THE PUERTO RICAN FOLKLORIC DANCE & CULTURAL CENTER (PRFDance) is the only cultural center in Texas and their four surrounding states affiliated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture for ongoing and authentic cultural programming that could not otherwise be experienced in this region. Founded by Dr. Ana María Tekina-eirú Maynard in 1997, the mission of their nonprofit is to promote cultural awareness and pride through performances, cultural events, and high-quality educational programs based in the folkloric performing arts -- dance, music, community theatre, and STEM education through cultural arts. The cultural center facility is home to Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance, their performing company of dancers, musicians, and juniors who perform throughout the year. While their programs are available to all, they target an under-served community with special focus on those whose access to cultural programming is limited by economics. Since 2001, their achievement and quality have been validated by repeat support by the National Endowment for the Arts, an NEA Chairman’s Award (2007), the Texas Commission on the Arts, the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and Humanities Texas (2011+).

Programs PRFDance has created a focal point in the Southwest U.S. for Puerto Rican culture. Trained by Island Masters, they are one of the few on the U.S. mainland with the expertise to accurately teach and perform the full cross-section of Puerto Rico’s cultural traditions, Bomba, Plena, Seis, Danza, and native Taino music and dance. They offer over 12 ongoing programs enjoyed by students and professionals in dance (folkloric and fusion), traditional music (percussion, strings, choir and ensemble), community theatre, history and cultural workshops from sports to crafts. Their programming includes both informal performances and mainstage productions that students of all ages, preschool through adult, can participate in. The original bilingual plays bring to light unsung heroes in Puerto Rican history; featuring live music, dance and acting, they give students of all ages a chance to develop multidisciplinary skills. The STEAM Education program -- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through Cultural Arts -- is a unique educational opportunity to learn electrical engineering concepts through lively Puerto Rican traditional dance. Since the opening of their permanent facility in 2006, educational offerings have expanded beyond performing arts to share culturally relevant traditions with our community. Cultural events include the annual dominoes tournament, traditional holiday celebrations like Octavitas, and the sharing of Puerto Rican sports traditions, from the ancient Taino ballgames of Batu to Baseball. Native Taino heritage holds its own spotlight through annual workshops that teach craftwork, history, and traditions, as well as an annual camping trip that flies a real Taino chief from Boriken’s Pueblo de Guatu Ma-cu to share outside the classroom traditions with their community. For more information: Dr. Ana María Tekina-eirú Maynard | Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Cultural Center | 701 Tillery Street #13, Austin, Texas 6

Since 1997, PRFDance has produced financiallysecure, artistically acclaimed programming, including the large, annual, Celebrando production ($35K/year) that has grown to be a heritage festival featuring Puerto Rican masters of traditional music and dance and authentic artisan handcrafts. Their three-dancer company which debuted in 1998 is now a 20-member, multi-generational folklore company of Dancers, Musicians, and Juniors who perform in the community throughout the year. They have had stable and healthy growth since their one danceclass inception, and today offer over 12 weekly programs for students and professionals in traditional music and dance, theatre, history, and culture. In operation since 2006, the permanent, multipurpose facility has provided a platform to experiment with a wide variety of cultural programming. It includes indoor and outdoor areas where free, near-monthly cultural events attract cultural tourism and give a resourcelimited community opportunities to participate in cultural traditions.

Community People are choosing to move to Austin to be near their hard-to-find cultural programs. They have built a community that welcomes all who seek a sense of cultural pride and positive role models, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, or economic or social background. They support family-togetherness and participation of seniors through multiple-generation opportunities to engage in pride instilling performances and events. Volunteers develop real-world skills in teaching, business, and computerbased applications, while building self-esteem and leadership skills. Talented youth develop advanced skills through company apprenticeship, student-teaching, and program leadership. Music and dance is a very important part of Puerto Rican culture. Named by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture as the cultural Ambassador for Puerto Rico in Texas and the Southwest, they are proud to share their rich traditions with the community, and hand down their cultural heritage to the next generation!

Natalie Sisneros

NATALIE CATARINA SISNEROS celebrated her Quinceañera on November 2, 2013. It was wrapped in the magic and grandeur of a magnificent masquerade celebration. Presented by her parents Jesse and Connie Sisneros, Natalie took the highly anticipated step from young girl to young lady. Father Tom Chamberlain, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple celebrated Mass as Mariachi Ilusión played in the background. Filled with family and tradition the evening stirred with masked youths that served as Natalie’s court. They traveled in style from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Temple to the reception being held at the Expo Center in Belton, Texas aboard a Hummer stretch limo.

