I had a discussion recently with a group of college students about the reasons behind anyone wanting to take part in something like Shuffle without getting paid for it. Since they couldn’t really understand why someone would do that, I tried to reason with them and get them to understand that people don’t just do things for money. For me the reward is the accomplishment in itself and when I hear people saying they’ve read Shuffle and it helped them with something or that they enjoyed reading it that’s a great feeling. I think I’ve said it before but to publish something like Shuffle has been a long-time dream of mine and it’s been true now for one year which is more than most people can say about their big dreams. For that I am very thankful. But it wouldn’t have been possible without the help from a long line of people. Thank you all. Looking toward the future we’re excited about all the possibilities that lie ahead of us. It’s up to us to pick up these opportunities and make of them the best issues of Shuffle we can. So let’s not rest too long on our success. We have a busy Apple year ahead of us, and we want to be able to bring you a better Shuffle. In this issue we have a new feature, which we hope to be able to bring you in every issue. It’s a page with the latest Apple news brought to you by James Badcock. Brian’s series of articles about switching to Mac continues in this issue and Zaid has worked hard on bringing you great articles in Arabic. We hope you enjoy this and future issues of Shuffle, and may we be blessed with many more years of success. The cover this month is a version of the cover we had one year ago. Then we had the idea of putting EMUG member Appleholic on the cover, striking a pose, and putting him against a striking green background. We thought we’d update that cover a bit, still use Appleholic, but change the color. Still eye-catching, don’t you think? Looking back at the covers we’ve had on Shuffle over the year I think we’ve had some good ones and some bad ones. The cover is often the last thing that gets finished when we create Shuffle each month and it’s always a hard decision. We hope in the coming year that we can feature more photos and artwork from our readers, so if you have an idea, send it to us.

Confessions of a by Brian (EmiratesMac)

Well I’m now a one-month veteran as a user of Mac OS X. There is so much that a Windows-to-Mac switcher needs to initially absorb. In this article I will focus on some of the main differences and concepts that a switcher must adapt to, but will limit my discussion mainly to two inbuilt applications of OS X: the Finder and Spotlight. It is important at the outset that the reader understands that any comparisons I make are between Mac OS X and Windows XP systems. One of the most noticeable differences I have found as a Windows-to-Mac switcher is that contextual menus that were available to me on a Windows computer by right clicking the mouse are accessed on a Mac by holding Ctrl while pressing the mouse. I later discovered, however, that this same right-clicking functionality does exist on my Mac mouse, but only after first configuring the primary and secondary mouse buttons (Apple Menu > Systems Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Highlight “Mouse” tab > Select left side of mouse as primary and right side as secondary - or vice versa if you are a left-handed user). Another thing a switcher must come to terms with is that the Ctrl key is not used in copy/paste keyboard shortcuts on a Mac (i.e. copy is Command + C). While this is initially frustrating, you soon realize how much more efficient it is to simply slide your thumb left or right of the space key to the command key to carry out cut/ paste actions. One of the first things that I would encourage any switcher to do is learn about the Finder. Although the name suggests it is an application that finds things, it’s much more: It not only enables viewing of folders in different views (i.e. Icon, List, Column and Cover Flow views), but also enables items within a window to be sorted and grouped by various criteria (e.g. kind of file, date, item name etc.). The Finder’s sidebar also holds shortcuts to locations on the user’s system.

One cool feature of the Finder is the ability to preview files using Quick Look (Select item > File menu > Quick Look, or just click on an icon and press the spacebar). This allows you to preview files as a thumbnail image if it is an image, or as small version of a text document that you can resize if need be. Another cool feature of Mac OS X is spring-loaded folders. Instead of clicking folder upon folder to place an item deep within the hard drive hierarchy, you can simply drag the item over to the first folder in the hierarchy and the folder will spring open, revealing its contents. Drag the item to the next folder in the hierarchy, and so on, and each subsequent folder will continue to spring open – until you reach the final destination folder in which you wish to place the particular item. I was initially surprised to find that unlike Windows, file extensions are not shown by default in a Mac. To view these go to Finder menu > Preferences > Advanced Tab (Select “Show all file extensions”). A common mistake I repeatedly make as a Windows-to-Mac switcher is the tendency to click on the furthermost clear button in the upper-right corner of the Finder window in an attempt to close it – this action closes the side bar and tool bar. However, simply clicking this clear button again will return Finder to its original view. A nice security feature that a switcher will appreciate is the ability

to empty trash in a way that deleted documents can never again be recovered by a third party utility. This is done because Finder menu > Secure Empty Trash erases that part of the hard drive containing the file. A switcher is sure to be confused by the term “Alias,” which is the Mac version of a Windows “Shortcut”. Although both are methods of creating a file that is a link to an item elsewhere in the file system, the OS X creation method is much more powerful than that used by Windows XP for the following reason: Because XP shortcuts reference both the name and the file path, shortcut links will break if you move or rename the original item. This can cause delays while XP tries to relocate the linked item. In OS X, however, each file in the file system is given a

Mac Switcher unique ID number. This prevents broken links from ever being created; regardless of whether an item has been moved or renamed. The switcher is sure to appreciate the power of Spotlight, which is an amazing search application because search scans are based on metadata, meaning that even if the search term appears as a word within a file, it will still show as a search result. Another nice aspect is that Spotlight is always available, no matter what application is open, and can be accessed by clicking on the magnifying icon the top of the desktop screen. I absolutely love the ability to do so much within Spotlight: launch applications, look-up definitions or synonyms of words,

Wikipedia entries related to the search term, or even perform arithmetic calculations. It even interprets the type of search info. that a switcher might be looking for. For example, Macs use the term “Background” for what Windows users call “Wallpaper “ – if a switcher were to type the term “Wallpaper”, Spotlight would associate these two terms and come up with “Change Background” as a result. Another really sweet feature is the ability to click “Show All” to show results in a Finder-like window. This then allows you to further narrow searches by clicking search menu options at the top (e.g. by contents or by file name) This search can be even further narrowed by pressing the plus button to add a new condition

(e.g. Kind is PDF AND Name matches Shuffle). These are some very powerful search functions, and are sure to be appreciated by the switcher who will soon realize the limitations of XP’s built-in search, which works fine for simple searching but is severely limited and much slower in comparison to Spotlight. There is so much many more cool features I could add to those already mentioned concerning Finder and Spotlight – each of which is sure to surprise and delight a switcher. In my next article I hope to touch on my discoveries regarding the Dock, File Sharing, and iLife applications. There is still so much to learn, and such little time!

Close Encounters With The Founders by Sumudu Gunaratne (EmiratesMac)

With this April publication of Shuffle, the EmiratesMac User Group (EMUG) in the UAE is celebrating our 1st Anniversary. EMUG’s first meeting was held in August 2006 and interest is already high with over 10-15 members attending regular meetings. The EMUG site, with its online forum, has grown to over 2200 registered members at the time of this writing. The EMUG meetings are held monthly and are informal gatherings. There is usually time for members to chat and discuss about anything and everything related to Macs, and about any other Apple gear. Presentations are also given on topics suggested by members. There’s also time for user tips and raffles during these meetings. EMUG has become what it is today mainly due to the lovely couple Magnus & Crystal, the co-founders of the User Group, and to their secondto-none passion, commitment and dedication in running & managing the User Group. In this anniversary issue, we are delighted to have been able to talk to Magnus and Crystal to give us a few insights. Sumudu: Give us a brief background of yourselves, and of how you came to be in the UAE ? Crystal: Magnus is from Sweden and I’m from the United States. On the personal side, we met when Magnus was living in Scotland and after living there for a few years we returned to the U.S., where we worked for a couple of years before finally moving to the Emirates in 2005. It was Magnus’ work that brought us here, and we wanted to try something different and it sure has been different. Sumudu: When did you first get into using Macs and what has been your experience thus far? Magnus: My first experience was around 1986-1987 with a Mac Plus, sitting in

a corner of the office where I worked in summer. I started playing with it and was instantly hooked. Especially clear in my mind is the first time I played with MacPaint, MacWrite, and the ImageWriter printer they had there. It was amazingly easy to create nice graphics and things like that, something that was unheard of on the PC side at the time. Later I started programming Macs and doing support and reviews of software for MacWorld in Sweden. The first Mac I bought was an IIcx. Since then, I’ve owned or used pretty much every Mac model made. Crystal: For me the first time I used a Mac was in high school. It was one of the small compact ones, but I’m not sure which model. We used to do the student newspaper, banners and posters for events - that sort of thing. Then, like so many others, I drifted away from Mac and it wasn’t until I met Magnus that I started using Macs again.

to Apple we were suddenly accepted in August of 2006, and we had our first real meeting in Abu Dhabi with four participants (the two of us included!). Crystal: It’s important to remember that we’re still the only registered Apple User Group in the Emirates, and one of very few in the Middle East. There are other Apple User Groups but they don’t seem to have gone through the trouble of registering with Apple, but we felt that was important to gain some legitimacy for our activities. Sumudu: Tell us something about how you manage and run the Emiratesmac.

Sumudu: What inspired you both to set up Emiratesmac. com and the User Group in the UAE? Magnus: EmiratesMac.com started as my personal blog about Mac stuff in the UAE. It was started following our frustration with buying a Mac mini after moving here in 2005. It was hard to find out where to buy one, and doing a price comparison between stores was hard because pricing information was hardly available. So I started it at http://emiratesmac.wordpress.com, and it was a few months before Crystal even knew that site was there. In March 2006 we registered the EmiratesMac.com domain and started what has grown into the site you see today. The User Group idea we had in early 2006, and in May 2006 we submitted the application to Apple. After many inquiries

com website and the User Group, in spite of your busy work schedules? Crystal: It’s tough sometimes. Magnus gets up really early every morning and does some work before he leaves for his job. During the night he goes through messages posted, and through his RSS feeds to find out general developments within the Apple world. I do the same, but in the morning - and both of us try to check the site throughout the day as often as we can. It’s always fun to check the site and see new messages. Magnus: Something that takes up a lot of time for us is meeting with people and

companies to discuss various things like Shuffle, sponsorships, etc. It’s probably not something that most users and members think about - but things that may appear simple to accomplish, can actually require a lot of time spent meeting and negotiating before they’re official. So that takes up a lot of time. Another thing is that we check all new users on the site and all posts made. Some spam posts we manage to capture through filters, but some always slips through. Overall, it’s a matter of finding time when you can; and making the most of it. For example, I continuously make little notes about ideas for articles or blog posts and when I need to write an article, for example, I come back to this list. Crystal: Then of course there’s Shuffle. Writing articles and doing the layout every month is like a full-time job in itself, and I’m amazed that we’ve been able to sustain it for one year now. But we love it, so all the effort that goes into producing each issue is not something we think about too much. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not complaining. Shuffle is a ‘labor of love’, so it’s okay.

