NEW SHOW ANIMAL CUTOUTS
Since we announced our cutouts this past September, they have taken off with orders placed from around the country! We can make steer, heifer, hog, lamb and goat signs any color and with your brand, logo or school name! They are made on luster board (wood in the middle with aluminum sides) and come in two sizes. The large signs are approx. 48” long x 36” tall (steer sign) and are $300 plus $50 shipping. Our small signs are approx. 18” long x 12” tall (steer sign) and are $50 plus $15 shipping. FALL SHOW COVERAGE

This past Fall was filled with not only getting ready for Denver, but traveling to shows as well. In October we traveled to Kansas City for the 2015 American Royal. We covered both the market and breeding weekends. In addition to filming the shows, taking pictures and posting updates to our social media pages, we enjoyed visiting with advertisers and subscribers! We also debuted a new huge metal truss booth! Once KC wrapped up we headed home for a few days to send our Nov/Dec issue to print, and then headed to Louisville for the 2015 NAILE. Lisa had the opportunity to anounce the heifer shows at the North American for an entire day. She enjoyed being part of the rich history as well as seeing a new perspective of each show from inside the ring. We also coverered the show with photos and videos. In fact, our 2015 NAILE Supreme Heifer Drive video became our most viewed video to date with over 14,400 plays! It was a great fall covering both shows and seeing friends! Be sure to check out our coverage and Show Results from both the American Royal and the North American International Livestock Exposition in this issue!

f you have walked past the historic exchange building in the Yards during the National Western Stock Show, or have held onto a buyer’s number at the annual Western Elite Female Sale with confidence that you were going to invest in quality genetics, then your path has crossed with that of Dave Duello. Duello is the owner of Duello Cattle Company located in Pine Bluff, Wyoming. An operation dedicated to producing high quality composite
females. Over the years he has played an active role in the success of various cattle operations and collegiate livestock judging teams alike. These roles and the connections formed from them have ultimately led him to where he is today. Growing up in Eastern Iowa on a diversified farm, Duello was destined to play his part in the cattle industry. During his time at Iowa State University, he found success as a member of the 1986 National
Champion Collegiate Livestock Judging Team. His judging career highlights include being named High Individual at the American Royal in Kansas City and 2nd High Individual at the North American in Louisville. Duello’s judging coach, Chris Skaggs, became a great mentor and friend. Dave credits him as a being very instrumental in his start as a judge and cattleman, “He made a huge impact on my life. From judging to connecting me with the right people.”

After graduating in 1987, he continued his education at Iowa State to earn a Masters and PHD in Beef Cattle Genetics. In fact, his thesis led him to conduct research using ultrasound to develop the first carcass EPD’s for the Angus and Simmental Breeds. Duello’s keen eye for livestock landed him the position of coach of the Iowa State Livestock Judging Team while he was in grad school. Of the four teams he coached, two were National Champions. Before leaving, he started working with the team named National Champion that was taken over by Scott Greiner. While his time in Iowa was complete, there was no denying his path was headed towards making an impact as a part of the production side of the industry. Following his chapter in Iowa, Dave began work at Ankony Farms located in Nebraska and Georgia. He spent the next ten years managing their 3,000 head of registered Angus. “It was there at Ankony that I gained a lot of experience about promoting and marketing seed stock. The owner, Virgil Lovell, and the people around him were of great influence.” Dave stated. After Ankony, Dave was given the opportunity to manage Diamond L Ranch located in Carpenter and Pine Bluff, Wyoming. This 3,500 head cow herd, consisting of mostly composites with a few registered Angus, would soon be the start of Duello Cattle Company. Over the past nine years, Duello Cattle Company has formed a reputation of quality. In 2007, Dave was able to purchase his pick of the Diamond L cows. His goal was to make composite females – SimAngus, MaineAngus, Charolais Composites, etc. “I breed my females to be sound, practical, good milking cows that are mostly clean of any genetic producing defects. They are cows first, but have the look, power and kind to market in the show calf business.”

In January of 2010, Duello branched his operation out even more with the foundation of the Western Elite Female Sale hosted during the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The sale, which has been held annually ever since, hosts roughly 100 head of Duello and consignor’s top genetics; with around 70 being young, proven A.I. bred females. While Duello Cattle Company sells some cattle private treaty, the operation’s main marketing arm is that of the Western Elite. When asked what the future holds for Duello Cattle Company, Dave replied, “I am going to just keep trying to make them even better.” Starting from his time at Iowa State, Dave has been invited to judge all across the globe. He was 24-years-old the first time he judged the Houston Steer Show; and 22 years later he judged it for the third time. He has held the mic at several Junior Nationals, OKC eight times, Ft. Worth four times and has traveled to both Australia and New Zealand. This January, he will join Mark Hoge and

I have judged breeds but never the steer show at Denver.” I have had the pleasure of working personally with Dave over the past few years on his Western Elite sale catalog. There is no doubt the talent and eye that he has for cattle. Not only have I witnessed his overall knowledge of cattle from the offerings he puts together for the sale, it is his attention to details and way of talking and describing the cattle in person and through his footnotes that makes him a true cattleman. HOW THE 3 JUDGE SYSTEM CAN CHANGE A SHOW In 2012 the National Western Stock Show changed to a three judge system. The table above is an example of how the system can be different than just a single person judging a steer show. The steer that went on to win Grand Champion received 2nd, 1st and 1st. WESTERN BONANZA
HISTORY What began as a senior project in 1985, primarily as a beef show, has evolved into a five-ring show that is “The Best in the West”. In addition to being a completely student run show, Cal Poly’s Western Bonanza is one of the most competitive jackpot shows in the Western United States. Over 130 students help run the show. The 2016 show management team is comprised of six student managers, 30 student committee chairs, over 100 student committee members, and two advisors.

