The Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau.
Your first stop? The Chamber & Visitor’s Bureau he Dripping Springs Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau is your first stop when visiting Dripping Springs or the surrounding areas. The chamber has a renewed mission and a new location. Sherrie Parks, executive director for the chamber of commerce, said it will be easier for people to find the organization. “It makes it easier to work with the city,” Parks said about the chamber’s new location. “It also makes it easier for people to find us because half the time they come here looking for city hall or they go to city hall looking for us.” Parks said Mercer Street is a great location for the chamber since the city received a grant for the Mercer Street Pedestrian Improvement Project. She said the new location will help promote businesses. “In the next year the city is going use the grant it received to revitalize Mercer Street,” Parks said. “The revitalization of that street is going to be very big for Dripping Springs and will help us draw tourists here.” Parks said one of the main goals for the chamber is making it a place everyone can find information. “I think the main goal is to rebrand the chamber as a place everybody can go to get the information they need,” Parks said. “Whether you live here or whether you’re visiting here. We’ve got to present Dripping Springs well.” Whether visiting the many nearby attractions like the iconic Hamilton Pool Preserve, or the stunning grotto at Westcave Preserve, the charm of Reimers Ranch Park, or the stark beauty of Pedernales Falls State Park, the chamber and visitor’s bureau is the place to get started. Dripping Springs offers an array of fine eateries with a wide variety of cuisines and the chamber can direct visitors quickly and easily to their destination. Let the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau assist you when visiting the area. ripping Springs boasts one of the finest school districts in Texas, an. award-winning public schools system. Covering approximately 190 square miles, the Dripping Springs Independent School District (DSISD) extends from Cedar Valley to Henley and from Hamilton Pool to 8 miles south on Ranch Road 12. Dripping Springs ISD has a proud tradition of educational excellence. It is a growing 4A school district with an enrollment of 4,500 students on five campuses: Dripping Springs Elementary School, Walnut Springs Elementary School, Rooster Springs Elementary School, Dripping Springs Middle School and Dripping Springs High School. DSISD repeatedly earns high marks for its academic and extracurricular programs, as well as for its fiscal accountability. In the 2010-11 Texas state accountability ratings, all three elementary schools — Dripping Springs Elementary, Rooster Springs Elementary, Walnut Springs Elementary — received the highest possible designation of Exemplary, while the high school, middle school and district were Recognized. Only 14.4 percent of campuses statewide were Exemplary. The district is one of 367 public school districts in the nation to be honored by the College Board with a place on its second annual “AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Roll.” DSISD is one of only seven school districts in Texas and the only district in the Austin area to be recognized on the AP Honor Roll, and is the only school district in the state of Texas to receive this award both years it has been presented. The district’s reputation for high levels of student achievement has created a college-going culture — approximately 95 percent of its graduates annually enter higher education. Dripping Springs High School students also consistently outperform their peers statewide on both the ACT and SAT college entrance exams.
Dripping Springs High School was recognized as one of the top high schools in Central Texas by the organization Children at Risk, ranking sixth in the spring of 2011.
Dripping Springs High School was recognized by Newsweek magazine as one of the top high schools in the United States in June 2011. DSHS was listed at #361 in the nation and #31 in Texas. When looking at only 4A comprehensive high schools, Dripping Springs is fourth in the state. DSISD offers Advanced Placement, Pre-AP, dual credit classes and career and technology programming. While student academics are the main focus of the school system, DSISD offers a full range of extracurricular activities, including competitive athletics, fine arts and literary teams. Success in extracurricular activities also is a Tiger trademark. DSHS athletes and teams frequently earn district titles and qualify for state meets, most recently in swimming. In recent years, many student-athletes have received college scholarships to continue their athletic pursuits.
Student involvement in groups like 4H and Future Farmers of America honors the roots of our community, and students have achieved great success in local stock show competitions. Students also participate and excel in the arts, which are showcased at the high school in the new 660-seat auditorium. Dripping Springs ISD has been recognized for its fiscal integrity many times, recognized by the Texas Comptroller’s Office as having the highest rating (“five stars”) for efficiency in spending while attaining high levels of student achievement. DSISD also has received a Superior rating every year that the state has issued a Financial Integrity Rating System report (FIRST). Dripping Springs traditionally has a high level of parental involvement. Along with a caring and competent faculty, a strong home-school partnership exists in the community. L
ooking for nice shady picnic spot, or a place to camp, fish or swim? Pay a visit to Camp Ben McCulloch, the only continuously used Confederate campground in the South. It is only a short drive from Dripping Springs, near the small town of Driftwood. Confederate veterans founded the 40-acre campground in 1896. It is maintained by Hays County residents descended from Confederate veterans. Despite the link to the Old South, the camp and its operators are not political. Anyone and everyone are welcome to use the facility and attend the annual Camp Ben McCulloch Reunion each June. “It is a beautiful park,” said Jimmy Robinson, who said he frequents the park. “There are nice amenities and some beautiful trees. This is a great stretch along Onion Creek.” The campground is open to the public 24 hours a day. There is no charge for day use, but a fee is collected for overnight camping. Most campsites are primitive. Electricity and
water are available for RVs and campers. Campsites are occupied by members during the annual reunion in June, but for the rest of the year they are available to the public. A caretaker is available to accept camping fees and take reservations. Call ahead, (512) 858-2084 or 858-7512, if you plan to use the pavilion, tabernacle or dance floor. These are often reserved on weekends. Primitive campsites usually are not reserved.
The campground has a half-mile of Onion Creek frontage, and there are several spots that make good swimming holes when rainfall is sufficient. To get to Camp Ben McCulloch, head south from Dripping Springs on Ranch Road 12, turn left on F.M. 150 toward Driftwood, left again on Ranch Road 1826. The campground is on the right, across from the Salt Lick restaurant.

