here is something about the fall that has always excited me! From going out and looking at baby calves, traveling to the national shows or heading across the country to various sales to see or buy next year's champions, there is never a dull moment. It has become custom this time of the year for my family and I to spend more hours in the truck or a hotel room than we spend at home. In our industry, however, it is good to know that we are not alone. Whether we are driving to Kansas City in the middle of the night, or heading home from Omaha at the start of the day, no matter what time it is or where we are,we are not alone. There is always someone on the same path. This Fall issue gives an insight into the history and lives of great individuals and livestock events that make this time of year so special! We kick things off with a Fall Show Preview on page 81. One of my favorite things to work on
►Cover Design: The Showtimes, Inc.
for the magazine are articles on individuals within the livestock industry. Be sure to read about the Kroupa family on page 22 and the outstanding successes of the Frink girls on page 108 On page 132, there is a special feature on Hudson Pines Farm that you will not want to miss! The Hall of Fame is an aspect of the magazine that we take a lot of pride in. We love to recognize individuals and events that have positively impacted the livestock industry. Don't put this issue down until you read about the new inductee on page 90. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has contributed to or supported our publication. Brian, Laurie and I started The Showtimes because of our passion for the livestock industry and the people within it. We are looking forward to what the future has in store! Tyler, Whitney, Shelby and Bayley Kroupa talk about livestock, school and life!
22 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
Our family currently resides at our family farm in White Lake, Dakota. Our dad Greg, takes great pride in his large commercial female herd. He owns many promotional bulls and multiple prestigious donor females. Every year he puts on the Sweetheart Sale selling many high quality, functional breeding pieces. This year it will be held in December at the Sioux Falls Regional Livestock Barn in Worthing, SD. We would like to say he has multiple other hobbies, but it seems he simply enjoys showing and looking at high quality cattle the most; he has made it a priority! Our mother Renette Kroupa currently works for Indian Health Services in Fort Thompson, SD. She has been serving as a Physician’s Assistant for more than 25 years and truly loves her job. She works in general practice along with doing sexual abuse investigations at Children’s Safe Place. She loves going to shows and seeing her children succeed, as well as helping to rinse or blow calves when we really need it. Tyler (24) graduated from South Dakota State University in 2010 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. After a few trial runs at other jobs, Tyler has found happiness in his current job at North Central Coop. He currently works in Lebanon, SD as an agronomist and is very good at what he does. Tyler enjoys fishing and hunting with his free time. Other than that he spends a good portion of his time helping his sisters at cattle shows and we love him dearly for always being there for us. Whitney (21) currently attends South Dakota State University where she is majoring in Psychology and will receive a minor in Sociology. Currently, most of her time is spent working at Advance as a Direct Support Professional for Mentally Disabled Clients. She says it doesn’t feel like
work because it is so much fun there, she absolutely loves it. Recently, she received an internship at the Crippled Children’s Home in Sioux Falls, SD next spring, and is very excited about the experiences she will have there. In her free time, she enjoys tanning, traveling and working out. She recently ran a 5K run in Brookings and did very well there. Whitney returns home every chance she gets to spend time with her family. She loves spending time around her siblings and is always willing to give advice and motivation inside or outside of the show ring. Shelby (20) is currently attending South Dakota State University where she is majoring in Nursing. She is currently involved in the SDSU Women’s Choir, Block & Bridle, Little International Staff, 4-H, FFA, South Dakota 4-H Youth Council and will be on the Meats Evaluation Team in the fall. She enjoys playing piano, showing cattle, talking on the phone, and meats judging but one of her biggest passions is livestock judging. She participated on a team consisting of Shelby Kroupa, Taylor Geppert, Blaine Geppert,Tate Glaus and Coach Rod Geppert. She had a lot of fun and success in her 4-H
judging career. Shelby was the high point individual at the Little International contest, 3rd place in Beef Evaluation at the state contest and 4th place in Swine Judging. In addition, their team was runner up twice and Champion SD Senior Livestock Judging Team in 2010, along with being runner up in Oral Reasons. They also did very well at the American Royal and Aksarben contests and moved on to be in the top 10 teams at the NAILE. Shelby may not be in 4-H anymore but enjoys helping wash and blow Bayley’s calves, and she enjoys singing to and making Bayley laugh during barn chores the most. Bayley (15) will be a sophomore at Kimball High School in the fall. She is involved in FCCLA, FFA and is the local FBLA historian. Bayley also enjoys cheerleading and track. Her hobbies consist of texting, tanning, shopping, going on Facebook and going to the river! She has spent most of her time recently moving cows and spraying thistle. Bayley says “thistles are indestructible, you
just can’t kill them!” Bayley loves showing cattle. Her favorite time of year is going to Louisville, Kansas City and Denver where she plans to show again this year. She is looking forward to showing her calves (Felicia, Pamela, Wendi, Carlos and Marcus) in the upcoming jackpot shows. Showing cattle has always been a huge part of our life and we couldn’t imagine life without it. It seems as if a lot of our memories were created in back of the pickup on late night journeys to the next show. In school it seemed as if nobody understood why you would show a “cow,” but showing cattle is not just activity but rather a passion or even a lifestyle. Through washing cattle everyday and cleaning out hog pens, I think we have proven showing livestock takes a lot of dedication. It has taught us so many lessons, created so many memories and let us meet so many people, we wouldn’t give up for the world. We could never thank our parents enough for giving up the opportunity to be involved
24 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
with showing livestock. It has given us so many great opportunities that we may not have had if we didn’t show cattle. It has taught us motivation and responsibility along with giving us the chance to network with many people throughout the United States. Showing has taught us success but also how to take failure with ease. We understand how much money and pressure showing cattle can put on a family but the successes greatly outweigh the challenges that were put in our way. We are so thankful to have had these experiences and all the help from Nick Reimann, the Forman Family, Shannon Voegele, Jason Krick, Bryan McKay, Wade Roegers, Luke Doris, John Griswold and the many others who have helped us along the way. Most of all, thank you mom and dad for always being there when we needed your help on cattle and hogs or even just for your advice on how to best present our animal. Thank you for always being there!

