FROM THE

publisher

Dear Friends, e at “The Valley Wedding Pages” are thrilled to bring you our “Valley Wedding Social & Events” Summer 2012 issue!

It has started out to be a sizzling hot summer, but it hasn’t stopped our “head-overheels” in love couples from officially saying “I Do” this past spring. In this issue you will find sixteen dazzling and marvelous weddings with unique stories and details, including our cover bride Megan Johnson’s sophisticated celebration, a “prescrip-

tion for love”, fiery flamencos, unique Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and a flowing powder pink gown. The stories aren’t over yet; we have nine fantastic couples that tell us their story from how they first met to their excitement about their upcoming nuptials. Read about my personal interview with famed fashion director Randy Fenoli, from “Say Yes

to the Dress”, who attended the “Love is in the Air” wedding event as a special guest speaker! Discover new tips and ideas for having a comfortable and cool wedding in the summer heat, and read interesting myths and facts about “natural” diamonds. Continue to turn the pages

and join Susana Rosser of Dream Weddings in her joyous achievement on featuring her gorgeous linens on “My Fair Wedding”, hosted by David Tutera. Read about the Casas family story, “A Family Affair”, and how their values and loving support helped build The Social Club, a stunning event center. Finally, I am proud to feature my son Jose Oscar “JB” Barrera’s graduation and his wonderful accomplishments as an athlete and as a person. The Valley Wedding Pages continues to expand with this extended summer issue and our online media. Follow us on our Facebook page and our official website for updates on our Fall Launch Party at the newly renovated Rancho Viejo Ballroom on Sunday, September 30, 2012, monthly giveaways, and much more! Randy Fenoli

Interview

Robert Martinez did it again with his exquisite production of “Love is in the Air” the only upscale, Platinum Wedding Event found in the Rio Grande Valley, which was showcased elegantly at the McAllen Convention Center on Sunday, June 10, 2012. Along with one bridal giveaway and delectable hors d’oeuvres, future brides enjoyed seeing top Valley wedding professional proudly display their work and talent. A fabulous runway show introduced gorgeous wedding gowns featured by Sposa Mia Couture. Mid afternoon, Randy Fenoli walked onto the stage and spoke to the enthusiastic audience, discussing his childhood, passion for fashion, and that every “bride is beautiful.” Randy reminded women that they have the power to accept their beauty and take pride in finding their dream wedding dress. He continued to address the large crowd with tips and advice on what it takes to bring out your best features, choosing the right accessories, and making the 12 valleyweddingpages.com

search for that perfect dress less stressful and much more memorable. After his moving speech, Randy had an autograph and photo session with excited guests, offered by Jay Caballero Photography. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Randy Fenoli prior to the event, and he was a charming man who lit up the room with his vivacious personality. Upon our initial meeting, we immediately bonded and soon began talking about his accomplishments, from childhood to the present. Born the youngest of seven and raised on a farm in southern Illinois, Randy took on a fancy for clothing at an early age, thanks to his mother and older sister’s wardrobes. Fenoli entered the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City after high school and immediately realized his fondness for designing eveningwear. It wasn’t long before he discovered wedding

