On behalf of the team here at TECH, I would like to wish you all a very happy and exciting year ahead. Whew, time sure does fly. For the most part the past 12 months have been quite uneventful – although not in the world of technology. People will remember 2011 for a lot of reasons. But one thing that will definitely pop into their minds is the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Oman heralded the end of 2010 with the Oman World Fireworks Championship and the Asian Beach Games. Well, the end of 2011 was quite ordinary. But the beginnings of this new year is going to be filled with exciting new launches, thanks the international Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to be held in the middle of January. The CES sets the trend for the entire year. And we have had a sneak peek at some of the new launches, and let me reassure you that 2012 will not disappoint. In this issue we have given a special insight into the world of Blu-ray players, along with info on the currently available models in town. There are quite a few surprises in this issue – products that you will be forgiven for lusting after, like i’m Watch, a beautifully designed smartwatch, the new Microsoft Surface that was rumored about at the CES 2011 and Little Printer, a cute gadget that does exactly what the name suggests. This issue has everything to keep you occupied this month. So enjoy and wishing you all a very happy, ‘TECH’y 2012. Look forward to our CES special in Feb. We promise it will be totally fab. - Ed

Dear TECH,

Hi,

What’s the difference between USB 2.0 Full Speed and USB 2.0 High Speed in a camera?

I heard that the iOS 5 on the iPhone and iPad has new wireless sync features. How do I set it up?

Regards, Nasra

Thanks, Rajeev

Dear Nasra, Dear Rajeev, Lots of cameras claim to have USB 2.0, but read the specs carefully before you get too excited. As you mentioned, there are two types of USB 2.0: Full Speed and High Speed. USB 2.0 Full Speed tops out at 12Mbps, which is the same speed as the ‘old’ USB 1.1 standard. What you really want is USB 2.0 High Speed. This protocol has a transfer rate of 480Mbps, which is 40 times faster than USB 2.0 Full Speed. And that makes a huge difference when you’re transferring 2 to 4MB images to your computer. - Ed

Dear TECH, My car has an oversized factory radio. Why can’t I replace it with an oversized aftermarket receiver? Varsha Dear Varsha, ‘Oversized’ receivers come in two different sizes: the three-inch tall (or DIN-and-a-half) slot found in many GM/Chrysler vehicles, and the four-inch tall (or Double-DIN) opening in some Japanese vehicles. If the dimensions of your car’s dash opening differ by even a fraction of an inch, you won’t be able to install the oversized aftermarket radios. In some vehicles, the bracket system that holds the factory radio in place won’t work with an oversized aftermarket receiver. We recommend installing a standard DIN-sized radio with a mounting kit. - Ed

To get started, make sure you’ve synced your iOS 5 device with your computer via cable at least once. Also make sure you allow iTunes to wirelessly sync with your device by selecting ‘Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi’. From here on out, you should be able to sync the device wirelessly. First, make sure your computer is connected to a wireless network and is running iTunes. The Dear editor, What is the difference between DJ and regular headphones? Ahmed Dear Ahmed, DJ headphones are made with the specific work conditions of a disc jockey in mind, but that does not mean that music lovers can’t enjoy their enhanced features as well. Consumers looking for a new pair of Hi TECH team, What is VoIP? How does it work? Sabah al Balushi Dear Sabah, VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the

device needs to be plugged in to initiate Wi-Fi Sync, so make sure you connect it to a power source via dock or power adapter. Having a portable charger or an extended battery attached to your device should also do the trick. Then open the Settings menu by tapping the button on your iOS 5 home screen. Navigate to General, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. At this point you should see a list of all computers available on the Wi-Fi network. Select the computer you want to sync with, and tap the Sync Now button. - Ed headphones might appreciate the advanced features that DJ headphones have to offer. DJ headphones provide superior sound quality compared to most regular headphones. They tend to faithfully reproduce low and high range frequencies of a song. There are some regular headphones that are very lightweight and comfortable, but they can become bothersome after a few hours. Comfortable headphones are essential for DJs as they are worn for hours at parties and events. DJ headphones cancel out outside noise. Although, some consumer headphones may have noise cancelling features. - Ed signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. VoIP can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. In addition, wireless ‘hot spots’ in locations such as airports, parks and cafes allow you to connect to the Internet and may enable you to use VoIP service wirelessly where allowed. - Ed

Buttons are integrated into the sides of the handle allowing users access to it via their thumbs while still maintaining a grip on the handle. So far games like shooting, pinball, Tetris and free-kick have been suggested as quick and simple games that passengers could play during the commute. Unfortunately it’s just a concept for now.

