Office of National Graduate Member at Large I welcome you to Zeta Organizational Leadership (ZOL) conference where learning about your sorority will enhance your leadership skills. It is guaranteed to be informative and filled with information that will make you want to tell somebody what you have learned and make you say, I did not know that! As I continue my journey to each regional conference and numerous state meetings as your national Graduate Member at Large, I realized that there were still many concerns from some of the members. From the National Chaplain’s Desk ZOL “Opening prayer” Loving and Gracious God, Thank you in advance for a successful outcome of our 2015 Zeta Organizational Leadership Training Conference. I pray for the covering and hedge of protection of our International President Mary B. Wright, everyone in leadership in their respectful places and for all Sorority members (graduate and undergraduate) and Amicae (Friends) obtaining certifications, the facilitators, guest and support members. I ask that you bless us abundantly as we continue to seek your wisdom, guidance, courage and strength. Come in and stir up your hope within our hearts and renew our minds with unity and vision. Bless our ZOL Program with your divine intelligence, and help us to make the best use of our own intellect to enhance leadership skills in both Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and in our personal and professional lives. Grant us the humility to always seek your will, be with us in our deliberations and help us to be wise in the decisions we make for the good of all those who have placed their trust and confidence in our leadership. May your goodness and love be present among us and give us insight to lead with integrity so that our decisions may reflect what is right and good. Fill us with your grace and send us Your Spirit, be present among us in the mouths of all who speak, in the ears of all who listen, and at the heart of all we say and do. Give the facilitators and every one receiving certification a fresh supply of strength when they are weary and energize them to fulfill their task. Most merciful God, allow us to grow closer as a sorority and nurture the bonds of our leadership during our ZOL training. We give thanks for the many blessings we receive from you and especially for the gifts of Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood that we do not have to make our journeys alone. May we all be fitting instruments of your grace. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. From the grateful heart of The National Chaplain

From The Desk Of The Meeting Planner …. Stretching Your Budget Dollars Zeta is always having a meeting, workshop or conference at any given time in any given place twelve months out of the year. With regional, state and local meetings, Boule’, National Board Meeting and ZOL you are looking at more than 50 meetings a year – that’s a lot of business for venues wanting to host these meetings. Everybody in the game wants to make or save money, depending on which end of the spectrum you fall. If you are the venue wanting the business from Zeta, you want and have to produce a certain amount of revenue. If you are the group, in this instance Zeta, you want to have a great meeting and spend as less as possible. The Hospitality Industry is big business and they are chumping at the bit for Zeta’s business. However, sometime we need to stop and think about what we can do cut expenses in certain areas. One of the biggest areas for meetings with a huge mark-up is the use of Audio Visual services at a hotel. The average cost of a LCD projector, cart and screen for one day is $450. Some hotels charge more and a few will charge less. Here are some helpful tips on:

   

 

Mercedes Alexander National Meeting Planner

“How to Save Money on Audio Visual” IDENTIFY MATCHING SETS: Put sessions or breakouts that require the same type of seating and A/V in the same rooms so you don’t have to pay for reset costs or additional equipment. LESS SIGNAGE: Prepare meeting room signs listing all meetings in the room throughout the conference to cut down on the number of signs needed. Most hotels have electronic marquees outside of their meeting rooms – use them to post the name of your meeting and time. TEAR DOWN THOSE COSTS: Often Audio Visual companies will charge the same labor fees for tear down as they do for setup. To strike or tear down a room takes less time so remind them that the tear down fees should be half or three-quarters of what setup charges are. WORK WITH OUTGOING GROUPS: Find out what organizations are meeting in the hotel or venue before you and see if you can piggyback off of any of their sets or services. For example, if they are using the same A/V provider or decorator, you might be able to work out a situation where they leave certain room sets, staging and black drape for your event and you foot the bill for dismantle and move-out. BID OUT A/V AND OTHER SERVICES: Consider putting A/V services out to bid. Not always, but in many cases, you can find better deals by hiring an outside A/V provider instead of using in-house A/V. BRING YOUR OWN: It will be cheaper to bring your own LCD projector, flip charts, markers, etc. with you. Most of us are teachers and have some pull with the local school, ask to borrow items needed. It may also be cheaper for you to purchase your own LCD projector. They are very light and portable and cost 1/3 of what it costs to rent one. It will pay for itself with the first use. NEGOTIATE A DISCOUNT: Make sure that an A/V discount of at least 20% or complimentary microphones or flip charts are on your concession list. If you don’t ask for it, they won’t offer.

