ART AND CULTURE CENTRE FOR APATANIS THE UPLIFTMENT OFORF TRIBES

ZIRO VALLEY, ARUNACHAL PRADESH

APATANIS

iro valley, Arunachal Pradesh

1. Apatanis are permanently settled in one place whereas other tribes are nomadic in nature move from one place to another in search of fertile lands. They travel vast area of forests and settle temporarily for not more than four to five years in one place. 2. Apatanis cultivate permanent wet land cultivations whereas other tribes practice dry land cultivations by clearing the forests by burning the jungles. 3. Apatanis used to practice facial tattoos before; now they have dropped this custom few decades back.

Art and Culture Centre, z

A centre for the upliftment of tribes of Ziro valley, Arunachal Pradesh.

WHY ART AND CULTURE CENTRE?

1. There are lot of changes in the Apatani lifestyle the disappearing tattoos and the rapidly expanding concrete structures in. The expenses of the festivals, have become too much for many to bear. 2. The traditional techniques and methods of architecture is vanishing with time. 3. It is one of the largest tribes of India having unique culture and the sustainable ways of farming since ages. 5. In April 2014, Apatani Cultural Landscape has been added to the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for “extremely high productivity” and “unique” ways of preserving ecology.

Tribal

Tribal Art and Culture Centre for Apatanis,

are non-nomadic tribes and a native settler of ziro valley, arunachal pradesh. Apatanis have few unique special characteristic features which differs from other tribes in arunachal pradesh and india. Few of these special characteristic features are:

DESIGN GUIDELINES: iro valley, Arunachal Pradesh

1.Design should reflect the lifestyle of Apatanis by maximising the use of local material which is bamboo and minimum use of concrete.

Maximum opening on south side will allow the structure to gain more heat which will keep the strucure warmer.

Art and Culture Centre, z

2.No personal space for parking required so that people travel in local vehicle due to which the footfall of vehicles will be minimised and also it won't create pollution in the site.

Distribution of areas (bubble diagram)

CONCEPT: To divide the building into three different zones which will be interconnected. 1 Institutional zone 2 Social zone

Tribal

3 Residential zone

DESIGN GUIDING PRINCIPLES

19

| 35

Staggered and narrow street planning will allow more absorption heat and as it is an institutional building there should be interconnectivity between the staggered planning. Residential zone to be kept in private so that there is no noise pollution.

THE CONCEPT:

Water body outside the residential zone will give a charming view from that zone to other zones.

T o m a k e a n institutional building that will connect the Apatanis with the outsiders and exchange knowledge with them.

Tribal

Art and Culture Centre, z

iro valley, Arunachal Pradesh

As per the climate of ziro valley there should be more opening on the southern side to get more heat from the sun which helps the room to be warmer during all seasons.
