PROFILE

Shuonya Nava Designs (SND) was established in the year 2011 as a full service multidisciplinary Architecture and Design studio. It is an emergent architecture and design practice, engaging seamlessly in a wide range of scales and types including furniture design, graphic design, interior space design and architectural projects which include private houses, cultural projects as well as landscape and urban planning. The term Shuonya Nava comes from Sanskrit language and means number zero-nine. SND believes in an architecture rooted in life; as an integral part of ever day life, a crucial part of the environment and cultural life as well as an ongoing process of material life of growth and decay. Our design process is drawn from an analysis of factors in order to achieve the next level of excellence. Active integration of users, clients and specialists is a vital part of our process of breeding architecture. Constraints and economies are integral to life forms and we enthusiastically embrace them as generative forces. SND has developed a distinctive method to the development of contemporary architecture, with an emphasis on open spatial configurations, material transformation, refined detailing and craftsmanship. Underlying themes in the work have focused on the conceptual use of building elements, modified with both traditional and digital techniques. Combining complex geometries with local materials through digital design and fabrication processes, the studio seeks to develop a new local vernacular that engages with the landscape. SND is built on a consistent philosophy and set of values, producing projects which are situation specific rather than deploying a signature style. It treats rigorous craftsmanship which actively pursues the seamless merging of service provision and creative thinking. SNDs best skills lie precisely in this capacity to grow ideas out of constraints.

RESIDENCES

Inextricably

linked

to

designing

residences is the individuality of the client and site. Therefore our residential design endeavours to adapt to the constraints provided by these factors.

SKEW HOUSE

Location: Bangalore Client: Praveen Status: Completed in 2011 People: Nischal, Shilpa, Karthikyan Area: 3,400 sft, 316 sqm Description In order to fully utilise the possibilities of the corner site with respect to exterior views and both natural light and ventilation the notion of a continuos horizontal window was proposed for the residence. The folded envelope skin was born out of the necessity to shield the interior from the elements, i.e. water and sun but it also provided us with an opportunity to render the areas inside the wall as functional interior spaces. The complex geometry of both the interior and exterior creates a dynamic residence exciting the traditional living environment.

S H O B A RESIDENCE

Location: Nagarbhavi Client: Mrs Shobha Status: Ongoing Area: 2690 sft People: Chetan, Nayana Description: The site for the Shohba residence presented us with many constraints, perhaps the largest constraint was the site itself, on a corner, surrounded by a dense residential area. As a result we wanted to make the building introverted and inward looking, the focal point of which is a central courtyard bringing light into the structure. To combat the size of the plot we utilised the idea of split levels allowing us to differ ceiling heights and achieve a spacious layout within the house without compromising living areas.

HOUSING

India’s

population

and

urban

environment facilitates the need to develop architectural solutions for housing which mediate between the urban

and

natural

environment.

EMERSON PARK

Location: Whitefield Client: Woodshire Developers Status: Ongoing People: Chetan, Kamesh, Steve Area: 7125 sqm , 35 units Description: The ability to provide spaces which are animated by natural light and nature was fundamental to our approach towards the design of Emerson Park. Consisting of one row of town houses and another of row houses Emerson Park provides a living environment that strives to bring peace and diversity into a bustling urban environment. This is achieved through landscaping, courtyards and cutouts that improve light and ambience within the houses.

C I N N A M O N V I L L A S

Location: Chikkajala, Karnataka Client: Chetana Status: Ongoing People: Chetan, Kamesh, Steve Area: 49,093sft, 4561 sqm Description: When designing housing in Bangalore the ambience and character of the surroundings is often compromised in favour of more built up area. However from the outset our approach to cinnamon villas centred around creating a pleasant and revitalising ambience both internally and externally. Using split level planning and courtyard as well as cut-out spaces internally the villas become spacious and full of sunlight throughout the day. Externally large amounts of landscaped area and extended views to these areas contribute strongly to the design.

VERTEX TOWERS

Location: Kalyan, Mumbai Client: Vertex Newton Project Pvt. Ltd. Status: Ongoing People: Nischal, Chetan, Nayana, Nandu, Santhosh Area: 525,200 sft, 48,810 sqm Description: Born out of regulations regarding the placement of balconies in the area Kalyan, Mumbai these residential towers developed an interesting facade. The regulations meant that we decided to utilise two differing plans so as to achieve maximum comfort for occupants as well as natural light and ventilation. The main axis of the apartments varied between an L-shape and straight line so the balconies could easily alternate giving the facade a diversity and complexity.

K U M A R P R O P E R T I E S

Location: Mumbai Client: Kumar Status: Ongoing People: Chetan, Nayana, Nandu Area: 88,134 sft, 8188 sqm Description:

The life on Earth is possible because of the very basic and essential elements known as the ‘Panchabhutaas’. They are Aakaasha (Space), Vaayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal(Water) and Bhoomi (Earth). All creatures on the Earth including buildings are physically made up of these elements. For centuries, man has manipulated the the Elements to build comfortable houses even in the most hostile environments. For example, where the heat of the Sun (Fire) can make it impossible to live,LIGHT from the sun is important for our daily activities. Man has built houses with internal courtyards (Space), thick walls (Earth), slit windows (Air) and water bodies and fountains (Water) to cool the house by ensuring good ventilation and ow of air.

S S

Client: Silver Group, Mumbai Location: Palm Beach Road, Vashi, Navi Mumbai Status: Ongoing People: Praneet Verma, Ujjal Roy, Rochna Verma

Description:

The project involved the reinvigoration of an existing structure in Mumbai, on a site where the slabs and columns had been poured. Consequently the major design aims were a comfortable and unique working and shopping environment, flexible, efficient office and retail to accommodate future requirements. The internal layout and planning attempts to filter natural light through the spaces achieved through a variety of device including a glazed skylight over a large entrance atrium. Just as this natural light invigorates the architecture an internal terrace garden compliments the commercial nature of the building, the juxtaposition of which creates a fascinating structure.