THE STORY OF A CHAMPION

OLIVIA SHARES HOW HER STEER MARIO WON KANSAS CITY.
his past October I was lucky enough to capture Grand Champion Market Steer at the 2015 American Royal with my calf Mario. I am Olivia Caldwell from Elmwood, Illinois, and I am 12 years old. This was my 2nd year showing at the American Royal, and the first year showing a steer. It will be a show that I will never forget or the journey that got me there. Each October, my dad, Todd, gets the majority of the cattle in that he is going to sell during that fall season. I am always told not to become attached to anything because all animals are for sale on the farm. However, one night I overheard Dad and Jared Boyert talking about a calf that dad had just gotten. “This one could be incredible, or so unique” were the words being said. Dad had bought the calf from Vickland Show Cattle, and he was out of a heifer that Dad had found for
Emma Vickland to show. Dad knew the genetics behind the calf and was excited to see what his future could hold. I held my breath that this might become my calf! After a few weeks, Dad said, “Liv, you can show this one at least for awhile.” I was so excited and could not wait for that first show to arrive. Even after that first set of shows, I was still worried that Dad would sell him. In December of 2015, as we headed to the Kansas Beef Expo, I knew there was a chance that someone else would be taking him home. I prayed that I could keep him, not because he was a good calf, but because he was becoming my best friend. It wasn’t until I walked out of the ring after being named Grand Champion that I knew that he was truly mine. Dad looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, “Liv, I promise I won’t sell your calf, not today, not ever.” Now I could finally relax and just have fun! We showed him until February of this year, and then it was time to leave him at home. He would remain there until we left
for Kansas City. During that time, he became more than just a show animal to our family. Some days he would run along in the pasture as my mom walked in the evenings. Or he would just come to the fence and watch me as I practiced basketball. He hated to be by himself so you would often find him trying to get thru the fence to the other cattle. Mario just had such a gentle nature about him, one that made him so easy to love. In the fall while Dad is gone with his online sales, things can get kind of hectic around the farm. We had twenty-seven pigs on feed and Mario to get ready for Kansas City. To see us running from one barn to another is not an uncommon sight. We were lucky enough to have some great kids from both Blackhawk College and Illinois Central College to help us out. Between them and my mom, everyone pitched in to get the work done. One thing showing livestock has taught me is the value of family and how working beside your parents on your project can be very rewarding. As we left for Kansas City, I tried not to let my nerves overshadow the joy of being able to show Mario again. I knew there was a chance he would not come home, but I tried not to think of that either. He had been such a fun calf to have; I just wanted to enjoy the days ahead. I was also looking forward to being able to see my aunts, my cousins, and my grandparents because they were all coming to see my siblings and me show. Having your loved ones there to support you means so much. There are still days I can’t believe that I won the American Royal. My mom asked me what I was thinking while in my class that day. I told her I hoped that when the judge looked at me, he would be holding up the 1 signal. But most of all, I just wanted to enjoy
my time with him. I love showing cattle, and I knew what this meant to our family. My grandpa Gerald looked at me after I came out of the ring and said, “ Your dad and I tried our entire lives to win something like this; I never thought I would live to see my grandchild accomplish our goal.” There are so many moments I will always treasure and am so lucky to have happened to us. One family told my grandma that they drove five hours to see Mario and me show. They had followed him all year and just wanted to see him in person. That just amazed me! I would encourage anyone who dreams of winning a major show to work hard, never give up, and thank those who help get you there. Thank you to my parents for your countless hours and your determination to see me and my siblings succeed. Thank you to Maddie and Cole for helping pick up my pig chores when I was busy in the cattle barn. Thank you to each one of you who called, sent a message, or cheered for us along the way. It has been an amazing journey, an amazing ride with an amazing calf. •

i, I am Madison Clark from Covington, Ohio, and recently I had my wildest dream fulfilled when I exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Steer at the North American International Livestock Expo. I could not think of a better way to end my showing career. My family and I have
been extremely blessed this year, from winning the Ohio State fair along with having the Reserve steer at NAILE. I have so many people I need to thank but, most importantly, I would like to thank my parents. They are my brother and I’s biggest supporters and I will never be able to repay them for all of the years of support that they have given us. They have allowed me to follow my dreams and always been there to keep pushing me to achieve my goals. Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey over the years! •

he North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Sale of Champions re-wrote the record books during a live auction that raised $110,000 on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The record-breaking $110,000 sale is an increase of 20 percent over last year’s total of $92,000. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion steers, hogs and lambs in the junior show division are sold to the highest bidder during the auction. Ten percent of the sales are donated to charitable organizations. The remaining 90 percent of the proceeds are split, with 10 percent going to promote the expo and 80 percent given to the youth exhibitors More than $1.75 million has been raised through the auction to further promote youth involvement in agribusiness and fund charitable endeavors. The 2015 North American International Livestock Exposition Sale of Champions exhibitors, purchasers and sale prices are:

