WHAT ARE ACTIVITY CENTRES ?
Case Studies
Activity centres for children are places where extra-curricular activities, games, or play happens. Activity centres can be integral part of the school or can even function separately. With the schools it adds on to the value or learning and also is beneficial to children, they enjoy more during their activities.
The analytic data can be obtained by Articles published by local magazine or newspaper regarding my Topic. To decide the no. of occupants and types of users I will be needing the Analytical data.
We will try to understand the needs of physically handicapped children and how the activities could be made easily accessible and useable for children with special needs. The study will talk about activities like swimming, indoor play areas, wheelchair basketball and the auxiliary activities needed for these activities.
Analysis of Data Now that I would have gathered all the required information, and became clear of my objectives and design strategies based on all the factors, I would prioritize the collected data and Begin my design.
Introduction
Conclusions
Specially-abled children need ‘special care’. Dedicated attention, both physically and mentally, is crucial for their wellbeing. Though families play a big part, yet the support from a trained system of care cannot be denied. Apart from health, such children also need special facilities at schools, colleges and workplaces.
The Conclusion of my research will provide me a clear idea of the need and suitability of the Project to be designed. Also, I will have enough Information gathered at the end to produce a habitable, convenient and affordable design and construction based on my research.
‘The State Education Report for India 2019: Children with disabilities’ by UNESCO states that 27% of disabled children between the ages of 5-19 years don’t have access to education.
Site Selection The selection of the site will be the crucial part where numerous factors has to be considered. The location of the site preferably should be in a less crowded zone. As my prime users are Children with physical disabilities. I should make sure the location of the site is more in a residential area where they can interact and communicate with other kids and parents once a while. I prefer it to be more of a site open to interaction I will have to be careful with the accessibility to the site. The site should be free from levels so that the connectivity between spaces in the site becomes easier for the children to move.
The report also clarified that the number of disabled girls attending schools is significantly lower than disabled boys. These calls for immediate action to ensure that disabled children with locomotor disabilities acquire proper extra co-curricular skillsets.
Objectives The objective is to provide a design based solution where the children receive care and protection, empower them through skillset which will allow them to explore and realise their self-value and give them all sources of exposure and opportunities to perform their best through an environment where they can learn and grow like other children of their age.
Design Policies The idea is to design a campus with pockets of nature in it so that the user experiences the openness and freedom to choose. Various Activities, Pause points and Space typologies will also be there based on the needs and requirements of the user. I plan to use locally available and sustainable materials for the built spaces.
The idea is to provide them with all the necessary assets required to get ready for the real world through experience and education.
Exclusions
Hypothesis
The entire design proposal will be limited to physically-disabled children and it’s going to be a an activity centre and not a school.
The Activity Centre will be a major part in shaping up their motor and creative skills and keeping a record of their progress until they are ready. The Space will have an Environment where children can explore themselves, interact and moreover learn things their own way. The final output of the design problem will be a second home to these children, with all the amenities and necessary spaces required for them to learn and explore in creative approach.
My project will aim to enrich the lives of disabled children through designing a space which allows them to experience activities that were once only a dream. I want the users of my building to become confident and prosperous within themselves, whilst gaining a more active lifestyle. I envisage the building to be mainly exercise-based, but there shall be spaces for the opportunity to gain skills through a learning-based approach. I will deliver a building that is fully accessible, contextual in its design and a place for kids to play, learn and explore.

Conclusion Nagpur has many NGO’s working for such cases but hardly a place where all the efforts can be utilised properly. Hence, I feel the need of providing a place where one or more NGO’s can contribute or manage the entire operation.

Data Collection and Analysis
INTRODUCTION
There are many NGO’s which support and work in such fields, hence a couple of live Interview or Internet case studies will help me clear my vision to the basic requirements and help me understand the project better.
These activities may include going out and playing on the ground or even in their own classes or specially designated activity areas, depending on the type of activity. This study will talk about few activities that an activity centre for children may have.

COURTYARDS • The idea behind creating pocket spaces between the built area is to promote natural cooling and maximize the access of natural light inside the work and livable spaces. • Almost every space is assisted by a spillover space for the kids to pause and gather around. • Open space will open up opportunities for kids to explore and try different activities. • Trees and vegetation help shade the open and semi open space so that the outdoor play spaces will be usable even in harsh sunlight.
CONCEPTION
SCALE - N.T.S
• The ratio of built and unbuilt spaces detemine the type of usage and the user experience that the design has to provide. • The approach towards designing spaces has be taken care of by adopting universal design, and use of variety of materials has been kept to minimal with exposed concrete and brick cladding. • Various types of medicinal plants and flowers are planted at various zones along the corridors and window sides.
SPACE DISTRIBUTION
• Use of playful colours at various spaces help determine the type and usability of the space.

The module of seating space has been experimented by various range of textures and floor finishes. The intent was to provide a playful zone for kids to take rest or to play along with fellow kids. The colour pallette used for the floor finishes are more likely to attract a kid. Stone and Grass patches add up to the user exeperience in terms of touch and material feel.

Mound is the key focus and one of the major gathering and celebrated spaces in the design. The intent is to provide an experience when one can explore the ups and down along with a flat surface to pause and then continue the cycle again. The large parent tree planted in the centre becomes an ideal space to meet and celebrate the activities.