gowns and designed five unique dresses that won him first place in a school competition, the first of many awards and achievements at FIT .Upon winning these awards, Randy received an offer to design for top bridal designers; he was the first student at FIT to land his own label before graduation. “The real prize was having my name on two labels…What a graduation gift!” he said. From then on, Fenoli continued to design his own bridal line for the next ten years, gaining much experience with fabrics and the needs of a bride. Along with designing, Fenoli began working with brides to help them choose their perfect wedding dress. Then, in 2007, Fenoli accepted the position of fashion director at Kleinfeld Bridal in Brooklyn, New York where he assisted future brides with their consultations. His firm belief that every woman is beautiful no matter what size or shape is the key to his eye for true beauty. Kleinfeld is the focus of TLC’s reality show “Say Yes to the Dress”, where Fenoli is a frequent star. We discussed the details of his new book, “It’s All About the Dress”, which was released this past November. It is a wonderful guide for future brides who are searching for their “dream dress”. Fenoli gives great direction for brides who are unsure of their body shape, their budget, or what accessories to wear. His “Randy Rules” are more than helpful and really makes you feel as though he is speaking directly to you. I completed my interview with Randy with this question: “So Randy, ‘When I grow up, I want to be…’?” He responded with “Honey, I’ll never grow up! But I do wish to change the planet for humanity and continue to follow the three “E’s”: Educate Evaluate and Empower!” These three “Randy Rules” are important because they help a bride to not only find the dream wedding dress that they fall in love with and cry happily over, but it gives them a better understanding of their own inner beauty and who they are as a woman. Randy is a charming man who lights up a room with his sweet personality and his wise understanding. Upon meeting him for the first time, he inspires you to really believe that you are beautiful and unique. That is why he makes an amazing Fashion Director and friend because he doesn’t just have a great eye for fashion; he finds the true beauty in every person. Recently, Fenoli is starring in a new TLC special, “Randy To the Rescue”, in which he will bring in a bridal salon on wheels to eight cities across the country and host a special bridal event where he will provide brides with his top tips and great advice for brides-to-be. It is one of the biggest events of his life and he is very excited to meet with all the enthusiastic ladies. The show premiered on TLC on June 15, 2012. Stay tuned and follow Randy’s adventure every Friday at 9 PM. Written by Leticia Guerra Cantu Edited by Alexandra “Lexi” Martinez Photographer: Jay Caballero Photography

organza fabrics make great options for gals on their way down the aisle while guys shine in cotton or linen dress shirts or seersucker jackets for more casual flair. To show off sun-kissed skin without the shine, opt for a primer that does not contain oil or silicone. It will keep make-up in place even when the heat is on. Finally, keep sweaty feet at bay by wearing shoe insoles. Many on the market today are designed for open toe styles and will keep your feet feeling fresh all day long.

Palate Pleasers. Summertime means grilling season and while steaks and burgers are sensational during this time of year, an outdoor bridal party is the perfect opportunity to share a lighter, upscale side of your favorite fare. Think cool appetizers like shrimp cocktails to get the celebration started followed by easy options like grilled chicken or fish. Add in seasonal fruits propped in a variety of chilled glasses and your affair will be the talk of the town. Finally, be sure to relish in refreshing drinks over the course of the affair. From the moment of your bridal debut to the end of the evening, give your guests a chance to partake in everything from iced-tea and lemonade to mojitos and margaritas.

Hardy Details. If fresh flowers will play a big part in your wedding decor, consider hardy varieties that will stand up to the heat and humidity of the day. Roses, hydrangea, daisies, tiger lilies and orchids all have staying power and are available in an array of colors and bloom sizes. Place your preferences on your cake as well or display your sweet treats with the same seasonal fruits served with the meal. Just remember, if your cake will be exposed throughout the reception, opt for resilient choices when it comes to frosting and details. Fondant or a mousseline buttercream, for example, are superb selections when warm weather is a factor.

he Social Club began with a vision to combine the multiple talents and passions of a family. Hector Casas, family patriarch and “The Social Club” founder began his career at an early age. In 1977 he became an accountant for a small real estate firm, his ambition quickly led him to switch professions and become a real estate agent. for the hospitality business, is what started the idea for “The Social Club” so many years ago. During this period Hector and his wife San Juanita were blessed with two children, Arlina Magali and Ector Arian. Arlina enjoyed spending time with her father at work. She grew up listening to his conversations with customers and employees, watching their every move. She began officially working with her parents at Shea Construction in 1996. Shea is an acronym for the family member names: San Juanita, Hector, Ector and Arlina. Hector believed in knowing every aspect of a company, and still does. So, Arlina began filing, running errands, typing out contracts and slowly took on more responsibilities. She became the sales and Marketing Manager and the Interior Designer for the company. In 2000, Ector joined the team and began helping in the construction aspect of the company. He soon took on more tasks and began managing as the Construction Foreman. Shea became a well known company with an excellent reputation. The family was content and felt that after such hard work and so many accomplishments, it was time to follow their passion. The Social Club underwent construction in 2006 and opened its doors to the public in November of 2007; this year it will proudly be celebrating its 5th year anniversary. Hector and Ector assisted each other in the design and construction of The Social Club, while Arlina helped with interior design and purchasing. San Juanita, fondly known as Janie, is always in the background assisting everyone; she is the glue that holds the family together. After its Grand Opening, Ector began managing the restaurant and lounge, while Arlina took care of events and sales; Hector continues to oversee all aspects and details of the business. Running “The Social Club” has become a lifestyle for the Casas family, who in 2009 added a new member with the birth of Arlina’s son, Nathaniel Shea. After the third year the family made a decision to focus all of their talents and resources into specializing in social and corporate events at “The Social Club”. This decision allowed Ector to find his calling as a uniquely fantastic event coordinator and decorator and for Arlina to discover her passion for pastries and the kitchen, which she now runs as the Head Chef. Nathaniel, now at the age of three, likes to consider himself the Social Director and official dessert taster of The Social Club. Hector is now focusing on the overall operations while Janie continues to work “behind the scenes” supporting and holding everyone together. Now the family hosts hundreds of events a year, including weddings, Quinceñeras, bridal showers, etc. Each member carries and exceeds their part in the family, contributing their talents and enthusiasm to the success and happiness of each other.