Next on my dining adventures is a place that Trevor and Melisa Smith took my wife and I to; and that would be “Bubba Gumps Shrimp Co.” I know I don’t usually promote a chain restaurant, but having some pretty good seafood in Denver just has to get the nod this time. From the appetizers to the full blown menu, this joint has something for everybody when it comes to seafood. Now parking Downtown is a little bit of a challenge for a full size crew cab pickup, but I still think
You can’t go to Denver without trying to find a good Mexican food joint to partake of; and I have had ample opportunity to do just that. This time the one I’m sharing is “Mercedes Mexican Restaurant.” I know there are several locations for Mercedes, but my pick is the one on Pecos street. Yes, not everyone will agree on the best Mexican cuisine in town, but this place has some of the best green chili and chicharron burritos that I have managed to stumble across! Last, but not least by a long shot, is a hamburger joint that I frequent by the name of “Jim’s Burger Haven.” I like to go to the one in Thornton. If you haven’t noticed by now, I like to get out away from the show area and try to avoid the busier places. Jim’s is not the fanciest type of place. It’s more of an old style diner with that type of menu including some of the Denver area influence on the items like the spicy chips and the red or green chili cheese fires or Frito pies. It’s a unique place to take a group of stock show kids to for a different take on some old style hamburgers. Well folks, it’s time to gear up for the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Guess what that means…time to start planning one of the most important things to do while visiting the Mile High City; and that would be where to EAT!!! I can’t even pass through Denver without making a stop at “Cinzetti’s Italian Market Restaurant.” I usually make a couple of visits to this establishment while I’m in town for the Stock Show. My wife says I’m a creature of habit! I simply tell her good habits don’t need to be broken! The menu at Cinzetti’s is very diverse from the pastas, pizza, soups and salad to the different choices of fish and chicken with the Italian influence. Plus, the desert bar is out of this world if you manage to save room for it. I always make room for the made to order crepes!! The price is very affordable for a large group of Stock Show enthusiast and the parking is very accommodating. I’d recommend calling ahead for a large group.

MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER

HOW MORGAN MEISENHEIMER BECAME ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED, AND UNEXPECTED, LIVESTOCK PHOTOGRAPHERS IN THE GAME. BY Jessica Willingham
ike everyone else, I remember the first time I met Morgan Meisenheimer. Her loud, low and raspy voice carried through the halls of Oklahoma State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), where we both studied Agricultural Communications. She was unmistakable, because she was unlike anyone else. When every cowgirl was teasing her hair to high heaven, Morgan wore hers in carefree curls. When everyone wore boots, she wore Birkenstocks. She’s more Janis Joplin than June Carter,
and it’s her free-spirited creativity paired with the wicked determination of the west that makes her one of the most sought-after livestock photographers in the industry. Today, Morgan is a livestock photographer for purebred and show-stock producers across the country. In 2015, she travelled to more than 20 states and directed nearly 100 livestock photography shoots for standout clients like Carter Airhart Cattle Company, Perry Show Cattle, and various sales managed by Jered Shipman and Graham Blagg. Her blend of artistic expertise and agricultural knowledge results in powerful imagery and irresistible sales that help skyrocket her clients’ business.
The Very Beginning Morgan grew up in Mount Airy, Maryland on her grandfather’s 160-acre dream, Brandston Farm. But she’s far from your typical cowgirl. Her childhood home was filled with every eccentricity — from talking parrots to painted portraits. It was that blend of art and agriculture growing up that set the foundation for where she is today. “When you walk into Morgan’s front door, it’s a blast of color. Art is everywhere. Morgan is art,” said Garrett Knebel, owner of Harmony Hill Cattle and a longtime client and friend. “You don’t find people like that within the livestock industry. She thinks differently. She loves art just as much as she loves livestock, and that to me is what separates her from other people.”
While Meisenheimer had a hard time remembering the rules during the first competition — like writing anything down, for instance — she easily recalled to Mullinix every animal she evaluated across nine classes and five hours. She was a prodigy in pigtails, with a brilliant memory and sharp eye for evaluation. “I knew I had someone special to work with,” he said. With the help of Mullinix and other mentors, Meisenheimer developed a unique expertise in animal evaluation. She became a member of Maryland’s 2009 National Champion 4-H Dairy Judging Team and won numerous dairy-judging awards, including 3rd Overall and High Individual in Oral Reasons at 2009 World Dairy Expo. She was a member of the Reserve Champion Team at the 2010 Royal Highland Contest in Scotland, and went on to judge underneath Mullinix at Butler

“I learned quickly that she was talented beyond her years,” Mullinix said. “She saw and evaluated things no other 8-year-olds could, and she was better than some of my collegiate-level students.”

Like most rural kids, Meisenheimer started exploring her interests through local 4-H programs. At 8-years-old, she attended her first livestock-judging contest. Chris Mullinix, native of Maryland and current professor of Animal Sciences at Kansas State University and head coach of the Kansas State University Livestock Judging Team, became Meisenheimer’s mentor when he was still a livestock judging coach at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.

