Urban Edge
Preservation + Protection + Limitation + Insertion
This project describes 3 lines of control in creating an Urban Green Belt. Urban and experimental agriculture would further help the residents of Xochimilco to depend on Chinampa agriculture and supported activities. Increasing and structuring water would create an edge as well as new vision on water front development with the purpose of aqua culture. Lastly, development of new urban cultural communities would turn out to be a platform for Xochimilco to preserve its historic culture. Thus, agriculture, flooding and cultural communities form a regularized edge for preserving Xochimilco as heritage site.
4
Academic Work
Lines of control are essential between different territories in order to keep their identities and functions intact. Such lines are especially required to demarcate special territories preserved lands or heritage sites to keep them unharmed and ecology safeguarded. Xochimilco is one such site which needs lines of control to keep away increasing urbanization from the south of Mexico City. The city requires these regularized lines to protect itself from further distortion.

Master of Urban Design - Urban Edge
Xochimilco is one of the boroughs in Mexico City which is currently undergoing vast urbanization. This emplacement of people is majorly from other parts of country as well as neighboring states. Xochimilco is most susceptible for this vast urbanization only due to its location. Mountains are filled with the favellas which are small cities in themselves.
6
Academic Work
Pollution, crime and safety are the most vigourous difficulties of this area.
Xochimilco is called the second lung of the Mecico City. It has been on the verge of depletion of its natural reserves. This place forms the biggest green area in the city. Due to urbanization, the preserved lands are been enchroched and slowly the changes in the landscape has taken place. These changes are devastating the flora and fauna of Xochimilco. The major lakes and cananls are drying up and there is hardly any system of reconstruction of these waters. Portfolio of Shreejit Modak

Master of Urban Design - Urban Edge
Deigo Reviera, explains Xochimilco very well through this beautiful mural. Xochimilco was one of the production centers to Mexico City or the Center in Aztec period. This place was characterized by the special form of farming called Chinampas. These were the floating or partially floating gardens. Mexico City was built as an island on lake Texcoco. Xochimilco provided the basic need to this center such as food and flowers for worship.
Xochimilco is the most serene place in Mexico City. It is the home of vast number of flora and fauna. Many migratory birds are seen in this area. The boats or Trajineras were the only form of transportation during the times of Aztecs. Today Trajineras are used more commonly as tourist attraction and entertainment. Overall, Xochimilco has become more of a tourist spot rather than a Culture which needs to be preserved. Portfolio of Shreejit Modak
Xochimilco acts as one of the major entry points for urbanization. Due to its location and topography it is the most vulnarable area in Mexico City for illegal migration. It comes under UNESCO heritage areas for preservation of Chinampas, landscape and culture.
8
Academic Work
Due to the urbanization; UNESCO and the Delegation of Xochimilco are in argument of taking away the heritage demarcation of Xochimilco. According to UNESCO, urbanization needs to be taken out from the heritage demarcation, whereas at the same time, Delagation counter is in disagreement about the removal of current inhabitants who are staying in that area over 10 years.
On the other hand, preserved land of Xochimilco is separated very impressively from the east and the west side due to the demarcation of green spaces, gardens, eco parks and the surrounding development patterns. Thus, it creates a continuous formalized line which discontinue only towards the southern part. Portfolio of Shreejit Modak
The Design intervens these already existing characters of urbanization, water (canals) and Chinampa argriculture in creating an edge. This edge would help in formalizing the line for the demarcated preserved lands and also stop the illegal migration from entering the heritage zone.
9
Master of Urban Design - Urban Edge
The formalized line will be created through expansion of canal system and creating aqua edge between the protected farming culture and newly developed communities for the locales.

Production and Logistics
Xochimilco was historically a highly productive agricultural land with unique methods of farming, called chinampas. The pre-hispanic crop system produced a wide variety of crops based on integrated nutrient management from lake sediments, aquatic plants, crops and live-stock residues; as well as on integrated management including irrigation, waste decomposition and fishing. Strong land use pressures are currently affecting the existence of chinampas, including demographic pressure and the introduction of industrialized systems. Xochimilco’s production mode is changing. Because of water pollution and urbanization, the area of chinampas has decreased a lot from 1989 to 2006. These changes involve the loss of the lacustrine environment, which integrates water, trees and wetlands. The production types of Xochimilco is also decreasing from the Hispanic times. Currently, although greenhouses make more profit, this type of agriculture is not sustainable because of the portable water stress in Mexico City.