Background: Omar contacted me last year regarding a diamond for your engagement ring. He told me that he desired a stone that was special and unique, not just another generic or mass-produced diamond. I suggested to Omar that he should seriously consider a "Natural" fancy color diamond instead of a traditional colorless one. One of his primary concerns was that he never wanted you to be sitting with a group of girlfriends and have someone say, "Oh, your diamond is just like mine." This actually happens far more often than you might expect. He wanted something that would forever be truly unique and rare.

Myths: Myth #1: Diamonds are rare.

Diamonds are in fact one of the most abundant gemstones in the world. Consider that nearly every woman in the industrialized world has a diamond or diamonds. This fact contradicts all the marketing propaganda disseminated by the diamond industry claiming colorless diamonds are rare. If they were truly rare, then why can’t consumers re-sell their colorless diamonds for more than pennies of what they originally paid for them?

Myth #2: Real diamonds are all colorless.

It is commonly believed that all diamonds are naturally colorless. This is simply not true. In nature, diamonds exist in every color and color combination imaginable, but with the overwhelming majority being colorless. Diamonds certified with a "natural" color origin have in no way been modified/enhanced by man or laboratory processes. Please do not confuse "natural-color" diamonds with "enhanced-color" diamonds which are frequently found in most retail stores. The term "Enhanced" color is just a more pleasant way of saying fake color. Your diamond is a GIA Certified, "Natural" Fancy Color diamond, meaning that it is exactly the color that God made it. (GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America)

Rarity: Our company motto is "When True Rarity Matters Most." Omar felt that this best represented his feelings for you and described how you guys became a couple. We therefore decided that a natural color diamond was the only acceptable choice. Out of every 10,000 carats of natural diamonds mined from our planet, 1 will be a natural fancy color. So clearly, only a natural fancy color diamond best represents the idea of "true rarity." To give you an idea of the rarity of natural green diamonds, a 1.13 Ct, Natural, and Fancy Vivid Yellowish-Green sold at the Sotheby's Auction in April of 2011 for over $600,000.00/ct. Yes you read correctly, it was only a 1.13ct stone. For comparison, a "D/Flawless" colorless diamond of 1.13Cts is worth only about $25,000.00 today. This clearly demonstrates the difference in rarity and value of a natural fancy color diamond versus the traditional colorless diamonds you find mounted in the mass produced bridal settings at most retailers. As for your particular diamond, your diamond is a GIA Certified, "Natural" Fancy Intense Green-Yellow. Furthermore, your diamond is also certified and graded by Mr. Stephen Hofer who is the world’s foremost authority in "Natural" Fancy Color Diamonds. Very few diamonds ever receive the coveted Hofer Report which your diamond has. I challenge you to walk into a retail store to see if any of their employees have ever even heard of a Hofer Report!

