New pathway at Somerset for walkers, runners, cyclists – everyone! FAMILIES and exercise enthusiasts can now walk, run and cycle their way through a brand new pathway through Somerset’s Anzac Park and along the foreshore. Officially opened today by Federal Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom, the new wheelchairaccessible 1.5km Somerset pathway also incorporates 11 exercise stations. Mr Sidebottom said this project received $200,000 from the Rudd Government through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program. “A project such as this pathway is worth its weight in gold, because it will benefit so many people,” Mr Sidebottom said. “In this day and age when physical activity and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is so important, projects like this one can make the world of difference. “How could you not want to go out for a stroll when the backdrop is as beautiful as this? “The purposebuilt exercise stations are a great addition too, offering users a variety of activities to test their strength and fitness along the way.” Mr Sidebottom acknowledged the $50,000 contribution from the Tasmanian Government towards this project. “I must also commend the WaratahWynyard Council and the local Lions Club for their financial contribution to this very worthwhile project,” he said. The new pathway, which extends along the foreshore to Arthur St, also links to the existing footpath at Falmouth St, Mr Sidebottom said. The Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program was created in November 2008 as part of the Rudd Government’s National BuildingEconomic Stimulus Plan. “We must not forget that in addition to providing a fantastic recreational space this project has also stimulated the local economy by supporting local jobs and through the purchase of local products wherever possible. Mr Sidebottom said the Rudd Government had delivered $3.788m to important community projects across the NorthWest Coast so far through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program. A further approximately $139,000 has also been committed for extensions to the East Wynyard walkway and Fossil Bluff walkway.
