افتتاحية العدد بقلم عمران العويس
Over the past few months, many signs have emerged about the iPhone finally making an official entrance in the UAE and now it is here. Slight hints and tips were exposed from time to time and we’ve tried to keep up with these on Shufflegazine.com. What made the Shufflegazine team notice it more was when the small “hush hush update”- the Carrier Settings update with the 2.2 iPhone software with improved service on Etisalat’s network- came to welcome us on our iPhone displays one day. This made us very confident that the iPhone was coming. My gut feeling was so strong that it was coming, and so was that of the local online communities, that we could not be quiet about it. Actually, I am first writing this letter in January 20th 2009; that’s how confident I am that iPhone will be here in my hands when you read this. So, here we are, with the official iPhone, no more hacks, no more Satwa backstreets, no more expensive SIM card unlocks, and no more Yellowsn0w. Just a simple, straight forward phone. I’m hoping that a complete iTunes for UAE is now on Apple’s radar and I can see the potential for Arabic programers to develop cool apps that can help me to find things and information around the GCC, like a cool Lebanese restaurant close by, or Qibla direction for my prayers. Our vision for the Apple invasion of the world including the Middle East is coming true my friends, and I hope we at Shufflegazine can be there right by your side to give you just the correct amount of fun and excitement in the same way we feel behind the scenes.

Etisalat Launches iPhone in UAE And KSA اتصاالت تطلق آي فون في اإلمارات و السعودية

The rumors were true; Etisalat started selling the iPhone in the UAE and KSA on February 22, 2009. The launch followed the announcement in the papers on February 2nd by an Etisalat ad stating “Etisalat today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone 3G to the United Arab Emirates and to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” Since that initial ad from Etisalat, the company had been very quiet on the matter of iPhone, just adding two simple pages on their web site. Ending years of speculation the iPhone arrived to Etisalat with four different postpaid contracts. Etisalat staff told us there was no prepaid option available now and they were unaware of whether one would be available in the future. The 12-month contracts gives customers a range of options in monthly cost as well as what data, voice minutes, and SMS messages are included in the monthly plan. Basically the price for an 8GB iPhone varies from AED0 (free) to AED2646, with monthly rental ranging from AED199 to AED643. The price for 16GB iPhone ranges from AED375 to AED3090, with same monthly rental as the 8GB model. Any voice minutes or SMS messages over the quota will be charged at regular rates. Extra data is charged at 2fils/kb (or AED20/MB). Of much concern to many customers was the 2GB top-tier data allotment. Many see it as too little data for too much money. Customers who already have an iPhone can sign up for a plan but you cannot buy an iPhone from Etisalat without signing up for a contract. Something that was not publicly made available before the launch was that iStyle stores in both countries were selling iPhones from the first morning. It should be pointed out though that it was Etisalat staff in the iStyle stores that did the processing of the contracts. The iPhone from Etisalat does not support Arabic although Etisalat staff told us a software update was “coming soon.”

Over the two days David shared his vast InDesign knowledge and experience with a group of

DemoCap 4 in Dubai The fourth DemoCap Dubai was held at the Radisson SAS in Dubai Media City on January 28th. People interested in the latest in web technology, web sites and entrepreneurship gathered to listen to four demos. The demos varied from an iPhone app to accompany the restate.ae real estate web site, to the w2task.com web-based task management system; from the location-aware online marketplace emapia. com, to the database services of startuparabia.com. With a room full of Macs and iPhones, the presenters did a good job showing off their hard work. About 150 Dubai Twitter users, along with volunteers and press, gathered at Barasti at the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi on February 12 to participate in the worldwide “Twestival” celebration and fundraiser. This was the latest opportunity for UAE “tweeters” to meet in person, share ideas and network. Although this gathering was for an online community, such meets are highly valued by participants to bring even greater depth to a beneficial and growing fellowship of local friends

of apps available had reached 15,000. This monumental growth include 200,000 downloads in the previous 6 weeks, reflecting the huge surge in iPhone and iPod touch sales over the holidays.
The figures released include both free and paid apps, so it is yet unknown what the total figures in sales are for the App Store. Griffin Technology Launches Wide Range of Products Griffin Technology, makers of a wide range of iPod, iPhone, and Mac accessories, launched many new products at Macworld in January. Among the products introduced is the SmartTalk Bluetooth headset. The headset reduces background noise for clearer phone conversations and instead of beeping in the ear of the user to signify certain actions, it speaks to the wearer in a real voice. AirCurve is an interesting accessory for iPhone; it’s basically a non-powered speaker that acoustically amplifies the audio coming from the iPhone’s speakers. In the PowerJolt Reserve, Griffin combines a car charger for iPhone and iPod with a removable backup battery that increases the battery life with many hours. The TuneBuds Fit in-ear headphones isolates the music

I’ve been an Apple fan for long enough to remember the time before iPhone. And that’s not long ago, you say, and you’re right, it’s less than three years now. However, it’s also true that the ranks of Apple fans have swelled considerably since Apple introduced the revolutionary mobile phone. Even larger things are ahead

for the iPhone and that, I would argue, is in the marriage between the mobile platform and social networking. Social networking has revolutionized communication between people everywhere. We’ve used it to find old long-lost friends, bring families together, make new friends, and anything else imaginable. And web sites like FaceBook, MySpace, Friendster and many more are a critical part of our everyday lives in a way we probably couldn’t even imagine in our wildest dreams just a short few years ago. What I think will revolutionize how we communicate more than the social networking web sites is mobile devices. I can just look at myself. Most days I Twitter more with Tweetie on my iPhone than I do on my Mac; I check FaceBook more on my iPhone than I do on my Mac, and I could go on.

Think about it for a second; if you can carry your contacts with you in your pocket, leave messages for them and pick up messages from them, wouldn’t you want to do that? Sure, FaceBook’s web site is fun to use and all the thousands of applications can make for great entertainment but carrying even the more rudimentary social networking functions with you wherever you go is so much better. With Twitter it’s more equal between the platforms. Tweetie, an iPhone and iPod touch app for Twitter, is almost as functional as most Mac applications supporting Twitter. There are many other applications for iPhone that are also great, some of them you can read more about further on in this issue. Granted, we have problems in this regard in our region. Even though iPhone has been officially launched in UAE and KSA in February, there is no official iPhone in most countries and the data plans we are offered by the all-mighty telcos are borderline extortion, but don’t let that stop you. Reasons for the leave is Jobs’ illness being “more complex that [he] originally thought”. Apple’s stocks were suspended on the release of the news, but dropped around 10% when trading resumed.