Country of Origin: The country of origin refers to the locality where the diamond was mined. We personally mined your diamond in the country of Sierra Leone located in West Africa. As you know, Sierra Leone suffered from a horrific Civil War during the 1990's and early 2000's funded in part by the trade of conflict diamonds, a.k.a. "blood diamonds." If you have not already seen the movie Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio, you should watch it. It is a very good portrayal of the diamond industry and it was filmed on location in Sierra Leone. Unlike most movies, it is actually a very accurate and historically correct account of the war. Please do not assume though the country is anything like that today. Since the end of the war, Sierra Leone has made a truly remarkable recovery and is now a member of the Kimberly Process Certification Treaty (KPC). The KPC was implemented by the United Nations to track the flow of rough diamonds in order to ensure they have not been used to finance illicit activities. One of the many things that make your diamond truly unique is that you and Omar were able to receive a copy of the Kimberly Process Certificate issued from the Government of Sierra Leone guaranteeing that your diamond was legally mined and exported. This is so very important because diamonds which have been Kimberly Certified ensure that the tax revenue generated by their export will in fact be used to vaccinate children, build school, hospitals, etc.-not fund wars or human atrocities. You should feel good that the purchase of your diamond has directly benefited the people of a third world country, not just some executive in Antwerp or New York. Because I maintain a residency and work permit in Sierra Leone, I can assure you that the country is full of honest and hard working people. People who only want an opportunity to receive a fair days pay in exchange for the diamonds they work so hard to find. We provided the miner who found your stone with the permits and licenses he needed to legally mine di-

amonds on his own lands. Please consider for just a moment what life would be like if the diamond industry did the same thing! There would be hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Africans who could support themselves and their families. It’s been my personal experience that the majority of Africans do not need our welfare or charity! They only need our respect and to be treated fairly in business dealings. The vast majority of them can and will take care of themselves if they are just given the opportunity to do so.

The Ultimate Diamond Experience: Virtually every married woman in America has the exact same diamond story. Either the groom bought a stone on his own, or they went as a couple to pick out her ring at a retailer. It doesn’t matter which path the man chose, the story always has the same ending. Omar wanted something more unique and therefore sought out our Ultimate Diamond Experience. He and his parents made a trip from Texas to Florida to choose a rough diamond from our collection which would be cut and polished exclusively for you. Many of the diamonds that people purchase in jewelry stores (to include all the major retailers) are frequently "after-market" or "recycled" stones. In other words, many are diamonds which have been bought and sold multiple times. Companies who advertise they buy gold and diamonds frequently sell jewelry back to diamond wholesalers and retailers. The retailers then re-market the previously circulated stones alongside newly manufactured pieces. What couple wants a diamond from a previously di-

vorced couple to represent their new life long commitment to one another? Omar definitely did not want this to be a possibility with your stone. A part of the Ultimate Diamond Experience is that we allow our clients to sit down with us and pick out their diamond from the rough. Clients are given the exclusive opportunity to observe and participate in the entire process of cutting their select stone. The diamond Omar chose for you was an octahedral crystal in its rough form. The shape of your rough diamond required that the stone be sawed in half in order to minimize weight loss during the cutting and polishing. Because the original rough stone was sawed into two pieces, this gave Omar the extraordinarily unique opportunity to also get your diamonds “sister stone.” Sister stones are simply two diamonds that were cut from the same piece of rough. Omar not only gave you the solitaire for your wedding ring but also a pendent containing your engagement diamond's sister stone. So imagine how special it will be for you to pass a diamond onto a future daughter or grand-daughter that was cut from the same piece of rough as your wedding diamond! Omar's Ultimate Diamonds Experience even went one step further on the True-Rarity scale. After the rough diamond was selected, not only was Omar allowed to cut and polish on your diamond but so were his parents. I hope the photos of them assisting me in polishing your diamond will become a valued treasure for future generations of your family. I probably shouldn’t admit it, but I am a superstitious man and believe heavily in Karma. If Omar puts half as much effort into your marriage as he did finding your

diamond, you are a very lucky woman. To have also had his parents so involved only speaks to how strongly they must also feel about you spending a lifetime with their son.

Conclusion: Although this is a brief summary of your diamond and Omar's Ultimate Diamond Experience, I hope that you will now have an even stronger bond to your stone. You have something truly unique and more importantly "truly-rare." Sincerely, Daniel Brannon White White Diamonds International

Photography: San Jose Photography A long time ago I asked the Lord to bless me with a man of God that would love me with his whole heart and whom I can share a family with; then Joe came into my life! We have known each other for 8 years and in September 2011, we reconnected, fell in love and the rest is history. On New Year's Eve, Joe took me and my son to the beach to celebrate the New Year together; little did I know that the man of my dreams was going to propose to me. We are so excited to start our journey together and cannot wait to be married in September.