T

he sleek, stylish soundbar home theatre system from Panasonic enhances audio without a lot of hassle or clutter. The SC-HTB520 combines a slim-line soundbar with a separate subwoofer. The compact soundbar uses a stainless mesh speaker net material with a mirror coating, allowing you to see the speaker unit inside. Twin treble units and mid-range drive units give this soundbar exceptional clarity. The home theatre system is ideal for use alongside 42- to 50-inch flatpanel televisions. Nokia N9 Nokia’s latest entry into the smartphone market is sophisticated and quite impressive

T

he design of Nokia N9 is breathtaking. The front is covered by a huge concave piece of glass with a very thin border. The overall shell is made of polycarbonate which is not only solid but feels wonderful in hand, especially with the rounded sides of the device. I’ve also been told that this makes the N9 scratch-friendly. The front of the N9 is button-free. However, you do have volume buttons and a power button on the side. On the

20 / TECH

top, there is a 3.5mm jack with a USB connector and the micro-sim tray. We finally have another handset that takes advantage of the micro-sim card after the iPhone 4. The smartphone sports an 8MP Carl Ziess lens along with a dual LED flash on the back. The front has an additional camera, surprisingly located at the bottom of the device. Breaking away from tradition seems to be the focus of the N9. When it comes to hardware, the N9 has all the bells and whistles of a

modern handset. It has a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU and PowerVR SGX530 GPU on a TI OMAP 3630 chipset along with 1GB RAM and either 16GB or 64GB storage. Interestingly, the 16GB unit we received had the storage space divided into three sections – 4.2GB for apps, 2.1GB for app data and 9.5GB for user data which can be used for all your media. You’re covered well on the radio side with support for HSDPA 14.4Mbps, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi with hotspot capabilities, and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR. AGPS is also present for maps.

from the traditional Nokia phones running Symbian as well as the upcoming Nokia phones that will be powered by Windows Phone 7. Nokia bundles a few games such as Angry Birds, Real Football and Need for Speed Shift to keep you entertained with the N9 while the music and video apps let you carry your collection with you. Maps is also built-in using OVI maps by Nokia which is free and allows you to download country maps over Wi-Fi so you don’t pay roaming charges when travelling abroad with your device.

The hardware is good enough to keep the phone running speedily most of the time, although every once in a while the phone stutters. Hopefully software updates will fix this as we move forward. Where the N9 really shines is with its 3.9-inch AMOLED screen which has a resolution of 854x480 pixels. While most smartphones project the display beneath the glass screen, information and icons on the N9 appear as though they are painted on the screen itself and not below it. It certainly looks incredible and even under the sun where most phone screens fade out, the N9’s screen is petty readable. Thankfully, we see the return of the ultra low power always-on screensaver clock with notifications for mail, messages and missed calls, making the notification LED redundant. Nokia is well known for their camera quality and the N9 certainly does not disappoint. The Carl Ziess lens-based camera takes beautiful pictures and takes them reasonably fast as long as flash is not involved. Using the dual LED flash will result in the familiar but minimal lag. The N9 is also capable of taking hi-definition videos at 720p.

Highlights • Superb hardware design and performance • Good display • Excellent user interface • Good battery life • One-handed use and fluid desktop interface • Superb social networking integration

Conclusion In the end, the N9 takes Nokia on the right track to moving away from Symbian. This design language can be seen in the Lumia 800 (and future products). We would have loved to have more third party apps. The N9 is sexy and sophisticated on the outside and quite impressive on the inside.