Q: When I first set up my new iPod touch I selected my US iTunes account in the mobile iTunes app. I’d like to change that to the UAE AppStore so I can buy apps for my touch with my UAE credit card. How can I change the store? A: I know of no way of doing this just on the iPod touch (or iPhone). As far as I know you have to do this on the Mac to which your iPod is partnered. In the iTunes store main screen on your Mac, go to the bottom. There you’ll find “My Store”. It probably says “US” for you. Select “United Arab Emirates” and sync your iPod. Q: I just bought an iPhone 3G in Dubai and it came with a TurboSIM. In the shop they said it’s unlocked but I assume since it includes the TurboSIM that it’s not unlocked from Apple. How do I know if it’s unlocked by Apple and I heard there’s a software unlock, how does that work? A: You’re right, if the iPhone came with a TurboSIM it’s most likely locked. You’ll be okay with using it with the TurboSIM but many users report unreliable behavior with that way of unlocking. Apple has
a document online (http://tinyurl. com/6jfzuq), which lists the countries where iPhone is officially available and what model numbers of iPhone that is sold in each country. For factory unlocked iPhones you look for an empty cell in the “Locked to carrier” column, like for Hong Kong and Italy, then check what model numbers apply. For Italy, for example, there are six models that are factory unlocked, starting with MB489T/A. When it comes to the software unlock it’s called Yellowsn0w and you can get it from the Cydia installer application on the iPhone. You have to have an iPhone 3G with the latest 2.2 software version and it has to be jailbroken. There are many detailed instructions online so I’ll refer you to one of them (http://tinyurl.com/8eqr9s). Q: I’ve created a pretty extensive web site in iWeb and I love how easy it is. I don’t have a Mobile Me account though and I don’t really want to pay for one either just for iWeb. We do however have FTP accounts for web sites through work. Can I use that instead of Mobile Me? A: Yes you can and it’s pretty easy. Just go to the File menu and select
the “Publish To a Folder” option. Pick a place on your hard drive where you want to save the site. Final step is to send the content of that folder to your FTP account. After that you should be able to browse your web site on the internet and share it with family and friends. Whenever you make a change to your site you need to go through the whole process again. It’s certainly a lot easier with Mobile Me but it’s not a requirement. And please share with us the URL to your web site so we can all look at your work. In newly released iWeb ‘09 Apple has built in support for publishing directly to FTP.
Unfortunately music, TV, and movies are not yet available in the UAE iTunes store.

Having used Macs for almost twenty years now I’ve experienced most versions of the various operating systems for Macs, tried most of the Mac models, and seen real beginners struggle in different ways to get a grip on their computer. Also as a teacher I’ve experienced beginners to Mac many times. One thing they often have a hard time understanding is the Dock. You know the Dock, that thing usually at the bottom of the Mac OS X screen, with icons in it for applications, files and folders. For simplicity’s sake, I’ll assume you have the Dock at the bottom. You can however also place it on the left or the right of your screen. The first thing to recognize about the Dock is the vertical line

To the right of this line you find shortcuts to files and folders. This means you can drag any file or folder to this part of the Dock and place shortcuts to the original there. When you click on the icon in the Dock it opens the original file or folder.
For any icon in the Dock, removing it from the Dock is as easy as clicking on it, hold the mouse button down, and drag the icon away from the Dock. Note that this doesn’t delete the actual application, file or folder, it only removes the short cut to it from the Dock.

Forget Windows: Getting Into the Mac Mood by Mohammad Abu Ajamieh

Most people adopting the Mac platform are Windows switchers. Why do a lot of switchers face problems in the beginning? The short answer is they cannot get out of the Windows mood. The long answer is that people are used to the Windows interface, the hierarchy of files, system administration, applications installation, hardware configurations, etc. As a switcher from Windows, what should you do? First thing, understand this is not Windows and Mac OS X is not a fancy copy of Windows XP. Then start to learn Mac basics. It’s hard to learn basics when you are so used to Windows, but again this is not Windows, and Mac OS X deserves a chance. Forget the Windows files hierarchy (C, D, E drives) and learn Mac directories. Mainly you have a directory named after your username and there you can find all your sub-directories. Basically file management is a lot easier on a Mac. Forget Windows applications installations and removals. Just drag your application from the DMG (disk image) file and drop into the Applications folder and that’s it. Forget the Windows Start Menu. Opening applications have never been easier than Command+Space and start typing your application’s name. Same goes for your documents. Forget the Windows advanced system administration. On Mac OS
X you will see only the preferences that you need and understand. Forget Windows Hardware detection and installation of drivers. In Mac OS X just plug your USB mouse and most other accessories and start using them immediately. Forget Windows Wireless network wizard. Enable your Wi-Fi (AirPort) from the upper menu bar, and your are done. Forget Windows window management. Learn to use Expose and Spaces, they will save you lot of time. For example, set Expose to work with upper-right corner and Spaces with lower-right and stop wasting time switching between windows. Forget Windows Maintenance. Mac OS X rarely gets infected by viruses. Forget Windows command line. Learn Terminal instead. It’s not a must but it’s cool. Did you know that there is a command in terminal called “talk” that lets you chat with any other Mac on the same network?

Our first thoughts went to ”@DrBaher”, an active Twitter user and local Social Media professional. His Twitter stats are usually the highest ranking in the UAE, but more importantly he’s is a very interesting and intelligent guy. We thought it appropriate to ask him a few questions via Twitter, even with the 140 character message limit.
Q: First things first: Who are you and what do you do? :-) Let’s start with, what is your background? A: I’m Baher Al Hakim, curious and passionate guy about the web, technology and media, I founded and run CloudAppers. A: It’s a Social media and web apps agency, I’m a dentist who worked as Journalist, online office manager and marketing manager. A: I tried to start my own business 4 times before but finally worked out in the fifth time, and couldn’t be any happier

A: Then I got back to it 18 months ago, after I got a VPN to bypass the proxy, and it’s been constant almost-daily since then.
Q: Is Twitter important to your business? How?
apart from it being a major Social media service, I get to know all local new media users. A: On many occasions I got real projects and clients, and referrals through Twitter, in addition to my current business partner.
Twitterrific, very simple, quick and blends in very nicely with overall Mac theme. A: On my Nokia E61, I update mostly through SMS, and I also login online to check out replies.
Q: What other social networking and online communication tools do you use? A: I’m on almost all social networks and social media services, but I daily use Gmail, Facebook, delicious, Google Reader.
Q: Social Media is obviously changing how we communicate and relate w/ others. What less obvious changes to you think it can bring?
A: Less obvious, but with more impact, are changes of cultural nature, like Privacy redefinition and limits, redefinition of friends. A: The concept of Microcelebrity, flattening the world further, reshaping marketing, PR, customer service. A: Not all agree that they are positive changes, but change will happen and it’s always for the good, we must adapt. Period. Q: Do you use a Mac on the job? How do Macs help you get
things done? A: I mainly use Mac for me and everyone at CloudAppers, we totally love them, how easy they are, stable, sexy and fun to use.

