Summer of 2010 is here. What a great Summer indeed. While I have been ranching and writing a lot more than golfing so far this year, I am getting real interested in the new technologies that make our golfing lives more fun and enjoyable. Technology and Golf seems to be entering a new age from my perspective. Used to be, when we would discuss how new technologies were affecting our games for the better, we would inevitably be talking hardware, like titanium drivers, hybrid woods, and multi-material compositions. Today, however, as computer and mobile phone technology become more robust and user-friendly, it stands to reason that golfers should benefit from this synergy between our favorite outdoor sport and the gadgets we can’t seem to live without. And there is good reason to utilize these new technologies as time seems to be our most precious commodity these days. They definitely save us time in our golf improvement endeavors. Hopefully this issue will enlighten my readers on some of these new technologies, and how they can help us enjoy the game more. The reality is, most of may have the answer to better golf right in the palms of our hands.

Coastal Golf The drive from California’s Big Sur region to San Francisco on Highway 1 is arguably the most beautiful in the United States. The famous route is a sensory-blowing road trip through the winding roads of the Pacific coast with sea breezes and breathtaking views of the ocean right out the window. For golfers, this ride is more than an experience; it’s also the path connecting two of California’s premier golfing destinations: Bayonet and Black Horse on the Monterey Peninsula and Half Moon Bay Golf Links, just south of San Francisco. In a region that is arguably the crown jewel of American golf, Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses have emerged as two of the most sought after playing experiences in an area busting at the seams with golf opportunities. In December 2008, award-winning golf course architect Gene Bates completed a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation of the storied sister courses located on the site formerly occupied by Fort Ord. Long considered two of the more challenging layouts on the Peninsula, Bates skillfully elevated their design and created two of the only bentgrass facilities in the region. Bayonet, which has drawn rave reviews for the renovation, retained its tree-lined character, while showcasing Bates’ elegant bunkering

It’s all in the tee Can a revolutionary golf tee help your game? The folks at Evolve Golf think so.

The Epoch Tee is the only performance tee with radius posts that span the width of a golf ball dimple. This unique feature: • Creates the lowest coefficient of friction between the ball and tee • Eliminates deflection at impact and increases ball speed and control off the tee • Has been scientifically proven via a series of rigorous independent robotic tests combined with extensive player testing at a wide range of swing speeds to provide a three- to 12-yard increase in distance and four- to nine-yard improvement in accuracy.

The tees also make economic sense. For only $5.95 per 50-pack for the Epoch, a player stands to see far greater dollar-for-dollar distance and accuracy improvement than with a new high-tech driver, dozen golf balls, shaft or any other piece of equipment. Its tees are made from a recycled material far more resilient than wood or the renewable plant materials available today. This facilitates a reduction in the number of tees used each round, and also the number of trees cut down each year, helping our environment and also the pocketbook. Tour players have also jumped on board, garnering 125 major Tour wins, including 46 PGA Tour and 32 LPGA Tour victories since the tee’s introduction in 2004. The Technology of Golf

I remember quite vividly how much I enjoyed science class in grade school growing up. Then came my interest in sports and golf and that was all she wrote about the whole education thing. Until recently that is.

It seems that with the advent of the cable networks and the fabulous shows about science and history; that couldn’t be replicated in a classroom and with which I get to enjoy with my 8 year old daughter; and science, arts, history and the cosmos is once again becoming fascinating to me. Imagine though for us golfing history and techy, history buffs combining some cool new technologies with the game we can’t get enough of. Golf that is. Technology in golf is not really a new thing. I remember back in the mid-1980’s working in a golf shop in Arlington, Texas, and fitting clubs using a rather large swing platform called Sportech, and thinking this was the coolest thing in the world… at the time. You would stand on a platform with sensors under each foot, calculating weight shift throughout the swing, and hit balls into a net with the video monitor straight in front of Page 10

you telling you on a golf hole diagram how your shot would have flown. Of course back then this device would calculate distance, ball carry, and spin from the calculations it would take from the clubhead moving over some light sensors just below the hitting area. It was quite accurate for the day…and quite fun after work as well. I can remember many a driving and closest to the pin contests over beers after a day of selling golf and golf clubs. Good times, those. Soon after that my buddy opened a golf sports bar and had a similar swing simulator that tracked the flight of the ball and projected a golf course on a screen in front of you. Your would play in a 25’ by 30’ room, with the mixing bar right behind you, and hit into a projection screen and actually see your ball fly downrange on the big screen. Wow that was fun. This technology was more similar to the golf simulators that we use now, though we use www.sierragolfer.com