Remember! When you

Keep in mind! This gives you a starting point for negotiating and keeping cost down for the organization.

start talking with venue, make sure you have a list of concessions you want.

Stay Tuned -

the next time we will talk about the concessions you need to ask for and what the hotel really can do in terms of cutting your cost! GRADUATE

Join the Life Member Club…. Greetings to all the Life Members in Zetadom It has been almost a year since I have had this opportunity to speak to you, but we are back and ready to get moving again. Special thanks to International Grand Basileus Mary Breaux Wright for my reappointment. My new right hand, CoNational Life Members Coordinator is Soror Cora Edwards from the South Central Region. She is a retired educator, and Co-CEO of Toots Florist, located in Brookhaven, Mississippi. At Boule’ 2014, the life members elected Soror La’Kitha Bledsoe Hughes to be the Grammateus. Soror Hughes has a doctorate degree in computer science with an emphasis in communication. She has

agreed to be the editor of the life members’ newsletter, “Zeta Lifeline”. The Zeta Lifeline is tentatively scheduled to be electronically sent to life members by June 30, 2015. One of the features of this upcoming issue will be to highlight our youngest life member from each region. It will be interesting to get to know these young Sorors and their thoughts about life membership in our beloved organization. In addition, at Boule’ 2014, life members agreed to increase incentives and/or bonuses to each status. A complete list of these incentives at each life member level will be listed in the “Zeta Lifeline.

Our goals for the 2014 -2016 year are:  Enact the incentives approved by the life members  Revise the scholarship proposal and application for Archonettes to be presented at Boule 2016 for approval of life members  Develop a fund raiser for life members to fund the Archonette scholarship to be presented at Boule 2016  Implement a Life Members Outreach Program to reclaim inactive life members  Issue volume three of the Zeta Lifeline  Continue regional life members business meetings

“Promoting Scholarship and Community Service …. to the Highest Degree” It seems like this school year went really fast, at least at my school, East Valley High School in North Hollywood, CA. But during that time I have packed a lot of Zeta into August through June. From Boule in July National Officers have hit the ground running… It was an honor for me to represent our beloved sorority as a voting delegate at the National Council of Negro Women Convention in Maryland. “Conventioning” with Grand Wright is no joke. We attended every meeting, workshop, reception and banquet on time for the entire conference! Zeta National Educational Foundation (Z-NEF) Transition and Board of Managers Meeting was informative and power packed with information for the new board. Did you know that the National Second Anti-Basileus is represented on two boards? In January representing Z-NEF at the National Executive Board Meeting gave me the opportunity to collaborate on an informative report to the board with New Chair of Z-NEF Dr. Alice Garrett. We presented together on the status, goals and new face of Z-NEF.

Bibliana L. Bovery M.A. National Second AntiBasileus

The scholarship window for applications to Z-NEF starts September 1st and closes February 1st of each year. I am now in the process of reviewing applications from the USA and all over the world. Each week I have addressed inquiries from students interested in our scholarships and fellowships. I decided to take on this function to relieve headquarters staff from the task of responding to questions so they can focus on operational business. There are other duties as assigned. I have had the pleasure of Co-Chairing a National Committee with Soror Pat Jones, National Graduate Member at Large. You will hear more about our work as it takes shape. Speaking of collaboration, stay tuned to a workshop I have been working on for National Membership Month lead by National First Anti-Basileus Soror Valerie Hollingsworth in June. Before I end the year… May was National Educator Month. Have you hugged a teacher, cheered an administrator, high-fived a School Psychologist/Support Staff lately? Let’s give them kudos for the hard work that they do educating and supporting students and families, often with low wages and little accolades. They are the real Heroes and if a Zeta Sheroes in our midst.