Beyond Entertainment Blu-ray is poised to take over as the consumer home-video format of choice

28 / TECH

D

VD is considered to be one of the greatest successes in consumer electronics history. Following its 1997 debut, it took the format just a few years to completely conquer the homevideo market which was previously ruled by VHS tapes. However, the electronics industry pretty soon began putting the DVD format out to pasture. And Blu-ray took over. Blu-ray is now poised to take over as the consumer home-video format of choice. It offers high-definition video and high-resolution audio, providing a superior viewing experience to DVD, although you need a modern home theatre to take complete advantage of it. Like every new format, Blu-ray comes with a whole host of new terminology, like 1080p, Blu-ray profiles, and onboard decoding. It can be overwhelming, but remember that Blu-ray is basically just like DVD: pop in the disc, then sit back and enjoy movies in high-def. However, Blu-ray’s beginnings have not been trouble-free. Blu-ray has been involved in a format war against HD DVD. There have been fights with regard to the high prices and the hardware. But the format has made a lot of progress in the last couple of years. So, in these pages we give you an insight into the world of Blu-ray format, and we have also featured some of the latest models available in town.

january 2012 / 29

It’s all about sound Home entertainment as we know it has changed beyond our wildest dreams

B

lu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a new optical disc format developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).

in the late 90s, home entertainment got its technical dimension. With it, the meaning of home entertainment changed significantly with more people installing home theatre systems with new gadgets and technologies. But the innovations did not end there.

Home entertainment as we knew it has changed drastically since the world of electronics started taking over our lives. Via different media, people now have immediate access to every kind of electronic entertainment they can dream of – all within the comforts of their homes. Innovations in technology have gifted us with loads of home entertainment options – from DVD players to the wireless Internet connection that offers the convenience of mobility. Good sound systems and speakers started to develop only in the mid 1970s, although radios, LPs and television made a permanent place in everyone’s home long before. Although various technologies were discovered to enhance the quality of sound, with music genres like rock, pop and discos invading the lives of consumers, there was a specific and urgent requirement for good quality sound systems. And so, the electronic giants continued to produce recorders, putting more emphasis on amplifying and equalising the sound to give it a new dimension. Good quality sound systems were specially designed and created for homes. Woofers and subwoofers, along with various amplifiers, equalisers and multi channel audio were being used to produce crisp stereophonic sounds. However, this concept took a back seat when CD and DVD players came into existence. With the invention of DVDs and a major development in the visual media such as Plasma and Liquid Crystal Display or LCD

30 / TECH

From the days of the VHS tapes DVDs brought us significantly better picture and sound, as well as scene by scene access and extras like director’s commentary. And it all came in a durable, easy to store format. However, it still lacked true High Definition playback and recording capability. The solution to this problem was Blu-ray. It was the only viable high-definition disc-based format for commercial content releases. Blu-ray uses blue laser and video compression technology to achieve high definition video playback on the same size disc as a standard DVD. And so, with the popularity of High Definition Televisions (HDTVs), Blu-ray players and discs, there is another wave of innovation in the home entertainment industry now.

Beyond the disc Blu-ray players are designed to take advantage of the Internet

T

he Blu-ray format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data, offering more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs. The BD can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs offers consumers an unprecedented HD experience. The latest Blu-ray players are designed to take advantage of the Internet, with special Internet-connected features on certain discs, and support of video streaming and other apps. Types of supported apps include news and weather apps from sources such as the BBC. Support for the applications, however, depends on the make and model of the player. There is a big benefit in picture quality if you are watching Blu-ray on any HDTV. And when buying a Blu-ray player for a slightly older HDTV, ensure that your player and TV have matching connections.

the latest video compression, packing more information into the same space without noise or video artefacts in the picture.

DVDs can still live Blu-ray player manufacturers have included the ability for their units to playback standard DVDs and this is expected to continue. This means your current DVD library is playable on a Blu-ray Disc player. Also, when playing a standard DVD in a Blu-ray Disc player, you can view it at standard resolution or have the player up-scale the DVD playback signal to match 720p or 1,080i, or in some cases, 1,080p mode, which will be a better match on compatible HDTVs.

Blu-ray discs versus DVDs Even though they are the same size and shape as DVDs, everything about Blu-ray discs has been redesigned: 1. New laser technology for greater capacity: Blu-ray uses blue lasers, which have a narrower beam than the red lasers in DVDs, giving them up to five times the capacity of DVDs in the same sized disc. 2. Different materials: Blu-ray discs are made of a harder, much more scratch-resistant plastic for better reliability. 3. Advanced video compression: The information stored on Blu-ray discs uses

january 2012 / 31

Better in Blu-ray Blu-ray discs offer the best in picture and sound quality

B

lu-ray discs produce the best possible picture quality for an HDTV, with seven times the resolution of a DVD. Everything looks sharper – details such as skin and hair, patterns on clothing and even faces of people in the background can appear sharp. Blu-ray discs provide far more accurate colour which creates richer, more lifelike pictures. Blu-ray has also taken the home surround sound capabilities to another level. Its high capacity format allows for more depth of sound and better support for additional speakers. Some of the new surround sound formats supported on Blu-ray, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, are basically identical to the original sound sent to theatres.

