MAKRINITSA:

The name is first attested in the early 13th century through the Makrinitissa Monastery. “Makrinitissa” itself is a more scholarly form of “Makrinitsa”, which must have been the colloquial name even at the time. It is of Slavic origin, originally Mokrinitsa, a diminutive form of Mokrina, “wet place”, referring to the water-rich environs of the village. The name was Hellenized with the change of the first vowel to “a” from the Greek word makrys, “long”. It is situated in the northwestern part of the Pelion mountains, 6 km northeast of Volos. One of the most characteristic traditional settlements, full of mansions and houses that look like hanging ornaments on the green mountain side. One of the traditional coffee houses is decorated with a fresco by the famous Greek painter Theofilos. The picturesque cobbled paths of Makrinitsa are scattered with traditional water fountains. Makrinitsa is a popular tourist destination, especially during the winter. The village is the home of the Museum of Folk Art and History of Pelion, housed in the historic Topali Mansion, with over 1,500 objects related to the folk culture and everyday life of the region. HISTORY OF BUILDING: The museum is housed in the Topali palace located just below the main square, next to the Metamorfosi church, an example of the three-storey fortified stone buildings of the period. The palace is heavily fortified, with many battlements and a defensive turret on the roof. It has some small barred windows on the ground floor, with slightly larger and larger windows on the upper floors. The layout is that of the upper part of the Greek case letter: Γ. The wooden roof is covered with local slate. The ground floor housed warehouses, while the family lived on the first floor in winter and on the second floor in summer. The doors are small, made of wood and reinforced with iron bars. Well-preserved decorative elements include faux windows above the first floor windows, wooden ceilings and the turret with slits. It is a museum with rich folkloric finds from all over the Pelion, the three-storey house was built in 1844 as communicated to us by the engraved sign of the entrance and in 1932, the last ancestors of the Topali family donated it to the community to host a historical and folkloric collection of the village and the wider region of Pelion. The large collection boasts over 1500 artifacts coming mainly from everyday life in Pelion. Old appliances, weaving equipment, traditional clothes, books, tools and jewelry are among the exhibitions that you will discover. There are also folklore wall paintings, photographic material from the early 20th century, historical relics such as the 1878 revolution banner, pieces of religious art, old weapons and banners, Ottoman firmani and an exquisite collection of works by the folklore painter Pelio, N. Christopoulos.

THE COLLECTION: The museum tries to convey the atmosphere of an old mansion, while also presenting representative objects of the region. There are over 1,500 objects in the collection including frescoes, folk paintings and other folk art of the Pelion area from the 18th and 19th centuries, religious pictures and engravings, traditional costumes, historical relics such as a banner from the 1878 revolution, many photographs from the early 20th century, houseware in bronze, wood and ceramics, equipment for distilling Rakı, and for spinning and weaving. The collection also includes books, jewelry and old weapons. There is a collection of seascapes by the local folk artist N. Christopoulos. Temporary exhibitions are organized throughout the year, recently in cooperation with the educational programs of the Makrinitas Environmental Education Center. In August 1997 the museum gave an exhibition of paintings by Dimitris Hordaki as part of the “Makrinitsa ‘97” event. As of 2016 the museum was open from 9:00 to 14:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and from 11:00 to 14:30 on Sunday.
