“Happy New Gear” You know what I mean. As we start the New Year, there is excitement, especially, in the automotive world. New models, new facelifts, and new technologies are finding their way into new homes. November and December were the months to see what is new in the automotive world. If you attended the 43rd annual Miami International Auto Show, you saw up close the new vehicles that are going to be available. You could go inside of some of the new cars. The new redesigned Chevy Corvette Stingray was one of them and there were several hundred others. Another huge event was the SEMA Show. New technologies in the aftermarket, custom, and prototype world made their debut. Radical car builds come together, as well as, new products from the automotive industry. Our magazine traveled to Las Vegas to cover this magnificent show. I hope you enjoy the spectacular photos we brought back to share with you. Whatever your car passion, Rods & Classics USA magazine wishes you an enthusiastic automoting year. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014.

The 2013 Downtown Car Show was sponsored by the Neighborhood Ministry at First Fort Lauderdale. Through a strategic partnership with James Wright, President of the Fort Lauderdale Region Antique Automobile Club of America, they were able to organize a fantastic show in Downtown Fort Lauderdale that could foster a sense of community. They look forward to making this an annual event, which we hear they plan to go bigger next year. Âś

Gathering of the Giants
By Al Torres. I was approached by a long time friend Ceasar Morales owner of A Thousand Virgins Tattoo Studio, and asked if I would help put together the First Annual Tattoo/Car Show here in Miami, FL. It would consist of artist, tattoos and cars. Being an automotive enthusiast myself and owner of a few low riders, as they too are rolling art canvases on wheels, I made a few calls to Miami’s top low-rider car clubs such as USO, 25th Street Riders, Low Lyfe, Goodtime, Majestics, Yarils Customs, and Bowtie Connection. No one hesitated at the opportunity to show off their cars. Also included were custom motorcycles by Cartel Baggers.

We wanted the show to have a West coast look and feel, therefore, all cars and motorcycles had to be rolling on spokes (wire wheels), white walls, lowered, bagged, or with hydraulic suspension. There were radical paintjobs and multicolor to choose from. Enough eye candy to pleasure anyone’s automotive itch. In the center of it all was a masterpiece known as ”Certified Gangster” that is owned by “Large” and built by Bowtie Connection Miami. This is a 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS. This is the only vehicle built to this caliber in the state of Florida that is why it was the icing on the cake or should I say show. The show was a success and thanks to all that made it happen. ¶

Garage-Industry Innovations Center Each year the SEMA New Products Showcase is filled with thousands of the most cutting edge tools and accessories designed to add enjoyment to vehicle ownership. While some have universal fitments, many have model-specific applications that require significantly more research and development. That is why SEMA created the SEMA Garage.
The SEMA Garage gives SEMA Member businesses access to the special high-tech tools and equipment they need to get their products -- whether a $10 set of replacement wiper blades or a $10,000 engine modification -- off the drawing board and into customer hands. It is the only known facility of its kind in the U.S.
is a fully certified Executive Order (EO) aftermarketpart certification lab. Any company wishing to sell aftermarket powertrain parts in the very lucrative California market must get an EO certification. Working in conjunction with the Auto Club, SEMA is able to provide its members with this valuable, low-cost resource for testing and obtaining such certifications. This temperature controlled test cell can simulate winter in the mountains, summer in the desert or anything in between. Testing meets all federal EPA and California Air Resources Boards (CARB) standards. Capabilities include emissions, fuel economy, acceleration, brake stopping distance, interior/exterior noise levels and handling.
The SEMA Garage-Industry Innovations Center has a display at the SEMA Show, Booth 50000, located in the South Hall upper level of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Mike Spagnola, SEMA VP of the Product Development Center, is on hand to answer questions.
“SEMA is in a unique position to provide members with a reliable and affordable way to develop and test their products, thereby helping them get their products to market quickly,” said Mike Spagnola, SEMA VP of the Product Development Center.
But by far the most valuable asset in the SEMA Garage
Source Sema Show Press Release Nov 8, 2013
Covering 15,000 square feet and filled with nearly $2 million of equipment, the SEMA Garage now includes all the tools specialty product developers could hope for and then some, including two vehicle lifts, a portable coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for 3D scanning, a 3D printer for fast prototyping, digital race car scales for the most precise vehicle weight measurements, a dynamometer for power output measurements and more.
The SEMA Garage originally opened May 9, 2013 when the aftermarket-part certification lab was first made available to members. Today’s expansion marks the second phase of the organization’s ongoing effort to better serve the industry. In the coming months, a suite of marketing support tools will be added to complete the three-phase opening, in the form of a media center complete with a photo cove, photography center and media coordination services.