Announced at Macworld in January and available at the end of the same month, iLife ‘09 is the latest revision of Apple’s digital lifestyle software, first available in 2003. With major new features in iPhoto and iMovie, it’s a must have package for all Mac users. As is the custom with Apple there is no special upgrade price; you simply buy the whole package even if you have the old version.
iPhoto ‘09
The main new things in iPhoto ‘09 are Faces, Places, and FaceBook integration. When I first heard Phil Schiller talk about them at the Macworld keynote speech I was not very excited, but after using the new iPhoto for myself for a while I can tell you it’s really cool and you will want a copy for yourself for sure. A caveat is required up front though; for Faces to be really effective it requires you to put in quite a bit of work yourself and for Places to be useful it requires you to have a camera that records the right geographic location information. If we start by looking at Faces, the basic idea is that you take lots of photos of people: family, friends, colleagues, etc. With Faces, iPhoto will help automatically recognize people’s faces in photographs and catalogue them accordingly. You will first, however, have to put names to faces because iPhoto doesn’t know that a particular face is Mohammed’s and not Ahmed’s, for example. And as is the case with many similar technologies, the more instances of someone’s face you mark in iPhoto the better the software will automatically detect who it is. This is a ground-breaking functionality for iPhoto and you will love Faces, I’m sure. Apple also did the world a favor by making sure the face recognition information syncs with recognized people in your Facebook account. Places brings geo-tagging to iPhoto. If you take photos with a compatible camera, which includes the
iPhone, iPhoto will automatically put your photos on the world map, so to speak. From a map view you will see push pins where you’ve taken photos and you can quickly go to Dubai, for example, by clicking on the push pin for the city. If you don’t have a compatible camera you can still place your photos on the map but you’ll have to do it manually, which drastically reduces the usability of Places. The camera touted as very compatible with this functionality, the Nikon P6000, we found to be pretty much useless in this regards. The GPS would take too long to try to connect, even outdoors, and too slow to keep up when we were moving. Forget about using it indoors. In terms of editing there are a few new things in iPhoto ‘09, and most of them seem borrowed from Aperture. Despite the editing enhancements, most users will find the new slideshow templates much more cool and useful. It’s safe to say that slideshows built from photographs have never looked better. We know how popular Facebook has become and it’s about time Apple supported it more actively. Now there is a Facebook button in iPhoto, and with one click of the mouse you can send photos to your Facebook account. The Facebook integration is greatly welcome, but Apple, where is Twitter and Twitpic integration?
iMovie ‘09
When iMovie ‘08 came out and Apple ditched the timeline interface of iMovie HD many users were upset with Apple. iMovie HD was however still available as a free download from Apple until recently. You might be happy to know that although Apple hasn’t brought back the timeline in iMovie ‘09 they have drastically imporved the editing functionality. One of the first things you should do when starting to use iMovie ‘09 is to go to Preferences and check the “Show Advanced Tools” box. It will show many more options in several places throughout the application, like when you drop one clip on another. Perhaps it’s a bit bewildering at first, but you’ll soon see the light of

day and the value of the extra functionality. Apple has appeased some iMovie HD fans by adding functionality like slowing down or speeding up individual clips, direct iDVD export with chapter markers, and more. The timeline hasn’t reappeared but the Precision Editor does much of what a timeline does. It’s not all good though as some much-coveted features are still missing. One such thing that puzzles me is that you can’t control volume levels for parts within a clip, only for the clip as a whole. Among the cooler things in iMovie ‘09 are new titles. The most rewarding for all geeks is of course the Star Wars inspired text that scrolls into the screen. Probably the most impressive new feature in iMovie ‘09 is image stabilization. You can analyze clips on import or on demand and iMovie looks at every frame and applies corrections necessary to reduce the shake in the picture. It can’t perform miracles, but it’s amazing how well it works. But if you want iMovie to analyze a longer segment, you’d better get prepared to wait quite a while. Cool, but of very short-lived value, are the animated travel sequences. Pick a starting place, a destination, and iMovie will animate the trip over a spinning globe. I’m not an advanced video photographer or editor but I do shoot and edit video for Shufflegazine as well as privately. And the editing I do is pretty limited but iMovie ‘09 makes the work easier, more enjoyable and the end results look better. The same will be true for you, I would guess.

The widgets from the previous version of iWeb, namely MobileMe Gallery, Google AdSense and Maps, as well as HTML Snippet are still in iWeb but they moved from the toolbar to a widgets sidebar. There you also find the new widgets: YouTube, iSight Photo and Movie, RSS Feed, and Countdown. Widgets are a fun way to spice up a web site, but I wish that Apple would adopt an open format so anyone could develop iWeb widgets.

The good thing is that it’s as easy as ever to create good looking web sites with iWeb ‘09 and Apple has even added some functionality. There are two new templates from which you can build your sites and some new widgets that can enhance your web
Garageband ‘09
My experience with Garageband extends to working with a short-lived EmiratesMac.com podcast quite some time ago now and fundamentally Garageband hasn’t changed much. It’s still the best application available for the wanna-be musician or audio podcaster but now it has a few interesting additions. What got most attention at Macworld was the lessons in the new Garageband. There are Basic Lessons, which teach you how to play an instrument, and Artist Lessons, in which a celebrity teaches how to play one of their famous songs. What didn’t come through at Macworld was how customizable the lessons are.
Arguably the biggest news in iWeb ‘09, and one that is long overdue, is the ability to publish directly to an FTP account. Before, you had to export the site to a folder and then manually upload it to an FTP account, but now you can do it directly from iWeb. As before there is one-click publishing for MobileMe account holders, but the FTP publishing option lessens the tie to MobileMe that iWeb used to have. All in all, iWeb remains a great tool for beginners to create great looking sites full of functionality, such as blogs, podcasts, galleries, etc. But the shortcomings that make it less of a suitable tool for businesses are also still there in the ‘09 version.
There are a wide range of options for how to go through lessons and what you see on the screen. Unfortunately when trying to get Artist Lessons it just says they are not yet available in our region. Another sign that Apple isn’t giving Apple fans in the Middle East everything they deserve.

iDVD
There is simply not much to say about the rest, meaning iDVD. Honestly I cannot seem to find anything new in iDVD, not even new templates. The one new thing concerning iDVD, and it’s really new in iMovie, not iDVD, is that you can set chapter markers and export your project straight to iDVD. This is great if you want to put your iMovie creations on DVD. But in all honesty, iDVD, and to a lesser extent iWeb, seem to be the forgotten parts of iLife, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re not around in iLife ‘10 or whatever version comes next.

Conclusion
With iLife ‘09 Apple clearly focused on iPhoto and iMovie. And the simple fact is that they are in themselves well worth the price of the upgrade, even if there is no special upgrade price. Garageband’s lessons can be fun if you want to learn how to play an instrument, but the new features in iWeb are pretty easy to ignore and let’s not mention iDVD. But even with those issues it’s simple to conclude that if you live a digital lifestyle, buy iLife ‘09. You won’t regret it.