Let’s Honor Our Founders By Honoring Scholarships As We Journey to “Centennial—2020” I have been elected by the California Teachers Association and my local union to represent my

state at the National Education Association (NEA) Convention this summer in Orlando, CA. The “RA” as the meeting is called is the largest sitting democratic meeting in the world. Yes our collective Unions are powerful. For the first time in history its leadership is female, with the President being a dynamic Latina. I am a member of the recognized Divine Nine Caucus of NEA. Yes, we have a sub-group just for the NPHC Greeks. We plan to take a stand for social justice so… stay tuned for posts and tweets from the RA floor. The Z-NEF will hold our annual

board meeting at ZOL this year so I hope to meet and greet you there. The sorority will be briefed on a new community service program for Z-NEF after that meeting “Healthy Choices for a Brighter Future” may be coming your way next year. Don’t miss a once in a lifetime historic event, Zeta Day in Hannibal, Celebrating the life and legacy of Founder and President Emeritus Arizona Leedonia Cleaver Stemons August 7-9, 2015 hosted by the Midwestern Region. I have had the pleasure of working with this passionate committee on a Zeta Art Exhibit for the event. We hope that every Zeta will be a part of honoring our founders as we journey to Centennial 2020! Congratulations to the spring 2015 graduates! Best wishes and God Bless you in your academic and professional pursuits. Let’s continue “Promoting Scholarship and Community Service to the Highest Degree” GRADUATE

2020 “CENTENNIAL” Launch Party At GLR Conference Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Great Lakes Region Mary Breaux Wright – International Grand Basileus May 2015 The GREAT LAKES REGION hosted its 81st annual regional leadership conference at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois, April 2326, 2015. We had record setting attendance with 779 from across the seven (7) states of: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The conference led by Great Lakes Regional Director Michelle Porter Norman encompassed workshops, training sessions and focused meetings that provided knowledge to the women of our sisterhood. After all “A good Zeta is a well-informed Zeta!” In support of our National community service initiative, the Great Lakes Region partnered with service agencies: Pillars, Vivian Carter Senior Apartments and Featherfist, transitional Interim housing facility. The region awarded $4500 in scholarships and contributed $5900 to the NEF.

Michelle Porter Norman Great Lakes Regional Director

The oldest African-American Newspaper in Illinois, The Chicago Defender, covered our opening ceremony. Not only did we have a full page layout in the newspaper and on the website, a special interview with International Grand Basileus Mary Breaux Wright, 20th Past Grand Basileus Jylla Moore-Tearte, Great Lakes Regional Director Michelle Porter Norman and Soror Frances Faithful, daughter of our beloved founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful and niece to our beloved founder Viola Tyler Goings. This interview was not only the first of its kind, but it was an historical event that is sure live on in Zeta for many years to come. A genuine highlight of the conference was the Great Lakes Region 2020 Centennial Launch Party. Sorors were able to acquire a piece of Zeta history by visiting with the trailblazers and leaders to get stamps in their Centennial Passport Book. With stamps provided from Grand Wright, Past Grand Tearte, Regional Director Porter Norman, Soror Frances Faithful and all the Past Regional Directors; the launch party gave Sorors the opportunity to kick back for a relaxing moment outside of Zeta business. Great Lakes Region: Highlights of Champaign, Illinois

Theta Lambda Zeta (TLZ) chapter in Champaign-Urbana has had a “blazing year”! We are pleased to share highlights of the chapter and youth groups. Membership success! Five new members (MIP)—Ratisha Carter, Camilla Fulton, Katrina Kindle, Jeniece Mitchell, and Diane Phillips; five reclaimed sorors—LaTanya Cobb, Gennifer Gilbert, Angela Hassell; Andrea Jackson and Tanisha Taylor; and two transfer sorors—Reland Carter and Mallory Robertson all made it possible for more TLZ power to deliver Zeta service in our communities.

The following sorors presently serving are: Soror D’wania Turner, Illinois State Youth Coordinator; Soror Geraldine Peeples, State Nominations Chair; Soror Demetria Candler, Recommendations Chair; Soror Geraldine Peeples, Regional Scholarship Chair; and Soror Geraldine Peeples, Regional 2020 Visionary Advocate. TLZ also shares that it has contributed financially to National programs and initiatives. Programs included Eldercare Initiative, Adopt-a-School, Z-HOPE, Cancer Walk, and March of Dimes. The first State of Illinois Day of Service saw TLZ sorors preparing a home cooked Christmas meal for youth in the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center who would otherwise have gone without. The sorors also collected clothing and gifts for men in the TIMES homeless shelter.

