FALL FORWARD

W

Work hard, think hard and dream hard. hen we started The Showtimes, our slogan was, "A magazine for the exhibitor, by the exhibitor." Six and a half years later, that catchphrase still rings true; but is a lot deeper than ever anticipated. Putting together the magazine has introduced us to numerous individuals, taken us to new places and shows, and opened our eyes to the history behind people, products, and events. Whether we are at a show, on the phone or the computer in the office, every week we have random conversations with friends, advertisers, and individuals that remind us how blessed we are to be a part of the livestock industry. In life, there are no participation ribbons. Raising and showing livestock forces people, both young and old alike, to work hard, think hard, and dream hard in order to be successful. No other lifestyle will turn an eight year old loose with a 1,300 pound animal with nothing but a leather halter and a show stick to be critiqued by a judge. That exposure to success and failure starting at a young age, to some, may seem too much for a

kid to handle. In reality, it teaches them life lessons that some grown adults will never learn. Hard work pays off. Sometimes life is not fair. How to win. How to lose. Communication and reasoning skills. Responsibility. The list goes on and on. From advertisements and special features alike, this Fall Edition of The Showtimes encompasses the true essence of what the livestock industry stands for and gives to those involved in it. The Save the Cowboy Message on page 65 is one you won't want to miss. Brad Henderson shares how, "A man who values hard work won't give in to laziness when success finds him...A man who knows both where he stands, and where he's going, is a man with true grit." The livestock industry provides individuals with the opportunity to have "true grit." There is a history surrounding the shows and the people involved in it. For The Showtimes to be a part of such a tradition - what an honor.

I think it would be an excellent idea to feature children with special needs who show livestock. Pictured is our son Tyler and daughter Hannah in the show ring this year. There are so many kids out there who have any number of different disabilities that show livestock.

I am glad to see your Bible verses and your Christian articles. You work good with kids. The Hall of Fame is a neat idea as well. The Showtimes is an all around good magazine and you touch on things that other magazines don't. You are not just ads. We always look forward to getting it in the mail.

Agriculture needs strong leaders—people with passion and talent who believe in themselves and the future. BY: BRIAN MIKE, IA

B

etween now and 2050 the world’s population will rise from 7 billion to 9 billion. World demand for protein, fiber and fuel will continue to increase and it is up to agribusiness to develop a strategy to meet this demand. The need for more young people to choose a career path in the agriculture industry is clear. Human capital is a current issue of discussion with large and small businesses, governmental agencies, associations and production enterprises. The number of young people growing up on the farm or ranch and entering agri-careers is declining. This historic low source of new talent will not meet future demands. 24 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

>>>Summit Farms raises purebred Charolais as well as percentage Charolais, Angus, and Herefords.

As a young person you often times think about what your career path could be and we all try and identify that perfect job. I was fortunate enough to find the right path for me and hope to guide you towards yours. I grew up showing livestock in Wisconsin. The camaraderie, adrenaline of show day, and long hours in the barn leading up to the show all reflect the strong work ethic I bring forth in my job. Currently I live just outside of Iowa Falls, Iowa where I run a few club lamb ewes and am looking to start raising some percentage Charolais. I always was eager to learn and experience more. When I was 17 I was selected to be an exchange student for a school year in Goiania, Brazil. The decision to be a foreign exchange student was the greatest decision I’ve ever made in life. Living with a new family, in a new country with a language barrier was a challenge that taught me to overcome adversity and help make me the person I am today. I attended college at Iowa State University where I was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. During my junior year at Iowa State I returned to Brazil to work for a subsidiary company of Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM). I spent the semester traveling Brazil with a production and sales team performing various audits on ADM farms and grain handling facilities. After graduating in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural

Business from Iowa State University I began full time employment at Summit Farms in Alden, Iowa. Summit Farms is a diversified row crop and livestock operation located in both north central Iowa and north central Nebraska. My responsibilities are extremely varied in my position at Summit Farms. Some days I am working with our Brazilian partners on farmland acquisitions and the next day I may be at our Nebraska operation to go through a production plan for our newly expanded commercial recip herd. Agriculture needs strong leaders— people with passion and talent who believe in themselves and the future. Thus, I challenge all of YOU, junior livestock enthusiasts, to pursue careers in agriculture. Do not be afraid to step outside of your comfort zones—experience something different, take a travel

course in college to a different country, or exhibit a new species of livestock at your state fair. Diversification and adaptability goes a long way in life. I will leave you with a quote by the great Dale Carnegie “Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare”. In the past year Summit Farms has worked diligently to create a junior livestock program and a progressive seedstock operation plan for our registered Charolais cow-calf operation. Summit Farms believes the future of the agriculture and cattle industry will be defined by a new generation of leaders who are talented, passionate, and committed to the industry. Hence, our initiation of the Summit Farms Scholarship program for junior exhibitors who purchase Summit Farms heifers or steers. More information on the scholarship program can be found on our website— www. summitcharolais.com. Furthermore, be on the lookout for more Summit Farms sponsored activities and opportunities for youth livestock exhibitors and producers—we will host clinics and learning events for young people to learn more about the showring and the beef industry in general. ▪ 25

