December Holiday Days “Now, Datsun! Now, Duster! Now, Pontiac and Viper! On, Corvette! On, Camaro! On, Cobra and Mustang!” Not the exact lyrics to that holiday song, but then again, it was composed by a Car Enthusiast. This holiday season is full of opportunities to pick that special gift for the auto enthusiast, and please No More “socks and ties”! A couple of great gift ideas that will go great and will be greatly celebrated would be a brand new 2014 Corvette Stingray or a 1967 Shelby, and why not a 1970 426 Hemi Cuda. A great wish list, right? Affordable? Yes! In Die Cast scale size. Hot Wheels, ERTL, Franklin Mint, Auto Art, Corgi are some of the many companies that make true to life, incredibly detailed toy collectable cars. Some of these limited edition cars can be an investment in the long run. For example, those little Hot Wheels that sold for under a dollar back in 1970, today, if you have certain cars still in their original blister pack, they can be worth a couple of thousand dollars. Collecting toy cars is just as big as collecting the real cars. Limited production runs on a toy car is a major thing. This means that a particular car is numbered and only a certain amount was done, making it very collectable and valuable. A place to purchase these cars is mostly by the internet or Ebay. By experience, I can tell you, giving one of these gifts, makes you the person that they will remember. This is priceless. Hopefully, my family reads this issue! Have a great Holiday Season. The Comfort Zone
If someone would ask me to describe the recent show at The Comfort Zone restaurant in 9 words or less, I would have to say: Beautiful Weather, Great Cars, Live Music, and Tasty Food! By 11:00 am when the show started, we had 47 cars on the field, which was the limit set by the Plaza so that we could leave room in the lot for the customers and visitors. Not only did we get to see a bunch of great cars, but we also had two (trophy winning) Low-Rider Bicycles entered in the show! Even Spiderman showed up in his Spidey Mobile to keep us safe. The Comfort Zone Restaurant treated each of the car drivers to a very nice lunch, prepared specially for them. ¶

On October 4th 2013, Rods & Classics USA had the pleasure of going to the first Falls Auto Show here in our town. We had the pleasure of meeting Phil and taking pictures of the models he had hosting the event. Phil was gracious to offer great music and drinks to visitors. The show featured beautiful classics, hot rods, and muscle cars, but the main attraction was a wood boat and a big red fire truck. Âś Specializing in: Classics, Antiques and Hot Rods. Headers Upclose & Personal The Header up close and personal for this month is Chris Robles owner of COR Wheels. Chris is one of the most talented and artistic entrepreneur in our community. COR Wheels manufactures and produces some of the most popular custom wheels in the world. Rods and Classics USA Magazine had the distinct pleasure to interview him recently.
When did you come to the realization that you are an important player in the industry? I am very humble, that has been instilled in our family. I guess I can say that moment came when we started making rims for other manufacturers.
Chris can you tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born in the Bronx, New York. My family moved to Miami when I was 13 years old. We lived in Hialeah.
What gives you the most satisfaction in your business? The fact that customers enjoy our product. We appreciate our customers. Without them, we are nothing. I follow up with them and it is rewarding to hear how satisfied they are with our rims.
How did you become interested in design? I come from a very artistic family. When I was going into high school, I applied to attend DASH the Design and Architecture Senior High Magnet School. This was not my first choice. All my friends were going to Hialeah High. At Dash, I received training in industrial design. In High School, I learned to put on paper my creativity. I am happy and fortunate that I attended and formed part of the first graduating class. What happened when you graduated from high school? After I graduated, I went to work in the automobile accessory business. I took special interest in the rims and tire industry. I learned a lot of how the automotiveaftermarket business works. When did you decide you wanted to start your own business? After working in the industry for so long, I thought that I could do better. I wanted to design my own wheels. So, my friend Robert Herrera and I began talking about starting a business. When did you actually decide to go on your own? In October 2005, Robert and I went into business together. We started COR Wheels. I handled the designing and he handled the business part. How was it in the early days of COR Wheels? In the beginning, I would sketch wheel designs on paper and we would send them to the machinist in California for production. Robert handled the sales and technical aspects of the business. It was an exciting time. We only had one employee and ourselves doing the work. How has the business improved? Now, we do all the designing and machine work in our shop. We have been very blessed. Our wheel designs have become very popular with the automobile community. We sell wheels all around the world. We currently have 18 employees and are looking to expand. As a matter of fact, we now manufacture wheels for other brands. Since we started we have produced over 40,000 wheel sets. What are some of your best wheel designs? Our best designs are the COR, AXIOM and BESPOKE. These are great looking wheels. What do you see in the future for COR Wheels? I am always looking for ways to improve our product. We look forward to have better machines and have faster production. We are also looking into starting our own rim color operation. Eventually we will do everything in house.
If you are looking to buy some great wheels to make your car look even better, we encourage you to see COR Wheels. They make some of the best looking wheel designs on the planet. COR Wheels is located at 2799 NW 82 Ave. Doral, FL 33122 phone. 305 477-5850