Figure 1: 2014 MIPs

Scholarship highlights! TLZ awarded $4500 in academic scholarships to high school graduates and University of Illinois undergraduates. By partnering with the University, the undergraduate scholarships were matched by a college department. TLZ also initiated a Blue and White scholarship in honor of TLZ’s Triumphant Sorors—Carla Z. Peeples and Charter Member Valerian A. Summerville with donor funds from sorors to recognize high school students of active sorors and auxiliaries. An Archonette, Aliya Savage, received the first award. Leadership service! TLZ is proud to acknowledge the chapter members who provide outstanding leadership not only in the chapter, but also State, Region and National levels.

THE HISTORY OF THE DOVE In early 1988 Soror Aldonia Curry Chappell shared ideas concerning the dove as a National symbol or collectible for our sorority. Delta Phi Zeta Chapter agreed with the idea and suggested we contact the proper sources because the dove already appeared on our shield. The dove somehow evolved as a symbol of Zeta, but it was not an “official” national symbol. Several contacts were made with the ARCHON Editor--Soror Doris Stokes, Cincinnati, OH, and Soror Virginia Hansberry--Historian, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The historian researched the shield and the dove. We were advised to bring our proposal to the Executive Board at the 70 th Anniversary Boule’ held in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 15, 1990. After almost two years our proposal was indeed on the agenda—but not without opposition. Some sorors were in favor of the kitten as a collectible. After a lot of negotiating in the early morning hours our proposal was accepted and became a reality! In 1990 the Dove became the official national symbol for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Soror Eunice S. Thomas was Grand Basileus at the time. Delta Phi Zeta Chapter, Dayton, OH, is dubbed as the “Dove Chapter.” The following message appeared in the spring/summer 1988 ARCHON: The Dove As A Collectible Delta Phi Zeta Chapter, Dayton, OH, thinks that our Sorority should have the symbol of peace, a dove as an official collectible item. What do you think? What about the kitten? Write to the ARCHON and share your thoughts about an official national symbol. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. FIVE PEARLS Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1920 on the campus of Howard University of Washington DC. It was within this environment that five coeds had a vision for a sorority. They wanted to form a sorority which would have a direct impact upon society to encourage positive changes, outline a plan of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness amongst the black communities, inspire the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and promote unity among its members. These women believed that a sorority should not emphasize socialization and superiority but address society’s moral values, problems, prejudices, and poverty is sues affecting humanity in gener al but

UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP FOR THE 21st CENTURY

Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks ZOL Steering Committee National Director of Undergraduate Advisors Associate Vice President & Director of Athletics at Chicago State

If you are like most of us, you have read numerous books and articles on leadership. Leadership literature can be found in all disciplines. Leadership was once thought to be an innate quality — people are either born to be leaders or they are not. Throughout time it has become apparent that excellent leaders for some tasks are poor leaders for others. What is the essence of leadership? What sets leadership apart from other human processes? Leadership is simply this: First, it’s knowing how to chart a course, to give others direction by having a vision of what can be. A team or organization without a leader is like a ship without a rudder. Second, leader ship is developing the social and psychological environment or organizational culture. This culture consists of selecting, motivating, rewarding, retaining and unifying members of your team or organization. Excellent leaders give the team or organization vision and know how to translate this vision into reality. Leaders seek to develop an environment whereby each and every member has the maximum opportunity to achieve success and in doing so achieve organizational success. Leadership formally defined, is the action of an individual to influence others toward set goals. It is often confused with management. Management consists of planning, organizing, staffing and recruiting, scheduling, budgeting and public relations. Leaders perform all of these functions, or delegate them to others, but they do more. Leaders determine the direction for the future, and then marshal the resources within the organization to pursue that vision. Managers simply handle the routine never questioning whether the routine should be done. Too many organizations are over-managed and under-led. To be an excellent leader you must develop excellent psychological skills, especially the interpersonal

skills to move people to action. Communication skills are essential — talking, listening, pleading, arguing, negotiating, encouraging and consoling. I subscribe to the “great woman” theory of history. Individuals who exert leadership make a difference. Excellence in or ganizations is a pr oduct of super ior leader ship by individuals who have acquired specific skills that give them both vision of a future that can be obtained and the ability to commit people to pursue that future. Excellence doesn’t just happen. It comes from preparing yourself to lead and working hard when leading. It is said that people can be divided into three classes:   

The few who make things happen The many who watch things happen And the vast majority who have no idea what happened.

Researchers in the helping professions have learned that empathy is the most vital quality for success. In my view, it is the most important quality that distinguishes outstanding leaders from less effective ones. The seed of empathy is genuine caring; its soil is communication skills, especially listening skills and its sunshine is helping.

