Seattle Parking FactFinder: Parking Occupancy Rate Prediction Application

Seattle Parking FactFinder

Parking Occupancy Rates Prediction Application

Introduction Seattle is currently facing a challenge of oversupply of parking spaces. Complaints have been made by local residents stating that the amount of available parking spaces is in excess of the actual need. City planners should consider the complaints related to excess parking when making plans for a neighborhood or for the city as a whole. Currently, there is no convenient way for planners to know how the parking requirements change when a certain area’s land use changes. Neither is there a way for planners to know which area local residents generally consider as having an oversupply of parking spaces. The Seattle Parking FactFinder application is designed to meet this challenge by predicting the occupancy rates for different land uses taking into account rush (peak) hour. (check out this video: https://youtu.be/GVThyQMAhxM for full presentation of the app.) Annual Average Occupancy Rate by Land Use Type

Study Area Locations in Seattle

User Case The current app is designed for a smart phone. However, the flow of the app will work well for a desktop application as well. There are two target user groups: city residents and planners. Users can set up their identification as residents or planners in the opening page. For city residents: 1. Find out current predicted occupancy rate of a street segment. 2. Compare occupancy rate during different time period to find out whether the street segment is over supplying parking space. For city planners: 1. Find out current predicted occupancy rate of a street segment. 2. See what-if prediction of the occupancy rate based on a required land use type. 3. Decide whether to make a change.

Exploratory Data Analysis

Seattle Parking FactFinder: Parking Occupancy Rate Prediction Application

Scatterplot of the Relationship between Dependent Variable and Explanatory Variables

As part of the exploratory data analysis, the relationships between different variables in the datasets downloaded were examined. Since the prediction is based on whether the occupancy rates change with land-use changes, built environment variables were mainly considered for the analysis. From the maps it can be seen that the areas with taller building seem to have fewer street parking spaces. The smaller the height of the building and greater the availability of street parking. Moreover, census tracts with high car ownership seem to be clustered in the downtown area. Finally, most of the land-use by street segment in the downtown area relates to commercial/business land-use type.

Exploratory Data Analysis Mapping

Correlation Matrix The correlation matrix of the continuous explanatory variables show that most of the variables are not severely correlated with each other. However, there seems to be some correlation between car-ownership (by census tract) and building height. This validates what was found when examining the maps of these variables i.e., carownership and tall buildings are concentrated in the downtown area.

Regression Results

Seattle Parking FactFinder: Parking Occupancy Rate Prediction Application

Spatial Cross-validation

The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method was used to run the regression analysis. The dependent variable (occupancy rate) and one of the explanatory variables (average building height) were log-transformed since it helped make their distributions more normal.

Results Interpretation The model has a low MAE and MAPE value and the residuals are relatively not that clustered. Zoning code and neighborhood classification were one of the many variables considered as predictors in this model. These variables helped improve the accuracy of the fit (the R-square was 0.49). However, the model could not be generalized. The parking data available covers only few parts of Seattle and not the whole city. Therefore, performing cross validations was a challenge since both these variables are categorical variables with too many levels. However, despite its lack of generalizability this model was still run since the current app is very specific to Seattle.

8

The results of the spatial cross validation show that the model is not doing a good job of being generalizable over different land-use types. Aside from the results shown above, several other zoning sub-groupings and spatial regressions had been performed earlier. One such grouping involved combining neighborhood classification with the zoning classification system - for instance, Downtown and mixed-use. When spatial cross validation was performed using this grouping system, the error for mixed use and Downtown was very low but for industrial it was very high. This is because, there aren’t enough neighborhoods in the study area to perform spatial cross-validation effectively.

Spatial Risk Modeling: Crime Predictive Model of City of Chicago

The Poisson Distribution

Spatial Risk Modeling

The distribution of crime counts, as well as it's correlation with the independent variables, like many phenomena in the world is non-linear. It is because crime is a rare event. In this case it’s Poisson. We will build the model with Poisson Regression.

Crime Predictive Model of City of Chicago

Introduction Crime is a relatively rare event and it may be happening at a greater rate than what we observe in the data, by predicting this risk we may be able to create a tool that Police can use to more efficiently allocate their limited resources. First let's map out the current crime points. We can get a better sense for the spatial distribution and prepare the data for our regression by aggregating the point data to the “fishnet” - a lattice grid of polygons that we will use to define “place” in our analysis. Fishnet

Crime Points Joined to Fishnet

Data Wrangling & Exploratory Mapping I downloaded exploratory data from the Chicago Open Data site, and join them with the fishnet. Finally I got a data set with all the variables.

After run the regression, let’s create standardized regression coefficients, which puts them all the same scale. We can do this to get a better understanding of which variables play a role in predicting crime.

Standardized coefficients

Accessing Goodness of Fit

The histogram of standardized coefficients tells us which variable is most important in predicting crimes. Obviously it is the distance to other crime points.

We can easily calculate Mean Absolute Error. The MAE is around 3, which means our model in total has a mean absolute error of 3. We can also calculate it by districts.

Compare risk predictions to Kernel Density By comparing the predicted values to kernel density estimates in different breaks, we could know how close our prediction is to the real situation in terms of different risk levels. In this model, our predicted risk is approximately similar to the kernel density, doing best at a risk level of 70%-89%. (risk level means how likely there are crimes in this area).

Mapping predictions The histogram of standardized coefficients tells us which variable is most important in predicting crimes. Obviously it is the distance to other crime points.

Sew-kill: Smart CSO Monitoring and Treatment Installation

Prototype Concept

Sew-kill

Smart CSO Monitoring and Treatment Installation

Introduction Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) occur when rain overwhelms combined sewer systems leading to untreated sewage entering rivers. This can make the water unsafe for human contact and harms aquatic organism health. The Schuylkill River in Philadelphia has been impacted by CSO problems. Despite the Green City Clean Water program that began in 2011 to build green stormwater infrastructure in Philadelphia, the segment of the Schuylkill River that runs through Center City has not seen any reduction in overflow volume, frequency, or duration. Because of this we believe we should try to treat the outflows in the river through smart floating wetlands. The initial focus area for the project is the riverbank next to the Schuylkill River Park and Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk.

14

In the real world, the prototype will be arranged as modular units. Each unit will have the power source/controller basin in the center and multiple vegetation basins will surround the controller basin. The filtration door in rhe center adds resistance to the CSO water flow which in turn helps slow down the flow speed.

CONCEPT DESIGN

“The person who I miss is somewhere beyond the water. This is an old Chinese poem that sings for dreaming lover. Similarly, this park is also an idealization work place for people living in the surburb of Hangzhou. To them, this is a dream place where unequity and social filters are removed, only inspiration and collaboration remain. This place should be distinguished from its surroundings. Celadon, one of the most famous name cards of Zhejiang, is a kind of common vessel used in almost every household in Hangzhou. We choose it as our design icon in hope of remaining its physical qualities meanwhile making this area presenting a romantic Hangzhou style.

35

The height of the buildings is falling by several steps from the inland to the river side. Each bottle works as a function platform (see previous page), jointly working as a whole system. We try to make the system behind this park both clear and transparent, which we think will promise high efficiency. And that is why we call it "lucid city".