The right choice High definition audio: High-resolution audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTSHD Master Audio are lossless and deliver studio-type sound. Most Blu-ray players can pass high-resolution audio via bitstream over HDMI to audio-video receivers, but only the

32 / TECH

latest receivers have the needed decoders and HDMI inputs. Standard-definition performance: Blu-ray players can play standard-definition discs, but not all of them play these DVDs equally well. Firmware updates: Most Blu-ray players can accept firmware updates, and manufacturers use that capability to fix performance issues or to add new features to players after they reach consumers. Players with Ethernet or wireless connections are the easiest to update as they can fetch updates directly from the Internet. HDTV: For the best viewing you’ll need an HDTV with 1080p resolution. Many HDTVs only have 720p resolution, so HD images will be scaled down to fit the television’s available pixels. Network connection: BD-Live-compliant players need a connection to the Internet to fetch additional disc content and features. One solution is a wireless link to your Internet router. Budget Blu-ray players, however, require a hardwire connection.

Innovative screen Samsung SUR40 offers a premier touch-first experience

S

amsung and Microsoft recently announced a second, more retail-friendly version of Microsoft Surface device which is now available for pre-order. The Samsung SUR40 is a new surface device that incorporates all the key features of the original – a massive multi-touch screen, the ability to recognise fingers, blobs and objects. It also features PixelSense, a new technology that lets LCD panels ‘see’ without the use of actual cameras.

PixelSense technology allows an LCD display to recognise fingers, hands and objects placed on the screen, including more than 50 simultaneous touch points. With this technology, pixels in the display see what’s touching the screen and that information is immediately processed and interpreted. The technology has helped slim down this version of the surface device, enabling a new form factor, one that can be turned on its side. With a screen that’s only four inches thin, customers will have the option to use

the Samsung SUR40 horizontally as a table, hang it on a wall, or embed it into furniture. This 40-inch high-definition screen enables unparalleled multi-touch, multiuser experience with a 1080p, 16:9, 1,920x1,080 display. The product uses the embedded AMD Athlon II X2 dualcore 2.9GHz processor paired with AMD HD6750M GPU featuring DirectX 11 support to deliver significant processing horsepower and outstanding graphics capability.

HOW STUFF WORKS

The secret touch

From mobile phones to televisions, the touchscreen revolution is here to stay. Here is how the technology works

T

he touchscreen function in gadgets has made navigation easy and friendly. It truly brings the world to your fingertips. There are three basic systems, of which the resistive and the capacitive touch system are the most common. The resistive system is a normal glass panel covered with a conductive and a resistive metallic layer separated by spacers, with a scratch-resistant layer topping it all. Electric current runs through the two layers when the monitor is operational. And when a user touches the screen the two layers make contact in the exact spot, creating a change in the electrical field. The change is noted and the co-ordinates of the point of contact of the layers are calculated by the computer. This calculation is then deciphered by the operating system using special driver software. The capacitive system has a glasspanelled monitor with a layer that stores electrical charge placed on it. A touch on the monitor transfers some of this charge to the user, thus decreasing the charge on the capacitive layer. Circuits located at the corners of the monitor measure 42 / TECH

this decrease in charge. The exact position of the touch is calculated by the computer from the relative differences in charge at each corner. And the information is then relayed to the touchscreen driver software. The surface acoustic wave system has two transducers placed along the x and y axis of the monitor’s glass plate. One transducer

is used for sending the signal and the other is used for reception. The reflectors placed on the glass reflect the electrical signal sent from one transducer to the other. The receiving transducer can detect touch with the difference created in the wave. This difference is understood by the receiving transducer and the exact position of the touch is calculated.

