UNBOXED

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION I GROUP OF 3 ARCHMELLO | 2020 PUNE

THE TASK

To address the unmet demand of student housing across India through an innovative architectural solution. The idea is to enhance the concept of “student community” in India by setting up student residence module such that it can be repeated across the country and function as student housing brand.

The design focuses on three major parameters that are privacy, individuality and flexibility which are till today neglected in the student housing market in India.

Here, Containers, which are essentially large boxes are used to break the norm of a concrete box that has become a synonym of student housing in India.

INTERNATIONAL | GROUP OF 2 BERKELEY ESSAY PRIZE | 2019 SEMIFINALIST

THE TASK

How do civic buildings create community?

The topic focused on how civic architecture provides for the health, safety, education, intellectual life and well-being of the community. What exactly it is about the design of these buildings that make them so successful and the ways in which collaboration with other disciplines has contributed to their success.

An architect cannot make this happen alone.

ARCHITECTURE OF HOPE: CONNECTING PEOPLE IN SITUATION OF DESPAIR

“Once challenged, the Architect will find completely new shapes and means to produce the hospitals, but he cannot know what the Doctor knows. (Louis Kahn)” By combining architecture and medical education, two different yet similar basic human pursuits, we intend to study the communities created by healthcare buildings.

More than 34 years since the Union Carbide Gas Tragedy (1984) struck Bhopal, over 23,000 people have died and 1,00,000 survivors still remain ill and drink polluted groundwater. To provide medical facilities and health care services to the survivors of Bhopal Gas Disaster and their dependents, various healthcare centres like Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre and Sambhavana Trust Clinic, were formed to serve the community. These are a part of the security bedrock of a stable society.

“Caring is a way of life”. This is the motto at Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC), located in the heart of India, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Built in 1998, at a distance of 700 meters from the worst-hit neighbourhood, is a lush green campus with a serene atmosphere greeting patients and their families. These areas are connected with avenues and paths cut out in-between the lawns.

“Aesthetics, accessibility, proximity, function, and public spaces shape the hospital and play a fundamental role concerning people’s satisfaction and experience of healthcare.” BMHRC opens up some areas of the hospital to public use and support the healthcare functions with other commercial and recreational functions like auditorium, playground and canteen. It plays a major role in building the confidence of the community, giving them identity.

“Architecture is a tool to improve lives... a medium to strengthen cultural and individual confidence, to support local economies and to foster the ecological balance. (Anna Heringer) ” These lines best summarize the intent behind the design of Sambhavana Trust Clinic, situated in the heart of the gas-affected area of Bhopal, near J.P. Colony.

The Sambhavana Trust Clinic is a sustainable building, built in 2005 with the hellp of concerned people, operates largely from donations of citizens worldwide, managed by Mr. Satinath Sarangi, providing free of cost healthcare facilities to the survivors. This is a place they trust, doing honest work for people of Bhopal, providing holistic treatment options like Ayurveda, Yoga, Panchakarma and Allopathy as well. It houses a library, park, canteen, solar panels, and courtyards with a pond formed by rainwater harvesting, herbal garden, and a GolGhar (a recreational space / Gazebo).

In Bhopal, we see the power of a growing movement for a toxin-free future. The above buildings showcase a large and a small scale solution, creating a community of people helping each other effortlessly, generating opportunities for hope through creative and collective intervention in a situation of despair.

If we could understand how physical surroundings affect emotions and how emotional responses to architecture affect health, then people’s health could be taken into account in the design of buildings because we construct an image of a place based on the information we receive through our senses, and somehow it all gets together to create our sense of place.