The startling beauty of Hamilton Pool Preserve he Bible says that God rested on the Seventh Day... Those of us in the terestrial world wouldn’t be surprised if he did so at the iconic Hamilton Pool Preserve. The stunning beauty of Hamilton Pool has made it one of the most popular destinations in Central Texas. More than 70,000 people visit Hamilton Pool each year. The main attraction is the swimming hole, but there is also a trail leading to the Pedernales River. Hamilton Pool is a great place to swim; however, the park is first and foremost a nature preserve that is filled with various plants that are rare or endangered. Because of the delicate ecosystem, water samples are tested daily for bacteria. If the count becomes too high, swimming is not allowed, although the rest of the park remains open during regular operating hours. The reserve is a feast for the eyes and a great place for photography — you can walk into the grotto behind the waterfall. There’s also plenty of wildlife. Travis County operates Hamilton Pool Reserve. The reserve is part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve system, designed to protect endangered geological features, plants and animals.
10 2012 Guide to Dripping Springs, Texas
Situated on 232 acres of prime Hill Country land, the reserve is home to several rare plant species as well, including the threatened canyon mock orange, the chatterbox orchid, and the eastern red bay. (The University of Texas Botany Department has been especially interested in the red bay, because it’s far west of where it should be.) There are also many species of birds, including the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. Hamilton Pool is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. year round. The park does not allow pets, glass containers or cooking fires. Fishing is not allowed. The reserve closes to additional visitors temporarily when the parking lot reaches capacity. Hamilton Pool becomes quite popular during the summer — so if that’s when you’d like to visit, plan to arrive early in the day. To get there from Dripping Springs, drive north on Ranch Rd. 12 for about 7.4 miles, turn left on Hamilton Pool Rd. and drive about five miles. Westcave Preserve is on the right. Nominal charges are required, but include discounts for senior citizens and children. For information about the park, including whether or not swimming is allowed, call (512) 264-2740 for a recorded message. The greeting is updated almost daily.

njoy a great selection of locally grown foods and quality products at the Dripping Springs Farmers Market, which is now held every Thursday. Marianne Simmons serves on the farmers market’s volunteer board said the date changed from Saturdays to Thursdays will provide additional opportunities for more vendors to participate. “It’s real beneficial to hold two markets a week especially in the summer when you have perishable things like squash, cucumbers and tomatoes,” Simmons said. “In other words, you’ll pick everything for your Saturday market then you’ll have that same amount again on Tuesday.” This is the fourth season for the Farmer’s Market. Marketing Manager Joe Ann Touchstone said the Thursday market will ensure that the vendors are not competing with the larger Saturday markets in the Austin region. “It will also allow for families to do more meal planning by shopping earlier in the week,” Touchstone said. “With a mixed offering of vegetables, eggs, meats, herbs, breads, prepared foods and handcrafted items, the Dripping Springs Farmer’s Market promises to dazzle your senses.” The farmers market will also have two seasons this year. The first will

last from mid-March to the end of July, and the second will be from the first weekend of October through the third week in December. “This is a vehicle for preserving and enhancing agriculture in a community that seems to be changing so fast,” Simmons said. “It is a way for us to cherish these producers and eat really, really well.” The farmers market in Dripping Springs’ mission is to promote regional agriculture by providing products to consumers that comes directly from local growers.

