Letter from the Chairman Welcome and Thank You. Thank you for supporting us through our journey. It all started with an idea that blossomed into what is now one of the biggest events during the summer in San Antonio. San Japan has grown leaps & bounds beyond what anyone has ever imagined in such a short time. We have been amazed year after year as to how many people come on out to celebrate. We appreciate that a lot of you are telling your friends about us; that is the best support that we can receive. We give the city of San Antonio a time and a place to celebrate this unique culture known as “anime”. Everyone is their own kind of fan; all kinds and all types. The staff at San Japan works all year long to put on a great show. You might be here to meet a guest; you might be here to see a friend. You might be here to buy a unique item that you can’t get anywhere else. You might want to dress up as a character. You might be here to dance the night away. We just want you to have as much fun as possible over these 3 days. San Japan puts together this unique convention due to everyone’s generous support. Just remember, San Japan is here for you.

A Brief History of San Japan San Japan was started in late 2005 by a collective group of volunteers who wanted to work together in bringing a different type of Japanese fan & culture convention to San Antonio, Texas. A hotel host location was decided by the original management and planning was started to work on San Japan [1.0] with the initial intention to debut in July 2007. However, due to issues with the chosen host location, it was decided by the acting chairman to postpone the event to ensure that San Japan made a grand debut which the attendees deserve in the Alamo City. To make up for the postponement, a one-day event was organized at Our Lady of the Lake University called San Japan: Zero Day Anime to give people a sample of what to expect for the main convention. Over 800 people attended this event. It was decided for the grand debut convention to be held at simultaneous locations at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium & El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel to be held in August 2008. After an additional year of planning, San Japan 1.5 premiered on the San Antonio Riverwalk. It was a success with over 3500 attendees at the convention. Afterward, planning was immediately started for the second year which was called San Japan 2.x. This convention happened in mid-August 2009 with 4003 attendees. In its 3rd year for 2010, upon moving to our new location at the Marriott Rivercenter, San Japan showed continued growth with 5049 attendees. San Japan is continuing onto its 4th year to be called San Japan 4TW. It is taking over the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter Hotel next to the Rivercenter Mall to host one of the city’s largest fan-run convention which is quickly growing leaps & bounds in size.

General Convention Policies Violation of ANY of the following policies are grounds for immediate expulsion from the convention without refund as well as contact of the local authorities based on severity of the offense. Please read all rules thoroughly. Ignorance is not an excuse. • • • • • • • • • •

Treat the hotel and convention staff with respect. Convention staff, guests and attendees may not engage in any activities prohibited by law. If it is illegal anywhere else, it is illegal at San Japan. Convention staff, guests and attendees may not be in possession of any item defined as a weapon, illegal or not. (See our Weapons Policy on page 17 for more details.) Convention staff, guests and attendees may not bring any animals onto the premises, with the exception of ADA Working Animals. Badges must be worn at all times and must be visible. Shoes must be worn at all times. Alcohol is not permitted in convention space. -ZERO TOLERANCEUsage or possession of illegal drugs is strictly forbidden. -ZERO TOLERANCESigns are not allowed unless the sign is part of a costume/cosplay (i.e. Genma from Ranma 1/2). This includes “Free Hugs,” “Will ___ for ___,” or any similar signs. Any signs that are not obviously a cosplay prop will be confiscated by the Safety Team. Blatant disregard or multiple violations of this rule will not be tolerated. Harrasment of any type is forbidden. -ZERO TOLERANCE-

Dance Rules For the most part, Safety will attempt to stay out of your way, however as time has proven, we are a potential necessity in this environment. If you see someone in violation of these rules, don’t be afraid to help out your fellow Attendees, and politely point it out to them. • • • • • • • • • • • • •

No bags larger than a handbag are allowed. This includes: laptop bags, backpacks, duffle bags, and messenger bags. Safety will NOT watch bags or other items for you. Period. Take your items to your vehicle or room before attending the dance. The Safety Team reserves the right to bar entry with good reason. The Safety Team may initiate a voluntary bag or pocket check for contraband. Nothing attached to a string or chain than can be swung are allowed on the main dance floor. A safety area will be set up for this. No cosplay props or weapons are allowed in the dance area. No lightsabers. Shoes must be worn at all times. No fighting or dance fighting. Rave circles are allowed. If you have a history of seizures, asthma, or heart attack, please AVOID the Dance. The heat and flashing lights may trigger attacks. Be mindful of those around you at all times. No means No. Harassment will not be tolerated. If you are being harassed, please indicate so to a member of the Safety Team. Any solicitation of Alcohol or Drugs, will lead to an Immediate Expulsion from the convention (Without Refund), as well as contact of the local authorities.

