his year’s crop of winners in House & Home’s annual Builder/ Designer Awards has impressed me in many ways. With judging criteria that places importance on each project’s use of local craftsmen and resources, green and cost-efficient building practices and sustainable materials (among other practical factors), it’s almost surprising to see so many aspects of good design and quality esthetics shine through. This isn’t a design contest, after all, yet in fact the dozen projects featured in this issue as contest winners go beyond brick and mortar to showcase tons of eye-catching appeal that spans the style spectrum. As with each issue we produce, I find it can be especially difficult as a publisher in these times to allocate enough page space to do justice to the beautiful projects and outstanding photos that capture award-winning professional efforts. As my staff and I have worked to assemble this particular issue, I find myself over and over again wishing for the luxury of additional page space. If only I had more page space… Today, as this desire for more space crosses my mind, I can’t help but compare slimmer magazine page counts to the smaller physical spaces that make up this year’s crop of award-winning homes. True to the predictions of housing professionals both local and nationwide, new homes sizes appear to be shrinking, thus reducing the market appeal of the expansive luxury homes we saw cropping up everywhere 10 years ago. To take that notion a step further, even the remodeling projects we feature lately seem to be emphasizing more careful and deliberate use of valuable square footage. In my lifetime to date, I’ve never had the luxury of an oversized home, but admittedly my lifestyle hardly called for it. Even so, in my 15 years of touring homes in our region, I’ve always appreciated smaller houses that are comfortable, intimate and luxuriously appointed. While I have nothing against a large house—particularly when it suits a large family—in my humble estimation, it just makes good practical sense to compromise size and space for quality and detail. As you flip through the pages of this issue, I hope you’ll share my awe for the professional efforts that combined to create a dozen beautiful, award-worthy construction projects, even if they do come in tidier packages. ■

6 — About the business, in one word Dedicated. When a client asks for or needs something special, my response has always been, “I’ll take care of it.” 7 — Defining good customer service It’s related to good communication skills that I mastered at a very early age. We become good friends with our clients. 8 — About dollars and “sense” We actually do what we say we will do. We don’t fudge on our services. 9 — Why we’re different There are a lot of good landscape companies in the market. I believe we set ourselves apart with the client relationships that are built on trust. 10 — My idea of a great day at work I really don’t like being in the office much. My favorite times are when I am overseeing the flower plantings in the fall and spring. n

Many beautiful outdoor projects are credited to designers and skillful builders who put their creative instincts to work on projects for clients. But where do those designers and builders go home to live and entertain with their own families? In the following cases, the places the pros call home are just as gorgeous as the homes they detail for clients. In particular, their outdoor spaces reflect the rustic nature of Louisiana and ease of entertainment.
STRAIGHT & NARROW
O
ld St. Louis brick walls give this backyard island a special kind of appeal with privacy, a pool and a mix of pretty foliage. Beyond the brick walls is a tangled collection of trees, but inside is a cool, collected haven for Lafayette homeowners in the Boulder Creek Subdivision. Jodi and Clifton Bolgiano of Bolgiano Custom Homes worked with the home’s existing lot to incorporate several features into the backyard. “There were certain elements we wanted to include in the overall design such as an
elevated tanning deck, a soft overflow from the spa into the pool and a pool shape that was geared toward exercising,” Clifton Bolgiano says. “We also wanted to maximize the pool view from the living room and master suite.” Clifton Bolgiano says he and is wife tend to utilize pool designs with clean lines and elevation changes in their building projects. Mike Baker Brick of Lafayette supplied the reclaimed antique red brick for the area surrounding the pool and the privacy walls, elements which give the landscape

a structured look. “It should be noted that when using antique bricks for pool coping, be sure to hand select individual bricks that are hard enough to resist crumbling and edge chipping,” Clifton Bolgiano says. The pool might be the main attraction of the back yard, but the other elements are directly connected to create an intimate setup. The spa with small fountain is attached to the pool with handmade blue ceramic tile creating a waterfall into the pool. Surrounding the pool and spa is an

elevated tanning deck near lounge chairs under an umbrella and a dining table from Busch Fireplace and Patio. A pair of large potted plants in intricate iron stands offers softening touches to the outside décor. “These are wonderful replicas of the giant, antique Mediterranean olive jars that are so highly prized,” Clifton Bolgiano says. “Many of the replica versions, such as these, are produced in Mexico. They are still handmade using the time-honored method, but are considerably less expensive.” Space was the only obstacle the couple faced with this project,
but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. “On one hand we were a tad space-restrained, which meant we had to design wisely so as not to restrict movement around the area or detract from visual aesthetics of the views,” Bolgiano says. “On the other hand, it allowed us to create a more intimate relationship between outdoors and indoors.” This intimate cove is perfect for relaxing or entertaining in a private setting that belies its located inside of a subdivision. The perk of this private island, aside from the cool waters, is that home is just within reach. houseandhomemagazine.net 19