One of the first years I showed at the State Fair I had the dream of winning the State Fair and having the Grand Champion. Everyone can dream about anything but it’s the feeling when your dreams come true that changes everything.
th
disy
I first started showing my fourth grade year at our county fair with bucket calves we had raised ourselves. After my first couple years showing at our country fair we then started showing at the State Fair and national level.

My name is Madisyn Jorgensen, I’m the 18 year old daughter of Monte and Melinda Jorgensen. I have an older sister named Michaela Jorgensen and a younger brother named McKlain Jorgensen. We have shown cattle as a family ever since Michaela and I were very little.
The summer of 2011 was the last shot I had to get Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair. It’s crazy to think how you can work all summer for it to come down to one judge’s opinion. In August I finally accomplished my dream of Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair. Having the judge shake your hand and the roar of the crowd is something words cannot describe. It’s a definite feeling of accomplishment. Dreams can come true and nothing is impossible. So, don’t give up if you don’t get it your first time, just keep trying and maybe some day you will have the great sense of accomplishment!
Madisyn's Reserve Champion Steer from the 2010 Ak-Sar-Ben show.
IOWASTATE FAIR
The dream I had developed into a family dream. As a family we’ve accomplished many things we didn’t even know were possible. As a team we have shown many champions and reserve champions at many levels. My sister, Michaela, had the Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair in 2006. After she won the State Fair, it gave me the desire to work even harder to accomplish my dream. In 2010, I was one step away from accomplishing my dream of being Grand Champion. I exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Steer at the Iowa State Fair and then one month later I exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer at AK-SAR-BEN. The feeling of accomplishment is the greatest feeling any showman can experience. It doesn’t make you work any less, it makes you work even harder to accomplish anything.

My name is Austin Burris and I am 18 years old. I'm from Sherman, IL and a 2011 graduate of Williamsville High School where I was very active in my local FFA chapter and a 10 year 4-H member. I am currently attending Midwest Technical Instiitue majoring in Heating & Cooling and raising cattle. A few of my accomplishments have included exhibiting the Reserve Grand Steer at the 2008 Shorthorn Jr. Nationals and the Champion Steer at the 2010 Chianania Jr. Nationals. I recently won Grand Champion Steer at the Il State Fair and it was a dream come true of my show career.

I have been showing since I was 8 years old. I have shown hogs and cattle. I like helping on our farm. I also have my own corn. I like hunting and participating in my FFA chapter. I go to Platte Valley High School in Kersey, Colorado. I also participate in the Colorado Junior Swine Association and attend Christ Community Church in Greeley. I am involved in the youth group there. I plan on being on my high school bowling team this year. My family consists of my mom and dad Tyler and Becky Heidenreich, my older brother Wyatt and my younger sister Landree. Winning the state fair was very cool and exciting! It was a great honor. I would like to thank my friend Kim Rydgren, the Kip Johnson family, my cousin Tanner, and all my family.

With the success of my family at the Colorado State
Fair, my sisters and I can look back and understand why all the hard work and time we put in with our lambs during the summer paid off. We work extremely hard practicing showing, exercising and feeding our lambs. After all the hard work in the show ring and listening to the judge, Brad Angus, discuss the strong competition in the champion drive, I was relieved and excited at the same time when he shook my hand. I will use the premium and sale money for college and to get ready for the next show season. I would like to thank my family because they have supported me and my sisters in all we do. We also play lots of sports; I am a softball pitcher and Jenna and I play on a team during the summer. We are currently playing high school softball, and we will continue to play basketball this fall. My mom and dad have taught us a lot and have supported us all the years of us showing competitively. It meant a lot to me to have the Grand Lamb not only for me but my whole family.

