California Bear Creek Ranch powering agricultural water pumps with solar energy. Conergy’s Solar Large Projects Group completes the 300 kW solar power plant. Bear Creek Ranch, an affiliation of Pacific Ag Management, in Wasco, California chose Conergy’s Solar Large Projects Group as the project developer for its 1.5-acre solar energy power generation site . The solar energy site will power the water pumps and irrigation system for the surrounding almond orchards. Brought into the project at its conception phase, Conergy is providing development, EPC and O&M services, along with assistance in securing financing. Using Conergy P modules and Conergy’s SolarLinea driven-pile ground mounting, the solar site will annually produce 470,000 kWh of clean solar energy, which is equivalent to reducing CO2 levels by 308,000 pounds per year or not driving nearly 6 million miles. Wanting to reduce their costs and hedge against rising utility rates, Bear Creek Ranch decided to install a solar power plant. Using an operating lease financing structure, the power plant will provide the ranch $2.6 million in utility savings over the next 25 years. “By implementing a solar power plant we are able to turn our energy costs into predictable fixed costs. By hedging against rising utility rates, we can increase our profitability, have better cost control and improved forecasting capabilities.” says Keith Gardiner, Managing Partner of Bear Creek Ranch. “We chose Conergy as our project developer due to its track record, its reputation of installing similar systems on agricultural operations and the Company’s responsiveness.” "Working on many agricultural solar energy projects, Conergy has the insight and experience to develop cost effective solutions for the unique challenges this sector faces, such as being heavily dependent on electricity to irrigate crops. We are pleased that we can apply this experience to the development of Bear Creek Ranch’s solar power plant development," said Conergy’s David Vincent, Project Development Manager. “With this solar power plant, Bear Creek Ranch is showing their environmental stewardship and energy leadership in the agricultural industry.” From planning, financing and engineering to procurement, construction, permitting, and maintenance, the Conergy Solar Large Projects Group has provided turnkey solutions to meet a continuum of renewable energy objectives. To every project, the Group brings its experience in developing power plants around the world from a 10 MW system for a Michelin manufacturing plant which

6

at the time of interconnection was the largest rooftop installation in the world to 20+ MW installations in Spain and South Korea. In the United States, the Projects Group team brought online a 2 MW ground-mounted photovoltaic installation at the Fort Carson U.S. Army base in Colorado, a 3 MW ground mounted photovoltaic installation in Pennsylvania for Exelon and a 1.6 MW tracker system in California for the South San Joaquin Irrigation District. The SolarLinea is a Conergymanufactured driven-pile mounting system for free-field PV installations. With a terrain-adaptable design, the SolarLinea adapts to a ±10% terrain variation and minimizes or completely eliminates site modification. The system is designed to decrease the total install cost of PV system, from labour, equipment and other overhead costs. Offering design flexibility and optimal use of space, the SolarLinea is available in both a dual and single post options. ❑ About Conergy USA Only Conergy delivers solar energy systems from a single source. Brainwave Research Corporation

For Contractors. By Contractors™ Engineering Excellence. Elegance in Simplicity. The team at Brainwave is passionate in developing new products and improving on existing products to make the work of contractors and installers easier and faster. Who would have thought of: Simplifying installation of electrical boxes and providing flexibility to mix and match low voltage and line voltage devices by the use of simple snap-in screw-less brackets? • Designing the first vapor barriers for Rework construction. These can be installed in 30 seconds. • Re-inventing the traditional resilient channels to support pot lights. • Redesigning the traditional arm on pot lights, for installation on T-bars and on Brainwave’s Resilient Channels. • Designing ceiling brackets and rails to simplify the installation of pot lights by enabling them to be “dropped in place” and allowing adjustment along a second axis. • Designing easy-to-install ceiling vapor barriers which can also be used as dust and sound barriers. • Designing a bracket for low voltage devices which can be snapped in without screws in less than 5 seconds.