Community College, where she became a member of a two-time National Champion Livestock Judging Team. She held the National Junior College Livestock Judging All-American title before coming to judge at Oklahoma State University in 2011. During her time at OSU she went on to be an All-American (again) and was high Individual at the American Royal 2012. She became the first female to win reasons at both the Royal and Louisville competitions. (And a member of the National Champion Team) “My background isn’t traditional. I’m from a small state and a relatively unknown family,” Meisenheimer said. “My family loved to farm and show cattle, but also had a strong appreciation for art. Because of that, I had a lot of opportunity to garner a unique perspective.” “My Gramp and Mom did their best to give me everything in the world, and encouraged my interest in livestock,” she said. “Without them, I never would have pursued this.” Meisenheimer earned dozens of scholarships, including
the first La Prix scholarship via Embryos on Snow – a $10,000 scholarship that funded her first 70-200mm 2.8 lens. By the time she arrived at OSU to finish her final two years, she was easily one of the most seasoned livestock evaluators of OSU CASNR’s 2013 graduating class. The Good Ones As OSU’s graduation loomed near, the agricultural communications class was scrambling to put the final touches on graduate portfolios. While I didn’t know her personally during the college years, I knew Meisenheimer was up to something different. Her inclass questions were few and far between, but when she spoke it was with commanding confidence and piercing perception. While we were all fumbling around in the minor leagues of writing, designing, and capturing images, Meisenheimer was swinging for the fences in the majors. She had found the one place where art and agriculture came together perfectly — photography and design for livestock producers— and was already taking professional freelance clients. She was inspired to elevate the industry (and producer’s bottom lines) through
beautiful, powerful, and honest branding. She wanted to run a business.
my eyes were wide with fear, Meisenheimer is always calm. She explained that her process is pretty distinctive.
“I had this wild hair that I wanted to make it on my own,” said Meisenheimer. “My personality type has always been so fiercely independent. I knew I just needed to work for myself; I always knew that and never really questioned it. At first I was doing a little of everything, and taking anything I could get: cattle photos, design, logos even cohesive branding. This last fall, I became more specialized as a livestock photographer.”
“I’m a very patient person around animals,” she said. “I try my best to coach my help through it and keep the atmosphere light. I’m critical about how cattle are set up, how their weight is distributed, how high their head is… That stems directly from my eye for livestock and how I read their skeleton. I have a vision for how we’re going to minimize their flaws and accentuate where they are good. By seeing problems with every single animal specifically, we do slightly different poses every time.”
Today, Meisenheimer owns her self-titled business. In only her second year of business, she’s generated six figures and paved her way to a successful career. She brings with her not only talent, but also exceptional poise. It makes all the difference in both the producer experience and the end product of picture day.

“Morgan understands how important integrity is to not only the seller and buyer, but also the future of the industry,” said Mullinix. “She does her job right, so never has to do what too many other livestock photographers are doing: Photoshop an animal.” Meisenheimer also takes special scheduling consideration for each of her clients, ensuring every animal is given the time needed to nail the shot. While many photographers schedule 20-30 head a day, Meisenheimer grants her clients multiple days with no more than 15 head lined up for a single session. Patience, she said, is most profitable. Mullinix agrees. “The difference maker is that this is a young lady who knows what’s on the other side of that lens.” Blazing Forward Meisenheimer looks forward to expanding her business in the future, and further integrating her knowledge and experiences to brand livestock producers.
In the meantime, she’s burning rubber on every major highway from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Denver, Colorado and every sale and ranch in-between. You can find her and her constant companion, a blue heeler named Jersey, together and supporting producers, both online and off, and growing the business. It’s been a long road, and at times a bumpy one, but Meisenheimer’s unwavering determination has never been stronger. “She grew up in a part of the country that’s not necessarily a livestock hub,” said Mullinix. “She came from humble beginnings and was given access to a whole world she never knew was out there. She took advantage of that opportunity. No one has her kind of mind, or the ability to tie art and visualization to the livestock arena like she does. It’s been a pretty cool thing to watch.” •

While technology has changed, she believes the power of an honest brand is as seared into the livestock and agricultural industry today as it was two hundred years ago.
“What I am most passionate about is doing cohesive branding — in ten years, I would love to have ten clients where I am responsible for their entire visual brand,” she said. “I love doing artistic work and offering that to my clients. I currently do some design work and general campaign development on the side. I hope to expand that in the future.”

BRANDON SHARES ONE OF THE PROUDEST MOMENTS OF HIS LIFE.
y dad always tells me, “If you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.” I never understood what that meant until I found myself submerged in the livestock industry. Growing up, there isn’t a time in my life where I can’t remember being around livestock, my family history on both sides has been involved in beef cattle and auction yards so being able to evaluate livestock was always something that felt very natural. I am a fourth generation of Californians involved in the agriculture industry and feel proud to continue on the tradition. Starting at a young age, I would go to the sale barn with my dad and check cows and loved every second of being around animals. Like most kids I played a lot of sports but still showed in 4-H and there came a time
where I had to make the decision between sports and livestock and thankfully I chose to develop my livestock skills better and decided to join the livestock judging team in high school. I started competitively judging my junior year in high school and had some great coaches push me to always become better. Valerie VonAllman and Becky Bigelow-Mendonza always told me I could do great things if I put my mind to it and it was then that I decided I needed to continue my Livestock Judging career at the collegiate level. From Buhach Colony High School, I decided to continue my judging career with Amanda Schnoor at Modesto Junior College I wanted to stay close so that I could help some families with their hogs as well as continue building our club calf operation at home. Schnoor helped me become better-rounded as a livestock evaluator both ringside and in the reasons room. I decided the most beneficial move I could make would be to judge at a college that was submerged around good livestock. I started talking to different colleges in the Midwest and after visiting a

