SIEN HANG, CHENG [CARL] University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design Master of Architecture 2020 Intergrated Product Design Certificate [Wharton] 2020

SIEN HANG, CHENG [CARL] Hi! I am Carl. I am originally from Hong Kong, but living in Chicago for the time being. I have recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design with a Master of Architecture and a Certificate in Integrated Product Design. I have been in multiple design studios including studios led by Thom Mayne, Marion Weiss, Robert StuartSmith ... just to name a few.

RESUME 2020

After 7 years of studying and internships, I am please to say that I still love Architecture! I am interested in the interlink between formal expression and functional performance of design; exploring the possibilities of how the two could compliment and create an architectural solution that is greater than the its parts. I am always questioning the program of the brief, and strives to create an innovative solution that interrogates the status quo.

PORTFOLIO 2020

L | Statue of Liberty Visitor Center Instructor: Robert Stuart-Smith Design Studio 602 | Spring 2019

INTRINSIC MATTER Through studying the complex formalstructural integration in the construction of the statue itself, the structure of the new visitor center aimes to incorporate space and structure through Topological Structure Optimized (TSO) form that molds a wholistic formal construction. The new formal language of the optimized form is further transformed into formal ornamentation that ties back to the TSO research in terms of its patterns and directionality. The combination of space, structure and ornamentation in the project reconfigures our perception towards an integrated structure, which ultimately echoes back to the original ambition of the Statue of Liberty.

[ Stress Curves ]

[ Compression Stress]

The project begins with the reconsideration of how people perceive the Statue of Liberty from a visitor’s perspective. The new visitor center aims to create a journey that brings visitors from the historic monument to a new structure that best portray the statue from moments of openings for the best unconstructed closeup view.

TECTONIC CONSIDERATION The curvature geometry is excentuated with crisp edges and overhangs that exagerate the geometry. These moments are solved tectonically with consideration on connections between elements and materiality. Custom caps would provide the sharp edges and smooth surface panels. Skylight opening is also considered tectonically to maximise view.

The ‘project’ takes the shell of the Sunshine Theater and repurpose it to become an artist’s hub that aims to solidify the growing gallery scene in the neighborhood. The project explores the past and present of La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angles relative to its context and the artifacts embedded in the site. The mission of the project is to unravel the magnificence of the unique geological site and open up the museum to showcase the

history that is buried. Our vision for the project is to create a journey that carries people from the present to the past. The new museum interacts with the landscape through a pathway that leads the visitors across the site.
