It’s summer! Or is it? Though it seems we may have had most of our summer in April, we can still enjoy a sunny day here and there in our beautiful county of Kent. And anyways, who says we need sun to enjoy ourselves?
Our cover star, Natalie Portman (p48), has wowed us on screen in challenging roles such as her Academy Award-winning performance as Nina in Black Swan. Her newest role as ‘mum’ to her newborn baby boy may prove to be the most challenging (and rewarding) of all.
Before I go any further, I want to say a big ‘Happy Birthday’ to us! insideKENT is celebrating its first birthday in July - we launched last year (on 6th July to be exact), and what a year it’s been. Many, many thanks to our contributors and staff (you’re all awesome), and another huge thank you to our regular readers and subscribers. Here’s to many more years of insideKENT!
Speaking of celebs, check out our exclusive interview with Heart Breakfast’s Charlie O’Brien and James Heming (p90), or read Charlie’s column for all the latest and greatest on Kent and celebrity news(p12).
Obviously, it being summer and all, this issue is packed full of summery fun, from throwing the perfect BBQ (p61) to enjoying a day out at one of Kent’s free attractions (p70). Fancy a cold beer on a hot day? Pop in to one of Kent’s many pub gardens (p64), or have a meal at a fabulous seaside restaurant (p52). I particularly recommend Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant and Bar - the food and views are outstanding. June saw the launch of two very exciting venues in Kent - the Kent Cookery School at The Secret Garden near Ashford, and Rocksalt Restaurant & Bar in Folkestone. You can see photos of both launch evenings on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/insidekent), or visit their websites for more info at www.secretgardenkent.co.uk and www.rocksaltfolkestone.co.uk. Both are definitely worth a visit. Summertime is the perfect time to take a break from it all and escape the stresses of life. For a relaxing spa break, book a weekend at Brandshatch Place Hotel & Spa (p74), or if you’re one for true privacy, book a self-catering holiday cottage from Mulberry Cottages (p76). If you’re looking for an adventure, take a trip to Europe’s best-kept secret city break, Porto (p78).
From all of us at insideKENT, have a fabulous summer!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRADE IN EUROPE BUT NEED SOME HELP? THE 2 SEAS TRADE PROJECT CAN HELP. Research shows that companies which trade abroad grow more quickly and recover more easily after a recession. Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce is partnering Kent County Council, Business Support Kent and Locate in Kent in a new Interreg project called ‘The 2 Seas Trade’, which aims to assist Kent companies in developing trade links within the 2 Seas area. The 2 Seas area covers Kent, East and West Flanders, South West Netherlands and Northern France. The project will give businesses the tools and support to open those essential trading links. Free services and activities for Kent firms will include: • Support, advice and information on the Flemish, Dutch and French markets • Workshops and seminars on various aspects of trade in these areas • Individual meetings with an international trade advisor and selfassessment ‘tools’ • Trade missions to Flanders, the Netherlands and France • Opportunities to use the 2 Seas Trade stand at general and sector specific European trade fairs to meet potential clients and suppliers.
About the project The 2 Seas Trade (2ST) project is part financed by the EU Funded Interreg IVA 2 Seas Programme. 2ST aims to encourage and support SMEs in Kent, East & West Flanders (Belgium), South West Netherlands and Nord-Pas de Calais (France) to trade within these partner regions. The project will run from 2011-2013 and its partners include Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, Business Support Kent CIC, Locate in Kent, East Flanders Chamber of Commerce, West Flanders Chamber of Commerce, The West Flanders Development Agency (POM) and SW Holland Chamber of Commerce. Between them, the project partners have many years experience in helping companies trade internationally. The project will also facilitate access to advice from relevant private sector companies such as banks and translators. To find out more about the project and how you can get involved you can either call Kent Invicta Chamber on 01233 503838, email your interest to info@kentinvictachamber.co.uk, international.affairs@kent.gov.uk or visit www.2seastrade.eu
Who qualifies for support under the 2 Seas Trade project? Any Kent company wishing to enter these markets for the first time. Because of the similarities within the participating areas, the following sectors are of particular interest, but companies are welcome from all sectors: Business & Professional Services, Environmental Technology, Creative Industries, Logistics, Sustainable Construction, Food.

CHARLIE’S CHAT
KENT AND ARGENTINEAN VINEYARDS TEAM UP
England’s leading wine producer, Chapel Down, has teamed up with a top Argentinean vineyard to create a UK first – an English made Malbec wine. Malbec is a red wine, produced from Malbec grapes grown in Argentina, where the sun-drenched climate, high altitude and poor soils create ideal growing conditions for low-yielding high quality fruit. As we all get into the swing of a beautiful summer here in Kent, it’s been a busy few weeks for me and James at Heart, and it all started of course with the Royal wedding. The big news for the county was that Kent’s very own Chapledown wine was rumoured to be served at the wedding breakfast. James and I have been invited along to the vineyards in Tenterden to sample the wine apparently chosen by Wills and Kate (well if it’s good enough for the royals!) and to have a go at ‘sabrage’. Not sure what this is? Me neither…find out in my next column!
Chapel Down, the UK’s market leader in English wines, has joined forces with Gaucho Restaurants’ vineyard in Mendoza, to supply the Malbec grapes that will be used to create the Anglo-Argentine wine.
So the summer months mean many things for us here in the Garden of England – glorious beaches, flip flops and fresh Kentish strawberries. But it also means that the season of concerts, gigs and tours is underway and we’ve been awash with celebs popping in for a chat. Stephen Mulhern told us that not only is he enjoying another summer on the Britain’s Got Talent tour bus, but that he’s also really excited to be playing Buttons in panto at the new Marlowe Theatre opening in Canterbury this winter. Katherine Jenkins called us to have a chat about performing at Music on the Hill, and let us in to the secret that she keeps in such good shape by practicing Bikram Yoga. I told Katherine that my new favourite thing is Zumba, and I think I convinced her to give it a go! Stacey Solomon also stopped by to say hi and told us she’s really excited about performing at Live At The Castle at Leeds Castle in July. Stacey has thousands of followers on Twitter but told us she’s a bit clueless about how to use it, so James has promised her a crash course when we see her on the day (he’s just a complete flirt if I’m honest and is also a bit over-excited about seeing Eliza Doolittle who is performing as well!)
2,100 kilos of old vine Malbec grapes have been transported over 7,100 miles from Mendoza in Argentina to the Chapel Down winery in Tenterden. Chapel Down will crush and press the grapes to produce up to 2,000 bottles of this limited edition wine. The wine will then be aged by Chapel Down, ready to be released on Malbec World Day 2012, when it will available to buy at Chapel Down, in Gaucho Restaurants and at selected retailers around the UK.
Comedian Rory Bremner had us giggling in the studio a few weeks ago. During an interview about his tour dates he described his body shape as ‘yoghurt in a bin bag’! Yep, a Heart exclusive! It all stemmed from me describing James as being ‘keg shaped’. Bless him, I love him really. I’m discovering that some celebs can also be pretty handy. During a recent chat with Masterchef host John Torrode, he told James and our listeners how to make Guacamole, perfect for those summer BBQs. James was straight home making some that evening, and even brought some in for me the next day – and I have to say it was pretty good! Cheers Mr Torrode! Listen to Heart Breakfast with James and Charlie every weekday morning from 6am – 10am, or online at heart.co.uk You can also become a Facebook fan – www.facebook.com/heartkent and follow Charlie on Twitter @charlie_radio

The company’s CEO Frazer Thompson recently travelled to Mendoza, where he and Chapel Down’s assistant winemaker, Josh Donaghay-Spire, learned about working with Argentinean grapes and the techniques used to make a great Malbec wine.
Frazer Thompson said, “We are delighted to have chosen and given the chance to sharing our spirit of innovation with great winemakers in Argentina. We believe it’s an exciting project for all parties involved, and another international recognition of the quality of England’s winemaking.” For more information about Chapel Down please visit www.englishwinesgroup.com

MARK SARGEANT OPENS HIS MUCH-ANTICIPATED RESTAURANT ‘ROCKSALT’ IN FOLKESTONE
On 8th June 2011, acclaimed chef Mark Sargeant opened his first restaurant in the coastal town of Folkestone. Rocksalt sits on Folkestone’s harbour hovering over the water’s edge overlooking the day-boat fishermen as they moor their boats. This is one of Mark Sargeant’s first ventures since leaving Gordon Ramsay Holdings (during which he was awarded a Michelin Star at Claridges, assisted with the development of the company as well as Gordon’s books and TV work) and take him back home to Kent where both sites will contribute to the regeneration of this seaside town that has so much to offer.
head chef Simon Dyer work with key suppliers in the southeast on a daily basis ensuring that only the highest quality products arrive at Rocksalt’s kitchen. The team of chefs, in the fully equipped and visible kitchen where a Josper Grill takes pride of place, expertly prepare the seasonal ingredients creating classic and contemporary dishes, while specials are influenced by the day’s catch.
The produce-lead menu will offer dishes such as Smoked Coley Brandade, Dressed Crab with Harrisa and Toast, Josper Mussels, local Rock Oysters, Whelks and Cockles. Main dishes come with a choice of accompaniments such as Green Rocksalt Restaurant & Bar celebrates the finest Sauce, Peppercorn sauce or ‘Rocksalt Steak local produce and the best the British Isles has Sauce’, Spiced New Carrots, Braised Peas with to offer, whether from the farmland of Kent or Gem Lettuce or Runner Beans, and Minted the sea the restaurant overlooks. PAY AS YOU EARN B Y
I A N
M C I N T Y R E
ONLY PAYE DOESN’T ALWAYS LIVE UP TO ITS NAME One of the reasons HMRC are so keen to classify workers as employed rather than self-employed is that under the PAYE system, tax reaches the government's coffers much more quickly than it does under self assessment. But the system isn't perfect, as recent problems – many affecting pensioners – have shown. But it's not just pensioners who need to keep an eye on the tax that's already being deducted, and employees should be aware of the issues raised by this article.
or more than one employment are likely to have underpaid their tax, because HMRC's system doesn't cope with the necessary coding changes. More taxpayers are finding themselves required to submit a Self Assessment return for 2010/11, and whilst HMRC have said they will try to identify and write to those who are affected, you may wish to seek professional advice on this so you know what your tax position on the 31st January 2012 is likely to be.
OUT OF DATE CODING
CLAW BACK OF PERSONAL ALLOWANCE
Although the deadline for filing your self assessment return is 31 January following the end of the tax year, leaving it to the last minute means that any errors in your current year coding are unlikely to be corrected before the 5th April. This means that you may start the next tax year with a code that is up to two years old. The answer of course is to submit your returns a little earlier, but if that isn't possible to do then check your coding notice when it comes, especially if you receive benefits from your employer which may change year on year.
If you earn more than £100,000 per annum your personal allowance will be clawed back by £1 for every £2 of gross income earned in excess of £100,000. If HMRC are expecting you to receive this level of income then it may be reflected in your tax code but if your income has dropped in the current year then you may be taxed too aggressively. If, on the other hand, your income has increased to over £100,000 when it hadn't been at that level previously, then you are likely to pay too little tax through PAYE and this could leave you facing an unexpected tax bill.
If you rely on your accountant to check this for you, please bear in mind that HMRC no longer send out agent copies of coding notices and you will therefore need to forward these on for checking. Even if you are happy that your code is correct, do check your payslips to make sure that your employer is using the code that was issued.
50% TAXPAYERS
If you are concerned about any of the above issues and need advice on whether or not your coding notice is correct, then please contact Ian McIntyre on 01233 629255 or ian.mcintyre@wilkinskennedy.com