Event and Line Policies These rules are in place for the sole reason of getting you to the event sooner and with less hassle. The closer everyone abides by them, the less hang ups we have, and the sooner you get back to what you love. • • • • • •

Keep lines single file, and stay close to the wall/barricades. No cutting in line. Do not argue with the staff if they attempt to correct you or give suggestions. Keep in mind that the staff is not yelling at you, but they have to speak loudly enough for the entire line to hear which can be difficult at times. The convention is LOUD. The staff has to BE LOUD in order for everyone to hear us. Don’t take OFFENSE to it. Completely fill in seats. Try not to leave empty spaces. We will ask everyone to move in next to each other for popular events. Any event specific rules will be announced at the start of the event. Please listen while they are being announced.

Staying Healthy At San Japan, we want all of our attendees to have nothing but the best experiece possible. The best experience at any convention begins and ends with everyone staying healthy while still having fun. While there is a lot to do over this 3-day convention weekend, we don’t want anyone trying to do everything and over-extending themselves. This is the easiest and quickest way to making San Japan more stressful than fun! Everyone should try to make time in their day for the essentials. These can be easily remembered with the 6-3-1 Rule. Staying Hydrated: It’s Awesome! On top of the 6-3-1 Rules, everyone should always remember to stay hydrated. This is South Texas in the late summer, so beat the heat with some water. There are no substitutions for H2O. Here at San Japan, there will be plenty of it located at our water stations scattered all over the convention floor. We will try our best to keep them full of goodness if you do your best to keep on drinking it. If you’re dancing and doing other activities, please remember, if you are thirsty: Find water quick! You could be dehydrated before you feel thirsty. So be careful and drink water, because water is good and good for you.

6-3-1 Rule: Guaranteed to keep you awesome all weekend long! • 6 Hours of Sleep every day. This is a minimum! Please strive to achieve the recommended 8 hours of restful sleep each night to achieve the maximum amount of fun the following day. • 3 Meals every day. We won’t hound you for not eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at the appropriate times. Try to have 3 complete/square meals each day here at San Japan. A complete meal includes mostly carbohydrates (fruit, vegetables, grains), some protein (whether you choose meat or vegetarian/vegan options), and a little essential fats (oils and seeds). Eating pocky and drinking ramune doesn’t count as they are loaded with sugars. There are plenty of places around the hotel to find food. And let’s not forget the awesome, super-cheap food court located in the Rivercenter Mall. • 1 Shower/Bath every day. Having your friends help you spray head-to-toe in Febreeze, Axe, or any other perfumes doesn’t count! Don’t be “that guy” or “that girl” who has “con funk” that ruins the experience for everyone else. Staying clean is serious business and there is no substitute for good ol’ fashioned soap and water. Before stepping onto the convention floor, please take the time to bathe. Don’t forget the deodorant too!

A Note to Parents Thank you for joining us for our fourth year. San Japan is an all-ages, family-friendly event, and to encourage parental involvement, there are some informative panels that parents may consider attending to promote a happy, healthy, and fun convention experience for their entire family. There are two panels of special interest that inform parents how our convention works. On Friday at 1:00pm in Panel Room 1, the SJ Events Staff will host a parent panel where we will answer any questions you may have and introduce themselves. On Saturday at 10:30am in Panel Room 2, Michelle Rojas will give advice and tips on parenting for those with anime-loving kids and cover several subjects including discipline, self-esteem, and co-parenting. While San Japan is a family-friendly convention, we do have attendees of all ages. After about 10:00pm on Friday and Saturday, the Panel rooms shift into age-restricted programming. We do however keep Video rooms, Dance, and Karaoke running which are all age appropriate. Be aware of where your kids are, especially at night.

