Sid Sidebottom MP
… for a fair go in Braddon
MEDIA RELEASE 11 November 2010
Improving literacy and numeracy for Indigenous students Indigenous students at Ulverstone Primary will benefit from new funding to help improve literacy and numeracy says the Federal Member for Braddon. Ulverstone Primary was one of five schools around Tasmania to share in almost $1.9 million awarded to the Tasmanian Department of Education for the Raising the Bar – Closing the Gap initiative. Mr Sidebottom congratulated the school and Department on taking the initiative to help Indigenous students in particular with improving literacy and numeracy. “We have seen a focus on these important foundation skills in the last few years, and I’m sure what is introduced for Indigenous students will also have benefits for the remainder of the school,” Mr Sidebottom said. “The School will be funded to employ additional staff and to cooperate with other local schools to develop and promote successful practice in leadership, cultural competency, inclusive curriculum and community engagement. “The aim is to accelerate literacy and numeracy achievements throughout the community.” Further information can be found on the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations website at http://www.deewr.gov.au/indigenous/schooling/pages/litnum.aspx
