TO BE OR NOT TO BE SMART The smart city idea started as an incentive to catalyse the working of the city. However it came across as an expression of impatient capital. The commercial motivation corrupts the very entity it is supposed to serve. The problem with the notion of smart cities is that it sets up the environment to be fashioned in a single image; it’s not about culture specificity. The only way to get people involved in the city imagination is to respond to local needs and aspirations.
SMART GREAT CITY QUESTIONING SMART
Here we try to not just reinterpret, but completely reivent the idea of smart cities. A great city is not a spatial entity with sociological outcomes; It is a sociological entity with spatial outcomes. The term great is forward looking and open to interpretation. Having said that, every city in one way or the other is great because had this not been the case, why would people flock there in droves.

We frame the parameters that make up a city and do a thorough analysis of the city based on these parameters and study their interdependencies, which helps us to conclude which parameters have stronger or weaker links, enabling us to ind out the areas that need to be worked on. The analysis becomes an integral part in the development of the city, helping in making effecient plans, according to the present needs. The analysis provides us with the information continuously needed to make the city better.
On studying each of these layers in depth, an index, indigenous to each city can be fixed. These indices develop a network representing the urban fabric of the city. This leads to an inter-reliant network of all the different patterns and becomes an icon for the city. A fluid logo which each city updates with time, giving a platform to urban planners to analyse where the city needs to be worked on; by analysing the strong, mild and weak links.
CENTER FOR HUMAN INTERACTION We interact with a number of people daily, whether consciously aware of the built environment or not. To initiate talks on an urban level, only a platform is needed to make people aware of such discussions. An urban lab is one such platform where people can initiate or participate in discussions and debates.

Talkthecity is an exploration of the 21st century social service offering a new model for how we make shared decisions about shared spaces. It tests the exciting potential of crowdsourcing and open source engagement along with the practical realities of debating, governing, investing in and ultimately delivering the built environment. talkthecity is an “open source construction kit.” It enables anyone with an Internet connection to access a shared library of structural designs. By clicking a button marked, “Build your own lab” talkthecity generates a set of cutting files for each of the parts that goes into that particular structure. We intend to invite people equipped with the knowledge of designing, building and construction to upload their own designs to the website which can be made available to the general public to make their own structures.

WHO IS INCAPACITATED? 7 continents, 196 countries and 7.3 billion human lives. The world has seen many people, but never the same person twice. No person is superior, or inferior, yet nobody is equal either. Every individual is unique, incomparable and should be respected as he is. A mutual understanding comes not only with an understanding of differences, but also when one starts to value and respect the diversity. The question is neither of equality nor inequality, but of eaqual opportunities. All the inequalities, stereotypes and negativity in the world emanate from a single point- the human mind. A few misconceptions that our brain stops questioning results in the creation of an irrational barrier which is then materialised in the world by our own actions. Everyone is incapacitated and everyone is capacitated, the need is to understand these terms and go beyond them.

FUTILITY OF BARRIERS The basic idea is to bring people on the same spectrum of equality - in this case, a positive state of mind. In this state of mutual equality they can realise the futility of all the barriers they have erected around them, be it personal or social. In a positive state of mind, our brain releases highquantity of Dopamine which makes us feel happier. All the learning centres of the brain are activated.This helps in greater learning aptitude, the user is able to grasp new ideas and new concepts much more easily than in the initial state

GOING BEYOND THE FIVE SENSES The role of architecture was never that of commanding, it has always been that of suggesting. The series was evolved to a network to suggest multiple choices for the user to reflect upon. The experience of the spaces was also developed to be subject to interpretation by the user itself. Since the interpretation and the choices are bound to change with respect to time and the mood of the user, it creates a different journey every time.