How long have you been in business? The main partners of Little Mulberry have been in business consultancy for over 20 years and agreed this year to join forces so that they can offer clients a full business package. All members of our team have attended the business school of life. What can you offer clients? A practical and common sense approach to the administration procedures and financial systems used within companies. By streamlining the administration we can make the business more focused, efficient, competitive and profitable. We offer a variety of support services including: • Business Health Check & Continuous Monitoring • Administrator Procedures and Financial Systems • Business Mentoring • Online Bookkeeping Services • Employee Training • Marketing & Business Development • Grant Applications • Business Plans and Cash Flow • Company Restructuring and Problem Solving What makes you stand out from your competition? We offer a full package which is hands-on; our aim being to help companies become more aware of their costs and put in online management systems including PAYE and accounts which in most cases would mean an accountant is not required. Being a one-stop shop means that all aspects of the business can be controlled more easily and communication with clients, employees and external professionals improves, which reflects in the company’s performance. What type of businesses do you help? SMEs and startup businesses that need guidance as to what works in small business. Many small business owners work alone and rarely take time out to sit down and reflect about their business as a whole. Very often new and

small businesses are so busy working in the business they fall behind with the administration side, which in turn impacts on the business. Most new businesses fail within the first six months for this reason alone. Having a business mentor is the ultimate support for SMEs and startups; they understand the language that banks and accountants use and they share the burden of worries and support them through all the day to day running of a business. As companies grow, funding is very important and implementing new systems enables the correct financial information to be readily available. We offer our services to all companies irrespective of size or services offered. Amongst past clients are the following: Builders, Foundry, Breweries, Supermarkets, Plant Hire, Restaurants, Traffic Management, Electrical Contractors, Waste Management, Leisure Centres and many others.

Litigation
LAW
– ONE LAW FOR THE RICH? by Ian Pinder
The media these days is full of stories about super-injunctions and libel claims. Many stories take the stance that these claims show that there is one law for the rich (or the super-rich these days) and another one for the rest of us. Litigation is expensive and there can be no doubting that if you have more money to spend than your opponent you will have an advantage. For one thing, you should be able to hire better lawyers! Litigation also involves a lot of paperwork and dealing with this is timeconsuming and resource-intensive. Limited financial resources can easily be stretched to the limit by an opponent who swamps you with paper and is willing to lodge applications for court orders they know they are unlikely to get. No matter how irrelevant the paperwork or hopeless the application, they can force you to have to deal with it - which costs you money.
Avoiding Litigation How can you prevent or limit the time and financial cost of Litigation? Most obviously, try not to get into litigation in the first place. If you do find yourself in a legal dispute, try and make sure your opponent is not a Russian oligarch or a dot.com billionaire! Many disputes can be avoided and almost any way of resolving an issue is going to be cheaper than litigation. Even if unsuccessful, making strong efforts to resolve disputes early will stand you in good stead in any later litigation.
If Litigation Is Unavoidable Assuming your efforts are unsuccessful, there are ways to try and ensure that a richer opponent does not get an unfair advantage. The rules governing how court cases are dealt with require that litigation is conducted in a manner that is reasonable, proportionate and that the parties are on an even footing as far as possible. The courts have various powers to help them try to achieve that aim. The court is always required to have regard to the cost of any step taken in litigation and whether the expense is worth the benefit. This means that if your opponent produces a mass of apparently pointless documents and expects you to wade through them to find the relevant piece of evidence, you could apply to the court for an order requiring them to restrict their disclosure to more reasonable and relevant amounts or apply for an order that your opponent pays your costs of wading through the documents.
The court can also make a costs-capping order which involves the court assessing the case and quantify the amounts and kinds of work are likely to be required on it and what this is reasonably likely to cost. The court then makes an order limiting the amount of costs one party can recover from the other. That may not prevent them from outspending you but it should ensure that most people take a more reasonable approach to costs and should at least mean that the amount of costs you have to pay is limited. None of the above will prevent a richer opponent from being able to outspend you but used properly, these ideas can ensure that you get a fair chance to put forward your case. At the end of the day, if you have a good case in the first place and lawyers who can put that case to the judge clearly and persuasively, that should be all you need.
Gardner Croft LLP has years of experience in helping people caught up in litigation achieve their aims as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. If you need advice or representation, contact Ian Pinder on 01227 813400 or via our website at www.gardnercroft.co.uk

HOME+GARDEN
KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR HOME
BY PAUL BATCHELOR, DIRECTOR AND HEAD DESIGNER AT KEYSPACES KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS
WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING TO BUY A HOUSE, MOST PEOPLE’S ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS. THIS IS PARTLY BECAUSE OTHER ROOMS, SUCH AS THE BEDROOMS AND LIVING AREAS, CAN BE EASILY ADAPTED TO SUIT YOUR PERSONAL TASTE WITH YOUR OWN FURNITURE AND A LICK OF PAINT. IT IS ALSO BECAUSE BATHROOMS ARE OFTEN VIEWED AS A SANCTUARY OF CALM AND EVEN LUXURY, AND THE KITCHEN IS, FOR MANY, THE HEART OF THE HOME; WE COOK HERE, WE EAT HERE, WE ROW HERE, WE LAUGH HERE, WE ENTERTAIN HERE, WE CRY HERE (ONIONS MOSTLY) – WE LIVE HERE.
In the current economic climate, where fewer people are choosing to move, many homeowners who decide to stay put but still want to change their living environment, have tended to look at improving their current house instead. Interestingly, however, with respect to kitchens, we are seeing a lot less people with an ‘out with the old – in with the new’ strategy, as savvy homeowners take a broader view of their situation. As a result, more people are tending to consider the entire space within their property and look at how this can be best adapted or extended to suit their lifestyle. They may choose to convert two rooms into one, larger space, for example, or add a conservatory or orangery to create a breakfast area with additional seating for relaxed coffee mornings. Alternatively, they may decide to extend the whole property to cater for impending children or growing teenagers. Reasons abound, but in general we all want more - if not more userfriendly - space.
With this is in mind, it is important to consider the project as a whole and get all the necessary elements working in harmony. So where better to start than at the end? By spending more time upfront exploring, visualising and determining your desired end state, you are more likely to achieve your dream home. You need to ask yourself fundamental questions such as ‘What do you want the space for?’, ‘Do you eat al fresco as much as possible?’, ‘Does the inside need to flow seamlessly with the outside?’, ‘Does your kitchen face north and you need more light?’. The list of questions may seem endless, but it can be a powerful tool for helping you understand what you really want. All too often we have seen the process tackled the other way round, where the space has been pre-determined and only then does the homeowner go in search of the designer to create their vision. Often this option leaves the homeowner with their ‘dream’ constrained. However, by involving a designer at the beginning
of the project they, along with the architect, builder and the other specialists, are able to work as a cohesive team from the outset, with the common aim of building the ‘dream’. A tailored dress or suit is exactly that; a tailored combination of form and function. A beautiful garment created individually for you. It should fit perfectly while stationary, but also be created with comfort and ease of movement in mind. At KeySpaces, we don’t think it’s too much to ask that your house should be created to have the same effect.

Home or Away this Summer? Prepare To Get Your Garden Ready!
SUMMER GARDENING MADE EASY The summer months traditionally see many of us jetting off to warmer climates for some relaxation and leaving our gardens to fend for themselves. But before you get packing the sunscreen and beach hat, spare a thought for your soon-to-be-neglected garden and leave it in the best possible condition for your return. Oliver Locke, plant manager at Dobbies Garden World, Ashford, has given insideKENT some top tips on how to get your garden holiday-ready. Oliver highlights that the most important thing is to keep your garden hydrated through the long warm summer days. “Before I go on holiday I always make sure I stand all of my hanging baskets in buckets of water in a support which is sheltered from the elements allowing them to absorb water when they need it. “I also transfer my potted plants from small pots to larger ones as the extra compost will hold more water and stop them from drying out and place them in shade as it reduces their water requirements. Before you head off make sure you also mow your lawn and coax a friendly neighbour into watering whilst you’re away.” Oliver also suggests that once you’re back the first thing to do is to begin dead-heading your baskets, tubs, bedding, roses and other plants to breathe some life back into your garden. For those of us who aren’t getting away, August provides the perfect opportunity to sit back and enjoy your garden in the sunshine. Dobbies Garden World, Ashford has everything you need to create your own little summer paradise including chimneas, barbeques, gazebos and our nauticalinspired products which will allow you to create your own little piece of the seaside in your garden.
The new Dobbies Garden World in Ashford is on a mission to show people just how quick, cheap and easy gardening can be. Through exciting plants and gardening ranges and friendly green-fingered staff who provide simple and straightforward advice, Dobbies in Ashford can help you make your garden blooming marvellous this summer.

GROOMING
WANT TO LOOK HOT WEARING SUNGLASSES?
Overnight stubble can be an ongoing battle. Beware of the ‘rugged cowboy look’; it can look good on some, but you really need to be very clear-eyed and fresh looking to pull it off. Make sure your facial hair is looking neat and well kept, and if you’re sporting a goatee it must be even and precise.
CELEBRITY GUYS CAN LOOK SO COOL IN THEIR SHADES, BUT DON’T FORGET THESE GUYS ARE DRESSED BY A TEAM OF STYLISTS! WEARING SHADES IN SUMMER CAN BE A NECESSITY, ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE POLLEN AND VOLCANIC DUST.
SHAVING IS THE AGE-OLD GRIPE
I have discovered a fabulous range of shaving products called Bluebeards Revenge (www.bluebeardsrevenge.co.uk). They have a revolutionary paraben-free shaving cream containing decelerine. The packaging is really unusual and exciting and the bristle brush helps you achieve a super smooth and quality shave. Have a problem with ingrown hair? A strict cleansing routine will help, and don’t use products that are too harsh as they strip the skin of its natural oils. Simple (www.simple.co.uk) do a nice product range which you can buy in most chemists. The men’s hydrating facial wash is a good one, followed by their hydrating daily moisturiser. Try to exfoliate the skin every other day as this gets rid of clingy dead skin cells. You can also ask at any of the Boots counters for help on products. Try to get a daily routine and stick to it to get the best results. Remember your skin is the largest living organ of your body and needs to be hydrated and taken care of, so drink plenty of water daily.