”قلم “اليف سكريب بلس سمارت bugs and problems. That said, after using it for a few weeks now I can say it works fine even for daily use. The pen itself is made out of beautiful blue-toned aluminum. It’s thicker than normal pens and a bit heavier too but considering that it contains a 150MHz processor, 1GB or 2GB memory, audio jack, infrared camera, microphone, speaker, and a small display, it’s a marvel of engineering. According to LiveScribe, the 1GB model can record up to 100 hours, and the 2GB model doubles that to 200 hours. It’s not often that you come across a new technology that has the potential to really change your life but LiveScribe’s Pulse SmartPen is one such technology. Although the actual pen has been out for quite some time it’s only recently that the software that is necessary to use the pen has been available for Mac. So what can it do, you ask. Basically you write with the pen on special paper called dot paper. The dot paper has tiny little dots on it, which a camera in the pen reads to record what you write and draw. A builtin microphone or a special in-ear headset can record audio as well. You connect the pen to your Mac by placing it in a dock connected via USB, any new notes are transferred to the desktop software where it is immediately available for searching. If you wrote, let’s say, “Macworld” somewhere in your notes, you can search for that word and the software will find it. Then you can click on the word and listen to the audio that was recorded at the moment of the writing. The audio is amazingly clear and you’ll be surprised how well you can pick up voices even in noisy environments. So the Pulse system does handwriting recognition as well as audio recording and it’s almost scary how accurate it is. The digital features of this pen don’t work on regular paper, it has to be dot paper. You can buy dot paper paper in various notebooks from LiveScribe but you can also print your own dot paper with a good laser printer (only works with Windows version of the software for now). On your Mac you use LiveScribe’s desktop software, which is still only in public beta. This means you shouldn’t expect it to be without

Very small devices today use Bluetooth ?or even Wi-Fi so why not the Pulse Perhaps that’s something that’s coming in future versions. The LiveScribe Pulse Smartpen is an amazing technology that bridges the best of two worlds: taking notes on paper and having them digitized in the computer. It does so with great accuracy, and transparently to the user. It’s not cheap but it’s well worth the money. The crowd at Macworld went crazy over the Pulse, I’m sure you will too if you try it.

last me pretty much all day. The i2i units are small and light enough that you can wear one around your neck without being bothered by it. That way you can use your favorite headphones to listen to music from your iPod, iPhone or Mac. If I have one concern about the Stream, it is that they operate on the 2.4GHz band where we know there are plenty of other devices already, including wireless phones in homes and offices. For me that’s not been a problem yet but it could be for you. I love that the i2i Stream works with almost any audio devices. That flexibility combined with the ease of configuration is what sets them apart from the alternatives.
The i2i Stream from Aerielle might just be the answer to your wireless audio problems. In the box you get two small, black, plastic units. Each unit can act as either the sender or the receiver of audio. The audio can come from your iPhone, iPod, Mac or almost anything as long you can connect a 3.5mm jack to it. Similarly on the other end, as long as you can connect a 3.5mm jack to it, you can play out of it. This might be a stereo, headset or something else. Setup is as easy as connecting the two i2i units to either end of the system, selecting which unit should send and which should receive by pressing a button on each one, and setting each unit to the same channel. You have seven channels to pick from and they light up the middle button in different colors when you press it. Set each of the units to the same color and you’re set. There is also a volume control on each unit. You get two units in the box, but you can buy more and have one unit transmit and the others receive. That might make a great setup for meetings, presentations, or parties. In the box you also get two USB charger cables, two lanyards, and four audio cables. The audio quality is excellent, to me it sounds just as good as connecting my headset straight to my Mac or iPhone. Aerielle claims that you get up to around 10m distance, which I would say sounds about right. They also claim 5-7 hour battery life and even that seems about correct. I’ve used these units at work and when not in use for some periods, like meetings and lunch, they

At Macworld there were stands with iPod and iPhone cases everywhere. One that grabbed our attention was Sena. They seemed to have cool looking, high quality cases, different from many others. Their Dockable Case for iPhone 3G is made out of high quality leather. It feels well designed and manufactured. The rivet that screws onto the case and attaches to the belt clip can be removed and when it is, the case is almost flush, leaving no details sticking out. The main attraction of this case is of course that you don’t have to remove the iPhone from the case when you put it in the dock. Since I have a dock on my desk at work that’s something I appreciate. Sena has made a very nice looking case with some interesting design details. It’s well worth checking out.

Booq Taipan Skin for MacBook Pro The Taipan Skin for MacBook Pro- we tried the 15-inch model- would be a good choice for anyone wanting some basic protection for their Apple notebook. It’s made out of neoprene, that almost rubbery material that is both soft and protective at the same time, and has a fabric outside. There are three rubber strips on each side so if you lay it down on a smooth surface the case won’t slip. Zippers run along one long side and one short side, a bit unusual for a skin case like this. I’d say this is an excellent case but I would want some small pocket where I could stick a flash memory drive or a piece of paper. I’d also like the option of a carrying strap, if I so desired. Iqua Sun Bluetooth Headset by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com Iqua’s Bluetooth headset is about the size and weight of most other comparable units, even though Apple’s iPhone headset stands out as smaller. Pairing is really easy, and answering and hanging up on calls is as easy as one press on the button on the earpiece. That same button is also the solar panel that powers the whole unit. You can also power it with a power adapter connecting to a mini-USB port. The sound is excellent for this kind of headset. My main problem is that the piece that goes into the ear is uncomfortable for me, and none of the rubber attachments seemed to make it fit better. This is a highly individual experience though, I know that, and you may not have the same issue. If you want a good headset that you don’t have to charge much, then the Iqua is a good choice.
Kensington Mouse This is really an ingenious idea for a mouse. It works as a regular mouse, as a remote control for presentations (with laser pointer), and as a remote control for iTunes or other media player software. A small switch on the bottom decides which role the mouse will serve. A small piece you plug into a USB port sits inside the mouse in the battery compartment when not in use. It’s comfortable and easy to use just as a mouse, but of course it’s the dualfunctionality that makes it interesting. I would give it better score if it was Bluetooth as I can see myself loosing that little USB connector and then the mouse would be useless. I experienced some problems with the battery compartment door, which got a piece of plastic stuck in between all the time. That was highly annoying and seems like a stupid design flaw. Overall however it’s a good mouse that can serve two purposes.

Optoma Pico Pocket Projector by Magnus | magnus@shufflegazine.com This is a tough one to judge; on the one hand it’s such a cool concept, on the other it falls short of the expectations set by that coolness. The coolness is of course that this projector is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Weighing in at only 115g it’s “pico” (tiny) indeed. And it runs on batteries so with an iPod or iPhone you have a very portable movie setup. Battery life is, according to the manufacturer about two hours, which seems a bit optimistic to us. You can plug in an iPod or iPhone with a special cable (not included) that connects the Pico to the iPod dock connector. The Pico is charged through a mini-USB port to which you connect the power adapter. All AV input to the Pico goes through a single 2.5 standard jack. It accepts stereo audio and composite video. That means that unless you have some sort of converter for output from your Mac you cannot use the Pico as a projector for your Keynote presentations. In a dark room, you can put the projector perhaps three meters away from the wall or projection screen, giving you a projected picture of about one and a half meter across. Any further away and you’ll have a hard time making out what is being projected. In the average office environment you’d be hard pressed to see much detail even from one meter away. So it’s a really cool idea but it falls short in execution. Some of that is understandable because of it’s small size but I feel the technology is not quite there yet for these sort of projectors to be common place.

Thus far, Apple has kept a pretty tight reign on which apps make it into the iTunes App Store, disallowing entry of apps that “duplicated functions” of the apps that Apple built-in to iPhone. So it was a bit surprising when several new web browsing apps showed up in the App Store. Competition for Mobile Safari? Had Apple loosened up a bit? No, not really. While these new browsers generally brought features not included in the iPhone version of Safari, they all are based on Safari’s WebKit engine; essentially they are variations on Safari, not actually competing browsers. While these “new” browsers are welcome, it’s still a long way from having the option of using Firefox or Opera on you iPhone/iPod touch. That is not to say that the new browser entries are not worthy of your consideration or adoption; there are some worthwhile candidates among them. Let’s take a look at a few:
Edge Browser
While the rest of the new browsers are compatible with both iPhone and the iPod touch, the Egde Browser is not. It’s rather unclear why this limitation exists, as this browser brings very little to the table. Its main feature is that it is a “full screen” browser, meaning does not include an address bar or control bar. How do you specify the address you want to go to? You must close the app, open the Settings and enter the address in there. Although this app is free, that may be too high a price to bother with it.