Metamorphose Paillion consists oF two levels supported by slender cylindrical columns, a reminiscent of Corbusier’s pilotis. The spaces are such that they are useless without the user itself. It is the user which creates the functions, the hierarchy of spaces and the pathways.
THE PATHWAYS SUBJACENT COURTYARD The Subjacent courtyard consists of various low levels; consisting of multiple openings, dramatic pathways and functional spaces.
The pathways are dramatic in their play of basic elements like water, wind, light and shadow. Open planes and small windows provide a different perspective to same spaces. Thus discovering something new about the same thing during movement.
MEDITATION CENTER It is a semi closed space with floating walls supported by coumns in a calm tropical pond well complimented by a dynamic roof form . Inside, the walls are barren, the only light comes from slits in the roof which creates dynamic reflections on the surface of water. Brass is used on the roof to signify divinity through the reflections. Porus concrete has been used for free flow of air despite structural barrier.
KINETIC TO DYNAMIC Different dynamic endeavours were undertaken to respect the timelessness of the building. These consisted of a man-made and controlled exoskeleton structure and natural but careful landscapes. These spaces were added such that they transcend from mere kinetics to a wholly dynamic space.
Subtle design elements that go beyond the five senses and stimulate the more primal senses of the mind i.e. sense of freedom, curiosity, communication and exploration, creates a positive state of mind for all the users. At the same state of mind, the internal forces are resolved, the user ‘feels’ the equality in his environment.
WELL OF LIGHT A dramatic approach of high walls and narrow corridors surprises the viewers with an unexpected burst of space and light. The scale is monumental, the form is enclosing and yet its open sense is captivating. Thermochromic concrete has been used as it adds to the dynamism of the well of light as it will change colour with change in thermal imprint.

ARE OUR SPACES SAFE FOR WOMEN? Manimajra has developed into an urban town from a small village that was initially centered around a fort. Today it has a mall, a civil hospital, a bus stand, a large market complex, religious centres, old fort and tricity’s major motor market. Despite the site being an important node for daily needs and interactions, the percentage of women using this area is very low. Several factors contribute to its bad reputation and poor usability.

The site of Manimajra is a potential socio-cultural hub where all kinds of people could be brought together to make it safe and interactive. To bring in diverse user groups and ensure activity in the region for longer durations, mix land use pattern has been adopted. Reverting the old format of shop cum flats, families will use this public space, improving the type of crowd. Day market is restructured to improve circulation in the market and surveillance over the motor market. This will make the motor market safer to use for women as well. A public piazza is created which is accessible from three sides. This serves as a cultural meeting point, relaxation space for people, playing area, an area for religious gatherings, place to sit, eat, drink and walk.

Jogging track on the second floor enhances the view from the residences besides serving its functional purpose. This will provide a chance for people to meet, greet and interact. All basic amenities have been catered to including details like bus stand design, public conveniences, benches, etc.

THE TODAS OF NILGIRIS The task was to study an indigenous Indian settlement, the lifestyle of the people, their culture and any unique architectural practices followed. Using this study we had to find out the problems or requirements of the settlement and propose an intervention using this knowledge which would impact the life of the people of the settlement. The settlement chosen for study was Kollimund, a small Toda tribe on the highest slopes of Nilgiri Hills in Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India. The oldest existing tribe in the state, the todas have a unique culture and architecture. Mainly a herding tribe, they are great worshippers of buffalo and live in small half barrelled houses.
VERNACULAR SETTLEMENT KNOWING THE ROOTS TO MEND THE TREE
BUILDING TODA HUTS The Toda dwellings are divided into three types such as, traditional huts, transitional houses and transformational houses. While the traditional hut reflects a unique architectural style, shape and structure. The transitional house depicts the lack of aesthetic sense by the household members who belong to the later generation trying to make compromise between the traditional structures.The transformational houses mirror the changing tradition of the tribes and is described as the adaptation of the modern systems. The Toda huts, of an oval, pent-shaped construction, usually stand ten feet (3 m) high, eighteen feet (5.5 m) long and nine feet (2.7 m) wide. Each hut has only a tiny entrance at the front—about 3 feet (90 cm) wide, 3 feet (90 cm) tall. That unusually small entrance serves as a means of protection from wild animals.
Built of bamboo fastened with rattan and thatched, a wall of loose stones encloses each hut. Dressed stones (mostly granite) usually make up the front and back of the hut. Thicker bamboo canes arch to give the hut its basic tent shape. Tied close and parallel to each other, thinner bamboo canes lay over that frame. Dried grass stacks were laid over that as thatch. In the traditional hut types, the foundation and the basement are absent because the superstructure of the huts are wooden or bamboo posts and the walls are made up of wickerwork.

STUDENT HOSTEL The aim of the design was to provide the students and staff a space which broke the rigidity of their work space, a space that is relaxing and provides the residents a chance to interact with others, providing ample open spaces for such interactions and for various physical activites.
GROUND FLOOR
The design of the residences breaks the rigid grid followed in the school. The spaces have been staggered to create a sense of informality and playfulness, where the residents can live freely and without the strict rules of the institution. The two hostel blocks, for boys and girls, are on either side of the mess. The two blocks are a mirror image of each other, having the same functions and spaces. The central courtyard is a congregation space to hold events or interact or can be used for physical activities. The functions on the two floors are the same so as to provide ease of access to the students.