Passion for Innovation Brainwave is grabbing the attention of the industry’s major players - manufacturers and distributors alike. A relatively new entrant in our construction and telecom scene, the company embodies a work ethic and culture that traditionally has driven our economy. “Being up Friday and Sunday nights brainstorming until 1:00 o’clock in the morning, conferencing with our patent attorneys until 11:00 o’clock at night, in our goal to file one to two patents each month and emailing each other at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, is not uncommon ” Rene Pardo, CEO, co-founder of Brainwave excitedly expresses. (Not new to innovations, Mr. Pardo is also co-inventor of the electronic spreadsheet, the world’s first software patent, and other “world firsts”). Most of Brainwave’s shareholders are strategic; lending decades of expertise in electrical contracting, manufacturing, product innovations, patent protection, and management of high growth technology companies. “Having been in the industry for over 30 years, I see Brainwave’s growing patent portfolio and new product diversity making it a jewel for technology licensing or acquisition by our industry’s giants”, stated Curt Powell, President & Founder of The President’s Council. “The industry enjoys so many knowledgeable, seasoned product managers and leaders who have decades of in-depth understanding and experience in bringing products to market. It’s an honor to meet them at the different trade shows.” Pardo concluded. ❑

2011 Solar Year in Review U.S. industry looks ahead to 2012 By Jeffrey Philpott

Did you know that the U.S. solar industry was one of the fastest growing sectors of the nation’s economy in 2011? The media might have latched on to some of solar’s lower points of 2011 — the politicized fallout of Solyndra’s closure, for example — but the industry continues to grow stronger. For every bankruptcy in 2011, you also heard about new projects and product innovation. Yes, there is some uncertainty surrounding 2012 and what it holds for the nation’s solar industry. But turmoil or not, we’ve got some serious points of pride and excitement on the horizon. The U.S. solar industry in 2011 finally exceeded the one-gigawatt mark for solar capacity and also marked a record third quarter. The U.S. solar industry installed 449 megawatts of new solar electric capacity in Q3, more than what was installed all year in 2009, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight 3rd Quarter 2011 report produced by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association. However, the report indicates the U.S. solar market faces “substantial market uncertainty” with financing and political risks, including the expiration of the Section 1603 Treasury Program. In looking specifically at the utility side of the solar market, GTM Research estimates completion of 1,421 megawatts of U.S. utility photovoltaic (PV) installations for 2012. To put things in perspective, 267 megawatts was the total number for utility PV installations in 2010. Solar jobs are projected to continue to be a bright spot in a dim economy. As of August 2011, the U.S. Solar Industry employed more than 100,000 solar workers, defined as those workers who spend at least half their time supporting solar-re-

12

The Electric Current February 2012

lated activities, according to the National Solar Job Census 2011, conducted by The Solar Foundation and BW Research Partnership’s Green LMI Consulting division with technical assistance from Cornell University. The census data shows that 100,237 Americans are now working in the solar industry as of August 2011. That’s a hefty number when you look at data from the National Solar Jobs Census and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (compiled by the Vote Solar Initiative). Compared to 84,290 jobs in iron and steel manufacturing, 79,500 jobs in coal mining and 35,160 jobs in crude oil and natural gas pipeline transportation, it becomes clear that solar is not only a growing industry with a bright future but that it’s already eclipsed many traditional energy and manufacturing sectors. The August 2011 report is up 6.8 percent year over year from 2010. It is also worth noting that U.S. solar companies added jobs during the August-to-August time frame at a pace much faster than the general economy. In comparison, the national unemployment range sat tight around the nine-percent range during the 12 months of the 2011 survey, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which also reported an 8.9 percent annual average unemployment rate for 2011. This trend is expected to continue. Over the next 12-month period, from August 2011 to August 2012, nearly 50 percent of solar firms expect to add jobs while only 2.6 percent expect to cut workers. This indicates opportunity for current solar professionals as well as those thinking about adding it to their list of competencies. The number of U.S. solar workers is expected to grow by nearly 24 percent — approximately 24,000 new jobs — by August 2012. Nearly half of solar installation firms expect to be hiring during the August-to-August window, with an expected growth of more than 13,000 in solar installation in 2012, a 25 percent increase. In addition to the job story, another bright spot for the industry in 2011 was the real emergence of residential third-party finance, including lease and power purchase agreement (PPA) programs. Although not a totally new concept, the impact of these offerings was strongly felt in the residential market this year. And, the trend bodes well for continued growth in 2012. With a business model that allows homeowners to lease or purchase power from a PV system provider instead of actually buying the hardware, many homeowners were able to take advantage of solar savings without the sometimes daunting upfront payment that purchasing requires. Under this model, homeowners can usually begin saving from day one and are protected from rising power prices over time,