Nostalgia
Playboy Motor Co.
Right after World War II, the soldiers were returning from overseas. The automobile industry began retooling the factories to build cars again. Americans were yearning for new cars. Peace time had finally come after six years of war. Car builders and investors saw their chance to create something new. Three friends got together and thought they had the right idea for a car. Louis Horwitz, a Packard dealer, Charles D. Thomas, a Pontiac engineer, and Norman Richardson, a talented mechanic, saw a need in the car market. Their car would: • • • • • •
Sell for under $1000 dollars Be compact, two door and economical Have a 4 cylinder 40 horse power engine Seat three passengers Have a retractable convertible hardtop roof Most likely be used as an around-the-town second car
In 1947, the friends set out on their venture and started the Playboy Car Company in Buffalo, N.Y. They began with mass advertising with hopes of gaining public interest. By 1948, a total of 97 prototype cars were built. These cars were shipped around the country in a publicity run. Their hopes hung on obtaining new investors in the car company. But, the interest just wasn’t there. The scandals from the Tucker cars made investors skeptical of investing in a new car company. A deal with Henry Kaiser and other potential investors fell through. They could not maintain the company without the necessary capital. In June 1949, the company went bankrupt. All the cars and company assets were sold at auction. By 1964, Donald Moore, a car collector from Massachusetts, purchased the remaining parts. Of the 97 cars built, none were ever sold to the public. Today, there are only 45 that still exist and 15 that are still on the road. Only 5 have the optional windshield mounted spotlight. If you are wondering, Hugh Hefner the owner of Playboy Magazine, got the name for his magazine from the ill-fated Playboy Car Company. Michael Cohen’s Playboy
Michael is currently working to get the car back on the road again. It is tedious work looking for parts for a car that is no longer made. However, luckily, some of the parts used to build the Playboy came from other car manufactures such as Ford, Chevrolet and Buick. The motor is a four cylinder flat head built by Hercules. The tail light bezels were from a 1930 Chevy Special Deluxe, the dash bezels were from a 1942 Studebaker truck, and the door handles were from a Ford Model A Straight Window Coupe. According to Mr. Cohen, there were many innovations when the Playboy Car was built. Some of these innovations were: • • • • • •
Independent four wheel suspension Slab side design for aerodynamics Four wheel hydraulic brakes Retractable hard top roof Warner three speed synchromesh manual transmission with column shift Single Carter carburetor
The Playboy is an unusual car and should look great when Micheal Cohen puts it on the road again. We can’t wait to see it driving down the street or at a car show. Good luck Michael!
In a recent interview with Rods & Classics USA magazine, Michael Cohen, a car enthusiast, told us about his 1948 Playboy. Michael said, “I have always liked cars with retractable roofs. I had heard of the Playboy car, but had only seen them in pictures. When a friend told me there was one available, I just had to go see it. I fell in love with it when I saw it.” He ended up buying the car and took it home to his garage. The red and white Playboy was complete. It just needed restoration and plenty of TLC.

