ON THE COVER

Irving’s Frontier Spirit Reflected in Mustang’s of Las Colinas The Mustangs of Las Colinas, located in the plaza at Williams Square in the Las Colinas Urban Center, is a breathtakingly realistic bronze sculpture of nine wild mustangs galloping through a free flowing stream. Tourists from around the world visit the plaza to view the larger than life depiction. Ben Carpenter, the developer of Las Colinas, wanted the centerpiece of his development to stand as a monumental piece of art that honored Texas’s natural and untamed past. In 1976, he commissioned well-known African wildlife artist Robert Glen to bring this vision to reality. Glen spent years designing and sculpting the nine horses in his studio in Nairobi, Kenya, and casting the figures at a foundry in England. The work was completed in 1981. The mustangs were shipped by air from England to Irving. After an intricate procedure of mounting the figures, “The Mustangs of Las Colinas” was dedicated on September 25, 1984. Adjacent to the sculpture, in the West Tower of Williams Square Plaza, is the Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum. In the museum, visitors learn the story of the eight years of work Glen invested in creating the Mustangs. The museum also presents a short film which brings to life for the visitor the time and effort that went into designing, molding, and mounting this distinctive piece of public art. Other works of art by Robert Glen are also on display in the museum. Admission to the museum is free. Visitors can learn about the creation of this distinctive piece of public art by visiting The Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum in the West Tower of Williams Square at 5205 O’Connor Blvd., Monday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Residential & Commercial Real Estate Buying, Selling or Relocating call...

You the reader have judged our local resources and your responses have been tallied. The Irving Rambler printed Reader’s Choice surveys and distributed them in the newspaper. For six weeks, readers had the opportunity to nominate their favorite Irving people, places and retailers for recognition. You responded. It is obvious that our readers are passionate about their city. Readers want to know what is happening. Because of your interest, we decided to focus the articles on how you can learn more about the city not just from The Irving Rambler, but the City itself. The more you know, the more you can provide the City with suggestions for improvement. And now the long awaited results have been compiled for your enjoyment. As you shop and travel around town, be sure to congratulate the Reader’s Choice Award winners for a job well done.

Irving offers residents various ways to stay informed

F

rom print, to web, to social media, the

City of Irving is dedicated to keeping residents informed. Here’s a look at how easy it is to know what’s going on. Print—Irving offers several printed materials to keep residents in the know. • “City Spectrum” is the monthly resident newsletter that’s delivered to more than 90,000 households and provides information on city programs, events and initiatives. • “City Briefs” is a single-page insert delivered monthly to all utility bill customers. It offers city news and updates in both English and Spanish. • “City Operations Update” is compiled prior to each city council meeting and contains results related directly to the city’s Strategic Plan. Paper copies are available at meetings, and it is distributed to the city council, residents and employees via the • “All About Irving” email list.

Website The City of Irving website, cityofirving. org is a treasure trove of information. It offers news articles and videos, as well as web pages of individual departments. The site also includes the city’s event calendar. Also available are options to pay utility bills, apply for garage sale and building permits, and view city publications. Links also lead to the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce. Residents can view restaurant health scores on the “Inspections” webpage, check out upcoming development via the “Capital Improvement/Engineering” link, or offer ideas on upcoming projects via the “Public Input” tab. The “Know the Facts” tab allows community members to ask questions on any city-related

of elderly relatives or job locations. While landlines are already programmed into the system, residents can be notified via cell phone, email and text messaging by adding the information to their iALERT account. To sign up, visit cityofirving.org.

Television Irving Community Television Network (ICTN) offers three channels with programming 24/7. Viewers can enjoy award-winning programming including live meeting coverage, and original programming related to city programs, events and services. Continued on next page

topic. Responses are then posted on the “Know the Facts” webpage. Residents can sign up for the city’s weekly “All About Irving” email on the home page of the website. To subscribe, visit cityofirving.org, locate the “All About Irving” sign up area and enter a valid email address. The weekly email contains timely city news and events.

iALERT iALERT provides the community with free, up-to-the-minute public safety information on emergencies or critical situations via phone, email or text. It allows public safety officials to notify specific areas of the city’s population about gas leaks, boil water notices, power outages, crime alerts or other high priority events. Residents can add addresses that will specify the area of the city from which they want to receive information such as their home, schools or daycare centers for children, nursing homes