Sumudu: What tools and software and stuff do you use to run the EMUG site? Magnus: Most of my work is done with a Mac Pro, but I also have a MacBook Pro on which I write a lot of Shuffle articles because it’s mobile. In terms of software I use the same as most other users; Microsoft Office for Mac, iWork, iLife, Safari and Apple Mail. For administration and development of the site, I use BBEdit and Coda for coding, Transmit for FTP, Photoshop for graphics and Flash for some ads and other things. For some administration things I’ve developed our own systems and applications in PHP and MySQL; like the membership register, training scheduling,

and more. Crystal: I do most of the administrative work for the group and the site, and I also use most of the same software as Magnus, except on my MacBook Air. I manage the user group membership register with a web application that Magnus developed, and I also use some specialized applications for things like invoicing. Magnus: Let me add that what has made a big difference for us in running the site and the group is our Blackberry devices. We’d love to use iPhones but with the volume of emails and browsing we do ‘on the go’ the unlimited Blackberry plans are unbeatable right now. With my Blackberry I can check the status of the site and even do some simple administration of it, if needed. Sumudu: What challenges do you face in managing a community website like Emiratesmac.com and the User Group, particularly in the UAE where users come from wide range of cultural backgrounds? Crystal: The main challenge is to try to get people to understand the idea of a user group. In Europe and North America it’s an established concept; a group of people gathered around a common interest, who help each other out in various ways. But here it doesn’t seem very popular or common as a way of organizing people, so that’s a challenge. We often say EMUG is a non-profit, voluntary-based organization, or a sort of club. Following on that challenge is the difficulties with trying to get people to pitch in to help run the site, Shuffle, etc. And we don’t mean money necessarily. I think a lot of that stems from the misunderstandings around what EMUG is. And this concept of ‘pitching in’ refers to individual users who might consider becoming members - as well as to companies that could contribute in other ways, such as advertising in Shuffle. We often have to explain what we’re doing, and the first question we usually get is “So, how do you make money on this?” Then we have to explain that we’re not doing this to make money, we’re doing this for the community. But we believe that the approach of supporting the community and doing things to help

our members is what’s going to prevail in the long run. Sumudu: What does the future hold for EmiratesMac User Group and Shuffle? Magnus: We hope we can continue to provide a friendly and helpful platform, offline as well as online, for anyone who is interested in Apple stuff to come together to get help, to share their experience and help others, and to have a good time. We think we’ve managed to do that so far, and we hope we can continue. This is definitely a ‘labor of love’ and, as Crystal already said, few people ever understand what this is all about. It’s true that we require more income to be able to grow and even continue doing what we do, but we’ll keep doing this as long as we’re able to - because it’s an important service and we think it serves an important need. Crystal: We want to make more interesting and useful things at meetings so that we can get more members to come to them. This may mean more extensive presentations or demos at meetings, or something completely different. We also want to keep producing a high-quality Shuffle and the next major change for Shuffle, I think, is to increase the number of pages in Arabic. But that will require more people to write in Arabic for Shuffle. Sumudu: What is your message to the Mac community and the User Group in this anniversary issue of Shuffle? Magnus: This is just the beginning. We often have to remind ourselves that it has been only one year that Shuffle has been printed and only about two years since the EmiratesMac.com site was first set up. Mac Models 101 Selecting what Mac to buy can sometimes be daunting, especially if you’re new to Macs. Therefore we put together this short guide to the different models of Macintosh computers currently on offer from Apple. This guide only offers some brief pointers. To evaluate what you should buy, we advice you spend some time with the Mac in a store.

Mac mini The introductory model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. Don’t take its small size as a sign that it’s slow. It comes with a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.0GHz, which is plenty for most things you’d want to do. It can also take up to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive as well as a SuperDrive. Its limitation lies in that it’s very hard to upgrade, and it has integrated Intel graphics, so don’t expect to play the latest 3D games on a mini. Price: from AED2699.

iMac The ultimate home desktop computer, the iMac is the all-in-one that packs a punch. You can get a 20 or 24inch screen, up to 4GB of RAM, and 1TB of hard drive. The iMac’s selling point is the integrated package, which also happens to look really awesome. Price: from AED6199.

Mac Pro For the ultimate in power and flexibility, you can’t beat Mac Pro but it’s not cheap. You can get it up to an eightcore configuration, 16GB RAM, four 750GB hard drives, and two optical drives. You also have a selection when it comes to graphics card. Price: from AED11999.

MacBook Air The MacBook Air is definitely the ultimate Mac in terms of portability. But even though it weighs in at about 1kg, it’s no lightweight in terms of performance. With a processor from 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, and 80GB hard drive it should perform most tasks with east. An external SuperDrive is optional. Price: from AED8199.

MacBook Pro For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. But no one can say that the 17-inch model is light and easy to transport. The 15-inch model is slightly smaller, and both sport a gorgeous, large display. It has up to 2.6GHz Core2Duo processors, 4GB or RAM, and 250GB of hard drive. If its power and large screens you want, MacBook Pro is your choice. Price: from AED7999.

MacBook The main attraction of the MacBook is obviously its size. It has a 13.3-inch display which has enough resolution for most things (but is limited for tasks such as design), a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.2GHz, RAM up to 4GB, and a hard drive up to 250GB. The MacBook is a lot of power in a small package. If mobility is your primary concern, this is your choice. Price: from AED4999.

In every issue of Shuffle we present the current models of Apple’s iPods, what their main features are, and the starting price. Hopefully this can serve as a simple and quick guide to the iPods so you can make a more informed buying decision.

iPod Classic This is the iPod we have known and loved for so many years, hence the name Classic. With a large display, plenty of storage space, this is still the king of the iPods even though many new models have been released. Comes in versions of 80GB and 160GB and is available in silver and black. Price: from AED1199.

iPod Touch iPod Nano Available in different colors, the Nano is the ultimate fashion accessory. With a wonderfully crisp display it can play video and the small size means you can slip it into your pocket and take it anywhere. Comes in 4GB and 8GB versions in five different colors. This is iPhone without the phone. You get wifi for web browsing with Safari, full-featured iPod of course for music and video, and the wonderful iPhone multitouch interface. Comes in 8GB and 16GB versions Price: from AED1399.

iPod Shuffle This miniscule iPod is different from the other iPods not just in terms of size and price but in the fact that it has no display. The idea is that you listen to music on the go and it shuffles through the songs. There’s even an handy feature in iTunes that will always put a different combination of songs on it when you sync. Price: AED329. Apple TV Although it’s not an iPod we present it here as it seems Apple feels the Apple TV is in the same family. With 40GB or 160GB storage capacity, the Apple TV can take all your music, podcasts, and movies. The multimedia can be synchronized from one iTunes library on a Mac or PC, or streamed from up to five other computers. It’s the easiest way to get your multimedia content onto a TV. 50 Reasons to Switch from Microsoft Windows to Apple’s Mac OS X by Chris Pirillo I love my Xbox 360s, I think Popfly rocks (Silverlight will bring much needed competition to Flash). Plus, I can’t live without Exchange and its server-side rules. I love my Microsoft mouse more than any other mouse in the world. Surface looks totally awesome, too.

Microsoft does some amazing things very amazing things. My choice, however, for a primary desktop operating system is no longer Windows - it’s Mac OS X. While I don’t need to justify my actions to anybody, I feel I have 50 strong reasons to finally make the move.

5. VMware Fusion makes it possible to have every operating system at my fingertips (as well as every app that runs on ‘em, FTW). Performance and stability is a reality, not a dream. More importantly, with USB 2.0 support in VMware Fusion, I have near complete compatibility with any external hardware. Parallels is also there, which should keep competition lively.

Anybody in my chat room who watches the live video feed with any regularity knows that I’m a platform neutral geek. Keep that in mind as you read the following list: 1. Seems that the future of Windows development is happening largely for corporate environments and customers. I don’t take issue with this, other than being someone who doesn’t live or work inside a corporate environment at home. 2. Excellent power management in OS X. When I close the lid to my MacBook Pro, it falls asleep. When I open the lid to my MacBook Pro, it wakes up. Imagine that! Seems to be the case 99% of the time, and it happens quickly. 3. I’m ready to experience different frustrations. OS X isn’t perfect, certainly - but I already see its noticeably more stable than Windows Vista has been. Kernel Panics at least look prettier than BSODs. :) Seriously, I just find OS X’s update schedule to be more to my liking - instead of waiting for gigantic service packs, I get minor point releases along the way to major revisions to the OS. Bugs are going to happen, but knowing that showstopping / security bugs are likely to be squished quicker gives me amazing peace of mind. 4. There’s more interesting, useful, beauti-

People have been dual booting for years - now I can triple-task cross-platform in seconds flat. 7. It’s not quite perfect, but closer to what perfect should be. I’m not a huge fan of iTunes or every other Apple utility - but at least with Leopard, they’re trying to make them look and work the same way. 8. I love the fact that most programs and their associated libraries are self-contained (apps). There’s no stress in installing / uninstalling most programs, and for true cleanup jobs there’s always AppZapper. 9. I’m not a huge fan of the Dock for task management, but Quicksilver has virtually no Windows equivalent (in terms of elegance and scriptability, although it’s still completely overwhelming to me right now). where OS X is “better,” but I do appreciate the context menu options for each of the Dock’s icons for “Open at Login” management. 10. I’m sure some would argue the opposite, but… they’re also probably the extreme developer “but it works if you just learn how to use it right” types. Feh. 11. The Apple community has been infiltrated by enough people who aren’t smug. You’re not better than me just because you run another OS or support another vendor, nor are you any less of a geek. Not every Windows user is a neanderthal, although some of their dated arguments would make them out to be. I think that most consumers are caught up in the idea that you NEED Windows for everything at home. You don’t. 12. My iPhone is not going away anytime soon. Would I switch for better compatibility with a communications device? Not necessarily, but if the future of OS X is in the present of the iPhone… they’re going to gain consumer market share at blinding speed. The Preview tool ain’t no joke - with annotations, basic image editing, Core Animation zooming and scrolling, GPS Metadata support, batch operations, etc. It’s all at your fingertips. 43. Expose works. ‘Nuff said. The only thing that surpasses OS X’s open window management is Compiz Fusion. None of this Flip3D nonsense. 44. Help. No, seriously - Help is the way Help should have always been all along. I related my “Help” experience a few weeks ago, with the system not just finding what I was looking for help on, but taking me directly to the spot where I needed to be. I’m pretty sure the Help system isn’t 100% accurate, but it hasn’t disappointed me yet.

47. Call me crazy, but I love the fact that in OS X, the keyboard shortcut for opening Preferences is always the same (Command + Comma). Convenient. Dependable. Quick. 48. Device compatibility doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue as it used to be with the Mac. While I couldn’t get my brand new HP LaserJet to work inside of Vista, it works flawlessly inside of OS X 10.4 (despite having to use HP’s scanning software). Still, with any USB hardware hiccups in Leopard, compatibility issues are erased with VMware Fusion until newer software is unleashed. 49. Thanks to another one of our sponsors, GoToMeeting, I’ve had the opportunity to see quite a few of my friends’ desktops. Quite a few have gone to great lengths to make their installation of Windows look and feel like Mac OS X. At that point, what’s the point of sticking with Windows? Just about the only thing Mac users might want from Windows is the Explorer (FTFF) - and even then, there’s ‘Path Finder.’ 50. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Windows users need Apple’s software more than Mac users need Microsoft’s. That’s just a cold, hard fact. And given my severe disappointment with just about everything in Mac Office 2008, I’m even further driven away from Microsoft’s desktop software. Please don’t take this post as an all-out lovefest for Apple. The two can co-exist peacefully if you let them, and if your routine supports it. I wasn’t ready to switch before now for a lot of reasons. This has been a long time coming. It’s fun again.

