Campaign Media Release PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR EMPLOYMENT MEMBER FOR BRADDON NEW TRADE TRAINING CENTRE OPENED IN DEVONPORT – BUT OTHER PROJECTS AT RISK FROM COALITION CUTS Parliamentary Secretary for Employment Jason Clare and Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom today opened the $1.4 million Trade Training Centre for St Brendan Shaw College. “This facility will give students the skills they need to start a career. The jobs of the future are going to require more skills. This centre will give local students a chance to start getting these skills at school,” Mr Clare said. “This wouldn’t have been built without the hard work of Sid Sidebottom – he has argued that this community needs more investments in facilities like this for years. Today we see the results of his hard work.” Mr Sidebottom said that this Trade Training Centre would give students the opportunity to start a trade while they are at school. “This is a big win for our local community. It will mean that students from St Brendan Shaw and other local schools will be able to start training for a trade,” Mr Sidebottom said. “Labor understands how important it is that our young people learn the skills they need to get a good job. That is why we are investing in new projects like this Trade Training Centre.” The Gillard Labor Government is building on the success of Trade Training Centres with the announcement that new National Trade Cadetships will be available from 2012 under the National Curriculum. Mr Sidebottom said through the National Trade Cadetships would be supported by up to 50,000 work experience places.

“The National Cadetship means that students from years 9 to 12 will be able to start a pre-apprenticeship here in this Trade Training Centre,” Mr Sidebottom said. “Students who want to start a trade will have a clear pathway and transferable skills, in the same way that kids who want to go to university do now.” Tony Abbott has said he will cut Trades Training Centres and will slash investments in schools and training. “Tony Abbott will take Australia backwards with cuts to Trades Training Centres in high schools. This means 1.2 million students in more than 1,800 schools will miss out on the chance to start learning a trade at high school under the LiberalNational Coalition,” Mr Clare said.
