July/August 2012
”
few months ago when I tackled my master bathroom renovation, I got a few sideways glances when I described my vision for the finished project. “You want what?” asked the stone supplier. “I want a tub inside of my shower,” I repeated. “You want a tub inside of your shower?” asked the framing contractor. “Yes, I want a tub inside of the shower,” I confirmed. “Wait, you lost me,” said the tile installer. “Can you repeat that?” And it goes on. Clearly, it was difficult to describe my vision in words. With no formal design plans, my suppliers and installers lacked a blueprint for the project. Luckily, once the crew wrapped their heads around the idea, they liked it as much I do today. What’s curious and wonderful at the same time is the way each contributor to my project offered his ideas for making it better. While my vision was fairly firm going in, a few tweaks along the way made all the difference. And that should come as no real surprise since, after all, I’m no professional designer. I could stand to take a little advice. Speaking of professional advice, it’s plain to see that there was plenty of it offered in the design projects highlighted in this issue. Starting on page 14, we unveil the first set of winners in House & Home’s fifth annual Design Awards competition. Grouped under the title of “Entertainment Spaces,” these projects represent the areas in our homes where we gather to spend time with family or entertain friends. They include our indoor and outdoor kitchens, living, dining and recreation rooms, cinema and media room, and much more. Over the last few weeks as our staff reviewed the many dozens of applications submitted on behalf of the professionals who entered the contest, I was struck by a theme of collaboration that dominated almost every project. In nearly all cases, the winning designs were based first and foremost on the client’s ideas and vision. And while that might sound like an obvious starting point for any good design project, we should remember that clients hire designers for a variety of reasons including a lack of any vision whatsoever. Whether clients start with their own vision or lean on experts for inspiration, they hire professionals to guide the process. In the end, what we all hope for in our projects is that elusive touch of refinement that only a good collaboration of ideas and professional input can bring. ■

Outdoor Kitchen – Small Angelo’s Lawn-Scape of Louisiana
With the goal of creating a small outdoor kitchen and patio that would maximize 2,100 square feet of unused backyard space, three distinctive areas emerged: a 400 square-foot covered outdoor kitchen, a 925 square-foot patio and 775 square feet of landscaped green space. The kitchen and adjacent living area seat up to 10 people comfortably and open to the patio space which includes a fire pit and seating for eight plus enough open space to set up several tables for parties. The landscaping buffers an unsightly wooden fence, creating a courtyard effect.
Swimming Pool Sabine Pools, Spas & Furniture
At nearly twice the size of the company’s average design-build project, this resort-style pool and spa perfectly complements the home’s architecture, a vision of the homeowner and designer, Michael Henry. The 945-square-foot, free-form gunite pool and 78-square-foot raised round spa are surrounded by a travertine deck. A spectacular stone formation is a working fountain as well as a work of art, repeated in a smaller scale at the spa. The pool’s sloped beach ranges from entry level to a depth of nine feet while the tanning ledge features a trio of foam jets.

An outdoor space made for entertaining friends, family and young grandchildren maximizes a small backyard footprint by connecting the existing back porch and pool area with the new open kitchen space. The home’s existing brick was matched with materials used in the new construction and zthe existing rear patio was overlaid with quartzite to ease the transition from old to new. The 540-square-foot kitchen structure is oriented to block the western sun and allow the owners unobstructed views of the golf course. A complete kitchen area with bar overlooks an adjacent seating area with wood-burning fireplace and plenty of space to mingle between both areas.

Kitchen – Small While this kitchen’s layout functioned well, its stained oak cabinets, sheet vinyl flooring and laminate countertops were outdated. The clients carefully weighed their options of painting cabinetry verses the added cost of replacing them. Eventually they opted to roll back their sleeves and re-face the cabinet doors and paint the cabinets, change the light fixtures and install new tile floors and a backsplash. New Absolute Black granite countertops create a sleek work surface while newly painted walls and full-length drapery panels complement the earthy tones of the flooring.

