WELCOME LETTER July 1st, 2015 Dear Global Youth Institute Students, Host Families, Alumni, and Teachers:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Global Youth Institute in Taipei, Taiwan. This year we have students from Taiwan, Russia, Germany, and the United States who will come together to continue pursuing the mission of GYI: to create a community of international learners who cooperatively seek solutions to global issues and to develop a sense of global citizenship. This year’s theme was created in consultation with Taiwanese alumni and is entitled “Redefining: Trends, Challenges, and Possibilities for the 21st Century”. This year’s theme is purposely abstract so that students will have the opportunity to tailor the theme to their interests, and our hope is that students will take an interdisciplinary approach to examining unique issues facing our increasingly globalized world. Some of the potential topics to be explored are education, public health, architecture, entrepreneurship, media, and many other possible topics. Our schedule includes a retreat within the first few days of arriving and then a combination of collaborative and experiential learning throughout Taipei and greater Taiwan. Our agenda includes a variety of experiences both inside and outside the classroom-from Whitewater Rafting to discovering Museums to walking through the famed Ningxia Night Market, students will have a number of eclectic experiences together that will give them a greater appreciation of the diverse culture of Taiwan as well as the cultures of each of the countries participating in GYI this year. These collective experiences will also help us fulfill our goal of exploring unique challenges in the 21st Century, and at the end of our time together students will use their experiences and new friendships to propose

a plan or project that “redefines” an important global topic.

This year’s Global Youth Institute would not have been possible without the support and hard work of a number of individuals, groups, and institutions throughout the world: Friendship Force Taipei, Mr. Nick Wu and all of the excellent GYI staffers in Taiwan, Des Moines Public Schools, all of our wonderful Taiwanese host families who have graciously accepted to welcome us into their homes for our stay in Taiwan, and last but not least the students for their willingness to take a risk and expose themselves to new people and ideas. Again, welcome to the Global Youth Institute 2015 in Taiwan and I look forward to creating lifelong friendships.

Sincerely,

Dan Swanson, Interim-Director Global Youth Institute

M O R F R E T T E L A 今 年 GYI 2015 Taiwan 的 主 題 為「Redefining: Trends, Challenges, and Possibilites in 21st century.」

NICK

Thank you, each and every one of you, for making GYI 2015 possible. Hello everyone!! My name is Hsu, Wei-Hung, and simply you can call me Jacky. I’m so excited and also looking forward to meeting you guys in July. I now live in Taipei, where is the capital city in Taiwan, and also a place full of friendly people and vitality. I can’t wait to show you guys how awesome Taipei is!! In my spare time, I like watching movies and TV series, especially agent series, because I’ve always had a dream to be a FBI or agent of shield. That sounds sort of crazy and ridiculous, right?? LOL!! Besides, I am in a band with my friends, and I play drums. We play romantic music or rock music. And we just finished our performance on graduation party. In addition, I now go to gym to workout regularly in order to get stronger, because I’m too skinny. Last but not least, I’m in ecstasy, and I can’t wait to see you guys.

When it come to GYI2015, the most important thing for me is to make friend with you, introducing and helping you understand and experience Taiwan much deeper and having a fantastic summer. And I hope one day I could visit your country with you, seriously ! I really want to do it! Maybe we can get together again in… 5 or 10 years later(or shorter).

IV STUDENT Taiwan-Ian Huang

Out of all the students in GYI 2015, I’m probably the shortest boy and the youngest of all the participants. But, going from only 9th grade to 10th grade doesn’t mean that my IQ is as low as the number of characters in my first name. In fact, I am curious about all the things around me, whether geographic or scientific, absorbing information like a sponge is to water. I like to capture the world’s finest moments through photography, through the mere bits of light shining through my humble iPhone lenses. On the other hand, I express myself with music. I’m nerdy in some extent, but I’m outgoing and optimistic. Unfortunately, I laugh at the worst things, and my puns are bad, so that’s something you’ll definitely see in me for the next few weeks. I look forward to GYI and getting to know everyone :)

I love throwing myself out of my comfort zone and doing crazy things so if you are going to try something exciting or maybe stupid, I can always be your best partner. In my spare time, I like playing sports, watching korean romance drama, and traveling around the world by google earth. I am also a vegetable maniac because i can't live even one day without it, and onion and potato are my favorite. I signed up gyi 2015 because i want to share my counterparts the beauty of my hometown and at the same time learn something new from you. Redefining Thinking NTU Design Thinking Club

Design Thinking is a methodology to solve problems with a creative, human-centered and failure-embracing mindset, which is applicable to a variety of fields. Design Thinking exercises empathy, creativity and the ability of rational analysis to dig for user's hidden needs and insights, which assures that the user's needs are fully met while the problem is solved. Different from Analytical Thinking, Design Thinking emphasizes on “adding on other's Ideas," which eliminates the fear of sharing and encourages members to be involved in the process of thinking and come up with crazy thoughts, often becoming the foundation of finding the most innovative and ground-breaking solutions. In short, with such mindset, Design Thinking is a way to bring better ideas and more beautiful things to the society.