Doppler technology now to create the most accurate simulation available. Still I think these technologies are more for fun and entertainment when the weather outside is not golf-friendly. They are great in the Wintertime. Recently though, I ran across a teaching tool/technology that blew me away. I’d heard about it several years back through a buddy in Texas as I was by now living in the foothills of California. Up here our weather is great 9 months out of the year, so these indoor facilities aren’t all the rage…yet. This latest revelation is a system that allows your swing pro to videotape your swing and use real time graphics software to illustrate what’s going on with your swing, and then how to fix it. Called the Digital V1 Coaching System, this is the coolest and most robust and illustrative sports teaching system I have ever seen. Not only does Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

this system help golfers, but also helps skiers, tennis, baseball, and many other sport players. It is also used in competitive swimming and football. So how does this technology work? Well, I think you might get a better feel for this by describing how our video lesson transpired and how it helped myself and my two golf buddies one sunny day last month. Myself, Mike and Todd pulled up to our club one Friday morning a couple of weeks ago to prepare for our video session with our teaching pro Chris Borrego at our home course Greenhorn Creek, here in Angels Camp. I sort of knew what to expect, but my buddies had no idea what was in store for them. After a brief warm-up session on the driving range, we all piled into a golf cart and proceeded to the lesson tee on the other side of the range. I think that just being over here hitting balls would be inspiration enough, Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

www.sierragolfer.com

Page 11

but Chris had a little more in mind for us. Well actually a lot was in store for a former golf pro, a 7 and a 14 handicapper. After a little golfing chit-chat, Chris asked Mike to hit a few balls. I noticed Chris moving his camera and tripod into a position directly behind Mike as he began hitting a few balls. After hitting about a half-dozen shots, Chris grabbed his camera and walked over to his monitor and set it up for some viewing. Now I have given lessons with a camera before and also viewed my own swing many times, but the way in which Chris and this software illustrated Mike’s swing was brilliant. By slowing Mike’s swing down to capture some key points in his swing, Chris was able to illustrate where

that showing someone their swing in video and seeing the same swing with this tracking technology is like the difference between playing with hickory shafts and steel. It was that revealing. So Chris worked with Mike a bit and then asked Mike to hit a few more balls with a new move based on this revelation, and it didn’t take us long to realize that Chris hit on something profound in Mike’s swing within minutes. After a few more shots nice and high right to Mike’s target, we were all impressed…especially Mike. Then came Todd’s turn. Now Todd has a nice swing so I wouldn’t think the camera and software would show us much with his swing, but low and behold, something showed up right away, and it didn’t take Chris long to

told us to visit our locker room and see the results of our session on our own desktops at home. That’s right, with our own user name and password, we were able to watch the session we had outside, complete with Chris’s voiceover analysis after the session over the image of our swings. What a deal. So how are our 7 and 14 handicappers doing after their sessions? ‘Very encouraged’ is the consensus I get. How is my swing doing? Don’t know…been ranchin’ and writing. But I can’t wait to get back out there and work on it. I can certainly see the long-term value of such a system, as golfers can now see their swings anytime they are near a computer by just logging in. Couple this technology with the

Mike was and where he needed to be and Chris was spot on. Where the V1 software came in was in the telestrator feature of the system. Most of us remember how John Madden used to draw on the TV screen during key moments in pro football games, and this golf telestrator is very similar. Chris was able to point out where Mike’s hands, clubhead and club were at key moments of the swing. More importantly with Mike, the software was able to track Mike’s swing path and swing plane in a way that was startlingly revealing. I can say from experience Page 12

illustrate it very succinctly with this system. After a few swings, some camera time, a few more swings and Todd was onto something as well, with Chris’s help. My session was shorter and yet no less revealing, as the V1 software showed me that I had some setup issues causing me to flip the club through impact and manipulate my swingpath just enough to hit a poor shot once or twice too often in a round. It took me about 2 minutes to spot this with this technology. Priceless, I say. After our session was up, Chris www.sierragolfer.com