Compact hybrid crossover concept that is designed to be practical

T

he Volkswagen Cross Coupé is a concept SUV that looks towards the future. The sporty Cross Coupé is an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid vehicle that combines the best of both worlds – the vehicle is part four-door coupé and part compact SUV. The concept is

based on Volkswagen’s new modular transverse matrix (MQB). This is the first time a vehicle has been shown off this platform. This four-seater is powered by two electric motors and a direct-injection turbocharged gasoline (TSI) engine. It can drive a distance of up to 25 miles purely

on electric power. There are three driving modes available to the driver: City (ecomode with minimal fuel consumption); Sport (dynamic driving); and Off-road (permanent all-wheel drive).

with 265/45-section tyres. At the rear, a voluminous coupé-like C-post rises up over the wheel arches. The Cross Coupé is designed to be practical off-road as well as on pavement. The designers of the Cross Coupé have physically merged the twin bi-xenon headlamps with the radiator grille’s chrome-plated fins. Two chrome bars ascend to the sides of the vehicle and link the headlamps. The lower of the two

chrome fins contains the Daytime Running Lights and the fin above it incorporates the turn signals.

Design The important features of the Cross Coupé’s styling are the long hood, a new frontal aesthetic, the set-back passenger compartment, and the low window line. One prominent element is a shoulder line that runs just below the frameless windows, extending from the front to the rear fenders. The fenders produce a silhouette that is reminiscent of a sports car. The vehicle comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, equipped 44 / TECH

The centre of the bumper has an area painted in the vehicle’s colour. Right at the bottom of the bumper is another air intake, which is fitted with two additional smaller chrome bars. To the left and right of each inlet are the LED fog lights.

Interior The surface of the dashboard exudes a refined quality, yet is also very robust. The stability control systems and driving modes are controlled via two aluminiumalloy rotary switches, with the button for the electric parking brake located between them. The strikingly wide shift lever for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) transmission is also made of aluminium. Two grab handles are a feature of the centre stack, which also incorporates the HVAC controls and air vents, and a touchscreen display that monitors all relevant vehicle functions, from on- and off-road navigation to the sound system. The Cross Coupé is fitted with four individual bucket seats that have solidly integrated headrests. The backs of the rear seats and the front passenger’s seat can be folded fully forwards to accommodate bulky items. The seat backs have an outer synthetic covering so that they form a durable surface. There’s 13.4cu-ft of trunk space behind the rear seats, which expands to 43.4cu-ft with the rear seats folded.

Hybrid Powertrain The Cross Coupé has not one but three power sources, which work together efficiently as a hybrid system. Under the hood, there’s a 148hp TSI engine that delivers 155lb-ft of torque as well as an electric motor that makes 54hp and 133lb-ft. Together or individually these two motors power the front axle. The overall output of the system (gasoline engine and electric motors) is a maximum of 262hp. When the vehicle is being driven purely on electric power, the motors receive their current from an eight-module 9.8kWh lithium-ion battery. An electronic power control module, operating at around 370V and integrated into the engine compartment, manages the flow of highvoltage energy to and from the battery and the electric motors. Meanwhile, the Cross Coupé’s low-voltage electrical system is supplied with the necessary 12V through a DC/DC converter. january 2012 / 45

gamer’s delight

A darker game that may keep the train of success running

W

ith the success of its predecessor Arkham Asylum, Batman or should we say The Dark Knight returns to keep order and take down thugs in Batman: Arkham City. There seem to be many villains for you to take down and a huge city for you to explore, but can Batman: Arkham City keep the train of success running? Or will it be stopping at Arkham City station? Arkham City carries on months after the conclusion of the last game. The former warden of the Asylum has become the new mayor of Gotham City and he’s moved all the criminals to a closed off area in Gotham called Arkham City, a super prison run by Dr Strange. Batman decides to go down to Arkham City and check things out for himself. The centre of the story would be Batman and The Joker, but how that narrative is driven in the game is incredibly impressive. Throughout Arkham City you will hear thug factions talking about events currently happening and future events that you will encounter in the game. The only gripe we had with the plot is that there may have been too many villains for Batman to take on this time. The only villain that has a big impact on the story is The Joker.