COLORADOSTATE FAIR
My name is Kayla Frink and this is my 6th year showing sheep in 4-H. In addition to local fairs in Colorado, I have shown at Aksarben, Kansas City, and the National Western Stock Show. This was one of my most exciting and memorable State Fairs. In past years, I had Reserve Champion Lamb at the Weld County Fair twice. However, this year the Colorado State Fair was magical for my family: I was the Champion Intermediate Showman and my twin sister Jenna was Reserve Champion Intermediate Showman. Last year we were Champion and Reserve Junior Showmen. The biggest accomplishment was that my lamb named “It’s On” was named Grand Champion Market Lamb this year. Jenna had the Reserve Grand Champion at the Colorado State Fair in 2009 which was very exciting but nothing like having the Grand this year. The grand drive at State Fair was exciting because my sisters Jenna and Lauren and I had 3 of the 5 division champions in the grand line up.

Grand Champion Market Steer ► Colton Sullivan
Winning the 2011 Wisconsin State Fair is a dream come true. Winning the fair has been my goal for the past few years. It was one of the best days of my life. I worked every day on my steer, but it was also a family project. I wouldn’t have the success today without my parents, Shawn and Jodi. My mom is a full time nurse, but also makes sure to help me out everyday. I also have twin nine-year-old brothers, Seth and Spencer, who help and can’t wait to show themselves next year. I also have a little sister Isabella, who is 5 and is in the barn all the time. My Grandpa Al and good friend John Murphy have also given me advice and support all the way. I am 14 years old and a freshman at Barneveld High School. When I’m not showing, I like to play basketball and baseball. I also love spending time with the rest of my aunts, uncles and cousins. A special thanks to the Murphy family, Barry Nowatzke and a big thank you to my Grandpa Al for all of your help.

$20,000 Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer ► Bailey Dent / 1,325 lbs.
My name is Bailey Dent and I am 16 years old. I am a junior at Rolla Senior High school. I am involved in FFA and 4-H, as my projects I show steers and sheep. I have been showing sheep for 4 years now and steers for 2 years. I am involved in volleyball and soccer. In the future I plan to attend Mizzou for nursing, and later get my major as an anesthetist. This year I was fortunate enough to be able to win the 2011 Missouri State Fair steer show. I don’t even know where to begin with how much it truly meant to me and what a great experience it has been. I have met some really great and knowledgeable people; who all support the youth agriculture program. It has also opened a lot of doors for me. The experience taught so much some of those things being that hard work and dedication really pays off. For those people who have shown cattle before they know what it is like behind the adhesive, combs, and show sticks! It takes a lot of heart to get these animals to this point; and it is a lot of work! You have to love what you are doing. There is no way I could have ever gotten this far by myself I had a lot of people behind me the whole way helping, supporting, and teaching; some of them being my parents, my uncle, the rest of my family, and the rest of Edwards Show Team. I am very blessed to have so many people behind me and so for that thank you!

rior to 1899, livestock and horse shows in the Kansas City area were held irregularly, usually only when convenient or need arose.
However, in 1899, the first of a series of livestock shows was held. The event was to continue annually until now and develop into one of the most outstanding events of its kind in the world, the American Royal Livestock and Horse Show. Roots of the American Royal can be traced to the period shortly after the Civil War, when Texans,

It was then that the Texans returned to Northern markets and drovers pushed the herds to railheads extending out from St. Louis and Chicago. Others headed their herds to richer pastures in Nebraska, Wyoming and even Canada. The railroads, sensing a demand for their services, extended the railheads farther West, reaching such points as Kansas City, St. Joseph, Topeka, Dodge City and Wichita. Kansas City became a focal point for consignment of cattle. It wasn’t long before packers constructed plants in the area to accommodate the supply. Therefore, it was only natural for cattlemen to occasionally display their stock somewhere near the Kansas City Stock Yards. Those who were especially interested in promoting a particular breed were most active in those endeavors. From its beginning as a Hereford Cattle Show, held in a tent at the Kansas City stockyards in 1899, the American Royal has grown to become the largest combined livestock, horse show and rodeo in the nation. In 1915 and 1916 the Royal was held in Convention Hall. Special building to house livestock were erected where the present Municipal Auditorium now stands. However, the facilities proved to be too limited. In 1917 the show moved to Electric Park - then located near what is now Brush Creek Boulevard and the Paseo. Because of World War I, an abbreviated exposition was held at the stock yards in 1918. A year later, the show returned to Convention Hall. In 1920 and 1921 the
event again was at the stockyards, where a fairly adequate pavilion had been improvised for the show in one of the sheep barns. It wasn’t until 1921 that talk of providing a permanent home for the American Royal crystallized. The Chamber of Commerce took up the matter. A spacious new pavilion was built and the 1922 show was held there. The structure cost about $650,000, with the lion’s share born by the Kansas City Stock Yards Company. Businessmen of the city contributed $100,000 and the Hereford and Shorthorn associations added $10,000 each. Everything continued without incident at the Royal for three years. Then on February 13, 1925, disaster struck the pavilion. The building was damaged severely by fire during an automobile show. Three days afterward, rebuilding began. This resulted in an even more spacious and better appointed facility for the 1925 fall show. Thereafter the show prospered and grew. Even through the depression of the 1930’s and the war years of the ‘40’s, the American Royal continued to expand. However, the World War II shows were limited in scope, and were more or less confined to pen areas in the stock yards. American Royal buildings during the war were converted to a glider building plant. At the end of the war, the show bounced back to become greater than before. Through the post-war years,
the show continued to gain stature - until Black Friday - July 13, 1951 - when the Kaw River went out of its banks and destroyed much of the Royal facilities. Officials pushed clean-up operations and the show was held in the fall of that year.