expertise of a knowledgeable teaching pro like Chris Borrego, and I don’t see how any golfer willing to devote some time wouldn’t be able to improve their swings and games in a relatively short period of time. And therein lies the real value of this new technology. The value for the dollar in this program is apparent right away. The value in saving time improving our swings, however, is priceless. Now You Can Take Your Golf Swing with You By Rick Rider Have you ever headed to the golf course with more than just a little trepidation about you upcoming game of golf? Did you wish you had your swing coach with on the practice tee? Guess what? Now you can. As I mentioned in my previous Technology column, there is some real cool technology out now that allows us to save time in becoming better golfers. Better yet, now we can take this technology with us and have it right there on the practice tee to help us prepare for our golf game. It’s called ‘Remote Learning’, and I have to say that this terminology sounds a bit like virtual learning, and also a bit 2010’ish for my taste…but that’s sort of what we are talking about here. Are you ready for this? So you have your iPhone and have apps like GPS or email, IM’ing and plenty others I wouldn’t know about because I am still using a dinosaur of a Motorola phone. Now take your golf swing with you. You heard me. Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

All you need to do is download onto your iPhone the V1 Golf App and you will not only see and hear your last lesson or swing tip from your V1 Swing pro, but you can also send your V1 swing coach a recent series of golf swings, and your V1 pro can, presumably for a fee, send your most recent swings back to you complete with any and all of his swing tips and corrections right back to your iPhone. Pretty cool, huh. So as a player, here is where I see the value here. First I need an iPhone. Then I download the app and keep my video lesson or latest swing thought very handy before my next golf game. It would be like having a virtual Butch Harmon or Nick Faldo right behind you while you warm up for your game. By the way, I think these guys can do this for you as well. So you have your latest lesson on your iPhone and you access it during warm-up, right? Ok, that’s a good start. Now you ask your buddy to capture a few swings before and maybe even during your round. Now, www.sierragolfer.com

send those swings off to your V1 pro and ask him or her to analyze you latest swings vs. your prior swings, and then to compare your during the round swings to your prior swings. Pretty neat. Now I’m not saying you should run right out and buy an iPhone. However, if I were serious about my game these days, I sure would. Better yet, get an iPad and see all this cool stuff on a larger screen. Plus you can read this magazine on an iPad as well. Hint, hint. After all there’s nothing like having a little virtual swing help when your swing gets away from you every now and again. The cost of the V1 Golf App is $9.99 and you can get more info on the App right here. Remember, once you get your V1 app, you need to find you a V1 pro. But even if you don’t have one of those pros handy, you can send your swing to a pro somewhere around the world. That’s the beauty of Remote Learning. Sounds like an Arthur C. Clarke novel, huh? Rick Rider is publisher of Sierra Golfer Digital Network, and can be reached at: rick@sierragolfer.com. Page 13

How to Maximize the Results of your... By: Ann Grassel, PT, Titleist Certified Golf Fitness Instructor.

Program Every day I read articles on Golf Fitness (I find them through Google Search). There are a lot of really good articles, but they pretty much say the same thing. You need to get stronger, engage your core muscles, be more flexible and have better balance in order to improve your golf swing. Some of these articles even have exercises on how to become more fit and flexible. What is missing is how to actually assess what your body needs to change, how to successfully make the changes and how to maintain the changes. Page 14

To assess what you need to change, you can find a golf fitness instructor to do your fitness evaluation (There is a list of Titleist certified Golf Fitness Instructors at www.mytpi.com). Many trainers or fitness professionals can teach you new exercises but very few really know how to look at your posture and alignment and help you change the way you sit, stand and walk. If your body is out of alignment when you begin an exercise and stretching program, what usually happens is that you will strengthen your dysfunctional pattern. The www.sierragolfer.com

muscles that are overworking will continue to overwork and the muscles that are under working or turned off (inhibited) will stay turned off. As a Sportsmedicine Physical Therapist, I always look first at the way my clients sit, stand and walk. I then show them how to easily and effectively engage their core muscles. This allows them to change their posture and minimize their dysfunctional patterns. My clients experience immediate change in their bodies and have new skills to be able to maintain the Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