Roland and I met by chance at the gym through mutual friends who set us up on a date, and it turned out to be the best thing that has ever happened to us. A year later on New Year’s Day, while sharing our New Year’s resolutions after dinner, Roland said “For this New Year, I want to be a better man to the women I love, and a best friend to the person that matters the most to me.” He pulled out a little box with a gorgeous ring and got down on one knee. "I love you, and I want to spend my life with you. Will you marry me?” With a shaky breath I said “Yes!” On New Year’s Day 2011, we were engaged!

Even though our families were very close, Lance and I had never before met until October 2009. At the Living Word church in Pharr, Texas where we both attended the funeral of a family friend, I took notice of Lance because of his casual attire. After the service, he asked me out to coffee, and we have been inseparable since. On the night before Thanksgiving 2011, Lance asked me to go back to Living Word, where we had become active members of the church, because he needed to get something he left behind. Once we arrived, Lance got down on one knee and said “Ever since we met I knew immediately that you were the one for me and I want to spend the rest of my life with you”; when he asked me to marry him, I excitedly said “Yes!” In the same church where we first met and got engaged, we will be married as husband and wife on June 23, 2012.

Danny and I were great friends throughout our teenage years; he was even my main escort for my Quinceñera Ball. After years of not seeing each other, we were reunited by our childhood friend. Ever since that day, we have been inseparable! After two wonderful years of fantastic memories, traveling together and having fun with our two dogs, Danny proposed on the dance floor of our favorite dance hall; it was a night that we will never forget. We now look forward to spending the rest of our lives as Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Luna!

Billy planned a weekend trip for us in San Antonio, TX at the historical Emily Morgan Hotel. On our first evening there, he treated me to a beautiful dinner at the Chart House Restaurant in the Tower of the Americas. After dinner, we enjoyed a lovely ride in a horse-drawn Cinderella-like carriage with the beautiful lights of the city surrounding us. Unexpectedly, Billy grabbed my hand, slipped a ring on my finger, and asked me to marry him; I quickly screamed, “Oh my God, YES!” and began to cry with tears of happiness. We then took pictures, called our friends and family and spent the rest of the night celebrating our engagement.

Bernie and I met briefly in the summer of 2006 through a mutual friend. Three years later in October 2009, through the grace of God we met again; this time it was different. We quickly fell head over heels in love for each other and on February 13, 2010 Bernie proposed marriage, which I immediately said “Yes!” with tears in my eyes. We were so deeply in love that we knew we were meant for each other, and now we look forward to spending the rest of our lives together. “What God has joined together, let no man separate.”- Matthew 19:6.

Roel and I met each other for the first time after having cocktails at a lounge bar with some mutual friends. After Roel pursued me for a couple of months, I finally gave in and had dinner with him; I am proud to say my life has changed for the better ever since. One year later, in front of family and friends, Roel got down on one knee and asked me to marry him right before midnight on New Year’s Eve! He stole my heart, so I will soon be stealing his last name and become Mrs. Cruz!

engagements Michelle Castillo & Emmanuel Villarreal June 16, 2012 Photography: flipartimages

Our engagement story begins in the 7th grade when I had a crush on Emmanuel Villarreal. Always the feminist, I got the nerve to ask him to dance at our Brown Middle School dance, to which he said no and ran away. Ten years later, that little middle school had become a symbol of the awakening of our social consciousness and where our journey began to become passionate advocates of our community, for education reform, and to dedicate our careers to public service, Emmanuel meticulously recreated the moment. Brown Middle School's dance entrance was lined with pictures of us from the time we were in middle school to now. As I walked toward the cafeteria I saw our story displayed on the tables - pictures, cards, shirts, things that have come to represent us – while a soundtrack of our story played overhead from an iPod he had setup. Once in the cafeteria, he was standing there waiting for me to have that dance in the spot where he had once left me standing... lined with candles and flowers as Ella and Louis sang "Dream a Little Dream." After our dance, he asked me to spend the rest of our lives together as the epic intro to "Hoppipolla" by Sigur Ros affirmed the moment. Ten years later in that same cafeteria, I said yes and a new journey began for us at Brown Middle School. Thanks to our close family and friends who helped Emmy plan our incredible proposal and kept it a secret from me.