Also part of the story is Batman’s favourite lady, Catwoman. Anyone who buys the game new gets a DLC code with which they can download the character and play out her story. Most control mechanics have been kept from the last game, but has been polished to work better than ever. You still have your stand attack button to bring pain to your enemies, counter button to stop attacks landing and a jump button to leap around as much as you like. Upgrades are a great way to progress too. Once you acquire enough points from your battles you will be able to apply them to Batman. Upgrades such as stronger defence against bullets can be really helpful in the mix, especially if you’re like me and just want to head straight into battle. Sound is used brilliantly in the game depending on the situation you’re in. It can make you feel the adrenaline of taking on 20 people at once. The quiet ambience can make you feel tense and sharp when going into the stealth mode. As always, voice acting is brilliant with Mark Hamill’s incredible yet twisted Joker and Kevin Conroy’s stern yet fierce Batman. It really pulls you into the game and sets the atmosphere really well. Visuals are well detailed with amazing lighting effects that truly bring out the gritty and dark environment that is Arkham City. Character models and animations are well done, especially when it comes to cut scenes, making their performance both engaging and immersive.

If there is one tiny defect with this, it would have to be Batman’s walk animation. Of course he’s a big strong dude and that armour he’s wearing probably weighs a lot. However, his walk still looks awfully stiff and doesn’t flow well compared to all his other movements. Conclusion Batman: Arkham City is a gaming experience that’s one for the ages. With new additions and reworking the old, Rocksteady have managed to create another Batman game that not only defeats Arkham Asylum but leaves it in the dirt.

A less daring entry than its revolutionary predecessors

A

ssassin’s Creed: Revelations follows just a year after the release of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, which in turn followed just a year after the release of Assassin’s Creed II. And after the success of Brotherhood, Revelations has quite a bit to live up to. Like the previous entries in the series, the bulk of the game takes place in the mind of Desmond Miles as he searches through the genetic memories of his ancestors, Altair and Ezio. These memories hold the keys to unlocking something in the present day, if only we knew what that was.

to. This is somewhat misleading as Altair is playable for just a small fraction of the game. Make no mistake, Revelations is a game once again centred on the actions of Ezio.

If you are new to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Revelations is not for you. The game picks up moments after the shocking conclusion to Brotherhood and without prior knowledge of at least the previous two games, you will be at your wit’s end trying to understand all the plot contrivances. For those who have followed along on Desmond’s past forays into his ancestral past, Revelations does a lot to tie up loose ends, albeit possibly not the ones you want tied up.

because of how the city is designed there is a noticeable feeling of déjà vu as Ezio traverses it. This was obviously the intention of the game designers as they try to tie the storylines of Ezio and Altair together, but it also results in a tired feeling for the level design.

Due to the events at the end of Brotherhood, Desmond is in a mental state of flux which has him plugged into the Animus for his survival, marooned on what is known as Animus Island. The Island acts as the hub to feed Desmond’s story to the player and its success is somewhat questionable. Ubisoft has painted Revelations as an adventure split between both Altair and Ezio, the two assassins Desmond is related

Revelations takes Ezio to Constantinople in a race against the Templars to find five keys which will unlock Altair’s library in Masayf. Like all the cities in the game series, Constantinople is an artistic masterpiece. The Eastern and Western influences are apparent in everything and the city truly feels like the meeting place of the East and West. However,

Fortunately, the game introduces a few new mechanics to the mix to help spruce things up. The biggest and most important addition is the hook blade. This blade is a replacement for Ezio’s second hidden blade, and has a variety of uses. Zip lines have been placed throughout the city and Ezio can quickly traverse the rooftops by hooking onto one with his new blade. Additionally, the blade provides a handful of new combat moves to Ezio’s already vast arsenal. Revelations also adds bomb crafting and a simplistic tower defence game called Den Defense. Outside of a few missions, I found little reason to actually spend time crafting bombs.

Also returning to the mix from Brotherhood in Revelations is the critically acclaimed multiplayer component. The multiplayer has been refined a bit, making the learning curve far less steep than before and in turn making it more satisfying for new players. However, despite being a well-constructed and thoroughly unique multiplayer experience, it will still be an afterthought for most players and Revelations will struggle to maintain its community in an already crowded multiplayer market. None of the gameplay additions or expansions has changed the core of Assassin’s Creed gameplay though, which is still amazingly fluid. The combat is still some of the best in gaming and the platforming is once again a highlight of the game, with Revelations featuring some of the best sequences not just in the series, but in gaming. Sony’s Uncharted series may grab the headlines for its blend of storytelling and gameplay but Assassin’s Creed is right up there with it, arguably doing many things better. Ubisoft has made clear that another Assassin’s Creed game will be coming in 2012. That game needs to get the series back on track because good is just not good enough for this series.

