In Colombia, we have rhythm in our blood. Here we walk as if we're dancing and we talk with a sing-song tone. Music in our country is not heard, it is lived. We have an "I don't know what" that spreads and makes people move. The schedule of our festivals and carnivals is endless. In each of our regions, there is a different rhythm (that's why we are known as the country of 1000 rhythms). Our artists are recognized throughout the world. And we even have cultural heritage of humanity rhythms and songs. IF THERE IS A COUNTRY THAT VIBRATES WITH THE EMOTIONS THAT ITS MUSIC PRODUCES, IT IS COLOMBIA.

COLOMBIA IS USIC DISCOVER THE COUNTRY OF A THOUSAND RHYTHMS The country of sabrosura is characterized by a great diversity of musical expressions, that go through a rich variety of sounds and melodies coming from all our natural regions. Colombians express all their emotion through the nearly 1,025 folk rhythms grouped in 157 musical genres. The importance of music in the culture of Colombians has encouraged organizations like UNESCO to preserve traditional rhythms, declaring some as Intangible Cultural World Heritage. Some of those included in this list include vallenato, marimba music songs from the plains. We invite you to discover the language of Colombian music and, through it, connect with its regions and its people to make your visit unique, memorable and meaningful.

GENRES AND INSTRUMENTS In Colombia, the sabrosura is celebrated with the diversity of our traditional music, kept alive from generation to generation and materialized thanks to the use of our own and foreign instruments. Get to know how are they played in some regions:

CARIBBEAN REGION In the region of the Colombian Caribbean the sounds coming from the African and Spanish cultures are mixed; rhythms that with their cadence incite dance and joy. If you travel to the Colombian coast, you will discover that locals and foreigners move their hips to the sound of cumbia, porro, bullerengue, puya, chande, tambora, the negro son, the chalupa, the song of zafra, the son, the paseo, the vallenato, the meringue, among others. Vallenato, a genre that emerged from the mix of cowboys, African slaves, Indigenous rhythms and dances of the Sierra Nevada, is one of the most important musical styles of folklore in the Colombian Caribbean region. The importance of vallenato for the culture of northern Colombia motivated UNESCO to declare it as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Some of the instruments that are used to interpret these genres are: the accordion, the vallenata box, the guitar, the electric bass, the male and female gaita, the guasa, the guacharaca, the happy drum, the calling drum, the tambora and the coastal maraca.

city, town, in its gastronomy, fairs and festivals, religion and, especially, in its people. Proof of this is the national calendar full of events, fairs and popular festivals in which Colombians celebrate their identity through artistic expressions such as music, dance and theater. The Barranquilla Carnival is one of the most important cultural expressions of the region, with almost a century of history, spreading sabrosura year after year to locals and foreigners. Likewise, our capital cities have important museums with Museum in Bogota, with the largest exhibition of gold artefacts worldwide, where about 34,000 pieces of goldsmithery and 20,000 pre-Columbian objects are preserved. Additionally, Colombia is a country where you can learn about traditions and monuments referring to the Catholic religion, such as the Sanctuary of Las Lajas, in Ipiales, one of the most beautiful sanctuaries in America. And what about those places that were the scene of conquests and battles, such as Cartagena de Indias, where there are fortresses and monuments declared by UNESCO as World Heritage. The roots of Colombia have great richness thanks to the Indigenous, African and Spanish heritage, and that is where its sabrosura lies: in incredible experiences in each destination.

COMMUNITY T URISM It’s a strategy of rural development and conservation of natural and cultural heritage; it’s the type of tourism through which the local population seeks to improve their socioeconomic situation and conserve the natural resources of their territory, through the contact established between the local community and the tourist. It refers to tourism that “is based on the local community” and “that aims to reduce the negative impact and reinforce the positive impacts of tourism in nature”; it seeks

to be one of the paths that will lead to an equitable and sustainable development in which the community improves its quality of life, protects its territory and keeps its heritage alive and proud“. This is why Colombia is working with several local communities to strengthen their sustainability through experiences that make the cultural and natural heritage of the communities stronger.