n the heart of Baton Rouge just off of Highland Road, a dwelling that is nearly surrounded by wetlands is home to Theresa and Chip Blair of Blair Construction Co., Inc. The couple’s outdoor living space and kitchen, in particular, is unique in that it’s elevated. “The outdoor kitchen is elevated eight feet above the wetlands,” Theresa Blair says. “It has a beautiful view of nature and wildlife, including deer, rabbits and birds.” The kitchen—which is completely roofed to cover an adjacent seating area with fireplace—provides a sound, cozy space while still leaving room to enjoy the outdoors. The entire area is built upon a seven-foot retaining wall. Against a neutral sandy backdrop, a 20 HOUSE AND HOME

palette of ocean blue, sea foam green and rustic bronze create a soothing outdoor scene. The flooring is colored concrete scattered with rock salt and pressure washed and scoured with a tile pattern. The addition of sealed grout gives the unique surface an appearance of stone tiles. A sofa and matching chairs are made by Lay-Z-Boy to withstand the elements of the outdoors. The kitchen cabinets and TV enclosure over the fireplace are made of Spanish cedar by All Star Cabinets & Millworks of Greenwell Springs. A focal point of the kitchen is the island, painted with a distressed black finish in an effort to stand out against the lighter
neutral materials, like the smooth stucco walls created by Jay Johnson of Johnson Plastering. Beyond the kitchen enclosure is a patio created with the same concrete flooring as the roofed kitchen/living room. The patio offers seating for sunbathing and a scenic collection of greenery, including windmill palms, camellias and various colors of irises, azaleas and gardenias. For a final touch, an arbor was built over the patio for a touch of shade and ambiance. “The ample size of the outdoor space allows for cooking and relaxing around the island and a living room-like sitting area for enjoying the fireplace and watching TV,” says Theresa Blair. “We also enjoy the beautiful view of the wetlands. ■

BUILDER | REMODELER 2012 As part of House & Home’s third annual Builder/Remodeler Awards competition, professional builders, remodelers and their associates were invited to submit photos and descriptions of standout projects for publication. The awards are divided into broad categories including Whole-House Remodel/Addition, Partial-House Remodel/ Addition, New Construction, Kitchen (Indoor/Outdoor) and Bathroom. With judging criteria that emphasizes innovative design, use of sustainable materials and local resources, green building practices and more, one dozen deserving projects are presented as winners on the pages to follow. Congratulations to all of the winners!

This French Quarter residence was remodeled from its original layout of two small bedrooms into a single master suite with one larger bedroom and bath, a walk-in closet and additional storage. The new design opens up the floor plan using materials and finishes to create a consistency between the different spaces. Salvaged and refurbished materials were incorporated into the home’s new esthetic to please the clients’ preference for rustic Old World French décor and natural patinas. Many walls throughout the home include rounded corners of American Clay from Old World Finishes for the look of old stucco. In the stand-out kitchen, metal smith Nathan Logsdon created a custom hood using copper, forged iron strapping and an old beam. The island countertop is made from longleaf pine boards bound with forged iron strapping, a treatment that is repeated throughout the scheme. Additional surfacing from Tuscan Stone is black granite with a Tuscan finish and chiseled edge for the look of soapstone without the maintenance. Additional design features include old salvaged doors for the refrigerator panels and utility room door, whitewashed old wood flooring and old beams that unify the living spaces and mimic the feel of a French farm house. A French door unit was added to the kitchen wall facing the courtyard to allow more natural light and extend the interior spaces to the outdoors. 22 HOUSE and homE

Whole-House Remodel: Budget between $75,000 - $149,999 Remodeler: Kevin Jones, Tri-J Unlimited, LLC Designer/Space Planning: Alan Goodman, Goodman Designs Decorator: Tommy Hebert This new footprint of this top-to-bottom remodel was retained under the home’s original roofline in order to minimize costs. Upgrades were based on the owner’s personal height requirements, ensuring a user-friendly result. The home’s new façade is wood-free siding made of pre-painted fiber cement, all maintenance free, with fiberglass exterior doors. Insulation sprayed into the home’s interior walls is energy efficient as well as sound dampening, an important feature in smaller homes. While most of the original wood floors were reused, upgrades include new red oak flooring, a cultured marble tub surround and countertops from Cajun Marble, plus a sleek new kitchen that opens to the living and dining space.

Converting the outdoors inward, an exterior covered porch was remodeled and repurposed as an interior media/exercise/guest quarters with bath. A challenge in the plan, the proposed bathroom was encumbered by a vertical support column that could not be removed. Rather than camouflaging the column, it was tiled in glass and incorporated as a feature of the shower for artistic flair. The sleeping arrangements include a sofa bed and remote black-out shades for privacy and comfort.