What’s In Your Bag? by Zaid (EmiratesMac)

I can’t imagine myself carrying a backpack, so I’ve always carried a shoulder bag. Before I went and bought this bag, I used to carry practical, light and slim bags that fitted in my portable Macintosh, book, papers and a few other items. It’s my first time to carry a large bag such as this one, and to tell the truth I do feel unique. No security man stops me now when I go to my clients’ workplaces while carrying this bag on my shoulder. I conduct training in various facilities, where in some areas I have a permanent desk and in others I deliver training for a full day or over several occasions. So I do want to be prepared with all my essential equipment that can fit in one bag which I always carry with me. In this bag I have: a MacBook Pro 15”, a charger, a wireless Mighty Mouse, a DVI video adaptor, an Apple Remote control , x2 USB flash memory disks, Paper folders, Pen and white board markers, and a book (sometimes). I really liked this bag from the first moment I saw on the net, but it had to be ordered from the US since MEDIUM and Adobe produced this messenger bag in limited numbers. The MEDIUM design group (Santa Barbara, California) have used Adobe Creative Suite 2 to design this bag in collaboration with Adobe, to bring a bag that creative professionals would carry.

Although this bag is made of very fine, heavy duty materials it is seems strange that to access the inside of this bag I have to open it like a sack with a long neck. This neck must be folded and strapped in order to secure contents firmly, which is good but I just can’t get accustomed to this sack concept at all. The extra wide shoulder strap is very comfortable and doesn’t slip down my shoulder. Since the bag is made of leather, it comes with a roll-top rain/elements protector cover made of parachute material with an Adobe logo printed on it. If anyone wants to buy this bag you will have to check eBay, as it’s not sold new anymore. The price, I believe, is still around $250.

They designed it with Macintosh computers in mind, I believe, so it suits my requirements and tastes from all angles. This bag can carry a Mac as big as a 17” PowerBook/ MacBook Pro, and it has some unique features that I use a lot - such as specially designed pockets to hold cables, and files, button holes to extend an earphone cable from the bag to the outside and to run it through clips on the shoulder strap trim area. I wouldn’t particularly choose to place my iPhone/iPod inside the bag, but this feature may be worth using in the rain.

When Apple launched the iPhone in the US, many wanted them to launch essentially an iPhone without the phone part so we could buy and use it here in the Middle East. And eventually Apple did and it was the iPod touch. It’s now been out for a while, and Apple has even updated the software and added a 32GB model to the line up. In fact, the model we reviewed courtesy of iStyle (the 8GB model) is now discontinued. So think of the iPod touch as an iPhone without the phone, camera, or Bluetooth. It does have Wi-Fi, but I think Apple should have left Bluetooth in. It’s a bit thinner than the iPhone and also feels a bit quicker to operate. New applications launch a bit faster and new pages come up quicker, which is really nice. It is truly an iPod first and foremost, with a focus on playing music and video. With the larger screen, it’s a great device for watching video on a bus, flight, etc. Recently Apple announced a software upgrade for the touch, which includes the same Mail application that already exists on the iPhone, Google Maps, Weather application, Stock application, and Notes. This brings the touch closer to being a good alternative for people looking for a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). In fact, I think the iPod touch is the closest that Apple has come to creating a PDA since the ill-fated Newton Messagepad of the 1990s. One complication for us in the Middle East is that the software upgrade cost $19.99, and you can only buy it through an iTunes Store. Since we don’t have an iTunes Store here, you will have to find a way around - for example from http://ituneshop.net.

I used DecoType Arabic typesetting features in Adobe PageMaker back in the late 90s and I’ve been wondering why Winsoft isn’t continuing this trend with the PageMaker successor Adobe InDesign. Now they are but we have to pay for it. Those of us who have seen old Naskh calligraphic scripts in museums around the Islamic world can now reproduce these scripts to a great extent on their computers. The complexity of traditional Arabic calligraphy is digitally transformed into a smart font, loaded with stylistic letters and controlled by simple Tasmeem palettes within InDesign; and better yet the fonts adhere to the true rules of Arabic calligraphy. In Tasmeem you basically type your text using one of two fonts that come with Tasmeem: Naskh and Amiri fonts. Then you use built-in menus and commands to select the enormous variability of alternative Arabic letters that Tasmeem provides. The result is jaw-dropping cascading letters within a word, and forward or backward extended letters at the end of a word, just like a calligrapher would draw by hand when writing Qur’anic verses or poetry. Tasmeem plug-ins for InDesign ME come in three editions: The Tasmeem limited edition comes free with every retail InDesign ME package. Users could use it simply to open documents created with other Tasmeem products, and also to utilize Tasmeem fonts and Aridi art samples. The real features comes in the Tasmeem Creative and Tasmeem Publisher editions. The only difference between these two is the number of pages; the Creative edition is made to work with two pages maximum, while the Publisher edition can handle full publications such as books, newspapers and magazines. The Tasmeem Publishing edition is a big investment that only large newspapers, publishers and large design studios can afford – while the Creative edition remains affordable to all users. I shall continue to use the Tasmeem Publisher edition, and write an extensive review in the Arabic section of upcoming Shuffle issues.

These stylish eyeglasses are full of surprises. You will appear like someone out of StarTrek or Xmen action movies when you wear them. You will still notice how people around you and their look of amazement when they see you wear them. The Myvu device can be plugged into any portable video player, such as an iPod. It is charged via USB cable, and two hours charging will give four hours of playing time. That’s certainly not great, but according to the manufacturer a more recent model will have much better capacity. The small screen inside Myvu is bright and sharp and the attached ear buds are very comfortable. They are attached to the device, so you will feel comfortable wherever you move your head; and the noise reducing pads are especially good. While viewing a movie, music clip, or a video podcast you can still look at your surroundings through the device screen itself, or over and under Myvu’s slim structure which, I believe, is very important. I have tried Myvu with my iPhone via (iPod video) cable and it worked like a charm, but the iPhone switched to airplane mode while viewing my video podcasts. Now why would anyone choose to use Myvu glasses over the large screen of iPhone or iPod Classic? Privacy would be one definite answer. In one of my visits to iStyle at Ibn Battuta, Dubai, I saw one buyer paying for a couple of Myvu boxes at the cashier, I asked him where he intended to use them, and he said he is a dentist and he is replacing the roof-mounted TV screen with Myvus for his patients. With the Myvu, a patient can pick a movie from a supplied iPod, and control sound volume without annoying the dentist during the treatment session. That sounds like one excellent use of Myvu to me.

Using SmartArt Graphics in PowerPoint 2008 Microsoft has done a great job with Office 2008. Many of us complained about Office 2004: that it was not Universal Binary, that iWork produced so much better-looking results, and much more. Yet now, especially with what they call SmartArt Graphics, Microsoft has stepped up their game and now PowerPoint presentations can be made to look so much better than before. This tutorial shows you one quick thing you can do in Microsoft Office 2008, and we hope to bring you more in future issues of Shuffle.

Q: How can I use dual monitors with my Mac and why would I want to? A friend of mine has two monitors with his PC, so I thought I might want that too. A: You don’t say which Mac you have, so I can’t say for sure whether you can use two monitors - but if you have a Mac notebook, an iMac, or a Mac Pro you definitely can. As far as I know, you can’t use two monitors with a Mac mini. The reason why you’d want to use two monitors is to be able to keep more windows open on the screens. That way you could have your Photoshop windows on one screen and your Safari windows on another. You can accomplish a similar thing with Spaces in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, but sometimes it’s just better to be able to see more at the same time. Q: Hey there Magnus, I see you (or Crystal) have created a site. I don’t remember, but at the bottom of the site it said “Created on a Mac” or something like that, which leads me to this question: My friend wants to create a website where she can sell things she makes and stuff. What do you think she should do? Sign up for a .Mac account and use iWeb or something, or go to Etisalat and have them provide her with the tools? A: It depends what she wants to do. If she wants a shopping cart on her site and for people to be able to pay her with credit

cards, then she’d have to build her site in something other than iWeb. But if she wants a site that displays her products and services, then iWeb and .Mac is a good choice; and with iWeb 08 she could even use her own domain name with her .Mac site. Q: I want to bring pictures with me on a flash drive and show them in a slideshow, but I don’t want to import the pictures into an iPhoto library. How would I do that? A: You can do this quite easily with Preview, which comes with every Mac. Just select all the pictures and open them in Preview. Then click the Slideshow button and you’re done. You don’t get any transition effects, and other expected slideshow controls are also missing - but it does the basics and it does them well. Q: About a month back I upgraded my operating system from 10.3 to Leopard. The Leopard OS is extremely cool. But somehow I feel that it has slowed down my system speed a lot. Presently I am using a G5 1.8 GHz Power PC with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM. Is this kind of configuration suitable enough to run Leopard? A: According to Apple (http://www.apple. com/macosx/techspecs/), the minimum specifications required to run Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard are an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor, 512MB of memory, DVD drive,

and 9GB of available disk space. This means your Mac should be more than fast enough to handle Leopard. Whether that means it’s going to run fast or not is a different issue altogether. I would suggest you repair permissions on your hard drive and make sure you have plenty of free space on it. Perhaps you can minimize the number of things that start up and run in the background, and you can run fewer applications at the same time. But other than that there’s not much you can do, other than upgrading the machine.

THE CAKE 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, plus more for pans 2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for pans 2 cups packed light-brown sugar 2 large eggs 2 Granny Smith apples (8 ounces each), peeled and coarsely grated (2 cups) 2 Granny Smith apples (8 ounces each), peeled and cut into 1/4-inch dice 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 3/4 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush three 8-inch round cake pans with butter; line bottoms with parchment paper rounds. Brush paper with butter, then dust pans with flour (tapping out excess); set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together butter, sugar, and eggs until well combined; fold in apples. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, and salt; add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix just until combined. Divide among prepared pans, smooth top. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of cakes comes out clean (about 35 to 45 minutes). Cool 20 minutes in pan, then invert onto cooling racks; peel off parchment. Re-invert cakes and let cool completely, top sides up. To ice cake: Place one layer on a

serving plate. Spread a quarter of the buttercream over the layer and top with another, then another quarter of the buttercream. Top with third layer and spread remaining buttercream over the top and sides of the cake. Chill at least 1 hour before slicing with a serrated knife.

THE BUTTERCREAM 2 large egg whites 1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons Put egg whites and sugar into the heatproof bowl of an electric mixer set over a pan of simmering water. Cook, whisking constantly, until sugar has dissolved and mixture is warm to the touch (about 160 degrees). Attach the bowl to the mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Beat on high speed until stiff (but not dry) peaks form. Continue beating until mixture is fluffy and cooled (about 6 minutes). Switch to the paddle attachment. With mixer on medium-low speed, add butter, several tablespoons at a time, mixing well after each addition. (If the frosting appears to separate after all the butter has been added, beat on medium-high speed until smooth again, 3 to 5 minutes more.) Reduce speed to low; mix to eliminate any air bubbles (about 2 minutes). Stir with a rubber spatula until frosting is smooth.

The Ken Burns Effect is a panning and zooming effect that can be done in Flash to create the impression that a camera is moving from left to right and is zooming in, over a still image. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s named after American filmmaker Ken Burns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Ken_Burns) who made it famous in his American Civil War series. He only had old still photographs and drawings to work with so he needed them to come alive. The effect of panning and zooming accomplished just that. Burns was not the first person to do this but he was the one who made it famous hence it was named after him.