few colleges decided that Kansas State University would be a great fit for me to continue to grow and develop as a livestock judge. For me, choosing Kansas State was an easier decision because I had seen past teams and knew that having help from both Scott Schaake and Chris Mullinix would lead me to success. Schaake had built a great name for Kansas State University over the years and having Mullinix’s past success at Butler, I knew Kansas State would be a competitive team. Mullinix saw my potential quickly headed me in the right direction. He put in countless hours taking the team to view livestock and helped us in the reasons room. The help didn’t stop with just Mullinix, our team was very fortunate to have two past judging team members to help to our success. Brady Jensen and Spencer Scotten helped me better understand what it looked like to be a more successful livestock judge. They both put in just as much time as our team in helping us prepare for contests and were also some of our biggest supporters along the way. Going into the American Royal, the team and I felt comfortable. We knew we had put in the time and were ready to bring home the win for not only ourselves but also for Kansas State. Being announced as the High Individual was one of the proudest moments in my life. It was the reassurance I wanted and knew I could achieve in my collegiate year of judging. For my team to also be announced as the High Team was a great achievement for all of us. We
were seven guys who not only grew as a team but became great friends. We knew each other’s strengths and weakness and so for us to be named high team together was our team’s greatest success. I know that each one of my team members will have great success in their careers as livestock evaluators and wish them success in everything that they do. This win wouldn’t have happened without the support of my family and friends back home. I would like to thank my parents Martin and Stacey Machado as well as my sister Brittney for always being my biggest fans and for always supporting me along this crazy journey. Along with them the rest of my family have always been there to support me and show their interest in what my passions have been. I would like to thank Valarie Von Allman and Becky BigelowMendonza for starting me on the right foot in high school. A big thank you goes to Amanda Schnoor, you believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself and for pushing me towards the right direction in my collegiate career. Finally to the three most influential people in my livestock evaluating career Chris Mullinix, Brady Jensen and Spencer Scotten. Thank you for opening my eyes to new methods and for pushing me harder than I thought I could go. You helped shape my life in ways I didn’t know needed help and I am thankful to have such influential livestock evaluators and friends in you. Thank you to all who have believed in me and I feel honored to be named the High Individual at the American Royal. •

Coach Ryan Page has continued to build on the foundation that was established prior to his arrival. While doing so, the institution has created a culture that is synonymous with excellence and conducive to student development. The team’s current wins and accolades are a testament to the types of students that enroll at FSCC and the opportunities they have for success while attending. A few recent successes include being named the Champion Team at both the American Royal (Kansas City) and the North American International Livestock
Exposition (Louisville). The team also picked up two other wins earlier in the fall at the Flint Hills Classic and the Mid-America Classic. This year’s team has certainly represented the institution well, but it’s not the only time the department has been recognized at national competitions. Just two years prior, the FSCC livestock team set a record at NAILE and the school is also home to one of the nation’s top Meats Judging programs. The Meats program generated the champion team at the 2015 National Western and was the 2015 Reserve National Champions.