Incognito and Squeaky
Both of these browsers are specifically designed for privacy in that they keep no history of sites you have visited using them; once you close the browser it erases all information about where in the web you have been. Handy if you’re visiting sites your mother wouldn’t approve of. Both apps have good basic controls, but Incognito has the added feature being able to specify a home page and to turn off automatic screen rotation. Oddly then, Incognito is the cheaper of the two at $0.99. Squeaky weighs in at $3.99.

Hot Browser
This is a pretty simple browser; its only real feature is when you shake your iPhone it randomly loads a “currently very popular web site”. How this is determined is not explained. In tests so far it has only offered about seven sites repeatedly, mostly Ruby programming and German tech news sites. Worthwhile sites, but a bit narrow in theme. Additionally, “Hot” lacks the ability to bookmark sites, so if it offers up one you really like you can’t save the link for later. But still, it’s an interesting novelty for the price. (Free) Perhaps the “currently very popular” web sites will show more variety in the future.
WebMate
WebMate seems to be the pick of the litter. It offers “tabbed browsing” after a fashion. When this feature is turned on, if you click on a link it is added to a list of pages to be viewed. Arrows at the bottom of the screen allow you navigate between pages in the list, and a trash icon allows removing the page currently being viewed. Unlike tabs in a standard browser the pages are not preloaded before you view them, each page loads when you switch to it, so WebMate doesn’t seem to gobble resources in the process. The maximum number of pages allowed in the list is not stated; since it doesn’t preload the pages, it easily handles more than 20 though. There are “On/Off” buttons at the bottom of the screen for the tabbing feature allowing you to switch between tabbed browsing and normal navigation. WebMate also saves the list of pages when you close the app and asks if you want to restore the previous session next time you open it. Although WebMate is not free, at $0.99 it’s a very worthwhile purchase.

The Internet Changed Our Lives
It’s no secret that the Internet has, and continues to change our lives. And while online shopping and watching videos of funny cats are significant, the most important change for many of us has been in how we communicate with others. When the Internet first became a public phenomenon email and chat via IRC were already well established, and many of us quickly came to enjoy the ease and convenience of the new communication methods. Email was much faster than postal letters- quickly re-dubbed “snail mail”and more versatile than telephone answering machines. Chatting online certainly had it’s advantages, although whether it was cheaper than a phone call greatly depended on the price of your Internet connection. Of course at that time the recipients of your digital communications were limited to your geek friends, early adopters of this newfangled technology, and those that happened to have net access at their job and were allowed to use it for personal communication. But then something even more significant started to happen, a phenomenon that is the true seed of today’s social networking boom. While communicating with friends and co-workers, we started to discover and get introduced to people we previously hadn’t known, and would not have met without the intervention of this new technology. At first it may have been on some common interest based online bulletin board, or by finding an email link on a web site we found worthwhile, but our circle of friends started to include people we didn’t actually meet in person, nor were likely to get together with because of distance.

Some have said that the advent of the Internet has harmed our social connectivity, since relationships are less and less based on physical interaction; we have become more “isolated”, they say. While there may be some accuracy to this, it greatly overlooks the actual nature and real advantages of developing friendships online. First of all, relationships that start online are more likely to spark from a common interest. Previously people tended to meet and develop friendships based on situation: attending the same school, working at the same job, living close to each other. These are all valid, but the Internet has facilitated more friendships based on many other factors, and common interests are at the top of that list. It is much easier online to find people that have the same hobbies, like the same shows or performers, or have similar circumstances as you. In the “real” world, the less common your interest the harder it has always been to find people that share it. Also in many ways the Internet can and has increased the amount of communication one has with those they already know. Email, messaging and websites have provided opportunities that fill gaps left by telephone and written communications, gaps in convenience as well as distance. Of course staying in touch online is not a substitute for actual face-to-face conversation or spending time with someone but the easy availability of multiple communication methods can make getting together in real life easier. With email, texting and instant messaging plans can be easily and more thoroughly negotiated, made and changed as need, and last minute interruptions are more easily dealt with. So, despite the naysayers, communicating through the Internet has in many ways removed barriers of time, distance and inconvenience that hamper the building of friendships, and can thus allow you the opportunity to get to know your friends even better, whatever your circumstance.

Facebook is currently the most popular social networking site and is a very good one. Started as way for college students to keep up with each other, it has continually grown to include additional “networks” such as businesses, geographic areas and other groups. In Facebook you can only see the full profile of someone that you are “friends” with; being friends requires the mutual consent of both parties. If another user is in your “network” you can see a partial profile before friend status is established. If another user is not in your network you will not be able to view the profile, but you can search for them by name and send a friend request. Facebook’s interface is relative uncluttered and has mainly small ads, so it is easy to quickly check for updates from time to time. It is also easier for those with less computer experience to use than some other sites, so it has gained users as more extended family members use it to keep in touch with each other. It will also allow you to to set up email updates to alert you when there has been activity related to your profileComments, photos, messages, etc. Facebook can get cluttered up with add-on, such as games, music, videos and survey apps, but that’s completely up to the user. If one prefers, they can just stick with the basic Facebook tools and keep it simple. Facebook works very well in the Safari browser; some addon features will require Adobe’s Flash plug-in, so make sure that it is up to date. FireFox for Mac OS X work most of the time with Facebook, but some of the newer features of the site occasionally cause hiccups. This will probably subside as FireFox is updated. There is a free iPhone/iPod touch app for Facebook available in the iTunes AppStore.

MySpace
MySpace formerly was the biggest social networking site until Facebook overtook it. Compared to Facebook MySpace looks cluttered even though they’ve cleared up the look over the past few years. Ads are larger and more prominent than on Facebook. MySpace does not limit profile viewing by network as the default so most of the time anyone can view anyone’s profile, even if they are not a member of the site. The exception to this is that a user can set their profile to private status, meaning that only their approved friends can view it. MySpace is often considered to be “a site for bands,” because many musicians have taken advantage of the ability to host their songs on the site and the open profile viewing to find and invite new fans.
Because of these things the site is generally considered to be mainly for the younger or more pop culture aware audience, and not as friendly to older or less hip users. Thus as online communities have spread to a wider and older audience, MySpace’s rate of new adopters has not kept up with that of Facebook. That being said, it is a very useful site for interacting with others. It is much more graphic intensive than Facebook, so naturally a newer computer and a good Internet connection will handle it better. MySpace works well with all the major Mac browsers. A MySpace app for iPhone/iPod touch is also available for free in the Itunes AppStore.