To make the panning and zooming effect last longer, simply add frames by first clicking the timeline then hitting F5 on the keyboard repeatedly until you have added all the frames you want. Shuffle in Print: One-Year Anniversary Shuffle started as a dream in 2006 and it’s developed amazingly well over just a year and a half. It just shows you what a bit of love and dedication can accomplish. Here is a brief timeline of Shuffle’s brief life so far: November 2006 The first Shuffle was published. For the first few months it was only published as a PDF, and for all we knew that was all Shuffle was ever going to be. April 2007 After a few months, we faced the first major event that the EmiratesMac Apple User Group had arranged - the Apple TV Event of March 2007. For this event we thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a printed copy of Shuffle that we could hand out to attendees of this event.” In April 2007 our first issue of Shuffle was printed. It was actually published on March 29, 2007 (during the Apple TV Event), but that’s a small technicality. The first print run was 1000 copies. May 2007 In May 2007, we increased printing to 2000 copies. Doubling the circulation so quickly after just starting to print

was amazing. Summer was approaching though, and we had to make sure content was ready for the summer months; since we know many people leave the UAE to escape the heat during the summer months. We did manage to publish all summer of 2007, which was a testament to how dedicated the people working on Shuffle really are. September 2007 The next major milestone was in September 2007 when we published the special GITEX issue. We took a big risk and increased the printing to 5000 copies and started an Arabic section in Shuffle. Counting on Arabic readers sending us articles in Arabic was a gamble (and we still need more Arabic articles for each issue), but immediately after launching the Arabic section we started hearing from users how much they appreciated it. December 2007 As if the increase to 5000 copies and inclusion of Arabic wasn’t enough, we took another major step forward in December when, in cooperation with Arab Computers in Saudi Arabia, we almost doubled the circulation to 9000 copies of which 5000 were to go to the Kingdom. This was

obviously a major development, and one that we’re still fully assessing the impact of - but clearly we’re excited about bringing Shuffle to more readers. April 2008 and the future Now we’re at the one-year anniversary of Shuffle being printed, and as I wrote back in November 2007, for the one-year anniversary of Shuffle’s inception, it’s been a rough ride with a few bumps along the way. However, Shuffle is doing very well. We’re seeing new writers attach themselves to Shuffle and write great content. We’re seeing more and more people around the region actually starting to look for and ask about Shuffle each month. And we’re seeing growing interest from countries to which Shuffle has not yet been distributed on a regular basis, including Kuwait and Jordan. We will do our very best to keep bringing you Shuffle each month. But you can also try to help us by forwarding to us any potential advertising leads, by writing articles, and most of all by regularly reading Shuffle and giving us your feedback. This is a true community effort, and I think Apple-fans across the Middle East should be proud of what they’ve accomplished.

‫في الحرم المدرسي والجامعي‬

‫لدينا العديد من الطلبة اعضاء في مجموعة مستخدمي أپل ‪ -‬ماك االمارات‪ ،‬ونحن نسندهم‬ ‫بكل ما أوتينا من امكانات وبأشكال متعددة‪ .‬ملاك االمارات نشاطات تعليمية حالي ًا ولكننا‬ ‫نود ان نتواصل بشكل اوسع مع اكثر عدد من الطلبة‪ ،‬لذا بادرنا بتكوين مايسمى ماك‬ ‫االمارات في احلرم املدرسي واجلامعي‪.‬‬

‫كان لي حديث موخر ًا مع زمالئي الطلبة حول دوري‬ ‫في اصدار نشرة شفل بشكل دوري وبدون مقابل‪.‬‬ ‫ومبا أنهم لم يتفهموا ِل َم ي ّود احدهم ان يعمل مايعمل‬ ‫دون مقابل مادي‪ ،‬فقد حاولت افهامهم بأن ليس‬ ‫كل الناس ماديني ويفعلون اي شيء مقابل النقود‪.‬‬ ‫فاملردود الذي ابحث عنه هو ان اجنز االمر ليس‬ ‫إال‪ ،‬وكذلك عندما اسمع اناس ًا يقولون بأنهم قد قرأوا‬ ‫أمر ما او انهم استمتعوا‬ ‫شفل وخدمتهم النشرة في ٍ‬ ‫بقراءتها وهذا مايشعرني بالغبطة‪.‬‬

‫إن إصدار ونشر شيء مثل شفل كان جزء من حلمي‬ ‫منذ زمن طويل واعتقد بأني قد ذكرت هذا مسبق ًا‪،‬‬ ‫وقد حتقق لي هذا احللم منذ سنة وهذا افضل مايقال‬ ‫عن حتقُق احالم الناس‪ ،‬ولهذا فأنا ممنت جد ًا‪ .‬بالطبع‬ ‫هذا االجناز لم يكن ممكنا لوال وجود طابور طويل من‬ ‫االشخاص‪ ،‬شكر ًا جزي ًال لكم‪ .‬نزداد حماس ًا حينما‬ ‫ننظر جتاه املستقبل ونرى وفرة املتغيرات التي نحن‬ ‫بصددها‪ ،‬ونحن بأيدينا ان نصنع من الفُرص املقبلة‬ ‫مواضيع شيقة لشفل‪ ،‬فدعونا النركن الى اجنازاتنا‬ ‫فأمامنا سنة حافلة مبنجزات وفعال ّيات ابل ون ّود ان‬ ‫نقدم لكم شفل مبضمون افضل‪.‬‬ ‫نقدم لكم موضوع جديد في هذا العدد ونتمنى تكراره‬ ‫في كل عدد‪ .‬املوضوع عبارة عن صفحة تبرز آخر‬ ‫أخبار أبل ُيقدمها لكم جيمس بادكوك‪ .‬كما يقدم ْبرا َين‬ ‫سلسلة مقاالت عن التحول للماكنتوش كما َعمل زيد‬ ‫بج ّد لتوفير مقاالت عربية مميزة‪ .‬نتمنى ان تستمتعوا‬ ‫بهذا العدد وأعداد شفل املستقبلية وندعوا لنا بسنوات‬ ‫مديدة واعدة وناجحة‪.‬‬ ‫اعدنا اخراج الغالف الذي ظهرت به شفل قبل سنة‪،‬‬ ‫ولكن بنسخة مغايرة‪ .‬فقد كانت الفكرة قبل عام‬ ‫هي وضع احد اعضاء ماك االمارات على الغالف‬ ‫وطبعا اخترنا لذلك الغالف شخصية ‪Appleholic‬‬ ‫وهو يقف للكاميرا وبخلفية خضراء فاقعة‪ .‬بينما بقي‬ ‫‪ Appleholic‬على الغالف إال أننا غ ّيرنا لون اخللفية‪.‬‬ ‫اعتقد بأن الغالف جذاب أال تعتقدون‪ .‬عندما انظر‬ ‫الى اغلفة االعداد السابقة فسنجد بعضها ناجحا فني ًا‬ ‫وموفق ًا وبعضها عكس ذلك‪ .‬فالغالف كان دوما آخر‬ ‫مانقوم به عند إعداد شفل في كل شهر وهو يتطلب‬ ‫تفكير ًا عميق ًا الختياره‪.‬‬ ‫نأمل بأن نعرض لكم في اعداد شفل خالل السنة‬ ‫املقبلة تصميمات وصور ًا من‬ ‫قراءنا لذا فإننا نود ان نسمع‬ ‫منكم إن كانت لديكم أية‬ ‫افكار بهذا اخلصوص‪.‬‬ ‫‪4‬‬

‫منتقل للماكنتوش‬ ‫براين نيلسن (ماك االمارات)‬ ‫َ‬ ‫لي االن شهر منذ ان حتولت للماك او‬ ‫َ‬ ‫اس اكس‪ ،‬وماذا اقول… حسن ًا‪،‬‬ ‫هنالك الكثير من االمور التي‬ ‫على متحول من ويندوز للماك‬ ‫ان يستوعبها‪ .‬سأركز في‬ ‫هذا املقال على بعض اهم‬ ‫الفروقات واملباديء التي‬ ‫على املنتقل ان يتعود‬ ‫عليها‪ ،‬ولكني سأختصر‬ ‫مناقشتي بشكل اساسي‬ ‫على برنامجني مبنيني‬ ‫داخل نظام او اس اكس‬ ‫وهما الفايندر ‪Finder‬‬ ‫(الباحث) وسبوت اليت‬ ‫‪.Spotlight‬‬

‫إن من االهمية ان يعلم القارئ بأن املقارنات التي‬ ‫سأسوقها في هذا املوضوع هي بني نظامي ماك او‬ ‫اس اكس وويندوز اكس بي‪.‬‬ ‫إن من أوضح املفارقات التي وجدتها كمنتقل من ماك‬ ‫لبي سي‪ ،‬هي القوائم العائمة التي كانت تظهر في‬ ‫نظام ويندوز عندما تضغط زر املاوس اليمني‪ ،‬بينما‬ ‫تظهر على املاكنتوش عندما تبقي اصبعك ضاغطا على‬ ‫زر التحكم ‪ Ctrl‬ومن ثم تضغط زر املاوس‪ .‬وتبني لي‬ ‫فيما بعد بأن ملاوس ابل امكانية اظهار القائمة العائمة‬ ‫بعدما تفعل هذه اخلاصية من لوحة خصائص النظام‬ ‫‪ System Preferences‬في خانة الفأرة ولوحة املفاتيح‬ ‫‪ Mouse and Keyboard‬وتفعل الزر اليمني على انه‬ ‫زر ثانوي ‪ ،Secondary button‬طبعا باالمكان عكس‬ ‫مواقع الزر الرئيسي والثانوي بحسب الرغبة خاصة‬ ‫ملن هو أعسر‪.‬‬ ‫على املنتقل ان يتعود على أمر آخر وهو ان زر التحكم‬ ‫‪ Ctrl‬ال ُيستخدم في امتام اختصارات االوامر مثل‬ ‫النسخ واللصق‪ ،‬حيث عليك استبدال هذا الزر بزر‬ ‫االوامر ‪ . Command‬وحيث ان هذا التغيير يثير‬ ‫النرفزة إال ان سرعان ماستقتنع بسهولة مترير ابهامك‬ ‫اليسار او اليمني خارج زر الفراغ قلي ًال المتام عملية‬ ‫النسخ او اللصق‪.‬‬ ‫‪8‬‬

