Eidkoum Embarak Shufflegazine readers. We’re entering into a special period of the year with holidays, families getting together, gifts, and celebrations. I know many of you were expecting the November issue and we’ve mailed it out to all subscribers. So unfortunately some deadlines were not met. I guess we can see it as a part of our growing pains, trying to figure out how publishing works. Shufflegazine’s year is coming to an end and despite that hick-up in November it has been great year for us. This is only our third issue after re-branding as Shufflegazine and we have big plans for the future. We hope you will join us on this journey as we bring you the best of Apple lifestyle news, information, tutorials, reviews, and more from around the Middle East. To end this year with something new and exciting that can take us into the future we’ve changed our format slightly. It was something we wanted to do anyway sooner or later. NEWS | ‫األخبار‬ New iStyle Store Opens in Dubai Mall amed@shufflegazine.com ‫متجر اي ستايل الجديد في‬ ‫دبي مول‬ On the opening day of Dubai mall, November 4, 2008, all eyes were waiting to see one of the biggest shopping malls anywhere in the world and its amazing features. Apple fans were looking for something else however, the opening of the latest iStyle store. On the opening day everything was quiet. There were few signs to confirm that the mall and the iStyle store was actually opening. Shufflegazine’s team was there to check out the new store. It is very stylish with its white walls, light hardwood floor, and its wonderful lighting system. Overall it looks very similar to Apple stores in the US or Europe. In a similar way to the overall mall, the new iStyle store is spacious and is the biggest one yet to carry the iStyle badge. There’s a kids area where children can sit on cushions and enjoy playing on Macs. All the latest Macs and iPods are prominently displayed, along with a wide selection of accessories. A new feature in the store is the customer service desk, which provides technical support for clients in case of questions or repairs. As the store opened its doors at 2pm on the first day, they were already serving their first customer shortly thereafter. We’ll come back with news of this and other iStyle stores in future issues of Shufflegazine.

Spotlight ‫سبوت اليت‬ Apple sold 6.9 million units of the iPhone 3G in the quarter ending in September. This is in comparison to 6.1 million Blackberry handsets sold by Research In Motion (RIM). Upcoming iPhone sales are widely expected to be hurt by the widespread economic downturn. The number of mobile phones with touch screen is expected to nearly triple by 2010 to 362 million, up from 120 million in 2007, according to research firm iSuppli Corp. Apple’s iPhone is the most popular touch screen mobile phone to date.

Dubai World Games Expo 2008 was staged under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, from 28 to 30 October, 2008, at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center. Both officials and participating companies pointed to the bright future of Mac games, which should witness a huge growth within the next few years. Some of the participating companies showed their games dedicated to Macs, iPhones and iPods. Other companies unveiled their future plans to increase

or start developing games for Macs. Even local game designers are also on board, as exemplified by a Jordanian game maker’s intention to start their production of Apple-compatible games with Arabic and local features. The Expo and the conferences that ran parallel to the shows have made substantial and positive impacts on the entire branches of the industry. Even though this is still a fairly new market in our region, over 18000 people visited the event, which is widely seen as facilitating the entry of international corporations into the region.

The expected official introduction of the iPhone varies from within a month to early next year. Etisalat as well as Du had no comments on this, but it’s expected that both carriers will offer the iPhone when it’s introduced, based on previous statements by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

Applied Digital Media Services (ADMS) carried out short workshops on various software applications, mainly on Macs, at the Media and Marketing Show (MMS) in October 2008. These workshops included various programs from the Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, which

proved to be very popular among the visitors to the show. ADMS, a training company in Dubai, offers digital media training courses including digital editing, web design and development, motion graphics, sound design and desktop publishing.

Apple is well known as a great consumer electronics company, which always bring out marvelous products like the iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air, and more. During the course of its journey, Apple has given the world a unique type of user experience for all kinds of users. But if we’re ahead in so many areas, why do we feel that we’re behind when it comes to gaming? Will gaming be the frontier Apple conquers next?