Attention all Parents: Want to get away from the loud noises and craziness happening on the main floor of San Japan? Still want to be on-site but want a chance to get some peace and quiet? We have set aside a room for you. Board Room #514, which is on the 5th floor of the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel, will be a designated Parent Room dedicated to all parents and guardians who just need a place to sit down so that they can relax. This room will be open from 9am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday, 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

Guests Bryan Massey

Voice Actor

Bryan Massey was born in Pontiac, Michigan but moved to Dallas, Texas when he was just 7 years old. He began his illustrious acting career at the tender age of 9 when he made the local paper by winning the 5th grade talent show lip syncing to Steve Martin’s “King Tut.” At the age of 13, Bryan showed an interest in cartooning and filmmaking, so his Dad bought him a Super 8mm camera. Recruiting the neighborhood and his family, Bryan would spend his weekend’s shooting comedic action shorts with his beloved camera. During high school, Bryan dropped out of football because it conflicted with his theater schedule. In college, Bryan had lead roles in several musicals, participated in community theater, made several short movies with his buddies on campus, and was a nationally ranked member of the cheer-leading squad. After earning an Associate’s Degree in Radio/Television, Bryan decided to pursue his acting career and moved to Hollywood, where he got his SAG card playing a Nazi on the X-Files. After spending 4 years in Los Angeles Bryan returned home to Texas, working in local improvisation troupes and continuing to write his own projects. With no local agent he would later go on to get a stint on Prison Break, only after crashing the audition! He quickly went on to sign with a local agent and due to his unique gruff voice, Bryan was able to participate in his love of cartoons by doing voice over work for many anime shows and video games. Bryan has booked several commercials and acted in many short films and independents. Bryan has also been able to go onto more prolific roles including playing Detective Brinkley, a cop in hot pursuit of Diane Keaton and Ted Danson in “Mad Money”, as Skeeter, an oil man friend to Josh Brolin’s portrayal of George W. Bush in Oliver Stones critically acclaimed “W” and can also be seen this February 2011 seen as Officer Lerma in the 3D thriller “Drive Angry” with Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard. Some of his well-known anime roles include Ladd Russo in Baccano!, Oolang in Dragon Ball Kai, Takuro in Linebarrels of Iron, Monkey D. Dragon in One Piece, Tenshiro in Rideback and Willie in To.

Brad looks forward to discussing his current and recently completed voice projects (but must wait until they’ve been officially announced…sorry). AUTOGRAPH

J. Michael Tatum

Voice Actor

Nurtured on anime classics from the tender age of Star Blazers, et al, this reclusive fanboy-turned-voice actor/writer/ADR director/flake extraordinaire spent more years than he cares to remember in what might charitably be described as freefall before landing - mostly by accident - smack dab on the industry of his dreams. To this day, some believe the small crater made by the impact remains the source of his power. Discovered by Funimation warhorse and visionary ADR director Christopher Bevins, who cast him as Rikichi in 2005′s Samurai 7, Tatum’s inexplicable luck held long enough to see his flag hoisted on a slew of dream roles, most notably Kyoya Otori in the hit English language dub of Ouran High School Host Club. Other characters the man still can’t believe he’s had the crazy good fortune to play include: Doumeki in XXXHolic, Jiro Mochizuki in Black Blood Brothers, Isaac Dian in Baccano! God Eneru in the new dub of One Piece, Komui Lee in D-Gray Man, Dororo in Sgt. Frog, and the titular loveable savage of Heroic Age…not to mention Lawrence in Spice and Wolf, and Scar in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. His vocal “stylings,” much to the chagrin of drama teachers everywhere, he’s sure, have also been featured in Romeo X Juliet, Speed Grapher, Trinity Blood, Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, Black Cat, Nabari no Ou, Ghost Hunt, School Rumble, The Tower of Druaga, Aquarion, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, Shuffle, Shigurui, Glass Fleet, Mushishi, and the feature-length film Vexille, among many others. And as if being involved with so many awesome shows wasn’t enough, in late 2007 the flunky so-and-so tempted fate by officially branching out into ADR directing and adaptive scriptwriting for Funimation as well. His ADR directing credits to date include Aquarion, Jyu-oh-Sei, Romeo X Juliet, Big Windup, and Rin, while his writing credits include substantial work on both Ouran High School Host Club, Heroic Age and Blassreiter. He is currently burning the midnight oil on a number of exciting projects due for release later this year. And before you ask, the “J” stands for… Well, it stands for whatever you’d like it to.