Soror Susan Daniel stationed in Singapore

Military Women Across the Country & Overseas

The challenge for her has always been her career and her dedication to serve the sisterhood and actively participate with local chapters. Soror Daniel has been working in International Aviation Security with the Department of Homeland Security for over 12 year s; with a career that has provided her with the opportunity to travel and see the world. Her professional travel has led her through Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North and South America. She is cur rently stationed in Singapore, an island citystate off southern Malaysia and north of the equator. Her current position affords her the opportunity to travel throughout Asia and the Pacific Islands; however the Korea and Japan Chapters are still too far from her home in Singapore to consider them as a viable home chapter. Over the years, she has joined several chapters: Sigma Eta Zeta, Long Beach, California; Nu Xi Zeta, Alexandria, Virginia; Mu Theta Zeta, Kaiserslautern, Germany; and Omicron Beta Zeta, Arlington, Texas. The ability to become a Graduate Member is invaluable; allowing her to stay connected to the sisterhood, active and current on Zeta initiatives and training opportunities. She also has the opportunity to join webinars and hear information first hand.

Zetas ~ Making it Happen I became a Zeta at Syracuse University in the fall of 1994 while I was living in Bethlehem, PA. After chartering and commuting for numerous years to Sigma Kappa Zeta chapter in Brooklyn, NY, it became overwhelming with my work and family life. It was not an easy decision to become a graduate member at large but it worked best for me until a new chapter opens here.

This year Sisterhood, Service, and Social Action has made Psi Beta Zeta Chapter standout in community and the surrounding areas. Psi Beta Zeta Chapter of Southaven, Mississippi has had an amazing year including “Celebrating our 5th Chartering Anniversary” on March 4, 2015. Plus on May 17th this chapter will also be a charter member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council of DeSoto County. Committed & Positive Role Model For Youth Kim Mayfield Zeta of the Year 2014-2015

Youth Coordinator & Advisor New Life Christian Center Hospitality Ministry

All things Are Possible Through GOD

When I became an active Zeta, I made a choice to live up to the principles of Zeta and not just wear some pretty colors. I embody service, sisterhood, scholarship and finer womanhood. I am a member of Zeta of Zeta Upsilon Zeta Chapter where I am currently serving as Grammateus and Youth Coordinator. I have served on every committee that we have in the chapter since joining. I had the privilege and honor of being one of the key people that made sure that the International Grand President’s, Mary Wright, visit to Holly Springs, MS was comfortable and enjoyable. I catered the banquet for the Founder’s Day program on that year. I am at every chapter event, representing with the utmost dignity and class. I respect my sisters, both young and old, and I treat them as such. This has afforded me many wonderful friendships and bonds that I will cherish always. I am not just one to hold a space on a committee or position, I am one who works. I am one of three that shows up for highway clean every quarter. I am there for the setup and clean up committee, and the stuff in between. I’ve always believed that the best leader is the best follower. Starting off as the Youth Advisor and then Youth coordinator has afforded me, my greatest satisfaction. I thought we worked hard as Zetas, but to keep Youth interested and engaged, you have to keep them busy. Our youth thrive on community service projects and their reward is the gratitude and smiles of the recipients. And for this I make it my personal mission to show them how much we appreciate them for all they do. They make Zeta Phi Beta, Incorporated look good, so we should do our part in keeping them motivated. They are our legacies, our futures. The youth advisor and I have overseen the youth on the following: Alex Lemonade Stand – Raised money for childhood cancer by setting up a booth and selling lemonade and cookies. Passed out information on the research. March of Dimes –Bucket drop and awareness board complete with pamphlets and flyers. NICU Boxes for the Regional Medical Center in Memphis – Colorful and creative boxes were made to hold food item for four families with children in the neonatal unit during the Thanksgiving Holiday. The children donated can food items and decorated the boxes. Stepping for change Youth Showcase: Anti-bully awareness – a yearly performance event hosted by our youth auxiliaries that showcases area talent and our youth groups. The theme of the show is Antibullying. The youths create posters that hang around the venue and pass out literature on antibullying. Some of the acts incorporate the theme into their routine. Thanksgiving Baskets to needy families – 2 baskets have been given to families in the community during the Holiday. The items were donated by the youth and given during youth showcase. Can Food Drive for New Hope Village – The homeless shelter pantry sent out word to the community that they were in need of help, and our youth accepted the call. They collected over $100 in canned and non-perishable food item. Trinity Mission Health & Rehab Holiday gift and song, Holly Springs, MS. For the last 2 year s the children have been doing a sock drive where they take the resident a pair of socks and sing Christmas carols. This year they partnered with graduate chapter and also provided coloring books, activity books, and crayons. Archonettes were Santa’s elves at the Breakfast with Santa for the HS Primary School – The young ladies attended to the children, and passed out treat bags that they had help create. Read around the Christmas tree – Archonettes: The young ladies went to Pr imar y school and r ead to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders during the school’s annual program. Yearly Health Fair & Autism Walk – This is a yearly walk and health fair hosted by the youth auxiliaries that raises money and awareness for Autism. Money raised has been used to send kids to Autism camps for the last 4 years. This year, 2015, we tripled the money we raised and doubled the amount of people attending the event.