THIS SUMMER THE MAXI-DRESS REIGNS SUPREME, AND DOWN BY THE SEA IN HYTHE, IT'S THE PERFECT OUTFIT FOR THOSE SUNSHINE WALKS ALONG THE BEACH. COMPLIMENTED WITH THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES, A BOLD NECKLACE OR SOME EYE-CATCHING SUNGLASSES, THIS DRESS CAN REALLY MAKE HEADS TURN AND ICE CREAMS DROP INTO LAPS. OUR MODEL BEFORE
Our makeover model Kate is a local school mum in her mid-thirties, who like most women in her situation has a busy, tiring time attempting to juggle family with career. A big fan of shoes, Kate was looking for a light summery look that made a statement, whilst also allowing her bubbly, lively personality to shine through.
THE HAIR
You glow girl On a summer's day a healthy glow makes you feel better; an easy way to achieve this look is with bronzing powder. Find one that suits your skin tone and don't over do it or you will look like an orange! Subtle and sun-kissed is the key.
THE MAKEUP
It's in her eyes Eye shadows in lighter, more neutral shades are perfect for the summer. On hotter days just a touch of mascara will bring your face to life. For a more summery look use brown or brown-black.
Local stylists, Salon 13, provided the perfect hairstyle for this summery theme. Loose curls add volume and bounce, and framed Kate's face perfectly, whilst also reflecting the loose flowing feel given by those summery dresses.
The multi-talented Joanna Lane added to the look with a collection of summer shades to provide Kate with a subtle yet stunning makeover. Jo's personal tips for summer makeup awesomeness: Lighten up a bit In warmer weather for fresher, less heavy skin, swap foundation for tinted moisturizer and a tiny dab of concealer under the eye for extra radiance.

SUMMER Beauty JUST LIKE WINTER, SUMMER REQUIRES ITS OWN BEAUTY TRICKS TO KEEP YOU LOOKING FRESH AND FLAWLESS THROUGHOUT THESE SIZZLING SUMMER MONTHS. NOBODY WANTS TO LOOK OR FEEL CAKED IN MAKEUP, ESPECIALLY ON THE HOTTEST OF DAYS. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN WORRYING ABOUT YOUR MAKEUP MELTING, SO FEAR NO MORE, FOR I HAVE DEVISED A FOOL-PROOF HEAT WAVE SURVIVAL LOOK THAT CANNOT FAIL TO KEEP YOU LOOKING RADIANT AND FEELING BEAUTIFUL. BY GEMMA MORPURGO
YOUR FACE • To a cleansed and toned face, apply a little Matt Crème by MAC. Its super absorbent properties will stop your face from looking greasy throughout the day. • In place of a foundation, why not opt for a tinted moisturiser? Tinted moisturisers are sheer and lightweight, with most having a built in SPF, so you have UV protection and beauty all rolled into 1! If, however, you do require a little more coverage than a tinted moisturiser offers, a great tip is to mix a little of your favourite moisturiser in with your usual foundation. • If your skin has a tendency to become shiny and dewier than you would like, then get yourself some Blot Film, also available by MAC. This film can be used to gently dab your skin and soak up any excess oils. This is great to tuck away into your beach bag. • To keep the dewy skin theme going I would absolutely recommend a crème blusher. They are easy to work into the skin as well as looking natural and healthy.
YOUR EYES • Before applying shadow (if any), prime the eyes using MAC Paint Pots (available in a huge array of shades, textures and finishes). This eye shadow goes on as a cream, and dries to a powder. This process reduces creasing and is super hardwearing; perfect on the hottest of days. • If you feel the need for something a little bolder on your eyes, then blend a little shadow on the lid on top of where the paint has been applied. Using the Paint Pot as a base for the shadow will encourage the shadow to adhere to the skin for a longer period of time and definitely will not crease.

• A white kohl eye pencil in the water line is very much on trend this season. It gives a fresh wide-eyed result; perfect for those of you who would like your eyes to look bigger. • Team this with volumising waterproof mascara and you cannot fail to impress the other sun worshippers! If, however, you are someone who likes to stand out and make more of a statement, then why not give yellow eye shadow a go? You can wear this as a vivid shade or a wash of colour; it’s guaranteed to turn heads, and blended with orange looks incredible! This duo works perfectly with any eye colour, and is very in keeping with the current season.
YOUR NAILS Last but not least, it is important to have well-polished feet, especially in summer. Flip flops are far from forgiving, so be sure to paint your toenails in a bright pink or orange varnish. These colours work great against most skin tones and actually help to create the illusion that you are more tanned than you really are.

insideKENT’s Adam Ready gets ready for summer with personal trainer Katie Bevan and sports massage therapist Charlet Crichton
My first meeting with personal trainer Katie was a bit nerve-wracking as I waited to find out how fit (or unfit!) I was, but at the same time I was really looking forward to a healthier lifestyle. With an ardour for health, a lust for knowledge and determination to succeed, Katie is a highly respected and sought-after personal trainer, studio instructor and lecturer in psychology and fitness. Whether it’s kicking ass in Body Combat or a biomechanics assessment, it’s Katie’s passion for what she does that shines through. I had a personal goal to lose around one stone in weight and strengthen my legs and core muscles for a one-day football tournament I had entered. Working behind a desk most of the day has made it harder to burn extra calories and the pounds had crept on. I decided that I needed professional help! My first session with Katie was to talk about my goals and the results I would like to achieve. Part of the initial assessment was checking my weight,
42
www.insidekentmagazine.co.uk
blood pressure, resting heart rate, body measurements and overall current fitness. I was on the lower end of average and had areas of weakness such as very tight hamstrings and instability through the legs and knees which I put down to years of playing Sunday league football. On our second meeting, Katie introduced me to her new PT Lite package. The six-week package is all about giving focus and motivation, but you also have to be dedicated and knuckle down to see results. Katie went through my bespoke gym plan aimed at fat loss, football strength and stamina. Katie showed me how to do each activity in the gym and talked me through what muscle groups are used and how they would help reach my goal.
The next part of the package was a detailed food and sports specific nutrition plan. In my initial assessment I had to tell Katie what I had eaten over the previous 3 days. From this she had an idea of what I liked to eat and planned healthier versions of my normal diet into my food diary, giving me a greater chance of sticking to my plan. I thought I would be starved for the next 6 weeks but this was not the case; I was now eating much more than before. Katie explained that a balanced plan of the right foods will help weight loss while training. Our bodies need fuel to burn and by eating the correct food, especially after an hour’s workout or just when our bodies are hungry, is the right thing to do. In my PT Lite package, Katie had included her own healthy recipes and food guidelines to read through. Over the next two to four weeks I met up with Katie for a few sessions and she also introduced some new exercises to test my progress and push me that little bit further. It was great to be motivated by someone who really wanted to help get the best out of me. I would visit the gym first thing most mornings as it was a quiet time to go through my plan, and I also took part in my usual RPM cycling classes. As the weeks went on I started to feel better in myself, had more energy and was up and ready to hit the gym before work (which I don’t think I could ever have done before starting PT Lite). I was drinking more water, eating well and enjoyed the colourful salads and lean meats which made up part of my food plan. In my last few sessions before final review Katie pushed me harder and gave me a much-needed perseverance boost to do the best I could. I was looking forward to finding out if all the hard work and dedication had paid off. When assessment day arrived, I felt good but still wondered if I had made real progress. We went through the same steps as the initial assessment. I started with a bit of cardio work to get my heart rate and blood pressure going. Both had improved to a good healthy level from just below average before I started. My clothes had started to feel too big and Katie confirmed I had shed 10lb, which was an inch off all my body measurements. My cardio fitness and core strength had improved by over 50% in some areas. My incredibly tight hamstrings had greatly improved and I could now stretch six inches further. Throughout my six weeks Katie was always at the end of a phone or available by email or Skype. Full of energy, her enthusiasm and real love of fitness and healthy eating is inspiring and key to helping her clients achieve results. Katie also runs weekly Zumba classes in Whitfield and Hawkhurst and is now starting ladies-only boot camps in Dover, Tenterden and Tunbridge Wells. While training hard in the gym for 6 weeks, I was worried about getting injured if I wasn’t stretching correctly or from overuse of my muscles. I would
not have been very happy if I missed my big football day that I was working so hard for. I decided to visit qualified therapist Charlet Crichton of Folkestone Sports Massage Therapy to find out how she could help me alongside my training. Sports massage therapy uses a combination of treatments to regain or maintain the health of muscle, prevent injury, increase mobility and range of movement, and improve tone and posture. Although used primarily to aid sporting performance and complement physical fitness, treatment can be beneficial for a wide range of people of all ages and abilities and not just athletes, as it is tailored specifically to each individual. Deep tissue massage combined with stretching and strengthening exercises to restore the balance of muscle and soft tissue can be of benefit to many people suffering many 'common' conditions such as RSI (repetitive strain injury); back, neck and shoulder pain; postural dysfunction; sciatica; tennis/golfers elbow; 'shin splints'; sprains and strains; whiplash; fibrosis and many more. Techniques used can be varied and differ with each person depending on the individual, and can include a combination of active and passive stretches, neuromuscular techniques, soft tissue release and deep frictioning, and infrared or intrasound therapy. After an initial consultation, a postural assessment may be carried out whereby any imbalances in the muscle or tone may be observed and taken into consideration when deciding which treatment plan will be best suited to the individual.
Zenity Health and Fitness Katie Bevan 07798 626 696 info@zenityheathandfitness.com ww.zenityheathandfitness.com
Treatments can vary between half an hour to an hour and a half, although most last around an hour. Follow up home care advice including examples of helpful stretches to maximise recovery and prevent further damage will be given and demonstrated to ensure the client has the knowledge to help themselves. For the sporting client, a regular sports massage can help to keep your body in shape as you prepare for an event. As well as aiding recovery from training, sports massage can help with your performance by improving blood flow, improving muscle tension and preparing mentally and physically for the big day. To improve performance and efficiency of the whole body aim to have a sports massage about 7 days prior to the event and a relaxing post-event massage in the week after to aid recovery. Treatments offered include • Sports Massage Therapy • Relaxational Swedish Massage • Exercise Advice • Infrared Heat Therapy • Intrasound Therapy • G5 Massage (Mechanical massager used by many professionals to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, aid lymphatic drainage and increase circulation)