Descendants of Erdrick

Video Game Music Band

Descendants of Erdrick is a rock band dedicated to recreating classic video game music on real, sweaty instruments; from the well-known, time-honored tunes of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend Of Zelda, to the epic arrangements of Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, with a few obscure tunes in between. Established in 2009 by musicians who grew up with controllers in their hands, later replaced with musical instruments, the band’s mission is to convey through performance the excitement they feel for these quality songs. The name of the group is an homage to one of the first console RPG’s, Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan), wherein the player is a “descendant” of the legendary hero, Erdrick. So too is the sound of “D of E” descended from the great synthesized tunes of gaming’s golden years.

Amelie Belcher

Artist

Amelie “Ami-Chan” Belcher was born in Baton-Bloody-Boring-Rouge Louisiana where the combination of chemical plant fumes and river water did major damage to her fragile little mind at an early age. By all accounts, she started drawing at the age of five (when she figured out that the pencil goes on the paper and not up your nose) and didn’t stop drawing until she ran out of paper…twenty years later. Amelie taught high school art for four years, but lost interest in teaching when it started cutting into her drinking time. She now travels the country selling her award winning art, doing one of a kind commissions for con goers, giving the best damn panels on earth, and being paid tribute to by her army of fans known as the “Ami Army” in the form of Pocky and manga. Known as “the angriest chick on the net”, she is the creator of the popular web comic “The Real Life Adventures of Amelie” at Cordeval.com which is read by desperately bored people all around the world.

Cosplay and Weapons Policies Cosplay Policies: • Cosplayers may wear lyricals in place of shoes. • SHOES MUST BE WORN WITH ALL COSTUMES. You may take them off for pictures, but please remember to put them back on. • The Convention reserves the right to deem a costume as unacceptable and request that the wearer make modifications, or change entirely. (Just do not walk around the convention space with hardly a sliver of clothing. Only consider wearing the costume if you would gladly wear it in the middle of the Riverwalk for EVERYONE to see it). • Weapons must be checked by Safety Staff. • If you wish to have photos taken with Live Steel, there will be an area set aside near the Safety Desk. • Please be mindful of your costumes. IF IT IS NOT PG-13 AND ABLE TO BE LEGALLY WORN IN PUBLIC IT WILL NOT BE WORN AT SAN JAPAN. PERIOD. There will be children present and we are in public folks. • You MUST have your badge on at all times to show you paid to be in the convention. Make sure when you costume it is still visible. Moving it or taking it off for pictures is fine, but please remember to put it back on. Weapon Policies • NO PLAY FIGHTING OR SWINGING YOUR PROPS. • If Safety decides a Weapon is too dangerous you will be asked to return the item to your room/car. If you take this as a mere suggestion, you will be expelled from the convention without refund. Please check in with the Safety Desk as they will check to ensure it is acceptable with them. • The Cosplay Show is a special event that will have its own special rules for cosplay props and weapons you can use for your costumes during a performance or the main show. The Cosplay directors have always shown our Safety Director we can trust them to be safe. This exception is only for the show and under their direction and guidance. Follow their rules! • WE DO NOT PEACE BOND! Period. So do not ask. NO LIVE STEEL! If it is for the cosplay competition then we will only allow it if you are verified as a contestant and the prop is not sharp in any way. The Cosplay staff has any final decision on their event. DO NOT come to us if they say no. We will back them up in EVERY way upon their decision! If you buy any item from the dealer’s room it must be transported OUT of the convention immediately to your room or car. DO NOT CARRY IT AROUND UNLESS IT IS IN THE BOX THEY WRAP IT IN. THE DEALERS KNOW THIS AND ARE READY TO DO THAT. • NO AIRSOFT GUNS THAT ARE NOT PERMANENTLY DISABLED TO NO LONGER FIRE ANY PROJECTILES! THE TIPS MUST BE COMPLETELY COVERED OR FILLED IN AS TO SHOW THE BARREL IS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE USED. IT MUST HAVE A LOT OF ORANGE PAINT ON IT. THE TRIGGERS MUST NOT WORK. MISS ANY OF THESE AND YOUR WEAPON IS NOT ALLOWED. • Do not argue with the Safety Staff if they say NO to a prop. Do not ask for the Director as Safety picks the staff and the Directors/Convention Chairman for San Japan will back up their decisions. If your prop has been pre-approved then you must bring the e-mail the Safety Director send you as proof. We will bring copies as well to verify. • If we catch any props that have not been properly checked by the Safety Staff as we walk around the convention, you will be asked to go to the Safety Desk and then continue having fun after the safety check is completed. If anyone tries to sneak props in or just try to avoid the rules on this you will be asked to leave the convention with no refund. • Swinging any prop or item such as paddles is a fast way for you to be asked to take it home and we will ban them in the future. You may carry the paddle but NO CONTACT is to be made to another person. If one person at the convention breaks this rule on paddles, we will PERMANENTLY ban them IMMEDIATELY. Don’t be “that guy” or “that girl” who ruins the fun.