Blazing New Paths ~ Through Strategic Leadership

“He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” Psalms 40

The Beauty of SISTERHOOD is the Camaraderie & Teamwork that goes hand in hand.

With the thousands of books on effective leadership, the singularity of applying a particular style of leadership can be problematic in the evolution of an organization. There may be instances where the immediate needs of an organization require transactional leadership over transformational leadership, or when servant leadership needs to be supplemented with strategic leadership. One of the most memorable ideas regarding leadership comes from CEO and author Stan Slap, “Here’s what you need to know most about leadership: Lead your own life first. The only thing in this world that will dependably happen from the top down is the digging of your grave.” We are reminded of this as well in Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.” Leadership demands an existential duality; the ability to be a visionary and follower of orders, to serve as a catalyst for change or also a loyalist to legacies when needed, and seeker of wise council with a strong spirit of discernment of the motivations of council. Zeta Organizational Leadership is a strong first step to building those leadership skills. Psalm 40, tells us, “He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth,” and verily the path after ZOL training mirrors this. As a first year Basileus, I have fallen back on my training from ZOL to serve as a leader in my local chapter, Rho Mu Zeta in Clarksville, TN. In the 16 years since my chapter’s charter, we have grown to a comfortable 25 members, and for many years we have been loyal to the legacy of being a mid-sized, 10-25, chapter, but the call of progress has become “our new song.” Breaking down the door to the 26-49 chapter size, came with purposeful and strategic initiatives to increase engagement, chapter visibility, and chapter infrastructure to sustain continual growth. Our new song harmonizes with that of Nationals, an ensemble of engagement initiatives encouraged by our First Anti Hollingsworth, and strategic syncopation between Madame Grand Wright’s strategic planning goals and our own. In so doing, we have been able to

quadruple the amount of scholarship money given, exponentially increased our ZHope activities and corresponding points, but most importantly bring home more Sorors to Zeta. This new path of course has not been clear of debris or challenges, as will any organization the Erin Lynch-Alexander, commitment comEd.D — Chapter Basileus fort is a power ful one. Individuals fear change for the same reason they fear progress, because of the uncertainty that comes with it. Can we maintain this level of productivity? What happens if we don’t meet our goals? But the beauty of sisterhood is the built in comradery, and the team work involved. Romans 15:1 tells us, “We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” As a chapter we have demonstrated this through supporting each other’s committees toward the execution and implementation of the chapter strategic plan. Our greatest accomplishment has been to increase the intellectual capacity of our chapter, with r eclaimed Sorors which comes new skills sets/ talents that can maximize the work of the chapter. Zeta Organizational Leadership training has tallowed us to blaze new paths through planning, goal setting, and sisterly support.

Southern Region: West Texas State Director It is an honor to greet you as the West Texas State Director. I am humbled to have received the charge from International Grand Basileus, Mary Breaux Wright, to lead such dynamic and diverse Sorors, Amicae and Youth. As some may know, the state of Texas is divided into two parts, East Texas and West Texas. Most of our chapters are west of Interstate Highway 35 with a few just east of the highway. The distance between the two chapters that are furthest apart is 700 miles; with that said our part of the state covers a lot of ground. I have enjoyed being a part of the Southern Regional Leadership Team led by Southern Regional Director Kay Jones Rosebure. I work beside two awesome State Directors, Gwendolyn M. Oquendo, East Texas State Director and Christine Stringer, Louisiana State Director. I appreciate having an International Grand Basileus and Regional Director that are forward thinking and allow us to explore new avenues of engaging with the membership.

