CONCERT SERIES
MARIUSZ SMOLIJ // MUSIC DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR
The classical concept of the existence of basic elements — water, fire, air, and earth — has been embraced almost universally by philosophers and cultures throughout history. Beginning with Babylonian mythology in the 18th century BC, through the cultures of ancient Greece and Egypt, and even in modern times, these elements affect our perception of the world around us. In addition to being the foundation of science and our modern existence, the classical elements greatly influence the work of artists, poets, and musicians who express human thought and emotion. Many prominent musical composers continue to be fascinated and inspired by forces of nature.
The climate, seasons, landscapes and vegetation of our planet greatly affect our lives and the way we connect with Earth. Artists and composers, depending on their geographic locations and personal experiences, often take unique approaches to describe their admiration for the beauty of the Earth. The artistic view can be “global” as in the “Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi or “local” as described in the Csárdás Rhapsody by Hungarian-American composer Eugene Zador. The endless timbre abilities of a symphony orchestra allow music to transport the composers and the audience to extraordinary vistas of our beautiful planet, Earth.
ARTISTIC VISION
2013 2016
During this season, ASO continues to explore the connections between music and three classical elements. Following the themes of Fire in 2014/15 and Water in the previous season, we will conclude with the theme of Earth. Our repertoire will feature musical masterpieces in many different musical styles that reflect the fascinating connection between sound and the elements of our terrestrial world.

WELCOME TO THE ST 31 SEASON OF YOUR ACADIANA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
MARIUSZ SMOLIJ MUSIC DIRECTOR and CONDUCTOR
As our organization embarks on its fourth decade of serving Acadiana, it gives me great pleasure to introduce a series of seven exciting concerts for the 2015/16 season. Being the only fully professional, resident performing arts organization in our region, ASO feels a great sense of pride and responsibility to share the gift of live orchestral music with our entire community. This coming season will conclude our three-year artistic exploration of the classical elements, Water, Fire, and Earth. As we explore
the final element, Mother Earth, our musical journeys will take us from the harsh winter in the Italian Alps to the bucolic charms of the Hungarian countryside and the energetic dances of a Spanish village. We will experience the emotional connections that people have with their lands and how the music reflects their identity and their heritage. To accompany us on this journey there will be a stellar line-up of guest artists, including among others, Marc Broussard who will connect our music with Louisiana local traditions; Antonio di Cristofano, a leading Italian pianist who will perform a colorful concerto by another Mediterranean artist, Ravel; Polish violin virtuoso, Kinga Augustyn, who will bring with her the
musical flair of Eastern Europe; and Russian pianist, Gleb Ivanov, who will paint impressionistic musical pictures of Southern France. We are also delighted to collaborate again in this upcoming season with the Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus, Chorale Acadienne, students from Nicholls State University, and our local youth instrumentalists and singers. Please don’t miss a beat! Join your Acadiana Symphony this season on our exciting musical journey around the planet Earth!
