OVERVIEW: THE RATIO OF SPECIALLY ABLED PEOPLE TO PHYSICALLY ABLED IS INCREASING DAY BY DAY IN INDIA COMPARED TO THE OTHER NATIONS. CENSUS 2001 HAS REVEALED THAT OVER 21 MILLION PEOPLE IN INDIA AS SUFFERING FROM ONE OR THE OTHER KIND OF DISABILITY. THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO 2.1% OF THE POPULATION. AMONG THE TOTAL DISABLED IN THE COUNTRY, 12.6 MILLION ARE MALES AND 9.3 MILLION ARE FEMALES. THERE ARE IN ALL FIVE TYPES OF DISABILITIES. AMONG THE FIVE TYPES OF DISABILITIES ON WHICH DATA HAS BEEN COLLECTED, DISABILITY IN SEEING AT 48.5% EMERGES AS THE TOP CATEGORY. OTHERS IN SEQUENCE ARE: IN MOVEMENT (27.9%), MENTAL (10.3%), IN SPEECH (7.5%), AND IN HEARING (5.8%). (THE TABLE BELOW SHOWS THE COMPARISON BETWEEN ALL THE DISABILITIES IN INDIA.) THE MAIN IDEA BEHIND THE LEARNING CENTER FOR NON-VISUAL IS TO CREATE A CERTAIN SPACE THAT TEACHES THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED TO ENHANCE THEIR OTHER SENSORY PERCEPTION TO EXPLORE AND PROMOTE THEIR OTHER SENSES AND BE ABLE TO DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE AND CONFIDENCE TO LIVE NORMALLY IN THE SOCIETY. TO CHANGE THE NEGATIVE IMPACT AND THE SENSE OF LOSS OF BEING A “BLIND” OR “VISUALLY IMPAIRED” BY TEACHING THEM THE WAY THEY ARE ABLE TO LEARN.

OBJECTIVES:
VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES AND HOW DESIGNERS CAN ADDRESS ALL THE SENSES THROUGH THE USE OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IN ORDER TO ENABLE A VISUALLY IMPAIRED PERSON TO ACCURATELY COMPREHEND THEIR ENVIRONMENT AND GAIN COMFORT FROM IT.
• NORMALIZE THE SCHOOLING ENVIRONMENT • DESIGN IN A WAY FOR BETTER USAGE OF THE OTHER HUMAN SENSES. • STUDY THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IN A HOT AND DRY CLIMATE ZONE.

• •
PROVISION OF APPROPRIATE VENTILATION TO THE DESIGN FOR THE BETTER AND PROPER AIR CIRCULATION INSIDE THE STRUCTURE. STRUCTURE HAVING FLAT ROOFING IS MORE PREFERABLE IN A HOT AND DRY CLIMATE ZONE LIKE AURANGABAD. MORE APPRECIABLE IF THE LIGHT OR PASTEL COLOURS ARE USED TO THE STRUCTURE. PROVISION OF INTERNAL COURTYARD IS PREFERABLE TO THE BETTER AIR MOVEMENT. WINDOW OVERHANGS (DESIGNED FOR THIS LATITUDE) OR OPERABLE SUNSHADES CAN REDUCE OR ELIMINATE AIR CONDITIONING

SYSTEMS USED AND LANDSCAPE CSEB MUD BLOCKS: COMPRESSED STABILIZED EARTH BLOCKS (CSEB), COMMONLY CALLED, PRESSED EARTH BLOCKS, ARE CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL MADE USING DAMP SOIL UNDER HIGH AMOUNT OF PRESSURE TO FORM BLOCKS. THEY ARE COMPOSED OF DRY INORGANIC SUBSOIL, NON-EXPANSIVE CLAY, AGGREGATES AND PORTLAND CEMENT. CSEBS ARE AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVE TO CLAY BRICKS THAT MOST OF THE RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION IN INDIA TODAY USES.
WALLS: USE OF EARTH MATERIALS(I.E. CSEB MUD BLOCKS) FOR WALLS FOR BETTER THERMAL INSULATION IN REDUCING THE THERMAL CONDUCTANCE OR U-VALUE OF WALLS.
FENESTRATION: USE OF BIG WINDOWS AND OPENING FOR BETTER AIR CIRCULATION USE OF EARTHEN JAALI FOR PREVENTING THE HARSH LIGHT TO PENETRATE INSIDE THE BUILDING DIRECTLY. HENCE, CREATING THE PLAYFUL ELEMENT IN THE STRUCTURE.
REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS FROM PARKING FACILITIES: TO LOWER THE HEAT ISLAND EFFECT, CONCRETE OR ASPHALT SHALL BE PROVIDED IN THE OPEN PARKING AREAS. RENDERING THESE AREAS WHITE OR LIGHT IN COLOUR INSTEAD OF BLACK, SO THAT THEY MAY REFLECT A LOT OF SUNLIGHT BACK TO SPACE RATHER THAN ABSORBING IT.
BRICK JALI WALL: A JALI IS COMMONLY USED ELEMENT OF ARCHITECTURE TO COMBAT A HOT CLIMATE. IT HELPS TO CUT DOWN HEAT AND CONTROL LIGHT. THEY STIMULATE AIR MOVEMENTS. THEY LET US SEE OUT BUT NOT BE SEEN. THEY ARE SUPER PICTURESQUE. THEY FOR AMAZING SHADOW PATTERNS.

THESE WINDOWS ARE AN IDEAL ENERGY EFFICIENT CHOICE WITH TH ADDED BENEFIT OF MINIMIZING NOISE. THE SEALED AIR GAP BETWEEN THE TWO PLANES ACT AS AN ADDED LAYER OF INSULATION. THIS ADDED THERMAL RESISTANCE REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF HEAT ESCAPING IN WINTER AND KEEPS MORE CONFORTABLE TEMPERATURE INSIDE.
USE OF RAT TRAP BOND WALL CONSTRUCTION FOR THE BETTER INSULATION PROPERTIES THAT ALSO SAVES 30% ON THE MATERIAL THAT IS USED.
