Campaign Media Release MEMBER FOR BRADDON TONY ABBOTT SAYS HIS OWN CANDIDATES’ PROMISES CAN’T BE TRUSTED Residents of Braddon now have proof that they can’t trust the election promises made by Garry Carpenter– after extraordinary comments by Tony Abbott. When asked about candidate election commitments at a press conference in Sydney last week, Tony Abbott made a frank admission: “The fact of the matter is, local candidates say all sorts of things. What matters is the policy that the Party has adopted...” Tony Abbott, press conference, Western Sydney, 12 August 2010 Tony Abbott’s comments call Garry Carpenter’s entire credibility into question. “This is a humiliating revelation for Garry Carpenter – their own party has placed a question mark over all their so-called promises,” Federal Member for Braddon, Sid Sidebottom, said. “I call on Garry Carpenter to urgently clarify which of their commitments do not have Tony Abbott’s personal support. “The Braddon community can’t trust the Coalition on managing the local economy – our hospitals, our schools and our infrastructure – let alone managing the national economy. “Tony Abbott’s economic credibility is already in tatters with his national spending commitments clearly not adding up. “Now Tony Abbott is trying to back away from local spending commitments as well and the community deserves some answers.” Coalition commitments which now have a big question mark hanging over them include: Funding for a Headspace Centre Funding for a Cancer Centre, which is already a significant shortfall on what is required to deliver the project.
Even Garry Carpenter’s commitment to match Labor’s $3 million investment in the Simplot Plant upgrade is in question. In contrast, Federal Labor’s election commitments are fully funded and fully supported by a Government which recognises the importance of investing in our community. The Gillard Labor Government’s fully funded and supported projects in Braddon include: $250,000 for the Safer Suburbs project, including CCTV in Devonport $5 million for the Devonport Aquatic Centre These commitments build on those already delivered in Braddon by the Labor Government including $4.8 million to North West Regional Hospital to redevelop the Emergency Department and purchase medical equipment $2 million to the West Park Sports Facility in Burnie $1 million to the Devonport Surf Club redevelopment $1.8 million to the Ulverstone Showground upgrades $750,000 to the Circular Head Recreation Centre BURNIE 16 AUGUST 2010 COMMUNICATIONS UNIT: Phone: (02) 9384 2220 | Fax: (02) 9264 2213 www.alp.org.au AUTHORISED N.MARTIN for the ALP, 5/9 Sydney Ave. Barton ACT.