Special Feature: Breast Augmentation with John Davison IN AN EVER-CYNICAL WORLD, BREAST OPERATIONS ARE OCCASIONALLY TREATED WITH DERISION, AND MAYBE PERCEIVED AS ONLY PRACTISED ON A CERTAIN TYPE OF PERSON. THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH, AS MANY WOMEN SUFFER DISCONTENTMENT WITH THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF THEIR BREASTS AND WANT TO CHANGE HOW THEY LOOK AND FEEL.
As one of the most frequently performed operations by plastic surgeons, breast augmentation can transform lives and emotional wellbeing, restoring self-confidence and assurance with their femininity. With this in mind, knowing some of the motivations behind having an operation, our resident Plastic Surgeon, John Davison, reveals more. In your experience what are the most popular procedures? I carry out a large number of breast operations but a breast augmentation is the most common operation in my practice. Breast augmentation is more commonly referred to as breast enlargement, or “boob job”. The operation involves putting an implant either under the breast tissue, or more commonly under the chest muscle. It is fair to say that patients are usually very pleased with the outcome. What are the main motivations cited for having an operation? I suppose there are two groups really. Those women who have always been small breasted, or have had unequal breasts, and those who have lost volume and shape following pregnancy. For many it is the pressure of wanting to be able to buy, and wear, clothing and swimwear without the stress, frustration and disappointment. In my practice most women ‘just want to be proportionate’. How would the initial consultation work and would there be post-op consultations? The consultation is like all my cosmetic surgery consultations. Most importantly, it is an opportunity for patients to meet and chat to me. I want to find out a little about them, their motivations and what they would ideally be wanting so that I can make the best assessment. I will examine them, and then we sit down and thrash it out together.
It’s always the same pattern. We discuss how the operation works and what we can realistically achieve. Then we discuss the hospital pathway, the recovery, the return to work, childcare and exercise. Thirdly we talk about the risks and potential problems; how often they can happen and what would happen if they did. Finally we will discuss the long term considerations, which is the most important consideration in breast augmentation surgery.
aging, elasticity and stretchiness. These are the factors which are decision making.
Essentially, I aim to give prospective patients the whole package of information to help them decide whether surgery may be right for them.
John Davison has a busy and well-established plastic surgical practice based in central and east Kent and is on the GMC Specialist register in Plastic Surgery.
Are there any factors that may affect the procedure, recovery and final result? Making decisions about types and sizes of implants, and the different ways of doing the operation itself, very much influences the result; both early after surgery and in the very long term. I would be trying to get a patient as close as I can to the result she would like, whilst also weighing up the best outcome, not only now, but in the future too. How long is the usual hospital stay and would there be much pain or discomfort, if so, for how long? For this operation it is a one-night stay. Most plastic surgical operations are not particularly painful and most women can be reasonably back to normal after a week. It is always interesting to me how this varies from patient to patient. The breasts do always look a little crazy and scary during the first weeks and I think it takes 6 to 8 weeks to really feel comfortable and settled. You can always feel the underlying implant, but breasts can look and feel very normal.
How soon can normal activity resume e.g. physical activity? Most women are able to drive within a week. After 6 weeks I’m happy for my patients to return to bungee jumping and rugby.

On a sunny Tuesday, I made my way through the rural idyll of Goudhurst for my session at the Kalmora Spa. I was invited to try few of the spa’s most popular treatments and despite being so early on in the week, I was ready for them. My first experience was for a full session in the hydrofloatation pool. Unlike many of the more claustrophobic floatation pods available for use at other spas, Kalmora’s pool was more like stepping into a large welcoming bath set in an enormous private bathroom. After a shower using the complimentary products, I slipped into the ambient waters of the pool, dimmed the lights and began to unwind. Despite my bottom providing me with the kind of natural buoyancy the RNLI would be proud of, I initially found myself rigid in the pool for fear of sinking. However, my fears were quickly alleviated as I remembered my teachings from the very calming Spa Therapist. “The Dead Sea Salts in the water allow you to float weightlessly without any conscious effort.” And she was right. With the aid of both the restful Japanese music and the gentle water movements, I quickly found myself drifting and relaxing. Providing a dual purpose, the salts allow the relaxation of joints and muscles while minimising the pull of gravity and also help relieve a variety of skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and congested skin. After 20 minutes of exposure, the salts begin to penetrate the skin and bloodstream where they remain for up to six hours, hydrating and detoxifying. After a dreamy 40 minutes the jets in the pool began, signalling that it was time to get out. Stepping out of the water, gravity suddenly returned and I walked back to the shower to wash off all those lovely minerals. My advice? Keep the water well out of your eyes, and for that matter, your mouth (I speak from experience). It may promote a sense of well being, but it’s not meant for drinking and it sure doesn’t taste good! I lazily pulled on a soft Kalmora bathrobe and slippers, and made my way to the treatment rooms where I began the arduous task of testing the Spa Find Peace Hot Stone Massage and the Fingertip Face Lift Facial.
The massage began with a warm foot and hand compress and from there continued with a full body massage using hot polished Hawaiian stones. A typical massage wouldn’t require the use of any other tools than the occasional product and the therapist’s expert hands. In the case of this treatment, the weight of the stones, their smooth surface area and the heat they radiated made the experience both stimulating and therapeutic. Although not my finest hour, I don’t mind admitting that on more than one occasion I woke up with an unladylike snort after the restful massaging sent me off to sleep. Maxine, my therapist, was very diplomatic about the incident and I couldn’t help but wonder how many other dozing customers she’d seen wake in a similarly conspicuous fashion. We continued to the Fingertip Face Lift Facial which promised to give amazing face-lifting results. A mixture between a facial and massage, the treatment uses the principals of Chinese acupressure, Ayurveda and Reiki. The whole process took 90 minutes and included a very therapeutic seaweed mask, exfoliation and an anti-ageing radiance mask. The two treatments were a well-suited combination that meant a truly top to toe experience. All spas should be relaxing and a place to take your time, but what I found particularly great about the Kalmora Spa was that this easy attitude wasn’t limited to just the customer. My therapist effectively combined the oftenopposing traits of being efficient yet unhurried. The service provided by the ladies at the spa was exceptional but it was Maxine and her colleagues’ contributions to the easy-going atmosphere that made it extraordinary.

Many actresses in Hollywood can be described in just a few words; their acting style and personality characterised in a mere sentence. Natalie Portman, however, walks into a room and just one glance tells you that no one can put her in that box. Her smile beams and her face lights with a countenance that overwhelms everything else around her. While her beauty is undeniable, her personality is unassuming and almost boyish in nature. Her eyes shine and her tiny frame (a mere 5’3) portray perfection both in style and class and prove why she has been called the new Audrey Hepburn. A high acclamation to be sure, but ironic to the girl who admits among her favorite things are her comfy sweats, t-shirts and old school hip-hop.

Natalie Hershlag was born on 9th June 1981 in Jerusalem, Israel, as the only child to an Israeli father and an American mother. Though born in Israel, her family settled in New York when she was merely three years old. She spent most of her life there until very recently when she decided to make the big switch to southern California. Portman, a dual citizen of the United States and Israel, has said that although she "really loves the States... my heart's in Jerusalem. That's where I feel at home." She speaks not only Hebrew and English (her native languages) fluently, but also some conversational French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. At school, Portman graduated with honours and her academic achievements allowed her to attend Harvard University in Boston to earn a Bachelors Degree in psychology. Impressive? She isn’t done there. She has said that one day she would like to be a doctor like her father. Portman made her cogent film debut in 1994 in the film Léon. Following this, Natalie won roles in films such as Heat, Beautiful Girls, and Tim Burton’s infamous Mars Attacks! . In 1999, Portman’s name became a household name when she played the role of Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I, the prequel that grossed US $431mil. Portman opened in New York City's Public Theater production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull and then went on to many other film roles that included shaving her head and learning to speak with a British accent for her starring role in V for Vendetta. This venture was followed by a group of independent and smaller films that displayed her long reach and depth such as My Blueberry Nights. Among her many awards and acting accomplishments (over 60, including two Academy Awards), Natalie’s directorial debut, Eve, opened the 65th Venice International Film Festival's shorts competition in 2008 and showed the critics that she was capable of branching out in her artistic talent in more ways than one. She has continued to do so with not only directing, but producing new projects such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In 2011, Portman’s lead performance as Nina in Black Swan won an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and BAFTA Award, making her Hollywood’s hottest female actress. Her training for Black Swan was a total transformation in both mind and body and was no short feat. Natalie says, “I think I learned how much I could take on. I started a year ahead of time, doing ballet with my trainer for two hours a day. Six months before filming we went to five hours a day and added a mile a day of swimming. Two months before filming we went to eight hours a day and added in the choreography.” While filming Black Swan she found love with Benjamin Millepied, a dancer with the New York Ballet. Although quiet about her personal love life, she cannot hide the glow that is behind her eyes. “I don’t feel people really need to know about my private life, but I’m also not really guarded so it’s a weird combination.” Never resting on her laurels, Portman’s next film was No Strings Attached with Ashton Kutcher,
released January 2011. The romantic comedy ran the theme of ‘friends with benefits’, a total 180-degree turn from the dramatic Black Swan. When asked why she chose the role, she remarked, “The script had a character that was funny, with a real job and a real voice. Romantic comedy is actually my favorite genre, but I hadn’t done it before so they didn’t really trust me. We had to fight to get the film made.” Not only did she prove to the studio executives she could hold her own in the laughs department, she also served as a producer on the project. Portman says her comedic influences are Lily Tomlin and Diane Keaton. "I love Lily Tomlin and I love Diane Keaton. They're sort of my heroes. Diane Keaton can do anything. She's just the best there is."
James Franco and Danny McBride, seemed like the most unexpected move any actress could make. Always original, she showed the public that she was not afraid to laugh at herself and was not a stuffed shirt when it came to comedy. She pushed her popularity over the top playing the role of Jane Foster in Kenneth Branagh's superhero smash film, Thor. Portman didn't read the original Thor comic books until she was cast in the movie. The actress admits that she got into graphic novels after filming her 2006 movie, V for Vendetta, "I'm not really a comic book fan, I got sort of into graphic novels when I did V for Vendetta, and for this movie, once I sort of started thinking about doing it, I started reading all the Thor comic books. They're so seventies with, like, the rainbow bridge. They're sort of weird, hippie comic books."