Apple announced in 2006 that processors from Intel would replace the PowerPC chip they had been using in Mac computers since 1994. That gave gamers everywhere hope that there might be more Apple compatible games, but the last three years did not witness the big changes some anticipated. The main reason that has prevented major game developers

from not fully entering the Mac gaming world are financial issues. Most gaming industry experts seem to acknowledge that the relative lack of video games ported to Mac or developed directly for Mac is due in a large part to Apple’s relatively small share of the personal computer market. But, on the other hand, Forrester Research estimates that by 2015 the number of PCs in use globally will reach 2 billion, which includes 240 million Macs. These numbers should attract game developers to pay more attention to the bright future of the Mac, especially with more standardized hardware across platforms as well as cross-platform technologies such as TransGaming’s Cider technology. So shifting to Intel processors isn’t the answer to all

problems with game porting and development, as there are still issues concerning the operating system and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). In conclusion, the shift to Intel processors has definitely made life easier for Mac game developers, but there are other technical hurdles facing them. We still hope that the cooperation between Apple, Intel, NVIDIA and other companies will lead to new gaming wonders.

“No more new Macs this year,” an Apple spokesperson said and in doing so he cooled down the expectations of a last minute update to the Mac line. Mark Papermaster, formerly of IBM, joins Apple as Senior vice President of Devices Hardware Engineering. IBM sues him saying he cannot join a competing company. A US Court later orders Papermaster to stop working at Apple until the case with IBM comes to an end.

iPod, leaves his position as Senior Vice President of the iPod Division, gets $300,000 annual salary as new special advisor to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Fadell, who is replaced by Papermaster, will receive $300,000 annually and other benefits.

Parallels announced the availability of version 4.0 of its Desktop for Mac product, which lets Mac users run Windows on their Macs. The new version suppors DirectX 9, DirectX Pixel Shader 2.0 and OpenGL 2.0.

More Arabic Software

I am a teacher, using my Mac in preparing my work. It helps me a lot in regard to saving time and making my work look better. VMWare’s a Winner

As a recent switcher from PC to Mac, I was most interested in your latest issue, and in particular with your articles on virtual machine software. So much so, that last week I ran out to purchase VMware Fusion. I’m really impressed with how easy this software allows me to jump from Windows to Mac applications using Exposé. It has also given me the ability to access files on my OS X, and the VMware window can be easily resized and moved - allowing me to regard it as just another regular OS X window. All in all I’d say it’s the best thing since sliced bread was invented. Thanks again for bringing it to our attention. -BN That’s very nice to hear, BN. Q: I have a brand new MacBook and it obviously has an Intel processor. I understand the Macs used to have different processors in them, and someone said old games cannot be played on new Intel Macs. Is that true? A: In 2006 Apple switched to using processors from Intel, previously having used the PowerPC (PPC) processors from IBM and Motorola. Luckily Apple built support into Mac OS X called Rosetta, which means you can still run pretty much any PPC software on your Intel Mac, albeit sometimes at a slower speed. When it comes to games, many PPC games still work great. Take the classic Return to Castle Wolfenstein, for example. It still plays great on my MacBook even at high quality graphics settings. I’d say that if you have some older PPC games (and Return to Castle Wolfenstein is actually PPC) and an Intel Mac, try the game on the Mac and most of the time it will run just as well if not better than on an old Mac. Q: Today I was trying to use Windows with BootCamp and connect to a projector, but

I couldn’t get it to work no matter what I tried. Is it not compatible or what do I need to do? A: This is an issue I’ve never come across myself before so I had to try it. With a MacBook Pro and Windows Vista it was no problem at all to get our office projector to work. You didn’t say whether you’re running Windows XP or Vista, so I can only assume you’re running XP. I’ve seen suggestions online saying you could try updating the graphics card drivers in Windows, that might help. Other than that, and trying to get the settings right in the Display Control Panel in Windows, without looking at your setup I’m not sure I can be much help; especially since it worked right away for me with a MacBook Pro and Windows Vista. Q: A web page I visit a lot has changed. I know this because at work it has new stuff on it but at home it still shows the old page. What’s wrong and what can I do? A: Most likely the old page is still in your browser’s cache at home. Everything a web browser displays is stored on your hard drive in what’s

called a cache, a temporary storage place, before it’s displayed. And if the browser has to go back to the same page as before and the files are in the cache they are displayed from there instead of downloaded to save time. If a page changes of course it should connect and get the latest version but it doesn’t always work. In Safari try to empty the cache (Safari > Empty Cache), in Firefox hold down the Shift key while clicking on the Reload button. Q: I want to buy a new iMac, how much memory should I get? A: Not an easy question to answer. If you’re a regular user doing email, web, chat, casual photos, letters, etc. then 2GB is enough and pretty much standard on new Macs today. If you want to do more serious photo and video editing then get 4GB. RAM is not so much of a cost today so buy one step better than what you think you need today, then you’re as future-proof as you can be.

