and they have never been so high. Cattle in general are high right now but these show cattle are higher. Are we selling better cattle or are we selling the same cattle but just for higher prices? Three very respected guys in the business were given the question, “How do you grade the cattle in the country side on a regular classroom grading scale?” The reply might shock you… all three guys wrote it down and the response was C-, C, and C-. Now don’t get me wrong that’s a passing grade. But when there is a club calf, steer or heifer born on every street corner, they all can’t be worth the moon and all win a show. Then to top it all off, no one as a breeder or seller wants to take responsibility for the cattle they sell. You can buy a calf and from the time they say “sold” to when you can get back to pick them up that seller wants you to pay the feed bill, the vet bill, and even be responsible for a death loss. No breeding or disposition guarantees? Come on people, we in the cattle business are a tight knit group, let’s be better
than today’s world we live in. Let’s try to breed better cattle, sell them the best we can, and both buyer and seller have some kind of accountability and do good business. There has been some fun in this story but there is something for all to learn also… if a buyer is going to leave their own home, drive with their own gas, take the time to look at your cattle, and possibly have to turn around and do that all again if they buy something, present those cattle to best of your ability. Evaluate your own cattle and if you are fortune enough to raise them good enough to sell, because that ain’t easy, remember: a show calf that you can’t lead is not a show calf, a heifer that is not bred is not a cow, and an unhappy customer is not a return customer. Now buyers don’t think I am all on your side because the respect factor goes both ways. These sellers work hard and want you to take care of them to the best of your ability; and if something goes wrong throughout the year it doesn’t mean you go running back to the seller wanting your money back. These breeders and sellers have a lot at risk, as well as you do all through the year of that project. If we all knew the future there would be no need for a show. Let’s raise good kids with good cattle and if we all work together the numbers at these shows will increase. Well, that’s enough of my venting for this month. Remember, you are raising, selling, and buying premium cattle at premium prices, so don’t let the breeder, seller, or yourself down by cutting corners on your feed. Feed a premium product like ShowRite feed! See ya in Louisville. ■

THIRD OVERALL STEER 2013 IOWA STATE FAIR
THE STORY BOOK YEAR
T
Grand Champion Steer BY ALEXIS HANSON, IA
everything.
beyond the backdrop
he year 2013 has been the most exciting year of my life. In the past seven years that I’ve been showing cattle I have never won anything, but this year my Charolais steer (Zeus) changed
Since the first day I got him I knew there was something unique about him. He was always so kind and gentle with me. I noticed every day that our bond was getting stronger, when I worked with him. The first time I knew he was special was when we went to our first cattle show together at the Iowa Winter Beef Expo. I’ll never forget how nervous I was when I first walked into the show ring. The only thing that was keeping me calm was my calf. He looked me in the eyes with pure confidence and gave me that smirk as if saying, “We can do this.” We went out there and worked together as a team. Soon when the time came, I won the class. The next thing I know, we went back in to pick the Champion Charolais Steer. It was my first time ever winning anything that was “major.” After I won it, Zeus reached his head up to mine and licked me as if giving me a kiss.
112 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
February ended and I knew the Webster County Fair was right around the corner. Show day came and Zeus and I were in the final drive. The judge was taking his time trying to figure who would win. Next thing I know the judge came up to me and selected Zeus as the 2013 Grand Champion Market Steer at the Webster County Fair. The only saying that popped in my head was “Who said white couldn’t win…” Since I won the Webster County Fair I received an offer to go to the Central Iowa Showdown, which is where seven different counties come together with their Grand Champion animals to compete. This took place in Webster City, Iowa. It was an exciting moment to compete with the neighboring counties. This was my third “major” show with my calf. And he being the only white calf out of the seven, I managed to win again. It’s always nice to win, but to me it’s about having fun with the one thing you love most. Putting all the hard work, labor, and love into showing cattle is what makes you a true Champion. No matter if you win or lose, you are still a Champion. By the time Iowa State Fair came around I thought I had no chance of winning Champion Charolais or even placing in
AK-SAR-BEN STOCK SHOW the top five overall market animals. From all the great calves that were there I knew it would be tough. But also in the back of my mind I knew all my hard work would pay off. I won Champion Charolais Steer and received third overall. At that moment I cried. I’ve never been so proud of my calf or myself. I couldn’t have done it without my family, friends, and the people from whom I bought my steer. Aksarben has always been a very tough, but fun show. I loved it every year that I’ve been there. But I’ve never thought I would be able to say I had the Grand Champion Market Steer. But, I had realized that colored calves can win. It’s been such an honor to be down there and show. Being the only colored calf in the final drive was something I never expected. The emotions that were going through me were nothing I’d ever experienced. When the moment came and the judge selected me, I felt overwhelmed. I couldn’t believe I won. Honestly I still can’t believe it. Part of me felt sad because I wasn’t ready to let go of
my calf yet. He was my best friend and my cuddle bug. Zeus was the type of calf who would play with you, give you kisses, and even wrap his head around you to give you a hug. The most unexpected year of my life was 2013. Even though I am a senior this year at Southeast Webster- Grand High School of Burnside, Iowa, I am also part of the Dayton Tiger 4-H club and Prairie Valley FFA. I still have one year left to show and I am going to enjoy every moment of it. All I can say is thank you; to my parents Russ and Julie Tucker of Gowrie, IA; Phil, Rachel, and employees of Halbach Cattle Company of Woolstock, IA; Chris Ford of Estelline, SD; Ryan and Courtney Goehring of Random Lake, WI; Stephanie and Renee Mack of Watertown, SD; and too all the fitters who have helped me at every show I’ve gone to. Thank you all for everything you’ve ever done. I couldn’t have done it without you! Sincerely, Alexis Hanson of Gowrie, IA ▪