‫من أهم اجلوانب التي على املنتقل احلديث االنتباه‬ ‫لها وتعلمها هي كيفية استخدام الفايندر (الباحث)‬ ‫وبالرغم من ان االسم يوحي بأن هذا تطبيق معني‬ ‫بالبحث عن اشياء‪ ،‬إال أنه اكثر من ذلك‪ .‬فاحدى اهم‬ ‫خصائص الفايندر هو استعراض املستندات وامللفات‬ ‫واظهارها بطرق مختلفة (كأن يظهرها بشكل ايقونات‪،‬‬ ‫او قائمة او اعمدة او على هيئة صف من االغلفة) كما‬ ‫يتيح الفايندر بتصنيف مجموعات البحث بحسب‬ ‫اجناسها كأن يكون التصنيف بحسب نوع امللف‬ ‫او نوع املعلومة او االسم او النمط‪ .‬وتعرض شاشة‬ ‫الفانيدر التقليدية عمود ًا لطرق مختصرة للقفز مباشرة‬ ‫الى ملفات املستخدم‪.‬‬ ‫ومن اجمل مزايا الفايندر هي إظهار حملة صورية عن‬ ‫محتويات املستند وتسمى حملة سريعة ‪Quick Look‬‬ ‫حيث باالمكان تفعيلها في الفايندر من قائمة‬ ‫‪ File < Quick Look‬وهذه اخلاصية تتيح للمتسخدم‬ ‫اختالس النظر الى محتوى املستند دون فتحه‪.‬‬ ‫وهناك ميزة اخرى لطيفة للفايندر وهي الفتح التتابعي‬ ‫للمجلدات‪/‬امللفات‪ ،‬وهي إذا كنت ممسك ًا مبستند او‬ ‫وتود وضعها في ملف فما عليك‬ ‫صورة بزر املاوس َ‬ ‫سوى إبقاء زر املاوس مضغوط ًا وسترى امللف ينفتح‬ ‫تلقائي ًا وهكذا لبقية امللفات في داخل امللف االول حتى‬ ‫تصل الى امللف املبتغى لوضع مستندك او صورتك‬ ‫فيه‪.‬‬ ‫في احلقيقة لقد تفاجأت في باديء االمر حيث ان‬ ‫الويندوز ُيظهر امناط املستندات‪ ،‬بينما في املاكنتوش‬ ‫هذه املسألة ليست بذات اهمية‪ ،‬ولكن ان احببت‬ ‫رؤية منط املستند فعليك تفعيلها من < ‪Finder‬‬ ‫‪ Preferences < Advanced‬ثم ضع عالمة صح على‬ ‫خانة ‪ .Show all file extensions‬هناك أمر يضايقني‬ ‫كمنتقل حديث للماكنتوش‪ ،‬حيث انني متعود بأن اغلق‬ ‫النوافد املفتوحة من اعلى ميني الشاشة‪ ،‬فإذا بي‬ ‫دوما اضغط على الزر الشفاف في نافذة الفانيدر فإذا‬ ‫بشريط االختصارات في اعلى النافدة تختفي‪ ،‬ويتعني‬ ‫علي الضغط على نفس الزر في اعلى ميني النافذة‬ ‫مرة أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫إلظهار الشريط ّ‬ ‫هنالك ميزة أمان سيقدرها أي منتقل حديث‪ ،‬وهي‬ ‫امكانية تفريغ سلة املهمالت بطريقة آمنة متاما جتعل‬ ‫من مهمة استرجاع املواد املمسوحة مهمة مستحيلة‬ ‫حتى لو استخدمت برامج من طرف ثالث‪ .‬تلك امليزة‬ ‫التي اقصدها موجودة في قائمة ‪Finder < Secure‬‬ ‫‪.Empty Trash‬‬ ‫إحدى احلاالت التي تسبب احليرة للمنتقل احلديث‪،‬‬

‫هي تسمية ‪ Alias‬وهي مااعتدنا على تسميته‬ ‫‪ Shortcut‬في الويندوز‪ ،‬وهي نفس النتيجة بكال‬ ‫احلالتني وهي انشاء نسخة ملستند او ملف تربطه‬ ‫باملستند احلقيقي رابط غير مرئي‪ ،‬لكن علي أن ُاضيف‬ ‫بأن طريقة عمل الرابط هذا في املاكنتوش او اقوى‬ ‫مما عليه في الويندوز‪ .‬السبب يعود الى كون املستند‬ ‫الرابط في الويندوز يربط االسم واملسار اخلاص به‪،‬‬ ‫فإذا حركت املستند او امللف من موقعه فيتعني على‬ ‫النظام حتديث الرابط وهذا يسبب تأخير‪ .‬بينما في‬ ‫نظام املاك يقوم النظام بترقيم املستندات بأرقام فريدة‬ ‫وغير مرئية مما مينع انقطاع الروابط في املستقبل‬ ‫حركنا املستند من موقعه او حتى لو اعطيناه‬ ‫حتى لو ّ‬ ‫اسم ًا جديد ًا‪.‬‬ ‫نأتي الى خاصية البحث ‪ Spotlight‬والتي اتوقع من‬ ‫أي منتقل حديث ان يقدرها عالي ًا‪ .‬فخاصية البحث‬ ‫هذه تبحث في خصائص ومكونات املستدنات‬ ‫وامللفات‪ ،‬فحتى لو كنت تبحث عن كلمة في مقال‬ ‫داخل مستند على النظام‪ ،‬فهذه اخلاصية ستجدها لك‪.‬‬ ‫واحدى مزايا ‪ Spotlight‬هي تواجدها في اي مكان‬ ‫ووقت والداعي للترك البرنامج او النافذة املفتوحة لبدء‬ ‫عملية البحث‪ ،‬فقط عليك بالكبس على عالمة العدسة‬ ‫املكبرة في اعلى ميني الشاشة‪.‬‬ ‫لقد امتعتني خواص ‪ Spotlight‬لدرجة انني استعمله‬ ‫احيانا لرؤية مرادفات او شبيه الكلمات التي انا‬ ‫ابحث عنها في النظام او في ويكيبيديا او حتى امتام‬ ‫عملية حسابية‪ .‬ليس هذا فحسب بل أن ‪ Spotlight‬قد‬ ‫يترجم مايريده املنتقل احلديث‪ .‬مثالً‪ ،‬نظام املاكنتوش‬ ‫يسمي صورة سطح املكتب «اخللفية» ‪Background‬‬ ‫بينما في الويندوز تسمى «ورق احلائط» ‪،Wallpaper‬‬ ‫فإذا بحثت في ‪ Spotlight‬عن ورق احلائط‪ ،‬سيظهر‬ ‫لك لوحة التحكم لتغيير اخللفية في نتيجة البحث‪.‬‬ ‫والأنسى ان اذكر ميزة غاية في الروعة في ‪Spotlight‬‬ ‫وهي امكانية اظهار نتيجة البحث على شكل نافذة‬ ‫تقسم نتيجة البحث الى اصناف وذلك باختيار‬ ‫‪ Show All‬من قائمة نتائج البحث في ‪Spotlight‬‬ ‫ومن ثم بإمكان املستخدم تقليص نتائج البحث‬ ‫الى اضيق نطاق ممكن في النافذة هذه من خالل‬ ‫اسم املستند مث ًال او بالضغط على عالمة الزائد ‪+‬‬ ‫إلضافة عوامل اخرى في عملية البحث لتقليص نطاق‬ ‫البحث اكثر وبالتالي امكانية حصر النتائج بشكل‬ ‫ادق‪ .‬وكمثال على ذلك ابحث عن صنف مثل ‪PDF‬‬ ‫وفي نفس الوقت ابحث عن اسم ‪ Shuffle‬فستكون‬ ‫نتائج البحث محصورة ودقيقة اكثر‪ .‬وهذا يدعونا‬ ‫للمقارنة مع خاصية البحث في الويندوز‪ ،‬إذ هي تفي‬ ‫بالغرض ألمور البحث البسيط ولكنها تفشل في‬ ‫البحث املتشعب كما انها بطيئة جد ًا إذا ماقارناها مع‬ ‫‪.Spotlight‬‬ ‫باستطاعتي اضافة املزيد من املزايا الرائعة فيما‬ ‫يخص الفايندر والبحث‪ ،‬وكالهما سيثيرون السرور‬ ‫للمنتقل احلديث دون شك‪ .‬في العدد املقبل سأضع‬ ‫بني ايديكم نتائج جتاربي مع الدوك ‪ Dock‬وخاصية‬ ‫تبادل امللفات‪ ،‬وبرامج آياليف‪.‬‬ ‫مازال لدي الكثير لتعلمه في هذا الوقت القصير‪.‬‬

‫نظام ماكنتوش او اس اكس من ابل‬ ‫كرس بيريللو‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫علي أن أعترف بأني أعشق كل ماتقدمه مايكروسوفت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من جهاز اإلكس‪-‬بوكس ‪ Xbox 360s‬وخدمة بوبفالي‬ ‫‪ Popfly‬الرائعة (كون سيلفر‪-‬اليت ‪Silverlight‬‬ ‫سيشكل منافسة حقيقية لبرنامج فالش ‪ ،)Flash‬وال‬ ‫أتصور العيش بدون خدمة إكستشينج ‪Exchange‬‬ ‫وميزات مخدمها ‪ Server‬اإلضافية‪ .‬كما أعشق‬ ‫املاوس من مايكروسوف أكثر من أي ماوس آخر في‬ ‫العالم‪ .‬إضافة إلى أن جهاز سيرفيس ‪ Surface‬من‬ ‫مايكروسوفت مذهل أيض ًا‪ .‬إن مايكروسوفت تأتي‬ ‫إلينا مبنتجات رائعة بالفعل‪ ،‬بل رائعة جد ًا‪ .‬لكن عندما‬ ‫يتعلق األمر باختيار حاسوب محمول لالستخدام‬ ‫الشخصي فإن خياري اليوم لم يعد ‪ Windows‬بل‬ ‫‪ !!Mac OS X‬من الصعب االعتراف رسمي ًا بهذا‬ ‫األمر‪ ....‬كون منتجات مايكروسوفت مذهلة‪ .‬وقد‬ ‫ساندتني مايكروسوفت في أعمالي على مر السنني‪،‬‬ ‫لكن املشكلة لو أنهم يق ّدرون قيمتنا كمستخدمني‬ ‫ملنتجاتهم‪ .‬وعلى الرغم من أني لست مضطر ًا للتبرير‬ ‫ألحد‪ ،‬لكن في داخلي ‪ ٥٠‬سبب ًا جتعلني أتخذ قرار‬ ‫نشرت على اإلنترنت أسماء‬ ‫التغيير‪ .‬وذلك بعد أن‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫برامجي املفضلة على ماك وألهمت صديقي براين‬ ‫لكتابة برنامج أبستر ‪( Appster‬حيث يساعدك في‬ ‫نشر أسماء برامج ماك املفضلة لديك على مدونتك بكل‬ ‫سهولة)‪ .‬وإن أي أحد يتابع البث املباشر على مدونتي‬ ‫بشكل مستمر أو متقطع سيعلم أني شخص حيادي‬ ‫غريب األطوار‪ .‬إبقِ ذلك في ذهنك وأنت تقرأ هذه‬ ‫القائمة‪:‬‬ ‫‪ -١‬يبدو أن التطوير املستقبلي على ويندوز سيكون‬ ‫بشكل أساسي لصالح الشركات وعمالئهم‪ ،‬لكني ال‬ ‫أرى أهمية في ذلك بالنسبة لشخص مثلي ال يهمه بيئة‬ ‫الشركة داخل املنزل‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢‬إن إدارة الطاقة في ‪ OS X‬ممتازة وذكية‪ ،‬فعندما‬ ‫أغلق شاشة حاسوبي ‪ MacBook Pro‬يذهب إلى‬ ‫النوم‪ ،‬وعندما أفتحه يستيقظ‪ .‬تخيل ذلك! وحسب‬ ‫جتربتي فإن ‪ ٪٩٩‬من حاالت النوم واالستيقاظ بعد‬ ‫كل إغالق وفتح جتري بشكل سريع‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٣‬أنا مستعد ألعايش اإلحباطات‪ OS X .‬ليس‬ ‫بالنظام الكامل بالطبع‪ ،‬ولكن الحظت فرق ًا كبير ًا في‬ ‫استقرار النظام مقارنة مع ويندوز فيستا ‪.Vista‬‬ ‫فعلى األقل شكل شاشة جت ّمد النظام املسماة "كيرنل‬ ‫بانيكس" ‪ Kernel Panics‬في ماك هي أجمل من‬ ‫"شاشة املوت الزرقاء" ‪ BSOD‬في ويندوز ( ‪ :‬زد‬