What do you do when you have multiple applications open and there’s one in the background that you want to see but it’s partially obscured by the current application? For example, you’re typing in your word processor, and you’d like to see the web page you previously opened in your browser. Fortunately Mac OS X has a cool feature called Exposé, which makes it easy to find and bring forward windows of different applications when your desktop is cluttered. Just press the F9 key to activate Exposé and see all your open windows (Fn-F9 on a laptop.) This allows you to view thumbnail versions of all of them, and by clicking one you quickly switch to any open window. Now what if you have lots of applications open and you want to view only your desktop? Press F11 (Fn-F11 on a laptop.) Another sweet workflow feature that Mac OSX offers is the Spaces command – Press F8 (Fn-F8 on a laptop.) With Spaces, you can arrange all the cluttered windows on your screen into multiple, separate areas. Each of these areas functions like its own desktop, so that when you use Exposé only the windows in that Space are seen.

And the best part is that you can set programs to open by default in certain Spaces. If you’ve ever seen a “Mac power user” in action, you’d have seen them engaging in a finger dance comprising these three magical shortcuts: F8 (Spaces), F9 (Exposé) and F11 (Desktop) to work with multiple applications at one time and to flip flop between work-based applications and general web browsing. Spaces and Exposé are simple, savvy and smart. And because of this, they provide us an insight into what the Mac experience is really about.

We were the first publication in the Middle East to review the new cool Aluminum MacBook in the last issue. Today, we take a look at its big brother, the 15inch MacBook Pro. From the packaging to the screen, and everything in between, this is a thing of beauty. As you lift up the screen, you’re welcomed by a black glossy edge to edge screen, with your big smiley face reflected in it. The glossy screen is indeed irritating at times, but a

quick adjustment of the screen angle and it’s usually fine; and it does make colors look very good. Build quality of the unibody is very special and the design is spectacular: the keyboard with its black keys lights up with a soothing back light for low light conditions; the speakers are thousands of tiny holes drilled in the aluminum body, which produce a clear sharp sound compared to plastic laptops; the all glass track pad, and more.

‫بفضل اللة كنا اول مجلة قام بعرض‬ ‫ماكبوك في العدد السابق و اليوم وصل‬ ‫الينا االخ االكبر ماكبوك برو ذو ‪ 15‬بوصة‪.‬‬ ‫تم توصيل طرد ماكبوك برو الي مكتبنا‬ ‫بواسطة فيدكس بعد ان تمت والدتة في‬ ‫الصين ثم قطع االف االميال الى الواليات‬ ‫المتحدة و اخيرًا الي دبي و قد قمنا بمتابعة‬ ‫الطرد خالل هذة الرحلة حتي وصل الي دبي‪.‬‬ ‫طريقة التغليف في حد ذاتها جميلة و‬ ‫اعتقد ان محبي ابل سيفهمون ما اعني‪.‬‬ ‫االن يمكنك ان تقطع الغالف البالستيكي‬ ‫بمدية حادة ثم تفض الغطاء برفق و حينها‬ ‫تشم رائحة ابل‪ ،‬ادهشني كيف اعتنوا بكل‬ ‫التفاصيل ليس فقط لضمان سالمة وصول‬ ‫الحاسب اليك و لكن لكي تستمتع باللحظة‬ ‫ايضًا و اعتقد انة يمكنني المضي في‬ ‫الحديث قدمًا عن التغليف لصفحات طويلة‪.‬‬ ‫لقد قمنا بطلب ماكبوك برو ذو مشغل انتل‬ ‫كورتودو ‪ 2.4‬جيجابايت و ‪ 4‬جيجابايت رام و‬ ‫قرص صلب بسعة ‪ 250‬جيجابايت و سوف‬ ‫يتم تسليمة قريبًا الي قسم التصميم‬ ‫بالشركة‪.‬‬ ‫الحاسب يبدو للوهلة االولى اقل قوة من‬ ‫الكثير من الحاسبات االخري الرخيصة و‬ ‫لكنك ال تنخدع اذ ان هذا الجهاز يحوي قوة‬ ‫جبارة و لكنها طريقة ابل في تقديم اداء و‬ ‫معايير تجعل من الحاسبات االخري ال شيء‪.‬‬ ‫ما ان ترفع الشاشة حتي تري مدي اتساعها‬ ‫من كال الحافتين و ابتسامتك منعكسة‬ ‫عليها‪ ،‬و االن اشعر بالقوة ها هو الجهاز‬ ‫يعمل و ما هي اال خطوات بسيطة و ممتعة‬ ‫لوضع االعدادات و فى اقل من دقيقتين‬