BY LISA REID (INTERVIEW WITH DR. DAVID FABER)

here are two sides to the livestock industry – the old and the new. Its foundation is the old fashioned values of hard work and character. At the same token, it combines those values with up-and-coming trends and technology. It is the only trade that incorporates both ends of this spectrum seamlessly. On the cutting edge of this combination of past and future is the Faber Family from Sioux Center, Iowa. Through a recent interview with Dr. David Faber, I learned how his family’s involvement in the livestock, primarily cattle, industry incorporated family time, show ring successes, and a company that has pushed the livestock industry into a whole new dimension. Dr. Faber was born and raised on a livestock farm in Illinois. While he considered himself only an “entry level showman,” he became interested in cattle as a youth and exhibited them at the local level growing up. When it came time for college, Dr. Faber attended the University of Illinois for both

38 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

his undergraduate degree and his study of Veterinary Medicine. He was extremely interested in bovine reproductive technology. At that time, traditional Embryo Transfer (ET) was just beginning as a surgical process and required a degree to practice. Towards the end of his schooling, Dr. Faber decided to take one year to practice food animal veterinary medicine. With Sioux Center, Iowa being a region dense with livestock, he moved there from Illinois to practice the trade. During this year, he began doing embryo transfer work in addition to general practice. At the completion of that year, Dr. Faber made the area his permanent residence after developing a love for the

area and people. Sioux Center became the starting block for Trans Ova Genetics. Founded in 1980 by Dr. Faber, Trans Ova Genetics is the leading reproductive and genetic technology company in the United States. There are two facets to the company: Agriculture and Biomedical. In addition to embryo collection and transfer, Trans Ova Genetics offers services in In Vitro embryo production, sexed semen via flow cytometry, ultrasonography, cloning and genetic engineering. While the company’s biomedical toolbox is impressive with cloning and producing genetically engineered animals to serve as medical models; the primary focus of Trans Ova Genetics is to achieve greater genetic gain for both beef and dairy cattle. The reproductive and genetic technology that Dr. Faber has introduced to

the livestock industry has allowed cattle producers to strengthen their genetics and zone in on traits that they wish to pass on in their herds with more ease. A recent technology that is becoming mainstream in the current industry is cloning. ViaGen is a subsidiary company of Trans Ova Genetics that specializes in the cloning of bovine, equine, and other species. Dr. Faber describes the cloning of livestock as an extremely powerful tool to use when a producer needs genetic copies of high quality animals. The genetic gain cloning provides to the livestock industry is uncanny. Not only does it carry on quality traits, the technology gives producers the capability to greatly expand their reproductive potential, keep up with demand for offspring, embryos and semen, produce an animal stud that is genetically identical

to their best steer, barrow or gelding, reduce the impact of unexpected injury or death, and quickly improve the quality and consistency within their herd while expanding their marketing opportunities. By flipping through a recent edition of The Showtimes, walking through herd sire ally at Denver, or following the sires of show winners, one will quickly catch on to the increasing use of “Clone” following multiple sire’s pedigrees. The livestock industry is utilizing Dr. Faber’s technology and the results have been impressive. Without Trans Ova Genetics, the livestock industry would be years behind

its current state. Dr. Faber’s interest in the livestock industry, however, expands wider than Trans Ova Genetics into his family and personal life as well. Dr. Faber and his wife Kay raised their three children, Sara, Dan and Tyler, around cattle and in the show ring. They valued showing as a family and consider it a “great family hobby.” When their children began to show, the Faber’s set four goals in relation to competing. The first goal they instilled in their children was to win with grace and lose with dignity. They realized that they would get the opportunity to lose more than they would win and made a conscious effort to set examples to others around them. To understand that hard work and passion overcomes most short comings was their second goal. This statement holds true in the show ring as well as all areas of life. Third, Dr. Faber and Kay wanted their children to be self-validating and not let others set their opinions of themselves. Every time they walked into the show ring, they taught them to listen to what the judge had

to say about their project. Then they were to look in the mirror and see if what he said held truth. For example, if the judge told them that their calf was not sound. They, in turn, would validate if he was right. If so, they were to fix it. If not, they were to find out how they had given him that opinion. The ultimate purpose of this goal was for their children to have self confidence in themselves. Finally, they never wanted to come home saying, “We should have.” If you work hard and do everything you can, then there is no reason to not hold your head up high – win or lose. These mindsets enabled the Faber Family to have a strong show ring presence all throughout their show careers. Over a 13 year period, they were Supreme or Reserve Supreme 26 times at the Iowa Beef Expo, the Iowa State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. There were 12 of the 13 years when they had a Supreme or Reserve Supreme steer or female at the Iowa State Fair. While Sara, Dan and Tyler have all aged out as junior livestock exhibitors, the Faber’s continue to get together to go to the fair and talk about cattle and showing. The family memories that their involvement in the cattle industry has provided them is irreplaceable. Dr. Faber and his family are prime examples of how the livestock industry entails both lost values and constantly evolving technologies. From Trans Ova Genetics and its impact on the industry to the Faber’s rewarding involvement in the cattle show ring, they have worked to take from the industry all that it has to offer while giving back to it in any way they can. A very special moment came in 2008 when Tyler Faber exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer and the Supreme Champion Breeding heifer at the Iowa State Fair. In 2010 they exhibited the Grand Champion Steer with a clone of the 2008 steer. . While they initially cloned the 2008 steer following its win at the 2008 Iowa Beef Expo in hopes of producing a bull calf (which they did), the win itself was something to be proud of as it allowed the Faber’s to showcase cloning technology. As the steer industry is constantly progressing, however, cloning is still best used with breeding females and bulls to improve genetics and produce rare carbon copies. Tomorrow, the present will be the past. Given all that Dr. Faber has accomplished as a professional and father, it will be exciting to see what the future holds. ■