Redevelopment of the Benito Juarez Airport gives the city of Mexico an opportunity to cultivate a huge mass of land into a new center of advancement. Thinking on a city level, this chunck of undeveloped mass now gives an opening to create a hub for commercial development and its supportive communes. Reversed City see the opportunity to establish different nodes within this enclave and connect them through transit stations. The Reversed City takes an opportunity for an urban level green connection for the City. It acts as a connector as well as a continuous stretch for the landscape to flow from the ecological reserve to other parts of the city.

Interpreted Walls Allowing the Greens inside
Inspired by the walled city in Medieval times, the proposal turns this historic precedent to the contemporary enclave inside out, forming abrupt walls for the adjacent enclaves and allowing the center of our enclave to complete a network of green space spanning the city from the north to the south. The result is a network of public spaces at a scale never before available in Mexico City.

The two “walls” adjoining other enclaves’ act like edges. The aggregation of building types selected makes them porous and solid at the same time. These two separators emerge from the landscape and at moments become the part of greens. This enclave creates an opportunity in bringing and linking the two main large eco-parks next to the site, this creates a larger system of connected landscapes making the city follow the sustainable culture which then ends at Lake Texcoco.

Master of Urban Design - Reversed City
The design of the Reverse City is composed of two major vehicular connectors with the ring road that goes all around other enclaves. It gets divided into tiers according to the density designated to every function. This helps in making the internal circulation of the Reverse City completely pedestrian. The landscape designed becomes the part of the architecture and sometimes emphasizes the language of architecture types used into the design. Taking the sustainable move from linking of greens, the retention ponds and the mounts designed help in water purification and directing the flow towards Lake Texcoco.

Mexico City is made of many enclaves and some of them could also be called as the smaller cities in the larger context. These enclaves are predominated by specific types which then creates typologies establishing the urban fabric of the City. This study of types and typologies was to produce a catalog of frequent and recurrent building types and urban elements observed. This catalog consisted of housing types, civic and commercial buildings, street furniture, kiosks and all other uniquely urban categorized masses. Later in the study, the types were compared taking scales, areas and income into consideration. Taking those further, using those elements, a 400’x400’ block was developed. This block was to be designed in order to see the new aggregation of types together in a block. One had to interrogate formal, spatial, material and organizational cues that would prompt new spatial relationships between the constituent elements. This study was created in figure ground as well as in perspective. Figure ground was used to see the organizational patterns and relationships between the elements used. Perspective gave a view of actual usable spaces meant for different occasions and uses.

market as Magnet exchange as Catalyst Revival of Old Barter Spine

Academic Work
The Proposal recovers the role of La Viga canal as cultural corridor, a spine that transverses a rich collection of neighborhoods with strong cultural traditions and a diverse social base. By carefully selecting a subset of public markets along the spine, and activating one at a time, the proposal reveals dormant relationships between these civic infrastuctures and public life along the spine. The investments in these nodes of local activity is complemented by interventions in the public realm through programming and the incorporation of different landscape typologies aong the line. For the cultural observer, the legacy of the La Viga canal is still present in the urban landscapes along the Spine. The water landscpes that the Canal National carries in the south, churches and small monuments, commercial areas, street names and the rich tree canopy in some sections on the north, they all hint at former adjacencies and relationships today lost amisdst the busy throughfare. The public markets along the spine are also a living memory of the system; for decades, LA Viga canal served as a conduit for the delivery of fresh produce from the fertile Chinampas of Xochimilco and Chalco.

The 4 public markets where selected on a careful observation according to urban, greens ratio, accessibilities and congestion studies. These 4 markets were taken as initiators in activating the La Viga canal again as a historic legacy, but with modern infrastructures and taking the needs of the communities they were in. Activating these 4 public markets as initiatives would later place a mark for other markets to develop. This idea would overall develop the strategy of connecting the Spine from Centro Historico to Xochimilco.