Soror Rhetta Washington McCoy West Texas

One of the unique things about the Southern Region is that our states operate without State Executive Boards. Because of this, I wanted to ensure that I formed a working relationship with the Area Coordinators, Osariemen Osaghae (Area I) and Gennifer Cowan (Area II), and Basilei as they are our West Texas leadership. We have established quarterly Basilei Conference calls that allow us to stay connected, discuss upcoming initiatives, and provides each Basileus an opportunity to share information about her chapter’s activities and programs. One of the highlights of my tenure was the approval of our first West Texas Workshop in October of 2014. Prior to this we would host Area Workshops in each of the two areas within our state. The West Texas Workshop brought both areas together, allowing the sorors and Amicae of West Texas to meet as one. I am happy to say that our first state-wide workshop, hosted by Delta Upsilon Zeta and Nu Iota, was a great success. We had over 200 sorors and Amicae come out for a day and a half of fellowship, sisterhood and learning. Our state workshop opened with a chapter showcase allowing chapters to tell their history using their own unique and creative style. We had a full day of workshops and training and launched a state-wide initiative with the Texas Adult Protective Services (APS). This initiative provided over 120 basic needs packages to seven APS resource rooms. The resource rooms are stocked with basic needs items that APS specialists can provide to the elderly or disabled, when necessary, during home visits. The state workshop was a great start to the sorority year and helped to set the tone for the remainder of the year. Other state-wide initiatives included Freedom Sunday 2014, March of Dimes stories, a Membership Challenge, and an annual fundraiser. Freedom Sunday was an initiative across the state of Texas encouraging all residents to vote in the October 2014 elections. This initiative also marked the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Freedom Sunday. West Texas chapters, along with East Texas chapters, participated in the Freedom Sunday social media campaign and shared the Freedom Sunday literature within their communities. During Prematurity Awareness Month we put the spotlight on sorors and their families who had a March of Dimes story to tell. These stories were shared with all of the chapters and posted to our Facebook page. Our membership challenge encouraged all West Texas sorors to “Give Me Five” by reclaiming and/or recruiting five sorors. West Texas is excited to say that it has seen its membership grow by 10% over the previous year. In West Texas, we are doing our part to support the needs of our International Headquarters. Last year we launched our WTX Zetas “bling” t-shirt fundraiser; 100% of the proceeds went to the capital campaign. We continue to show our WTX Zetas spirit and support our International Headquarters by adding WTX Zetas jewels to our fundraising efforts. We will go where others won't; we will lift, we will elevate, and we will inspire! GRADUATE

The Region is committed to the promotion and implementation of the National Programs of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated©, and does so, with heart, as each member state works to move forward the National agenda as put forth by International Grand Basileus, Mary Breaux Wright. The Region has implemented a Zeta Day at the Capitol Legislative event in each of its states, along with Founders’ Day phenomenal programs with statewide celebrations and in some areas, parades. The Region proudly celebrates its connections with and to its graduate and undergraduate Sorors; its Military members; Amicae; Youth Auxiliaries, and its Male Network, as it continues making gr eat str ides in r egional growth. Programmatically, “Boots on the Ground “has served well in the state of Georgia, as it worked to collect more than 600 wigs for cancer patients. South Carolina’s Day at the Capitol has received statewide acclaim, with our own Representative Robinson, presenting the Proclamation on the floor of the House. Florida and the Bahamas salute its Youth, in grand style, with more than One Hundred and Sixty-two Youth in attendance at its recent Youth Conference. The US Virgin Islands’ emphasis on Youth became an event to remember, with the Awards Program being Nationally Televised. The Region also celebrates the fact that it is the birthplace of Founder Fanny Pettie Watts and inter nationally r ecognized American Folklorist, Anthropologist and Author, Zora Neal Hurston. The Southeaster n Region, hailed as the home of Zetas’ First Storks Nest, the home of the Sor ority’s internationally recognized and hailed Z-HOPE initiative, is now also the home of the fir st Female Pr esident of Florida’s A & M University, Soror Elmira Mangum and the St. Croix State Superintendent of Education, Soror Colleen Mae Williams (former St. Croix State Director). We are the Southeastern Region, of our esteemed sisterhood; every Soror, every Amicae, every Youth, every Male Network Member, every Associated Community Agency, understands that we are on this journey together. We look forward to seeing the other fantastic members of our Blue and White Family, in July of 2016, when we will host the Boule’ in Orlando, Florida embracing the Centennial Founding of our beloved Sorority. GRAND Signs Wildlife Sanctuary Partnership

Action Speaks Louder Than Words!!