changes in their everyday activities. When they begin their exercise and stretching programs, they will then strengthen this new posture and alignment making it even easier to maintain. It is very important to remember that when you make changes in your body, it is a gradual process. The body needs to have time to adapt to the changes. The most failures I see in fitness programs happens when people are shown how to engage core and have new aligned posture and then think they should be able to maintain it 24/7 from the start. When they can’t maintain it, they feel like they are lazy, have weak of abdominal muscles or that their posture is so bad that it can never change. So they give up doing anything at all. I tell my clients that in the beginning, they may only be able to maintain the new posture for 30 seconds and then they will find that they go back to the old posture to rest. This is okay, it is how the body learns. The next time they may be able to maintain the posture for 40 seconds, gradually increasing the time until the body gets stronger and has the endurance to sustain this new posture. It is equally important to know that there are many things that interfere with your body changing posture. If you know what they are then and how to work with them, you will be more successful in making the changes. 1. H ead Position—Most people lean back in their upper body when they sit and stand. As a result, the head then moves forward (otherwise, your would be looking up at the ceiling). (See photo 1). When the body moves into the new alignment, where their upper body is straight, Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

then the head is too far forward. The head wants to move back to its old position and the only way it can do that is to have the upper body move backwards again. I teach my clients to change their head position by first moving into the new alignment www.sierragolfer.com

and then breathe into the upper ribs in the front of their chest and then lengthen the front of the neck. This moves the head back into alignment over the trunk instead of ahead of it, allowing the body to maintain the new posture. Page 15

sits leaning back in their upper body, the soft tissue of the lower back is usually shortened. When you begin to move into a more upright, aligned position, the soft tissue of the low back will need to lengthen. This does not magically happen. As the low back soft tissue lengthens, there can be changes that also happens to the mid and upper back. Sometimes these changes can cause discomfort and pain as everything realigns. So again, you may only be able to maintain the new posture for 30 seconds at a time in the beginning, gradually increasing the time as the pain and discomfort subsides. You can use ice for the pain and add a good stretching program that targets the areas of discomfort. This will help you lengthen the soft tissue more quickly. Sometimes Body Work (massage or soft tissue release techniques) is needed to undo the structural holding patterns in your body.

You will be able to easily integrate what you learn in your exercise and stretching programs into your body and be successful in maintaining these changes, thereby maximizing the results of your golf fitness program.

A Gold Mine of Golf High country gems of the Sierra Nevada’s

In the mid-to-late 1800’s, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the Northern California foothills were a hot topic of conversation. The California Gold Rush was in full swing, and thousands of prospectors flocked to the region in search of fame and fortune. The region was filled with precious metals, plentiful acres of land, a fair share of rough, tough boom towns and what seemed to be endless opportunity. Contradictory to the rumors, life as a gold prospector was not as glamorous as many claimed. Hard work and difficult conditions left one in every five miners who came to California in 1849 dead within six months. Although the Gold Rush did die out eventually, it left behind a lasting legacy and room for many more treasures to come.

Many interesting characters and American icons also emerged from these times. Dubious outlaws like the infamous Black Bart claimed 28 successful robberies of area stage coaches. Surprisingly, Coyote Moon offered up a very playable, fair test of golf, and perhaps one of the finest mountain courses ever built, making it

Uncorking with the Wine Guy

By Brian Klassen

Wines for Summer Wine is catching up to beer and passing spirits as the beverage of choice for summer. The American wine drinker is more and more looking to a glass of wine to cool down after a hot day at the office or the yard. This is due to a couple of factors. Newer lighter wine styles such as Rose and new innovative packaging such as the tetra pak and wine in a can are making it easy to switch to wine. Wine also has the versatility to be matched with fresh summer cuisine and to be sipped on the

deck with friends. Some perfect summer styles are Rose from the south of France, Alabarino from Spain, Gruner Veltliner from Austria, Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, Riesling from the Finger Lakes region of New York, and un-wooded Chardonnay from California. While wine will never replace beer at the ball park, it will be seen more and more on the boat in the cooler and around the campsite.

In the world of destination golf, most of Nevada’s attention is inherently focused upon the glitzy courses of Las Vegas, and rightfully so with the collection of world-class golf courses, luxury accommodations and amenities Vegas has to offer. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a similar Vegas-style golf experience, with cooler temperatures, endless outdoor recreation, and spectacular views of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, definitely take a good look at Lake Tahoe. Just to be a bit more specific, since the lake is no puddle, the area located on the south shores and the town of Stateline, Nevada. EDGEWOOD GOLF CLUB # 16 - COURTESY EDGEWOOD