HOW TO BE A MAN OF TRUE GRIT

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” – Ephesians 6: 13

I

BY BRAD HENDERSON, CO

n the verse above (and the entire chapter) Paul is explaining to the Ephesians that this life isn’t easy. And the road God has for us isn’t an easy one, but it is an awesome one if we choose to walk it. I’ve always had a problem with the little picture that goes with most study bibles when it comes to this verse. I know every generation and every culture sees things differently, but most studies have a picture of a Roman soldier. And I agree, Paul was probably chained to one when he wrote the book of Ephesians, but to me the embodiment of this verse is John Wayne. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the oil patches of West and South Texas the past few years. A few months ago I was in the Eagle Ford play, south of San Antonio, and picked up a copy of one of the local papers. One of the articles caught my eye. It was titled, “How to be a man of True Grit.” It was written by Chad Howse and boy did he nail it and exposed so much of what we are losing in this new culture. “When John Wayne bellowed his first lines in the movie True Grit, you knew that Mattie Ross had found the man to hunt down her father’s killer and bring him to justice. There was power in Wayne’s voice, though his words were few, and force in his

stature. And nothing would stop this man once he had a goal in his sights. Not another man, nor the law he was charged with upholding. We admire men with grit, without ever really knowing what it means to possess it. Grit, as a personality trait, isn’t just a synonym of persistence, toughness and ambition, but a culmination of them. And yet, grit is more. It’s everything mentioned, but with the addition of passion. Grit is a man passionate towards a long term goal and his resilience on the road to achieving it. Just as the great warrior- Alexander the Great, for example- had grit, so does the entrepreneur and the boxer who needs it to win the title and to keep it. Rocky Marciano had true grit, as did Joe Louis, Churchill and Napoleon had it in the spades. Grit separates the strong from the weak, the courageous for the fearful. Although grit is a focused man on a mission, it isn’t the hot shot rising to stardom, seeking fame. A man with true grit is stoic and silent in the face of his trials. He’s humble. To be a man of true grit, is to be a man of relentless purpose, focus and direction. To combine focus with perseverance and persistence, resilience and passion. Though your words may be few, they aren’t your voice, your actions are. To have focus and a purpose that moves us forward in life is important, so are values that secure us so we’re not swayed by the ebbs and flows of life, but stand firm

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 65

even amidst our greatest trials. A man can’t have grit if he doesn’t know his values. Nor can he move forward if he has no clue of the platform on which he stands. A man who values hard work, for example, won’t give in to laziness when success finds him. A man who values service, won’t become selfish when service turns difficult. Our values may evolve, but they shouldn’t change. They’re who we are. We’re tough now, and will bring that toughness into every area of our lives until we kick the bucket. A man who knows both where he stands, and where he’s going, is a man with true grit. To have both qualities is rare. If you ask someone what they’re values are, more often than not, they stumble, stutter and ask for an example. The same happens when you ask someone where they’re going and what they’re doing in life. The majority of us live on autopilot. We take what comes our way and we deal with it. Those with grit, however, make life deal with them. Indecision, fear and a lack of direction have no place in their hearts or minds. Purpose, focus, ambition and grit aren’t innate gifts, they’re habitual practices. Know where you’re going, and what your values are, by writing them down. Make them real. Grit is a grungy word. It’s harsh, sharp, stinging. You think of rocks and dirt and guns when it comes up in conversation. Grit isn’t descriptive of a man who lives in fear, but a man who faces his fears, and fights his demons. A warrior. A fighter. A man like Sue, in Johnny Cash’s A Boy Named Sue, when he sings, “My fist got hard and my wits got keen.” Quiet? Yes. Timid? No. A man with true grit fights. He fights the Resistance- all that holds him back from doing his work.

BIBLE verses

Be it laziness, fear, worry, others trying to bring him down, false pride, envy, hate or greed. He fights it daily. He’s at war every minute of every day, and he’s aware of this war. What good is it to fight once? We all know that, as Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do.” Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. As is grit. It isn’t a singular act, it isn’t even something done for a year, two years, or ten, it’s who we are every single day of our lives. As he concludes, Chad Howse asks this question: I wonder, do I have true grit? His answer: The answer can’t yet be delivered, as my battle is far from being over. I may have grit today, and yesterday, and the day before, but will I have it tomorrow? Time will tell. But I will. I’m sure of it. I’ve made my decision, drawn my line in the sand, looked my enemy in the eye, and I’m here to fight today, and I’ll be here to fight tomorrow. And so will you. How do I know? Well, my values are very real, and becoming all the more realer. They’re branded on my soul. I can’t escape them, nor would I ever want to. When I move forward, towards my place in the sun, I don’t leave them behind. They’re with me always. They’re who I am. And if for some reason I stray from them, I’m always reminded with a kick in the pants, or a slap in the face, that to remove myself from our duality, is to separate me, from me. I depend on them in struggle, and remain grounded by them in triumph. To be a man with true grit, then, is to be your values. To move forward with passion and tenacity. Don’t be proud of one battle won, be proud of being at war every day... and having done all, STAND.

Smokin Bob

SMOKIN BOB is an extremely impressive, very moderately framed bull that has unbelievable bone and is incredibly sound. He is square ended, big topped, heavy structured and pulled-apart in the most perfect kind of way, with all four feet facing the right direction. He is gentle natured, smooth polled and exceptionally hairy for a smoky bull.