Steve Guertin deputy director of the US Fish and wildlife Service (Service) and the GRAND signed a 5-year agreement during the ZOL Training which 900 Zetas leaders attended. The partnership is similar to last year’s MOU between the Service and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.. The partnership provides an opportunity to reach youth in our communities and to involve them in recreation on national wildlife refuges and to help them understand how such activity promotes healthful living , which is one of Zeta’s health initiative , “Zetas Have Heart”. In addition, it enhances the opportunity for young people to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and to give Zetas a greater voice on conservation issues. Hopefully, the partnership will encourage African American students and professionals to consider Service careers. The Grand gets involved to help urban youth learn about the national world, biological sciences and to enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation. The partnership allows for Zetas and the Service to work cooperatively to explore more possibilities for healthful activity in nature. Zetas have enriched the lives of women, children and the communities in which we live since its inception in 1920.

From the Desk of Editor-in-Chief National “Graduate Gathering” Greetings To My Blue & White Family, The ZOL Edition of the GRADUATE GATHERING was not able to be released earlier due to family issues and life changing situations that needed my immediate attention. In addition, I experienced the loss of my father whom I had a very close bond with. It was a very difficult time for me but I had my family, friends and especially my sorors to rely upon. Although we miss our loved ones we know they are in a better place. I received phone calls, emails and cards on behalf of my family. However, I will never forget the great compassion shown to me by my sorors. Having a strong faith in GOD gave me the strength to move forward in life. I would like to thank all of my sorors who were there for me in my time of need. Your prayers were greatly appreciated. Soror Patricia E. Jones has r eleased the “ZOL” Edition of the GRADUATE GATHERING for your pleasur e. I hope you enjoy the articles and pictures that were provided by our sorors.

In regards to the ZOL Conference, I hope you all had a great time and enjoyed the speakers, work sessions and gained a lot of valuable information to share with other sorors and Amicae. The ZOL Confer ences offer ed leadership skills and memor able exper iences as well as camaraderie, amongst fellow Zetas and Zeta Amicae. I hope you all left the 2015 ZOL conference equipped to utilize all of the leadership training and resources that you received. For me, it was an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. As 2015 comes to an end and we approach a new year, I’d like to thank all of the Soros for the hard work and dedicated service that you have given to your communities and our sorority. Even though some of us have undergone life changing experiences (good & bad), loss of loved ones and various hardships, I pray that you stay strong and committed not only to yourselves and your families, but to the sorority as we move into 2016! I would like to thank everyone who submitted articles for this newsletter. I especially would like to thank my hard-working sister, Soror Patricia E. In Psalm 78:72, our Lord shares these words on leadership: “ So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.” Wonderful, marvelous, & patient Father God, we come thanking you for this opportunity to learn how to become a more effective and spiritually healthy leader. We thank you for our ZOL gathering. Some of us came with little or no leadership experience, but now we leave with meaningful ZOL experiences. This experience has empowered us to become more effective and spiritually healthy leaders. Others came with leadership skills due to our past leadership experiences. But they too leave ZOL with a fresh outlook on leadership. And you remind us in II Timothy 3:14-17 the importance of continued learning when you said, “But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them.” So Daddy, I ask that you would encourage my sisters as they work to help and empower others. Please guide their gifts, minds, hearts, and words in such a way that they empower, bless, uphold, and build up those they are called to lead. Let them learn from their easy, as well as their challenging experiences. My sisters, as you practice your ZOL skills, please remember to lesson for and obey God’s voice. Seek His voice and guidance in all that you do. And finally, I ask that they respect the responsibility and accountability woven into being a spiritually healthy willing leader. In closing sweet and awesome God, thank you for our International President, Soror Mary Wright and her team, who have a heart for empowering and developing strong, healthy, and determined women leaders. Please continue to bless, educate, and empower their own ZOL skills, as they prepare a new generation of ZOL soldiers to serve the voiceless, lose, hurt, and disconnected of the world.Traveling safety, mercy, and grace to all ZOL participates in the loving name Jesus, who is our Lord and Savior.