JUDGE'S THOUGHTS... This was my second year to judge the market cattle at Ak-Sar-Ben. Like last year, I was impressed with the quality of cattle, but even more impressed with the quality of the young people. First class facilities and excellent planning and operation by staff and volunteers create a very enjoyable experience. Though a little larger than what I consider to be ideal, I was truly pleased with the grand champion steer. It’s somewhat rare to find a steer that combines stoutness, soundness and apparent carcass merit in such an attractive package. Best regards,
Joel Cowley

ENVIRONMENT
kent jaecke
The backstory of a familiar face. BY: KENT JAECKE, OK
>>>>>>>>>
148 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
n April of 1962, the fate of a man began. He wasn’t born in a livestock or ranching family, his family history didn’t include any interest in animal agriculture, sales and marketing or livestock merchandising, but Kent Jaecke has spent his entire life promoting, marketing and merchandising livestock. You might even call it his passion. You see, Jaecke’s parents adopted him in the spring of 1962, and you could say that his life’s path was created totally from his environment. Raised on a 450 head commercial cow/calf farm and ranch near the flint hills of Kansas, his father taught him at
an early age the importance of rising early, working long hard hours, and instilled in him the work ethic and desire to do what you love, and love what you do. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled at Kansas State University, and under the guidance of such great industry leaders as Dr. Miles McKee, his passion for livestock, and more importantly, the promotion and merchandising of livestock, grew into a life long commitment. In the spring of 1983, Jaecke was selected to be a student ringman for the annual Kansas State University bull sale. After the sale, the late Col. Stanley Stout pulled him off to the side and offered even more advice, which led to his career path in the livestock marketing industry. He found out during that very first sale that his passion for the auction business, working in front of a crowd, and creating excitement and energy at the sale was something that he was born to do. Jaecke has spent the last 30 years representing and working for some of the