SHOW.RITE TIP

ONE MAN’S OPINION

Dave shares about judges and how hard work pays off. BY DAVE GUYER, IL

Y

ou know when it comes to showing livestock we are at the mercy of one man’s opinion called “the judge”. We are not against a clock, we don’t have a score board, or any type of measuring device to determine a placing.

88 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

One judge makes a decision and there is no answer sheet to check and see if they had done it correct or not. I guess that’s why they call it an opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I am very opinionated as well, and I don’t always agree, and I might be one of those that would have done things different, but I wasn’t hired to judge. We are just coming out of the summer show season and you all have heard the stories of who won, who shouldn’t have won, or who should have won. Now with all due respect to the judge that was hired to do a job, we all would hope that person would be qualified and do a good job, but why is there “the stories” after the show. Now there are probably many opinions on how to make it better such as having a 2 or 3 judge panel to decide the placing. This process is used in many places in the cattle showring and also in other species showrings, but is this the answer to discrepancies in people’s opinions about the out come of a show, that will be for you to decide. Commonly with the panel it is harder to point a finger when the outcome is not exactly the way you thought it might be and with that there is usually less complaining. The reality is that we are not going to change anything overnight and without the willingness of officials to look at other options, it is going to stay just like it presently is. With all this being said bare with me as I get on

my soap box just for a minute. The person that is hired to judge the show merits the respect of us as exhibitors, spectators, or parents. If you don’t want the opinion of that judge you should stay home and not show, but if you go respect that judge's opinion. You may not like it sometimes but what are you going to do about it, it’s called competition. In this situation you pick your head up and go home, learn from it, make adjustments, work harder, and get ready for the next show. If you are one that comes home and thinks you should have done better and thinks that judge done you wrong... you might look in the mirror and see if there is anything you could have done different to better yourself, maybe in the selection process, daily care in your barn, or the feeding program of that project. A lot of times I see people disappointed after a show and are looking to put a finger on why they didn’t do better and the cold hard truth is that we sometimes need to look at our own management. I was asked one time “how many are good enough to win” and my response to that is “there are more than you can imagine that have the capability to win but it all falls in the arms of the caretaker”. Hard work and dedication equals reward. We may not like it but its the way the system works so I encourage you as a exhibitor, parent, or spectator to respect the opinions of all officials. If you feel very strong in trying to better a system or program and think that you have some good ideas then I encourage you to volunteer your time. Disappointment after the show shows me that someone cares. If your not disappointed after the show, you either won or don’t care. Trust me as a parent, this program makes our kids better adults and in today’s world we need better people that don’t have their hand out wanting something for nothing but rather are ready to earn it. Remember when it comes to your calf... the more you work the better they look, the better they look the more you want to work. Send me your ShowRite tip ideas. Calf season is open and in full swing... happy hunting and good luck at the fall shows!

ur names are Jenna and Kayla Frink and we are the twin daughters of Michael and Amy Frink. We also have a younger sister named Lauren. We are 16 years old and are juniors at Highland High School, where we are active in our FFA chapter, and members of NHS. We also play softball, basketball and track. We have been involved in 4-H for 7 years. Throughout our show career we have shown at the local, state and national levels. This year at our state fair our family was lucky enough to have both grand and reserve lamb. Our little sister Lauren also had the grand champion speckle. We have done well at state fair before but this year was especially special because we have never had both grand and reserve together. We would like to thank all the people who have helped us throughout our show career, especially our parents because without them we wouldn’t be nearly as successful. ▪

AUSTIN VIESELMEYER

Grand Champion Market Hog

M

BY AUSTIN VIESELMEYER

any times during the 2013 show season, I would rely upon my confirmation verse “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 – to help me calm down and focus. That was really hard for me to do in the Grand Champion Market Hog Drive at Colorado State Fair because “Wulfy” and I had such a unique bond that I wanted nothing more than for him to win his final show. I am very passionate about fitting and showing livestock. But this year especially, I’ve felt like I’ve been blessed with Wulfy. He is the fourth consecutive generation of a sow family that I’ve shown from Wolfe & Sons Show Pigs at Indianola, Nebraska. I showed his great grand dam – “Girly” – who was also the mother of Wolf Bones – Wulfy’s sire. I won’t forget the day we brought Wulfy home from the pig sale. When I carried him off the trailer, he wolfed like a dog and when I sat him down he strutted around the pen with his head held high and ears erect. I remember telling mom and dad – “I’m showing him and we should call him Wulfy since he wolfed like a dog, his sire’s name is Wolf Bones and Wolfe & Sons raised him.” Wulfy was so unique and seemed to have more personality than any other market hog I’ve shown. He seemed to truly look at you and he loved sugar candy, especially sour patch candies and gummy bears. Wulfy and I had a remarkable 2013 show season. Together we traveled over 3,500 miles in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming to 10 shows in which Wulfy was named Overall Grand or Reserve Champion six times and 4th overall once. We worked together so well as a