J Edgar Genre: Biography | Drama Director: Clint Eastwood Cast: Armie Hammer, Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts

D

uring his lifetime, J Edgar Hoover would rise to be the most powerful man in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats both real and perceived, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted,

if ever elusive, prize. As the face of law enforcement in America, Hoover was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life. J Edgar, starring DiCaprio as the protagonist, explores the public and private life of the man who could distort the truth as easily as he upheld it during a life devoted to his own idea of justice, often swayed by the darker side of power.

The Iron Lady Genre: Biography | Drama Director: Phyllida Lloyd Cast: Jim Broadbent, Meryl Streep, Richard E. Grant

T

he Iron Lady is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), an extraordinary and complex woman. Thatcher was the first and only female prime minister of the United Kingdom. She was one of the most famous and influential women of the 20th century. The movie tells the story of the woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-

dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power. The film is narrated through a series of flashbacks, including the 17 days leading up to the Falklands War in 1982. The film brilliantly reminds us just how much Thatcher achieved, and just how relentlessly hostile and violent were the forces ranged against her.

FUTURISTIC look The Eclipse wireless phone doubles as a decorative piece of art

T

he moment you set eyes on the Eclipse DECT wireless home phone designed by Sebastien Sauvage, it resembles a piece of decorative art. It consists of a base unit and handset embedded together in a single and continuous ellipsoidal form factor. With no visible signs of a display or keypad, the Eclipse conforms to the minimalist school of thought in design. It features a crystal-clear display and high-quality duplex speakerphone.

Of course, it will take you some time to get used to this gadget. It is quite sleek and the finish is really something to be impressed about. In spite of the rather weird form factor, neither the functionality nor user comfort has been compromised in any way. The keypad remains invisible when the handset is resting on the base unit. The Eclipse will be ready for distribution around the world from early 2012.

P

errelet has explored the many possibilities afforded by its famous double rotor watches in the Turbine version. This 44mm-diameter Turbine watch in DLC-coated steel, issued in a special 888-piece limited edition, sports golden ingots drawn on the lower dial, with a solid gold ring placed in the centre of the stylised upper turbine. The gilding on the numerals, hour-markers and hands reflect the same glow, creating a chic, rosy tone that makes a beautiful contrast with the black background. The brand plays with reflections of gold. As soon as the 12-blade wheel begins turning, and depending on the speed of rotation, the gold shines and sparkles between the blades to the point of merging the various golden accents.

Legendary Rare integration of a minute repeater inside a watch with a maritime vocation

C

orum Admiral’s Cup 45 Minute Repeater Tourbillon, first presented in 2009, now comes with a grade 5 titanium case, a material that is ultraresistant and hard to machine. It is not just for its resistance to corrosion that this alloy has been chosen, but also for its acoustic qualities. Endowed with the physical properties to ensure perfect

resonance of the notes emitted by the striking mechanism, this rare integration of a minute repeater inside a watch with a maritime vocation combines the strengths of two worlds. Decorating, assembling and adjusting the 331 parts of this mechanism has taken over 160 hours. Compared with

traditional minute repeaters, the minutes rack at the heart of the striking system has been inverted. This gives each note more strength and precision. Counter-springs are fixed to the hammers that hit the gongs. The counter-springs are designed to balance striking strength and speed.

Design The wheels and pinions are circular satin-brushed, the steel parts (particularly the strike hammers and the tourbillon bridge) are mirror-polished with zinc, the main plate is circular-grained, and the bridges are decorated with a Côtes de Genève motif. The dial is replaced by a smoked PVD-treated sapphire crystal. Its grey-coloured treatment, emphasised by the monochrome nautical pennants on the flange, lends this model an understated and yet highly technical nature. The crystal is also engraved with the inscriptions ‘Corum’, ‘Minute Repeater’ and ‘Tourbillon’. The 45mm-diameter case sports a polished satin-finished 12-sided bezel.

Ingenious winding The bezel features a hidden function. It would have been risky to have the minute repeater slide protruding from the case middle in such a sporty model, as it might snag or knock against something, thereby damaging the mechanism. And so, mounted on steel runners and delrin blocks to reduce friction, the bezel of the Admiral’s Cup 45 Minute Repeater Tourbillon serves to wind the minute repeater function by a clever 27-degree clockwise rotation. 54 / TECH
