8 HOUSE and homE October 2011

ith each passing night, the south Louisiana sun dips earlier into the skyline. It’s officially fall, the season that marks great times for many of us. Whether it’s about a love of football, cooler nights, fall menu changes or seasonal gardening, there’s something magical about this time of year. If the idea of night-lit gardens appeals to your senses, you’ll want to make sure to take advantage of the unique opportunity to see four private gardens in person as part of Hilltop Arboretum’s upcoming annual fall garden tour. Hilltop’s daytime tours have always been special, which assures me that this year’s “Moon Shine” version is a notto-be-missed event for the garden enthusiast. The four gardens previewed in this issue were photographed at dusk or early nightfall offering a unique perspective of the garden that is rarely captured in regional print. What’s special about these gardens is their artful landscape lighting which allows the various textures and heights of trees, shrubs and plants to come to life in a completely different way than they do in the daylight. Bathed in the right light, the spindly limbs of oak trees cast shadows while patio fountains take on a magical glow. Speaking of outdoors, I want to draw special attention to the 2011 Top Design winner of House and Home’s annual Design Awards competition. This year’s winner is R & D Builders and Design for a remodeling and redesign project in the Country Club of Louisiana, featured on pages 52-53. While the newly-designed interior spaces are spectacular, I’m a particular fan of the poolside arbor. This cozy dining space overlooks a hedgerow of tall junipers that is reminiscent of resortstyle California. With its blue Bahamian shutters and custom draperies, this arbor makes a statement of updated chic yet retains its south Louisiana flair by incorporating traditional beams and aged bricks. Welcome, fall. It’s nice to see you again.

Q: A:

“I have spoken to several homeowners who have tried to renovate or add on to their homes with results varying from lawsuits against subcontractors to projects spanning many months longer than necessary. Most homeowners lack the time to effectively coordinate the labor. I’ve heard stories about large deposits that were given to subs who failed to show for work or disappeared entirely. Hiring a licensed contractor should save you time, money and grief. But beware of hiring just any contractor. I have come behind “contractors” who ran out of money and could not finish jobs. According to state law, any construction/remodeling project with a value over $50,000 must be performed by a licensed contractor. The owner is allowed to “enter into one contract with a properly licensed general contractor for the entire cost of the project.” Further, it says “All other 14 HOUSE and homE October 2011

My husband wants to act as general contractor on our renovation project. Friends have warned that this is a bad idea. How could we be better served by hiring a renovation contractor?

contracts must be executed between the general contractor and subcontractors.” Any state licensed contractor must have both worker’s compensation and general liability insurance with a minimum of $100,000 coverage. I recommend hiring a licensed general contractor (preferably one who is a member of NAHB or a local Remodelers Council). With that selection, you’ll get many years of experience from contractors that have learned their lessons and will use their experience and knowledge to keep you, the homeowner, from paying more than the job should cost. n Richard Jackson Jackson Construction Co. rpjack33@yahoo.com Have a question for a local expert? Grossie’s Furniture, Inc. 1577-A Mills Hwy., Breaux Bridge (337) 654-8263 www.grossiescypressfurniture.com

Cypress is just about as synonymous with Cajun Country as alligators and jambalaya, making it the staple of choice for locally-made furniture pieces. In fact, handcrafted cypress furniture has a place in most Acadiana homes, a demand fulfilled locally in part by Dwayne Grossie, owner of Grossie’s Furniture in Breaux Bridge.

Describe the products and services that Grossie’s offers. We custom build cypress furniture. We specialize in dining tables, but we also build armoires, hutches, entertainment centers, coffee tables, gun cabinets and outdoor furniture. We use both antique cypress and new cypress, depending on what the customer prefers. How did the business get started? I’ve been working with wood since the early 1990s. I owned a furniture refinishing and repair business several years ago but found a greater interest in building furniture. How has Grossie’s grown over the years? It was a struggle to start out because I had to build a reputation. We have grown tremendously over the past few years. We now have a good clientele and also wholesale to furniture stores. 18 HOUSE and homE October 2011

Outdoor cypress pieces beckon passers-by on the Breaux Bridge highway outside of the furniture showroom.