‫يصبح الحاسب جاهز للعمل‪.‬‬ ‫االنطباع االول الذى شعرت بة كان الريبة‬ ‫في بداية االمر مع انني احب ماكبوك ذو ‪13‬‬ ‫بوصة و ماكبوك برو ذو ‪ 17‬بوصة و لكنني‬ ‫لم اكن ابدًا من محبي الحلول الوسط‬ ‫القتناء حاسب ذو ‪ 15‬بوصة و لكن طريقة‬ ‫تصميم البدن الواحد مميزة جدًا لدرجة‬ ‫انني يمكن ان اعلق الحاسب كعمل فني‬ ‫علي الحائط اذ ان كل قطعة من ماكبوك‬ ‫برو تحتفي بشىء ما‪ ،‬على سبيل المثال‬ ‫لوحة الفاتيح ذات االزرارالسوداء و الضوء‬ ‫السفلى الذي يظهر عند قلة االضاءة‬ ‫الخارجية‪ ،‬و مكبر الصوت يتكون من‬ ‫االف الثقوب المنحوتة في البدن‬ ‫االلومنيومي و التي توفر صوت‬ ‫نقي و واضح مقارنة مع صوت‬ ‫الحاسبات البالستيكية‬ ‫الرخيصة‪ ،‬و هناك ايضًا‬ ‫لوحة التحكم و العديد‬ ‫من االشياء الجميلة‪.‬‬ ‫كانت يدي تمتد لكي‬ ‫تلمس كل شيء في‬ ‫نفس الوقت ابتداءًا من‬ ‫التشغيل و محاولة مشاهدة‬ ‫دي في دي‪ .‬هناك ايضًا التغيير الذى‬ ‫حدث في لوحة التحكم و الذى اردت‬ ‫ان اعتاد علية و و جدت انني ال احتاج الي‬ ‫قراءة دليل او كتاب اذ ان هناك فيلم فيديو‬ ‫في ‪ System Preferences‬يريك كيفية‬ ‫استخدامها و لكن احذر اذ يجب عليك‬ ‫ان تمرن اصابعك قبل ان تبدأ في القيام‬ ‫بالحركات التي يعرضها الشريط‪.‬‬

That it is also one of the‬‬ ‫‪most powerful notebooks available today makes‬‬ ‫‪the offer all that more tempting for anyone looking‬‬ ‫‪for a mobile powerhouse.‬‬ ‫بعد ما تعديت مرحلة االرتباك بسبب لوحة التحكم‬ ‫الجديدة قررت ان اراصل االكتشاف لذا قمت بتوصيل‬ ‫ماكبوك برو باالنترنت عن طريق واي فاي و بدأت في‬ ‫تحميل بعض االشياء من ايتيونز و العديد من المهام‬ ‫االخرى التى اقوم بها عادة بدأت ان اشعر بااللفة مع‬ ‫ماكبوك برو و بعد تنزيل البرامج العتادة لدي مثل (تويتر)‬ ‫و (داشبورد) و اعداد البريد االليكترونى‪ .‬مع اننى لم ارد‬ ‫ان ارهق الجهاز سريعًا اال اننى شعرت بانة يقوم بالمهام‬ ‫سريعًا‪ ،‬اسرع من الوقت المعتاد مع حاسبي ماكبوك برو‬ ‫‪ 17‬بوصة القديم‪.‬‬ ‫و بالمقارنة مع ماكبوك برو ذو ‪ 17‬بوصة فان الموديل‬ ‫الجديد ادهشني بسرعتة و اناقتة‪ .‬المظهر االلومنيومي‬ ‫الممزوج باللون االسود ليس جديد على الحاسبات‬ ‫الشخصية و لكن السر يكمن في كيفية مزجهما معًا‪.‬‬ ‫االمر الوحيد الذي جعلني اشعر بالندم هو انني كان‬ ‫يجب على ان اضع ماكبوك برو ‪ 15‬بوصة فى العلبة مرة‬ ‫اخري لكى اسلمة الى عضو اخر في الفريق‪ .‬و قبل ان‬ ‫اترك ماكبوك برو أود ان اشكرة علي الوقت الذى امضاة‬ ‫معى ذلك الحاسب الرائع‪.‬‬