Steampunk Attire Contest The San Antonio Neo-Victorian Association is proud to present San Japan’s First Annual Steampunk Attire Contest, in which the most fashionable amongst you will compete in your fantastic Steampunk outfits for awards, prizes and the respect & acclaim of your peers. Come! This event is a “Hall Cosplay”, it is not an actual separate event. Sign-up will be located in the Cosplay Signup Room. Take part in the competitive yet friendly experience and show us the best you can muster!

What We’re Looking For Our judges will be reviewing each contestant for various points, all coming from the following: • Originality • Attention to Detail • Craftsmanship • Wow Factor • Judge’s Discretion

What is Steampunk? Steampunk, by its very nature of being inspired by worlds that never were, seeks out to create fanciful worlds that could be. Born out of Victorian Era science-fiction and a mentality Captain Nemo would be proud of, Steampunk has crossed over through literature, music, politics, philosophy, animation, film, television, visual arts and fashion. Once and somewhat still heavily inspired by Victorian Britain and America, Steampunk has branched away to new lands and times, real and/or fictional, while still maintaining its retrofuturist aesthetic and unique attitude.

Contestants will have the chance to explain and model their outfits before the judges. If you wish to know more, please consult our judges at the table.

From Aether Emporium (http://www.etheremporium.pbworks. com/): “Steampunk’s true definition is a point of constant debate. Its roots laying in a Victorian/ Edwardian industrial aesthetic with a ‘do it yourself’ ethos. It is one of eclectic design and influence, flexible and adaptable. The genre shouts out for those who take part to be creative, to become artisans. This ethos manifests itself wholeheartedly in its fashion, as eclectic as the genre, so are the clothes. Body modification in the forms of tattoos and piercings, the creation of hand made goggles, belt buckles and jewelery, to produce items from found, 2nd hand or reclaimed objects that will become more than a sum of their parts.”

Best in Class: The judges will choose one outfit in each class to win this award as the best in their class out of their respective class.

Awards for Stage There will be several awards presented at the San Japan Cosplay Show. The following are brief descriptions of each: Best in Show: The judges will choose one outfit across the classes to win this award as the best overall out of all the entrants.

Best Craftsmanship: The outfit deemed by the judges to have the best craftsmanship will win this award. Most Imaginative: The outfit deemed by the judges to be the most imaginative will win this award.

Class System Contestants will be divided into one of the following classes: Formal: Those contestants dressed in what would be considered a formal Steampunk fashion may enter this category. This may be anything from High Victorian to Edwardian to Late Baroque and so on and so forth with Steampunk accouterments. However, it must be considered formal by the judges or else it will be reclassified into either the Airship Crew/Pirate or Creative category. Airship Crew/Pirate: This class is for all the airship, submersible, transdimensional, space, etc pirates out there. The contestant’s outfit must fit with the Steampunk pirate motif and if the judges disagree with its pirate-ness, it will be reclassified into the Creative class. Creative: Steampunk is not just fancy balls and sky privateering, but rather has expanded to include other realities, times, professions, and styles. All of the innovative attire that does not fit into the other two classes or is self-classified as such by the contestant will be judged within this class. Note about Classes: Contestants may enter as singles or as a group in any of the classes. Attire does not need to be AmeroEuropean and if it can be considered to fit in any of the above classes for another culture and the contestant can properly justify it, then it will be judged without discrimination. Steampunk is international, in fiction and in reality and we expect the attire on display will reflect that. After all, this is a Japanese animation convention, isn’t it?