Isn’t that just a video site? Well, not just. YouTube also has substantial social elements to it, allowing one to have friends and followers, similar to the other sites. It also makes it easy to embed videos on another site, such as Facebook and MySpace. And one of the more popular aspects of socializing online for some time has been, “Hey, check out this cool video!” YouTube is compatible with Mac browsers, and there is a special app for it that come with the iPhone.

They are more geared towards building your professional network through listing your resume, your career history, your current position, and linking up with the professional contacts you have. They are less interested in users posting all kinds of content, adding applications, joining groups, etc., much of which is the hallmark of Facebook. Typically, at least in the case of LinkedIn, they are also stricter in terms of who you connect to. In LinkedIn’s case you have to know the email address of the person you’re trying to connect to. On Facebook, as we know, it’s easy to connect to anyone, as long as they accept the request, of course.

You basically establish a free account, start adding your contacts, which all have to confirm the relationship. You can also join groups on LinkedIn, depending on what you’re interested in. Many available positions are also announced on the site. The main downside of LinkedIn is that it’s heavily focused on North America.

LinkedIn also has a very nice iPhone Application (free; http://tinyurl.com/5t8e7w) with which you can do most things you can on their web site. Like Facebook’s iPhone application it gives you access to your contacts on the go. In many ways similar to Facebook’s iPhone application, the LinkedIn app is a must for every LinkedIn user.
Plaxo.com
Another major player in the business-oriented web site market is Plaxo.com, in fact they claim over 20 million users. After some initial controversy over Plaxo sending out emails to everyone in someone’s address book as soon as any details were changed, the company changed the practice. The main selling point of Plaxo is to keep your contacts in sync between online, computer and mobile devices. Plaxo has also moved into the territory of sites such as Facebook with their Pulse service, built for users to share their photos, blogs, post your status, videos, and more.
Xing.com
Although LinkedIn and Plaxo are major players in North America, Europe and also in the Middle East, other web sites are very popular. Germany-based Xing.com is one good example of a web site that has taken off in the Middle East, presumably because of the large expat population in countries like the UAE. If you’re looking for UAE business contacts, for example, you’re likely to actually find more relevant results on Xing compared to LinkedIn.

Some of the ones we present here run on other platforms as well, but they are all good Mac applications in different ways. It’s not easy to give you suggestions as to which one you should get if you’re just starting out with Twitter. However, my recommendation is to start with Twitterrific, move on to Twhirl, and eventually, if you really get into Twitter, try TweetDeck.

(http://tinyurl.com/ym7bhq) – Free or $14.95 Twitterrific is twitter-licious, that’s for sure. In terms of a goodlooking interface it beats all the other applications hands down. It’s available in a free version, which displays ads once in a while, or a paid $14.95 version. If you want something simple and straight-forward that is also nice to look at, get Twitterrific.

Twhirl
(http://www.twhirl.org/) – Free Twhirl is an application built on Adobe AIR, a crossplatform technology that allows development of one application for multiple platforms, ie. Windows, Mac, and Linux. As such it may not feel totally Macish, but you’ll be surprised how well it plays along as a part of Mac OS X. Support for multiple accounts is a nice aspect of Twhirl and it’s full of functionality for different things, like TwitPic. Twhirl is currently the best compromise between power-user functionality and ease of use.
TweetDeck
(http://www.tweetdeck.com/ beta/) – Free TweetDeck, also built on Adobe AIR, is for Twitter-oholics; it’s like using Twitter if you’ve taken too many double-espressos. There is information everywhere and you can customize it to show you even more if you like. Someone on my Twitter list asked the other day if anyone thought that using TweetDeck makes you Twitter more and I’d say the answer is yes, it does. Arguably, the strength of TweetDeck is the way it organizes your tweets and contacts. You get each type of tweets in separate columns. You can also create your own Groups and put certain Twitter friends in them. So you could have one Group for just Dubai Twitters, one
March ‘09 www.shufflegazine.com for Work, and one for Family, for example. One nice detail is that it shows you a live count of the API calls. If you’re a power-tweeter, get TweetDeck.
TwitterFox
(http://tinyurl.com/2bmr3q) – Free TwitterFox is an add on to FireFox and once installed it sits at the bottom status bar, unobtrusively and out of the way. In my view, TwitterFox is not quite good enough to be your regular Twitter application but it’s good to have perhaps on a notebook on the go since it’s doesn’t require much resources of the computer and very easily stays out of the way until you need it.

(http://thecosmicmachine. com/) – $15 EventBox definitely stands out in the competition. Not only because it’s a true Mac application but because it supports many web services besides Twitter. You also get support for Facebook, Flickr, RSS (Google Reader, for example) and Reddit in the same application.
So most of your social networking, web 2.0 stuff, can be done from within EventBox. It has a very slick and Mac-y interface, with subtle animations, shadows and things. It looks and works great. Power-tweeters will probably look elsewhere though, like at TweetDeck. EventBox is still in beta but it’s stable enough to use on a daily basis.

Syrinx
(http://tinyurl.com/6kpkfw) – Free Syrinx, a Mac application, has a some aspects to it that may attract tweeters. There is a “Pause” button; by clicking on it you temporarily stop Syrinx from checking for new tweets, a rather handy feature if you’re on the phone, running to a meeting, or something like that. A quick click on “Resume” when you’re back and it gets tweets again. It keeps your latest tweet always at the top of the list of tweets, thereby reminding you of what you said last. That can be pretty handy sometimes. Overall though, the interface isn’t great and it lacks functionality like Twitpic support.

With the fast connections of Wi-Fi and 3G, the camera on the iPhone, and the amazing interface it’s easier to tweet away than on any other mobile device. Here is a small selection of Twitter applications for iPhone with brief descriptions of what makes them special.
Twitterrific
(Free or $9.99; http://tinyurl.com/5tfeqa) Twitterrific is a cool app and it’s the one I first tried doing Twitter with on my iPhone. Since I was already using the Mac-version of Twitterrific it made sense to try the iPhone version too. And they have the same feeling to them, with a very slick-looking interface. The interface is very nice and makes better use of the iPhone’s special characteristics than the competition. There is a free version and there is a paid-for $9.99 version. With the free version you get a commercial ad scrolling by every now and again. It’s not really too disturbing so I think most users will be okay with the free one. What stopped me from using Twitterrific was that it only supports one Twitter account and once I started Tweeting also on Shufflegazine’s account I needed something else. Twitterrific supports posting to Twitpic and map links.