At the Grossie’s showroom, a small variety of rectangular and round dining tables are available for purchase and also serve as inspiration for custom designs.

What are some of the unique products you offer? There are not a lot of businesses that custom build furniture in this area. A lot of our customers want furniture to fit in specific areas of their home. They can provide measurements or a picture and we will build to fit the customer’s specifications. Because we are a small business, we can take the time to complete each job as each customer desires.

What is a typical day like for you and your team? We normally make of list of things we need to complete that day/week. What are some of the most interesting or most difficult jobs you have worked on? Because most customers want something different and because I enjoy this type of work, I enjoy working on every job.

In Cajun Country, gun cabinets are commonplace in any hunter’s home décor.

Melissa Oivanki

What should homeowners know about your services in order to identify how your business can best assist with their needs? We custom build to suit the customer’s needs. We do our best to satisfy each and every customer.

What are the most challenging and/ or enjoyable aspects of your work? Starting a new business was most challenging. I put all my efforts into helping the business grow and it really paid off. I really enjoy seeing the product from start to finish. What are some of the trends that you see in your business? A lot of customers really like the “antique” look of the furniture. 20 HOUSE and homE October 2011

What are some of your goals for your business going forward into the future? Do you have any plans to expand or change your offerings? My goal is to continue to grow. I would like to build a bigger showroom, expand my workshop and eventually open a second location. What is your favorite part about working with your customers? My favorite part of working with the customers is when we deliver the finished product and know that the customer is satisfied. What sets Grossie’s apart from competitors? We are a small business and do not have a lot of overhead, so we can keep our prices competitive while still delivering quality products. n

Moon Shine Annual Tour Features Night-Lit Gardens in a Walk on the NightSide

F

riends of LSU’s Hilltop Arboretum encourage readers to pull out their sweaters, grab a flashlight and join fellow gardening enthusiasts on Sunday, November 13 for an interesting view of four fall landscapes. This year, Baton Rouge’s popular annual fall garden tour will, for the first time, feature night-lit gardens. This eclectic tour promises a variety of hidden gems including gardens in older neighborhoods as well as formal spaces on a quiet cul-de-sac. The outdoor lighting is a mix of the professionally designed and the owner created. There will be whimsical touches with tiny white lights and candles as well as the dramatic effects of up-lit majestic oaks. Coupled with the quieter, cooler environs, night lighting adds dimensions to the fall garden in the way of shadows and leafless forms. The four private gardens to be featured are previewed here and on the pages to follow.

Heart of a Garden

S

idney and Al Coffee have created what friends call a little bit of magic outside of their Garden District bungalow. The garden is one part courtyard with a high, organic fence that follows the contours of the yard and includes trees in its path. It’s also a secret garden where the grandchildren play make-believe under the arbors and along the slate paths. Finally, the deck functions as an outdoor dining area. For all that this garden is, its unexpected surprise is the free-standing, screened-in “Zen” room which doubles as an outdoor living space and meditation room. Mirrored garland hanging in the room’s vertical screened panels offers a sense of “aliveness” as it catches the sun in the morning and moonlight at night. Built by Al, the outdoor room is Sidney’s sacred space that seems miles removed from the street noises of Park Boulevard. “For us, it’s all about how it feels,” says Sidney. “And it’s straight from the heart.” This garden shows that special places can be created in the smallest of spaces. At night, it shines with up-lighting, candles and religious statuary peeking out from behind the plants.