INSTITUTIONS

Institutions are integral for our cities and towns providing infrastructure. Our approach to their design is that they act as an architectural object distinguishing themselves

from

the

surrounding

context, in order to be easily identified.

CMR SCHOOL

Location: Bangalore Client: CMR Group of Institutions Status: Ongoing People: Nischal, Santhosh, Rohan, Shoba Area: 35,000 sft , 3253 sqm Description:

Our concept of the classroom in the school was to make use of natural light and ventilation in a controlled manner. Subverting the traditional use of windows we decided to employ a strategy which would create both direct and indirect light giving students maximum comfort as well as views. In addition to this the resulting lighting conditions allow the student to interact in different ways with the space as the light changes. The exterior is defined by a series of grids which overlap in interesect pulling pieces out to allow for these various windows and slits.

CMR HOSTEL

Location: Bangalore Client: CMR Group of Institutions Status: Completed March 2011 People: Nischal, Kaushik, Bala Hari Krishna, Vishnu, Santhosh Area: 50,000sft, 4647 sqm

Description:

CMR Hostel is located on the site with very unique characteristics. It is surrounded on all three sides by a dense residential area in stark contrast to the dynamic and vibrant function of the student housing. Our challenge was to blend the two and at the same time redefine the stereotypical image of student housing existing in the country. Creating an introverted building, accentuated by a large atrium and courtyard space successfully fused our two ideas bringing light and a playful character to the building.

CMR LAB

Location: Bangalore Client: CMR Group of Institutions Status: Completed People: Nischal, Kaushik, Swetha Area: 9000sqft, 835 sqm Description:

Creating a playful facade which which refers to and interacts with the function of the building was a major concept behind the design of this lab. In order to bring natural light into the structure long horizontal windows are used which create a bright working environment which can be used without any artificial light at all. The southern facade which receives continuos sunlight is shaded with louvres which add a playful element to the structure and invigorate the building.

SHIMOGA S C H O O L

Location: Shimoga, Karnataka Client: Taralaburu trust Status: Proposed People: Chetan Area: 46,300sqft, 4301 sq.mt Description:

The design is guided by the landscape surrounding it. With the river flowing in the eastern side of the site it became important to have the gathering areas in the school overlooking to the River Tunga.

F A N U C

Location: Pune Client: Fanuc India Pvt Ltd. Status: Completed People: Chetan. In collaboration with Mindspace Architects, Bangalore Area: 43,200 sft, 4015 sqm Description:

The major goal when designing the Fanuc building was the idea of subverting the norm in terms of industrial architecture. Primarily the excessive use of air conditioning and power to maintain offices and buildings. In that sense the plan of the building and opening are such that natural light is able to penenetrate the structure not only minimising the need for artificial lights but also improve the work environment. A variety of strategies were used to further combat power consumption such as the materials and a double skin and roof. Gardens throughout the building give it a pleasant ambience and aesthetically provide a juxtaposition for the function of the building.

Location: Bangalore Client: UCAM Status: Ongoing People: Chetan, Nayana Area: 52065 sft, 4837 sqm Description:

In a similar fashion to the Fanuc building the UCAM campus in Bangalore is a facility which uses a lot of energy in both its production and maintenance. By giving including landscaping and water features in the design we were able to somewhat change the overall feel of the architectural proposal. Within the architecture itself we were able to once again bring light and ventilation into the structure by analysing sun and wind on the site. In order to offset the lighting required we also used solar panels on the southern facade which help power the structure and outside lighting

COMPETITIONS

Conceptual design is fundamental with concern to architecture and competitions allow us freedom in the design process to explore a plethora of issues.

Competition: Bangalore International Centre Date: Submitted July 2012 People: Chetan, Sanooj Description:

The design of this building is dictated by the landscape surrounding it. It is flanked by roads in the east, an open park in the south and a 9 m open drain in the west. As a result, entry to the building is from the road on the eastern side. The main auditorium with a blank wall fins on the west is placed on the west to create negative pressure for ventilation. These fins on the west become part of amphitheater seating of roof of the auditorium. The amphitheater at a high level has a clear view of the park on the south. Parametric strategies have been used to make the above ideas work for our external skin of the building. This has helped us have more control over these design principles using parametric techniques to evaluate the building design to reach the desired results. Grasshopper a parametric modeling plug-in for Rhino, was used, to construct through the“explicit history tree to go back and forth between models, strategies and evaluating the process for the Bangalore International Centre.

B S C P L

Location: Sadhasiva Nagar, Bangalore Client: BSCPL Status: Completed May 2013 People: Chetan, Kamesh, Raj Description: Underpinning our design for the BSCPL office interiors in Sadhasiva Nagar was the quest to bring in as much light into the office as well imprinting the character of the company onto the space. Aesthetically the office utilises yellow, the BSCPL company colour as a feature colour throughout adding vibrance and an unique identity to the office space. The effect of the natural lighting is a seemingly open work environment creating a calm space in stark contrast to many contemporary office spaces.

K R I S K O O P E R

Location: Sadhasiva Nagar, Bangalore Client: Kris Cooper Status: Completed August 2013 People: Chetan, Kamesh Description: Interior office spaces in Bangalore are often cramped and require the use of artificial lighting however in the Kris Cooper office project our major aim was to decrease the amount of lighting needed. Large windows on the side of the existing building allowed were used to bring indirect sunlight through the offices into the main working area. Deploying translucent materials throughout the cabins and work spaces meant that the amount of natural light in the space was maximised. Refined use of colour throughout the offices animated the rooms and office environment.