Hand burnished walls and ceiling unite with triple crown molding and floors of alternating 12-inch and 6-inch travertine for a kitchen ripe with decorative and practical amenities. The custom maple cabinets include roll-out shelves, Lazy Susan features and a concealed TV stand above the wall oven. The room’s focal point is a custom range hood with corbels finished with antiqued plaster and edged with travertine tile. The eight-foot-long island allows seating for four people with an extended countertop supported by decorative corbels at each end. Dining Room – Small Lisa Davis Gilly / LD Linens & DÊcor
Imagination and bargain intuition are at the heart of this dining room transformation, starting with a $50 dining ensemble purchased through Craigslist after Hurricane Gustav. Refinished by the owner to their current state are the eight-foot table are nine chairs. The chandelier originally belonged to a neighbor and its original gold finish was repainted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and a combination of clear and dark waxes. Walls and shelving are painted complementary shades of cool white and blue, accented with a mix of artwork, old and new china and pottery pieces. A pair of old French doors was repurposed with mirrored panes and mounted to the ends of the built-in shelves for concealed storage.

Play/Recreation Room Rachel Cannon Lewis / SoHaus Interior Design
Busy parents of a small girl, these clients repurposed the formal dining room they rarely used into a functional play space. The beautiful yet kid-friendly room is one they’re proud to show off to guests with its clear glass chandelier replacing a dated brass fixture. Durable fabrics include the easy-care graphic print on the sofa and drapery fabric that ties in the playful yet sophisticated palette of pale gray/blue, chocolate and white. The coffee table is actually a craft table while the side tables offer storage with baskets for toys. The small round table is perfect for snacks or reading while the Lou Lou Ghost Chair duo echoes the clear element of the chandelier.

Living Room – Small
Jeanette Turk / Interiors by Decorating Den
After moving into their new home, the clients wanted a warm, comfortable living room space that would be inviting to family and friends. Working with an existing pair of upholstered club chairs as a starting point, the room’s design followed a traditional style and color palette. New sofas, tables, lamps and a mirror over the mantel accomplish a streamlined appearance. Accessories were selected to complete the look, while simple window treatments enhance the French doors.

Denise E. Smith, C.I.D. / Decorating Den Interiors A traditional, built-in bookcase once housed an older-style television, but the clients’ wish list included more modern styling, a new gas fireplace and a flat-screen television. The old-built-in unit was completely removed and replaced with a sleek new installation that includes a recessed TV with screen flush to the wall. A new gas fireplace is highlighted with a surround of glass and stainless tile mosaic. New paint complements the tile while recessed lighting, illuminated floating glass shelves and cabinets in a dark coffee finish emphasize a fresh modern style.

Rachel Cannon Lewis / SoHaus Interior Design While a wall of mirrors was an interesting feature in a client’s foyer, it presented a redecorating challenge as the only notable element in the space. Dark stained-wood doors, trim and floors suppressed any reflection of natural daylight, so each was refinished with lighter stain or paint. Offering new light are a console table with white agate top and a pendant fixture that casts a soft overhead glow. A pair of courbe ottomans ties in the berry-colored wallpaper while the painting by Jamie Oliver foreshadows the home’s dominant color palette.
Window Treatment – Complex
The client wanted a look for her window that would be different from any of the treatments she had seen before. Simple elegance was the order, emphasizing soft spa blues and chocolate brown to complement the room’s new décor. A casual Roman shade is mounted beneath a pair of theatre-pleat panels that have the appearance of floating on the wall. n 26 HOUSE and homE

Window Treatment – Simple
Karlin O’Neal / Interiors by Decorating Den Beautiful yet functional draperies were the request of a client for her dining room windows, where privacy was a priority, but so too was natural light. To accomplish this, an unlined, cream-colored fabric was selected in lieu of sheers for an Austrian shade that was custom made to fit the window arch. With the client expecting her first child, she opted for the durability of faux silk draperies in burnt sienna and chocolate brown. Ruched at the top, the panels are hung at the ceiling and puddle on the floor to accentuate the height of the room.

ummer brings mixed emotions for me. I’m not a big fan of the sticky south Louisiana heat or the extreme rate at which my lawn grows with the perfect storm mixture of sunshine and afternoon rain showers. I am, however, in love with spending time with my family on the Gulf Coast beaches and I relish the prolific summertime produce available at stores, farmers markets, pick-yourself orchards and the ubiquitous road-side farmer stalls that seem to crop up every hundred yards in an annual cavalcade of fruit bounty. Watermelon, peaches and berries of all types are some of my favorite foods, and the ability to procure them in abundance locally makes them even more special. A trip to the blueberry farm may seem like too much work for some, but I find immense satisfaction in trading a little labor under the blazing sun for 28 HOUSE and homE