Twinkle
(Free; http://tinyurl.com/5mg48s) Twinkle is a Twitter client that some people love but a lot of people, including myself, don’t really get what’s so great about it. I guess the main selling point of Twinkle, even though it’s free, is the location functionality. When you post with Twinkle it’ll post your location as well, at least if you give it permission to do so. Then you can search for other users within a certain range from you and they can also find you based on your location. There is similar functionality now in Tweetie but it’s not as immediately available as in Twinkle. That functionality comes with a downside however, at least in some people’s eyes, is that it requires a Tapulous account (http://tapulous.com/). The account is free but it seems superfluous to need another account in addition to the Twitter account just to use a Twitter client.
Twittelator
(Free or $4.99; http://tinyurl.com/5lq36m) Twittelator to me feels a bit like they’ve been trying to cram too much functionality into the application and everything just doesn’t make sense in terms of usability. It’s not a bad app, in fact some people will stick to Twittelator over the other ones, but for me it just doesn’t feel right. I paid $4.99 for the Pro version and it supports multiple accounts, posting to Twitpic, links, and more. But the killer feature of Twittelator must be that it supports limited copy and paste, but only within the application though and only in the Pro version. Much like with TweetDeck on Mac you can create groups of Twitter friends in Twittelator, something that will appeal to some users.
Tweetie
($2.99; http://tinyurl.com/5kvay8) So finally on to my current favorite Twitter application for iPhone, Tweetie. To me it’s the best blend of iPhone-suitable interface and functionality. It’s perhaps not as configurable as Twittelator or as cool as Twitterrific but it’s a joy to use. It supports, of course, posting to Twitpic and map links, multiple accounts, and much more. Little things, like how you swipe your finger over a tweet to reveal actions you can perform on it, in my mind, make Tweetie the better choice for most users. Sure it’s not free but I think $2.99 is a small price to pay for this application.

Everyone knows how a certain section of US media drummed up support for the US invasion of Iraq or also how the complicity of a certain news channel led to confusion about George Bush’s election win in 2000. Today, the world has changed, information is our fingertips, you can find whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want it. Governments tried to extend the censorship to the Internet, but are increasingly finding it difficult to do so. Today, you and I are connected in more ways than one. Imagine 25 years back, you and I could talk to anyone only within a certain geographical limit. You would read, hear and see only local news or important international news. But, the internet changed all that. Today we know what’s happening anywhere in the world the instant it happens thanks to Satellite TV, the Internet and the ubiquitous mobile phone. But, how

The answer lies in a question asked by a person whom I follow on Twitter to another tweeter. “Just a curious question. Twitter, 20 tabs, 500 feeds – do you read the local newspapers? (I don’t!)“, this Twitter user asked. This may be an exaggeration or even an one-off case, but this is a trend. I myself have stopped reading Gulf News in print, rather prefer reading it on the web. This trend has even led to the mainstream media changing the way it covers events. The New Hampshire primary in the US was live blogged by the New York Times, for example. Closer to home, Gulf News covered the unveiling of the Atlantis with a live update on its web site complete with pictures albeit with some delay but still faster than you could see in the print edition. When the US Airways airplane landed on the Hudson river, I came to know about it from Twitter. I was outside and I was easily following the updates about it. In fact, I feared I may miss out on something if I didn’t update fast enough. BBC claims that the first ever pictures of the Hudson river incident was first up on Twitter before any of the so called mainstream media could get it. When the terrorists struck in Mumbai, Twitter was where I got the news. Mumbai Police, in a bid to make sure the terrorists did not know the plan, started to block all TV channels. Since, I was in Dubai, I tweeted the updates to those who couldn’t see it on their TV. In fact, there was even requests floating around saying don’t update Twitter as terrorists may be following them.

One guy was taking photos at the scene and uploading them onto his blogs. In an admission by the mainstream media about the growing role of Twitter and other social media, BBC, CNN and others interviewed the various bloggers, tweeters who were covering the event live at the scene. What has spawned social journalism? The answer lies in how easy it is to create a Twitter account or a blog. The cost is absolutely nil and the potential reach is truly global. You do not need to be a big media house and pay through the nose for a satellite transmission feed. You can broadcast yourself to the entire world using the iSight camera and the built-in microphone on your Mac. With such easy access to broadcasting your thoughts, views, and videos, there is going to be an increase in social journalism. Performance
There is plenty of power in the MacBook Pro. With a Core 2 Duo Processor running at speeds from 2.4GHz to 2.93GHz, this notebook can truly be a desktop replacement. It has 6MB on-chip shared L2 Cache to further boost the speed. All this coupled with a fast 1066MHz frontside bus, makes the MacBook Pro a true speed daemon in the world of notebooks.
Memory
The MacBook Pro has two slots for memory chips (SO-DIMMs) and if you put the maximum supported amount of RAM in, you get 4GB, which should be plenty for most users’ needs.
Communications
Also in this respect the MacBook Pro is well equipped. It has the Airport Extreme 802.11n wireless networking we’ve come to expect in all Macs, as well as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and Gigabit Ethernet. And if that isn’t enough, you can always plug it in to an Ethernet network.
Display and Graphics
Gamers should be delighted with MacBook Pro’s graphics. Resoltions of 1400×900 on the 15-inch model and 1920×1200 on the 17-inch model. This is powered by NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT processor with 512MB memory combined with a GeForce 9400M processor with 256MB memory, makes this a killer gaming machine, and it’s portable.
Battery
The 15-inch model has an exchangeable 50-watt battery, which, according to Apple, gives you up to five hours of usage. The 17-inch model has a built-in 95-watt battery giving up to eight hours of usage, according to Apple.
Storage
As far as notebooks goes, the MacBook Pro has plenty of storage. It ranges from 200GB up to 320GB. There is also an option of getting a 128GB SSD (Solid State) drive in the 15-inch model and 128GB or 256GB SSD in the 17-inch model. Of course all MacBook Pro models also come with Apple’s SuperDrive for writing DVDs.
Expandability
Since this is a notebook, expandability is an issue. The only thing you can expand yourself is the RAM and the hard drive in the 15-inch model. If you want more storage you have to utilize the USB or FireWire ports (it has FireWire 800), or the ExpressCard slot.

What you need
You need an Intel Mac with 512MB of RAM (1GB or more memory is highly recommended). As of the latest version when writing this, 2.0.6, you need around 30MB of hard disk space for installing VirtualBox itself and you should allocate at least 5GB-10GB for every virtual machine you install.
In part one of this series (Shufflegazine February 2009), we looked at what is virtualization, what are the benefits of virtualization, and the specific product we’ll work with called VirtualBox. In this part we will show you how to install VirtualBox and Windows XP.

1. First download the latest version from http://www. virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads. Look for the version for Intel Macs. 2. When downloaded, double-click the file and open it, then run (double-click) “VirtualBox.mpkg”. 3. Follow the instructions until the installation is finished. 4. After a successful installation, run VirtualBox from the “Applications” folder.

For most users it’s better to run Windows XP in Virtual Box compared to Vista. XP is faster, lighter, the license is most likely cheaper, and most software runs in XP just as well as in Vista.
Setting up Windows XP
After installing VirtualBox you need to install the guest OS, in our case we’ll install Windows XP. You need an original Windows XP CD. 1. Make sure VirtualBox is running. 2. Click “New” in the toolbar and the “Create New Virtual Machine” wizard opens. Click “Next”.
3. In the “Memory” page set the RAM to 256 or more if you wish. Be careful not to go more than 25% to 30% of your system RAM because it makes Mac OS slow. 4. In the next page, type “Windows XP” (or any other meaningful name) and choose “Windows XP” from the OS type drop down. Click “Next” to continue. 5. To setup Windows you need to create a virtual hard disk. Click on “New” to open the hard disk creation wizard. 6. Select “Dynamically expanding image” as virtual disk image type. This helps saving disk space as it grows according to the requirements. 7. Leave the virtual disk “Location” and “Size” as it is in the next page. 8. In the “Summary” page click “Finish” to apply the changes.
March ‘09 www.shufflegazine.com 9. You can see that a new OS is added to the list in VirtualBox’s main window and the status is “Powered Off”. Click “Start” on the toolbar to run the virtual OS for the very first time. 10. The “First Run Wizard” shows right after you start the virtual machine. Click “Next” to start.