PHATZO CA
At Dynamic Turbo, we go as crazy as our customers want us to. For example, a good friend and customer, Tim, brought us his one of a kind Camaro SS. His Camaro had a wide body done by TS Design in California for Forgiato wheels to be showcased at a few show, like Forgiatofest. The car was very unique in looks, but Tim had other plans in mind. Tim wanted this car to look crazy and to be crazy fast. He brought his Camaro to Dynamic Turbo so that we could work our magic on it. Before we started working on the engine, the car only had 24” Forgiato wheels with a massive lip and the wide body. The wide body is 6” wider on each side then the regular Camaro. The plan for the car was simple: add more horsepower. What better way of adding horsepower than adding a custom twin-turbo kit? For the build, we used Twin Garret Ballistic Ball Bearings GT35 Turbos with custom billet compressor wheels. These turbos are capable of achieving well over 1300 horsepower with a full transmission and engine build. To sustain that power, we would also need to redo the drive-shaft and axles. Along with the turbos, we added Pfadt Coilovers, sway bars, endlinks, control arms, and upgraded brakes. For the brakes, we installed the AP Racing big brake kit which features one of the biggest brakes in the market. The brake kit comes with 16” rotors to sustain the extra power for the safety of the vehicle and driver. After the build, the car ended up making 650 horsepower on 5lbs of boost. Any more boost would be dangerous without working on the internals of the car. The owner, Tim, is a very social car enthusiast. He likes to go to as many car events as he can. After having his Camaro delivered to his house in Canada, he has taken it to many car shows and has won many awards with the car. The Camaro is definitely a head turner, like most of the cars in his collection. Tim’s collection contains everything from classic muscle cars to two chrome Nissan GTR’s. Tim is very happy with the outcome of his Camaro, and we are always happy when our customers are satisfied with our work. The photos taken of the car were taken by a local and well known photographer, William Stern. ¶

Headers Up-close & Personal Ayanidys Martinez Marante Our personality for this month is Ayanidys Martinez Marante, president of Muscle Stangs of Miami. Ayaidys is one of the most personable and involved people in the car enthusiast community. Some may say she is the main force behind the Muscle Stangs Club. She is also the only woman president of a car club in South Florida. Rods & Classics USA had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Ayanidys and this is what she had to say: Ayanidys, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I was born in Cuba. My family moved to Miami when I was three years old. I grew up in Miami and attended local public schools. I graduated from Miami Senior High School Class of 1994. You can say, I’m a true “Stingaree”. I am also the proud mom of two beautiful children, Jailenes and Jesus. My family are all Mustang fanatics. I have owned twenty Mustangs in my life time. I love the styling and performance of the car. What is your favorite Mustang? My favorite Mustang is the Elinor. That is my dream car. I hope to own one some day. Continues on page 24

continued from page 23
How did you get involved with Muscle Stangs? I wanted to start my own Mustang Club. But, as fate has it. I met two guys, Luis and Andy. They already had Muscle Stangs running. So, in June 2009, I joined the Club, and learned the ins-and-outs of running a car club from them. I was very enthusiastic about the Club. We had 75 members and they were all great! When did you become Club president? In 2011, Luis had some personal problems. He asked me to take over the Club. What has been your best accomplishment as president? My best accomplishment is getting a (MCA) Mustang Club of America Chapter in our Club. It was something that we always wanted to do. We did it after being Club president for six months. What are some things that make Muscle Stangs stand out? We are very family oriented and community minded. The member are all very supportive to one another. We also enjoy giving back to the community. We participate in fundraisers for many non-profit organizations. How does your family get involve in Club activities? My family is great! My daughter Jailene is the photographer. She is in-charge of taking pictures at all our events. The pictures are then posted on the Club’s web page. My son Jesus is an all-around kid. He helps out with anything that needs to get done. They are both Mustang car lovers. Do you have Club meetings? Yes, we meet the first Saturday of the month. What kind of activities does Muscle Stangs do? Along with our non-profit events we also plan weekend events for the members. We participate in many car shows throughout South Florida as well. Which is your favorite activity with the Club? My favorite activity is organizing car shows. Rods & Classics USA would like to thank Ayanidys Martinez Marante for her dedication and enthusiasm, not only to Muscle Stangs of Miami but, also to the car enthusiast community at large. If you are a Mustang enthusiast and are looking to join a like minded group of men and women please contact Muscle Stangs of Miami or see their web page at: www.musclestangsofmiami.com