‫على ذلك‪ ،‬أني أجد حتديثات النظام في ‪ OS X‬محببة‬ ‫إلي أكثر من مثيالتها "العمالقة" ‪Service Packs‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫اخلاصة بويندوز‪ ،‬حيث أحصل من آبل على إصدارات‬ ‫(حتديثات) صغيرة نسبي ًا لكن التحديث فيها يكون‬ ‫جذري ًا على النظام‪ .‬وطبع ًا ستظهر لك مشاكل النظام‬ ‫‪ Bugs‬من وقت إلى آخر لكن العبرة هي في سحق تلك‬ ‫املشاكل وإصالحها بأسرع ما ميكن في التحديثات‬ ‫التالية‪ ،‬األمر الذي يجعلني أعمل براحة بال‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٤‬هناك برامج مفيدة وجميلة ومثيرة لالهتمام‬ ‫وسعرها مقبول لنظام املاكنتوش‪ .‬إن كنت تظن أنه‬ ‫اليتوفر برامج لـ ‪ OS X‬فاسمح لي أن أقول لك أنك‬ ‫أحد أولئك املغفلني الذين لم يحاولوا إجراء بحث على‬ ‫اإلنترنت على اإلطالق‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٥‬بفضل ‪ VMware Fusion‬أصبحت مختلف أنظمة‬ ‫يدي (مبا فيها جميع البرامج التي‬ ‫التشغيل مبتناول ّ‬ ‫تعمل عليها‪ ،‬شيء رائع!)‪ .‬فاألداء واالستقرار في‬ ‫النظام حقيقة واقعة وليست حلم ًا‪ .‬وأهم من ذلك دعم‬ ‫كامل لـ ‪ ،USB 2.0‬أستطيع من خالله ربط أي جهاز‬ ‫خارجي بكل توافقية‪ .‬وبالطبع يتوفر أيض ًا برنامج‬ ‫باراللز ‪ Parallels‬حيث ُيبقي وجوده في الساحة على‬ ‫روح التنافس‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٦‬أعتقد بأننا سنختبر مستقبل الويندوز (او اي‬ ‫برنامج) سيكون من خالل البيئات االفتراضية‬ ‫‪ .Virtual Machine‬إذ أن امكانية اإلقالع املتعدد‬ ‫‪ Dual Booting‬متوفرة منذ سنوات‪ ،‬واليوم أصبح‬ ‫بإمكاني تنفيذ ثالثة عمليات مختلفة في كل بيئة في‬ ‫نفس الوقت على جهاز واحد وبثواني‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٧‬الشك أن مايكروسوفت ولينكس قد مضيا في‬ ‫طى حثيثة وكبرى في تطوير انظمتهما في السنوات‬ ‫خُ ً‬ ‫االخيرة‪ ...‬لكني أشعر وكمستخدم لنظام ليبارد‬ ‫‪ Leopard‬بأن َمن طوره هو فريق واحد‪ .‬وبالرغم من‬ ‫انها ليست تامة‪،‬إال أنها األقرب إلى الكمال‪ .‬وعلى‬ ‫لست من محبي آي‪-‬تيونز ‪ iTunes‬وكل‬ ‫الرغم من أني ُ‬ ‫برامج آبل اخلدمية لكن فريق تطوير ليبارد على األقل‬ ‫قد سعى إلى جعل كل تلك البرامج متشابهة في الشكل‬ ‫وطريقة العمل إلى حد كبير‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٨‬ما أجمل حقيقة أن معظم البرامج ومكتباتها‬ ‫امللحقة جتتمع في ح ّيز واحد‪ .‬وبالتالي ليس هناك‬ ‫صعوبات في تنصيب أو مسح أغلب تلك البرامج‬ ‫حيث تتوفر برامج مثل ‪ AppZapper‬املخصصة لتلك‬ ‫املهمة‪.‬‬

‫لست من عشاق الدوك ‪ Dock‬إلدارة املهام‪ ،‬لكن‬ ‫‪ُ -٩‬‬ ‫بوجود برنامج كويك‪-‬سيلفر ‪ Quicksilver‬تخلصت‬ ‫من الدوك‪ ،‬وللعلم فبرنامج كويك سلفز ليس له شبيه‬ ‫في بيئة ويندوز من ناحية اجلمالية وجودة البرمجة‪،‬‬ ‫أنا في طور تعلم كويك سلفر‪ ،‬فالبرنامج مازال أكبر‬ ‫من مستواي حالي ًا‪ ..‬أما الدوك في ‪ OS X‬فإنه ليس‬ ‫األفضل ما في هذا النظام إال أن فيه ميزة ج ّد مهمة‬ ‫وهي إمكانية جعل اي برنامج في الدوك ينطلق للعمل‬ ‫مبجرد تشغيل النظام‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -١٠‬إن املقارنة بني البحث من خالل سبوت‪-‬اليت‬ ‫‪ Spotlight‬وويندوز دسكتوب سيرش ‪Windows‬‬ ‫‪ Desktop Search‬هي كمقارنة سيارة بي إم دبليو‬ ‫زد فور ‪ BMW Z4‬بسيارة فورد بينتو ‪Ford Pinto‬‬ ‫(من ناحية قوة األداء والسهولة وواجهة املستخدم)‪.‬‬ ‫املنافسة هنا غير واردة‪ .‬وقد يختلف معي في ذلك‬ ‫كثيرون‪ ...‬ويا للسخرية فأغلب أولئك هم من مبرمجي‬ ‫علي أحدهم‪“ :‬لكنها ستعمل إن‬ ‫ويندوز حيث قد ير ّد ّ‬ ‫تعلمت كيفية استخدامها‪ ،‬أليس كذلك؟"‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -١١‬يغزو مجتمع آبل أناس كثيرون كانوا في السابق‬ ‫كنت‬ ‫في املكان اخلطأ‪.‬‬ ‫ولست بأفضل مني إن َ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫مورد ًا معين ًا‬ ‫تستخدم نظام تشغيل مختلف أو تدعم ِّ‬ ‫أوكنت غريب األطوار أكثر منّي‪ .‬عالوة علىذلك‪ ،‬ليس‬ ‫كل مستخدم لويندوز هو مستخدم بدائي مع أن جدل‬ ‫بعضهم أحيان ًا قد يعكس أفكار ًا قدمية عفى عليها‬ ‫الزمن‪ .‬وأعتقد أن أغلب املستخدمني (املستهلكني)‬ ‫مازالوا في فخ فكرة "احلاجة" إلى ويندوز الحتياجاتهم‬ ‫عار عن الصحة‪.‬‬ ‫احلوسبية املنزلية‪ ،‬وذلك ٍ‬

‫‪ -١٢‬لن يرحل هاتفي اآلي‪-‬فون ‪ iPhone‬عنّي في‬ ‫علي التحول إلى‬ ‫املستقبل القريب‪ .‬لذا هل يتوجب ّ‬ ‫هاتف آخر أكثر توافقية؟ ليس بالضرورة‪ ،‬لكن إن كان‬ ‫مستقبل نظام ‪ OS X‬هو في جهاز آي‪-‬فون احلالي‬ ‫فإن آبل ستكسب نسبة من سوق املستهلكني بسرعة‬ ‫خيالية‪ .‬أذكر أني منذ فترة ليست ببعيدة كنت أكره‬ ‫هذا اجلهاز حيث كنت غارق ًا في الدفاع عن ويندوز‬ ‫النقال ‪.Windows Mobile‬‬ ‫‪ -١٣‬تكاد أخطار االسبايوير ‪ Spyware‬واملالوير‬ ‫‪ Malware‬والفيروسات تكون معدومة هنا‪ .‬هذا‬ ‫اليعني بأنك لست بحاجة الستخدام برامج حماية‪،‬‬ ‫إلي فال أخشَ ى كثير ًا عندما أجرب برامج‬ ‫لكن بالنسبة ّ‬ ‫جديدة على نظام ‪.OS X‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫‪ -١٤‬الكثير من أصدقائي يفكرون جديا بالتغيير‬ ‫كما فعلت أنا‪ .‬وهذا مرتبط بشدة بالنقطة االولى‬ ‫اعاله‪ .‬وببساطة أقول لكم أنه مبجرد أن أتفاخر‬ ‫أمام األصدقاء مبيزات برامجي مثل ‪ CamTwist‬و‬ ‫‪ Colloquy‬وميزة ‪ Live Stream‬فإن هذا قد جعل‬ ‫عدد ًا ال بأس به منهم يشتري جهاز ماك أو إنه يفكر‬ ‫بجدية باتخاذ هذا القرار قريب ًا‪ .‬ومن املثير للدهشة‬ ‫أن البرنامجني املذكورين مجانيان بالكامل ويعمالن‬ ‫بشكل مثالي قد يكون أفضل من برامج مشابهة في‬ ‫ويندوز غير مجانية وغالية نسبي ًا‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -١٥‬لقد تخلى الويندوز عن املستخدمني احملترفني‬ ‫واملبرمجني الذين تسميهم مايكروسوفت مبصطلح‬ ‫"‪ ،"Power Users‬نقطة انتهى‪ .‬أين اإلضافات‬ ‫اخلاصة ‪ addons‬بويندوز ڤيستا ألتيميت ‪Vista‬‬ ‫‪Ulitmate‬؟ أين باور تويز ‪Power Toys‬؟ لم ال يدعم‬ ‫ويندوز ميديا بالير ‪Windows Media Player‬‬ ‫خاصية البودكاست ‪ Podcast‬حتى اليوم‪ ،‬مع أن ميزة‬ ‫‪ RSS‬قد ُأدخلت إلى هذا البرنامج منذ نسخته التاسعة‬ ‫في إصدارته التجريبية وقبل سنوات من بدء احلديث‬ ‫عن إشاعات عن البودكاست‪ .‬ومع ذلك فإني ال أعني‬ ‫أبد ًا أن ويندوز في طريقه إلى املوت‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -١٦‬برنامج بوت‪-‬كامب ‪ BootCamp‬متوفر خلدمتك‬ ‫دوم ًا إذا ما تعذرت البرامج االخرى‪.‬‬ ‫‪١٧‬‏‏‏‏‏‪ -‬إن نظام ليبارد متوافق كلي ًا مع ك ًال من تقنيات‬ ‫‪٣٢‬بت و ‪٦٤‬بت‪ .‬هذه النقطة الرائعة بحد ذاتها كافية‬ ‫لتقتني جهاز ماكنتوش‪ .‬إنا مسألة بسيطة للغاية‪ ،‬إذ َلم‬ ‫علي كمستخدم أن أكون في موقع اتخاذ قرار االختيار‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ما بني االصدارات والبحث عما يتناسب مع اجلهاز‬ ‫علي أن أتعلم ذلك‬ ‫الذي أستخدمه‪ ،‬أو أن يتعني ّ‬ ‫وأفهمه وآخذه بعني االعتبار‪ .‬تذ ّكر أني أحتدث من‬ ‫وجهة نظر مستخدم منزلي ال أكثر‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -١٨‬تامي ماشني ‪ .Time Machine‬واااو‪ .‬هل يعقل‬ ‫ان يكون بهذه البساطة‪ .‬فقط اختر قرصك الالسلكي‬ ‫‪ AirPort Disk‬كقرص احتياطي لكل حاسوب‬ ‫وسيستمتع جميع أفراد العائلة باستخدامه‪ .‬هل‬ ‫تدرك معنى ذلك؟ كال‪ ،‬برنامج ‪Windows Volume‬‬ ‫‪ Shadow Copy‬شيء مختلف متام ًا‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -١٩‬يعمل الباحث ‪ Finder‬في ليبارد على البحث في‬ ‫احلواسيب األخرى على الشبكة بكل سالسة حسب‬ ‫ماتدعي ابل‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى الولوج عن بعد إلى نتائج‬ ‫ذلك البحث (عن طريق حساب دوت ماك ‪.Mac‬‬