Jose Oscar Barrera, III “For me, my greatest accomplishment was that I was able to lead my fellow team members to achieve our goals while juggling my schoolwork and family. Being able to maintain a good GPA while training and spending time with my family and friends is a big value for me.” Oscar Barrera, known simply as “JB”, has always strived to go beyond his personal goals with as much enthusiasm as possible. Becoming a distinguished athlete, most notably as a thrower in the track and field team at The University of Texas-Pan American has brought many opportunities and goals for Oscar. His sports career began when he attended McAllen High School, participating in the varsity letterman track and field team for three years, as well as playing on the varsity football team his junior and senior years. Receiving a scholarship in track and field to The University of Texas-Pan American was a great accomplishment for Oscar as the university was close to home and he would be able to perform well in his sport. All throughout his college career as a Broncs athlete, Oscar received many awards, medals and acknowledgements for his work and winning spirit: ■ ’08-’09- Bronze medal at the Great West Conference for the Indoor-Weight Throw Event, and a bronze medal in the Outdoor-Hammer Throw Event. ■ ’09-’10-Bronze medal at the Great West Conference for the Indoor-Weight Throw Event, a gold medal in the Outdoor-Hammer Throw Event, and a Conference Champ Award. ■ ’10-’11-Silver medal at the Great West Conference for the Outdoor-Hammer Throw Event; Oscar was recorded the 2nd best hammer throw in UTPA history with 57.99 meters. ■ One of Oscar’s favorite awards was being named “Mr. Bronc” in his senior year by his fellow athletes for being the most spirited athlete for all UTPA sports events. After five years of hard training and dedication to his studies, 86 valleyweddingpages.com

Oscar received his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology on May 12, 2012. Oscar, however, did not walk with his class; he was in Houston, Texas with his track team for the Great West Conference Outdoor Championships, where his fellow male and female team members received points in all events. Oscar not only received his much anticipated degree, but also won a second place finish in the hammer throw and was named National Athlete of the Week in his division. Now graduated with his Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology, and a Minor in Business Administration, Oscar currently works as a camp counselor at The Boys and Girls Club in McAllen, Texas where he has worked for the past 4 years. His next aspiration is to return to university to receive his Masters of Kinesiology with a focus in Exercise Science. Oscar hopes to one day coach a track and field college team. “I’ve always had an interest in health promotion and teaching others about living healthy and happy lives.” It is no doubt that Oscar will continue to succeed as an athlete and as well as a person; we look forward to seeing what comes next in his life. ……..and this is my son. Oscar celebrated his graduation with family and friends with lots of great food and entertainment in a private room at the Buffalo Wings and Rings.

March 31, 2012 Photographer: Sotomayor Photography a Placita in Pharr, Texas came alive on Saturday, March 31, 2012 as thirty-five eligible future brides participated in the First Annual “Diamond Dive” Contest. There were no catches, no gimmicks, just good clean (well not so clean) cake diving fun. The way things worked was that a diamond wedding set valued at $1,000.00 was hidden within a 6’ by 10’ by 3” tall wedding cake and all the eligible future brides had to do was find it. Brides found their way around the cake being cheered on by family, friends and their future spouse and when the countdown began dived in without hesitation and shame.

L

There was cake flying everywhere but amid all cake tossing the thirty-five participants contained themselves and were civil until one jumps up screaming “I got it!” Upon close inspection of the pastry covered ring it was dis-

covered that it was indeed not the actual prize ring but that someone wearing the ring lost it as they searched for the prize. Real bummer. The announcer quickly shouted “The ring is still in the cake!” and within a millisecond the participants dived once again into the heap of cake debris that by this time had no resemblance of a cake at all. Within a matter of minutes the actual prize was found and our congratulation goes to the winner Cynthia Astorga of Brownsville, Texas.