The American Royal is known for its popular entertainment at its Horse Show. Many noted personalities, even presidents of the United State and officials of foreign nations, have attended these functions. Many years have passed since the American Royal first was thought of and there were times when it appeared the event could not continue. But the faith and support of civic-minded individuals and area businessmen have made it possible for the Livestock and Horse Show of the American Royal to continue and to expand into one of the nation’s most important expositions. In 1975 was the addition of the Kemper Arena and the Rodeo. The American Royal remains one of America’s top Livestock Shows today. The Showtimes would like to congratulate the American Royal for being selected as the September/October 2011 Fall Hall of Fame Inductee. Not only has it provided the livestock industry, producers, and exhibitors with a show to promote and show off their livestock, it has overcome numerous obstacles and grown to be arguably one of the most prestigious livestock shows today! The American Royal has the distinguished honor of being the first ever livestock show to be selected as a Hall of Fame member!

Layne Sanders
Greensburg, Indiana BY LAYNE SANDERS
i, I'm Layne Sanders. I will soon be a sophomore at Greensburg Community High School. My parents are Scott and Beth Sanders. I have an older brother Cody. Cody and I are the fourth generation of our family to show cattle, we have medals from my great grandfather showing that date back to the 1930's. I will be starting my eighth year of 4-H this year. We have a small herd of cattle that consists of mostly former show heifers - about half are Shorthorns and the other half are Chi, Maine, and Angus crosses. My favorite time of year on the farm is spring when we are having baby calves. Showing cattle for us is definitely a family activity; I receive a lot of help from my brother Cody and my grandparents Charles and Judy Sanders. We have met some great people and traveled to many places while showing. Cody and I have both been lucky enough to be on the Indiana Junior Beef Cattle Association Executive Board. My favorite show is Hoosier Beef Congress; I look forward to it every December. Our family's best memory from showing came last year at the Indiana State Fair, when my heifer Sophie was named Grand Champion Maine-Anjou. I am currently maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and was recently awarded the United States Achievement

Academy Award which honors students on a national level. Last year I won the Senator Richard Luger State Essay Contest and an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. for me and my family. We even got the opportunity to have lunch with Senator Luger and he arranged for us to tour the White House. My high school just started offering FFA and I am looking forward to joining this year. I would like to get involved with the livestock judging team. My hobbies are reading, art, playing basketball, and hanging out with my friends. My future plans are to attend Purdue University and major in an agriculture related field. Our last stop was the Indiana State Fair where I helped out with the showmanship rings and at the Hoosier Rib Eye Tent as part of my duties with IJBCA Executive Board.