Westcave Preserve: Mother Nature’s little secret W
hen you come down the hill and are first confronted by Westcave Preserve, don’t be surprised if the soft whisper of “wow” doesn’t flow naturally from your lips. The dominant feature of the preserve is the limestone canyon that leads to a hidden grotto and waterfall. The canyon was formed when a limestone cave collapsed, thousands of years ago. To help protect the formation from wear and tear, Westcave Preserve allows access to the grotto only during guided tours. Tours feature a combination of cultural and natural history. “It’s informative, an overview of this part of Texas,” said John Ahrns, the former director of the park and a fellow that is something of a Texas Hill Country legend. While Ahrns retired in 2010, his work endures simply because there is a preserve. The site has been a nature preserve since 1974. The trail into the canyon is less than a halfmile in length, one way. A short, self-guided nature trail was recently completed as well. It is about a quarter-mile in length, and will include a mix of cultural and natural history information. One of the most beautiful sights in the Dripping Springs area, the preserve offers won-

derful photo opportunities. It is more than a spectacle, however. The 30acre preserve is home to many species of wildlife, including six nesting pairs of the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. There are approximately 375 species of plants. The preserve is a sanctuary for wildlife, a living laboratory, and an educational resource. It is the mission of the park to promote conservation and environmental education. Public tours are available on weekends. School children and adults can also access Westcave during the week, if they call ahead of time. The preserve holds classes during the week, conducts spring and summer programs, and offers special tours. The preserve is leased from LCRA, and is operated by a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. There are at least 30 volunteers, including the board committee, docents, guides, and other workers. Westcave has another impressive feature as well — its Visitors Center. The building is a true showpiece. Yet it fits in perfectly with its surroundings. It is a building with a story of its own. The Warren Skaaren Environmental Learning Center is named for the late writer of the
Beetlejuice screenplay. The Warren Skaaren Charitable Trust donated the first $100,000 used to construct the center. Robert Jackson Architects, the designers of the building, received the prestigious Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects. They also received the Texas Recreation and Parks Facilities Design Award. The building was constructed with limestone from a quarry in Sisterdale, Texas. It’s designed to look like a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) building-like many park structures built during the Depression. It is aligned on a true north-south axis, to take advantage of natural heating and cooling. The building has several eco-friendly features. A heat pump system uses the temperature of the ground to help keep the building at 68 degrees. It Charles McClure Photos works as both an air conditioner and as a heater. Reimers Ranch Park stands in tribute to its namesake elcome to a slice of paradise — Milton Reimers Ranch. Located 12 miles down Hamilton Pool Road from Texas 71, the Travis County park was acquired from Milton and Joy Reimers in 2005, but their presence has been felt every day since. In fact, shortly after pulling into the park, visitors stop at Reimers’ old goat feed shed (since converted to a park ranger station) to check in before entering the heart of the 2,427 acres. The station is always busy. “People really enjoy the park,” Park Technician Roger Stacey said. Apparently, there are plenty of people that agree, and according to most, the best part of the park — aside from all of the incredible features — is a sense of park ownership that sets Reimers Ranch apart. The feeling of community in the park has existed for years, dating back to when Reimers allowed local fisherman to drop their lines along his tract on the Pedernales River. The hilly terrain and limestone cliffs make the park an ideal destination for mountain biking, hiking and climbing. It has multiple mountain biking trails, plenty of land and pools to explore, and is one of the premier places to climb in the country. On one particular weekend, visitors at the park traveled as far as four hours away just to experience the sights and adventures the park has to offer. Ronnie White and Rebecca Smith of San Antonio, had spent weeks preparing on climbing walls before coming out to the Hill Country to test their skills on the cliffs. A trek down the road to the side of the Pedernales found fishermen trying to lure the area’s famed white bass from the waters a few weeks earlier than usual, and their luck revealed the fish hadn’t arrived just yet.