In Spore you guide a civilization from amoeba to space age. Starting as a small amoeba, swimming around in the primordial ooze that covered the earth before life emerged to start living on land, you run away from what’s larger than you and hunt what’s smaller than yourself. During this process you can evolve your amoeba and equip it with eyes to see better, tentacles to swim faster, mouth to eat better, etc. The balance of how you evolve your amoeba decides in part how successful it will be throughout its life. Once you emerge to live on land you follow the same principle of evolving your character, but then you also have a community to take care of and you have to fight off others who try to encroach on your territory and kill you and your people off. The five stages in Spore are Cell, Creature, Tribal, Civilization, and Space. Although distinctly different,

they also share many characteristics so game play is familiar throughout. In each stage you can tweak your creation to give it a better chance of success and also share your creations online. Put different eyes on your creature, pick what to build in your village, what the citizens in your city should work on, etc. Every tweak you do has the possibility to steer your creation in a different direction, be it success or destruction. And therein lies a great strength with Spore, it’s infinitely re-playable with endless possibilities and iterations. Spore is an amazing adventure with graphics and sound that are sure to impress you. The game is let down a bit by controls that are not exact and often confusing. But if you can live with those quirky controls, Spore is a great game for the family living room computer.

‫نداء الواجب ( كول اوف ديوتي) ‪ :٤‬استمرار للحرب القديمة‬ ‫التي بدأت في الجزء االول من سلسة نداء الواجب و التي‬ ‫صدرت لنظام ماك في عام ‪ 2004‬اثناء هذة الحرب تري‬ ‫االحداث من خالل شخص معين‪ ،‬هو جندي يتواجد في‬ ‫اماكن عديدة بالشرق االوسط و االتحاد السوفيتي السابق‬ ‫و يقاتل كجزء من وحدة صغيرة متنقلة و يتم استخدام‬ ‫احدث و افضل االسلحة من اجل محاربة االرهاب‪.‬‬ ‫تبدأ االحداث بعميلة انزال بحري علي احدي السفن في بحر‬ ‫هائج‪ ,‬حيث تصارع لكي تجد طريقك علي السفينة من اجل‬ ‫العثور علي جهاز نووي تمت سرقتة من قبل االرهابيين‬ ‫ثم يبدأ القتال من خالل المنازل في احدي دول الشرق‬ ‫االوسط و ايضًا بعض مهمات القناصين في االتحاد‬

‫السوفيتي السابق من اجل اكتشاف اماكن بعض الروؤس‬ ‫النووية‪ ،‬كما تري المهام متعددة و في بيئات مختلفة‬ ‫حيث يجب عليك في بعض االوقات ان تركض و تتصرف‬ ‫باقصي سرعة اذ ترتفع حدة التوتر وفي اوقات اخري تقوم‬ ‫بالمهام بهدوء و حرص و حساب لكل خطواتك القادمة‬ ‫مما يجعل اللعبة مسلية و ال تمل منها بسرعة‪.‬‬ ‫الرسومات ممتازة و الصوت مدهش مما يجعل من الصعب‬ ‫ان تقارن بين لعبة نداء الواجب ‪ 4‬و اي لعبة ماك اخري من‬ ‫حيث جودة الرسومات و الصوت مما يعني انك تحتاج الي‬ ‫حاسب ماك سريع و حدة ( كارت) صوت جيد و اعتقد انك‬ ‫تستطيع االستمتاع باللعبة علي معظم شاشات ماك‬ ‫الحديثة‪.‬‬

This is a first-person shooter, meaning you see the action from the viewpoint of a person, in this case a soldier in various modern locales from the Middle East and former Soviet Union. You’re a part of a small, modern, mobile fighting unit and you get to use some of the best and latest weapons in your fight against terrorism. You start by rapelling from a helicopter into a ship in rough seas, fighting your way through the ship as you try to find a nuclear device that’s been stolen by terrorists. You continue with tough fights from house to house somewhere in the Middle East, sniper missions in the former Soviet Union, as you try to recover nuclear warheads. Missions are varied and

different in nature. Sometimes you have to run and act as fast as you can with stress levels rising. Other times you have to take it easy, be patient, and carefully calculate your next move. This makes for a very interesting gaming experience, preventing you from easily getting bored. The graphics are stunning, even on lower-quality settings, and the sound is amazing. It’s hard to think about another Mac game that looks and sounds as good as Call of Duty 4. This all means that you need a pretty fast Mac and good graphics card, though, but it should play well on most recent Macs. In short, if you’re a fan of this type of game, Call of Duty 4 is a ‘must-have’ for your collection. It’s just that good.

