Endosulfan – USA Registration Status
Endosulfan Not Banned in USA
Industry has voluntarily withdrawn its registrations, which will be completed by 2016. The phase out plan became final on 10, Nov 2010. Industry’s decision was based on commercial considerations. It resulted from a requirement for cost prohibitive product testing for many pesticides driven by a congressional mandate.

The volume of endosulfan used in the USA is small in comparison to the remainder of the world because the target insects are different. Replacements are not available in the USA for all uses of endosulfan. The industry agreed to continue to supply endosulfan for specified uses in the USA over the next 6 years until 2016. During this time growers will attempt to find replacements.
USA and the Stockholm Convention y y y y
The USA has not ratified the Convention. It does participate as an Observer and contributes financially to the efforts of the Convention. Not being a Party limits USA’s influence in the POP process. It has expressed concerns over adherence to the provisions of the Convention relative to the decision process.