The Frinks
Kayla, Jenna & Lauren Share Their Story
W
BY THE FRINK FAMILY, EATON, CO
ow! We just had an awesome Colorado State Fair. Mike and Amy Frink with their daughters Jenna and Kayla (14-year-old fraternal twins) and Lauren (age 10) from Eaton CO own and manage Frink Show Lambs. The family exhibited lambs at the 2011 Colorado State Fair and had an outstanding show. Lauren had Champion Speckle Face, Jenna showed the Champion Light Weight Blackface, and Kayla, whose lamb was Champion Middle Weight Blackface, was also chosen as the Overall Grand Champion Lamb. It was an exciting and memorable moment to have all three Frink girls in the front line of the grand drive of the Junior Market Lamb Show. In addition to the three division champions, the Frinks competed with nine other lambs in Pueblo and were awarded either first or second place with nearly all of them. It takes hard work and dedication from the whole family to make this level of success happen. This is Jenna and Kayla’s sixth year and Lauren’s second year competing in junior market lamb shows on the county, state and
national levels. Jenna and Kayla are freshmen at Highland High School in Ault, CO and Lauren is in fifth grade at Highland Elementary in Pierce, CO. The girls are actively involved in sports: Kayla is a pitcher and plays infield for her travel softball team, and Jenna either catches or plays shortstop. Both are currently playing on the high school softball team. They are also avid basketball players and look forward to their first season of high school competition. Lauren is following in her older sisters’ footsteps and also plays volleyball, basketball and softball. The Frink girls also enjoy competing in 4-H Livestock Judging and their hard work has paid off in this
108 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
arena as well. Their Junior Team has not lost a contest in the last two years. Mike and Amy both grew up showing livestock in 4-H and FFA. Mike, originally from Oregon, moved to Colorado to attend Colorado State University (CSU). Amy was raised in LaPorte CO and also attended CSU. During their undergraduate training in Animal Sciences, they were both members of successful livestock judging teams at CSU and have a passion for raising and showing livestock. The family currently runs a flock of 70 mature Hampshire based ewes and have 20 head of replacement ewe lambs that begin
lambing in January and finish in March. They have had continued success in the junior market show lamb industry and have impacted the lives of many families through their help and support. The Frinks bred the Grand Champion lamb at the 1998 Colorado State Fair; the Reserve Grand Champion at the 2000 Colorado State Fair, and in 2009, Jenna exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion lamb at the State Fair in Pueblo, CO. Since long before they were old enough to show in 4-H, the Frink girls frequented the show ring as both spectators and competitors. This lifelong exposure, coupled to a strong family work ethic has contributed to their competitive edge as livestock showmen. Before Jenna and Kayla were old enough to compete in 4-H, they each showed in pre-junior showmanship classes in regional jackpot shows and often traded off winning the competitions. They have both won Champion and Reserve Champion Junior Showman at the Weld County Fair and Colorado State Fair on numerous occasions. Jenna was also named Champion Junior Showman at the 2010 National Western Stock Show in Denver. Lauren is following the example set by her big sisters and has won showmanship
at both numerous jackpots and also at the Weld County Fair both years that she has been in 4-H. Although 2011 hallmarks an exceptional year for the Frink family, they are not strangers to the winner’s circle. The family has had the Reserve Champion lamb at the Weld County Fair on three separate occasions (Kayla twice and Jenna once), in addition to Jenna’s Reserve Champion lamb at the Colorado State Fair two years ago. The family’s first Grand Champion lamb, shown by Jenna at a spring jackpot show in 2006, is still in the family flock. That champion ewe is the grandmother of a lamb which Jenna showed at the Colorado State Fair this year which placed second in his class. The Frink girls have competed at numerous national shows including the Aksarben Livestock Show in Omaha, NE; American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, MO; North American Livestock Show in Billings, MT; and also the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. The family has been fortunate to have the opportunity to travel extensively and compete with their lambs at national shows. These endeavors have enabled the Frinks to meet and befriend countless people who share their passion
for showing livestock. Every Colorado State Fair marks the end of summer for the Frink family, and with it, the culmination of a year’s worth of work. As they enter the fairgrounds in Pueblo each year, the family hopes their dedication will pay off with a successful show. Still, their constant goals of success through teamwork while practicing gracious winning or losing are more important than any trophy or banner. Above all, Mike and Amy hope they have instilled a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility and respect in their children that will propel them forward toward a bright future. It means the world to the family to hear others comment on “How much fun it is to watch the girls show lambs” and “How hard they work together as a family.” Mike, Amy, Jenna, Kayla and Lauren extend a special thanks to everyone who has contributed to their success. Now, it is time to get geared up for the next show...

griculture has done a lot of things that are right, but they have been really poor at communicating with the public. Today, Food, Inc. is the most watched documentary in the U.S. Many high schools and colleges show the movie to their classes. It presents modern agriculture in a very negative way. During my book and movie tours for the HBO Movie – Temple Grandin, I have learned that the public is hungry for just factual information. When I went to Hollywood, I was asked lots of questions about how slaughter plants work and “what is a feedlot?” They were just curious. They asked curiosity questions, they just wanted to know. In our communications with the public, we need to communicate with the average person. When I went to bookstores in large cities to promote Animals in Translation and Animals Make us Human, people came up to me and told me that they were pleased that I was working to improve conditions. During my career, I have worked hard to improve animal handling. There have been many improvements. The problem is that the public does not know about them. When you show your heifer, steer, lamb, or pig you are in a wonderful position to communicate with the public. You should put videos up on YouTube and post pictures of your animal on FaceBook. Write about how showing cattle has taught you responsibility and caring. Every 4-H and FFA student should share their experiences with friends and relatives who come from the city. The best type of communication is to tell about your own personal experiences. Do not use pre-made PR material. Tell about how you raised your animal and cared for it. The public is fascinated by how people in animal agriculture do things. A video on grooming your show animal could go viral. People will watch it and laugh about the cattle “beauty shop” but during that video you could also present some serious messages.
I have taken many non-industry people through a well run large slaughter plant. They are amazed that the cattle remain calm when procedures are done right. We need to open up the door electronically and show what we are doing. I am proud of the equipment I have designed for the livestock industry and I have videos on YouTube. You will need to monitor your site. A few nasty people will write swear words and say some really horrid things. If they use bad language, I just block that person and delete their post. However, do not take down posts that you do not agree with. Those should stay up, and you should give a thoughtful reply. Wait until the next day before you post it. Your reply should be thoughtful, not angry. Get out on the internet and show the many folks that you are proud of what you do. Tell personal stories about your life with animals. The public also loves “How to videos” explaining what a Scotch comb is and then show them how you use it.