An Evolving Landscape

T

he ever-evolving landscape of Sharon and Chris Werner has been a feature of Hilltop tours twice before as well as numerous magazines. The project began 21 years ago with Chris designing a pattern of paths and garden rooms around a collection of mature trees. The garden style is semi-formal with a mix of focal points, including a central pergola having six columns, seven fountains and numerous statues and garden elements. Two recent garden room additions include a Japanese garden with a tropical conservatory and a new greenhouse with a whimsical theme. A varied mix of plant materials is used with more structure in the center of the landscape, transitioning to a woodland feel around the perimeter. Lighting is used throughout the garden to accent focal points and illuminate spaces in creative ways. A wide variety of lights include floods, compact fluorescents, underwater lights, chandeliers, low-voltage fixtures, LEDs, solar, colored lights and candles. The landscape is a constantly changing work of garden art and horticulture with something new to experience with each passing season and year. 26 HOUSE and homE October 2011

or clients Katherine and Luke Kissam, designer Mary Wiley of Artistry of Lights has created a welcoming space in the formal gardens and courtyard of an iconic A. Hays Town home. Evenings here are warmly welcomed as the home, lush gardens and even the trees take on their evening personas. Guests are greeted by the large lighted trees that stand guard on the periphery, their large, spectacular limbs and trunks illuminated upwards and downwards with mercury lighting. The front porch steps and columns are flanked by sago palms and open on one side into a formal garden of boxwoods and Louisiana native roses. Through an archway awaits another formal garden with an old, textured cypress fence and stunning antique iron door. The lighted ivycovered wall is lined with Savannah hollies, a twinkling water fountain and glowing seasonal plantings and statuary. Beyond this garden, a tropical oasis of palms, crepe myrtles, banana plants and gingers envelop the unique saltwater swimming pool. An authentic Japanese lantern is nestled among the warmly lit trees and colorful plantings originally designed by Dr. Neil Odenwald. Strategically-placed accent lighting brings to life the archways, porches, patios and fountains, while low-voltage lighting highlights the home’s grand architecture and center fountain. 28 HOUSE and homE October 2011

wrap-around porch offers views of the front and side landscapes at Kent Richards’ longtime family residence, a place he has called home since the age of 16. While one side of the property fronts a busy street, a large pond with a central fountain gives the impression of a more rural setting, where live oaks, cypress and pine trees are abundant. The home’s front gardens are formal and enclosed, using boxwoods, low-growing Andora juniper and Carisssa holly around a circular drive and brick walkways. Larger shrubbery comes in the forms of softly sculpted azaleas and ligustrum. The back porch overlooks an outdoor kitchen area and a courtyard enclosed with a wooden fence, along which is planted a row Japanese Yew. Mary Wiley of Artistry of Light has installed lighting throughout the gardens, including the oaks and other trees as well as the pathways. n

rom the vivid colors of Spain to the vintage flair of France, notions of travel infuse the homes of Cheryl and Mike Thompson of Mike Thompson Homes in Lafayette. The Thompsons put their passions to work by including worldly aspects of style into the homes they build and decorate. Inside of a home on English Garden Parkway in Lafayette is a display of the Thompsons’ love for Italy—a place they’ve traveled to four times. In three bathrooms, they’ve showcased uniquely framed mirrors, ornate sconces and furniture-like cabinetry. The guest bathroom has a neutral color palette, featured in the cream walls and

A shapely mirror over the gold vessel sink adds unique detail to make this bathroom unforgettable. The home’s half bathroom offers more Italian style with its rose-colored walls and complementary vessel sink. A cream granite flecked with gold coordinates the bathroom’s bronze accessories—the mirror frame, wall sconce, towel handle and chandelier. “I always put a chandelier in the bathroom,” says Cheryl Thompson. “Especially in the bathroom that everyone’s going to see.” At 231 square feet, the master bathroom shares the same Italian styling in

during the mixing stage,” Virden explains. Traditional plaster is applied white and painted later, which could lose the effects of the work. “The rose ceiling is replicated from the plasters used throughout the South from days long gone. The plaster itself would have this look without the use of pigments.” The tub by Kohler features water jets, chromatherapy lighting and a heater. The shower has four body sprays and four rain heads with floor-to-ceiling marble in the form of one-inch mosaic tiles. The shower door is one piece of half-inch glass. “My favorite part of this room is the shower,” Virden says. “It’s just nice to look at.”