Masquerade Time of the Event: Friday, August 5th at 9:00pm Location: Main Programming **An ALL-AGES Event** Attire The masquerade will have a semi-formal dress code. You will not be allowed in unless you follow the dress code and have an appropriate mask. Anything remotely similar to dance/club/rave clothing (mesh clothing, large pants with straps, anything with glow sticks) will be rejected. However, we DO encourage you to attend the informal electronic dances taking place at San Japan on Friday in Main Events at midnight and Saturday in Main Events at 11:30pm! Traditional Western Dress Women For those planning to dress in female formal attire, it should be at least semi-formal. Prom dresses, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns are acceptable. Tailored suits are also acceptable. Excessively tight clothing or anything you would wear to a dance/club/rave is not acceptable. Skirts must be at least kneelength, see “Skirt Length” below. Men Male formal wear should be considered at least semi-formal. Think ‘Sunday Best’, wedding, or job interview. While a tuxedo would be delightful and encouraged, those dressing in men’s formal attire can wear a suit or, at the very minimum, a nice button-up long sleeved shirt, tie, slacks, and belt. Vests and/or jackets are also highly encouraged. Please make sure to iron out any wrinkles to keep it nice and crisp. Footwear All footwear should adhere to the semi-formal rules. Flip flops/ thong sandals, bare feet, heavy boots, clunky platform boots, slippers/house shoes, and any kind of sneakers/tennis shoes are prohibited. Black tennis shoes and work shoes are not considered dress shoes and will not be allowed. Please remember that this is a dance, so you will probably be moving around a lot. Try to choose shoes that you will be comfortable dancing in, as long as they fit the rules. Skirt Length Skirt length is often a hot topic among those attending a ball. We ask that all those wearing a skirt to please be reasonable about the length. Skirts should be at least knee-length, give or take a few inches. We realize that skirts may not fit the same way on everyone depending on their height, but please aim for modesty. We won’t have a ruler out to check the length at the door, but we will make sure we won’t have to worry about you flashing the crowd accidentally. Slits in skirts must be no higher than mid-thigh. Short pants (knee length, as in kodona or boystyle Lolita fashion) will be allowed if the rest of the attire fits the rules. For example, Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji or Souseiseki from Rozen Maiden fits the criteria.

28

Masks All participants are required to wear a mask. Make sure whatever mask you choose covers at least one eye, but make sure it does not impair your field of vision so you don’t accidentally trip. Eye patches and J-fashion/VKei style masks that cover only the mouth and nose do not count. Gas masks and helmets are not formal and will not be allowed. There are many types of masks out there. It can be simple or you can choose to go all out and make something extravagant. Just keep in mind that whatever you choose to wear, you will need to wear it for the duration of the ball. You may attach your mask to your face with elastic, body adhesive, spirit gum, etc. or it may be a stick mask that you hold in front of your face. Traditional Eastern Dress Those wearing formal Eastern dress should be clothed neatly and in full attire. This means full kimono, full haori and hakama, cheongsam, etc. While sandals are not allowed with most outfits, you may wear nice-looking zori or geta with Japanese formal attire. Cosplay Dress While cosplay is welcome, we ask that all cosplayers adhere to the semi-formal rule. Those in cosplay should choose attire that reflects the rules. Formal military, Lolita attire, and other cosplay related elegant outfits will be acceptable. If there is a character you absolutely love, but their outfit doesn’t fit the rules, you can adjust their outfit to fit the rules or plan to bring a different outfit. Crossplay is allowed if it is done seriously and if the attire adheres to the rules. Props, Wings, Etc. While we would love to allow large props and giant wings, we ask that you do not bring them to prevent damage to them or injury to yourself or others. For safety reasons, large costumes such as mascot suits or mecha will not be allowed, even if they are wearing formal attire. Personal Hygiene I know this can be a taboo subject for many a con-goer, but this is a fancy occasion. Please put EXTRA effort into personal hygiene. Take a shower before you get dressed. Brush your teeth. Use mouth wash, gum, or a mint. Use lots of deodorant! However, do not drench yourself in body spray, perfume, or cologne. Use it sparingly if you have to at all – others may be allergic to or be sensitive to strong scents.