12. After selecting the proper media, pass the summary by clicking “Finish”. The system will boot immediately. 13. You will see that the Windows setup appears and you can continue with the standard setup routine. It could take several minutes, so be patient and get a cup of green tea.

11. In the “Select Installation Media” page choose the proper media from which you want to install Windows. It is usually the drive in which you have the Windows disc.
Guest Additions
After Windows is installed you need to first install the “Guest Additions”. The Windows you just finished installing is a guest OS and needs some extra software to work perfectly within the Mac OS X host. 1. With the Windows XP running in VirtualBox, select “Devices” > “Install Guest Additions”. 2. Continue with the setup wizard and reboot the system when prompted. 3. If the setup did not start for any reason, it might be that the “Guest Additions” disk is not properly mounted. Select “Devices” > “Mount CD/DVD-ROM” > “CD/DVD-ROM Image…” and add the ISO image to the list. This was the second part of our VirtualBox article. Update Your Status
A central functionality on FaceBook is that you can post what your status is so all your friends can see how you feel or what you’re doing. Just tap the Status icon in the top left corner of the screen, enter your message, and tap the Post button. Being able to update your status on the go with an iPhone makes FaceBook much more useful.

Your Contacts
Of course you have access to all your FaceBook contacts and their profile pages. Tap the Friends button in the bottom menu bar, find your friend’s name in the list, tap on their name and you’ll see their FaceBook profile page.

See What Your Friends Are Up To
On the application homepage and the News Feed tab you can see what all your friends are up to. The bar just under the News Feed tab starts with Top Stories, but swipe your finger to move to the right and you’ll see Status Updates, Photos, Groups, and more. If you want to reply to what any of your friends have posted, just tap the green plus sign icon, type in your reply and tap the Post button.

Chat With Friends
A function added to FaceBook fairly recently is that you can chat with your FaceBook contacts via the web site. That’s now also built in to the iPhone application. Click on the Chat button in the bottom menu bar. Then click on the right arrow next to the name of any of your contacts that are available and chat away.

Your Profile Page
Your FaceBook profile page is available to you. It gives a quick overview of what you’re doing, what you’ve been posting and uploading, and more.

Upload Photos
Sharing photos is a big part of FaceBook and of course you can upload photos from your iPhone. Tap the Camera icon on the top right of the screen, then select whether you are going to take a new photo or use an existing one. This is a great way to take photos on the go and share them immediately with friends.

How To Twitter With Twhirl

كيف تستخدم “تويرل”؟ Twhirl (http://www.twhirl.org/) is a free Twitter client for Mac, Windows and Linux. It uses Adobe AIR, a technology for developing and running software on different operating systems. Twhirl positions itself in the middle of the Twitter client pack for Mac in terms of suitability for new Tweeters. For beginners Twitterrific is probably a better choice and for real power-tweeters TweetDeck is more interesting. See our overview of Twitter applications for Mac in this issue of Shufflegazine.

Start Twhirl and enter your Twitter username in the box next to “Twitter”. Click the plus sign, click the Twitter username, then click the “Connect” button. Enter your password and click the “Login” button. Twhirl will log you in and show you the window with your tweets. You can now close the Twhirl preference window.

To post a public tweet, you just type in what you’re going to say in the text box at the bottom of the Twhirl window and press the Enter key. You will notice that what you posted now appears at the top of the tweets in the Twhirl window.

Public Reply
If you want to make a public reply to someone else’s tweet, hover your mouse over their icon and click on the top left corner where you see a small icon appear. Then type in your reply in the text box at the bottom of the Twhirl window and press the Enter key.

Private Message
If you want to send a direct message to another user, meaning the message will only be seen by that person, click on the small icon at the bottom of the Twhirl window called “Friends/ Followers”. Find the user you want to send the direct message to, hover the mouse over their icon, and click on the small icon in the top right of their icon. Type in your message in the text box, press Enter.
Post Photo
If you want to post a photo or other picture as a tweet it’s easy with Twhirl. Click on the camera icon, select the file you want to post, click the “Select” button, then click the “Post image” button. The picture is uploaded and a tweet is created with a link to that picture. To finish, enter some text that describes the picture, if you like to, then press Enter.

Tweetie (http://tinyurl.com/6fm9eh) is currently my favorite application for iPhone and iPod touch for Twitter. In this brief tutorial I’ll show you some of the functionality of Tweetie. I’ll assume you have already downloaded and installed Tweetie from the App Store ($2.99). Since in Tweetie you can have several Twitter accounts set up at the same time, most of the instructions here refer to having one of those accounts open. Remember to be careful when you post a tweet or follow someone, that you have the right account open.

From the Tweetie “Accounts” page, tap the plus sign icon. Fill in the username and the password and tap “Done”. Then tap on the name of the account you want to open and activate.
With your account open, just tap on “More” and then “My Profile” to see your Twitter profile. Note that you cannot edit your profile with Tweetie, just view it. From the profile page you can also see who you follow, who follows you, and more.

With your account open, tap on “More” and then “Search”. Type in what you want to search for and press “Search”. You will see a list of tweets and tweeters and can chose to follow them from here.
From the Tweetie “Accounts” page, tap the account you want to check and you will see a new page with all the public tweets for that account. Click on one tweet to reply to it. When you get to the bottom of the list of tweets, tap “Load more…” to see more tweets.

5Post a Tweet
With your account open, tap on the new tweet button at the top right of the screen. Type in your text and tap the “Send” button. Once posted you should see your tweet at the top of the list.
Your 6Post Location
Similar to posting a photo, start a new tweet and tap the Map Link button (the round icon with a cross on it). If you want to add a link to your current location, tap “Add Map Link”; if you want to update your profile location based on where you are, tap “Update Profile Location”. Tweetie will insert a short URL that links to a map online with your location highlighted. You can enter a message too if you like. Finish by tapping “Send”.
Check and 7 Post Direct Messages
Tap “Messages” at the bottom of the screen. That will show you all direct messages you have sent and received. If you want to send a private Direct Message, go to the profile page of the user you want to send it to, then tap “Send Direct Message”, type in your message (notice it says “Direct Message” at the top) and tap “Send”.

8Post a Photo
With the screen for a new tweet open, tap the camera icon. On the next screen tap “Take photo” if you want to take a new photo or “Choose existing photo” if you want to select a photo or picture that is already on the iPhone. If you choose to take a new photo, position the camera and tap the green camera button. If the photo is okay, tap “Use Photo”. Back on the new tweet screen, type in a message you want to post with the photo and tap “Send”.
and 9Check Post Replies In the latest version of Tweetie (currently 1.2) you will see public messages to you highlighted in gray. Public messages you send are light green, private messages you send are. If you want to reply to a tweet and do it in public, slide your finger left or right over the tweet you want to reply to, then tap the left-pointing arrow. On the next screen, type in your message and tap “Send”.