Among the extra features are a linen cabinet that doubles as storage for the home’s water heaters. Virden’s plan placed the toilet in a separate room for additional privacy. For the second or guest bathroom, the look is clean and elegant with a travertine tub surround and flooring. Complementary limestone surfaces the countertop. Mirrors in both bathrooms were purchased at Stoma’s in Lafayette, with lighting from Sunbelt Lighting in Baton Rouge. “The goal throughout the entire house,” says Virden, “was to give guests or family members the same opulence as the master, just on a smaller scale.” houseandhomemagazine.net 39

fresh, sleek spin on traditional materials was the request of clients for two new bath designs, and that’s exactly what they got from interior designer Becky R. Walker, ASID, of The Design Studio. To achieve her goals, Walker felt it necessary to use a combination of decorative styles. Borrowing inspiration from old Baton Rouge tradition and the architecture of A. Hays Town, a master and guest bath were updated with a new twist for a look that satisfies young and old. The updated bathrooms include travertine tile flooring with countertops and additional surfaces in granite and quartz. Crown moldings and walls with subtle texture offer added pop. Modern elements include an updated tub and shower with shiny new chrome faucets and fixtures.

Wide framed mirrors over the pair of vanities offer a look of tailored simplicity.

Bronze hardware and plumbing fixtures coordinate with dark-framed mirrors in this guest bathroom that maintains a light and bright esthetic.

“The simple design of the cabinetry is the perfect answer for a fresh, sleek traditional or transitional style,” Walker says. An eye-catching element in these two baths is the palette of grayish-blue walls and natural clay-inspired hues for the vanities. Most of the accessories, Walker says, were purchased from discount stores. “My recommendation in accessorizing is combining the finer items with more cost-effective accessories,” says Walker, 42 HOUSE and homE October 2011

The master bathroom includes a seamless shower door, large walk-in closets and self-contained water closets. “My favorite part about these bathrooms is combining existing styles to make new styles,” the designer says. “We had the ability to borrow from older and historic styles combined with new and fresh ideas for a unique, updated look.” n

[Intimate indoor Spaces]

n the months leading up to House and Home’s fourth annual Design Awards competition, interior designers and decorators, architects and space planners, and landscape architects and planners throughout the region were invited this spring to submit their stand-out projects for recognition within three issues of the magazine – July/August, September and October 2011. In our fourth year,

we were as surprised and delighted by the many excellent entries as we were in each of the previous years the competition was held. The creativity, innovation, complexity and innate talent that are evident in each entry made selecting the winners a difficult task. The award entries were divided into specific categories with several dozen categories having nominations. In this issue,

we present winners in the categories of “Intimate Indoor Spaces,” which include: Bathroom – Large, Bathroom Cabinetry/Vanity, Bathroom Surface, Master Bedroom – Small, Boy’s Bedroom, Nursery, Bedding (Custom), Window Treatment – Simple, Window Treatment – Complex and finally, the Top Design, a project that simply manages to top all others. Congratulations to all of the winners!

master bedroom - small Aimee Walker, IADA, RES Aimee Walker Interiors, LLC When a pair of clients fell in love with a wall color by Sherwin Williams named True Penny, they requested a newly-designed master bedroom around that bold selection. The idea to use blue accents as a complement came from the vivid colors in the couple’s favorite painting. Warm earth tones dominate the furnishings and draperies to balance the colors in a relaxing note. Business owners, the clients like to work on their laptops at night, so a loveseat at the foot of the bed accommodates computer or TV time. In one corner, an extremely comfy chaise doubles as a work area or quiet reading nook. The artwork above the chaise offers a view of New York and reminds the couple of their time spent on the East Coast. A large entertainment center houses the media equipment while adding lighted display space for family photos and decorative pieces. Storage and organization was a concern in this space, dictating a pair of matching high chests on opposite walls at each side of the bed. The window treatments are a combination of woven shades and fully functional and lined drapery for privacy and light control.