Life
The Journey of Life.
A
BY BRAD HENDERSON, HIS OUTFIT, KIOWA, COLORADO
s I sit down to write I’m reflecting on the last show season. The calendar most folks use runs from January to December, but in the livestock world our calendar runs from birth to market. It was this time last year that Mallory, my daughter, and I were out in the pasture looking at calves trying to decide what to do with them. What ones shall we sell, what should we keep to show? What shows will we go to? What will it take to raise this animal? With the ones that we are going to sell how will we market them? There are all kinds of questions without a lot of certainty attached. Finally we decided that she wanted to show a steer and we decided which one she liked the best. Mallory is 11 years old and in her mind, like a lot of kids, that steer is the best and should do very well in the show ring just because it’s her steer. We all know that’s far from the truth. It takes a daily commitment to get that steer from today to the finish line. So what is first? Well, we have to buy the steer from Steve. So we agree on a price and pay him for the steer but it doesn't stop there. We need a place for the steer until we can get our barn and pen built for him at home. So we make an agreement for the steer to stay at
Steve’s house. Now we need to decide what to feed him. There are a thousand choices of what to feed. My thoughts are simple and basic to start with and Mallory agrees. Sometimes we can add all kinds of stuff that promises big results in the end but most of the time they just add confusion to the diet. Now it’s time to halter break the steer. If you have ever done this you know what I am talking about. The plan is to take a wild animal and tame it down so it will do what you want it to do. Luck was on our side and we were dealing with an animal that was very cooperative. Mallory got this task completed without a lot of trouble. It’s always easier with an animal that wants to cooperate. For the next few months not a lot happened. The steer ate twice a day and he grew, nothing fantastic. Then it was off to the National Western Stock Show for the first outing of the season. The point to this story is not how well the steer did but who was involved. Let’s see- Dad, Logan, Grandma, Grandpa, Sheila, and Mike. All of these people had a part in making the trip to Denver happen. Mallory and her steer did well at the show and met a lot of new friends. Back home the steer spends more time just eating and growing. Now it’s a trip to the Green and
118 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
Gold show. People involved to make this happen are Dad, Brad, Suzy, McKenna, Kort, Kaden, Kodi and Shane. What a great trip and the steer did well. Oh yeah I forgot, before this the steer decided to bloat a little so the Vet had to be called to get him healthy again. Now its back home- guess what? Life goes on, the steer eats twice a day and lays around and gets bigger. Mallory had to change his feed because he is getting bigger so he needs more to eat. If you don't give him more he won't grow right? Makes perfect sense. Fast forward to June…. Junior Nationals in Wyoming. This time we add a few more people to our list that are involved in making this event happen. Ashley, Cevey, Cole, Cauy, Dan, Emma, Junior Board, Dean and his adults crew and of course Dad. What a great week! The steer did well and everything went without serious misadventure. Back home we have 30 days till fair so it is time to finish well. The steer keeps eating twice a day. Wow dad he sure drinks a lot of water and eats a lot. Now it’s fair time. People involved, Extension Staff, Fair Board, Volunteers, Logan and Dad. The steer shows very well and now it’s sale day. Time to say good bye to Jack the steer. He finished WELL. So many of us have experienced this

story over the last year. I used to look at it a lot different though. Before I had Christ at the center of my life, showing was about winning and me. Now it’s about the journey and people. The Christian walk is not about being religious and doing everything right it’s about living how Christ lived and loving on a lot of people. If you look at the story of Mallory and her steer it took a lot of people to get from start to finish. When you live the Christian life we are asked to share our lives with other people and to ask for help when we need to. The Christian life is not always exciting either. Just like the steer some days are just eating and drinking and growing. Watch out for those times- they can be where we get into trouble. Life just doesn't look stylish enough at those times so we start looking around for something better. But in those times, we are just growing and getting ready for the next step in life. You know when I talked about the diet for the steer being basic and simple as my choice. It is the same in my spiritual life, the Bible, nothing more nothing less. There are a lot of publications on how to better your life but I have not found anything that compares to the simplicity and truth of
God’s word. Proverbs is a great example. Straight forward instructions on how to have a good life. Besides when you do get off track it doesn't take a lot of research to figure out where you went wrong. In the book of Genesis God placed man over all the animals of the earth. I don't think he did this so we could be large and in charge. I think he did it to show us how He takes care of us. If we live our lives like He shows us, we spend a lot of time caring for our animals. Making sure they are fed, have shelter and water. If I spend time loving on my animals in that way, I can trust in the fact that my heavenly Father will do that for me. What more can we ask for, someone to watch over me. Life is a lot like our journey with Jack the steer. It is full of uncertainty and questions. But with a good guide book and plenty of people to help you along the way, you also can finish well. I would like to thank everyone that touched and blessed my family this past year. Without you, my life would not be the same. I would also invite any one that does not have a personal relationship with Christ to get a hold of the men at FCC or myself. We would love to talk with you and get to know you better. ▪