livestock industry’s most prolific programs in many breeds. On his way through life he has had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest organizations throughout the industry including The High Plains Journal, the American Polled Hereford Association, The American Shorthorn Association, and the Western Livestock Journal. This past year, Jaecke has also become a board member on the Livestock Publication Council. Over the past 30 years, he has had the distinct pleasure and honor to have worked with some of the greatest auctioneers in the history of the livestock industry, including Ray Sims, Ken Trout, Skinner Hardy, George Morse, Merrill Anderson, Jim Baldridge, Eddie Sims, C.K. “Sonny” Booth, Jim Birdwell, Bruce Brooks, Steve Dorran and the incomparable Stanley Stout. Some of the greatest life lessons Jaecke has learned happened standing around a sale ring over the years, where he has worked with over 100 different auctioneers and countless fellow ringmen. Jaecke said, ”When I NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 149
>>>>>
>>>>> first started working the ring I never started many sales, so I would watch other guys work the ring, and pattern my style after the great ones, including ringmen like Ken Torr, Fred “Hoss” Shaw, Lyle Eaton, Neil Orth and Johnny Winston.”. He added, “It was their influence that added to my confidence and my ability to create more excitement and energy into every sale I work.” In 2000, Jaecke started his own marketing company, J Bar Livestock Marketing, assisting livestock producers across the entire U.S. in the marketing of their cattle through productions sales, private treaty transaction and consulting on marketing strategies. He currently works the ring at over 100 sales each year in several breeds, including Shorthorn, Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Hereford, Red Angus, MaineAnjou, Chianina, Limousin and several club calf auctions.
In the fall of 2011, Jaecke and his partner and longtime friend, Kyla Neshiem Copeland, created Focus Marketing Group, a company designed to offer a complete set of services for every livestock producer's marketing needs. Specializing in photography, videography, advertising layout and design, web design and catalog design. Focus Marketing Group is the result of a life long passion for marketing livestock for Jaecke. The Focus Marketing team is committed to help all producers from the small cow/calf producer marketing his 15 head club calf sale on the internet to the large 2500 head purebred operation, needing pictures, videos, advertising and a sale catalog for their production sale. Jaecke’s passion for marketing livestock goes further than just marketing the cattle; it has allowed him to form some of the greatest relationships and friendships with the greatest people in the

world. He considers his clients not only friends, but family. “If you don’t love what you do, or the people you work with or for, life can be pretty miserable. I wake up everyday, loving the people and the work I am blessed to get to do and have done my entire life,” said Jaecke. One other great passion of Jaecke’s life is working with the youth throughout the U.S. within the livestock industry. Over the past few years Jaecke has donated his services in announcing several Junior National heifer shows each summer. Currently he announces the Shorthorn, Maine-Anjou, Chianina and Simmental National Junior Shows. It’s his way of giving back to an industry that has given him a way of life and created so many relationships and opportunities. Jaecke commented, ”The only way we will have a tomorrow in the
livestock industry is to plant the seeds in today's young cattlemen.” Everytime there is an opportunity to help with a benefit auction, or any other fund raiser to raise money for any youth project, Jaecke is the first one to buy a raffle ticket, a pie, cake or any other item that they are selling to aid in the cause. Last summer Jaecke and his son Brooks attended and participated in six national junior shows.
>>>>>
By the way, Jaecke was fortunate to meet his birth mother in January of 2007, 45 years after his birth. “It’s funny how your life could have been totally different. I think back about all the experiences and people that have entered and crossed my life that I would have never met, or the passion for animal agriculture that I have found, if I hadn’t had the tremendous fortune of being adopted into the family that I was.” Jaecke said. “To think how different my life had been growing up on the south side of Chicago, far removed from agriculture and the livestock industry. I feel so blessed to have the life I have, and to share it with the many people that have touched my life. I only hope I can give back to the industry that has made my life so fulfilled and complete.” Jaecke continued,”The only love I have greater than my life in the livestock industry is my children and being their father. I hope Brooks and Morgan find their passion as I have found mine in this great livestock marketing industry.” ▪