Reimers Ranch has a stunning view of the Pedernales River. It is also considered to have some of the best repelling in Texas (opposite page).
“When the bass go to spawn, you can pull them out of here by the dozens,” one mused. “When the weather warms up, those fish get busy.” Every imaginable type of angler frequents the park — from fly fishermen to waders to the cork and bobber set in lawn chairs on the shore with a bucket of cold ones — each person had his or her own plan to snare the big one. The mountain biking trails are favored by a lot of riders in Central Texas, so much so that sponsored races are held from time to time. Despite the serious nature of some of the riding, the riders are often willing to help out those that aren’t as skilled. It’s a trait that many of the park goers share. The park visitors spend so much time on the land that the management includes them in the decision process. If the park management has a problem, it’s the visitors they go to first for suggestions. The park is open to visitors seven days a week from sunrise to sunset and there is a day use fee. Reimers Ranch includes three miles of continuous frontage along the Pedernales, and was the largest parkland acquisition in the history of Travis County. Like every Travis County park, ground fires are prohibited in day use, and glass containers and fireworks are also prohibited. Leashed pets are welcomed at the park.

Pedernales Falls is among the best parks in the lone star state
P
edernales Falls is the third most visited state park in Texas, drawing more than 300,000 people each year. And it’s no wonder. The park is home to one of the most arresting sights in Central Texas. Losing 50 feet of elevation over a distance of 3,000 feet, the Pedernales River rushes over stairstep limestone and winds through tilted stone outcroppings. The waterfall is the centerpiece for Pedernales Falls State Park, a 5,211.7acre park located just west of Dripping Springs, in Blanco County. The waterfall may be viewed from a scenic overlook at the north end of the park. The park offers countless opportunities for recreation. Activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, river swimming, tubing, wading, mountain biking, fishing, bird watching and horseback riding. Camping facilities include sites with water and electricity, a sponsored youth group area, hike-in primitive campsites, picnic sites, restrooms with and without showers, and a trailer dump station. There are 19.8 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, 10 miles of equestrian trails and 14 miles of backpacking trails. The park’s gorgeous hill country terrain features oak and juniper woodlands, as well as stands of pecan, elm, sycamore, walnut and hackberry. Closer to the river, one can find the buttonbush and cypress. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including over 150 species of birds, deer, rabbits, coyotes, armadillos, skunks, possums, and raccoons.

Pedernales Falls State Park is among the most arresting sights in the Texas Hill Country. Birds found in the park include quail, doves, owls, roadrunners, wild turkeys, hawks, buzzards, and herons. The endangered golden-cheeked warbler also nests in the park. If birding is your thing, pay a visit to the ADA accessible, covered bird viewing station. The facility has feeders, which are stocked from November through March, and a drip bath maintained year round. The station can hold about 15 people. To learn more about Pedernales Falls State Park-or to find out how to volunteer at the park-visit www.friendsofpfalls.org. There is also a wealth of information at the official Texas Parks and Wildlife website: www.tpwd.state. tx.us/park/pedernal/. Pound House & Pioneer Homestead allow visitors to step back into the past he Dr. Pound Pioneer Farmstead is a jewel in Central Texas history, located in the heart of Dripping Springs. It is something of a portal into times past when Dripping Springs was a hardscrabble farm and ranch community, miles from the Texas State Capitol in Austin. Dr. Joseph M. Pound and his wife, Sarah, were one of three pioneer families to settle in the area, along with the Moss and Wallace families during the early 1850s. In its early years the home was a two-room log pen-style house with a dog run. As the Pound family and community grew, so did the house. The Pounds raised nine children, seven to adulthood, and served the community by utilizing their home and grounds as a medical office and clinic, church, school and gathering place. The Pound House, which has withstood the test of time and remains as the foundation of local history, is a Recorded Texas Landmark that is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The home, smokehouse and barn have been amazingly restored, offering a glimpse of life on a farmstead in the mid 1800s. The home contains as extensive collection of original family possessions, furniture, quilts, clothing, books, physician instruments and remedies. The museum is open to the public for guided tours Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors may also schedule group tours. The property is a picturesque location with restored gardens and magnificent oak trees and is available for photo shoots and special events such as family reunions, church picnics, weddings or club gatherings. For more information and current museum hours of operation, call 512-858-2030 or visit www.drpoundpioneerfarmstead.com. The Dr. Pound Pioneer Farmstead has an entry on Ranch Road 12, one-third of a mile north of U.S. 290.