Ani-Idol Presented By:

What Is Ani-Idol? Ani-Idol is a karaoke-style competition based on the famous show seen on TV. However, unlike the famous TV show, no one will be critical of their singing abilities on-the-spot. People sign up for this event to sing songs which must be primarily in Japanese in front of professional judges and a live audience. There are three rounds total. Participates are rated on vocal/singing performance, showmanship / presentation and stage appeal.

Judges and Judging Judges for Ani-Idol are chosen from a pool of people who have an extensive history or career in music and/or theatre arts. Contestants will be assigned a numerical score from 1-10 by each judge based on singing performance, presentation and stage appeal. The scores from each judge are then tallied to come up with a total score for the contestant. The winners will be determined by the total sum of their scores.

General Rules • The contest is open to all registered convention attendees. You must have a valid attending member badge for the days of the contest. There is no additional cost to register for the contest. • No professional vocalists may enter the Ani-Idol competition. If you are found out to be a professional, you will be disqualified. A “professional” is monetarily compensated for his or her work as a singer or actor. • Cosplay is allowed at the event but is not required. • The contest will be split into three parts: Audition, Second Round, and Finals. In order to compete, you must be able to attend all three rounds. If you are in multiple events, we will try our best to work with you. Contestants are not required to stay the entire time, and are welcome to leave if they need to run to another event. We will also bump up contestants if they need to be somewhere else at a certain time. The rounds will be scheduled for as follows: Audition – Friday, August 5th – 4-6PM Panel Room 4 Second Round – Saturday, August 6th – 11AM – 12:30PM Main Programming Finals – Saturday, August 6th – 4-5PM Main Programming

All decisions made by the judges are final. In each round judges will receive a judge sheet for each contestant. Along with scoring area, there will be areas for judges to write down constructive criticism/suggestions, and anything else they feel is helpful. After each round is over and judging is complete, contestants can pick up their sheets at the Mu Epsilon Kappa booth to keep.

Additional Information During the contest, no interaction with the MC is allowed. Contestants may not touch or approach the judges’ table. Contestants may not go into the audience or use an audience member in their act. Actions that encourage general audience participation as a whole (such as asking the crowd to clap) are okay.

• •

All aspects of the act, including, but not limited to: costume, conduct on stage, and song lyrics, are to abide by no worse than a PG-13 standard. The only persons allowed in the performing area are the MC, convention staff, Mu Epsilon Kappa staff, convention special guests, judges, and contestants. Decisions made by Mu Epsilon Kappa or the convention are final and non-negotiable. All rules for the Ani-Idol Contest are subject to change without notice. While we attempt to keep you up to date of any changes via the convention website, these changes may occur at any time.

• •

Contestants must be at least 13 years old. Sign-Ups for the Audition will be at the Mu Epsilon Kappa booth, located by the Social Room, beginning Friday and will continue until 30 minutes before Auditions. Sign-up will then move to outside the panel room where the contest will be held. Check-In for Auditions will begin 15 minutes before the contest. You must be present at the contest when it begins. If your name is called and you are not there, you will be passed over. If you are late and wish to sign-up for the audition, we will put you in if time permits. Those who sign-up in advance have top priority. Contestants will be required to bring your own music for the contest. Music must be on a CD and labeled clearly with song name and track number. We do not want contestants to get on stage and have the wrong song play. Triple check the CD to make sure it works. We can also accept USB drives. Please do not bring your IPod as your source of music as they will not be accepted. Song choices for second and third round should be at least 2 minutes in length and not exceed 5 minutes. Duets/groups are perfectly fine, however, understand that we might not have prizes for everyone in the group. Also, we might only have a limited number of mics, so you will have to adjust to that if you are in a group. Also, if the duet/group makes it past auditions, they MUST attend the other rounds with the same partner/group members.