show team and I credit a lot of my success in showmanship to Wulfy even though we all know that it takes a lot of hard work and time put in at home too. Together we achieved grand or reserve champion showmanship honors in 7 of our 9 performances. Without a doubt winning senior showmanship at state fair my first year in that age division will be one of my most memorable moments this year. Winning the 2013 Colorado State Fair Market Hog show would not have been possible without the help and support from my family. Thanks Dad for picking Wulfy out and the time you spent cleaning pens, exercising and rinsing when both Alex and I couldn’t be at home to do it – Your help meant a lot to me. I owe a big thank you to my brother, Alex, for taking care of Wulfy every day I was gone – I couldn’t have done this without your help! I can’t say thank you enough to my mom for her feeding strategies, attention to detail, for believing that we could hold Wulfy for state fair and for expecting more than my best each and every time – You made us both better! I also want to thank Matt Wolfe, Wolfe & Sons Show pigs for his continued support and advice – Your customer service is second to none! I’m humbled by the generosity of Anadarko Petroleum – Your support of all junior livestock exhibitors in the state fair’s

junior livestock sale is greatly appreciated! A special thanks to the CSU & NJC Livestock Judging Teams for their outstanding help in the show ring. I also appreciate everything that Marlin Eisenach, Steven Vetter and Mick Livingston do at the state fair – All the little things you do make a huge difference! Thanks to Marlin Eisenach and Jeanne Robison for transitioning to a pedigree purebred show and weight declaration – Your perseverance was well worth it and there was certainly less stress on many families and their hogs. Finally I’d like to thank the Reid Family and The Showtimes Magazine – Your passion for youth and livestock exposition is second to none! ▪

am 18 years old senior at Churubusco High School, a 9 year 4H member, play football, and run track. I would like to attend a college and pursue an education in the agricultural field. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without their support, also the help of my good friend Austin Weber. ▪

A FEW RULES

I had to laugh thinking about a few family rules we had when I showed cattle in the late 70’s and early 80’s. One way I was able to get off the farm and enjoy some time with friends was through participating in 4-H cattle shows. I was the second of seven children and my father Jack took us to many cattle shows when I was young. When my older sister Carla turned 16 and could drive the truck and trailer, dad turned us free. Of course there were the basic rules; no speeding with the truck and trailer, come straight home after the show, make sure the truck is full of gas and don’t lose your little brother Tim. In addition to the basic guidelines of the road and the rules of the cattle show, there were few other rules that our dad often reminded us of before that truck and trailer left the Iowa farm. I believe most of them hold true today. BY: JOHN HINNERS

A few of Jack Hinners rules...

Res. Belted Galloway Jake Young

Make sure you have the health papers in the show box.

Stay by your cattle as there is work to be done.

Be prepared, stay clean, and be on time for your class.

Never argue.

Walk out of show ring with a smile on your face no matter how you place. Champion Shorthorn Braydon Poulson

Keep your eyes on the judge – your eyes should be on the judge or on your steer. We are here to show cattle, the carnival is off limits!

Address the judge with respect and a firm voice if you are asked a question. Get your steer or heifer out where the judge can see it, don’t get boxed in! Mind your own business and don’t gossip.

BROOKE EGBERT

Grand Champion Market Steer

M BY Brooke Egbert

y name is Brooke Egbert, I am 12 years old and starting Jr. High at New Knoxville Schools. Besides my first love of showing cattle, I play soccer and will be cheering for a basketball team this year. At my county fair I show swine projects. I have been showing cattle since I was four years old and have been showing at the state fair for four years also. Winning the state fair was an amazing experience. It was a dream of mine when I began showing to win the Ohio State Fair. It felt surreal to me for weeks. It’s hard to describe the emotions that went through me when Mr. Schaake took his hat off and shook my hand. I was overwhelmed with pride and tears of

5th Overall Breeding Steer Brandee Painter

joy. I worked very hard over the last year to get to that point. Winning made the early mornings, the hours in the barn, and the late nights, worth every moment. Standing in the final drive of the show is an accomplishment in itself. I’d like to congratulate my fellow exhibitors who were standing with me. There is not one feeling that can describe what you are thinking. Is it hope, fear, a sense of accomplishment for just making it that far? To me, I knew I did the best I could and gave everything I had. Of course I could not have done it without the support of my family and friends. Without the support and help of my Mom, Dad, and my sister Ryleigh, my dream and goal of winning the state fair would never have come true. I’d also like to thank Brian and Dru Goettemoeller, Wade Rodgers, Dillon, Jeremy, Kyle, Nick, and the Streitmatter boys for helping me all winter. A special thanks my Dad and Kyle for taking the time to take me to all the shows. Each show is full of memories and lessons. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough to express the gratitude I have for all of them. Even though the fair is over, life is returning to normal this memory I will hold close to me forever. ▪

TYLER COLEMAN

I

Grand Champion Owned Polled Female BY TYLER COLEMAN, CA

’m Tyler Coleman and I exhibited the Grand Champion Polled Heifer (owned) and Reserve Grand Champion Horned Heifer (owned) at the 2013 NJHE. My experience of the 2013 National Junior Hereford Expo in Kansas City, MO was pretty much awesome. This was my first Hereford Junior Nationals! Actually- just my second Junior National experience ever! The week prior, I exhibited my Angus heifers at the National Junior Angus Show right here at the American Royal Complex, as well! Which, I had a really great time and successful show. So- here I am exhibiting at two major shows back-to-back, and a long way from home. Where is home? Well, home is in California! I am a freshman at Central Catholic High School, and enjoy hunting, fishing, wake boarding, snowboarding, horseback