Life as a Show Mom on the East Coast
A
BY RADAWN ELMORE, SOUTH CAROLINA
warm hello from the South! We have been enduring extreme heat temperatures, but I know we aren’t the only ones. I’m sure I can speak for your family, as well as mine, by saying that we are ready for the cool, fall shows. I used to beat the heat by going to the beach or out in the boat. Now, I beat the heat by standing in front of the nearest Sullivan’s Turbo Fan. I guess that is just part of being an official “Show Mom”. My daughter, Carrie, is responsible for giving me this title.
My husband, Tim and I have three daughters. Carrie is our youngest. Our oldest, Amy, had me marching alongside parades as she twirled her baton, and applauding in the stands as she cheered on the basketball courts. Our middle, Brandy, had me learning the ropes of showing pigs at our county fair, for seven years. This county fair is where Carrie learned about the hobby of showing cattle. The term “cow show” meant showing one steer, one time, at one county fair. Little did I know, she would soon turn her new hobby into my family’s everyday lifestyle. The term “cow show” now implies traveling many hours, multiple times per year, across the country with who knows how many head of cattle. Just like the term “cow shows” underwent a transformation, so did my life. Any show mom knows that cow shows will always have precedence over any other activity in her life. They have been a major determining factor in many aspects of my life. After living in the Tampa Bay area of central Florida for 45 years, Carrie and my husband, Tim, agreed it was time to move on. Raising Maine Anjou cattle was on the top of their agenda, and Florida was not the best place to do that. 120 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
So, with some hesitation, a good deal of persuasion, and lots of prayer, I finally agreed. In 2005, Tim and I picked up our life and headed to South Carolina with Carrie, all of the cows, and (of course) the camera. Since that time, we have traveled to countless shows, covering a lot of the country. After moving, Tim and I became the leaders of the county’s 4-H beef club. We were quick to start looking for shows to compete in. Shortly after the hunt began, we realized that finding shows similar to what we were accustomed to attending in Florida wasn’t going to happen very easily. Quality beef shows in SC seemed to hide from us. This led to what could be called “show chasin’”. I would search high and low for any registration form I could get my hands on. From Georgia to North Carolina, we began to find opportunities for Carrie to exhibit the cattle. With us relocating and starting anew, the three of us had to work as team. Each of us had our own responsibilities necessary to keep the show cattle business moving forward. One member of the team is Tim. He is who I refer to as the brains behind the operation. He decides who gets bred to whom, who gets culled, who is show worthy, etc. He is also the official cow clipper for our family and the 4-H club. I started out with that title. Quickly, I realized that my calling was in the salon, not in the barn. I handed the clippers over and haven’t taken them back yet! After all, the show mom isn’t supposed to be part of the fitting team anyway, right?! The next member of the team is Carrie. She is not only our exhibitor, but our grooming expert. She also assists with breaking and getting sale calves ready, along with daily operations around the farm. When show time gets close, she is in charge of making the check list and knowing that everything gets loaded on the trailer. The final mem-
ber of the team is me. After all these years, my job is fairly simple… • Register the calves for the shows • Make the hotel reservations • Have the clothes (especially the show clothes) washed, ironed and ready, with boots to match each outfit. • Keep an ample supply of food, snacks and drinks available • Be available to run to the nearest town for anything you can possibly imagine (show supplies, office supplies, hardware, grocery) • Locate the cleanest laundromat as soon as you get to the show location • DON’T FORGET THE CAMERA! With all of my responsibilities as a show mom, pictures are definitely a top priority. Shortly after Carrie’s show career began, boxes of pictures started to take up space in my home office. Technology solved the issue of the growing number of boxes, but now the computer’s hard drive sure is getting full. These pictures are not professional by any means, but if an event happened, there is a picture to go with it. Ask any of Carrie’s fellow showmen, and they will attest that Carrie’s mom has a camera close by. Whether planned or candid, someone always has a pose to offer. Just ask the members of the Junior Maine Anjou Board. I may get tired of carrying a camera around, and my office may be full of boxes, but in the end isn’t the most important part of this adventure making lasting memories? It is for this “show mom”. Recipe County Fair Blue Ribbon Cheerio Cookies 3/4 c. sugar 3/4 c. light corn syrup 1 c. peanut butter 4 cups Honey Nut Cheerios Mix sugar and corn syrup together in a large saucepan on medium heat. Bring to the point where it just begins to boil and take it off the heat. Mix in peanut butter and stir well. Mix in Cheerios until they are all covered with peanut butter mixture. You can use a spoon or cookie scoop to drop out cookies onto wax paper. This recipe is one that we always made growing up in 4-H for the County Fair. It's a winning recipe for sure and one that is my favorite!

the remaining cheese. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 350 degrees until crescent roll dough is browned and appears done. My mom's beef wellington recipe is a family favorite and is super easy. My mom always has these ingredients in the fridge and it's a great supper for a family. You can experiment with different vegetables, but since we raise corn and cattle it's our favorite version!
Teramisu is the name of my cake business, not only because my name fits so perfectly into it, but also because it is my favorite dessert. This is a super easy version of tiramisu and if you love this italian dessert you should try it today!
TERAmisu 2 tbsp instant coffee 2 tbsp sugar 1 cup hot water 2 packages of ladyfingers 2 packages of cream cheese, softened ½ cup sugar 1 tsp almond flavoring OR 1 tbsp Coffee Liqueur 1 tub whipped topping Cocoa Powder Dissolve instant coffee in hot water and add sugar and set aside. Arrange first package of ladyfingers in a 9x13 dish. Brush with coffee mixture. In a large bowl mix cream cheese and sugar together. Optionally you may add almond flavoring or Coffee Liqueur for an extra punch. Lightly fold in whipped topping. Spread half of the cream cheese mixture over lady fingers. Arrange second package over the top. Brush with remaining coffee mixture. Top off with remaining cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle with cocoa powder. Refrigerate for 2 hours before serving.