Percy Boomer was born in the south of England in 1874, the son of a Jersey schoolteacher who taught the likes of the golfing greats Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Harry Vardon once wrote of the senior Boomer, “In due course we all went to the village school but I fear, from all that I can remember, and from what I have been told that knowledge had little attraction for me in those days, and I know I often played truant sometimes three weeks at a stretch. Consequently my old school - master Mr. Boomer had no particular reason to be proud of me at that time, as he seems to have become since. He never enjoys a holiday so much in these days as when he comes over from Jersey to see me play for the Open Championship, as he does whenever the meeting is held at Sandwich. But when I did win the championship on that course he was so nervous and excited about my prospects that he felt himself unequal to watching me and during most of the time I was doing my four rounds he was sitting in a fretful state on the seashore.” The young Percy Boomer tried teaching school for a bit as his father had most of his life, but quit to become a professional golfer at the age of 22. Percy did win some championships, including the Swiss, Dutch and Belgium Opens, but was soon overshadowed on the golf course by his brother Aubrey. It didn’t take Percy long to figure out that he was much more comfortable as a golf instructor and was able to land a teaching position at the prestigious and exclusive golf club St Cloud, on Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

With this image foremost in a student’s mind, he can start making the proper turn, which will become memory to the body without having to remember many complex technical points.

Hence, the turning in a barrel concept. To me, golf is all about turning and Percy Boomer knew this and taught it well, and showed the golfer how to feel and create power by using this simple and effective turning action.

Playing Golf with Confidence!

People who play golf often speak about the two or three things missing from their games that if they had, they would perform closer to their potential. They talk about the need for better focus, about being more consistent and they talk about confidence. Let’s discuss confidence. Confidence in a sporting context is the belief that one possesses all the skill necessary to perform certain actions or to attain certain goals. Statements of confidence on the golf course sound like, “I know I can make this putt” and “I always split the fairway on this hole.” Almost every golfer will agree that having confidence contributes to playing well. But the way most people experience confidence is by what

Page 28

happens when it is absent. When standing over a shot, jittery nerves, memories of bad shots, and feelings of low self-esteem denote an absence of confidence. The presence of negative thoughts interferes with attention to our swings and as a result, our shots can go almost anywhere. Consider the possibility that it is not the confidence per se that allows our best golf to shine. It might be that the absence of fear and doubt allows us to focus our attention on the physical things

www.sierragolfer.com

necessary to let our bodies perform the way they were designed, so as to swing in a manner that will propel a golf ball where we want it to go. If our minds are focused on not looking bad in front of our playing partners, or remembering the last time we played this hole and plunked the ball in the water, then there is no possibility to be aware of the physical things that allow a good golf swing. Many experienced golfers say that

Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

golf is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. Contrary to that belief, I agree with golf coach Fred Shoemaker of the Extraordinary Golf School who postulates that golf is pretty close to 100 percent physical. Certainly there is a mental component when we are managing our game on the course. But the actual golf swing is physical, and golf games are better off when our bodies are more integrated with the outside world and our minds are quiet. It is the interference that we add with our minds that gets in the way of a very physical activity. Consider the beginner who hits their first twentyfoot putt into the center of the cup. Some people would call that beginner’s luck. But maybe, they just have not built up a conversation of how scary that putt is and they are merely doing what comes naturally. Where does that leave those of us who have minds that seemingly do not allow the game to be just physical? What can we do? Or maybe more to the point, how can we achieve a state of being that let’s us better relate to the game as a physical activity. Mental practice can be just as important as hitting hundreds of range balls or chipping and putting for hours. Confidence is an aspect of the mental game that is a must for good and consistent playing. And confidence can be practice and learned both on the course and off. Confidence comes from doing things well and knowing that you are capable. Commit to working on an area of your game that needs attention and you will become more confident. Alternatively, act as if you are already a great ball striker, putter, or fearless superhero with a golf club; whatever you think is missing from your game. Pretend Sierra Golfer - June Edition 2010

that your favorite tour pro stepped into your body for a shot or a round. Notice your posture as you walk between shots. Walk with your shoulders back and your head upright and see what there is to see with your eyes. Smile. Become better attuned to what your mind is saying. Acknowledge that it is just your mind playing a recording. This awareness can give you an opportunity to just allow it to be without judgment. Then, refocus on the target and envision the swing that will propel your ball there. Learn to appreciate the present moment, what is happening outside of you and outside of your head. When our confidence is thwarted, we are very internal, or in our heads. Practice becoming more in tune with the external world. Feel the breeze, see the hole you are playing, notice the trees, then swing with peace and with confidence.
