NEW BOSTON CITY HALL

architecture design, Yale post-professional studio Date: 2014.09-2014.12 Location: Boston, MA Collaborator: Mengshi Sun Advisor: Edward Mitchell, Aniket Shahane City hall program: This project highlights personal and individual connection with the city hall as well as collective experience, turning city hall into a place shared by both those who govern and the people who are governed. Where people get licenses and have ceremonies for weddings, deaths and births are as important as other government functions.

SIHEYUAN IN THE AIR

architecture and urban design, Yale - Tsinghua Joint Studio Date: 2012.09-2012.12 Location: Beijing, China Collaborator: Xiaomeng Wang Advisor: Wenyi Zhu, Jian Liu Reflection on traditional spatial forms in the new era: On the new extension of the central axis in Beijing, few hints of the city’s rich history can be found. This project respondes to the city’s modern need for high density by keeping the decent spatial quality inherited from traditional spaces.

09

10

TRADITIONAL SPATIAL FORMS SIheyuan

COMPARISON between urban context of the old and the new Traditional residential units are now crowded and lacking in infrastructure.

T h e old city of Beijing is mainly made up of smallscale urban fabrics. Traditional fabrics are interwoven with natural open spaces.

On the new axis of Beijing stand public facilities with huge volumes.

Iconic modern buildings give no clues to locality or tradition.

11

Traditional elements are turned into kitsch.

THE VOID IN SECTION

The void is very important in Chinese aethestics. The courtyard of every Siheyuan is the void, compared to the surrounding buildings, and is also the core of Siheyuan. The void of the courtyard connects the land and the sky, creating an inward space on ground level but an outward space towards the sky. Thus, not only the void of the courtyard is preserved, but also the space between different levels is created with the height of 24 meters, connecting the courtyard with the sky. 15

SITE Chongwenmen(an ancient gate of Beijing, now demolished) - Beijing Station Area is located within the old city of Beijing (the scope within the 2nd Ring Road). The historical area used to serve as the entrance area of the city in ancient dynasties - with the Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics as an evidence. Nowadays, due to the existence of Beijing Station, this area still remains to be the entrance to the city. In this area lie complicated and various transportational systems, partially well-preserved residential Siheyuan(traditional courtyard houses in Beijing) and scattered historical sites.

FARMERS’ MARKETS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF BEIJING OLD CITY

research and renovation proposal, graduation thesis at Tsinghua University Date: 2013.08-2014.05 Location: Beijing, China Advisor: Wenyi Zhu

PUBLIC MARKETS FIELD RESEARCH

29

Research outline: The public markets are vital for local residents in Beijing as places for food supply and social interactions, especially for housewives and the elderly. However, most of the farmers’ markets are set up in the simplest and cheapest way, resulting in the shabby and unattractive appearance of the markets. The problem is even more severe in the old city of Beijing. the research investigates the history, distribution status, spatial characteristics and public attibutes of the total 47 public markets within the old city of Beijng. Besides analysis, categorizing and conclusions, a renovation proposal of a market is given.

QIXIN PERFORMANCE AND EXHIBITION CENTER renovation of Qixin cement factory, professional work Date: 2012.5-2013.9 Location: Tangshan, Hebei Province, China Collaborator: Wenyi Zhu, Dan Luo, Ruoyun Xu, Tong Wu Work: Main theater design, construction drawings, modelling Rediscovery of the value of industrial heritages: By inserting new programs based on local culture and needs and preserving the value of the old industrial building, this project aims to create a public space that benefits the public and provides economic profit for local enterprise and government.

43

44

FACTORY BUILDING STATUS Qixin cement factory is an industrial building built in the late 19th century. The building contains a one-storey, large span space with the length of 160 meters and the width of 24 meters. The facade is austere and full of industrial beauty. Many original structures and details, including brackets, side rooms, overhead cranes, feeding hoppers and the ancient wood and steel roof structure all survived the huge earthquake in 1976 and are still discernable nowadays. However, as a result of enterprise transformation, the whole building needs renovation as well as maintenance.

45

STRUCTURE STRATEGY ROOF STRUCTURE preserve the original wood and steel roof structure and add iron mesh to provide spaces for facility space

COLUMNS preserve the original columns and add new iron columns to hold newly-added upper floors