156 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

riding, tennis, golf, and ranch work. High school sports season has begun and I am on the freshman football team, this year. My family and I live in Modesto, California, which is located in the Central Valley area of Northern California. It is halfway between Sacramento and Fresno, and approximately about 90 miles east of San Francisco. This area of the valley is rich in farmland, which consists of many dairies, poultry barns, walnuts, almonds, corn silage, and pasture land to name a few. Unfortunately, more land is being converted to permanent crop these days than pasture, however beef cattle are still very prominent throughout the area. My family and I enjoy traveling and working on the ranch together. Luckily, both my parents were raised in agricultural families and have kept the same family values of appreciating the land. My dad exhibited Angus cattle throughout his junior years, and has inspired me towards the cattle. My parents have always encouraged my sister and I with our hobbies, sports, academics, and livestock. Over the last couple years, it has been increasingly been getting harder to find a balance between school, sports and my livestock. I have found life is definitely about choices! I love ranch life, and the people that I have had the opportunity to work with. This past summer was just incredible. It was

filled with so many new experiences. I am very thankful for having had these opportunities to meet so many great people. My show ring experience at the NJHE was really life changing. People didn’t really know who I was, or where I came from. I showed two really great females that the judge appreciated, and I received the honor of exhibiting both of these females! When this all happened, it was like “wow” that’s cool! He picked my Kinsey heifer for “Reserve!” Then, I had to go right back in for Polled Champion. I didn’t know what he was going to do. I know he liked a few of the other females in the line up, and they were all very nice animals. Then, “WHAMMO” he picked Addison for Grand Champion! It was unreal. I think, I was pretty shocked and maybe even still am! I am extremely grateful that my parents have given me this opportunity to experience this life, and everything that it entails! I have learned so much from so many people over the last few years. I know that without their help and guidance, I wouldn’t be the person I am. I love this industry- Agriculture is my families life. It doesn’t matter, if I’m helping out with our cattle, orchards, vineyards, or even remembering the stories that my grandpa would tell me about farming. I love being part of Agriculture, raising and showing my cattle, and meeting great people around the U.S. ▪

NELSON ENGLAND Grand Champion Market Steer BY Nelson England

M

beyond the backdrop

y name is Nelson England. I am a freshman at Iowa State University studying Animal Science leaning toward being a Nutritionist. I have shown for over ten years ranging from sheep, pigs, but mainly sticking to steers. Winning the Illinois State Fair was truly a dream come true. I have always dreamt all summer long of winning the state fair every year that I can remember, and all the hard work finally paid off. It was truly the best feeling anyone can ever imagine receiving the final slap in the overall drive. If you looked close, you could probably see myself shaking because I was so nervous, but once I was selected, it was a mixture of emotions that overcame me. I was not only happy for myself, but my family as well. My family had worked toward this day since my sister (26) first started showing. My parents are out checking the calves daily reassuring me that I am just stressing over nothing. Then there is my brother (23) who is out in the barn at 4:30 every morning and putting the calves out at midnight that night with me. I truly could not have achieved this win or any win without the help and support from my family. Showing livestock really does bring families together, and it serves as a time to bond. My family is the prime example of this. We do not go on vacations; we go to the Illinois State Fair, and it just so happened that this year’s state fair was a dream come true. ▪

Quiet Woman Cattle Company Jeff working on a custom lariat basket center during the 2013 National Junior Hereford Expo in Kansas City, Missouri.

is taking the livestock industry by storm with their custom lariat baskets.

BY LISA REID (INTERVIEW WITH JEFF MYERS)

I

STAMPED, WRAPPED, ROCKIN' A WHOLE NEW STYLE

n a cookie cutter world, it is refreshing when you see something that is unique and out of the ordinary. Located out of Fallon, Nevada, Quiet Woman Cattle Company specializes in custom lariat baskets. The Showtimes was introduced to owner, Jeff Myers, and his partner, Rebecca King, at the 2013 National Junior Hereford Expo this past summer where they custom made award baskets for the show. Throughout the week, Jeff could be found at his booth busy doing leatherwork for baskets for multiple farms and ranches. Instead of shutting up shop at night, he would return to his hotel room and labor away assembling his masterpieces. The finished products were personalized, high quality craftsmanship, that is a step outside of the run of the mill. QWCC has been in business for four years. After being a cowboy in Montana for around 25 years, 13 broken bones, and multiple concussions, Jeff settled in Nevada after traveling there for a friend. It is from there that Jeff's creative intuition sparked. He was the first person to create custom leather designs for the centers of lariat rope baskets. He starts with a circle of leather, then, using multiple tools, he works various

designs in the material. He has done everything from Ranch/Farm logos to the crest of the State of Nevada to honor the outgoing Nevada Governor, Jim Gibbons. After the centerpiece is complete, Jeff circles it with lariat ropes. Single or double ropes are most commonly used, but he can use as many as is required to achieve a desired size of basket. Each finished basket is equipped with a backing that allows it to be hung on the wall. In addition to his business, Jeff has taught his handiwork at three different colleges. He believes in paying it forward. From his work at the NJHE, Jeff was asked to do the awards for the Indiana State Fair cattle show. His baskets have been used at the Western Nugget Nationals, local shows, Cowboy Poetries, and as commissions for museums such as the C.M Russell Museum and the Montana Western Heritage Center. In addition to custom lariat baskets, Jeff creates custom table runners, cases for Bibles and tablets, and tin or leather ornaments. Jeff is a devoted Cowboy Christian and would like to thank the Blood Bought Cowboy Church in Fallon, Nevada for all of their support with the QWCC. â–Ş SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 177

