The Madurai - Athens of the east. Madurai is also known as the city of festivals. Every festival is celebrated in the respective streets that are named after the month in which the festival is celebrated.

The Chithirai Thiruvizha

The Chithirai Thiruvizha is one of the longest festivel. The entire city wears a festive look when the month of april begins. This festival re-enacts the entire story of the wedding of meenakshi amman and kalalagar’s visit to madurai as said in Hindu mythology.

The Procession and Mapping

The Procession stretch starts from the Alagar Temple to the vaigai river covering a distance of 21 kms. The mapping process starts with the procession strech, Mapping the Mandapas during the kalalagar’s visit to Madurai. This mapping evolves the density, routings, congestions and traffic issues during the festival times.

The proposal is for the retail market in the center of the city with the sustainable aspects and for the future growth of the city. The market should satisfy the population growth of the city which is sustainable, adaptable and affordable. To explain the cultural and heritage relevance of the market to the city.

Redevelopment of Gandhi Market

The present market is 153 years old and serves 12L population of the city. The market is spread out in a large victiny with shops on both sides of the road one joined to another by the hip.The road running between is quite narrow, which makes the place even more congested and jam-packed.

Thesis

The Macro Level study involved in the City’s traffic flow pattern, major traffic hubs and the district level loading/Unloading routes.

City and the Market

• The Gandhi Market is located near the CBD of Trichy.

• Since Market connects the entire city to the North part of the city, the vehicular movement makes the market more traffic and congested.

• Palpannai is the area which connects the Loading/Unloading route with the market.

• The study revelas the encroachment near the Market area. That is the major reason for the traffic near the Market.

Traffic Pattern of the city

Even though the Market has certain issues this becomes the Urban Void of the city. If this Market runs only as a Retail Market, It would become a breathing space for the people living around.