‫اخلاضع للرسوم‪ ،‬حيث يستحق الشراء عند احلاجة‬ ‫إليه بالفعل)‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٠‬يعتبر أداء برامج اجلافا ‪ Java‬عند تشغيلها على‬ ‫نظام ‪ OS X‬جيد ًا‪ ،‬وهذه البرامج تعمل بأداء أفضل‬ ‫دائم ًا عندما تكون بعيدة عن بيئة ويندوز‪ .‬وفي احلقيقة‪،‬‬ ‫فإن أغلب برامج الطرف الثالث ‪Third-Party‬‬ ‫مصممة بشكل ممتاز بحيث تندمج بسالسة مع نظام‬ ‫التشغيل بكامله‪ .‬هذا رائع‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢١‬لن حتتاج أبد ًا إلى إعادة جتميع محتويات‬ ‫‪ Defrag‬قرصك الصلب‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٢‬يوجد برنامج إيديوم ‪ Adium‬لنظام ‪ ،OS X‬وهو‬ ‫برنامج املراسلة الفوري ‪ Instant Messaging‬الذي‬ ‫يسمح لك باستخدام أغلب حسابات املراسلة الفورية‬ ‫الشهيرة مثل ‪ AIM‬و ‪ Yahoo‬و ‪Google Talk‬‬ ‫إلي‬ ‫بالنسبة‬ ‫وحسابات أخرى في برنامج واحد‪ .‬وهو‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بديل لبرنامج ميراندا آي إم ‪ .Miranda IM‬كما يتوفر‬ ‫سكايب ‪ Skype‬أيض ًا على ماك‪ .‬وأتوقع شخصي ًا‬ ‫ظهور برامج أخرى متعددة احلسابات على اإلنترنت‬ ‫في األشهر القادمة‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٣‬أثبتت خدمة بوجنور ‪ Bonjour‬جدارتها وفائدتها‬ ‫في الشبكة املنزلية‪ .‬وكل حاسوب يحمل هذه اخلدمة‬ ‫ميكن ش ْب ُك ُه مع حواسيب أخرى تلقائي ًا وبدون أي‬ ‫عناء حتى تلك التي تعمل على ويندوز‪ ،‬حيث يتوافق‬ ‫بوجنور معها بشكل كامل‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٤‬إن ربط نظام ‪ OS X‬بالشبكات الالسلكية أسهل‬ ‫وأكثر تنظيم ًا‪ .‬وحتى أدوات الشبكة الالسلكية ليست‬ ‫بتلك التعقيد‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٥‬ميكن إعداد اخلدمات مثل مشاركة امللفات مع‬ ‫ويندوز أو ‪ FTP‬أو حتى املشاركة عبر اإلنترنت ‪Web‬‬ ‫‪ sharing‬بكل سهولة بنقرات معدودة‪ .‬التقل لي إنه‬ ‫مبقدورك إعداد ‪ FTP‬على ويندوز بتلك السهولة ألنها‬ ‫بالتأكيد ليست كذلك‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٦‬ميكن تشغيل معظم صيغ ملفات الصوت‬ ‫والفيديو إن لم تكن كلها تقريب ًا على املاك بفضل‬ ‫برنامج ‪ .VLC‬وهذه ميزة أخرى تقربك أكثر من‬ ‫التغيير‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٧‬إن كل متصفحات اإلنترنت املتوفرة في ويندوز‬ ‫هي أيض ًا متوفرة في ماك مثل‪Flock , SeaMonky,‬‬ ‫‪ Opera, Firefox‬واالستثناء الوحيد هنا هو إنترنت‬ ‫إكسبلورر ‪ Internet Explorer‬وكل إضافاته (مثل‬ ‫ماكستون ‪ Maxthon‬الذي انحرف إصداره األخير‬ ‫‪ 2.0‬نحو االنحدار)‪ .‬بالطبع هناك إمكانية تشغيل هذه‬ ‫البرامج في ماك أيض ًا (إقرأ‪VMware Fusion's :‬‬ ‫‪ .)Unity mode‬أضف إلى ذلك سفاري ‪ Safari‬مع‬ ‫إضافة ويب‪-‬كيت ‪ WebKit‬فإن سرعته هي األكبر‬ ‫على اإلطالق على جميع األنظمة‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٢٨‬إن حذف امللفات املوجودة في التراش ‪Trash‬‬ ‫(وتعرف باسم سلة احملذوفات ‪ Recycle Bin‬في‬ ‫ويندوز) ميكن أن يكون حذف ًا آمن ًا في ‪ OS X‬أي أنك‬ ‫لست بحاجة بعد اآلن إلى برامج الطرف الثالث بهذا‬ ‫اخلصوص‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -29‬مازال بإمكانك استخدام النقرة اليمنى ‪Right-‬‬ ‫‪ click‬في ‪ OS X‬لكن آبل ذهبت في ذلك بعيد ًا‬

‫وجعلت النقرة اليمنى أكثر مالءمة مما تتخيل‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫احلقيقة يروق لي أن أنقر نقرتني على لوحة التعقب‬ ‫ثان في املاوس‪.‬‬ ‫‪ Trackpad‬أكثر من استخدام زر ٍ‬ ‫تعودت على‬ ‫باملناسبة‪ ،‬لم يستغرق مني الكثير حتى‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ذلك‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٣٠‬هل حتتاج إلى إعداد مخدم ‪ VNC‬على ماك؟ ال‬ ‫مشكلة‪ ،‬فهو أساس ًا جزء من نظام التشغيل! باإلضافة‬ ‫إلى أن هذه امليزة ليست مخبأة حتت ثالثة طبقات في‬ ‫النظام»‪ ،‬فهي موجودة على الباحث! عالوة على ذلك‬ ‫وخالف ًا لـ ‪ Windows Remote Desktop‬فإن شاشة‬ ‫املشاركة ‪ Screen Sharing Session‬ال جت ّمد اتصال‬ ‫املستخدم عن بعد وهذا سبب رئيسي يجعلني أشمئز‬ ‫من ‪.RDS Remote Desktop Connection‬‬ ‫‪ -٣١‬ال متلك مايكروسوفت برنامج ًا على غرار آي‪-‬اليف‬ ‫‪ iLife‬وال حتى شيء قريب ًا منه‪ ،‬حيث أن لديها‬ ‫مجموعة برمجيات للوسائط املتعددة ‪،Multimedia‬‬ ‫ترقَى إلى املجموعة املتكاملة واملتماسكة‪ .‬قد‬ ‫لكنها ال ْ‬ ‫تتحسن األمور الحق ًا مع ازدياد تطور اليڤ ‪Live‬‬ ‫مستقبالً‪.‬‬ ‫لست بحاجة إللقاء التهم جزاف ًا على آبل في‬ ‫‪َ -٣٢‬‬ ‫حال واجهتك مشكلة‪ .‬فهؤالء القوم يصنعون العتاد‬ ‫‏‪ Hardware‬ونظام التشغيل أيض ًا‪ ،‬وبذلك هم يدركون‬ ‫بالضبط ما يصنعون ويعلمون إن كانت مشكلتك من‬ ‫النوع الشائع أم ال‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٣٣‬إن تكلفة شراء جهاز ماك تقارب كلفة جهاز‬ ‫ويندوز شبيه من ناحية العتاد (ملن ال يزال ال يصدق‬ ‫ومن مازال يعتقد أن‬ ‫ذلك) مع البرامج املرفقة معه‪َ .‬‬ ‫حواسيب املاك هي أعلى سعر ًا فمن الواضح أنه لم‬ ‫يدقق أو يس ّعر جهاز ًا من قبل‪ .‬فالسعر مرتبط بالقيمة‬ ‫كنت تريد شراء حاسب‬ ‫احلقيقية لكل منتج‪ .‬وإن َ‬ ‫رخيص الثمن فإن ذلك هو اختيارك وحدك‪ .‬أضف إلى‬ ‫ذلك أن قيمة إعادة البيع ألجهزة ماك هي أعلى من‬ ‫مثيالتها من حواسيب ويندوز‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٣٤‬تستطيع تسجيل احملادثات بالصوت والصورة‬ ‫من خالل آي‪-‬تشات ‪ iChat 4.0‬املرفق مع النظام‪.‬‬ ‫يالها من فكرة رائعة أن تتبادل مع اآلخرين ما سجلته‬ ‫قبل قليل من فيديو! هذا ما أسميه مجاز ًا "االنتقال‬ ‫عبر الزمن"‪ .‬إنها مليزة مفيدة جد ًا ألولئك الذين يجرون‬ ‫حوارات ومقابالت كثيرة‪ ،‬أما كمستخدم منزلي‬ ‫فقد يفيد في حفظ رسائل الفيديو بني أفراد العائلة‬ ‫ولألجيال القادمة‪.‬‬ ‫‪ -٣٥‬يعمل برنامج داش‪-‬كود ‪ Dashcode‬على تسهيل‬ ‫بناء األدوات ‪ .widget-building‬وباإلضافة إلى ذلك‪،‬‬ ‫تعمل أداة ‪ Web Clippings‬اجلديدة أفضل بكثير من‬ ‫مثيالتها من منتجات مايكروسوفت و ياهو وجوجل‪...‬‬ ‫مثل هذه امليزة تعطي املستخدم حرية مفتوحة في‬ ‫اخليارات‪...‬‬ ‫‪ -٣٦‬عند االشتراك بـ دوت ماك ‪ .Mac‬تستطيع جعل‬ ‫إعدادات حاسوبك مطابقة ألي حاسوب آخر مرتبط‬ ‫أيض ًا بنفس حساب دوت ماك‪ ،‬فما عليك لتنفيذ ذلك‬ ‫إال إعداد الدوك ‪ Dock‬أو تفضيالت النظام ‪System‬‬ ‫‪ Preferences‬على حاسوب واحد وستتوحد هذه‬ ‫اإلعدادات على باقي احلواسيب األخرى‪ .‬شيء ال‬ ‫يصدق!‬

