Project Introduction:

The project investigated issues about liminal zones, and the relationships between archeology, ecology and urbanization across scales. I proposed alternative development scenarios for Xochimilco, and elaborated a comprehensive vision for the future of Xochimilco. Location: Xochimilco, Mexico City DF, Mexico

Liminal Spaces In Anthropology, liminality is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. Liminality is in the in-between state that no longer holds its old status, but has also not yet begun the transition to the new status completely. During the liminal stage, it stands at the threshold. During liminal periods, social hierarchies may be reversed or temporarily dissolved, continuity of tradition may become uncertain, and future outcomes once taken for granted may be thrown into doubt. The dissolution of order during liminality creates a fluid, malleable situation that enables new institutions and customs to generate.

Xochimilco, the Site Xochimilco lies 28 km south of Mexico City. With its network of canals and artificial islands, it testifies to the efforts of the Aztec people to build a habitat in the midst of an unfavourable environment. The lacustrine landscape of Xochimilco, constitutes the only reminder of traditional Pre-Hispanic land-use in the lagoons of the Mexico City basin. In the midst of a network of small canals, on the edge of the residual lake of Xochimilco (the southern arm of the great drained lake of Texcoco), some chinampas or ‘floating’ gardens can still be found. Parts of this half-natural, halfartificial landscape are now an 'ecological reserve'.

Historically, Xochimilco is a city that has always functioned independently of Mexico City. The primary occupation of the local inhabitants of Xochimilco was agriculture based on the chinampas, whose produce of vegetables and flowers, would be transported to Mexico City to support basic life. In 1987, Xochimilco was declared a World Heritage site for this system of chinampas, from the Aztec era. However, rapid urbanization in Mexico City is gradually encroaching upon this World Heritage site, therefore hampering the entire regions including the chinampas, lakes and canals. I believe Mexico City and Xochimilco can interlock and work in tandem with each other, rather than functioning independently, because I believe Xochimilco can be merged as an affiliated part of Mexico City. I propose to recreate Xochimilco as an urban park for recreation and exercise, to support the urban life in Mexico City.

Background

This concept can be actualized by four measures: 1. By increasing building density in the liminal zone that can stop more urbanization from encroaching into Xochimilco. 2. Developing a synthetic gesture in the liminal zone to define the urban area, that can attract higher density buildings and prevent urbanization from encroaching further into the site. 3. Using water as a gap to completely stop urbanization in areas of high conflict in this regard. 4. Exchanging some functions along the liminal zone can create interdepedency between the two cities, which currently function independent and separate of each other. Creating a mix of functions can help bring both cities to work coherently. Through these approaches, I intend to bring Mexico City and Xochimilco together and function with mutual interdependence, which can help benefit the entire Federal District region as a whole.

Project Introduction:

This project recuperates Mexico City’s utopic capacity through the design of a new enclave on the site of the Benito Juarez International Airport. Location: Mexico City International Airport, Mexico City DF

Ciudad Imaginada is an island of its own, formed at the intersection of water, landscape and roads – three networks of urbanism that form its immediate context. The urban grid adapts from the adjacent neighborhood, Aragon; the water extends from Lake Texcoco ecological park and the landscape from Parque Almeda Oriente. The enclave is an urban re-imagination of Mexico City, historically envisioned by the Aztecs as an island on water; and presently, an amalgamation of various styles and elements from diverse cultures. Therefore, the built form of Ciudad Imaginada is on one hand like the culmination of various characters, typologies and architectural styles of the city, as if converging the entire city into one point; and on the other, it is a unique island located in a sea of urban forests, greenlands, water canals and lakes. The built mass intersects with the networks, creating cross-sections of interaction between building form and urban landscape.

Using these two ideas, the enclave repositions a historical Mexico City in the current day and age of urbanization and growth. There are components of nature that evoke references from the past, styles that are present throughout the city even today and projections that re-think population growth and city growth simultaneously. There are cultural, physical and symbolic references from the various colonias that exist in Mexico City today and the areas within the enclave evoke different temporalities of cultures and growth such as organic markets, high-rise towers, technological development, water channels and so on. Eventually, Ciudad Imaginada speaks a dichotomous language reflecting the duality of nature of Mexico City itself: it is a heterotopic situation that evokes Mexico City in different ways and at different times, while remaining an island in the forest cover, away from the expanding urbanization, yet building upon the utopic imagination of the Aztec city.

A four floor affiliate building. With the founction of hotels, offices, garage and retails.

Located in the historic center of Xocimilco, the public market signals the south end of La Viga Spine. In Retail 2003, UNESCO declared Xochimilco Tianguis a World Heritage Site in recognition to the legacy of the chinampas, “one of the most productive and sustainable agricultural systems in the world.� The Mercado de Xochimilco plays an important role in this productive urban waterscape: the flowers and vegetables cultivated in the chinampas populate the stalls in the market, attracting local residents and tourists alike. A must-see stop in the touristic visits to the canals, the market concentrates most of the economic activity in the area, and its surroundings suffer from most congestion all day long. Public The intervention recognizes the Market vibrancy and fragility Tianguis of the market area, and develops a two-fold strategy: (1) build on existing local culture to increase the programmatic offer and transform the tourist base, and (2) transform of the public space network to reorganize traffic flows and reconnect with the local cultural waterscapes.

Designed the theater and office building of China Minsheng Banking Corp., Ltd. (CMSB) The site is located near Shenzhen Government Building, in the vicinity of civic facilities and residential district. Project Introduction: The project is near historic Treme and direct proximity to new developments that will put the neighborhood on a trajectory toward renewed economic prosperity and growth. With many cultural resources in and around the development, the site offers a unique opportunity to attract visitors and residents in the extension of the downtown districts, through the development, and the city beyond.