Castañeda, Yecenia Flores escorted by Manuel Rojas, Kyrie Bergstrom escorted by Jacob Eubanks, Bryanna Navarro escorted by Robert Torres, and Priscilla Retana escorted by R.J. Fuentes. The court surprised the crowd with a fast beat cumbia by the Kumbia Kings called Baila Esta Cumbia which left everyone’s foot tapping in the hall. The Grammynominated band, Grupo Atrapado, played into the night with their own mix of grupero, norteñas and cumbias. Natalie’s Last Doll was embroidered with the date of her Quiceañera and was a stunning replica of Natalie and her dress. Her cake was a tiered white and strawberry flavored masquerade themed confection that was sprinkled with pearl embellishments and crowned with a hand-painted Italian mask as a cake topper.

Homestyle BBQ brisket and sausage plates were served with homemade potato salad, charro beans and all of the trimmings. The hall was beautifully decorated by La Lee’s Bridal, Taylor, Texas. Natalie extends a special shout out to her parents, Jesse and Connie Sisneros and both sets of grandparents, Jesse and Socorro Retana and Jesse and Mary Sisneros as well as uncles and aunts: Fernado and Rosemary Berumen, who are also Natalie’s Godparents, Gloria Retana, Jesse and Erika Retana, Adrian and Laura Lopez and to the sponsors who helped make the event possible.

Receiving an invitation to a wedding or another party in the mail can be an exciting prospect, presenting a chance to enjoy a night out and share several hours in the company of friends and family. Upon opening the invite, you may find the words “black tie.” If you have never attended a black tie event, you may be unsure what that entails and how to prepare. The appearance of “black tie” on an invitation means the party hosts are planning a formal affair and they’d like their guests to dress appropriately. For men, this dress code is unequivocally a black tuxedo. Gentleman who want to dress in the spirit of the occasion should purchase a tuxedo or rent one if finances do not allow for the purchase. Accompanying the tuxedo is a bow tie. Now is not the time to don a clip-on. Only a hand-tied bow tie will suffice. Additionally, men are expected to be conservative with their choice of tuxedo shirt. A white shirt is customary. It may have ribbing or a subtle detail. If a cummerbund or vest is worn, it should also be black. However, sometimes matching the vest or cummerbund to a date’s dress is acceptable. Party hosts who request formal attire are trying to keep a uniform look to their party and avoid any conflicts that could arise with lax dress code requirements. If a host or hostess has specified a dress code, it is in proper form to stick to the requirements or decline the invitation. If you are ever in doubt about what to wear, you can always ask your hosts what is expected of you.

Enhance Your Beauty Many women are on an eternal quest to enhance their beauty, spending thousands of dollars each year on cosmetics or hair care products to emulate the pictures they see in leading beauty magazines. Studies going back to 1995 have determined that it can take only a few minutes of looking at a beauty magazine to cause most women to feel depressed, guilty and shameful. In the 1980s, models weighed about eight percent less than the average woman. But today’s models weigh 25 percent less on average, establishing a standard that many women cannot meet without sacrificing their health. But models and celebrities have entire teams devoted to making them look attractive, sometimes spending hours receiving cosmetic applications from stylists and makeup artists. Women struggling to live up to unrealistic standards can look beyond many makeup and cosmetic fixes to bring out their beauty. There are many different strategies that have stood the test of time: * Confidence * Skin care * Good posture * Diet * Healthy hair * Lifestyle

Smackola has been building fan base of Wormheadz over the years from local to international recognition reaching Japan, France, United Kingdom and Russia. “I can’t wait to go tear the stage down in those countries, I just want to see their faces.” He just completed a tour in Canada, “It feels good know that my music has reached so many people and places I’ve never been to, I’m an independent artist, not backed by a major label, distribution company or any major corporations’, basically I’m a one man company from shooting and editing my own music videos, to writing and producing my records, in this business you have to wear many hats, I don’t like to work like this I do it because it has to get done, but I love it, its my vision I’m being me 100,000%.” - Smackola Smackola suffered a major loss in February of 2013 when his mother Elizabeth Brooks AKA Momma Worm, passed away, “I love my Mom, my mother and music have always been number one, I miss her very much she was everything to me, she was my hero, my no 1 fan and business partner. She always told me no one can see your dream but you, never give up and go all the way. My mother was a cancer survivor and she struggled with diabetes, I moved my Mom to Texas to take care of her and was with her every day, I will cherish those two years that we got and a lifetime of memories and so now that I’ve come this far, but couldn’t have done it without her, everyday it’s a struggle but I just think of her beautiful smile and how proud she was of me, she believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself. So everything I do now will always be in her memory.” dirtywormz.com | facebook/smackoladwz instagram/dirtywormz | twitter/therealsmackola
