“And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Beth-el.” Genesis 35:15 Bethel means ‘house of God.’ This was not a place made of brick and mortar, but a place where God was pleased to meet with one of His chosen ones. Yet, what is a house without the head of the house present. This presence is from El-bethel, ‘the God of the house,’ Genesis 35:7. This is a place of blessing because it was here that God first revealed Himself unto Jacob when on His way to find a wife, and it is the place where God met him on the way back, reassuring him of His grace and mercy. Yet, it was also a place of sorrow and trial. Here it was that Jacob buried Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse. She died much lamented. Yet, it is here that God renewed the covenant with Jacob. As the God and executor of His covenant, God declares Himself as God Almighty, strong and mighty, accomplishing all that He promised for the salvation of His people. He is the all-sufficient, ever effectual sovereign God, who cannot lie, and is faithful to grant to His own all that He has promised, Titus 1:2, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” Two things are promised; that he should be the father of a great nation, and that he should be the master of a good land. These two promises had a spiritual significance, which Jacob had some notion of, though not so clear and distinct as we now have. Christ is the promised Seed, and heaven is the promised land, and those for whom Christ came, lived, died and rose again are the House of God! Hebrews 3:6-“But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.”