Vertical Grounds for Play Mercado Hueso Periferico is adjacent to Canal National, one of the few moments in which water still renders visible in the City, and lies in close proximity to Mercado de Cuemanco, the largest flower market in Latin America. The area has also an important presence of institutions as UNAM and the Institute of Marine, and a robust residential fabric. Despite the diverse composition of the area, the market is on the verge of deterioration after decades of disinvestment, and the changing patterns of consumption of the residents. The design intervention defines a prototype of Vertical Garden that displays alternative models of Urban Agriculture, building on the green campaign raised by the residents of this area to satisfy the need of accessible fresh local produce. The design acts as a vertical container of public spaces and programs including the market area, cafes, a day-care center, and an artist gallery for the community to invite creative minds to engage the art in combination with the nature. Together, the whole proposal brings back the character of public spaces with linkage of series of green open spaces and connection with the canal.

Public Life and Urban Space Demographic expansion, urban sprawl and the fear of crime have resulted in the disintegration of the City - traditional public spaces now have reduced significance in the public life. Interaction within public spaces has been replaced by interaction through placeless invisible links of radio, television, video and the internet. The majority of inhabitants of Mexico City stay at home rather than use the city in their free time. They do so as a conscious effort to free themselves from the urban hubbub, but also very importantly, as a result of unequal provision of open and green spaces as well as entertainment and cultural facilities. A trend affecting public life in Mexico City is associated with the increased privatization and commercialization of public spaces. Face to face interaction now mostly takes place in the new spaces of shopping malls and transport hubs. The amount of public space provided by the colonial plazas is becoming increasingly residential in comparison to the spaces created with premediated functions in mind the most common of which is comsumption. To an important extent, this predetermines the kinds of interaction and activities that take place within them. In addition, the fact that these spaces are characterized by constant surveillance and regulation of access means that they come to reinforce the rise of social exclusion in the city.

Doan Brook is one of the five greater “bluestone” brooks found in the Cuyahoga County of Northeast Ohio. As the Doan Brook watershed was developed over the last 200 years, urbanization of Doan Brook and its watershed has harmed water quality in the brook in many ways altering the natural water/ air balance significantly. According to EPA’s 2013 air pollution report, the Lake, Cuyahoga, and Lorain Counties have the highest emissions of directly emitted PM2.5 and/or PM2.5 precursors in the area upwind and contributes significantly to the violating monitors in Cleveland.Cuyahoga County has violating monitors and has been recommended as nonattainment by Ohio. Lake County emits the greatest amount of directly emitted PM2.5 and precursors while the Eastlake Plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating company has the highest combined emissions of any source in the Cleveland area.

An Institutional Abode for Dancers
India has witnessed vast variety of cultures and traditions which are passed on from generations to generations. Indian classical dance forms are one among those art forms which are culturally preserved heritage of India. But, in present day scenario dance has gained a commercial status. With the advent ofvarious other western dance forms arriving, Indian Classical dances have become more or less a national heritage “to be preserved but, very few to pass on to. Hence the importance of dance oriented spaces has diminished. Thus, there is a need to recreate the diminishing character of dance oriented architecture thereby reviving the Indian classical dance forms to propagate it as a divine ritual and not a mere form of entertainment.

HOTEL
BANQ
The proposed 5 Star Business Hotel is designed to meet the requirements of today’s urban population with high-end luxury and advanced services. The site is majorly divided with a looping vehicular circulation into two major built masses of hotel building and banquet with subordinate functions. The internal planning and circulation of both the masses is maintained keeping formal, informal, prublic, private and service areas separate. Architecttural design is embellished with double height lobbies for grandeur, huge porticos and welcoming entrances, inviting pool areas and gracious landscapes as well as chic lounges. In addition to the theme based restaurants with 24 hours cafe including rejuvinating spa and health club, this project has 10 floors of very comfortable suites and guets rooms. Highly advanced services and well designed service areas are the core to this design in working of the project.