"Success comes in a lot of ways, but it doesn't come with money and it doesn't come with fame. It comes with having a meaning in your life, doing what you love and being passionate about what you do. That's having a life of success. When you have the ability to do what you love, love what you do and have the ability to impact people. That's having a life of success."

all levels vying for top honors at shows across the nation.

recent Facebook post confirms Herefords have done it again climbing the ladder of success at another state fair. From Maryland to California, and many stops in between, Herefords are reigning supreme at state fairs across the nation. Each year there seems to be more and more Herefords in the headlines, and the 2013 state fair season is no exception. The supreme drive showcases the best of the best and according to many judges the supreme champion is the best representative of that particular breed. While everyone walks away from the supreme line up a winner, it is the ultimate accomplishment for the exhibitor and their breed to be named supreme champion over all. Whether it is a panel of judges or one judge’s opinion, the supreme title is not one that is easily obtained when you consider the steep competition in all breeds on

This summer the American Hereford Association (AHA) and National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) hosted more than 650 Hereford youth and their families from 40 states in Kansas City, Mo., as 1,213 head of Herefords competed at the 2013 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). Many of the champions that were slapped in Kansas City went on to be named supreme champion at their respective state fairs. This says a lot for not only the quality of cattle competing at the JNHE, as well as the quality of young exhibitors and the strength of the Hereford breed. Trent Ray, Abingdon, Ill., was one of the top contenders in Kansas City winning reserve grand champion polled

"I felt that starting at the ground with a big foot and heading up with clean joints on a nice bone size. That was the foundation of a female that was deep bodied and well balanced with a smooth shoulder, plenty of top and a wide pin set. I really appreciated the width and depth she had as you viewed her from behind and coupled that with a pretty attractive front end. This heifer in short is a BREED CHANGER. One of the best I have seen in her breed. That is why she was Supreme Female. In that lineup she was at the top of her breed. Congrats to the young exhibitor that lead her, and I understand raised her, keep up the good work." Thank you, Bob Adcock 2013 Iowa State Fair Jr. Breeding Beef Judge

TRENT RAY 2013 ILLINOIS STATE FAIR SUPREME CHAMPION FEMALE

female honors. Ray’s heifer, Chez Strawberry Wine ET 204Z, later won a tough state fair junior Hereford show in Illinois and brought home the supreme banner. It was the same success story for Payton Vogel, Hartley, Iowa, with his champion bred-and-owned heifer at the 2013 JNHE. MAV Cotton’s Blessing 221Z was later named supreme champion at the

Iowa State Fair, which is the first time for a Hereford heifer since the state fair’s first supreme drive in the late 1990s. The quality of Hereford cattle has not gone unnocticed. Hereford breeders also remember the 2012 JNHE in Grand Island, Neb., when owned show judge, Eldon Krebs, asked the audience to give the champion drive exhibitors a standing ova-

tion. He said, “I’ve judged a lot of shows. I’ve judged a lot of breed events, and I’ve never seen this many good heifers under one roof.” He also added, “This is an awesome set of livestock — I don’t care what breed it is.” Why all the success for the whitefaces and the increased demand for Hereford genetics? “The big driving force behind the current popularity of Hereford cattle is the commercial demand past the showring,” says Jack Ward, AHA chief operating officer and director of breed improvement. Today the Hereford breed is poised to provide as much value to the commercial industry as any other breed with its combination advantages of fertility, feed efficiency, good disposition and an end product that will complement PAYTON VOGEL 2013 IOWA STATE FAIR SUPREME CHAMPION FEMALE

"The Polled Hereford female we used for Supreme Champion at the Illinois State Fair fit our ideal parameter for frame, muscle, and broad cow look. Hereford breeders have done an excellent job keeping the cattle real by using all the lasted technology and common sense in their breeding decisions.

188 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

The Illinois State Fair was one of the most competitive junior heifer shows we have been ask to judge. The quality of the show was deep with an outstanding set of young 4-H breeding beef exhibitors who will be tomorrow’s leaders. " Kevin & Sheila Jensen 2013 Illinois State Fair Jr. Breeding Beef Judges

a vast array of quality beef programs across the country. Helping with this progress has
been the AHA’s Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR®) program. Now 11 years old, the program has helped the AHA and Hereford breeders build a database that documents the breed’s strengths. More and more Hereford breeders continue to go above status quo and submit ultrasound data, body condition scores, udder scores and cow weights, which all add to the integrity and accuracy of the AHA database. Hereford registrations were up more than 8% during the AHA’s last fiscal year. This is the largest increase in more than 50 years. Hereford breeders also continue to experience a dramatic increase in production sale prices while reports of private-treaty sales continue to outpace the previous year reports. Hereford bull prices have doubled in the last 10 years — from $2,304 in 2002 to $4,671 in 2012. At last count, nine state fairs have reported a Hereford winning the supreme title during the last month and a half. “It has really been exciting to hear the success that the junior members have had over the past few months in the showring,” Ward adds. “This success can be directly linked to the commitment that breeders and junior members have placed on selecting cattle that are fundamentally sound and yet have the right amount of muscle, bone and performance.”