Bedding - Custom Window Treatment -ComplexKrystal West-Malone - Owner/Designer Styles in Textiles Designed from concept to completion for young Stella Malone, this nursery has a purpose in accommodating a baby while easily transitioning into child’s room in the years to come. The room’s color palette comes from the predominant pattern in the London shade and on the bumper pad. The mixed variety of colors and patterns provide an eclectic backdrop and facilitate accents of just about any color. A soft blue/green wall color with “Stella” mural in pink glitter creates a unique focal point. A few accents of black and white along with a crystal chandelier incorporate a bit of glam to the otherwise traditional bedroom. Personal touches include the tissue balls, which are actually tokens from Stella’s baby shower. Three-piece bumper pads are custom made to easily convert from baby to toddler. The two-tier dust ruffle is made from a solid blue and green pattern, constructed in a way to accommodate a future modification in green. At the room’s only window, a side-swooping drape creates the illusion of more space. When the drape is pulled over to one side, it offers a peek of the London shade underneath. houseandhomemagazine.net 47

Custom designed drapery panels are constructed from pink and white toile fabric with a ruffle in pink-and-white check. Green and pink check-covered buttons add finishing details along with green polka-dot sheers. All of the fabrics in this room are artfully coordinated, from the drapery and shade to the changing table and big-girl bedding that maintains the innocence of a baby’s nursery but grows with a young girl. Grounding the room is a rug with pink polka-dot border. The room’s crowning touch is a white metal chandelier with crystal accents.

Boy’s Bedroom Monique Breaux, Principal Designer Posh Exclusive Interiors How do you design a bedroom for a 13-year-old and his 3-year-old brother to share? How do you make that boys’ bedroom double as a guest bedroom that sleeps up to four? The designer answered with a space that feels like “a cool hotel suite” for the guest while still satisfying the needs of young boys who watch TV and play on the beds. Given the small and narrow space, the goal was to make the room appear and feel as large as possible. In so doing, a headboard spans one wall and groups the beds and center nightstand into a singular design. A neutral gray palette is punctuated by a red accent wall with a heavily textured finish, painted and burnished for a punch of color. A gray flannel headboard completes this combination boys’ bedroom and guest suite.

This indoor/outdoor remodeling and re-design project is strikingly seamless and well coordinated. A new outdoor kitchen and arbor for outdoor dining combine with a sleek new pool house and indoor kitchen with adjacent living/media room, all meshing harmoniously in cool shades of blue. Bahamian shutters were added to the arbor as well as the adjacent outdoor kitchen outfitted with custom stainless steel cabinets. Custom seat cushions and outdoor drapery dress up this outdoor dining venue, crowned with a modern capiz shell chandelier. A similar fixture is used indoors over the new kitchen island. There, a striking new kitchen design includes an artful backsplash of blue glass tiles and Alaska White granite countertops. This self-contained living space completes this fully functional guest house, carefully decorated in mid-century style with artistic details. The new esthetic includes stained beams, built-in cabinets and a fireplace integrated for practicality and newfound character. n

AUTUMN FAVORITES I

personally love soups of all types and in all seasons. Now that the temperature outside is giving way to pleasant cool breezes instead of stifling convection currents, some of us will be inspired to cook up a hearty pot of our favorite gumbo, chowder or bisque. One of my all-time favorite soups for fall and winter is Oyster & Brie Soup, a refined Louisiana classic. This soup is often made with crabmeat and sometimes even crawfish. Both variations have their merits, but for me the plump poached oyster with its briny liqueur is an exquisite partner for the velvety creaminess of fine brie. My advice always is to respect your ingredients by buying the best you can and you will be rewarded for the effort. Speaking of ingredients, a staple of every pantry is rice. With that, I present Sweet Potato Risotto. This is a recipe for a rice dish that is uncommon in these parts of the country, but it gains local relevance with the addition of Louisiana sweet potatoes. Arborio rice is a short-grain, starchy Italian rice used to make risotto. Risotto is cooked differently from regular rice and is meant to be eaten with a little “bite” to it, similar to al dente pasta. Refer to the recipe on page 60 for a side dish that is delicious and unique. Get creative, as risotto has infinite flavor possibilities. Every side dish needs a main course and, for this issue, I have chosen pork tenderloin as a focal point. Marinated, seared and slow roasted, the Orange 56 HOUSE and homE October 2011

