POST GRADUATION (M.ARCH) PROJECTS 2017-2019

THESIS: ECOLOGICAL BASED URBAN REGENERATION OF DEHRADUN • Urbanization is causing negative impact on the ecology of the area. • Forest cover and Agricultural land is shrinking due to infrastructural development. • Environmental areas like green cover and water bodies in the city are becoming dumping grounds. • Loss of humanecology interface.

Growth of the city Till 1950s, the city had already developed as an institutional town with major institutions like the forest research institute, survey of India, ranger’s institute and other research institutes developed by the Britishers. Also, the valley has fertile land which is suitable for agricultural practices due to which a vast variety of crops like potato, rice, tea, pulses, and other vegetables are cultivated here. IN 1980s, THE CITY WAS NOTIFIED AS THE “ECOLOGICALLY SENSITIVE AREA” AND IN 2000s, IT WAS NOTIFIED AS THE INTERIM CAPITAL OF UTTARAKHAND STATE. After this, a lot of infrastructural development took place which caused a huge loss to its ecology.

I n c r e a s i n g u r b a n i z a t i o n e n c r o a c h i n g t h e g r e e n c o v e r.

Hypothesis

The site is located in the Doon Valley of Uttarakhand State. Dehradun City is the capital of the state and an urban area with institutional function.

Urban Analysis The urban form and its impacts are studied to analyze the ecological losses in land, water and vegetation.

Ecology of the city Dehradun was notified as the ecologically sensitive area in 1982. There were abundance of water resources in the form of canals, rivers which pass through the city. These waters were used for the irrigation and domestic purposes. Agriculture was the primary source of income as rice, pulses, litchi, potato and tea were well grown and exported. Dehradun basmati is considered as the best type of basmati rice in India. Also, the city is surrounded by the Sal forests all around the four directions.

STUDIO: INTEGRATION OF REGIONAL CONTEXT: UPPER BEAS REGION, HIMACHAL PRADESH

The valley had its importance from the ancient trade route that was between India and Tibet. That passes through the upper Beas valley mainly at the time of Chinese Pilgrim during 7th century A.D. As far as the start of urbanization in the Upper Beas Basin is concerned, according to the available literature the valley has historical evidences of being the prime center for trade in northern Himalayas. Jagatsukh and Nagar were the prime centers at that time, as they were the capital centers and got special attention. Later during the British rule another center was opened at Manali, which was almost considered to be the end point of human settlement in Beas valley.

Urban Analysis

Issue Analysis The physical conditions of the mountain environment have an important influence on the distribution of human settlements. There is distinct clustering of human settlements in the valley. The main towns of the valley, Kullu and Manali are situated at the confluence of Beas River and its major tributaries. Administration head of the valley is in Kullu.

Proposal: Disaster Risk Reduction through Land Use Management

STUDIO: INTEGRATION OF URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE KAPURTHALA, PUNJAB

Kapurthala was a state ruled by Ahluwalias. It is believed that the city town Kapurthala was founded in 11th century by one Rana Kapur who came from Jaisalmer. Kapurthala means ‘the land of Kapur’.

Morphology Analysis

It seems that various factors remained responsible for the overall development of town as well as LPA during different periods. Important events like establishment of sugar mill and distillery in Hamira in 1944-45, Kapurthala town becoming district Head Quarter in 1956, declaration of Kapurthala Sub Division in 1965, etc. remained important catalyst for the development for the development of various activities.

Proposal: Compact Urban Mobility

Accessibility is analysed on the basis of proximity from city Centre to further areas.

Also, the area plans are analysed on the basis

of

closure

proximity

and

transportation. 

Proximity is checked as what population has easy approach to what amenities.

The major city concentration is in the

areas 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 which are mostly in the walkable limit and further can be approached by para-transits like cycle rickshaws and e-rickshaws. 

The major land uses and most of the public infrastructures are within the walkability limits of the city from the city Centre.

Based on population, 40% of the city’s population is within the walkable limit of the city and is in close proximity to much of

the

amenities.

THESIS: HABITAT CENTER, NOIDA THE ABSTRACT FORM THE IDEA WAS TO BUILD A BUILDING THAT IS NON-MONOTONOUS, THUS ADOPTED THE ABSTRACT FORM. THE ABSTRACT FORM IS TO BREAK THE MONOTONY AND CREATES AN EXCITEMENT IN THE LAYOUT.

FLOATING COLUMNS THE TERM FLOATING COLUMN IS ALSO A VERTICAL ELEMENT WHICH ENDS (DUE TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN/ SITE SITUATION) AT ITS LOWER LEVEL (TERMINATION LEVEL) RESTS ON A BEAM WHICH IS A HORIZONTAL MEMBER. THE BEAMS IN TURN TRANSFER THE LOAD TO OTHER COLUMNS BELOW IT. THE FLOATING COLUMN ACT AS A VERTICAL BEAM. SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP THE BUILDING OPENS TRYING TO CREATE FREE SPACES THAT HELP TO EXTEND THE PUBLIC GREEN SPACES.

THE CROSS PERMEABILITY IS PROPOSED IN THE PLOT TO CREATE AN INTERMEDIATE COVERED AREA THAT CONNECTS AND ALLOWS INDEPENDENT ACCESSES TO THE DIVERSE SERVICES. THE BUILDING HAS AN ADVANTAGE TO MANAGE A GREAT ENVIRONMENTAL RICHNESS.

THE PROFILE HAS BEEN MODIFIED WITH MAJOR AND MINOR HEIGHTS, WHICH MOREOVER WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DIFFERENTIATE THE THREE DIFFERENT BUILDING AND TOIDENTIFY IT AS A PUBLIC BUILDING.

MODERN ARCHITECTURE THE BUILDING IS IN MODERN ARCHITECTURE STYLE. TRUE MATERIALS ARE USED. THE FUNCTION FOLLOWS THE FORM OF THE BUILDING. THE BUILDING IS SIMPLE YET APPEALING.