This issue we reflect on another great year of livestock shows by featuring the champions of 2013, as well as some of our favorite features, ads, and faces and places!
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 157
A LOOK BACK AT THE BEST OF 2013 This past year was another big year for The Showtimes Magazine. Not only did we continue to grow in size, but we covered more shows and more exhibitors. We traveled to new shows such as the Western Bonanza in California and attended Hereford Junior Nationals in Kansas City. We had booths/displays at shows across the country that we always hit including the American Royal, NAILE, Badger Kick-Off Classic, National Western, Green and Gold Showdown, Maine and Chi Junior Nationals, Shorthorn Junior Nationals, Angus Junior Nationals, Colorado State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben! All in all, we had a great time traveling and covering youth livestock shows!
Last year we introduced Steers of the Year and Heifers of the Year, showcasing five of the national champions. This year,
RED: STATES WE TRAVELED TO THIS YEAR!
158 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
we decided to take it a step further by printing every champion steer and heifer that was printed in The Showtimes! It is the only place you can view all of the champions side-by-side! We then let everyone on Facebook decide who their favorite steer or heifer was from this past year. You can find out who you chose as Steer and Heifer of the Year on the following pages! Just like in high school, we are excited to bring you The Showtimes Magazine's Yearbook! We reflect on where we traveled, features printed, faces and places, a few of our favorite ads, booths, new hall of fame members, covers and the champion steers, heifers, hogs, lambs, and goats from this past year! We hope you enjoy reading this special year end feature and taking a look back at 2013!

inspirational story
ADRIANNA'S STEER FOR THE CAUSE In the September / October issue of your magazine you asked for inspirational stories of youth showing livestock. The story I’m about to share I believe is one that should be shared with livestock community. BY DAVID NOVELO, CA
A
drianna Novelo has been involved with agriculture for a majority of her life and is by far her love. She is heavily involved with 4H and FFA all the while keeping a 3.8 GPA. She has shown various animals over the years including rabbits, poultry, cutting horses and Angus cattle but she is most notably known for her love affair with her Angus cattle that she has shown throughout the west coast. In March of this year she was involved in a major car accident that by all accounts should have taken her life. She was the passenger in the front right seat of the vehicle traveling to her school to meet up with some friends. En-route the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into an oak tree that severed the car in half from the dash board foreword. This impact caused the car to spin an unknown amount of times with such force that Adrianna was ejected from the vehicle and thrown 75+ feet from where the rear of the vehicle came to rest. She was wearing her seatbelt that subsequently was severed or malfunctioned at the first impact. The rear of the car impacted another mature oak tree and subsequently toppled it. The first responders called the scene devastating and actually called it a multiple fatality accident upon
176 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
seeing the carnage. The debris field was over 200 feet long. Luckily all three passengers survived but had critical injuries where they had to be life flighted via helicopter to regional class 1 trauma centers. Beyond losing her leg, which was the most traumatic injury, she also suffered a broken lower back, severed hamstring, double impact moderate / sever TBI Traumatic Brain Injury, and a herniated disk in her neck resulting in a some minor disruptions in her spinal column. The pain she lives with every day is the type of pain that would cripple most of us, yet somehow through the pain, she musters through her days with little to no complaints. From there she spent a month in ICU and another month in the hospital. She basically finished her Junior year in the hospital. The doctors said that her injuries were so severe that she wouldn’t be able to walk for years to come. Her goal the entire time she was in the hospital was to just be able to go home and see her animals. She was released to go home in early June, just two weeks before our county fair. Against doctor’s orders, she spent as much time as she could with her animals mostly from a mobile bed and or a special wheel chair. Two days before the fair she was fit with a temporary prosthetic leg so she could begin rehab and learn how to walk again. What the doctor’s didn’t know was what her plans were.
We ended up taking her to the fair just so she could be with her friends and see them showing her animals for her. What we didn’t expect is what transpired. As showmanship was about to begin, she stood up and took the halter from her friend and proceed to walk in the ring with her Angus heifer. She ended up walking out of the ring with a new buckle, being named champion showman. The icing on the cake was that because she was wearing loose fitting jeans and the judge was from out of area, he had no idea of who she was let alone of her injuries. She had earned it on her own merit and the crowd gave her a standing ovation for her determination. From there the gloves were off, over the course of the next few days she would show every one of her animals and took home Champion Showman, Champion female, Champion Cow / Calf and Supreme Female. She then decided that if she could do this she would do the California State Fair and she did, winning champion Angus Cow / Calf and Reserve Supreme Cow / Calf overall. Now she has her sights set on the Junior Grand National show in San Francisco and the National Western Stock Show in Denver. All the while she was showing she never lost sight of who she was and who had helped her achieve these great feats.