ALTHOUGH PORTMAN DOES NOT CONSIDER HERSELF A ROLE MODEL, SHE IS VERY ACTIVE IN THE CAUSES SHE BELIEVES IN AND STANDS BEHIND THEM.
Her fresh point of view helped her contribute to shaping her character, working with the writers and director on her role. About her role as Jane Foster, Portman says, “The fact that she’s a scientist and on the fringe of mainstream science and is almost this absent-minded professor type with her devotion to her work, I felt you haven’t really seen that as a female before. She’s emotional and passionate and kind of a mess. To be able to see that kind of woman in this type of movie, I thought that would be something exciting.” Although Portman does not consider herself a role model, she is very active in the causes she believes in and stands behind them. An advocate for animal rights, she has been a vegetarian since childhood and became a vegan in 2009 after reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. She also doesn’t wear fur, feathers, or leather. "All of my shoes are from Target and Stella McCartney," she has said. In 2008, she launched her own brand of vegan footwear through Te Casan, donating all her proceeds to the Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit that works tirelessly to protect ecologically fragile lands and bodies of water. In 2004 and 2005, she traveled to Uganda, Guatemala, and Ecuador as the ambassador of Hope for FINCA International, an organization that promotes micro-lending to help finance women-owned businesses in developing countries. In the fall of 2007, she visited several university campuses, including Harvard, USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton, New York University, and Columbia to inspire students and to encourage them to join the Village Banking Campaign to help families and communities lift themselves out of poverty. She is also a member of One Voice, an international grassroots movement that amplifies the voice of mainstream Israelis and Palestinians. One Voice works to forge consensus for conflict resolution and build a human infrastructure capable of mobilising the people toward a negotiated, comprehensive and permanent agreement between Israel and Palestine.
Most recently she and her fiancé joined more than 100,000 people in the Freedom to Marry campaign. The campaign was launched on 14th March with an open letter signed by prominent Americans, including Hollywood stars, musicians, civil rights leaders, and business leaders to President Obama calling him to become part of America's majority who support the freedom to marry. The campaign believes all loving couples should be able to share in the freedom to marry without discrimination. On 17th May, Portman’s newest project, The Other Woman, was released on DVD and BD from IFC Films and MPI Media. An adult relationship drama in which she plays Emilia, a law-school graduate who falls in love with her married boss, Jack (Scott Cohen), senior partner at the law firm where she is an associate. Her diversity and depth is displayed across the screen and it seems as if she opens her soul once again to the audience and brings them to a place that only she can. After her string of recently completed films, Portman is ready to take a break and spend her time with family. Having just recently given birth to a baby boy, she isn't in a rush to get back to work, but when she does, the actress is looking for an even bigger challenge. "I'm so in baby land, I haven't even been thinking about it, but I have been thinking recently about how it would be fun to do something in another language because I feel like that would be a different kind of challenge." Her infectious luminosity is all you need to see that Natalie Portman is revelling in her bliss and her new role as a mother, her greatest challenge of all. There is no doubt she will excel at this newest chapter in her life as she does in all her ventures.

THE MINNIS BAR & RESTAURANT by Charlotte Ready
Situated quite literally a stone's throw from the beach, the Hythe Bay Seafood Restaurant & Bar provides an exciting combination of traditional good honest seafood, combined cleverly with more modern cuisine. Using the finest locally caught produce means that the food on offer is as fresh as the sea breeze that blows through the light and spacious restaurant. The sign of a really good restaurant is when you feel able to take a risk with your order and try something new. This was certainly true about my visit to Hythe Bay, and I was happy to try something I've never had before – Moules Mariniere - a very generous bowlful of mussels as my starter. Presented beautifully in all their natural shellfish splendour, cooked to perfection complimented with shallots and a delicious soupy base, I was definitely not disappointed with my choice. For my main course I enjoyed a relatively new option on the Hythe Bay menu – Pan-Fried Salmon. This was cooked perfectly with a delicious crispy skin and just the right amount of bite in the fish. Presented superbly with warm new potatoes and French beans, the flavours of the fish were really brought out with spring onions and an absolutely delicious roasted red pepper and tomato salsa. It looked beautiful as it arrived at my table, but didn't last very long – utterly delicious and highly recommended. Just a few minutes walk from the main town of Hythe, and ample parking all around means that this is a very accessible restaurant. However it also proves to be very popular, so you will need to book plenty of time in advance to avoid missing a most memorable meal by the sea.

Located next to the sandy beach overlooking Minnis Bay at Birchington, The Minnis Bar & Restaurant is a busy and bustling seafood restaurant with an outdoor seafood bar for beach takeaways. Fish and chips seemed to be the order of the day when I visited during a busy half-term lunch service, and it was easy to see why; a huge fillet of salt and vinegar battered cod with chips and a colourful, generous dressed salad for a very reasonable £11. With starters such as British Mackerel fillet, King Scallops, Rock Oysters and Rope Grown Scottish Mussels, we were in a seafood lover’s heaven; however, it was the Home Produce Plate for two that we finally settled on. Our waitress proudly explained that restaurant owner Jason and his team had been potting, curing, pickling, smoking, salting, spicing and marinating dishes using traditional methods throughout the winter and we couldn’t wait to try this thoroughly homemade dish. And wow, we weren’t disappointed. A wonderful sociable sharing platter of cured meats, salamis, salt beef, corned beef, pastrami, bacon, Ramsgate herring, potted crab, pickled vegetables, chutneys and all mopped up with freshly baked farmhouse bread. This unique dish was an absolute treat. The main courses had a tough act to follow and we were very tempted by the sumptuous seafood platters on offer, but hoping to squeeze in a dessert we settled on the Roast Monkshill Farm Free Range Chicken Breast with chilli-infused hazelnuts, roasted new potatoes, shallots, leeks, baby carrots, and chicken & chive vinaigrette; and ‘Today’s Fresh Fish Dish’ of baked fillet of Black Bream with creamy prawn sauce. After finishing our flavoursome mains, we chose the daily special for dessert – The Minnis Platter – an assiette of the chef’s freshest home made desserts. Mini portions of vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb and almond filo, Bailey’s ice cream, apple tart and brandy snap, berry jelly with rhubarb foam and a mojito jelly were an indulgent end to an indulgent meal!

Rowhill Grange exudes pleasure; the grounds are picturesque, the building heart-warmingly romantic and the staff glow like a well-stoked fire. Every element has been carefully considered to ensure the overall package is truly memorable.
We were warmly greeted and seated at a small table – Champagne at the ready – to peruse the menu. There was a hum of acceptance as my fellow diners felt their choices call out from the perfectly selected meals.
Pulling in from the tarmac to the long gravel drive only heightens the expectation, until the venue comes into view and your stomach leaps in anticipation. Tree dappled pasture and extended lawns stretch out like welcoming arms to draw you in to the splendour of the location.
RG’s boasts several eating areas and function rooms which can provide sanctuary for small dinner parties, hen nights or other gatherings.
The ambience inside is mellow to say the least. The mission here is to relax and indulge, so you find yourself amongst a gaggle of happily pampered punters. Couples roam the beautifully landscaped grounds in bathrobes, high on life, intoxicated from spa treatments, gazing lovingly about them, beaming with self satisfaction. Built in 1868, the estate enjoys 15 acres of private grounds which can be explored during your stay. The multi-award winning venue is the perfect wedding setting or a sanctuary for the more romantically inclined. Business and corporate, as well as charity and fundraising events are well catered for in the award-winning, state of the art facilities. As you enter the building you are embalmed in refined decadence. Sensuous wood, richly painted walls and opulent furniture give a warm feel while thoughtful use of light swims through the rooms, creating a different mood in each area.
We were led to the Orangerie, a beautiful light and airy room, tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished. White linen tablecloths were radiant in the light of the room, and the thick cream leather chairs embraced you as you relaxed into them. Having already ordered, we absorbed the atmosphere of the room while our starters were placed before us: Jerusalem Artichoke Soup, Traditional Prawn Cocktail, Crab & Asparagus Lasagne and Roasted Scallops. The soup was aromatic and hearty, the prawn cocktail crisp and creamy, the crab and asparagus lasagne danced daintily across your taste buds and the roasted scallops were chosen by Neptune himself. The portions are perfectly sized leaving us happily satisfied and ready for more. We sat eagerly, cutlery poised for the next instalment: Free Range Chicken with Peppercorn Sauce, with Hand-cut Chips and Mushroom Stuffed Tomato. When my knife slipped through the chicken with such little effort, I knew I was in for
a treat. Succulent. Tender beyond words. “This isn’t any chicken, this is RG’s chicken,” to coin a line. My fellow diners enjoyed a 6oz Prime Centre Cut Fillet with Truffle & Tarragon Butter, Butter Poached South Coast Lobster and RG's Mixed Grill which included succulent chicken, tender lamb, sausage and fine steak. All were exactly what we expected from RG’s – delicious. We were allowed to wallow in our satisfied bliss while our stomachs settled enough to accommodate our last course: dessert. My Rhubarb Soufflé was fruity, light and delicate on the palette. The perfect end to the evening. My tablemates chose Coffee Panna Cotta (thick and creamy), Hot Chocolate Fondant (dreamy, rich and dark) and Open English Apple Tart – the old favourite, rich and buttery with hints of cinnamon and caramel. Exquisite. We took tea and coffee while we recollected the glorious evening and took a last look over our venue. We lingered as long as possible; to savour the ambience, but finally stole away into the night happy and satisfied.

With my taste buds aroused and my mind set on nothing but food, I entered looking forward to the meal ahead. Luckily Age and Sons have the most pleasant and amiable staff it has ever been my pleasure to meet.
My dining companion’s Sea Bass and Charlotte Sauce was heavenly – firm, fresh and flavoursome – complimented by beans, beetroot and poppy petals that worked well with the delicate flavours of the fish.
The entry offers a view through to the kitchen, where we were greeted by the chef and led to our table. The restaurant was busy and the light airy room buzzed with jovial small talk.
Then on to pudding, always my favourite. But after such a fine meal could it possibly compete? Of course. The smell of the hot Strawberry Bakewell washed around the room and stirred the palate once again and the Chocolate Nemesis lived up to its name, rendering me incapacitated until the coffee came.
The menu was diverse with a range of wellchosen foods from Strawberry and Wild Fennel Risotto to classic Ribeye Steak. Our order was taken by Chloe, whose knowledge of the menu and ingredients was outstanding. We were talked through the menu and enjoyed some light conversation and before we knew it, the starters arrived, piping hot. The Fish Soup with Rouille and Gruyere was light and aromatic, while the Squid with Chilli and Ginger Sauce was cooked to perfection – tender with a complimentary spicy kick from the sauce. While the plates were cleared, Chloe talked us through the artwork on the wall by a local artist and very quickly the main appeared. After making this recipe for years without ever writing down how it’s done, insideKENT’s Editor is finally ready to give up her secret to the perfect summer pasta salad.
Serves 10-15 500g Gigli or pasta of your choice 400ml mayonnaise 150ml soured cream 20 rashers streaky bacon 25g fresh dill 4 large tomatoes 2 tsp garlic salt 2 tsp onion granules 2 Tbsp grated parmesan freshly ground pepper to taste 1. Chop bacon rashers into 1cm pieces. Cook the bacon in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat, turning/stirring occasionally until evenly browned and crispy (about 10 minutes). Drain the bacon on kitchen roll and refrigerate to cool. 2. Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Stir in the pasta and return to a boil. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally until the pasta has cooked through but is firm to the bite (about 10-12 minutes). Drain pasta and rinse with cold water to cool. 3. Finely chop the dill (making sure to remove all large stems) and chop the tomatoes (making sure to dispose of tomato seeds). 4. In a large bowl, mix the mayonnaise, soured cream, garlic salt, onion granules, parmesan, dill, tomatoes and bacon. Add pasta and toss to coat evenly, and add ground pepper to taste. Cover bowl and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.