Premiums may vary subject to state and other specific situations. Premium based on a Florida vehicle valued at $40,000.00.
BY ART FERNANDEZ My story, as an automotive enthusiast, began at a very young age. You could say when I was learning how to crawl. Tonka Trucks and Hot Wheel toys were my favorites. As I got older, I learned to like other toys. Toy movie cars were my favorite for some time: the Knight Rider Trans-Am, the Batmobile, the Green Hornets Black Beauty, James Bond Aston Martin, Corvette Summer’s Stingray, and many others. After many years of owning over thirty actual sports cars, classics and muscle cars, I never gave up on the toy hobby. Vintage models and die cast cars are my current favorites. Patience is required when building a model kit car. It is very similar to restoring a real car, just at a smaller scale. Die cast model cars that come already assembled make great collectibles and some can increase in value. Not everyone can be like Jay Leno and have a real collection of every car on your wish list. So a great alternative is the toy cars. You can order a 1970 HEMI Cuda for $90 from E-bay vs the real one that goes for about $100K. You can be an enthusiast at any scale, while at the same time pass some story to your children. Most likely they will probably be future car enthusiast too. This Christmas, impress the car guy or gal in your home and give them a small scale version of their favorite car. Perhaps even a toy car of an actual car they once owned. They will like it more than a tie or a pair of socks! œ

The DeLorean DMC-12
By: George Fernandez The Delorean DMC-12 is best known for its debut in the 1986 movie “Back to the Future” starring Michael J. Fox. In the movie, the car was converted into a time machine by a wacky professor. Today you cannot pass by a DeLorean without snickering and looking for the flux capacitor inside the car. This is the story of the DeLorean DMC-12. It was John DeLorean’s long time dream to build his own car. Formerly with Pontiac Motor Division he was a gifted car engineer and executive for General Motors. One of his best known car works was on the Pontiac GTO. After obtaining Hollywood investors such as Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis Jr. and the British government, who was anxious to bring jobs to Northern Ireland with high unemployment, DeLorean finally was able to gather the necessary capital needed to start the company. In 1976, the first prototype was made and in 1981 the first production car came out of the factory. Though the car was being made in Europe, it was intended to be sold in the United States. The name DMC-12 was chosen because it was suppose to sell for $12,000. But, when it went to the dealers the price was more than $25,000. The DMC-12 was a revolutionary two seat sports car that featured a fiberglass underbody, stainless steel body panels, gull wing opening doors and a rear mounted V6 engine with 150 horse power. The body and suspension were based on the Lotus Espirt. It had four wheel independent suspension with telescopic shocks and double wishbone front suspension. The rear suspension was a multi-link setup. It also had rack and pinion steering and four wheel disc brakes. The combination produced a smooth ride and fine handling. The Peugeot V6 proved underpowered and overall performance was lackluster.
Troubles soon began for the DeLorean. In 1981, 7000 cars were shipped to the United States. Buyers were lining up and paying premium prices. But, once the car was purchased, the buyers began to find faults. Quality control was dismal. Performance was not as promised. Dealers almost had to rebuild the cars due to the factory defects. The word got quickly out to potential buyers. Out of the 7000 cars delivered only 3000 were sold. John DeLorean was accused by the British government for misuse of taxpayer money. He was later acquitted. DeLorean was then arrested in the United States and charged with 8 counts of drug trafficking. He was found not guilty in 1984. Despite his innocence his name had been tarnished. He could not save the car company. DeLorean produced 9200 DMC-12s until the car company went bankrupt in 1982, including three gold plated cars. Several “black cars” were also produce and used for training purposes only. The black cars had black plastic panels instead of stainless steel. All other cars had the stainless steel panels. The remaining parts and equipment were liquidated and shipped to the U.S. Ironically in 1984, Pontiac began producing a car similar in many respects to the DMC-12. The Pontiac Fiero did not have stainless steel panels, but it had new plastic composite panels on a space frame. The two seat sports car also had a mid engine design. Coincidence? DMC of Texas purchased the rights and name to the car. In 2007, they announced that they would be reproducing the DeLorean DMC-12 in low numbers. Production would be twenty cars per year. The cars would be 80% old parts and 20% all new parts. The old parts are the NOS parts purchased during the liquidation in 1982. The price starts at $57,500. A new all electric DMC-12 is scheduled to be built in 2013.¶
