EKSATHE
This typology will achieve these goals by rethinking how we design, construct and operate shelters with a design based approach. In addition to social and psychological issues surrounding homelessness, this proposal seeks to deal with providing education and income generating skills providing a platform for rehabilitation to women.

RESOCIALISATION OF HOMELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN THROUGH HORTICULTURE THERAPY
Year: 2021 | Location: Bengaluru | Type: Academic | Building Typology: Institutional
01 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN | THESIS | INTRODUCTION

This proposal addresses three major concepts. First, the stigmatization and misconception against homeless women. Second, understanding how building design supports rehabilitation and learning. Finally, community based place of transition, expectation, and hope and garden-based learning providing benefits in the intellectual/cognitive, physical, emotional/psychological, and social domains.
It is time to rethink how we address homelessness, current homeless shelters are dysfunctional and overcrowded. The way these homeless people are treated is just inhumane. A programmatic redefinition of “home” and “crisis shelter” , shifting the boundaries of public and private spaces, and inclusion of self-authoring spaces develops a new form for transitional housing.
There are 18 million street children in India, the largest number of any country in the world, with 11 million being urban.

Most facilities are constructed for other purposes and later reorganised to serve as shelters, not designed to meet the needs of the user group.

Existing rehabilitation models focus on only providing shelter and food rather than systematicdevelopmentoverall

Women have been considered the Hidden Homeless' who are either ignored or not adequately represented in the various studies on the subject. They roughly represented 10-25% of the homeless population. It is found that 60% women are aged 16-30 years and half accompanied by children.

Existing facilities area insufficient and inadequate: majority of shelters are ill-equipped, poorly located, and characterized by the lack of basic services

The project will attempt to address societal issues of homeless women with children keeping in mind the sensitivity and vulnerability of the inmates through salutogenic design principles and horticulture therapy while simultaneously looking at aspects to improve their economic

The main objective is to focus on the diverse needs and spatial requirements of women and children in order to provide supportive and healthy spaces for healing and rehabilitation and encourage informal learning. To increase both the real and perceived sense of safety without creating a confining/suffocating atmosphere. Ex: Territorial reinforcement with visual access control.

AIM
●
Problems surrounding the accuracy of global homelessness statistics include: lack of government resources, the taboo nature of homelessness and the tendency of governments to downplay the issue, and the fact that many homeless people themselves are reluctant to come forward and register due to a combination of shame, insufficient resources, or safety concerns, such as violence and sexual assault. of Shelters for Urban Homeless: minimum space of 50 square foot Actual space available in shelters is less than 15 square feet per person
of research and design, this thesis will look at how shelter architecture can create an environment of growth, stability and rehabilitation, rather than merely a “holding cell” for women in crisis. From this research, we establish a series of design principles that may be implemented in shelters across the country that may act as a new model for community rehabilitation. first purpose-built shelter, replacing an overcrowded, makeshift building.

In Bangalore, a recent study reported indications of sexual exploitation of women under duress and blackmail. The report points out at the lack of basic facilities provided at the shelters. Of the six night shelters, only one shelter in Murphy Town has separate accommodation facility for women. However, this does not include and requirements specific to their children. According to the data available and survey done by IGSSS, Bangalore needs to have about 97 homeless shelter but only 8 functioning shelter are present out of which only one of them houses women, under terrible conditions. There is availability of resources and a network in place that can facilitate and fund a development shelter for the women with dependent children.

The quality of space and varied functions for long-term rehabilitation, healing and architectural intervention to avoid abandonment of space after some time. Tailored spatial design that addresses user needs and complex issues of safety, dignity and flexibility beyond pragmatic needs of a temporary place to stay. Purpose-built accommodation that may provide better physical safety and psychological well-being through strategic spatial design that directly caters to the diverse needs of users. Integrating quality of space, light and material to enhance wellbeing. Design considerations for purpose-built accommodation should be considered as a way to help alleviate distress, build confidence and create an environment for learning and encouragement.

Spatial perception has a noticeable contribution in deciding the ‘aura’ and ‘energy’ of a space. The bare simplicity/level of complexity in which space/series of spaces can be accessed and navigated helps trigger respective desired emotions. The idea was to create an “identity” for the campus but at the same time respect the context. Conceptualization of architecture design was programme and process based and it put social and visual relationships at the centre, which follows the concept of space and spatial continuity. The campus design seeks to maintain and enhance learning and social experiences within spaces from learning areas to student accomodation.
20 03

The brief was to design an architecture institute located in the outskirts of Mysuru overlooking the Chamundi Hills on one side and Uttanahalli lake on the other. The site is about 5 acres out of which 3 acres is to be utilized for design and 2 acres left untouched for future expansion.
The objective was to integrate design with history, theory, building construction and material science; to explore programmatic, spatial and informal structuring of spaces.

Internal courtyards in the academic and hostel blocks provide space for social interaction and activities, also proper utilisation of daylight. As a result of cluster formation, multiple small informal interactive spaces are created.
Multiple breakout spaces have been provided around the whole site like pergola seating, stepped seating, open cafeteria with sunken seating and a pond which is seen as soon as admin block is crossed.
The idea was to create an institutional structure portraying strength and creating its identity without affecting its context. The entire site is broken down into smaller rectilinear plans on slightly different levels following the contours creating clusters which are further broken down internally to follow a courtyard based planning.

4 Units of studio+lecture rooms have been arranged around the 2 stepped courtyards which are woven around resulting in an open but shaded apce which could transform itself to facilitate various open air activities, both academic and social.
Triple sliding wooden doors separate the studio+lecture rooms which can be opened to act as one combined unit in need of more space for the functioning of classes and other activities.

Documentation and Design for Rural Village

|
In the name of development, the mines and industries affected the village. this led to their identity being lost, livelihoods being destroyed and their traditions being eroded. old ways have come undone and their lifestyles have changed. Over-exploitation of people, resources and close proximity to industries have contributed to the pollution of the village. However, the villagers, despite their woes, continued to hold on.
The aim of the project was to familiarize ourselves with the rural reality, in particular with the rural living space, its condition and the diverse challenges of survival, preservation of character and development in the modern context of changes in the economic structure and urbanization trends.

The aim was to create a design that identifies, understands, analyzes, documents and pre sents the various elements of the social production process through which the rural liv ing space has been created over the generations, and uses them creatively in a design to support the process and provide the rural settlements a modern form that preserves their community-village context.