Art Place and Museum Complex the Free Spririt of Festivity and Freedom of Artistry
The site given is the Cultural Hub of Mumbai, which celebrates the biggest cultural and artist festival of Mumbai “Kala Ghoda Festival”. In designing the site the concept of ‘Free spirit of Festivity and Freedom of Artistry’ comes impromt to. Designing not just a museum, but also a cultural ghetto and not just displaying artistry but craeting a vibe of festivity would create a culture in whole. The clusters of masses is dedicated for specific functions, which would be briged with the free spirit of public spaces; lined and embedded with the works of artists and public. it would be a place to explore one’s inner self and not just observe the works of others and get inspired.

Site Analysis
78
Professional Work
The new design for the playground adviced in making the playground more accessible and inviting to all age groups. The design infused the natural curves of the site and evolved into an continuous flowing patterns of landscape and hardscape. As one of the sustainable measures; swaled planting beds which featured durable, non-invasive plantings, majorly natives and that capture and absorb storm water run off, were incorporated in the design.

I worked under the leadership of one of the associate landscape Architects, Ar. Joan Furlong and Junior Landscape Ar. Breana Parian. I was majorly involved in the C.D. part of the project. I also helped in preparing preliminary presentation to be shown to NYC Parks Dept.
Project Limit Raised subway tracks above Stillwell Ave
Shaded seating area with game tables
C
The new design for the playground adviced in making the playground more accessible and inviting to all age groups. The design infused the natural curves of the site and evolved into an continuous flowing patterns of landscape and hardscape. As one of the sustainable measures; swaled planting beds which featured durable, non-invasive plantings, majorly natives and that capture and absorb storm water run off, were incorporated in the design.

S
The scope of the project was to reconstruct Lafayette Park located at intersection of Benson Avenue and Bay 43rd street in the borough of Brooklyn. MKW+Associates were heading the Landscape Architecture aspect of the project.

Facade Preservation
Landmarks preservation project 911 Walton Avenue comes under Landmarks Preservation District. This project aimed of facade and decorative cornice and parapet preservation. Working as a project manager, I had tp prepare throughly detailed construction drawings of this project to present in from of Landmarks Preservation Committee for approval. In this process, I worked very closely with Landmarks preservationits and contactors to prepare the required drawings and mockup samples for implementation. In doing so, many site surveys were done, every peice of cornice was measured and represented in drawings and samples of bricks and mortar was presented to LPC. This project is in the process of approval and getting a permit.

ADA Ramp
Landmarks Preservation Project 884 West End Avenue comes under Landmarks Preservation District. This project aimed for designing an ADA Ramp infront on the building at the main entry. As this structure come under LPC, we had to be very careful in mainting the historic fabric of the structure and coming up with a suitable ramp design. In doing so, being a project manager on this project, I came up with a concrete and granite ramp with steel railing. Granite was chosen for the top and sides of the ramp to match the excisting granite steps. Steel railing was chosen to be black in color to match the existing entry door and fenestrations.

Granite was chosen for the top and sides of the ramp to match the excisting granite steps. Steel railing was chosen to be black in color to match the existing entry door and fenestrations.

The project was conceptualized to create a landmark in the Kalyan City. It went through various stages of discussion with the client and finally got down to a high-end high-rise residential building design with shopping center at the lower floors.
0.6M/W C.P.
The design of the building was inspired from the free flow of the river running nearby. The planning of the high-rise building was designed according to the wind flow path. Thus the final massing gained the character of intersecting curves.

Alibaugh is a perfect location for a small vacation home with minimalistic approach. This was an interior design project. Working under Interior Designer Salil Vedak, gave a new outlook towards suburban yet contemporary design. The house was designed for a young engineer bachelor wanting a home away from the city, yet contemporary and to be designed on open concept ideologies.

This structure creates a new landmark just on the other side of Yamuna River, opposite Taj Mahal. Inspired from the Char-Bagh concept from the Gardens of Taj Mahal, this structure is designed based on gardens of paradise layered vertically in seven stages. These layers are designed with the essetial elements of water canals which converge into a water falls from the top most layer to the bottom most. The design focused on redevelopment of the abandoned site into an artist hub, with cafes and local market at the lower areas. Urban farming was taken into consideration into this design, as an initiative for development of landscapes. New housing typology was introduced in combination with urban farming, where artists would also be involved in creating a new vibe of artistic neighborhood.