ARTS
such beautiful things DESIGNER-MADE JEWELLERY, SCULPTURE AND GLASS ARTWORKS GIVE THE iS2 GALLERY IN THE HEART OF THE SEASIDE TOWN OF WHITSTABLE A STRONG HAND FOR THOSE IN SEARCH OF BEAUTIFUL AND ORIGINAL FORM.
iS2 Gallery only opened in March this year but is already gaining a reputation as a worthy destination for those in search of originality and quality. Situated next to the iconic pub The Duke of Cumberland and Wheelers Oyster Bar, it’s in the centre of Whitstable and unmissable with its purple exterior and corner location. On looking through the windows, the eye is instantly drawn to the sensuous sculptures of local artist Bob Allen. These forms were created on the beach just a stone’s throw away from the gallery. On venturing inside you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with an array of sleek black cabinets containing the work of ten top jewellery designers, most of whom are award winners. The designers and artists have been chosen to compliment and harmonise with each other whilst still offering something for all tastes. Many of these artists are Kentbased. Among them you can find the playful yet bold jewellery of Catherine Hills, whose numerous commissions include jewellery for Rob Morris various Harry Potter films. You will also find pieces from Rochesterbased Olivia Schlevogt whose stylish combination of silver, white gold and 22ct yellow gold designs have gained international recognition. But it’s not all precious metals jewellery; there are the striking designs of the hand-painted acrylic jewellery of Gail Klevan, and the colourful anodised aluminium pieces made by John Moore. Whitstable resident Rob Morris is the designer and owner of the gallery and can be seen creating his own individual pieces in his workshop on the premises. He is equally happy to discuss the methods he uses in manufacture,
or to work with the client designing bespoke jewellery for themselves or as a unique gift. Rob’s latest collection is his Dusk range, which was created for the launch of the iS2 gallery. Rob says, “I wanted to make something with a very strong identity and local connection; the Dusk collection is inspired by local forms and images, based largely around natural erosion. Rob’s jewellery designs for women are often bold, but still very sensuous and with a timeless appeal. This particularly applies to his collection of hand-forged bangles, which are patiently filed and highly polished to give a perfectly smooth finish. His men’s jewellery is well thought out with many original concepts and is aimed at a modern wearer who appreciates smart design over cliché. “I regard many of my pieces as being unisex, simply because in my opinion, the attitude and stature of the wearer is just as important as gender.” Before opening iS2, Rob supplied many renowned galleries throughout the UK, but always dreamt of having his own outlet. He is now enjoying the interaction with his clients. This has given a fresh perspective and has already led to a considerable amount of commission work. Whitstable was chosen as the location for the iS2 Gallery because of its vibrant, friendly atmosphere and unique identity. “With our vision it felt natural to be in Whitstable and we hope that our presence helps to further reinforce this individuality” says Rob. The full range of Rob’s jewellery is exclusively available at the iS2 Gallery, open 10.15am-5pm on weekends and most weekdays. iS2 Gallery 1 Horsebridge Road Whitstable CT5 1AF 01227 272358 www.robmorrisjewellerydesign.com

Leaving the car park behind, follow the path through the gate towards the way-marked route to the river, swirling over the weirs. The river is a Kentish tributary of the River Thames. Its name is believed to be from a Celtic word meaning 'river where oak trees grow'. Ponies graze on the open fields and sheep can be seen on the hillsides before you rejoin the river and pass under the M20 and then the A20 to head towards Farningham. Here the Lion Hotel, a popular haunt with generations of keen anglers including the writer Charles Dickens, overlooks the river. The village flourished in the 18th century when it was an important overnight stop on the coach road from London to the coast and its fine inns are still popular with both visitors and local residents. Just across the road from the Lion Hotel stands one of the finest mills in the valley. The corn grinding stopped at this picturebook white weather boarded mill in 1900. Past residents at the Mill House have included the infamous Captain Bligh who was in command of the HMS Bounty when the notorious mutiny occurred in 1789. Fifteen years after the Bounty mutiny, he
was appointed Governor of New South Wales in Australia, with orders to clean up the corrupt rum trade of the New South Wales Corps, resulting in the so-called Rum Rebellion. Cross over the town bridge and past the site of a former castle and medieval fairs – now Market Meadows, a village open space. Continue up the main street with its well-preserved stately Georgian houses and turn left just after Farningham House, opposite the Pied Bull public house, to follow the path back across the fields and along to the banks of the river. Keep an eye out for the resident wildlife that thrives in the area. The yellow breasts of grey wagtails are regularly seen along this stretch of the river and numerous holes in the bank are clearly the homes for small creatures such as water voles. Crossing the river to the eastern side you will return back to Horton Kirby village. The White House on the main street is a place of significance in the area. It was believed to have been the centre of a thriving smuggling business handling spirits and silks at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.
Local Attractions North Kent really does harbour some great hidden treasures. Why not stay a while and make the most of your time in the area? Nearby, Lullingstone is a fascinating area and has many attractions including a wonderful country park and one of the best surviving examples of a roman villa in Britain. However if you prefer to take it easy there are some lovely pubs just a stone’s throw away in the villages of Farningham and Eynsford as well as in Horton Kirby itself.
Within five miles: • Lullingstone Castle and World Garden – Lullingstone Castle is one of the oldest family Estates in the country and dates back to the Domesday. It has been in the Hart Dyke family for 20 generations. • Eagle Heights Wildlife Park – One of the UK’s biggest birds of prey centres that is also now expanding its wildlife parks to include different species of animals including cheetahs, meerkats, snakes, lizards and lots more.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGING BUT BEAUTIFUL GOLF COURSE THAT YOU CAN HOP OVER THE CHANNEL TO IN THE MORNING AND STILL BE BACK HOME IN TIME FOR TEA, THEN THE DUNKIRK GOLF COURSE COULD BE THE PERFECT SOLUTION. Originally designed in the early 1990s by French architect and registered golf instructor, Robert Berthet, the course has recently had a further nine holes added to it by the architect. The result is an eye-catching and often windswept 27-hole course renowned for its beautifully designed greens, bunkers and water features. When commissioned to add the latest nine holes in 2006, Berthet turned to Dunkirk’s 17th century military fortifications for inspiration. The result is a unique combination of artillery towers and bastions for golfers to drive off, and a range of moats and lakes to be navigated, offering visitors to the course an unforgettable experience. For those who have worked up an appetite after a strenuous time on the green, and fancy sampling the local cuisine before sailing back home, there are plenty of restaurants in Dunkirk to choose from. With its Flemish heritage, the town boasts an impressive array of gastronomic delights, from moules frites and the catch of the day, to waffles and chantilly cream. Situated just 15k from the Dunkirk ferry terminal and 5k from the town centre, the easiest route to the Dunkirk Golf Course is via the DFDS Seaways (formerly Norfolkline) ferry service, which runs from Dover to Dunkirk every two hours. With its fleet of three brand new ships, DFDS Seaways offers a comfortable and relaxing journey

to this unique location, at great value for money. From now until 20th July, passengers can travel across the Channel for just £19 return for a day trip for a car and up to four passengers (terms and conditions apply*). For those who are looking to spend longer on the Continent, fares for journeys between Dover and Dunkirk start from just £25 each way for a car and up to four passengers.
Luckily, most of the action on the beach these days is either from children playing in the sand or from a range of watersports enthusiasts, as the dunes are a favourite of kite, sand and windsurfers.
Upon arrival, Dunkirk port also boasts a passenger-friendly exit, with none of the congestion associated with busier ports, such as Calais. With its fantastic road connections via major routes such as the A16, it also acts as the perfect gateway to the rest of Northern Europe, with easy access to Belgium, Holland and Germany, as well as other parts of France. Renowned for its superb beaches and dunes, delicious food, great shopping and wide range of visitor attractions, Dunkirk is one of France’s best seaside destinations. From watersports and war memorials to the town’s two shopping malls, there is something for everyone. When visiting Dunkirk today, however, it can be hard to imagine that this town’s 15k stretch of sandy beach was once the backdrop to the greatest evacuation operation in military history. Over seventy years ago, in 1940, 340,000 British and French soldiers were rescued here by a makeshift fleet of around 700 vessels from advancing German troops.
To book your ferry trip to Dunkirk, or for more information about the DFDS Seaways ferry services, including a full schedule of its 12 daily sailings, as well as all the latest offers, visit www.dfdsseaways.co.uk or call 0871 574 7241 from the UK or 0044 208 127 8303 from the continent. Modern pilgrims who journey to the Cathedral still climb the Pilgrim Steps, now worn by the many thousands of medieval pilgrims visiting the shrine, often lighting candles at the William of Perth prayer-station in front of the oratory. After a short drive I was excited to arrive at an impressive Georgian mansion set within lush countryside illuminated by the glorious evening sunshine; already a great start to the weekend. Swiftly checked in and escorted to my room, I was soon pulling on a fluffy oversized bathrobe and heading down the corridor to the health club and spa. Although tempted to take advantage of the modern gym facilities, I decided to leave that for the morning and to concentrate on relaxing by making the most of the pool area with a gentle swim followed by a snooze on the reclining lounger. Within two hours of leaving the office I was enjoying a massage in the hydrotherapy Jacuzzi before heading into the sauna and steam rooms. All too soon it was time to leave and head back to my room to get ready for dinner. Traditionally decorated but with all the modern amenities to make a home from home including broadband connection, flat screen TV, hairdryer and iron; the room was very spacious, warm and welcoming. The real wow factor for me though was the full-length windows on two sides of the room providing views over the beautiful countryside and which by now were allowing late evening sunshine to pour in, giving the room a soft glow. An invigorating power shower re-energised me and I was ready for dinner in The Dining Room, the hotel’s two AA rosette-winning restaurant. Here we were treated to four courses of modern British cuisine including perfectly cooked scallops
and tender fillet of beef as well as my personal favourites, black bream followed by dark chocolate fondant with an oozing gooey chocolate centre, all washed down with a bottle of red chosen from the extensive wine list. At the end of a great evening the working week seemed miles behind.
availability on display at reception it was tempting to try one of the unique treatments on offer such as the LUX Shea Candle Massage or the Bamboo Sticks Massage. Or maybe a game of tennis followed by another trip to the spa, or perhaps a venture out of the hotel to the Brands Hatch Racing Circuit or to the London Golf Club. But finally I settled on making the most of the weather and surroundings by following the walking routes in the countryside. There are four recommended routes available starting at half a mile up to a mile and a half. Brandshatch Place Hotel and Spa is a great getaway to enjoy a little exercise, a lot of relaxation, delectable food and the beauty of the Garden of England. If you’re pressed for time then its location makes this a great hotel for a short mid-week spa break or weekend getaway, or become a member and unwind in the spa as often as you like. First-class service and attention to detail also make this an ideal venue for a special occasion.
The following morning after a quick workout I was back in The Dining Room for breakfast. The continental buffet had an impressively large selection of cereals, yoghurts, fruits, nuts, juices, cooked meats & cheeses and pastries to try. If you have room, the delicious cooked breakfasts are made fresh to order using local produce.