I have personally not liked recent versions of Norton antivirus products for Mac much, I admit that. They’ve struck me as requiring a lot of system resources and slowing systems down. However, after using this latest version for a few weeks I can now report it is very transparent and sits in the background without seemingly slowing things down. With previous versions I often experienced strange freezes and crashes and, I’m also happy to report I’ve seen nothing of that with this latest version. The dual protection package combines Norton AntiVirus 2008 for Windows with Norton AntiVirus 11 for Mac. The clear target is users who run both Mac OS X and Windows on their Macs, whether it’s with Boot Camp, Fusion, Parallels or another solution (see November’s issue of Shufflegazine for more on these options).

I’ll focus on the functionality on the Mac side: By and large Norton Antivirus 11 stays out of the way doing it’s job. It doesn’t seem to slow things down or cause crashes on my MacBook (2.4GHz, 4GB, 128GB SSD), and for that I’m glad. LiveUpdate will automatically connect to Symantec’s servers on a regular basis to check for and download updates. It’s not something you have to worry about, it just happens. Whether it actually protects me much from any nasty things is pretty much impossible to say until we have widespread attacks on the Mac platform, and by that time we’ll know we need it anyway. But for now, it’s debatable whether you even need antivirus protection for your Mac, but it’s not an option when it comes to Windows. If you run both, then this is a good offer.

The standard graphics card in Mac Pro is an ATI card and it’s not bad at all for gaming. But if you want to take that up a notch to get better frame rates, you have to invest in an upgrade. The NVIDIA 8800 GT for Mac Pro upgrade is available for all Mac Pros, but it comes in a different kit for the first Mac Pros and the more recent models. In games like Call of Duty 4 you’ll see a significant increase in graphics performance. A LAN Party is basically when a group of people connect their computers together in a Local Area Network (LAN) to play a game with or against each other. This is a common occurrence among Windows PC gamers but not so common among Mac gamers, so we wanted to show you how you can do it. It may sound complicated but it’s actually pretty simple, and you can do it with the Macs you already have and the networking equipment you probably already have too. And although you might enjoy playing games alone, it gets to be much more fun when you play against other people; making it so much more real and enjoyable when you can shout at each other in anger or joy, and throw some popcorn around.

In planning this LAN Party we went through a lot of games to find a suitable one. The basic premise was that we wanted something free, small and simple enough that most players could master without major problems. And we wanted something that could run on many Macs. Therefore the latest games with multi-player capabilities, like Call of Duty 4, were ruled out. The game we picked is called AssaultCube, a free download from http:// assault.cubers.net. It’s only 19MB to download and is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux; and it’s fast even on older and somewhat graphically challenged Macs like MacBooks with Intel’s integrated graphics. Even on those MacBooks, AssaultCube runs very smoothly. This opens up the potential participation to a much wider audience than if we had run something more demanding, requiring a dedicated graphics card of a later model.

The Location

Pick a location where you can be as loud as you want to, and where you can sit up to 10 people or so. Preferably you’ll want everyone around the same table, but at the very least they need to be in the same room. That close personal interaction is important in LAN Parties such as this. There needs to be room for everyone to use their mouse, and you also have to make room for plenty of popcorn and drinks. It’s also important to set things up so players cannot directly see what’s on other players’ screens. If they can see where others are, it’s easier for them to find them, which is unfair. Finally get some comfortable chairs because many hours will be wasted in your LAN Party.

The Networking

Obviously the Macs need to be networked somehow, and you have the option of doing it with or without wires. The typical benefit of wired networking is higher speed, especially with many computers connected, but it’s more hassle with the cables. Wireless networking is simple to set up but doesn’t necessarily have the same capacity. When testing the game play for this article we played up to 10 Macs at the same time plus one acting as the server, all connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station sitting just meters away from the Macs. And it was all very smooth and ran without any networking problems. For wired networking we recommend something like the Belkin 5-port Switch (http://tinyurl.com/6msnkx)==. Then you’ll need Ethernet cables to all participating Macs. If you have more than five Macs playing then get a switch that supports more ports, or connect several switches together. For wireless networking Apple’s Airport Extreme Base Station (http://www.apple. com/airportextreme/) is a great choice. It supports up to 50 users connected at the same time and fast 802.11n Wi-Fi networking. Place the Base Station as close to all the participating Macs as possible to keep the speed up, and you should be okay even with many players involved.

