Campaign Media Release MINISTER FOR INNOVATION, INDUSTRY, SCIENCE AND RESEARCH FEDERAL LABOR MEMBER FOR BRADDON PROTECTING NORTH-WEST TASMANIA’S FUTURE Innovation Minister Kim Carr today visited North West Tasmania to discuss the importance of supporting the local economy and jobs with the local community and Sid Sidebottom, the Federal Labor Member for Braddon. “Julia Gillard believes in a strong economy and better services in education and health,” said Kim Carr. “The Gillard Labor Government has a comprehensive economic plan that will protect jobs and services for the community, while bringing the budget back to surplus in 2013.” “In contrast, Tony Abbott who believes in cuts to health, cuts to education, cuts to superannuation, cuts to broadband and not responding to the challenge of climate change.” “Mr Abbott does not understand the economy, or the importance of services and jobs to local communities such as those here in North-West Tasmania,” said Sid Sidebottom, Federal Labor Member for Braddon. North-west Tasmania was hit hard by the global recession and the closure of Tas Paper and the downsizing of McCains. “Federal Labor has invested in protecting and creating jobs through the Enterprise Connect centre at Burnie, which has given direct assistance to almost one hundred firms.” “The Federal Labor Government responded quickly to create more than 420 new jobs in partnership with local industry through the North West and Northern Tasmania Innovation and Investment Fund.”
“We worked with the community to find real solutions to keep men and women in work – including by offering people the chance to re-skill through the Productivity Places Program.” “We have also established the Pulp and Paper Industry Innovation Council to develop a national development strategy for the industry.” “These actions have strengthened the economy of north-west Tasmania and provide a platform for future growth.” “Tony Abbott does not have a vision. Tony Abbott would take us backwards with his long list of cuts - cuts to schools, trade training, wages, essential public services and business support.” “It is also clear that Tony Abbott will bring back the worst aspects of WorkChoices and take away protection and job security for local workers,” said Sid Sidebottom.
