Dealing with Sciatica Back Pain Sciatica back pain, although not the most common symptom of sciatica, occurs frequently. The disc bulges to one side, creating pressure on the nerve roots, which can lead to sciatica. Usually, the pain will start to radiate down the back of one leg and in many cases eclipse the initial sciatica back pain. As the disc starts to heal and less pressure is exerted against the sciatic nerve the pain may start to lessen in the leg and relocate into the back. Many health practitioners consider the shift of the focus of pain to be a sign of healing. Taking care of the Back When sciatica back pain is experienced, it is important to not to aggravate it by sitting for long periods of time or to overtax the back by lifting heavy objects. Great care should be used when performing any task that involves the back. Bending over should be done with the knees bent and not from the waist which puts a lot of strain on the lower back. Getting a sufficient amount of sleep is also important for the healing process. People suffering from sciatica back pain should endeavor to find a sleeping position that supports the back. Some people find that sleeping with sciatica pillows used to elevate their hips to be the most comfortable. Others recommend sleeping on their sides with a pillow between the knees to be the most beneficial position. Treatments for Sciatica Back Pain Treating the cause of the sciatica back pain will ultimately aid in speeding the healing process. In the case of the herniated disc, the goal is to decrease the inflammation and decompress the spine. Spinal decompression can be handled in several different ways. The least invasive route is to use gentle stretching exercises to help realign the spine. One of the most common exercises is to lie on one's stomach with a sciatica pillow supporting the hips. Gradually, the upper torso can be lifted, creating more space in the spine. Another method of decompressing the spine is through chiropractic adjustments. Usually multiple treatments are necessary for the realignment to hold. Traction in a physical therapist's office can be instrumental in finding relief from sciatica. In severe


cases, surgery may be necessary to find relief from sciatica back pain. Most episodes of sciatica will run their course over several weeks to several months. If the sciatica back pain has not improved within that time period, it may be necessary to have further testing done to determine the exact cause.