& Herb Crusted Pork Tenderloin is a fabulous and relatively easy preparation that will have everyone asking just how you did it. A side sauce of Blackberry Port Wine Gastrique combines port wine and blackberries to take the pork to the next level and, with its sweet flavor and dense color, is a perfect choice for other meats like duck, lamb or venison. Like soup, bread pudding is a prevalent choice as the mercury drops. Plain, blueberry, white chocolate and cinnamon raisin flavors seem to be the ones we most often see on local menus. For this issue, I have taken an all-American holiday dessert, apple pie, and combined it with bread pudding for a new twist on our native favorite. Apple Pie & Sharp Cheddar Bread Pudding is finished with a warm brown sugar caramel and an unexpected slice of cheddar cheese. Yes, a nice strong sharp cheddar cheese works best. (I was exposed to the phenomenon of cheddar cheese melted in the form of a thick slab on my warm apple pie while on vacation in Niagara Falls over 20 years ago. At the time I was skeptical, but after my server assured me I would indeed love it, I had no choice but to give it a go. It was a transforming experience to realize what is possible when you combine good ingredients in an unlikely marriage.) In this fall menu, I hope you’ll discover something new and unexpected, much like I did. —Chef Michael Dardenne

In his “ own words ” Jeffery Matherne Surrounded by images of nostalgia, artist Jeffery Matherne finds inspiration in old, weathered pieces that harken back to simpler, happier times.

Melissa Oivanki

Jeffery Matherne Rustic and Nostalgic Art www.jefferymatherne.com “Morning Coffee” is 15” x 12” acrylic on wood

This “Sailfish” sculpture is a canvas sail stitched to a welded frame, Melissa Oivanki accented with acrylic paint.

CANVAS I’m from Baton Rouge, attended high school in East Baton Rouge Parish, graduated from Baker High School and am taking any and all art classes offered. I’ve continued my interest in art and design with Drafting and Commercial Art courses, which have provided me with handson design and layout experience.

PRIMER I always remember drawing and making crafts as a child. Being from a large family, I was always encouraged or “volunteered” by my sisters to take on arts and crafts such as decorations or school projects. 62 HOUSE and homE October 2011

MEDIA My style is decidedly folk art with rustic and nostalgic themes. My primary media is acrylic paint on found wood. My favorite is the look of old peeling painted wood. To prepare the surface, light sanding is needed. The final stage is to spray with a matte or satin sealer to protect the surface. I also recycle used canvases and apply textures with wood filler or spackle, then paint over the textured surface. GENRE I enjoy nature and, of course, Louisiana-inspired themes such as the ever popular fleur-de-lis, pelicans and crawfish, to name a few. Louisiana images small enough to use as Christmas ornaments are always favorites.

“Carousel” is 18” x 30” acrylic on bead board

INFLUENCE I always had an interest in old weathered signs I would see along Airline Highway and River Road between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. This is why I love to paint on old found boards and objects that give history to a piece. DOLLARS & CENTS I usually have several various sizes of art available. My work continues to reflect happier times and images that can fit many styles of home or office décor. I always encourage people to recycle old boards or unusual surfaces they may have lying around their homes or in storage. I am happy to create something custom from an idea others may have and work with them from concept to “Louisiana Favorites” is 16.5” x 18.5” acrylic on bead board finished product. SHOW I have shown my work at outdoor markets in Clinton and Denham Springs. The largest show I’ve attended is the Broadmoor Arts and Craft Show, held annually in Baton Rouge at Broadmoor High School the Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving. “Garden Path” is 18” x 30” acrylic on bead board

Photos this page Melissa Oivanki

AHEAD My goal as an artist is to continue to paint what inspires me, but to remain open to new ideas that best reflect a client’s taste and style. One goal is to create a mural or several themed pieces for someone’s home or business. I hope future demand for my work allows me to paint, paint and paint some more. n