All young Hereford exhibitors deserve a standing ovation for their accomplishments in and out of the ring this summer. The Hereford breed has tremendous pride in the National Junior Hereford Association members and the families behind the organization. “It is so much more than the showring and the supreme banners,” Ward summarizes. “It is quality cattle and quality kids growing into industry leaders from their participation in programs like the NJHA.” ▪ SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 THE SHOWTIMES 189

MADDY UDELL

From being in the ring to standing on the sidelines taking pictures, there truly is nothing better than life at a stock show. BY: MADDY UDELL, IA

"

he Handshake the moment we all live for. I think we can all agree that when that judge comes to shake your hand and tells you that you won the show it truly is one of the best feelings in the world. Well I certainly think so anyway, which is why showing cattle has become such an enormous pert of my life. From the first time I lead a feeder calf in the ring at the Plymouth County Fair when I was four years old, I was hooked. Ever since my life has truly revolved around it, from early mornings at the show to late nights in the barn if it involves show cattle, count me in. My hobbies outside of show cattle include photography, helping with our sale, and spending time with family and friends. I am currently a senior in high school and am involved in FCCLA, DECA, 4-H, and FFA. I have one brother, Mitchell, who is 21 years old and a junior at Iowa State University. In my free time I enjoy photography, mostly of livestock, and plan to become a professional livestock photographer someday. Next year I plan to go to either Kansas State or Oklahoma State University to be an agriculture-communications major. I also enjoy creating ads and logos and created all of our ads for

our pasture sale this fall. I fell in love with show cattle at an early age. I started showing feeder calves when I was about four years old and have since competed at local, state, and national levels. I would have to say my biggest accomplishment thus far would be winning the Foundation Simmental Show in Denver this year. Even though I have had a lot of success in the show ring it will never compare to the friends and memories I have made in the livestock industry. The things I have learned from the livestock industry will definitely last a lifetime. This summer I went

to four different breed’s junior nationals and learned so many things about different breeds and how they do things. Each one is truly a completely different experience and I am so grateful to have gotten to experience them. I showed at three of them and then for the fourth I had the wonderful opportunity to intern with Legacy Livestock Imaging and learn from one of the best photographers in the livestock industry, Heidi Anderson. I would have to say my favorite show ring memory was getting Reserve and Fifth Overall breeding heifer at our state fair. One of my dreams is to win the Iowa State Fair and to get that close is truly amazing, and yet so humbling at the same time. When I started showing I would never have imagined I would accomplish some of the things I have. From getting last in class at our county fair my first year of 4-H to slowly trying to improve every year I can say I am very proud of how far we have come inside and outside of the show ring. Showing has also changed me as a person. When I first started showing I was a very shy little girl who wouldn’t talk to most people. The livestock industry

214 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

has taught me how to go up to almost anyone and have a conversation with them. The livestock industry has also taught me other things like hard work, dedication, and the pride in a job well done, because when that judge shakes your hand you know that it was all worth it and you can’t wait to start over for the next show or the next year of shows. Showing cattle is an enormous magnificent part of my life and it always will be. The friends I have made will last a lifetime and I don’t know what I would do with out them. From being in the ring to standing on the sidelines taking pictures, there truly is nothing better than life at a stock show. ▪

Just because the show is over and you've made sale doesn't mean you should stop cleaning your stall out. Still get to the barn to feed your calf the same time you do every day. If you normally feed at 6:30am, don't feed your calf at noon just because you made sale.

EIGHT

Keep your stall area respectable for those who stall in your spot after you.

ADVERTISING DEADLINE AVAILABLE IN PRINT

JANUARY 5, 2014 The first issue of 2014 will be distributed every day during the National Western Stock Show, Sioux Falls, and the Fort Worth Stock Show!

If you use someone else's wheel barrow more than once (or to clean out all your bedding) offer to dump it and return it to their stall.

SIX

FIVE

Be sure to keep your calf watered (especially during hot summer shows).

Always thank the show management for putting on the show. Know what your number is in the sale order and have your calf ready so you don't slow the sale down or miss your spot.

TWO

Don't leave your calf tied in his stall for several days without exercising. Be sure to walk your calf every day. It's a great time to have your mom, dad, brother, sister or friend clean out your stall as well.

ONE

Before anything else, wash and break down your calf as soon as the show is over and photos are taken - no exceptions.

judge’s thoughts

IOWA CHAMPION

Jim Williams shares his thoughts on judging the 2013 Iowa State Fair Market Steer Show.

T

BY JIM WILLIAMS, TX

he 2013 Iowa State Fair Market Steer Show was an outstanding event, as I expected it to be. First class in all the areas that make for a great show. There were not only great crossbreds shows, but more impressive specific breed champions as well. At many steer shows across the midwest the breed steers will be a little behind the crossbreds. That was not the case here in Des Moines.

in his structure and movement. I liked him the first few steps in the ring that afternoon. Really, he was a pretty clear winner.

The champion steer, a Division II Crossbred, was a very impressive steer that had a combination of quality. He was well balanced, very muscular in his shape and thickness, and was a beautiful handling steer. He had a lot of of depth, very upheaded with a big hip and stifle. He was also very sound

The 2013 show was a lot deeper than last year’s show and the young Iowa 4-H ’ers did a real good job showing and exhibiting their steers. The show was a first class event. ■

218 THE SHOWTIMES SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

The next four placings were very close. The Maine steer that ended up being Reserve was also a nice heavy muscled steer that had good balance. In the rear quarter, he wasn’t quite as heavy or deep in his muscle as the Champion. He wasn’t quite so extended or clearn throughout his neck and front end, but still a real high quality individual. He fit well with the Champion as far as type and kind.