The Server

Depending on how many players you’re going to have in your LAN Party, it might be a good idea to have a dedicated game server. This is not necessary, but the more players you have the more appropriate it is. In our test with 10 players we had a dedicated server running on an Intel Mac mini. With AssaultCube there is no separate server application, you run both server and game from the same program. What we did was copy the AssaultCube file and rename one of them so it was called “AssaultCube Server”. That makes it easier to keep a server and client apart. When you start AssaultCube as a server, all you do is click on the Server icon at the top. There you can enter a number of options like giving the server a name, or setting a password and the maximum number of clients that can connect. Our suggestion is that for a LAN Party there’s no need for a password, but set the Max Clients option to the maximum number of players that will play, and no higher. Finally click “Start” to start the server. After that you can connect the clients and start playing.

To Play

As described before, you need to start the server first. Then you need to start the AssaultCube application on each Mac that will participate in the party. When the first windows appears, type in your name and click the “Fullscreen” button. If you have a good graphics card you can select some FSAA (it basically makes graphics look better) but it’s usually good enough without it. Then click the “Start” button and you’re in the game. The first thing you then do is press the Escape key so the main menu in AssaultCube appears. With the arrow keys go to “Multiplayer” and press Enter. In the second menu use the arrow keys to go to “Join LAN Game” and press Enter. AssaultCube then tries to connect to the server you’ve set up and you should be set to start playing. In the game, you control your player’s direction with the mouse and move the player with the A (sidestep left), S (backwards), D (sidestep right), and W (forward) keys. You shoot by pressing the left mouse button. There are other keys as well that you might be using as you get more advanced, but this is a very good start.

World of Warcraft (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/), or WoW for short, is a fantasy action and questing game that is played over the internet with other adventurers. WoW allows you to create your own character from a variety of races and professions, choose your skills, and forge your own legend. The detailed graphics and animation make your valiant warrior or powerful mage come to life on your computer screen.

The Macintosh is well supported by Blizzard Inc., WoW’s producer; the game client is frequently updated and plays well on any Intel based Mac and on later model G4/G5 macs with sufficient graphics cards. Playing WoW requires purchasing the game software and a monthly subscription, but the investment is rewarded with frequent content updates and and improvements. Expansion packages are also available, which offer large additions to the WoW world and many extra features. The next expansion package “The Wrath of the Litch King” was released in November 2008.

Performance

There are two main configurations in terms of processors in the Mac Pro. You can get a quad-core model with a 2.8HGz processor or an eight-core model with two processors ranging from 2.8GHz to 3.2GHz.

Memory

The Mac Pro is the most expandable Mac in Apple’s lineup, not just in terms of memory. It can accommodate eight slots of 800MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM, supporting up to 32GB of total memory.

Communications

Standard on the Mac Pro are two 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet ports and Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate (EDR). You can also add 802.11n AirPort Extreme wireless networking and external Apple USB Modem.

Display and Graphics

With the full-size expansion slot you can put almost whatever graphics you want in the Mac Pro. The options from Apple include ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256MB of memory, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of memory, and NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GB of memory.

Storage

The Mac Pro has four 3.5-inch hard drive bays. Combined they can supply up to 4TB of internal hard drive capacity. There are also two slots for SuperDrives.

Expandability

Mac Pro supports three open fulllength PCI Express expansion slots, which should be enough for even the most demanding situations.

Gaming on Mac Steam is a service from a company called Valve (http://store.steampowered.com/), which lets you skip buying the DVD box and just buy and download the game online. The caveat? It’s only for PC and not currently available for Mac, and doesn’t look like it will be for a long time, if ever. There is a first attempt to a similar service for Macs with the recent Call of Duty 4 game, but it’s far behind Steam. Missing Sync for PSP In my opinion Missing Sync for PSP, although at twice the price of PSPWare, is the more reliable and competent option. In functionality it’s very similar to PSPWare does music, photos, movies, contacts and bookmarks in much the same way, but it goes beyond that. With Missing Sync you can also sync your calendar as well as notes between your PSP and Mac.