HUDSON PINES FARM The Story of the Rockefeller's Farm BY LISA REID
132 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2011 THE SHOWTIMES 133
Hudson Pines Farm In 1976, Mrs. Peggy Rockefeller founded Hudson Pines Farm. Her love of the land and agriculture drove her desire to breed cattle. At the age of 60, Rockefeller started building her Simmental operation with 17 head of horned and polled 3/4 and 7/8 females. She chose Simmental because of their maternal abilities and docility, in addition to their being a fairly new breed at that time - she thought she could contribute to their growth. During Rockefeller’s 20 years in the Simmental business, she sold cattle, embryos and semen to 14 countries, including the former Soviet Union while it was still communist. The semen that went to Australia, as well as Brazil and Paraguay, ended up with progeny in the winner’s circle. While the success experienced overseas and in other countries is paramount,
Hudson Pines’ genetics continue to provide the United States with quality Simmental and Sim-Angus cattle, both male and female, which continue to receive top honors at the national level. Hudson Pines Farm is distinguished not only for its superior cattle genetics but also for its charitable and literary history. Located in Sleepy Hollow, New York, just 35 miles north of downtown New York City, the farm sits on 3,000 acres and is intertwined with the Rockefeller State Park. The property boasts over 55 miles of gravel “carriage” trails which are open to the public for walking, jogging and horseback riding. Miles of rock walls, which loom above some of the trails, represent the Rockefeller’s loyalty and kindness to their employees in that
they are the result of a work project created by the Rockefellers to provide jobs for their workers during the Great Depression. Famous author Washington Irving, who wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle and numerous other literary works, resided in Sleepy Hollow. One of the bridges that sits on the farm is thought to be the one Ichabod Crane rode over in the "Headless Horseman." Rockefeller’s commitment to agriculture, however, did not end with Hudson Pines. In 1980, she started American Farmland Trust (www.farmland.org), a national non-profit which has been a leader for over 30 years in helping farmers and ranchers stay on their land. Rockefeller’s granddaughter, Miranda Kaiser, who is part owner of Hudson Pines, still serves as the Trust's chairman of the board. Following Peggy Rockefeller’s death in March 1996, it was the desire of her husband, Mr. David Rockefeller, to keep Hudson Pines going on the same vigorous path that she had set. He kept the business running until the Farm's leadership was assumed by Kaiser. Rockefeller continues to live on

the farm and commutes back and forth to work at Rockefeller Plaza each week. The main Rockefeller estate sits directly across the road from Hudson Pines. Tours of the famous “Kykuit Mansion”, built by John D. Rockefeller, offer the public an opportunity to view the estate. Since its founding, Hudson Pines has worked hard to develop a reputation for producing superior Simmental and Sim-Angus genetics that go on to succeed for their customers in both the show ring and pasture. The Farm expects their cows to produce females that are maternal and phenotypically pleasing and bulls that are stout and rugged enough to adapt to any environment. Hudson Pines is continually looking to add new, fresh, cutting edge genetics to their line-up of elite donor cows and
herd bulls. They use an extensive embryo program to further enhance the production of superior females. Embryo transfer progeny make up the majority of their calf crop. They flush most of their donors on the farm, in addition to having a small handful of donors that are flushed IVF at TransOva in Chillecothe, Missouri. The success of Hudson Pines is measured by the success of their customers and their happiness with their product. On Monday, October 24, 2011, Hudson Pines Farm will host its annual “The Living Legacy VII” sale at their farm in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Although it is primarily a female sale, a small handful of show prospect bulls will also be offered. (The majority of the Farm’s bulls sell in the “Bulls of the Big Sky Sale” held every February in

We would also like to thank Casey and Amber Buzzard, Ryan Haefner, and Megan Edwards for all of your help. Finally, a special thanks to the Rockefeller family and everyone at Hudson Pines Farm! eZall tip
The best cattle cleaning products on the market.
by: Dave Guyer, Illinois
This time of the year here in the midwest most of the state fairs are getting over and already the phone is starting to ring about next years projects. This months tip is going to be on selecting your next project. First you have to sit down as a family and decide WHAT, WHEN, and WHERE.....What you are going to buy? Now a days the heifer show is as big or bigger than the steer show so if you decide to buy a steer you are working for the end point and trying to make the premium sale. If you decide to show a heifer then you can show all year then make a cow from her and start trying to raise your own, that's your choice.......When is where most people get in a hurry and the biggest advice I have is to SLOW DOWN! Take your time in looking for the next calf. I promise that taking your time has more chances in paying off in the long run than getting in a hurry. People that get in a hurry, usually are disappointed because the calves are young and not developed enough. There are plenty out there to pick from.......Where you buy is important because wherever you buy is where you are going to look for advice throughout the year. You want to make sure it's the advice you need. Ask yourself, "do I trust this person and does this person have the capabilities to help me accomplish the goals I have?" That's also who you are going to look to for help through the year, whether it is clipping, fitting, or going to the show. Last, that is probably who you and your kids are going to be hanging around so make sure they are a good mentor. These sometimes can be as important as the calf you buy.