‫بإيجاد ماكنت أبحث عنه فقط‪ ،‬بل قام بأخذي مباشرة ‪ Explorer‬كما ي ّدعي أيض ًا منتقدو املاك‪ .‬لكن متهلوا‬ ‫‪ -٣٧‬بعكس ويندوز وإدارته للخطوط ‪ ،Fonts‬فإنك‬ ‫هناك برنامج للماك يفي بالغرض بدي ًال عن املستكشف‬ ‫قادر في ليبارد على اختيار تفعيل اخلطوط التي حتتاج إلى املوضع املطلوب‪ .‬وفي احلقيقة لست متأكد ًا بأنه‬ ‫أال وهو‪.Path Finder‬‬ ‫دقيق مئة في املئة لكنه لم يخذلني أبد ًا حتى اليوم‪.‬‬ ‫إليها فقط‪ .‬وهذا يسهم إلى حد كبير في التوفير من‬ ‫قدرات النظام بد ًال من أن تبقى جميع اخلطوط مف ّعلة‬ ‫‪ -٥٠‬لقد قلتها من قبل‪ ،‬وسأقولها ثانية‪ :‬إن مستخدمي‬ ‫‪ -٤٥‬إن احلسابات من نوع الضيف ‪Guest‬‬ .‬إنها حقيقة‬ ‫املستخدم "الضيف"‪ .‬هذا ممتاز! ومن جهة أخرى‪،‬‬ ‫أعلنت خيبة أملي الكاملة بكل‬ ‫قاسية بالفعل‪ .‬ولقد‬ ‫تفتقر صالحيات هذا النوع من احلسابات إلى‬ ‫‪ -٣٨‬أصبح أوتوميتر ‪ Automator‬يدعم تسجيل‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫الواجهة األمنية (غير أن معظم زواري هم من األميني‬ ‫شيء يتعلق بأوفيس ‪ ٢٠٠٨‬للماك ‪Mac Office‬‬ ‫وإعادة عرض واجهة املستخدم‪ ،‬وهذا يعني أنك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاسوبيا)‪.‬‬ ‫‪ ،2008‬األمر الذي سيجعلني أبتعد كل البعد عن كل‬ ‫تستطيع وبكل سهولة إنشاء ماكرو ‪ Macro‬بدون‬ ‫برامج مايكروسوفت‪.‬‬ ‫أدنى معرفة في املنطق‪ .‬إن آخر‬ ‫نسخة‬ ‫مسجل في ويندوز كان‬ ‫ماكرو‬ ‫ِّ‬ ‫أرجو أال تُفهم هذه املقالة على أنها‬ ‪System‬‬ ‫املواعيد أو دفتر العناوين‪ ،‬إلخ‪ .‬لن جتد مثل هذه امليزة‬ ‫‪ Preferences‬هو دائم ًا نفسه (‪Command +‬‬ ‫إال في إضافة غالية الثمن تث ّبت داخل مايكروسوفت‬ ‫‪ )Comma‬في اي برنامج‪ .‬سهل وسريع ‫لترتيب الصور‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬أنقر الصور ‪ Photos‬في قائمة املصادر‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 2‬إختر ‪ View < Sort Photos‬و إختر أحد اخليارات التالية من‬ ‫القائمة الفرعية ‪:‬‬ ‫حسب التاريخ‪ ،‬يتم ترتيب الصور حسب التاريخ الذي ألتقطت فيه‪.‬‬

‫حسب الكلمات املفتاحية‪ ،‬ينظم الصور بالترتيب األبجدي حسب‬ ‫الكلمات املفتاحية التي عينتها للصور‪.‬‬ ‫حسب العنوان‪ ،‬رتب الصور أبجديا حسب عنوان الصورة‪.‬‬ ‫حسب التقييم‪ ،‬رتب الصور من األقل تقييما إلى األعلى‪.‬‬

‫الدرس الثاني ‪ :‬نظم و اعرض صورك‬

‫بعد استيرادك لصورك إلى آي فوتو‪ ،‬حان الوقت لتقوم بعرضهم و‬ ‫ترتيبهم‪ ،‬إضافة بعض الكلمات املفتاحية و عرض الصور حسب هذه‬ ‫الكلمات‪ ،‬ثم صنع البوم صور‪.‬‬ ‫لتجد صورك‪:‬‬ ‫في آي فوتو كل الصور تخزن في املكتبه‪ .‬و ميكنك مشاهدة الصور‬ ‫في املكتبه عن طريق الضغط على أحداث ‪ ،Events‬التي توجد في‬ ‫أعلى قائمة املصدر على يسار إطار آي فوتو‪.‬‬

‫إستخدام الكلمات املفتاحيه‬ ‫الكلمات املفتاحية هي كلمات تضيفها للصور حتى تعرف موضوعها‪ ،‬مثل‬ ‫« عيد ميالد» أو « رياضات»‪ ،‬فيمكنك إيجاد صورك من صنف محدد‪.‬‬ ‫يأتي أي فوتو مع بعض الكلمات املفتاحيه البسيطه‪ ،‬فيمكنك تعيني‬ ‫هذه الكلمات لصورك أو إضافة كلماتك املفتاحيه اخلاصة عن طريق‬ ‫تعديل قائمة الكلمات املفتاحيه‪.‬‬ ‫لتعيني كلمات مفتاحيه لصورك ‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬حدد الصور التي تريد أن تضيف كلمات مفتاحيه لها‪ .‬و لتفعل‬ ‫هذا حدد األحداث ‪ Events‬من قائمة املصادر‪ ،‬و أنقر نقرا مزدوجا‬ ‫على حدث معني إلستعراض الصور التي فيه‪ ،‬ثم أنقر لتحدد‬ ‫الصوره‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 2‬إختر ‪( Window < show keywords‬نافذة > أظهر الكلمات‬ ‫املفتاحيه) لفتح نافذة الكلمات املفتاحيه‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 3‬أنقر لتحدد الكلمة املفتاحيه التي تريد تعيينها للصوره‪ .‬ميكنك‬ ‫أن حتدد كلمة مفتاحية واحدة أو أكثر‪ .‬إلزالة حتديد كلمة مفتاحية‬ ‫أنقر عليها مجددا‪.‬‬ ‫إلضافة كلماتك املفتاحيه اخلاصة لقائمة الكلمات املفتاحيه ‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬إختر ‪. window < show Keywords‬‬ ‫‪ 2‬أنقر زر حترير الكلمات املفتاحيه ‪. Edit Keywords‬‬ ‫‪ 3‬أنقر زر إضافة ‪.)+( Add‬‬

‫في املكتبه‪ ،‬الصور تصنف في مجموعات حسب السنة واحلدث‬ ‫(ميكن للحدث أن ميثل فلم كاميرا مخزن على قرص مدمج‪ ،‬أو‬ ‫مجموعة من الصور إستوردتها من كاميرتك الرقميه)‪.‬‬ ‫يعرض آي فوتو الصور بالترتيب الذي إستوردتهم فيه‪ .‬ولتعرض‬ ‫بسرعة آخر الصور التي مت استيرادها‪ ،‬انقر آيقونة املستورد مؤخرا‬ ‫‪ Last import‬في قائمة املصادر‪ ،‬النقر على أخر ‪ 12‬شهر ‪last 12‬‬ ‫‪ months‬سيعرض كمية أكبر من الصور‪.‬‬ ‫ميكنك عرض الصور في املكتبه عن طريق ترتيبهم بعدة طرق‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 12‬إصدارة َشفل من ماك االمارات العدد الثامن عشر‬

‫‪ 4‬أكتب الكلمه املفتاحيه اجلديده‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 5‬أنقر ‪.OK‬‬ ‫كما تستطيع حذف الكلمات املفتاحيه‪ ،‬إعادة تسميتها‪ ،‬أو إضافة‬ ‫أسماء مختصره للكلمات املفتاحيه الطويلة‪.‬‬ ‫مهم ‪ :‬تعديل كلمه مفتاحيه يغير الكلمه املفتاحيه في أي صوره عينة‬ ‫لها هذه الكلمه املفتاحيه‪.‬‬ ‫البحث عن الصور حسب الكلمات املفتاحيه ‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬إضغط على أيقونة البحث ( على يسار حقل البحث )‪.‬‬

‫لعمل ألبوم صور‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬أنقر زر اإلضافة ‪ +‬في الزاوية اليسرى في أسفل إطار آي فوتو‪.‬‬

‫تقييم صورك املفضله ‪:‬‬ ‫ميكنك تقييم صورك بالنجوم من جنمه واحده إلى خمسة جنوم لتبني‬ ‫مدى إعجابك بالصور‪ .‬كما أن تقييم الصور سيسهل تنظيمها و‬ ‫البحث عنها الحقا‪.‬‬

‫‪ 2‬أنقر على زر ‪ Album‬في اإلطار الظاهر‪.‬‬

‫لتقييم صوره ‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1‬أنقر لتحدد الصور أو الصور التي تريدها‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 2‬إختر ‪ ،My Rating < Photos‬ثم إختر عدد النجوم التي تعيينها‬ ‫للصوره من القائمه الفرعيه‪.‬‬ ‫تنظيم صورك‬ ‫ميكنك جتميع صورك على شكل ألبومات لتنظيم مكتبة صورك بشكل‬ ‫أفضل‪ ،‬أو أن تضع الصور التي تريد أن تضعها على قرص مدمج‬ ‫أو ‪ DVD‬مع بعضها البعض‪ ،‬أو أن تختار الصور التي تريد نشرها‬ ‫على الويب‪ ،‬على سبيل املثال‪.‬‬ ‫كما ميكنك إستخدام األلبومات كمكان مؤقت تضع فيه مجموعة‬ ‫صور حتى تكون جاهزا لتصنع شيء أخر من هذه الصور‪ ،‬مثل‬ ‫عروض الشرائح‪ ،‬الكتب‪ ،‬التقاومي‪ ،‬أو بطاقات التهنئة‪ ،‬أو أن تقوم‬ ‫بنشرهم على معرض الصور اخلاص بك على الويب‪ .‬لن تتأثر الصور‬

‫‪ 3‬أكتب إسم األلبوم و أنقر ‪.Create‬‬ ‫سوف يظهر األلبوم اجلديد في قائمة املصادر‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 4‬أنقر األحداث ‪ Events‬في قائمة املصادر‪ ،‬و إفتح حدث معني‬ ‫بالنقر املزدوج‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 5‬إسحب الصور من األحداث إلى األلبوم اجلديد في قائمة‬ ‫املصادر‪.‬‬ ‫وميكنك سحب صور من أكثر من حدث لتضعها في األلبوم اجلديد‪.‬‬ ‫كما ميكنك سحب صور مباشرة من ألبوم أخر‪ ،‬من قرص مدمج‬ ‫أو ‪ ،DVD‬أو من مكان أخر على قرصك الصلب‪ .‬و عندما تضيف‬ ‫صوره إلى األلبوم بهذه الطريقه‪ ،‬سيقوم أي فوتو بإستيرادها إلى‬ ‫مكتبتك مباشرة‪.‬‬ ‫و ميكنك كذلك عمل األلبومات الذكيه التي تتحدث بشكل مستمر‬ ‫كلما تغيرت مكتبة الصور‪ .‬لتتعلم إستخدام األلبومات الذكيه ميكنك‬ ‫مراجعة التعليمات اخلاصة بالبرنامج‪.‬‬ ‫في التدوينة القادمه سنتعلم كيف ننشأ عرض شرائح!!‬