You see, none of these feats would have been possible without the help of the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. They had accepted her in mid-May and were responsible for a portion of her rehab and making her mobile. She spent 4 to 5 days a week 8 to 10 hours a day there working with the doctors as an outpatient instead of an inpatient as her Kaiser doctors wanted. This allowed her to be home with her animals, which is what we believe helped her
I have had the pleasure of working with Adriana as a student, a livestock exhibitor, and an Agriculture Leadership student for the past four years. Adriana is the bravest, determined, and inspiring young person I have ever met. When faced with adversity that many individuals would be unable to bear, Adrianna took the challenge head on and came out the other side stronger and more resilient than ever. Adrianna has been breeding and showing cattle across the nation for many years. She has always invested the time and effort needed to take the next step with her project and learn and achieve more each year. She has developed an impressive heard which has earned noteworthy awards at the California State Fair. Such an honor stands alone as a great accomplishment, but what sets Adrianna apart from her peers is the prognosis she received a few months prior that she would not be physically able to walk in an arena for years to come.
come back as quickly as she did. Shriner’s worked with her to get her back to what she loved most and she didn’t forget it. Subsequently, she decided to give back the only way she knew, through Ag, she decided to raise a steer for them and auction it off in June with all proceeds going to the hospital. As the plan progressed it’s evolved and now has a name, Steer For The Cause. The goal is to raise various steers over the next few years with all proceeds from
In the winter of last year Adrianna was in a life altering automobile accident resulting in the amputee of her leg that nearly took her life. Just hours after the procedure when I visited her in the hospital although she could hardly speak, she was more concerned about who was caring for her “cows” than her physical condition. Even in those early hours when doctors had told her family that showing cattle would be nearly impossible, Adrianna would only talk about how she would invent a show stick that doubled as a crutch and how nothing was going to stop her from showing at the fair. Through hard work on the part of Adrianna, her family, her doctors, and the fair staff, Adrianna was able to show her cattle at fair just one week after getting her first prosthetic leg. This determined young girl made certain she would reach this goal by practicing with each of her six animals at home prior to the show while on crutches even against doctor’s orders. She exhibited her stock like a true champion and
178 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
came away with many breeding champion titles. While at fair she had to be told to take a break and to stop fitting her animals and cleaning her stall to reduce swelling. Showing cattle is her passion and Adrianna proved through her actions this past year that she will let nothing stand in her way of achieving that goal. In and out of the show ring Adrianna is always very positive and is highly admired by her peers. She has volunteered at local animal shelters and has taken courses in the Agriculture department to strengthen her knowledge of Animal Science. Adrianna is an exceptional young woman who is worthy of much admiration. She has made a lasting positive impact on my life and I am sure she will continue to do the same for others. ▪ If you have an inspirational story that you would like to share in a future issue of The Showtimes, please email Lisa Reid at lisa_ theshowtimes@yahoo.com.
the sale going towards different charities, such as Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and other charities that support children, leadership and community. As a part of this effort she’s reached out to our local Ag community with her plan and they have responded in ways we never thought possible. The Verozza Ranch of Shingle Springs generously donated this years steer and both Associated Feed and ShowRite feed companies have donated all of the feed for the entire year. The list of companies stepping foreword and supporting her cause has just been overwhelming. ▪