WHEN YOU GET TO A CERTAIN AGE IN LIFE, AND PERHAPS ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, HOLIDAYS ARE NOT SO MUCH LOOKED UPON AS POTENTIAL FOR ADRENALINEFUELLED ADVENTURES, BUT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COLLAPSE IN A HEAP. IRONICALLY OF COURSE, IF AND WHEN YOU DO HAVE KIDS, THEY IN TURN EXPECT A FAMILY HOLIDAY FULL OF EXCITEMENT AND ADVENTURE. AND ICE CREAM. SO, HOW TO SORT OUT THIS MISMATCH OF EXPECTATIONS? WELL, YOU COULD DO A LOT WORSE THAN HIRE A BEACH COTTAGE FROM MULBERRY COTTAGES.

www.insidekentmagazine.co.uk
It’s not often we arrive at a holiday destination with everybody feeling the same sense of excitement, but on this occasion we did. We got out of the car and found ourselves in a beautiful wild garden, which managed to look well tended, whilst at the same time seeming as if it had been allowed to grow character. And Southerndown - the beautiful white cottage we were staying in, and which we discovered nestled away in the middle of all this greenery - raised a loud, spontaneous “oh wow!” from just about all of us. As we climbed the front steps and unlocked the door, we were treated to a blast of warm summery air from the conservatory. Beyond this, the house, not shying away from its seaside personality, was furnished throughout with white painted floors, wall and ceilings, dark wooden blinds and plush, comfortable furniture. The cottage was decorated generously with nautically-themed ornaments (the ‘captain's table’ in the front room being a real highlight) and seaside-related artwork, all of which was acquired locally in Rye. All of this lovely seasideyness was complimented brilliantly with bang-up-to-date retro touches from the likes of White Trading Company and Cath Kidston. And I got the impression that the décor was this way because that's how the owners liked it. The result was a real homely feel as soon as we walked in the front door. We felt welcome, and we felt like we belonged there. It was like making a new friend with somebody you felt you'd known for years.
provided for our children. A sailor's chest full of board games, a cupboard with some classic kids' DVDs, buckets and spades and a bug collecting kit, told us without a doubt that all of our family were extremely welcome at Southerndown, something we appreciated immensely. It is often said in promotional blurb that a particular residence is ‘just 5 minutes from the beach’; however, on this occasion it was absolutely true. We could see the sea wall from our garden, and a quick stroll later we were on the beach picking up shells. Like all good holidays, there proved to be many memorable moments such as my son remembering to use a fork without being nagged at dinnertime, all of us cuddling up on the sofa bed and watching Britain's Got Talent, and my daughter's wobbly front tooth finally falling out! After a fantastic night's sleep we were woken by the surprisingly gentle lilt of seagulls (why do they always sound so much better by the sea?) and breakfast was enjoyed in the sunny warm conservatory. Thanks to the thoughtfulness and generosity of the owners, it included real coffee in a French press – something that I really appreciated.
The bathrooms were equally well laid-out and surprisingly spacious, and the bath was a lovely place to have a luxurious soak after the kids were in bed.
After allowing the kids to play in the brilliant playpark just outside the cottage, we headed off to Winchelsea, a beautiful little village at the top of a hill a couple of miles from the beach. Apart from the lovely shops and pubs, Winchelsea is famous because its church, St Thomas, is the site of comedy legend Spike Milligan's grave, a place frequented by fans all the year round.
But perhaps the one thing about the cottage that most spoke to my wife and I, and the one thing that was most responsible for the relaxed state we almost instantly found ourselves in, was the way that Southerndown's owners had
Visiting Spike's final resting place proved a profound moment for me. As I knelt reverently (perhaps a tad pretentiously) and read the words on his headstone, I was reminded once again of a recurring theme from our time away: the
important things in life. Things like love, joy, friendship and family. And then this last one was reinforced practically when my son came crashing into me, sending me sprawling on top of Spike's grave, something I am pretty sure he would have found hilarious. Based on the brilliant anecdote the Spike incident has given me, perhaps the (almost) final word should go to my kids. I asked them what they enjoyed most about the weekend. My 5-yearold son – ever with his finger on the pulse of fashion and home décor – liked the White Company bunting and the shell collecting we did on the beach. On the other hand, my 7-year-old daughter enjoyed the outdoor coloured lights and the park. But I think I can speak for all of us when I say that the thing we collectively enjoyed most was spending time together as a family, in the most relaxing and enjoyable surroundings imaginable. Staying at Southerndown Cottage was a welcome return to what’s important in life; a simpler time where PlayStations and iPods were not necessary to relax or have a good time, where a family could simply enjoy each other’s company. A holiday from a busy, impersonal world with those who matter most.

Porto in Northern Portugal is a unique city. It gave the world port wine, but more importantly it is the ideal city break destination. The newly opened Yeatman Hotel is the first wine hotel in the region offering a truly one-of-akind experience.

www.insidekentmagazine.co.uk
Portugal is more inviting than ever as a tourist destination...
If you are swayed by hotel ratings, then The Yeatman lives up to its 5 stars, and if there were higher ratings available I would rate The Yeatman even higher. It sits on the river Douro and every bedroom has a larger-than-life balcony with breathtaking views of the UNESCO Ribeira area of Porto along with endless views of the river. Until now, Porto had lacked a hotel devoted to the city’s main attribute: wine. The Yeatman offers award-winning wines across the hotel with bedrooms themed after Portuguese wine houses and labels. There is also an award-winning chef providing exquisite pairing menus. Portugal is more inviting than ever as a tourist destination and thanks to being so easily accessed and the friendliness of its people, along with innovative hotel launches such as The Yeatman Hotel, the country can only grow from strength to strength over the coming years for visitors from across the world. If you are in Porto for a few days, ensure you visit a ‘port lodge’ such as Taylor’s – a leading brand now in its fourth century offering guided tours where you can see, experience and taste ports from different times using various grapes. These lodges sit on the south side of the Douro River alongside numerous cafés and restaurants, and you can take a ride in a cable car offering unique views of the city and the magnificent bridges that cross the river. You can also walk across the stunning double-deck Dom Luis Bridge to the north side of Porto over the Douro River. From here you are stepping back in time to a picturesque city dominated by history. Walking is the best way to experience the city and you’ll get as much from relaxing at a café, having a leisurely lunch or enjoying a coffee and custard tart in a square as you will from packing in as many of the sights as possible. For incomparable city views, walk up from the Ribeira quayside head towards the city’s highest building, the Clérigos. Along the way you’ll pass more churches than you’d expect to see in a smallish city; make sure to stop at the Igreja de São Francisco for a look at the outstanding interior.
Porto also has some modern highlights including the Serralves Foundation Museum of Contemporary Art where you can enjoy lunch on the stunning roof terrace. The House of Music (Casa da Musica), which hosts international events, is a super contemporary building and deserves a visit. Heading back towards The Yeatman and on either side of the Douro River you must explore the river via a cruise for another picturesque view of both sides of the city. But your exploring continues once back at The Yeatman. The outdoor panoramic pool allows you to indulge in those unique views once more. After a swim in the pool head to the stunning Vinothérapie Spa by Caudalie – a spa set over various floors with 10 large treatment rooms and plenty of heat and water experiences including an indoor panoramic infinity pool. As each of the 82 rooms has been allocated a wine partner you’ll get a taste for that particular wine house, but why stop there? The Yeatman offers a wine cellar with an unparalleled choice of wood-aged and vintage ports along with the most extensive collection of Portuguese wines in the world. The stunning restaurant offers all manner of menus showcasing the finest in Portuguese cuisine easily partnered with a vast selection of wines. Dick’s Bar offers a 24-hour service and remains open around the clock so you and your guests can enjoy a glass or two of port whenever you fancy. And after all that, the bedrooms at The Yeatman are the ideal locations to simply sit back and relax. Free Wi-Fi connections and bathrooms offering panoramic views mean you’ll have all your comforts taken care of. The service at the hotel is better than anywhere else in and around Porto, and the staff are knowledgeable and proud of The Yeatman, giving visitors a real sense that they enjoy the experience as much as guests do. The CEO of The Yeatman, Adrian Bridge, summarises the experience, “This city has been waiting for this hotel.” Whilst it may sound a little arrogant, he is right. Port is known around the world and The Yeatman is the only hotel to fuse the tastes of the wine industry, the soul of a city and the passion of its people to further extend Porto’s reach to new markets.

A MODERN MASTERPIECE The Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI Sport
WORDS AND PHOTOS BY LUKE YATES
The Mercedes-Benz C220 Sport is state-of-the-art, top-quality German engineering backed up by Italian design - a perfect combination resulting in a modern masterpiece, albeit one you won't be content to just sit and look at.

My first dalliance with a Mercedes-Benz C-Class occurred about 10 years ago, and so unfortunately in order to recount this anecdote I will have to reveal a deep dark secret: I was not always a suave dashing photographer-slash-feature writer. In another life, I used to be an IT geek. And a decade or so ago, I had been asked to drive all the way from Ashford in Kent, to Bawtry Hall in South Yorkshire and then give a riveting and inspirational twenty-minute talk to some of my company's newest recruits on using the interweb. And in order to travel this considerable distance in as economically viable a fashion as possible, I would be using a hire car. So a request was duly put in to the purchasing department, who informed me that I would be restricted to a ‘Class C’ car (Class A being very posh, Class C being a 1-litre Ford Fiesta). However, something truly wondrous and unheard of happened – a miracle if you will. In what was a first ever, the lady in charge of hiring transportation made a horrific gaffe – instead of asking for a ‘Class C’ car, she asked for a ‘C-Class’ (who says Jedi mind tricks don't work?). So on the morning of the journey, to my delight, and to her absolute horror, a shiny MercedesBenz C-Class arrived to whisk me away, semifairytale-like, to my conference. Having clearly expressed my disappointment at this turn of events, and insisted that it was too late to return it and that I would “take it if I had to”, there followed a few private moments of gleeful gloating, followed by a few more of fumbling with strangely placed handbrakes, plus a quick phone call to
my dad-in-law to find out how to drive an automatic car (I had never done so before!) and then we were off. And in grand style!
the world. The Mercedes-Benz emblem is a symbol of class, style and good taste. And there's more than one very good reason for that.
The journey was one of the most memorable road trips I've taken, and for all the right reasons. It was effortless from start to finish, truly magnificent and luxuriously comfortable. I grew rather attached to the Mercedes-Benz extremely quickly, being quite saddened when the trip was over and I had to return it, especially as reality was setting in. Trish from purchasing and my manager were now breathing down my neck over my outrageous flouting of company policy and hiring ridiculous expensive cars. Until they got the fuel bills.
A fellow content to dress smart-casual I may be, but from the moment I clapped eyes on the Sport's eye-catching Italian-designed exterior, it made me feel particularly scruffy, as if I should have turned up in a crisp designer suit. Every line was flawless, and its black paint and alloy wheels seemed to glisten. Rather than spend the first few moments finding interesting angles to photograph, I was content to merely gaze in awe at this masterpiece. Sunlight pierced the grey overcast sky to light up the stunning car, and somewhere above it, a heavenly choir sang in praise.
It then transpired that a rather lead-footed colleague of mine, who had been lumbered with a ‘Class C’ vehicle (and I use the term loosely) had beaned it up to Bawtry and back for the same conference, arriving with a sore head, damaged vertibrae and a huge petrol bill. When I handed my claim in, I'd spent about half as much on petrol, despite driving a ‘big’ car at the same speed. In the end I'd managed to spend no more in total on my trip than the guy in HR had driving a Ford Fiesta (excluding the trip to the chiropractor he probably had to claim for afterwards). Plus I'd given the CEO's wife a lift back, earning me extra brownie points. What this attests to and speaks of, is everything I found to be true with the magnificent C220 Sport I had the privilege of test-driving recently. Years ago when I were a lad, badges were stolen from such vehicles and worn by rappers all over
Whilst maintain the classic emblem at the front of the car, the C-Class has been brought up to date with an edgier three-bar grill, giving it a younger, more dangerous look than its predecessors. The model I drove also had an AMG bodykit, making it perhaps equally appealing in looks as well as performance to new potential Mercedes buyers, as well as existing ones. This is in every way a car of luxury and extreme good taste, and it felt very at home effortlessly cruising the beautiful country roads on the outskirts of Tonbridge. With a 170 bhp engine, capable of 0-60 in just over 8 seconds, this is a car that makes motorway driving an absolute pleasure and a joy, just like that Mercedes-Benz I drove all those years ago up to Yorkshire. But even more so.