Playhouse fundraiser benefits advocacy for abused children
C
apital Area CASA Association’s 18th annual Casas for CASA playhouse fundraiser is a three-week event to generate public awareness, funding and community support for CASA’s efforts on behalf of abused and neglected children. Through August 12, $5 raffle tickets will be available for a chance to win a children’s playhouse valued at $20,000. CASA will deliver the playhouse to the winner’s driveway within 100 miles of the Mall of Louisiana. The playhouse will be on display from July 21 - August 12 at the Mall of Louisiana. Raffle tickets are available at the mall, the CASA office (848 Louisiana Ave.), or online at www.casabr.org. This year’s playhouse was designed by Lilliput Play Homes and will be assembled by local builder Faulk and Meek General Contractors, LLC. This year’s title sponsor is Holmes Building Materials. Platinum sponsors include Mall of Louisiana, Faulk and Meek General Contractors, LLC and The Advocate. A children’s safety fair, CASA Kids Day will be held Sunday, August 12 from 12 to 5pm at the Mall of Louisiana. The star of Kids Day is LSU’s mascot, Mike the Tiger, who will leave his habitat and arrive in his tiger trailer at 4pm. Kids Day includes performances and activities for children of all ages throughout the afternoon. Free services like safety demonstrations, children’s ID and library cards will be available. All events lead up to the playhouse giveaway at 5pm. All proceeds from Casas for CASA will go to Capital Area CASA Association, a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains and supports community volunteers who advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children in need of safe and permanent homes. This fundraiser will enable Capital Area CASA Association to continue its efforts to provide a CASA volunteer for every child who needs one in East Baton Rouge Parish. n

CANVAS I was born and raised in Lafayette, embracing our unique Cajun culture and way of life. I grew up near Cajun Field and went to Lafayette High. I have had no formal training, so I know that my talent truly is a gift from God. PRIMER When I was a child I loved to doodle, and that eventually led me to drawing, painting and airbrushing. I airbrushed tailgates on trucks and even painted the cover of an album on my bedroom wall. I began my career in commercial art 30 years ago as a freelance artist for advertising agencies painting billboards and signs. I entered the world of visual art in the 90s. MEDIA Although I have a few pencil sketches in my collections, oil on canvas and acrylic on canvas are my mediums of choice. I would describe my style as shaken, not stirred and full of color. GENRE The subjects of my work include portraits of family and friends to celebrities, including a life-size portrait of Johnny Cash that always draws a crowd at art shows. In my landscape and wildlife collections, I’m inspired by the beauty of South Louisiana while my love for Cajun heritage is evident in newer works that I 32 HOUSE and homE

INFLUENCE The cultural richness of our region and the exotic beauty of moss-draped cypress and oak trees, these are the most prevalent focuses in my landscapes, wildlife and Pop Cajun collections. When painting portraits, I strive to capture the likeness with minimal brush strokes like old masters portrait painter John Singer Sargent.
A painter of original artwork that has been the basis of festival posters statewide, Tony Bernard is the official artist for the LSU Tigers and UL Ragin’ Cajuns. In 2008, he painted the official portraits of Gov. Bobby Jindal and wife Supriya for the Governor’s Mansion.

call Pop Cajun (pop art with a splash of Cajun joie de vie). My most popular collection is my sports art which features LSU Football and Baseball, the New Orleans Saints and the UL Ragin’ Cajuns among others.
DOLLARS & SENSE I welcome commissions and love to capture what the client envisions, however I love when God gives me a vision and I begin to paint it in my mind. The excitement of it coming to life on the canvas is always a treat. SHOW Acadian Frame & Art in Baton Rouge is my main gallery with Rue du Pont Galerie in Brueaux Bridge selling some originals as well. A retrospective of Tony Bernard will be held at the Lafayette offices of Darnall, Sikes, Gardes & Frederick, 2000 Kaliste Saloom Rd., Suite 300, from July through September. AHEAD In an effort to encourage other artists and children (especially my 7-yearold son who wishes he could draw 24/7), I plan to continue my career as a full-time artist and never retire! n