Life is filled with choices... BY BRAD HENDERSON, CO
“For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it and do it? But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, and His statutes, and His judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply; and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.” – Deuteronomy 30:11-16
L
ife is filled with choices. Each choice is like a fork in the road that leads in two different directions. And once you’ve made that decision and started down the path it’s very hard to turn things around and get back to the decision that started it. It’s real easy to think we are in control of our own lives. But I can look you right in the eye, and tell you with total certainty, that God has always been in control of this guy’s life. He lets me make the
decisions, but like a good horse trainer, He knows the direction He wants me to go and will bring things into my life to turn me back to the path He has for me. And no matter how far I get, He is always there with me, waiting for me to give him back the reins and follow his commands. The verse above has always been very important to me. Our current culture tries to convince you there is no black and white decisions…. everything is grey. From our public education system to the mass media that surrounds us, we are all under a constant barrage of preachers telling us there is no right and wrong. They teach- if it feels good do it. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 181
Let’s go back to that fork in the road analogy above- how many really bad decisions have you made that felt good at the time? Pretty much all of mine started that way. And yet, the popular culture around you has to convince you everything is grey because if there is absolute Truth (right and wrong, good and evil, light and darkness) then there is Someone that decided what is right and what is wrong and we are all accountable to Him for our decisions and what we do. If they can convince you there is no Lawgiver that is separate from this universe, then they can dictate what you are supposed to do and just a quick glance through history shows what happens when a human or group of humans, controls society and decides what is best for everyone. To date, it’s always ended in bondage and terror. This world operates within a set of rules and they always apply. Like Gravity- You drop a rock…it falls at a perfectly predictable rate every time you test it. No matter how good it would make you feel to fly, if you go climb on top of that barn and jump, you will always fall. Along with all the physical laws that govern His universe, God made a set of life rules that man is
BIBLE verses
supposed to live by. If we follow them, everything goes well. If we break them, and we’re real good at that, things fall apart. The effect of breaking His rules usually isn’t instantly apparent but over time those decisions start to eat away at your life and impact the lives of those around you. God gave us rules because He loves us and wants the best for us. And as it says in the verses above, He didn’t hide them from us or make them so hard to understand that we need someone to tell us what it means. He wrote each of us a love letter. It starts in Genesis and ends in Revelation…the Holy Bible. Along with Him not hiding it from us, He didn’t make His rules hard to follow, especially when you look at them as what filters good from evil. Have you read God’s Word today? Do you feel like you need direction in your life and don’t know where to turn? Whenever I feel that way I know why—It’s been too long since I listened to Him. As Christ said, “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God,” we need to fill up our tanks on God’s Word and then share with those around us that are starving for the Truth. ▪

CATTLE COMPANY
THURSDAY
First off, Scheetz Cattle Company would like to say “thank you” to our customers near
and far for your tremendous acceptance of our program. We are humbled by your incredible support. After much debate, we have decided to make the transition to a fallcalving program. So, we are selling our entire inventory of club calf spring-calving pregnant recips—approximately 100 head.
Thursday, December 5, 2013
www.cwcattlesales.com
To our knowledge, this sale is unprecedented—and especially considering that our spring-born September 2013 bid-off sale averaged just short of $8,000 per head! The opportunity to buy these same proven genetic matings in this volume is without parallel. In a relatively short time span, we have produced show ring champions on every level. The reports from our calf and embryo sales have been especially gratifying, and we are thankful that our customers have shared in our success. Now, it’s your turn!
All recipient cows will be ultrasounded and sex of each pregnancy will be determined. All donor dams are being retained for our fall-calving program. 186

TWO POWERFUL BRANDS
COMBINED AS ONE. 192 THE SHOWTIMES NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013
Since we started feeding Showmaster® and now Sunglo®, we feel that Winegardner Show Cattle have been able to go to the next level. There are many advantages to the feed. For one, the freshness and consistency bag after bag is second to none. No matter which type of feeding stage you’re in, you can always count on it being the highest quality every time. From babies to big cattle it has allowed us to raise the bar not only selling them, but also our customers success no matter which level of competition they are at. - Tyler Winegardner, Winegardner Show Cattle
We have been very happy since we began working with Showmaster® and now Sunglo®. They have went above and beyond to meet our needs and create a product that works for our operation. The quality of feed that Showmaster® delivers is exceptional and our steers appear to have a fuller look. The Grand Champion Steer at the 2013 Iowa State Fair was on Showmaster®. We have confidence as these two brands, Showmaster® and Sunglo®, come together that we will continue to have the same results as we have had in the past. We look forward to the advantages these Sunglo® supplements will bring to our operation. - Wade Rodgers, Rodgers Cattle Company