THE MERCEDES-BENZ C220 CDI SPORT
Price: £27,870 (OTR) / Transmission: 6-speed manual 0-62MPH: 8.4 seconds / Top Speed: 144MPH Combined Economy: 64.2MPG / CO2 Emissions: 117G/KM
However, under its classy exterior beats the heart of a sleeping wild beast. In normal mode the car is punchy, handles superbly and glides effortlessly over the road. But once you hit the sport button on the central console and the car readjusts the tuning, handling and suspension, that inner-beast wakes up, roars into life and shows you that it has yet to be tamed.
stunning. The central console is hi-tech without being overt and tacky, and everything is set out to be intuitive and easy to operate, with excellent driving position.
Even the tiniest twitch of your foot on the accelerator in sport mode causes the car to respond instantly, and if you slam your foot down too irreverently, it will try to kill you where you sit. This car does not like disrespect, and it is quite capable of telling you so. Although, it has to be said that being on the receiving end of admonishment from the Sport is what being yelled at by Brian Blessed would be like: utterly terrifying at the time but a thrilling and unique experience, and something you are not going to stop telling your friends about later down the pub. Mercedes-Benz are keen to stress that this is a very eco-friendly C-Class. Despite the aforementioned outrageous performance, the car is equipped with all sorts of clever energysaving features, like the automatic start/stop function, resulting in it being capable of returning 64.2mpg combined and emissions of 117g/km. The in-car detailing is beautiful and reflects the overall build quality – there are inset panels of real wood in the doors and dash which look

look at. And if you are a CEO I suggest you sack the IT guy and buy the C220 as your new company car. Just think of the money you'd save!
The model I drove sported a magnificent popup console which materialises as soon as the key is turned. This optional extra system really does do everything – it houses one of the finest SatNavs I've ever used, handles bluetooth phones brilliantly, has a delightfully retro-looking digital radio with an old-fashioned tuning needle on the display which moves as you turn the dials, and can even play DVD films. And all of this could be operated by voice – a feature activated via a small button on the steering wheel. This worked flawlessly, even with my strange Kentish accent, and I absolutely loved playing with it, if only to have somebody to enthuse vocally to about this fantastic car. It is fair to say that I had very high expectations in driving the C220, having had previous experience of a C-Class. It did not disappoint any of these, in fact it exceeded them in every way. This is not a car for everyone; this is a car that you have to earn the right to drive, a bit of luxury for those who want it, but not at the expense of the planet. The Mercedes-Benz C220 Sport is state-of-the-art, top-quality German engineering backed up by Italian design – a perfect combination resulting in a modern masterpiece, albeit one you won't be content to just sit and

CHARITY
CHARITY CHALLENGE raises close to £30,000 for the Kent MS Therapy Centre In a time where sponsored runs, cycles or swims are frequently organised to raise money for a worthwhile cause, it was one man’s crazy idea which brings a whole new meaning to the word ‘challenge’. A challenge that stands out from existing sponsored events and determined who really had the ‘Fit Factor’! At the beginning of 2010, Mark Taylor proposed an idea, which would push even the most experienced runners and cyclists beyond their personal best. In April 2011, that idea became a reality. Mark had convinced 9 others to join him in the quest for the Fit Factor. On Friday 8th April the team left Hamstreet, cycled to Paris, completed the Paris Marathon with 9 additional team members, and then cycled back to Hamstreet, arriving on Tuesday 12th April. The 5-day trip covered 450 miles and a 26-mile marathon. Their enthusiasm and dedication to complete this challenge resulted in raising both the awareness of Multiple Sclerosis and also £29,561 for the Kent MS Therapy Centre to support sufferers of MS. In the last few years several local people have been diagnosed with MS, a disease which has no cure and whose symptoms vary in each sufferer. This challenge has highlighted the desire of 19 people to complete their own individual goals, and inspire a lot of people to support a much needed facility for Kent. With nearly 30 producers attending this year’s event selling products including jams, chutneys, pies, cheeses, crisps, chocolates, plants, meat and game and more, the event was a huge success. Over 1000 visitors came to the vineyard on the day, despite the unlucky weather, enjoying ploughman’s lunches produced at the vineyard and taking the chance to meet and buy from some of the county’s best producers. The event, which is held in aid of the Kent Air Ambulance has raised over £2,000 in aid of this excellent

ENTERTAINMENT
A Showbiz Breakfast insideKENT spent the morning with Charlie & James from Heart Breakfast, chatting about their daily routines, favourite spots in Kent and lifelong ambitions.
What time do you have to wake up for work in the morning? C: I get up at 3.30am. Actually, that’s a bit of a lie. My first alarm goes off at 3.30, but I’ve got about 7 alarms, and I generally get out of bed at about 5 to 4am. J: I’m slightly luckier because I live closer to the studio, so my first alarm goes off at 4.40am, second alarm at 4.57 and I manage to get up shortly after 5. What do you normally have for breakfast? C: We go through phases at the studio, don’t we? J: Yeah, it’s Cocoa Pops at the moment, though we have been quite good sometimes and have loads of bread, peanut butter, things like that. Sometimes we’re really filthy – usually on a Monday – and we go to McDonald’s. C: There’s a café around the corner that delivers as well. Anything you want! I’ll get a cheese and tomato bap. J: And I’ll go for a double burger with cheese, onions and mushrooms. How do you like to unwind after a week on air? J: A lovely night with the wife. C: She’ll be so pleased you said that. J: No really, Friday nights are the best nights – there’s something great about Fridays because you kind of know you’ve got the weekend ahead. Our weekends are getting a lot busier with Heart, especially over the summer, but 9 times out of 10 I know I don’t have to get up in the morning. C: I like a nice glass of wine on a Friday night because I don’t drink at all during the week. I can’t even have one glass of wine and then get up for the show!
90
www.insidekentmagazine.co.uk
What are some of your favourite places to visit in Kent? J: My favourite place to visit in Kent in the afternoon is my bed. There’s nothing quite like a siesta in the afternoon while everyone else is at work. Outside of my bed, I love the Weald part of Kent – the little villages and towns. I also love Broadstairs – the beach, the high street, I love it. C: I drive past Bluewater every day. I certainly pop in there a lot, or anywhere with nice shops. Apparently Bluewater is a mile long, so if I walk around it three times, I’ve done 3 miles exercise! I used to live in Thanet and have a house there, and I love the beaches – Botany Bay, Viking Bay, Joss Bay – they’re just lovely in the summer. Out of all the celebs you’ve interviewed, who was your favourite? C: I met Bob Geldof a few years ago in Maidstone, and it was one of those things where there were loads and loads of journalists there trying to interview him, all squabbling about who would go first. So I just walked up to him and said, ‘Alright Bob, can I have a chat?’ and we ended up talking for about 20 minutes. J: I got on really well with Nick Hewer from The Apprentice. Also Jeremy Kyle is a lovely guy. I obviously interviewed Charlie O’Brien for the job, that was a good one. Do you get any strange requests or shoutouts from listeners? J: Nothing too strange, though I always find it amusing when people call and ask, ‘Could you give a mention to little Sarah for her birthday?’ and I ask, ‘Oh, how old is Sarah?’ and they say, ‘6 months’. It’s nice for the family or for an interactive scrapbook, but Sarah ain’t gonna know. C: Lots of women want pictures of James – he has quite a fan base. And if I ever dare to say anything about James needing to go for a run or cutting out bacon sandwiches, I get it in the neck.
J: Yes, I do have to fight them off a lot, as you can imagine [smiles]. James, how did you take to Charlie when she first started? J: Honestly, very well because it was a decision we’d made long before. It wasn’t like it was something that was thrust upon me. We’d already been working together – Charlie went from being a news journalist to the slightly more tatty side of radio to be a presenter, but I knew it was going to be good. Charlie, how did you take to James when you first started? C: I knew James for about 4 years before, so I knew what to expect. We clicked quicker than I thought we would actually, it all felt like it happened really naturally. James really looked after me when I first started; don’t know what’s happened since! Did you have any nicknames as a child or at school? C: I didn’t have a nickname as a child, but have been called various things over the years. I was called ‘Barbie’ at school because I was even blonder and more fake tan back then. J: Really? Can you get much more? C: Oh yeah, I was much more. I also get called ‘Lashes’. J: At my school we were all called by our surnames, so I always heard, ‘HEMING!’, and then Heming was shortened to just ‘Ming’. If you were a biscuit, what would you be? C: I’d be a Bourbon. You can dunk them, but they don’t fall in your cup of tea, you get a good solid bit of biscuit and you get the good contrast of the chocolate cream. What more could you want? J: I’d be a McVities Plain Chocolate Digestive. It has to be a McVities, there’s just something about the texture and the taste. Maybe it’s because I’ve grown up with them, but yes, definitely a McVities.
What do you have playing on your iPod right now? C: I’m so predictable – I have Take That’s new one. I’m going to see them in concert and I figure I need to know some of their new stuff before I go. Apart from that I have really old stuff like 80s Madonna. J: At the moment I’m listening to an album by The Pierces called ‘You & I’, but I quite enjoy my dance music (though I LOVE the music played on Heart). I’m a huge fan of Elbow as well. If you weren’t already doing your dream job of radio presenting, what would you like to do? C: I’ve always wanted to do something like radio presenting. I was a journalist before and I love showbiz. But, I did briefly look into being a midwife. I love babies (I know, that sounds really cheesy), but I like the idea of bringing new life into the world. I don’t actually think I could do it – you have to be really, really strong to do something like that, so I’ll just stick to radio. J: I’d be on a boat somewhere, sailing, trying to earn a living out of boating. I quite enjoy my photography work as well, so maybe I’d try to take some more photographs to earn a living doing that. But at the moment, radio presenting was a lifelong ambition, so I’m living the dream.
