This year we are particularly excited to celebrate 121 years of history by proclaiming …
Battle of Flowers...where Fiesta began! ` The Bishop of Geneva, Saint Francis de Sales said “bloom where you are planted” and I can safely say that our ladies in yellow have taken that to heart. From that spring day in April 1891, what started out with a flower parade has blossomed into several events focused on showcasing students in middle school, high school and college. Our educational outreach includes an Oratorical Contest open to college students, an Essay Contest for middle school students and a Band Festival Program Cover Art Contest for high school students. These events held prior to Fiesta are designed to encourage study and pride in Texas. We also sponsor the Battle of Flowers Band Festival as a festive way to showcase and honor local and visiting high schools. Since 1936 the Association has produced this family entertainment venue on the Thursday night of Fiesta. Individual and massed marching bands perform beautiful and stirring musical offerings. The evening concludes with a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky over our city. Each year we remember that in 1891 a group of
women organized and staged the first Battle of Flowers Parade to honor Texas independence. Since then we have continued the tradition on the Friday of Fiesta to celebrate the diversity and heritage of all peoples of our great state. Our parade is the culmination of countless volunteer hours each year and is still run entirely by women. It remains a cornerstone of Fiesta. We take the continuation of this tradition seriously and are resolved to continue our efforts toward its success. By joining us today you are a part of this Fiesta tradition! Viva Battle of Flowers ….Where Fiesta Began!

Help us keep Parade route clean & green Commission, we helped initiate a program to Welcome to the Battle of Flowers parade. We esta help cut down on the amount of trash collected and
are so pleased to have you as our guests. Our parade theme this year, “Where Fiesta Began” refers to the fact that in 1891 a small group of women came together to stage a parade honoring the memory of the fallen heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Fresh flowers were tossed at parade participants and onlookers from horsedrawn carriages. Since then, Fiesta has grown into a huge celebration incorporating over 100 events in 11 days. Unfortunately with that growth has come the problem of trash disposal. Being the founding event of Fiesta, we take this problem seriously. So last year, with the help of the City of San Antonio and the Fi-
increase the amount recycled. We have proudly accepted the city’s highest honor, the “Verde Award,” for the last two years. As a result of our recycling efforts, and promotion of a “Pack it in, Pack it out” mentality, we have reduced the amount of trash going into the landfill by approximately 18 tons. Please join us in our efforts to Keep San Antonio beautiful and be on the lookout for yellow mesh bags for disposal of recyclables and either dispose of trash properly or “pack it out.” Thank you in advance for your participation. Essay Contest The Battle of Flowers® Association introduced its Essay Contest for seventh graders in 1995. The goal is to encourage students to enrich their knowledge of Texas history while developing their research and writing skills. This year’s theme required students to focus on the importance of cattle to Texas. Julia Wool, a student at St. George’s Episcopal School, won this year’s contest with her essay, reproduced at right, on the Chisholm Trail. Above at right, Sam Berryman, a student at San Antonio Academy, won second place, while third place went to Lindsey-Hall Schwegmann, a seventh-grader at Our Lady of Perpetual Hope in Selma. They are pictured with Janet Putman, the 2012 chairman of the Battle of Flowers® Association’s Essay Contest.

The Trail Drives of Texas - The Chisholm Trail By Julia Wool For the city dwellers in the east, Texas was the ideal source of beef. Jesse Chisholm, a Scot-Cherokee fur trader, blazed the perfect trail to get the beef to the east. This trail, known as the Chisholm Trail, was 800 miles long. With a surplus of cattle, Texas ranchers were eager to find new and distant markets to sell their beef. By 1860’s, there were nearly 300 million head of cattle in Texas. Railroads were few and far between in Texas, so ranchers had an enormous task ahead of them if they wanted to transport cattle. The solution seemed to be to drive the cattle to an area where railroad construction was well established. Kansas seemed to meet the cattlemen’s needs the best, as it had many railroads. Joseph McCoy, a cattle buyer and entrepreneur, realized Abilene’s railroad access could connect Texas longhorns to the north and the east. McCoy constructed a stockyard in Abilene, Kansas, that was able to hold 1,000 cattle. He advertised his stockyard to the ranchers in Texas to draw their business to Kansas. Thus the Chisholm Trail was born. The Civil War had ended, the nation needed beef, and by golly Texas was ready and now able to supply it. In 1867, the Chisholm Trail made it possible for almost 40,000 cattle to be transported into Kansas. Success of the trail was measured the following year by nearly doubling that number. Success was earned the old fashioned was, through lots of hard work. The Chisholm Trail was an 800 mile trip from San Antonio, Texas to Abilene, Kansas. Driving a
herd of cattle for that distance required many long hours of hard work. Dangers, such as stampedes, threatened the cowboys as they worked. In order to prepare for a trail drive, a rancher would initially hire a trail boss who would in turn hire the rest of the team. The trail boss was also responsible for planning the drive. The team and cattle would travel up to 30 miles each day for the first few days of the drive north. When the cattle were broken into the routine of the trail drive, the pace was brought down to about 10 miles a day. Usually, 2000 to 3000 cattle would hit the trail at any given time. In later years, this led to over-crowding on the trail. Part of the success of the Chisholm Trail was due to the fact that the cattle that traversed it were longhorns. This hardy breed could travel great distances with minimal water, being guided by a great sense of smell for finding food and water. By 1873, in spite of the measurable successes of the Chisholm Trail, the heyday of trail driving was nearing its end. Railroad construction was reaching farther into Texas. With railroad transportation nearby, long trail rides were no longer required. The northern plains had many more cattle ranches springing up and Texas beef was no longer in great demand. During their time, the hard driving cowboys of the Chisholm Trail made an enormous impact not only on Texas, but the country, too. At the end of the Civil War the cattle drives brought work and money to the devastated post-war economy of Texas. The trail drives also brought Texas beef to the people of the northern and eastern parts of a country struggling to reconnect. Hard work, good ideas, and a willing spirit made the Chisholm Trail a success.