+ yet there’s no need for a large down payment or concerns about maintenance, as the solar installation or financing company takes care of those details. Leading companies in the space included Clean Power Finance, SunRun, Sungevity, SunPower, and SolarCity. 2011 was another year of outstanding results for SMA America, the U.S.-based subsidiary of global solar inverter leader SMA Solar Technology AG, which celebrated 30 years in business earlier this year. Highlights from the past year for SMA include expanding our utility-grade solar portfolio with the MV Power Platform and CP-US solar inverters, which have become the most deployed utility-scale inverter systems in North America. For residential installers, SMA introduced the industry’s most efficient slim-line inverter, making small system installation easier and more productive than ever. SMA looks forward to continued growth in 2012 and to introducing a number of new products and services including the Sunny Boy 240 micro inverter. Designed for small systems, rooftops with multiple orientations, or where shading is unavoidable, the Sunny Boy 240 can be used as a stand-alone solution or in conjunction with a Sunny Boy string inverter, improving energy harvest while making projects more cost effective. SMA also plans to add new commercial and utility-scale solutions to its product lineup. To help educate both new and seasoned installers on the proper use of SMA products, safety features, code compliance and installation best practices, SMA will also be offering and an enhanced solar education and technical training program through its Solar Academy. Featuring a state-of-the-art training facility in Rocklin, Calif., the SMA Solar Academy provides installers with the knowledge and skill set necessary to use SMA inverters and communication hardware. Training will also be offered at rotating sites across North America and through online webinars. Additionally, the Sunny PRO Club, SMA America’s membership-based professional partnership program, which launched its Regional Forum series in 2011, will continue bringing free educational solar events to qualified electrical and PV professionals in the coming year. Regional Forum attendees gain valuable access to both technical education and SMA’s service and training personnel. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by visitingwww.SMARegionalForums.com. Although 2011 was marked by global ups and downs in the industry, the future remains bright for continued U.S. job growth and a healthy 2012. ❑

Phone a friend to make solar simpler By Ciara Wakefield Nobody likes to be kept waiting. Customers want to get the most out of their photovoltaic solar plants. Maximum energy production is important, no matter the size of a PV system. To lose energy due to equipment issues means losing money. This is why you want to be able to address concerns and issues as soon as possible in order to minimize down time. Time is money, whether you’re the one in charge of a PV system or in charge of keeping it in tip-top shape. A solar installer’s time is valuable because time spent trying to resolve an issue is time not spent finishing up and moving on to the next job. Sometimes it’s faster and easier to just make a phone call when trying to solve a problem without having to sort through product manuals or conduct research on the Internet. Dependable support is a key component of any PV project, and connecting with the right service partner enables you to maximize productivity. Expert advice is just a phone call away in the unlikely event you need assistance with an SMA inverter. Members of SMA’s Sunny PRO Club, a membership-based professional partnership, always get priority technical support when calling 1-888-SMAUSA-0. Trained technical service specialists are available to troubleshoot and provide advice Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