ALL AMERICAN RECOGNITION LOUISVILLE, KY (November 17, 2015) - The All-American Livestock Judging Awards were presented at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY on Nov. 17. Marking its 16th year, the program was initiated by the University Livestock Judging Team Coaches’ Association in 2000. The All American program recognizes students who make a personal commitment to livestock judging and excel in academics, university and industry activities and community service. This year’s eleven honorees represent eight universities and the average GPA of the recipients is 3.83.The recipients are from Iowa State University, University of Arkansas, University of Missouri, Oklahoma State University, University of Illinois, Clemson University, Colorado State University and West Texas A & M University. Below is the individual listing of the All-American Team: Bailey Core is from Iowa State University. Her university involvement includes Creator of the Department of Animal Science Newsletter, Cochair of the ISU Agricultural Communications Club and member of Block and Bridle club and National Agri-Marketing Association. She has served as President of the National Junior Maine Anjou Association and the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Council. Bailey was high individual overall at the NACTA contest last spring and was also a member of the ISU Meat Animal Evaluation team. She plans to continue her education with a Masters in Agricultural Communication and eventually pursue a marketing/communications position in the livestock industry. Elizabeth Heaton is also from Iowa State University. Elizabeth has served as Advisor and is a member of the American Angus, Chianina, Charo-
lais, Shorthorn and Simmental Associations. At Iowa State, she has been a member of Block and Bridle and Agricultural Business clubs. She was a member of Illinois State 4-H Livestock Judging Team and was second high individual overall at the National 4-H contest. This past summer she served on an internship with River Valley Coop in Illinois analyzing field weed, insect and disease pressures. She plans to attend Drake University Law School and eventually engage in domestic and international agricultural policy. Morgan Marley is from the University of Arkansas. She is Vice President of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, Reporter of Block and Bridle and Director of Public Relations for Collegiate Farm Bureau. Morgan is also an Experiential Learning Lab Graphic Designer and Videographer for the Agricultural Education, Communications and Technology Department. She was a Human Resources Intern with the Lansing Trade Group in Overland Park, KS this past summer where she coordinated a recruitment video, developed a campus ambassador program and designed a new employee newsletter. She was a member of the Champion Team at the Dixie National and Reserve Champion Team at the Arizona National. Morgan was also named a Junior College All American for livestock judging at NEO. After graduating with an agricultural communications degree and a minor in Animal Science, Morgan plans to attend graduate school in agricultural communications and pursue a career in communications within the livestock industry. Miriam Martin is from the University of Missouri. Miriam has held chairman positions with the University of Missouri Block and Bridle Steer, Heifer and Swine shows. She is a Litton Leaders Scholar and was selected Outstanding Freshman in the College in 2014. She is also a youth ambassa-
dor for the Missouri Farm Bureau and Missouri Pork Association. She works in the MU Meat Science laboratory and conducted an undergraduate research project in meat science funded by Elanco and Pork Checkoff. She held a Merck Animal Health Swine Marketing Internship this past summer and a JBS/Pilgrim’s Pride Marketing and Product Management Internship in the summer of 2014. She has participated on both the meats and livestock judging teams at MU. Miriam plans to attend graduate school in Agribusiness emphasizing International Agriculture with ultimate career objective of connecting the people we feed with the science that makes it possible. Elizabeth Nixon is from Oklahoma State. She was a member of the National Champion Meat Animal Evaluation team this past year and was sixth high individual overall in the contest. She is a member of the Block and Bridle club and Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow at OSU. She has participated in internships with Alliance Group Public Relations, Zoetis Genetics Sales and the Virginia Beef Industry Council. She has been active in both the Virginia and National Junior Angus Associations. She attended Butler Community college where she was an Agriculture Ambassador, Order of the Purple and Phi Theta Kappa. She was also a Junior College All American at Butler and a 4-H All American at the North American International contest. Elizabeth plans to pursue a communications career specifically as an advocate for the livestock industry in an organization like the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Shelby Peterson is from the University of Illinois. She has served as an Ambassador for College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences and was selected for the 2015 International Business Immersion Program to Greece, Belgium and
the Netherlands. She is a member of Agribusiness Club and the Hoof and Horn Club where she serves as Showdown Chair for the Spring Steer and Heifer shows. She was raised on a 400-head family-owned cow-calf operation in Western Illinois and is a lifetime member of the American Angus Association. She was an intern for the career fair under the Director of Career Services for the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. She is pursuing a degree in Agricultural Finance with a minor in Animal Science and following graduation would like to work for Farm Credit Association in the credit and lending division. She has taken the first step toward her goal by serving as an intern with Farm Credit Illinois this past summer.
Matthew Walta is from Oklahoma State University. Matthew has been on the President’s Honor Roll every semester at both Redlands College and OSU. He is a member of Block and Bridle, American Angus Association, Oklahoma Wheat Commission, and Mid-States Wool Growers Association. Matthew received the American Farmer Degree for his diversified operation consisting of cattle, sheep and wheat. He was a member of the National Champion Meat Animal Evaluation team at Oklahoma State,
Bailee Wright is from West Texas A&M University. Bailee serves as Vice President of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, Recruitment Chairman of Agricultural Ambassadors, Facilitator of Leadership Workshops with the National Society of Leadership/Success and a Representative on the West Texas A&M President’s Council. She worked as a Marketing Associate with The Cattle Range in Amarillo, TX, a show office intern with Rodeo Austin and a summer intern with Texas Pork Producers in Austin, TX where she coordinated the Texas Pork Leadership Camp and Texas Pork Youth Symposium. She was high individual overall at the Texas State FFA Contest and received gold emblem honors for the livestock evaluation CDE at the National FFA contest. After receiving a degree in Agricultural Media and Communications, she plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Leadership and Ethics. Her short term goal is to work as a Media and Communications Representative for a state or national livestock organization and her long term goal is to work for a major livestock show as a Youth and Competitive Events Director. The All American Team judges are current or former administrators from across the country and include Dr. Mark McCann, University of Georgia; Dr. Jim Heird, Texas A&M University, Dr. Kevin Pond, Colorado State University; Dr. James Kinder, The Ohio State University and Dr. Maynard Hogberg, Iowa State University. Kyndal Reitzenstein is from Oklahoma State University. She is active in the Block and Bridle and Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow at OSU. Kyndal has held internships with Yearous Cattle Company, Showtimes magazine, and Frontier Genetics. She was a Junior College
Emma Vickland is from Colorado State University. Emma is Public Relations Officer for the Block and Bridle club, and a member of Tau Sigma, Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Alpha Lambda honor societies. She was very active in the American Junior Chianina Association as a National director and served as Vice President of the Colorado Junior Hereford Association. She is also a member of the National Junior Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Maine Anjou and Simmental Associations. Emma was High Individual Overall at the National Western and finished in the top 10 overall at the Iowa Beef Expo, San Antonio and Houston judging contests. She received All American honors in livestock judging in Junior College with Redlands College and was also a member of a National Champion 4-H team in 2012. Emma plans to receive a doctorate in Physical Therapy specializing in treatment of neuromuscular dysfunction in large animals.

Jessica Plunkard is from Clemson University. Jessica is a Student Ambassador for the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, President of the Clemson University Academic Team, Vice President of Circle K, Treasurer of the PreVet Club and a member of the Clemson University Calhoun Honors College. She served on internships with veterinary clinics in Asheville, NC and Dickerson, MD during the past two summers. She also participated in an international veterinary program to Guatemala in 2015. Jessica finished in the top ten overall in the All East Judging contest as a member of the Reserve Champion team. She plans to pursue a joint DVM/PhD program in Veterinary medicine to become a food animal focused researcher.

Kyndal has continued her judging success finishing among the high individuals overall at the National Western, Arizona National, Iowa Beef Expo, Houston Livestock Show and most recently at the American Royal. Kyndal plans to continue her involvement in the beef cattle industry following graduation in either ruminant nutrition or marketing.

CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP ACTIVE: 10 MINUTES | TOTAL: 30 MINUTES | SERVES: 10 BY LISA BEAUPREZ, CO JAN/FEB 2016
Ingredients: ½ onion 3 tbsp. of butter 2 tbsp. of flour 1 clove garlic 1 store bought rotisserie chicken (skinned and shredded) or 4 chicken breast cooked 3 14 oz. cans of chicken broth 1 14 oz. can of cream of chicken soup 4 c. half & half 1 c. salsa 1 15 oz. can of corn (drained) 1 15 oz. can of black beans (drained) 1 15 oz. can of kidney beans (drained) 2 tsp. cumin 1 packet of fajita seasoning Tortilla chips Cheese
Serve in bowls and top with tortilla chips and cheese.

Directions: Melt butter in large stockpot. Add onion and garlic. Sauté until soft. Add flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add broth, half and half, cream of chicken soup, corn, beans, cumin, fajita seasoning, and salsa. Stir until mixed well. Add shredded chicken. Cook on low heat for 20 mins.

Passion is evident when someone makes all attempts possible to infilitrate themselves into all facets of their interests. The Jensen Family has done just that in regards to the Hereford breed and livestock industry as a whole. Kevin and Sheila Jensen, along with their three children, Brady, Brooke and Ben, have made an instrumental mark on agriculture through their involvement as showmen, producers, and members of the American Hereford Association.

In addition to their cattle ranch, Jensen Bros., located in Courtland, Kansas, the Jensen’s can be found behind the reigns of both 2013 Best of the Barns award winner Jensen Livestock Agency and Jensen Genetic Center.

Kevin and Sheila Jensen have judged all across the country. Their oldest son, Brady, is quickly following in his parents footsteps having been a member of the All American Juding Team while a member of the Kansas State University and previously Butler Community College Livestock Judging Teams. All three Jensen children have not only been successful within the Hereford breed, they have used their love for the association to give back. Both Brady and Brooke served on the National Junior Hereford Association Board of Directors, with Brady holding the title of 2014-2015 Board Chairman. Prior to her board position, Brooke had the honor of representing the Hereford breed as their 2013-2014 National Queen. Don’t just take our word for the huge contribution the Jensen Family is to our way of life. American Hereford Association Executive Vice President, Jack Ward, and Director of Youth Activities, Amy Cowan, share how Kevin, Sheila, Brady, Brooke and Ben have been an industry asset.
JACK WARD AHA EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Loyal, enthusiastic, dedicated, competitive, hard working and deep rooted in the livestock industry are all words that describe the Jensen family. Kevin, Sheila, Brady, Brooke and Ben have a family pedigree that is built by generations of great minds and visionaries for the beef cattle industry, and Kevin and Sheila have been able to keep their family active in all parts of the industry. It starts at the ranch where this family’s operation is home to one of the strongest set of Hereford cows that are capable of producing a national champion, but more importantly, are focused on economically relevant traits that will make their commercial customers profitable. From a genetics standpoint, the Jensen family keeps an eye on details and uses all tools available to make breeding decisions including EPD, genomics and type to produce cattle that work for their customers. They are clear thinkers and keep a balanced approach to their selections. Kevin and Sheila have both served as judges across the US and internationally and it is exciting to see Brady following in the footsteps as one of the exciting young judges. This family is dedicated to junior programs and they have certainly been loyal to the Hereford breed. Brady has served as a past chairman of the National Junior Hereford board of directors and Brooke is currently serving as on the board. Kevin and Sheila have been huge supporters of the program as they have seen the benefits it has given their children and this year, they along with Dylan and Chelsea Evans will donate the Hereford Youth of America Foundation heifer that will be sold in the Mile High Sale, Denver, to help support Hereford youth and events for years to come. Kevin and his family are friends and I consider them great assets to the industry. They collectively have been great spokesmen, mentors and leaders to all parts of agriculture and youth programs.

One thing that sticks out in my mind when talking about the Jensen family is just that, they are a close knit family. Their family has accomplished so much by working together as team. The Jensen family takes a great deal of PRIDE in everything they do. It was so neat last summer to watch Brady step down from the podium after his retiring remarks on the NJHA board and walk out into the audience to hand off his maroon jacket to his little sister and congratulate her on being elected to the board. Already, in Brooke’s short tenure on the NJHA board

I have so enjoyed working with the Jensen family and watching Brady, Brooke and Ben grow up through the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA). I remember when each of them entered the show ring for the first time at the Junior National Hereford Expo and now I have had the opportunity to work with them on the leadership level. As well with Brady leading the NJHA as chairman in 2014, Brooke being elected to the NJHA board last summer and with Ben attending his first Faces of Leadership Conference in Colorado last summer. It is really neat to see the junior members and board members you work so closely with grow into leaders and continue to be leaders after their year’s of service to the NJHA are over. Brady Jensen has done just that as he retired from the board in July and already had his leadership role at K-State in place as he helped coach the successful livestock judging team this fall. I have no doubt this will not be the last leadership success story we will hear from the Brady as he works to complete his master’s degree in genetics.
Each year, the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) highlights the Denver sale with the Lot 1 female and the proceeds from this sale support the future of the Hereford breed and our young leaders. I can’t think of a more fitting scenario than to sell a female from the heart of the Jensen family program. From a family that has given so much to the NJHA and the American Hereford Association over the years, it makes this year’s lot extra special and is such a great example of what the foundation stands for. Building leaders is what the NJHA and foundation is all about and Brady, Brooke and Ben Jensen are taking a lifetime involvement in the NJHA and the Hereford breed to define leadership become the best young leaders they can be. •

PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS JAN/FEB 2016
WHAT IS MOTIVATION? Motivation is an inner power, pushing you toward taking action. It is driven by desire, passion and ambition. Who are some of your role models in life and in the show ring? It’s likely that if your mentors have earned your respect, they possess the trait of motivation, which has boosted them to achieve their accomplishments. What is the difference between one who is motivated and one who’s not? Motivated people are inspired within themselves to work hard and achieve goals. Those who lack motivation rely on other people or things, hoping or wishing that they will receive inspiration from an outside source. Ultimately, motivation is a decision; you have to make the choice for yourself. In the show ring, your motivation will stand out to the judge. It will be evident that you went the extra mile at home and plan to go the extra mile in the ring. When you require more out of yourself than others require from you, it is the picture of motivation.

Do’s and Don’ts of MOTIVATION Have Direction. Visualize a clear picture of what you want to accomplish. Whether it’s mastering the art of clipping your animal or bringing home a purple banner, you need to know what your end goal is in order to acquire the skills you will need to achieve it. Neglect Responsibility. Don’t go into situations without first sorting out your priorities. For example, set aside time to work with your animals and stick to your schedule. When the time comes, you can plan fun events with your friends without it interfering with long term goals for your project. Desire to Succeed. When you choose to carve out extra time in your days, weeks and months to devote to your livestock project, your desire to succeed will refuse to waste your time and energy. Your self-motivation is increased by keeping your passion alive. Lack Independence. Don’t expect to gain motivation by not taking responsibility and action. If you always expect another person or source to inspire you, you will not achieve your goals. Decide for yourself what you want, then determine how & when you will do it. Be Optimistic. Things will not always go as planned with your animals when you set goals. Choose to react with optimism and a positive attitude instead of letting a little snag destroy your passion. Optimism fuels motivation. Be Insecure. Don’t let fear of failure keep you from working toward your goal. While it’s natural to experience uncertainty, remember that every day is a chance to learn and grow with your animal. If you don’t win this time, you know what to do differently next time. Build confidence within!

Growing up in Canada when I was little, it was common to play and watch hockey. I would imitate his game winners in the
mud room of our farm house, and I am sure to this day, there are still a few marks on that wall. 4. I can’t live without... the thrill of competition. 5. I could never... imagine growing up without livestock. 6. The easiest way to make me angry is…. tell me I can’t do something. 7. My favorite food stop while on the road is... 8. The person or decision that has made the biggest impact on my life... As I reflect, there have been many people and experiences that have helped shape my life. However, the decision to judge for Dr. Shike and Chris Cassady at the University of Illinois was easily one of the impactful choices I have made. 9. EMBRACE THE SEASON HOW WILL YOU RING IN THE NEW YEAR? BY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS, LIMA, OH
HOW WE MET RANDY We met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show. We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issues. We hope you enjoy his message!
A
re you ready for the New Year? Are you glad last year is over? Are you expectant for the New Year or dreading it? How about winter, are you ready? Depending on what part of our country you live in you’ve probably had a pretty mild one so far. Winter is a very necessary part of the farming process. It gives us time to slow down a bit, refocus and reflect on the next season, which can be very busy. One of my favorite verses in the Bible talks about this process of seasons. Ecclesiastes 3: 1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a
So here is the question: Are you enjoying this season of life? If you don’t change some things, you will repeat it. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and yet expecting a different result. Take in the season of life you are in. Find ways to enjoy it. Weeping can make us stronger. Laughter can bring much needed healing to a troubled soul. When is the last time you laughed? When
Spring is coming when everything becomes new. Prepare for it the best you can and embrace the season no matter what it brings, good can come out it. Take time to get refreshed before the busyness and you will be ready whatever comes. Don’t forget to keep first things first and do the things that matter most. May God bless your new year with blessings from Heaven! ▪

There is so much in this scripture that can apply to each of us. I don’t know how 2015 may have gone for you and your family or what the future is for 2016. But I know whom we should all consult in it all. We cannot let our past hinder our future. If you don’t like what is happening to you, make some changes this winter when activity may be lighter and daylight is shorter. Spend some time reading and reflecting on your life and asking yourself how you make sure that you get to “Enjoy your work!” It is our lot to enjoy what we do.

No dream is too big. No mission is impossible. No task is too great. Rewind nine years and one would find Brian, Laurie and I twenty, sixteen and fifteenyears-old respectively. As a freshman in high school, no aptitude test in the world could have predicted the path my life would go down. The Showtimes is more than just a company, it is my family’s life.
The livestock industry is without question the best, most beneficial and rewarding lifestyle to be a part of. Over the past nine years, the people we have met, the opportunities we have been presented and the memories we have made through running The Showtimes have shaped our lives and who we are as individuals. We are humbled to be given the trust of everyone who has allowed us to share their stories, market their livestock and businesses, and and be a part of some of their most special moments. The people we come in contact with are truly good, hard working people. At the end of the day, without all of you, there would be no Showtimes. Sullivan’s Lakeside Lights are specifically engineered, no heat, 24-volt lights that will chase the shadows away. Made from the highest quality LED crystals on the market, these lights provide the best illumination available. Each specially engineered circuit board is placed inside an extruded aluminum housing making these lights not only light weight with a slim design, but they are also durable and moisture resistant.
